Seventh Day Slumber, others to rock the fairgrounds Saturday By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com
MORRISONVILLE — Jared Hogle is doing what he can to bring a show that rocks to the North Country. And, he thinks he’s done it with the latest venture through his company, Solid Rock Promotions. Hogle has landed an appearance by three bands — Seventh Day Slumber, DecembeRadio, and Kiros — as part of the Inside Out Tour. The bands, which range from a “harder rock sound” with Seventh Day Slumber to southern rock with DecembeRadio, will play this Saturday, May 1, at the Clinton County Fairgrounds. “I just wanted to see more positive entertainment in our Lake Champlain region,” said

May Day for Relay Saturday, many events planned By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — It may be fun painting the town red, but Joan Sterling and Bonnie Berry are among many people who find painting it purple even better. The two are among supporters of the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life — an annual event slated for this June — who will be participating in “May Day for Relay” this Saturday, May 1. The day is set aside each year for the community to show solidarity in fighting cancer and promoting cancer awareness. “We’re trying to get all of Clinton County to go purple, which is the color we use for Relay for Life to symbolize all cancers,” explained Sterling, who also serves as community executive for the American Cancer Society. “We want people to wear purple clothes, put out a purple ribbon, a balloon — any sign of purple
at all to support Relay.” With this being the fifth year to get the local community to “go purple,” Sterling and Berry said they are hoping to see more splashes of the color throughout the North Country than ever. “I think, as a cancer survivor, to see the whole community behind you is so inspiring,” said Berry, who is a 15-year breast cancer survivor. “That helps us in the mission of Relay for Life, which is ‘Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back.’” However, this Saturday isn’t only for plans for purple to permeate every community. As first reported in last week’s edition, “Circle of Hope,” one of the many teams slated to participate in this year ’s Relay for Life, will raise money by hosting a car wash and bake sale at Garvey Hyundai on Tom Miller Road from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Henry’s Pools and Spas on Big Hank Plaza Road will also welcome Ea-

tainment by The Boobie Sisters, a well-known comedy and music group composed of local breast cancer survivors. “It’s going to be a great event,” said Sterling. “And, it’ll be a great place to shop early for a Mother ’s Day gift — and for Father ’s Day, too,” said Berry. Bid for the Cure will start with the silent auction at 5 p.m., followed by the live auction at 6 p.m., featuring local politicians assisting the auctioneer. The cost for admission for Bid for the Cure will be $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Superintendency a homecoming for John Fairchild ‘Silver Star By Jeremiah S. Papineau Banner Day’ recognized this Saturday jeremiah@denpubs.com
By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com DANNEMORA — The village of Dannemora has set aside a new day each year to honor the sacrifice of men and women in the Armed Forces. The village board recently passed a resolution unanimously to declare this Saturday, May 1, “Silver Star Banner Day.” The motion was made by Trustee Eric G. Jarvis, and seconded by Trustee Kathleen E. Kiroy. According to Silver Star Families of America — the nonprofit organization which established the day of recognition — Silver Star Banner Day is “the permanent and official day to honor the wounded and ill soldiers of the village of Dannemora.” Mayor Michael L. Bennett said though no official ceremonies or festivities are planned for Silver Star Banner Day, it’s a day for people to take a moment to remember those who fight for our country. “I think this is a great way to honor [service members]. In the past, we haven’t honored them the way we should,” said Bennett. “The main thing is for people to thank the ones they know.” Though Gov. David A. Paterson signed a proclamation earlier this year recognizing Silver Star Banner Day at the state level, individual municipalities were also invited to adopt their own resolutions to the same effect. According to www.silverstarfamilies.org, the only other municipality in the local area to do so was the village of Keeseville.
