People encouraged to ‘Saddle Up for St. Jude’ this Sunday By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com SARANAC — Daphne Wright and her family want to bring smiles to the faces of sick children. That’s why the Wright family will host a fundraiser at their Nashville Road farm this Sunday, May 16, to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. The event, called “Saddle Up for St. Jude,” will consist of a trail ride and other activities, all to help children with life-threatening diseases and conditions. Wright said she got the idea to host the event from the Clinton County 4-H program, of which her family are members. The program encourages participants to be “community conscious” and help initiatives like St. Jude. “As a parent, one of my biggest fears has always been something happening to one of my children, like them getting sick,” she said. When she learned about Saddle Up for St. Jude, Wright said she thought it would be a great way

ing money for St. Jude is it’s for an organization that’s made great strides in cancer research. “They took cancers and childhood illnesses that had a survival rate of 2 percent and have raised it to 80-90 percent,” said Wright. “That’s pretty amazing.” The free admission event at 3D Farm will begin this Sunday at 12 p.m., with a blessing of the horses by Jamie Grubb. An 8-mile ride will be led by Wright down the abandoned railroad tracks, circling around the Chazy Lake Road. A miniature horse and pony parade will be held at 2 p.m. and a magic show featuring Eric Maynard will be held at 3 p.m. Fiddler Joe Gero will also provide musical entertainment. The event will also consist of food, 50-50 raffles, prize basket drawings, and a flea market. Those interested in more information or directions to the farm, located at 190 Nashville Road, may contact Wright at 293-7624. Flea market space is still available and free, added Wright. The event will be held rain or shine.

to help those less fortunate. “I’ve been blessed. All my children are healthy, so I’m thankful,” said Wright. “That’s why I wanted to do this, to give back.” What Wright likes best about the event is that it encourages donations that she sends directly to St. Jude. “When you sign up to host [Saddle Up for St. Jude], you receive an envelope, get sponsors and donations for the ride, turn in the money and every penny goes right to St. Jude,” explained Wright. “This money doesn’t get watered down anywhere. It goes directly to the source.” That’s important to Wright because she’s exceeded the amount of sponsorship she had planned on for the event, she said. “We’ve had a wonderful response,” said Wright. “The community as a whole has just turned out in full force. Our original goal was to raise $1,000, but now, we’re looking at much closer to $10,000.” “I get all choked up when I start to think about it,” she added. What excites Wright about rais-

Let me count the ways

indows 7 has been out about six months now and, while I can’t say it was my idea, I can say I really like the new operating system. Beyond performing better than Vista and XP in nearly every bench-marked test, the OS offers new or refined tools one of which is the calculator. The old calculator did basic chores well enough for whatever mode it was placed in. I often used it in “Scientific” mode to double-check my math when converting between hexadecimal, binary and decimal. The calculator in Windows 7 has new modes with various templates that bring number crunching to a whole new level. Open the calculator by clicking the Start button, All Programs, Accessories and finally the Calculator which should be near the top of the list. Once open, click View on the menu bar to see the current and other choices on the sub-menu. The old options are there along with two new ones, “Programmer” and “Statistics”. Need to know the difference between two dates? Go further down the View menu, select “Date Calculation”, input the desired dates, and click calculate. Think-

Seniors and their self-esteem

ing about a new mortgage and wondering about the payment amount or want gas mileage figures? Select “Worksheets” from the bottom of the View menu to see templates designed for doing those kinds of tasks. An odd thing about the calculator is the decimal is grayed-out in Programmer mode. By Ron Poland Users must switch to another mode for calculations with a decimal point. Tooltip pop-ups that give users tips when hovering over a button were not included in the new design. But the calculator was resized with a nod toward soon to be released touchscreen devices where users will presumably be able to use the buttons on the screen as if using an actual calculator.

elf-esteem rises steadily as people age but starts declining around the time of retirement, according to a longitudinal study of men and women ranging in age from 25 to 104. “Self-esteem is related to better health, less criminal behavior, lower levels of depression and, overall, greater success in life,” said the study's lead author, Ulrich Orth, PhD. “Therefore, it's important to learn more about how the average person's self-esteem changes over time.” Self-esteem was lowest among young adults but increased throughout adulthood, peaking at age 60, before it started to decline. These results are reported in the latest issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, published by the American Psychological Association. Four times between 1986 and 2002, researchers surveyed a total of 3,617 adults living in the United States. On average, women had lower self-esteem than did men throughout most of adulthood, but self-esteem levels converged as men and women reached their 80s and 90s. Education, income, health and employment status all had some effect on the self-esteem trajectories, especially as people aged. “Specifically, we found that people who have higher incomes and better health in later life tend to maintain their self-esteem as they age,” said Orth

People of all ages in satisfying and supportive relationships tend to have higher selfesteem, according to the findings. However, despite maintaining higher self-esteem throughout their lives, people in happy relationships experienced the same drop in self-esteem during old age as people in unhappy relationships. There are numerous theories as to why self-esteem peaks in middle age and then drops after retirement, said the researchers. “Midlife is a time of highly stable work, family and romantic relationships. People increasingly occupy positions of power and status, which might promote feelings of self-esteem,” said coauthor Richard Robins, PhD, of the University of California, Davis. “In contrast, older adults may be experiencing a change in roles such as an empty nest, retirement and obsolete work skills in addition to declining health.”

