Helping hands join for cause with paws

CHAZY — On Saturday, May 1, Woodmen of the World Lodge 462 will join hands to help paws.

Every year, Lodge 462 takes part in Joining Hands Day, which according to the Web site www.joinhandsday.org, is to get fraternal and non-fraternal organizations “to make a difference in their communities through helpful projects that connect youths and adults.”

This year, the lodge chose to take on Woodmen of the World’s Animal House Program, which provides information on how to build a dog house, during the event Hands & Paws.

An artistic perspective: Local man finds creative way to overcome physical limitations

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com SARANAC — When Jack Stone was left paralyzed from the neck down following a stock car racing accident nearly 27 years ago, it was a challenge he was determined to overcome. One way was through the world of art.

It was in 1989 when his nurse’s aide suggested he start painting, using his mouth to control his paintbrush. Reluctant at first, Stone gave it a try and soon found he enjoyed it.

“I put my brain to work,” he said.

“And, I’m getting so I really love it now. I’ve come a long way.”

The average painting takes Stone anywhere from a few hours to as many as 40 hours, depending on its complexity, he said. His specialty is painting landscapes, though Stone said he recently began trying portraits — particularly his own.

“I figured I’d do one of myself because I know what I look like,” Stone said, laughing.

However, Stone said he found it

wasn’t as easy as he originally thought. It’s taken him about five months to get a basic rendering of himself, with drawing features like the mouth, chin and nose being his major challenges.

“I’ve had more nose jobs in that thing than Joan Rivers,” he said.

“I’ve got about a half-inch of paint in that area. It’s going to look 3-D when I get done with it.”

It’s Stone’s sense of humor that’s gotten him through the major adjustment to his life. It’s also gotten him through many other challenges he’s had to face along the way, including losing his wife when she was only 37 years old, losing two children and having his home and his business, Stone’s Smoke House and Meat Market, devastated by fire years ago.

“I still find a way to smile,” said Stone.

That’s because, through it all, Stone has learned to not take anything for granted and live each day to its fullest.

“Every day is precious. That’s

why they named it ‘the present.’ It’s a gift,” he said. “If you don’t look at it that way, you ain’t got a grasp on what life’s all about.”

Stone credits his positive outlook on life and his abilities to support he’s received from family and friends, and also from the Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists. Since 1996, Stone has been a member of the Atlanta-based organization, which works with people who have lost use of their hands and now paint with their mouths and feet.

“They’ve been in business over 50 years and have artists in 80 countries,” explained Stone, who considers himself an ambassador for the association.

Stone is one of only 60 artists the organization knows of in the United States who paints the way he does.

Though, that’s something he’d like to see change for those facing situations similar to his, he said.

portant he knows he can do something like become an artist and make a living and support a family,” said Stone, adding organizations like AMFPA are there to offer encouragement.

If nothing else, Stone said he wants others to know that losing the use of your hands or feet isn’t the

end of the world.

“I always say, I can’t climb a mountain, but I can sure paint one,” he said.

A closer look at SkyDrive

I

nternet services like cloud computing, cloud storage and file synchronization (via the cloud) are increasingly available, which is causing some businesses and individuals to take a serious look.

I have used Microsoft’s cloud storage service, called SkyDrive, since it first started. Part of the Windows Live suite, SkyDrive offers a very generous 25GB of completely free on-line storage. Users of the service may create folders and upload files with options to keep things completely private or share with other select users. So what’s the downside?

SkyDrive functions via a Web interface; functionality of the interface is the biggest problem. To say it is “inconvenient” is an understatement. Creating folders is easy enough, but uploading multiple files is a tedious process with very limited capability. I sometimes wonder if anyone at Microsoft uses the service and realizes the interface stinks.

The folks at Cloud Storage Explorer must have wondered the same thing and saw it as a business opportunity. They developed an application called SDExplorer that brings drag-and-drop functionality to SkyDrive.

They offer a free version with decent features as well as a paid “Pro” version with additional features.

Two things are needed to get started, a SkyDrive account and the SDExplorer application.

Visit skydrive.live.com and create a new account (or log in to your existing account). Then create a couple of folders and upload two or three files just to have something there.

