Rogers’ Rangers reenactment at Point au Fer By Sarah L. Cronk

Robert Rogers, organizer of Rogers’ Rangers — colonial militia who fought for the British during the French and Indian War — worked to fight off the French during a battle at Point au Fer in June 1760. Organizers are working to create a reenactment weekend this June in honor of the 250th anniversary of the battle.

sarah@denpubs.com POINT AU FER — More than 150 reenactors will be heading to the Northern Tier this summer to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Point au Fer — the first reenactment ever held in the area. During the rededication ceremony held at Point au Fer last May, in which unnamed soldiers were given recognition for the battle fought at the site during the Revolutionary War, it came to light a milestone anniversary was fast approaching. John Zurlo, a committee member of the reenactment, to be held June 5-6, explained Calvin Castine, owner of Hometown Cable, had been studying up on Point au Fer and realized June 5-6 was the 250th anniversary of Rogers’ Rangers — colonial militia who fought for the British — confrontation on Point au Fer. Robert Rogers, a colonial farmer recruited by the British during the French and Indian War, was the organizer of Rogers’ Rangers. “He was a phenomenal man,” Zurlo explained of Rogers. “[He became] acclimated to backwoods and he actually is considered the originator of the Green Beret.”

Joe Heath, another committee member of the reenactment, added the Green Berets practiced guerrilla warfare. “All of a sudden his opponents didn’t have a head,” Zurlo explained. “It was like Rambo ... They were tough, they could walk through swamps. They could walk 12, 15 miles a day.” The significance of the battle in 1760 was Rogers, along with his Rangers, went up against a large body of French forces. After a three-hour battle in which Rogers defended his position, the French were forced to scatter into the swamp, opening a passage for the invasion and capture of Montreal in September of that year. During the reenactment, which will be held at 1 p.m. each day, other events will be offered such as demonstrations and activities depicting life of the 18th century. “It’s history and education about our area people should be aware of,” Heath said. “I just think it’s going to be a great thing for families that weekend.” Editor’s Note: The committee putting together the reenactment are still planning some of the specifics of the weekend. Stay tuned to the North Countryman for periodic updates.

NAC improvement project goes through By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.comv ELLENBURG DEPOT — The second time’s a charm. After the EXCEL Capital Improvement Project was voted against in December, Northern Adirondack Central School revised their $35.9 million project plan, whittling it down to $7.9 million, at no impact to taxpayers. The plan, known as Proposition 1 on the ballot, passed by a “landslide” according to superintendent Laura J. Marlow, with a vote of 707 to 230. The second part of the project, known as Proposition 2, was at a small tax increase to taxpayers, and also passed with a vote of 482 to 421. “That was close,” said Marlow of Proposition 2. Overall, she said the atmosphere around the district is “full of promise.” “Perseverance really paid off,” Marlow said. “Working together with the community as a team, really taking a look at that first project and fine tuning it really paid off.” “I truly believe that this is a vote of confidence that this district really needed to say that we’re going to invest in ... the education of our children,” she added. “Now we can really move towards the 21st See CAPITAL PROJECT, page 7

Spring carnival to bring people out of hibernation By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com MOOERS — The county fair may still be months away, but the Mooers Elementary Parent Teacher Partnership is all set to bring out the carnival games. This Saturday, March 27, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m, the PTP will have their second annual Spring Carnival at Mooers Elementary School, 16 School St. “It went really well,” said PTP president Brandi Lloyd of last year ’s event. “We were surprised, the turnout was really good, so we’re hoping for that again this year.” “We try to have it right around the first or second Saturday of spring, just to kind of get out of the winter doldrums,” she added. “Out of hibernation. Get out of your house and do some fun things.” Numerous kid-friendly games were held throughout the school last year, and Lloyd said this year new ones have been added “just to keep it fresh.” One of the new games is Plinko, based on the popular game on Price is Right. “One of the parents made a Plinko board,” Lloyd explained. A little girl participates in a coin toss game during last year’s first Mooers Elementary Spring “It’s a homemade version. It has lit- Carnival. All games require tickets, which can be purchased at the

carnival for $.25 a piece, or 5 for $1, with the money going towards PTP. “It goes to different events that we do,” Lloyd said. “It helps pay for refreshments and stuff for open house and for the Family Fall Festival.” Lloyd said the money also helped pay for a theatre troupe that visited the school earlier in the year as well as items for teachers. Looking to the future, Lloyd is hoping the money can be used in a big way. “I think eventually, if ... we get a big enough response, it’s about time that the playground get some updates,” she said. “That’d be great if we could do that.” Lloyd however, recognizes money may be tight for some families right now, who may not have the extra expense to come to the carnival. “With the economy ... we thought about it and thought maybe we shouldn’t be doing so many “fundraisers,” she explained. “But this one you can budget for your family. Come with $20, come with $50, come with $10 ... You can cater it to what kind of money you have for entertaining.” “It’s a fun day for your family,” Lloyd added. “It can cost as much or as little as you want it to.” Someone Cares!