CHAZY — There’s a familiar face coming to town. John H. Fairchild has been named the new superintendent of the Chazy Central Rural School District by the district’s board of education. Fairchild will assume the superintendency July 1 following the retirement of current superintendent Kevin J. Mulligan. “Kevin and I are going to talk and he’ll fill me in on things going on in the school now,” said Fairchild, “and I’ll spend several months just sitting back and listening to people in the community and the school to see where we can go from there.” “The nice thing is I don’t think there’s a lot of fixing that needs to be done,” he added. “It’s a really good school district with a lot of great things going on.” Fairchild, who will also serve as high school principal as part of his new responsibilities, will be staying close to his roots. He served as principal of Plattsburgh
High School for more than three years until being denied tenure in March 2009. The highly-controversial decision by the Plattsburgh City School District’s board of education sparked an outcry from the public, though Fairchild moved on to accept the principalship at Salmon River Central High School in Fort Covington. Fairchild, who lives in Plattsburgh, has been traveling more than 120 miles round-trip on a daily basis and said he’s looking forward to the shorter commute. “It will save me about two hours a day in driving,” said Fairchild. Fairchild is originally from Chazy and is a 1977 CCRS graduate. The feeling of going back to his alma mater on the other side of the academic table is “pretty good,” he said. “The chance to go home and give back to the school that gave me a really fine education is exciting,” Fairchild said, adding he has “very fond memories” of the school. “I’m excited to meet everyone that’s working there and continue on the fine tradition at Chazy.”

Intellectual property rights The Ticket to Work Program
T
here are many forms of intellectual property. Examples include a musician’s song, an artist’s painting and a photographer ’s picture. If a photographer ’s picture is placed on the Web, what is the mechanism that protects the intellectual property? The answer is the World Intellectual Property Organization, an agency of the United Nations. The World Intellectual Property Organization, or WIPO, is considered to be the watchdog of the international intellectual property system. Watching intellectual property is a huge task to say the least. Start with content found on the Web, add most of the music in the world, toss in every movie made in the last 20 years, and then consider most software available today. And, we’re only scratching the surface. Each year, World Intellectual Property Day is observed on April 26 with events that seek to raise public awareness and understanding of intellectual property. This year ’s theme was “Innovation — Linking the World.” Along with the normal observance of World IP Day, this year brought two milestones related to intellectual property. First,
WIPO celebrated the 10th anniversary of World Intellectual Property Day and, second, their 40th anniversary of existence. What kinds of things does WIPO do for World Intellectual Property Day? Well, they do the normal, predictable things an organization might do. For instance, they make outreach material available on their Web site for anyone to use in local By Ron Poland awareness campaigns. They also provide a list of activities by country for those interested in that sort of thing. Out of curiosity I checked the list for United States events and found only one. It was a showcase of Western American Folklore held at the U.S. Mission in Geneva, Switzerland, with a presentation on the life and art of Poet Henry Real Bird.

Knowing about your mulches
N
atural, or organic, mulches are an excellent way to retain soil moisture, add organic material to the soil, and reduce the amount of weeds in the garden. Natural mulches include pine needles, straw, grass clippings, wood chips, and shredded bark. Another mulch becoming common to find is cocoa shells. Cocoa shell mulch is an attractive, dark mulch that will not bleach in the sun and is fairly easy to use because is lightweight. It is a natural by-product of the chocolate industry, so it is also environmentally-friendly and, for the first few weeks, has a pleasant chocolate aroma. Unfortunately, this mulch is not for everyone. Pet owners — especially dog owners — should steer clear of this mulch. The cocoa shells, just like chocolate, contain the chemical theobromine. This naturally occurring compound — found in many plants, including cocoa beans — can be harmful to dogs. And, the mulch has an odor that many dogs find attractive to eat. A few years ago, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals investigated several cases in which dogs ingested cocoa mulch. The organization studied those cases in response to the growing number of reports about dogs eating that type of mulch. The ASPCA’s study revealed: • Vomiting was reported in 50 percent of the cases
• Tremors were reported in 33 percent of the cases. In these cases, the amount of cocoa mulch ingested by the dogs was described as “large or significant” • Tachycardia (rapid heart rate), hyperactivity, or diarrhea were reported in 17 percent of the cases • High amounts of cocoa mulch can cause tachycardia, muscle tremors, seizures, and even death. One dog died after eating a large amount of cocoa bean shell mulch that contained 0.46 percent theobromine • There were no clinical signs of illness in 33 percent of the cases • 67 percent of the cases came from dogs in California What does this mean for consumers? Well, if you own a dog you probably should not use cocoa shell mulch. Even if you have a discerning dog that turns his nose up to most doggy delicacies, you never know if he will find this potentially dangerous mulch to be a tasty treat! If you are not a pet owner, cocoa mulch is a great, environmentally-friendly organic mulch for your gardens! Calling all volunteers
W
hat do we call people that, with willing hearts, give to their community week after week, year after year, expecting nothing in return? We call them volunteers. At the North Country Chapter American Red Cross more than 400 volunteers know the satisfaction of helping others. They know that Magic Johnson was right when he said, “You’re the only one who can make the difference.” Red Cross volunteers save the day. They provide a place to stay and emotional support when their neighbors are faced with a home fire or other disaster. They teach lifesaving safety courses such as first aid, CPR, baby sitting and care giving. Volunteers connect military families, work at the blood drives, and, in general, take the actions needed to provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.