I can happily say everything works exactly as stated and the new capability is very welcome. Files are more easily accessed and managed making the SkyDrive service that much better.

ccording to the spring 2010 edition of Action for Older Persons Mature Messenger, May is Older Americans Month — a tradition dating back to 1963 to honor the legacies and ongoing contributions of older Americans and support them as they enter the next stage in life.

lackie is a large, male black lab who was intentionally abandoned by his owners. However, he’s fun-loving and a joy to be around. He is neutered, up-to-date on all vaccines, and heartworm negative.

Mike is a small, senior beagle who spent 12 years of his life on a chain. As a result, he has a permanent collar ring around his neck. Since entering the shelter, he’s been able to run and play with other dogs. He is neutered and up-to-date on all vaccines.

Pea-planting season here Basket prices up for month

W

ith the warm spring weather we have been enjoying, many vegetable gardeners are eager to get their gardens planted. The temperatures have been so warm it is tempting to plant vegetables that require warm weather to thrive, but we shouldn’t forget here in the North Country, we will most likely experience several more frosty nights!

That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be out working in our veggie patches. Now is the time to plant one of my husband’s favorite vegetables — the pea. The pea, or Pisum sativum, is thought to have originated in Middle Asia and the central plateau of Ethiopia. By the Bronze Age (c.

3,000 B.C.) they were used by the inhabitants of Central Europe, were used by the Greeks and Romans, and were even mentioned in England after the Norman conquest. It is now a popular vegetable all over the world.

This legume can be planted as soon as the soil temperature reaches 50 degrees F and the plants grow best at temperatures of 55 to 64 degrees F. This plant does not thrive in the heat of the summer. But it can be replanted for a fall crop. Peas grow best in slightly acidic, well-drained soils.

There are many different varieties of the

garden pea. With shell peas, the seeds are allowed to fully ripen, removed from the pod, and eaten. Snow peas and snap peas are eaten whole when the pod has reached maturity but prior to the seeds reaching maturity.

Vining cultivars can climb almost 6 feet high by curling their tendrils around any available support. Metal fences, twine, or netting supported by a frame can be used for a pea trellis. Traditionally a structure known as a pea brush was used, which is simply pruned tree branches thrust upright into the soil. There are several newer varieties that are low-growing and do not require a trellis.

I have many found childhood memories shelling and eating these sweet, nutritious veggies with my grandparents who grew a prolific amount of peas each spring. Now my husband and I share the joy trying to guess the number of peas each shell will contain as we shuck fresh garden peas with our children on our back patio.

he cost of the 41 items in the market basket for March came to $93.01, up slightly from $91.70 in February, and also from $92.12 last March. For the month there was a small rise in all categories, with the only significant rise being 7 percent on produce prices; prices fell 3 percent on frozen foods. Prices remained stable from March 2009 with the exception of a 5 percent rise on meats and an 8 percent drop on miscellaneous items.

Frozen foods posted the biggest decreases for the month on haddock fillets and chopped spinach. French cut green beans are up 15 percent for the year and chopped spinach is down 12 percent for the same time period.

In the produce department the cost of Iceberg lettuce was down significantly to $1.66 from $1.84 in February. Yellow onions were up 28 percent and Dole bananas 16 percent.

For the year the prices of carrots and yellow onions were up over 30 percent.

ny time a store offers an instant-savings deal I get excited. Sales that offer instant savings of a specified dollar amount when shoppers buy certain items are great opportunities for us to stock up at sale prices and to actually get the store to “pay us” to shop.

Recently, my store had a “Buy 10, Save $3” sale. The store’s weekly advertisement showed a group of assorted products. Buying any products on the page in combinations of 10 would yield an instant savings of $3 at the bottom of my receipt. This particular ad was divided into sections: one section with items priced at $1, the next group with items priced at $2.50 and so on.

When I see a sale like this, I immediately start crunching numbers. In this type of sale the least expensive items tend to be the best deal. For example, if I buy 10 items from the dollar group of products, I’ll reach $10 in cost — but I’ll receive instant savings of $3 for buying 10 items. So, I’ll ultimately pay $7 for my 10 items — 70 cents each.

So far so good. But what happens if I use coupons on these items? Things start to get fun! Remember coupons will apply to prices of items before the instant savings is applied at the register, so shoppers can often enjoy coupon overage during these sales. Overage refers to the phenomenon of receiving more coupon value for an item than it cost in the first place. And, as a coupon shopper, I love working overage into my shopping trips to bring my entire grocery bill down.