tudents often ask how I got into technology. I tell them my start came when I joined the Navy out of high school and, after testing, the Navy decided I should become an avionics technician fixing aircraft for a living. So, I raised my hand, went to boot camp, and started what would become an awesome 20-year adventure. A year of schooling came after boot camp and then I started my first assignment at the Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department in Brunswick, Maine. Three years of electronics bench work proved to be way too boring for me, which coupled with the interest caused by constant aircraft activity outside our hangar, I was driven to reenlist in return for aircrew duty. That was where I really started to learn computer technologies. The year was 1978. After more schooling I spent three years with Patrol Squadron Eight as an in-flight technician on the B version of Lockheed’s P-3 Orion aircraft working on communications, navigation and varied reconnaissance equipment. After a tour there and more schooling, I went to Patrol Squadron

Twenty-Four, who was flying the newer P-3C version of the Orion. The P-3C had a centralized digital data suite with a massive computer and multiple logic units that interfaced most of the avionics. I had to load the preflight diagnostic software and run tests on all the systems followed by the mission operating program. After Twenty-Four, I went to Forty-Five and with even more schooling, learned another avionic platform. My career ended in 1994 after an instructor tour in Jacksonville, Fla. I describe to the kids how being an instructor caused my interest in education. Then, I point out how By Ron Poland schooling in technology was never-ending and how they can expect similar experiences during their awesome adventures.

ecent world events should serve as a reminder to caregivers it is vitally important to be prepared in the event of a natural disaster, according to Right at Home’s Web site. Those of us who experienced the ice storm of a few years back saw how having a plan in place made an enormous difference. Caregivers need to ask these questions: • What type of emergency could happen here? • What is my community’s disaster plan? • How will we be evacuated from the home? • Where is the nearest shelter? • Will our neighbors be able to check on us? • How do I shut off the power/gas to the home? After gathering the information needed to answer the above questions, caregivers need to prepare for an emergency event. A support network should be established, combining neighbors, relatives and emergency personnel. Shelter options should also be considered. If necessary, make transportation arrangements with emergency agencies so everyone can safely arrive at emergency shelters. Caregivers should also be sure to have the following on hand: • One gallon of water per person per day • Non-perishable foods and a manual can opener

• First aid and hygiene supplies, including toilet paper and incontinence supplies • Flashlights, radios and extra batteries, as well as a cell phone and extra battery • Candles and matches • A minimum two-week supply of medicines • Cash, credit cards, and traveler ’s checks • Easily accessible phone numbers of relatives and emergency contacts • Pet supplies, including food and medication, if necessary It is also recommended important documents such as birth certificates, insurance policies and the like be stored in a waterproof container that can be easily carried in the event of an evacuation. Is it selfish to stock up on those sale items?

I

received lots of feedback from readers concerned about advice I passed on: to maximize savings by purchasing as many sale items as possible with your coupons. Here’s one letter: “In reading your column, I’m concerned that you may be encouraging people to take more than their share. Countless times I’ve gone to buy a product with a coupon and had to get a rain check. Meanwhile, I have witnessed people buying cases upon cases of the same product. I know people may feel they are just out for themselves and their families, but how greedy can you get?” It’s true that when we buy on a price-based basis versus a needs-based basis, the items that are on the best sales at the store deplete quickly. So what’s a shopper to do? This reader is definitely on the right track by getting a rain check. While it may be a minor inconvenience to have to get a rain check when the store is out of a particular sale item, it can also work to our advantage as shoppers. Most rain checks are good for 30 days. That’s a nice, long time to check back at the store, at your convenience, and pick up sale items when they’re back in stock. You can even use rain checks to “extend the sale” for yourself! During a great sale on dog food, our store was having trouble keeping bags in stock. I bought the last three bags that were on the shelf — and of course, I used my coupons on them. Then, I asked for a rain check for six more bags. Over the next few days, I got in touch with friends and family who also save their coupons, but don’t own dogs. I asked them if I could have their dog food coupons. A week later, I went back to the store and picked up more with the coupons I’d just acquired. The shelves were full again and I was still able to enjoy the sale price because of the rain check. With regard to this reader ’s comment that he’s seen people buying up every single item in stock during a sale, I do sympathize. I’ve never been a “shelf-clearer,” nor do I advocate being one. I’m certainly aware at times, if something’s