This year, April 1824 was designated National Volunteer Week, a time to recognize the selfless gifts of time and money the Red Cross has received from the citizens of this North Country Community. Thank you; without your gifts we could not fulfill the Red Cross mission. Though National Volunteer Week has passed, we still invite you join us. If you are not a volunteers, give the Red Cross a try. Red Crossers are people who are trained to perform extraordinary acts in the face of emergencies. Right now, we especially need people who would like to help out in the office, become a volunteer caseworker or become a part of the Disaster Action Team. To volunteer, please contact Jeanie Roberts at 561-7280. The Red Cross Corner is a monthly column provided by the North Country chapter of the American Red Cross. The chapter may be reached at 561-7280 or via e-mail at nccarc@westelcom.com.
Checking out the bar code of the future S
harp-eyed readers have noticed a change in the bar codes on some coupons and they wrote in to ask about them. The bar code you see on the left side of a manufacturer-supplied coupon is the traditional, GTIN-12 Universal Price Code that has been in use since 1974. This code revolutionized supermarket shopping and coupon redemption when it was introduced, since it allowed cashiers to automatically scan products and coupons at checkout time versus manually entering prices and coupon values. The bar code on the right is the newer GS1 DataBar. The GS1 bar codes first started appearing on coupons in 2007 alongside the traditional bar codes. In 2010, a phase-out of the traditional 12-digit UPC is planned and once it’s complete we’ll no longer see the old-style bar codes on coupons. Why the switch? While the older bar code system has worked well for years, the newer system offers more features for both stores and manufacturers to track and monitor sales. With the current UPC, coupons are limited in the values that can be assigned to them. The old bar code doesn’t offer enough ways to configure data in order to offer the widest possible variety of redemption amounts. The new system will allow customized coupon values in any amount up to $999.99 (which would be a very valuable coupon, indeed!) The new bar code also contains the expiration date for the coupon, a valuable tool for stores and cashiers who previously had to verify expiration dates manually. (Believe it or not, current bar codes do not validate the expiration date at all, so this is an important improvement to help reduce coupon fraud for retailers too.) Additionally, the GS1 DataBar carries a much wider range of information specific to the product that the coupon is to be used for. The older UPC uses a system of “family codes” to help the register determine which item or items the coupon can be scanned with. However, this system has unfortunately been abused, both accidentally and intentionally, by shoppers. With the old family codes, the register checks to make sure that the product purchased falls into a matching family of products made by the manufacturer. But in many cases, more than one product may be recognized as a “match” for that coupon if the
product also happens to be part of the same family. This left the door wide open for coupon abuse. For example, let’s say you have a coupon for a box of cereal “16 ounces or larger.” When you get to the store, you grab the 12-ounce box by mistake, use your coupon ... and it scans just fine! Whether you intended to or not, you’ve just committed coupon fraud. You have used a coupon on an item it wasn’t specified for. Mistakes like this occasionally do happen. Where UPC family codes become a real problem, though, is when people intentionally abuse the system by trying to determine what other (often, completely unrelated) products they might be able to use a coupon for. One of the most flagrant abuses came to my attention via a story detailed in a popular coupon blog. People supposedly used $10 coupons for By Jill Cataldo teeth-whitening strips to buy baby diapers. The same company made both of these products and the coupons intended for whitening strips successfully scanned when a shopper purchased diapers instead. If the shoppers were successful in slipping their coupons by an unsuspecting cashier, they fraudulently enjoyed huge savings on diapers instead of the whitening strips. The new GS1 DataBar will completely eliminate this kind of “off-label” coupon use, since the new bar code carries very detailed information about the type, size and variety of product the coupon is good for. It can contain information about the geographical region of the country the coupon is to be redeemed in — even limiting use to a specific store. Stores around the country are already in the process of transitioning to the new system. Having both sets of bar codes on our coupons during this transition ensures that no matter whether a store is still using the older bar code system or has already started to utilize the new DataBar, our coupons will scan at the register.