To make the most of the instant savings promotion, I focus on the items for which I know I have coupons. During this sale, a few of the items in the dollar group caught my eye: boxed rice mixes, packages of latex gloves, bottled teas and sandwich bags, all priced at $1. I had the following coupons: two 75-cent coupons for rice mixes, three $1 coupons for latex gloves, one Buy One, Get One Free bottled tea coupon, and three 50-cent coupons for sandwich bags.

Now, if I purchased these 10 items at $1 each, I’d qualify for the $3 in instant savings promotion. But of course, we want to use our coupons, too.

Here’s what my shopping trip looks like so far: 2 boxed rice mixes ($2 cost) - two 75-cent coupons = 50 cents

3 packages of gloves ($3 cost) - three $1 coupons = free 2 bottled teas ($2 cost) - BOGO coupon = $1 3 packages of sandwich bags ($3 cost) - three 50-cent coupons = $1.50 After applying all my coupons, my register total comes to just $3 — but that’s not what I pay. Remember, buying these 10 items during this sale qualifies me for $3 in instant savings. And when that instant savings is automatically applied at the register, how much did I really pay for these items?

Zero. That’s right, I paid nothing (but sales tax) for these 10 items.

How did this happen? I received overage from the coupons I used for several of these items, which in turn was applied to the price of the other items in the list. So let’s break it down.

The rice mixes, priced at $1, actually cost 70 cents each

The 75-cent coupon I used on this item scanned automatically, applied to the $1 price of the rice before the instant savings. But since the end cost of my rice was just 70 cents a box, the extra 5 cents per coupon was applied to the other items I bought in the same trip.

The same thing happened with the latex gloves and one bottle of the tea.

They were priced at a dollar but my coupons made them totally free; and since the actual price of each package was reduced to just 70 cents for the instant savings sale, I gained 30 cents in overage for each of the coupon I used. (I didn’t even want the gloves! But I often work things like this into these kinds of deals in order to help bring the price down on the other items I do want. My unwanted items go to friends, family and the local food pantry.)

Take a close look at the next instant savings sale at your local store. I’ll bet you’ll never look at them quite the same way again.

trend of up and down costs on particular cuts. The category was up 5 percent over this time last year.

The only significant change in the canned goods aisle was on Starkist tuna fish, which continues to drop in price, down another 8 percent from last month and also down for the year.

The total of the items surveyed in the dairy case is up 1 percent for both the month and year. The prices on large eggs and skim and whole milk are up sharply from March 2009.

The cost of vegetable oil in the miscellaneous category went up slightly at 2 percent for the month, but remains down 22 percent for the year.

Seasonal reminder Oranges and grapefruit are still at their peak, but tangerines are moving out of season. Fresh pineapple and strawberry supplies will be plentiful through summer. California long white and new red potatoes are coming into season.

The Market Basket Report is a bi-monthly survey of 41 food items commonly purchased by consumers. Four major supermarkets are surveyed in the Plattsburgh area. Grocery data is compiled and reported by the Technical Assistance Center at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh.

A voice rises from the wilderness: Keep the towers!

I n the early 1970s, a group of lawyers, legislators and environmentalists gathered in Albany. They came to define an array of aesthetic ideals to determine how to best ‘protect the park’ in the future.

For a template, they used standards, terminology and language adapted from the Wilderness Act, which President Lyndon B. Johnson had signed on Sept. 3, 1964, to create the National Wilderness Preservation System.

Unfortunately for residents of the region, the cartel was composed of a group primarily of enthusiastic protectionists and energetic armchair outdoorsmen, whose boots had rarely mucked the mud of an Adirondack trail.

Utilizing standards that had been developed for the federal legislation, the group devised a plan that exhibited little concern for the people that lived within the borders of the Blueline and professed even less regard for their traditions.

Soon after, the brain trust decided to modernize the venerable, old Conservation Department by renaming it the Department of Environmental Conservation. In short order, the agency became known locally as the ‘Department of Eternal Consternation,’ but the folks in Albany didn’t seem to mind because “the times they were a’ changing.”

Nearly 40 years later, common sense finally collided with common ground in Ray Brook when environmental activists and local

yokels, commissioners and common folk, lawyers and laymen finally stepped back and took notice of the nearly 4o years of blunders.