a fantastic deal, it’s tempting to buy every one of them in sight! And I know there are two schools of thought when it comes to great sales. Either you feel you’re “first come, first served” and are entitled to buy whatever you want, or you will buy in moderation and leave some behind for others. I’ve found a third option works well, too: special orders. Most major grocery stores (drugstores too) order and receive stock every single day. If there’s something I want to buy in a larger quantity that might affect how many of a certain item is on the shelves for everyone else, I’ll go to the store’s servBy Jill Cataldo ice counter and order it. This has two benefits. I’m not clearing the shelf of a product and potentially leaving others frustrated. And I also know the next day, I will get a phone call letting me know my items are in. I can go to the counter, pick up exactly what I need and I won’t have to make extra, unnecessary trips to the store to see if my products may finally be back in stock. Remember, stores want our business. It’s usually not a problem at all to special-order products. Most stores are very happy to accommodate their customers. During a recent sale on bottled water at a local grocery store, so many people in our town were special-ordering water, the service counter at the store had pyramids of water cases sitting behind it, each with a note stuck to the top with the name of the customer who had ordered it! This is a win-win for the store and the customer. The store knows it has a guaranteed sale to the customer who has ordered the product and the customer is happy too, knowing they will take home exactly the quantity and products that they’d like. Don’t be afraid to try!

North Countryman to get new readers Since the early ‘80s, the Clinton County Free Trader Today, a weekly publication of Denton Publications, has been mailed to homes in Dannemora, Saranac, Cadyville, Morrisonville, Peru and Schuyler Falls. However, come April 3, those residents will be receiving the historic North Countryman in its place. The decision to combine the two papers, under the North Countryman name came as a way for the papers to operate more efficiently, and at a benefit to our advertisers — who will be able to reach more than 16,000 homes with the direct-mail publication, instead of having to advertise in two separate papers. The North Countryman was chosen as the new paper ’s name simply because of its long-standing history in the Northern Tier. Since its beginning in March 1928, the newspaper has been the weekly paper the communities identified with. Now, it is our hope our neighbors will come to love the publication as much as our current readers. I believe the combining of the papers will be a smooth transition, and one that will benefit all the readers. As a resident of Cadyville, I receive the Clinton County Free Trader Today, yet I’m often interested in

various events happening in communities such as Champlain or Chazy, and not just because that’s the territory I write for, but because I have found those towns truly take pride in what they do. Clinton County may be spread out over a wide distance, but many of the same stories important to people in Saranac or Peru may be just as important to those in the north. Although the joint publication will be under the name North Countryman, there will still be some very noticeable changes. The new paper will be a more userfriendly and readable format, measuring roughly 10 inches tall by 11 inches wide. This new look will not only be eye-catching, but eco-friendly as well — saving 30 percent in paper. We’re also working hard to come up with new ways to make the publication stand out when you receive it in the mail or pick it up in one of your favorite hometown businesses. The new publication is something we here at Denton Publications are extremely excited about, and we hope you will be as well.

Importance of overall conditioning for golfers

G

olf injuries are common. Protect yourself by understanding the importance of overall conditioning. After a long winter off from golfing, like any sport, you need to prepare your body to get back into the swing of things. The following tips can help you stay in shape on and off the course. · Warm up — Before you practice your golf swing or play a round of golf, warm up with a brisk walk or a set of jumping jacks. Stretch your hands, wrists, forearms, elbows, shoulders, spine and pelvis. Swing your golf club a few times, gradually increasing your range of motion. · Start slowly — You might practice your swing for hours, believing it’s helping your game. But if your body isn’t conditioned for the strain, practicing your golf swing may do more harm than good. Work up to your desired level of activity instead. · Strengthen your muscles — You don’t need bulging muscles to hit a long drive — but the stronger your muscles, the greater your club speed. Stronger muscles are less prone to golf injuries. For best results, do strength training exercises including core exercises year-round. · Focus on flexibility — Regular stretching can improve your range of motion and lead to a more fluid