Oh, that unpredictable Adirondack weather! streams finally topped the 50 degree mark, a barrier considered ideal for mayflies to hatch. However, it now appears hatching mayflies will have to compete with snowflakes for airspace. Hopefully, the storm will pass without much disturbance. However, I’m willing to take whatever the weather has to offer, because I’ve been angling on borrowed time for the entire month of April.
Value of a flowing stream In the course of my travels, I visit a lot of small towns and villages across the Adirondacks. I always enjoy meeting residents of the local communities and listening to their cares and concerns. Our local communities share similar problems ranging from aging populations to activities for area youth, as well as state mandates and a looming economic crisis. I’ll always maintain a certain affinity for the little village of Elizabethtown; it’s where I grew up. Typical of other rural communities, the village has struggled in recent years with aging infrastructures ranging from bridges to waterworks and from energy efficient, office space to a new county jail.
Nestled comfortably in the mountain shadows of the Adirondack High Peaks, and within easy striking distance of the wonderful Lake Champlain, the tiny hamlet is graced with an abundance of natural attractions. Possibly, the community’s greatest asset is its most commonly overlooked resource. It is the most prominent natural feature and it fosters a connection between the High Peaks to the west, with the Big Lake to the east. Scientists already predict, that in future years, it’s a natural resource that will prove more valuable than oil. They’re talking water, the type of fresh, clear, clean water that flows through almost every single, settlement in the park. There is little doubt that eventually an alternative will be discovered to replace oil. But there is no replacement for fresh water. It is impossible to ascribe a dollar figure on the value of a single stream as no one can fix a price tag on the wonders of nature, the aesthetics of a caressing stream. Elizabethtown has the Boquet River, which flows out of the soaring peaks of the Dix Range and meanders gently through the Pleasant

Valley and the farmlands of Willsboro to Lake Champlain. The Boquet is not the only river that runs through it, as there are also numerous creeks, streams, brooks, rivulets and cricks that regularly drain the nearby hills. Over the years, running water provided power for the mills and innumerable pleasures for those that manned them. It has manifested its power in terrible floods and soothed many a worried soul, who sought solace from its gentle flow. Fresh water is the lifeblood of our communities. It provides communities with inexpensive entertainment via fishing poles, swimming holes or a solitary paddle along a placid stillwater. It also drives the freshwater tourism that forms the basis of the Adirondack economy.