Fortunately, they all came together at a meeting of the Adirondack Park Agency and resolved that the long string of blunders should not be allowed to continue.

Park Agency Commissioners listened intently to the public’s opinion and eventually came to the conclusion that two, historic fire towers, survivors of a vast network of sentinels that once stood guard over the land, should remain looming over the vast forests that they had once protected.

For over a century, the Adirondacks have managed to maintain the gentle balance of a vast wilderness that encompasses great woods and good people within its soaring peaks, raging rivers and solitary communities.

Fortunately, the region seems to be locked in a time warp where the authentic, small town, American culture still exists and it mixes easily with actual wild lands, where unfettered travel through remote woods and waters is still possible, for miles on end. Even though USA Today lists the region as one of the “Ten Great Places on Earth,” fewer than 135,000

people are smart enough, and just plain stubborn enough, to call it home.

The iconic towers, which sit atop St. Regis and Hurricane Mountains, have not been officially utilized for decades. Despite their official abandonment, the towers continue to serve as a destination for generations of hikers and as a familiar landmark for residents.

Once considered nothing more than rusting remnants of their proud past, the towers will now represent a new hope for the future, where traditions are respected and residents have a seat at the table. The towers will stand tall to provide a visible and symbolic reminder that local voices can still be heard, howling from the wilderness.

In March 2005, the St. Regis Mountain Fire Tower was listed on the National Historic Lookout Register and in June 2007, the Hurricane Mountain Fire Tower was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

There are indications that the Gulf Brook leanto, which had also been scheduled for removal, may be replaced, rehabilitated and relocated from its current location.

Now that they are paying attention, we should also remind the decision makers that locals have been drinking fresh, cold water

that comes from mountain springs since the time when people actually knew King Philip personally…and nobody has died yet.

Regional outdoor events abound Although winter’s white cloak has returned to the mountain peaks, the rivers are running clear and the stocking trucks have been on the road. Spring is here and the trout are active on the ponds. Get out and enjoy some outdoor events in your area!

Inaugural ADK Adventure Festival The 1st Annual Adirondack Adventure Festival will take place from April 30-May 2 throughout the village of North Creek. Featuring exciting outdoor activities for the whole family, the event will include guided road and mountain bike rides, guided hikes, canoe and kayak demo to highlight the numerous outdoor adventures available throughout the region.

There will also be fly fishing demos, equipment displays, helicopter rides, live music and food and drink specials at various locations throughout town.

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Although she came in last place, Martha Breyette of Saranac feels as though she won the city of Plattsburgh’s first half-marathon.

Completing the 13.1-mile race in just over 3 hours, Breyette didn’t do it alone — she crossed the finish line alongside another half-marathoner, Denise Koslicki of Plattsburgh.

“She and I were both kind of running around the same time, same pace,” explained Breyette. “We just kind of bonded.”

Along the way, Koslicki and Breyette began to discuss their lives, both having young daughters and looking to become healthier and more fit.

“We developed this bond,” Breyette said.

“I got probably midway through and we

were both saying, ‘I’m not going to leave you, you don’t leave me and we’ll finish this together.’”

Although Breyette said she had some problems along the way, especially at mile 10, when she began to get lightheaded, she and Koslicki ran across the finish line.

“I became completely overwhelmed,” she said of completing the race. “I was exhausted, but I was so elated. I was so proud of myself.”

Throughout the last 14 weeks, Breyette has been cataloguing her triumphs and tribulations in this publication, with one achievement being she lost 30 pounds through exercise and healthy eating.

“I still have a little ways to go that I’d like to achieve, but it’s a huge change and I’ve hit some good milestones,” she said.

One of the major goals, and the main reason for taking on the half-marathon chal-

lenge, was to become “fit by forty,” which Breyette feels she has mostly accomplished.

“Putting it into perspective that a year ago at this time I was just getting out of the hospital with my asthma ... I truly feel like I’m well on my way to being fit,” she said.

In the end, Breyette said her accomplishments could not have been achieved without the support of her husband, Ed, daughter, Abigail, and coach, Mary Duprey, along with the rest of her family.

“For someone who has been reading [my journal] and thinking they could do something, even if it’s one step towards a 5K ... know that there’s people out there that are going to do nothing but encourage you,” said Breyette. “They don’t need to be afraid or intimidated by something, just because it seems that you have to be a top athlete to do it.”