golf swing. Yoga is a great option for golfers. · Develop endurance — Regular aerobic activity can give you staying power on the course. Try walking, jogging, bicycling or swimming. · Lift your clubs carefully — If you jerk heavy clubs out of the trunk, you could injure yourself before you reach the first tee. Keep your back straight and use the strength of your legs to lift heavy objects. Also, remember your sunscreen and a hat to protect your skin from the suns harmful rays, and make sure to drink plenty of water before and during your game. If you are interested in private personal training for golf specific sport including flexibility, core, balance, strength, endurance, and injury prevention you may contact me for a free consultation at 605-3549. Week 10—By Martha Breyette (Editors Note: Martha Breyette of Saranac is on a 14-week goal to get in shape to compete in the inaugural City of Plattsburgh Half Marathon, Sunday, April 18. Breyette will share her trials and tribulations in this newspaper through a weekly journal entry.)

S

o I did the 9 miles! I ran over the weekend when the weather was nice. The run was okay, although I knew towards the end I was tiring, especially with the hills I was running up and down. They are pretty hard to avoid living in Saranac. Oh well, it will make me stronger in the end. I had a rough week this week. It started out good but then I had an asthma attack/Vocal Cord Dysfunction episode at work and ended up in the hospital for a night. I recovered very quickly and seem stronger now than a year ago. This happened on Tuesday and I was back to work on Thursday. I will be able to return to exercise tomorrow so we will see how that goes. I feel fine, just a little tired. It just goes to show that can get healthier and stronger over time. This regimen of diet and exercise has improved my lifestyle and it will only continue to improve. I will maintain my exercise routine and hope to lose a few more pounds especially before my big birthday in a couple of weeks! My family and friends remain so encouraging and supportive — it is really exciting to see their support for me. I feel blessed to be healthy and happy and have the friends and family that I have. For all of those who are starting on this lifestyle change, keep going and you will see results — it takes time but you will get there!

New training studio is open, available to all By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — When the extra space became available, Corinna Maggy, a certified personal trainer, took the opportunity to begin a training studio in downtown Plattsburgh. Maggy explained her husband, Paul, had been working to open a bike shop, and finally found the perfect space at 30 City Hall Place. “When we found this location, we just happened to have extra space,” Maggy explained. “So, I decided to move [my] gym [equipment] I had set up at home, down here.” However, the new personal training studio, “Mountain Riders,” is far from your typical gym. “It’s private, one-on-one personal training,” Maggy said. “No in-

timidation. No membership fees. Free initial consultation and affordable rates. Because I want this to be available to everybody.” Maggy’s main objective is to promote health and fitness, and a general healthy lifestyle. “I’m going to do yoga classes during the summer, outdoors,” she explained. “Boot camp, outdoors. I’m going to do a Women On Weights personal program, which is going to be more individualized for their particular needs.” The Women On Weights program, which Maggy has done in the past, focuses on flexibility, strength and balance. “I’ve had people write to me after they finish their first session,” she said. “They have improved their range of motion, they weren’t experiencing lower back pain anymore. They just felt great. They

love the program.” The program, which will begin Wednesday, April 21, will actually take place at the Plattsburgh Recreation Department, 52 U.S. Oval, instead of at Mountain Riders. As for the training studio, Maggy is hoping to utilize the area where they are located, as it is right

on the Saranac River. “I really want to incorporate lifestyle into the exercise program, if it’s appropriate for my clients,” she said. “A lot of times I will take the workout outside and just bring our environment into the workout.” When training is done indoors,

Maggy has plenty of equipment for her clients to utilize, including cattle bells, medicine balls, free weights, a treadmill, spin bike, and a universal gym. For more information, or to sign up to work with Maggy, call 3249900 or 605-3549.