s I work on this week’s column, an ominous warning sounds from the radio: “A winter storm watch is in effect from Tuesday morning through Wednesday afternoon….the National Weather Service in Burlington has issued a winter storm watch for heavy snow across the Northern Adirondacks ….with the potential for 6 to 12 inches of heavy, wet snow with temperatures near freezing through much of the event.” Earlier in the morning, I had been complaining to my wife about the plague of dandelions that had consumed our front lawn, and May hadn’t even arrived yet. I knew recent weather patterns had been just too good to be true. Usually, by this time of year, I’d be waiting for ice-out to get on the water and chomping the bit to wet a line. Instead, I’ve spent the past three weeks on the ponds, catching trout with reckless abandon. The season’s weather has been as fantastic as the angling and I’ve been forced to coverup only with sunscreen, rather than the usual dose of bug dope. Just yesterday, water temperatures on the

Understanding occupational therapy By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — “To Live Life to Its Fullest” is the motto of occupational therapists at CVPH Medical Center. For April, Occupational Therapy Month, they want people to understand how they do it. Troy Canada, who has been doing occupational therapy for nine years, explained many people don’t realize OT is far different from physical therapy. “Even the doctors still don’t know the difference between OT and PT,” he said. “We’re really two opposite ends of the spectrum.” Canada explained OT helps people work on “self-care types of deficits.” “The things that people have to do to take care of themselves on a daily basis,” he said. “That also includes things like home management; being able to prepare their own meals.”
Physical therapy, on the other hand, literally helps people gain back their physical abilities. “We do cross paths a little bit,” Canada explained of OT and PT. “Because, in order to be able to walk to the kitchen to be able to prepare meals, sometimes you’ll work on getting from one place to the other, to make sure that you can do that safely.” One way in which occupational therapists work with clients is by giving them adaptive equipment, Canada said. “Like sock aids to get their socks on, or ... long-handled reachers so they can get dressed. Things like that,” he explained. OT, however, can be broken down into various subgroups, such as hand therapy or lymphedema, or pediatrics. Becky McCambridge, a hand therapist, works with various injuries. “She does upper extremity disfunction,” said Canada. “So,
whether someone has carpel tunnel syndrome, shoulder injuries, she makes splints for people’s hands and arms.” Occupational therapists also work in the school system. “With kids that have different learning deficits,” Canada said. “We try to make it so they can function in school. Give teachers any type of techniques to make it easier for the student to be able to focus on learning objectives.” Although the root word of OT is “occupation,” Canada said it doesn’t just pertain to people who have jobs or careers. “The term ‘occupation’ could be anyone’s occupation,” he said. “If you’re a student, your occupation is a student. We work on that person being able to function in that particular role.” Currently, for someone to receive services from an OT at CVPH, they must receive a referral from their doctor.
Becky McCambridge, a certified hand therapist with CVPH Medical Center’s department of rehabilitation, works on a client who needs help regaining strength in her hand.
Making the time for an express workout
A
s a great relief to many, you don’t need to exercise for hours a day to lose weight, feel great, and get in excellent shape. I personally implement a half-hour training protocol with my clients with fantastic results. Get in, get out — that’s the plan. Start with a brief warm up to get the blood flowing and pick 2-5 exercises that focus on total body movements or use the bigger muscle groups, like squats, push-ups, pullups, etc. Perform the exercises in a circuit form with little to no rest between sets un-
til you have completed the number of desired sets, or until you reach your time limit. The following is an example workout you can do anywhere with no equipment needed: • 25 bodyweight squats • 15 push-ups Modify push-ups if necessary by executing from knees or against a wall. To make it harder, try putting your feet up on a bench or lift one leg in the air. Do the previous circuit as many times as you can in 20 minutes, and make sure you have some motivating music on to
drive you to the end. Just think that when you’re done, you’re done! Most of all remember, to have fun. This workout can be modified by shortening the length of time which is recommended for those with little to no exercise experience. This workout is not for everyone. MORRISONVILLE — They’re doing it all for Penny. Friends and family of Penny A. Burl will gather this Sunday, May 2, at Cocktails, 42 River St., for a benefit in Burl’s honor. Burl — who lives in Peru with her husband, Timothy, and their son Josh, 15, and daughter Taylor, 9 — was recently diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer and is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment at CVPH’s Fitzpatrick Cancer Center in Plattsburgh. Her sister-in-law, Paula Agoney, has been organizing the benefit for the past month to help with Burl’s medical expenses. Burl has been employed full-time at Salerno Plastics in Plattsburgh, but has been unable to work due to her illness. “She’s full of life and has a good sense of humor and
that’s helping her through this,” said Agoney. “She’s a pretty strong person.” Agoney said she hopes the community comes out to support her sister-in-law, whom she said is a very good person who’s been dealt a bad hand. “I think it’s great when people come out and help someone else in the community when they’re dealing with difficult health issues like this,” she said. This Sunday’s benefit will be held from 12 p.m. 6 p.m. and include a bake sale, live music, auctions, and a 50/50 drawing. Michigans and fries will be sold two for a $5 donation. Those unable to attend the benefit but would still like to help the Burl family may send donations in care of Burl to Helen Agoney, 204 Reservoir Road, Peru N.Y. 12972. For more information about this Sunday’s benefit, contact Paula Agoney at 834-9729.