Escarole is a type of endive, a green leafy vegetable packed with nutrition. Escarole and White Bean Soup Recipe · 2 containers low sodium chicken or vegetable broth · 2 heads of escarole · 2 cans of rinsed cannelloni or white kidney beans · 1 onion · 3-5 cloves of garlic · 1 Tbsp. olive oil Sauté the onion and garlic in olive oil until tender. Cut up the escarole and add to the pot and cook it down. Add the beans and broth and simmer for 30-60 minutes.

sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Elevenyear-old Sara Bulriss understands the affects of cancer.

At just 10 years of age, Sara was diagnosed with Germinoma, a form of cancer in the pituitary gland at the bottom of the brain.

Although she’s in remission now, she is working to find a cure — by raising money and participating in the Plattsburgh Relay for Life 2010.

Her mother, Lisa Bulriss asked Sara why she chose to do the relay. “‘We need to find a cure for cancer,’” was Sara’s reply to her mother.

“She lost one grandmother from cancer, and her other grandmother is fighting it now and her grandfather is in remission, too,” explained Lisa.

Sara, who also took part in the relay last year, didn’t take part in any relay events to raise money, but donated nonetheless.

“She did donate some money that was given to her,” Lisa explained. “The community was very generous and she made a donation.”

This year, Sara is working with her team, “Circle of Hope,” to raise money through events, such as a car wash happening at Garvey Hyundai on Tom Miller Road, next Saturday, May 1.

“She’s a very strong person,” said Lisa. “She has the fight. And you know that she would love for someone to find a cure for cancer, so other people wouldn’t have to go through what she’s been through and what her family members have been through.”

Barb Nephew, a member of the Circle of Hope team, considers Sara to be “very gracious.”

“I think it’s a wonderful thing for her to do,” said Nephew of Sara taking part in the car wash. “It’s teaching her to give, and that’s a lifetime skill.”

Nephew said the car wash, which will happen from 9 a.m.

to 3 p.m., will raise funds for the team. Also, Garvey Hyundai will continue to give free car washes throughout the rest of the month, with any donation made to Relay for Life — which they will match.

During the May 1 event, which is also Paint the Town Purple Day, Nephew’s team will also provide lunch, a bake sale, a preview for Relay for Life items, as well as a luminaria sale.

“It’s the kick-off day for raising funds for American Cancer Society,” said Nephew.

“That is our purpose, to raise money to donate to the Cancer Society and my particular reason is for research.”

“We need to find a cure and we can’t do that without money,” she added. “That’s why this is so important. Every little bit helps in that.”

“Woodmen’s whole point is to help the community,” he said. “You can go to just about anybody in the organization ... there’s a love for animals. It’s just an easy cause to get behind.”

The Animal House Program provides information on how to build the dog house, which the Chazy lodge turned to CV-TEC for assistance.

“We had started with a model from Woodmen that was

www.northcountryman.com built and we brought it to CV-TEC,” said Gonyo. “They actually made it a little larger and redesigned it so we were following all the specs that were needed at the animal shelters.”

“They made it so it would cover any size dog,” he added.

Gonyo said he is now turning to the community for help with finishing the project.

Although CV-TEC students helped build the majority of the pieces needed for the dog houses, Gonyo said they still need people to help put it together.

“They don’t need a building background. There’s going to be plenty of people who know how to build,” he explained. “We’re just basically assembling them.”

The event will take place at the lodge on McAdam Road, Saturday, May 1, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. But people

“We’re going to be teaching people how to bake dog biscuits,” said Gonyo. “We’ll have a coloring contest for the kids.”

There will also be informational tables from sponsors of the event, including a veterinarian.

The day will also include ghost stories about phantom pets by local author Gordie Little.

“It’s a worthy cause,” Gonyo said. “We want to help these animal shelters and we’d love to have people come out and help us and see what we’re doing.”

“It’s our first time, so we’re feeling it out to see what works and what doesn’t,” he added, “and hopefully we’ll do it again.”

Ball field receives new scoreboard through man’s memorial donation

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com CHAZY — The newest addition to Chazy Central Rural School is one that will benefit the school and the community, thanks to a local businessman.