Children encouraged to enter poster, essay contests that paint pictures of local history By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The annual Battle of Plattsburgh Poster Contest and Battle of Plattsburgh Essay Contest have returned with chances for students to research and tell the story of the War of 1812 battle through their art and the written word. Poster contest coordinator Jane Claffey said entries for the poster contest — which is open only to fourth-grade students — “keep getting better all the time.” “It’s unbelievable to see [the students’] creativity,” she said. “They really work hard at it.” The student whose artwork is chosen as the winning submission will have his or her design featured on general admission buttons for the annual Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration Weekend this fall. In addition, the winner will have the opportunity to ride in the annual parade that weekend, if they so choose. “And, they always so choose,” laughed Claffey. The first place winner also receives a $100 savings bond donated by TD Bank. Second receives a $75 bond and third receives a $50 bond. The top three posters will also be framed and put on display at the Battle of Plattsburgh Museum. The essay contest, which is open to students in grades 4-12, involves students writing about the pivotal 19th

century battle. Battle of Plattsburgh Museum manager Kristina Parker-Wingler, who oversees the essay contest, said she looks forward to reading the essays each year. “It’s really fun to read them and it’s neat to see the kids get really excited about this,” said Parker-Wingler. “It’s one way we can actively bring history out of the textbooks.” Entries for the essay contest must be submitted by Friday, April 9, with winners to be notified by Friday, April 30. In each grade level — 4-5, 6-8, and 9-12 — first place will receive $200, second will receive $100 and third will take home $50, all courtesy of Key Bank. An award reception will also be held Saturday, May 8. Entries for the poster contest may be in any medium but must be in color and no larger than 12 inches by 18 inches. The poster must be scannable to create the button image. The deadline for poster entries is April 30. Submissions should be returned to the North Country Teacher Resource Center, located in Room 320 of SUNY Plattsburgh’s Sibley Hall, 101 Broad St. Only one entry is allowed per student. For additional guidelines for the poster contest, contact Claffey at 561-4296. More information about the essay contest may be obtained from Parker-Wingler at 566-1814.

Capital Project From page 1 century learning environment and bring in the technology that is so needed.” Marlow explained the next phase of the project is the design phase, which will involve hiring a construction manager to oversee the plans. “Now it’s working with focus groups to be able to actually design what needs to be done,” she said. The plan is to work with faculty, staff and students to see what they want for the school. For example, Marlow is hoping to look to the students for the redesign of the cafeteria. “A lot of cafeterias are going to more of a café/booth type of seating,” she explained. “I think by doing that people take ownership. They become excited about the project and then when we finally get to the phase of the actual construction, people say, ‘I had some say in that. I gave my two cents, and they listened.’” Although she can’t say for sure, Marlow is hoping construction will begin summer 2011. “This is a very exciting time for Northern Adirondack Central School district,” she said. “You’re talking 40 years of [needed] upgrades. So it’s just a blessing for this district.”

Bodybuilding competition Saturday By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com BEEKMANTOWN — Ron Parmeter has been competing as a professional bodybuilder for seven years, and it’s been one of his goals to host his own show. Now, that dream has come true. Parmeter and friend Dave LaClair of Peru have teamed up to promote “OCB: The Uprising,” a bodybuilding competition sanctioned by the Organization of Competitive Bodybuilders this Saturday, March 27, at Beekmantown Central School. “I got a hold of the president of the organization and he granted us the privilege to promote a show with them,” said Parmeter.

OTIS FEEDS AND TACK STALL MAT SPECIAL

When looking for a place to host the event, Parmeter said he reached out to friend Ed Cook, director of athletics for the Beekmantown Central School District. “It’s very difficult to get a venue, and they were very supportive,” Parmeter said of the school district administration. After receiving approval, Parmeter said it only made sense to decide profits from the event would go to the Beekmantown Central School Booster Club, which helps the school district with athleticrelated expenses. “We had no intentions of making money on [the event], it was just something we wanted to bring to the area,” he said. “And, since the boost-

er club benefits athletes, it was a no brainer [to donate profits to the club].” With the negative stereotype of steroid use often being associated with bodybuilding, Parmeter said he also wanted to bring the event to the North Country to show kids, especially, that isn’t always the case. “This is a polygraphed event,” said Parmeter, explaining those who enter the competition are subject to a stringent lie detector test regarding the use of performance enhancers. “This will give younger adolescents a chance to see what can be done naturally.” The event will begin with pre-judging for competitors at 11:30 a.m. Those competing

must check in the night before, Friday, March 26, from 79 p.m., at the Days Inn on Everleth Drive in Plattsburgh or from 8-10 a.m. the day of the event at the school. A mandatory competitor meeting will be held that day at 10:30 a.m. The night show, which Parmeter said would be the show of interest to the general public, will begin at 5:30 p.m. Awards will be presented at the conclusion of the event. For more information, contact Parmeter at 593-0473 or visit the event Web site www.ocbtheuprising.com.