Run to honor memory of Frankie Garrow
Rocking From page 1 Hogle, “and their message is one of hope and a positive focus.” During their shows, Seventh Day Slumber does more than play music, Hogle said. The band’s lead singer talks about his past addiction to cocaine and how he overcame it. “He talks about how he was arrested and how he should be dead now because of his drug overdoses,” said Hogle. “All the band members have stories ranging from severe depression to being suicidal and other issues.” The stories the bandmembers tell on stage marries well with their music, that has lyrics about the struggles they’ve had in their lives, said Hogle. “Their music isn’t like a lot of rock and roll; it doesn’t glorify stuff like sex and drugs,” he said. “They try to speak to their audience to help people move forward in their life.” Hogle, who by day is a teacher with the Plattsburgh City School District, feels it’s important to stress positive messages like that to young people. “I think our youth right now are really starving for change and really want something different,” said Hogle. “Events like this give a high school kid or even a family a place to go out and know that there’s not going to be alcohol served or have the kind of garbage that happens at your typical rock concerts.” “It’s just really a positive outlet to be around, where you can socialize in a safe and friendly environment,” he added. Gates open for this Saturday’s show at 5:30 p.m., with the show to start at 7 p.m. Admission is $15 and tickets are available at Big Apple Audio, Adirondack Chocolatier, Great Adirondack Soup Company and the McSweeney’s location on State Route 3. Tickets are also available on-line at www.solidrockpromo.com. Discounted rates are available for groups of 10 or more.
By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com CHAZY — Frankie Garrow, an 18-yearold who attended Chazy Central Rural School, will be remembered through a scholarship fund run/walk this Saturday, May 1. Frankie’s cousin, Eric Munson, had the idea to do something for Frankie — who lost his life in an automobile accident in December — after running the Frostbite Run in Rouses Point in February. “My idea was just trying to start a run and I was hoping to get like a hundred runners and raise a $1,000 for a scholarship,” Munson explained. “And, it just took off.” With word spreading through Facebook, more than 200 people have already confirmed attending the event. “It makes me so very proud, very honored that people loved my son so much,” said Irene Garrow, Frankie’s mother. Although Munson was surprised at how many people have said they’d attend the event, Irene wasn’t. “He was so well-liked at Chazy that the school alone, I knew we’d have a big turnout,” she said. “The whole senior class is going and all the younger kids are going, teachers are going. Family and
friends of ours and Frankie’s.” All of the proceeds from the day’s event — which will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Chazy Recreation Park — will go directly to the Frankie Garrow Scholarship Fund. As Frankie would have graduated this year, Irene is not completely sure how she wants to decide who will receive the scholarship. “Chazy being so small, I know every one of the kids,” said Irene. “We do know that they have to be going to college and it has to go to a Chazy student. Other than that, we haven’t totally decided.” Irene added she may give scholarship money to more than one student, depending on how much they raise at the event. In the future, she has considered giving it to a Chazy student who will be going into criminal justice, the degree Frankie had planned to go to Canton University for. Pre-registration for the race is $10, or $15 the day of the event. Forms can be picked up at the Homestead Restaurant, 9481 State Route 9; Stewart’s Shops, 9165 State Route 9; or CCRS, 609 Miner Farm Road. Forms may also be found on-line at www.chazy.org, where T-shirts may also be ordered. “I know Frankie had a big heart and he would do it for other people,” said Irene.