Glenn Latremore, owner of Latremore’s Insurance, recently made a donation to the school to cover the cost and installation of a new electronic scoreboard for the school’s baseball field. Latremore made the donation to replace the field’s former scoreboard, which he and his company also funded nearly 20 years ago. That board, he said, eventually stopped working and was in dire need of replacement.

“Every time I came down here to watch the game, I had to ask what the score was and how many outs there were and no one seemed to know, so that’s why I did it,” Latremore said with a laugh. “I

did it for the school and for the kids.”

Latremore also made the donation in memory of his late wife, Mary. Before her passing in 2007, the Latremores could always be seen together attending school sporting events, watching their children and eventually grandchildren play for the Eagles.

“We attended all the games — soccer, basketball, baseball. We came to them all,” he said.

Since his wife was such a sports fan, he asked the scoreboard simply be dedicated in her honor. So, in addition to Latremore’s Insurance, the top of the board reads simply: “In Memory of Mary.”

“Every time I come down, I’ll see her name,” said Latremore, who was overcome with emotion when the sign was dedicated at the baseball team’s league home opener April 20. “It’s a hard feeling,

to be honest with you. It feels good but it doesn’t. I’d much rather have her here.”

School superintendent Kevin J. Mulligan said he was very appreciative of Latremore’s donation, describing the local businessman as a “true gentleman in every sense of the word.”

“Glenn and Mary have always been very supportive of the school,” said Mulligan.

“Whenever our teams have gone to states, they and Latremore’s Insurance have always been among the first ones to come up with donations to help.”

“Glenn’s a real class act,” Mulligan added.

In addition to the lettering atop the scoreboard, Mulligan also presented Latremore with a plaque on behalf of the district that recognizes his donation. The plaque will be mounted to the scoreboard.

“We really appreciate this donation,” said Mulligan.

Community Appreciation Night set for next Thursday ROUSES POINT — Rouses Point Elementary will host a Community Appreciation Night, Thursday, April 29, from 7-8:15 p.m.

Duso is battling an inoperable form of liver cancer — her third bout with cancer to date.

BEEKMANTOWN — Gloria Duso will tell you — cancer sucks. In fact, it’s even printed on a T-shirt she proudly wears from time to time.

“My daughter found this on the Internet and knew I would love it, with our sense of humor,” she said.

Duso said it’s her sense of humor that’s played a big part in her surviving two bouts with cancer and in her facing her third round with the disease.

In 1989, doctors found Duso had a sacral tumor on her colon, leading her to undergo six weeks of radiation therapy in Boston, Mass., and undergo a colostomy.

“I figured better that than dead,” Duso said with a laugh.

The healing process after an evacuation of the tumor took almost a year. Duso’s husband, Stephen, helped by assisting her with her day-to-day medical needs like changing bandages.

“My husband, God bless him, has been just beyond what anybody could want for a spouse,” she said. “I never could have made it without him.”

Four years later, Duso went to her primary care physician complaining of a loss of her sense of smell. Though Duso said she never found out the reason, doctors found and eventually removed a small tumor from her brain.

“It was a very short process. Compared to the other one,

it was a walk in the park,” she said.

Then, last May, Duso went to her doctor with pains she thought were related to her gall bladder. However, an even worse diagnosis was given — an inoperable form of liver cancer.

“It’s a pretty rare form of cancer with no definitive cure right now,” Duso explained. “So, it’s a matter of finding something that can extend your life with a reasonable quality of life.”

Duso recently retired from her 38-year career with CVPH Medical Center, and now takes things “one day at a time.”

She’s currently undergoing chemotherapy and, in a few months, will undergo another medical evaluation to see if the treatments were successful.

“This wasn’t how I planned on ending my career,” she said.

“That says it all,” said Duso’s sister, Cynthia TrudoHamilton, as she looked at her sister ’s T-shirt. “She’s a testament to faith and love. That’s why she’s still here today.”

This Saturday, April 24, Duso will be surrounded by people she loves as a benefit is held for her at Gilligan’s Getaway, 7160 State Route 9, Plattsburgh, from 12-6 p.m. The event will consist of food, games, raffles, auctions and face painting for children. Performances by local bands Angry Neighbors, Nite Train, Jay Walken Band, The Mongrels, The Four Fathers, and Steve Borst will round out the event.