Saving the planet and money

S

ometimes there are things we would like to do to help conserve the environment, but the cost can be prohibitive to someone on a budget. Luckily, there are quite a few things we can do in our lives that benefit the earth and our balance in our bank accounts. One simple step we can take to help save the earth and the environment is to install rain barrels. The water the barrels collect would normally flow off the roof, into roof gutters, over the road, and into the storm water system. Often, the water that flows over paved surfaces picks up pollutants such as oil, sediment, and chemicals which then wash into our lakes and rivers. Rain barrels prevent this by greatly reducing the amount of storm water washing over our driveways and roads. Using a rain barrel can also help decrease your water bills. Residential water use increases 40-50 percent during the summer as we water our lawns and gardens. The water rain barrels collect can be used to water lawns and landscaping plants during dry summer periods. It is estimated that using rain barrels to water your lawn and gardens can reduce summer water use by more than 1,000 gallons — greatly reducing your summer water bill!

Editorial/Opinion • North Countryman - 5

www.northcountryman.com

Rain barrels can be purchased ready to use. If you would like to save initial costs, you can easily construct a rain barrel with reused 50 gallon plastic barrels or an inexpensive garbage can. The top of the barrel should be screened to prevent mosquitoes from breeding in the barrels. Then a hole is drilled towards the bottom of the barrel where a spout is fastened. All the materials for this project can be purchased at a hardware store for around $15 One important thing to remember is the water collected in rain barrels is not safe for human consumption. (Birds and other animals are up on the roofs and the bacteria from their droppings can wash into the barrel). The water is safe for lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers. If you would like to use the water for a vegetable garden, avoid using overhead irrigation. Use drip or trickle irrigation at the base of the plant. This prevents contamination of edible above ground plant parts that are hard to clean, such as lettuces, spinach, and other greens. Prior to eating any vegetable irrigated with rain barrel water, thoroughly wash the produce in drinkable water first. Never use rain barrel water to wash fresh vegetables and fruit. This I am looking forward to reducing my water bill and saving water by converting some unused garbage cans I have sitting around the house. Vested rights Assertions have been made Penn Energy’s proposed 13 wind turbines, conditionally permitted by Beekmantown’s Zoning Board of Appeals Jan. 31, 2007, violates the West Beekmantown Neighborhood Association (WBNA) faction’s vested rights on land they’ve put under considerable development for housing. They therefore want the taxsaving, clean energy wind project blocked. But Penn Energy has vested rights too. They’ve invested considerable money answering WBNA’s nuisance lawsuits, since at least 2007. They’ve completed some construction: there’s a meteorological tower on wind farm land, which assesses wind strength/direction and consistence, revealing further construction’s feasibility. Also, based on the experience of some of my acquaintances at Noble Environmental Power (which recently built over 380 megawatts of wind power in this and adjoining Franklin Counties), I am assuming Penn Energy goes through the same

Learning the rules of the couponing road I

lengthy, costly permitting procedures New York State requires of projects that really do pollute. Without all the above paperwork and construction, Penn Energy cannot proceed, therefore actions on them were directed toward that goal, contributing to its vested rights to continue. I can see some vested rights with both WBNA and Penn Energy. Given variation in the effects the housing downturn and various wind projects have had on real-estate values, WBNA may lose, break even, or even gain money from this wind farm’s construction. But, if Penn Energy never builds and operates their project, they will definitely lose – heavily! In my opinion, compromising could let the project proceed as planned, without guaranteeing harm to either party. Like it or not though, no investment comes without risk. Incidentally, if you want wind energy to be able to help with your taxes, I would suggest attending Beekmantown's next meeting: May 17, Town Hall, Spellman Road, 7 p.m.; and speak out. Without your presence (and expressed preference), how can the board know?

Happy birthday, dad

T

he year was 1979 and I was relishing in the thought of accompanying my father, brother and uncles on our annual trip to our fishing cabin deep in the Canadian outback. At the time, the brook trout there were nearly as plentiful as the black flies and fish in the fiveand six-pound classes were not uncommon. We’d laugh, enjoy each other ’s company and forget about the dayto-day worries we’d left behind. The fish were a treat to catch, but were secondary to the camaraderie of close family. It was from these trips that my love of the woods and water first emerged, and I owe a lot of that to my father for introducing me. So when I had an opportunity recently to repay at least part of that favor, I jumped at the chance. My dad turned 75 May 2. In recognition, he had one simple request: to celebrate his birthday with his two

sons on a brook trout pond. I began planning several months ago to make that request a reality and spent the last week fishing with my dad in the St. Regis Canoe Area. The trip was everything I knew it could be — a flashback to the days when my father was the one working so my brother and I could experience the pristine beauty of a glass-like pond at first light, capped by the fight of a spunky brook trout. I don’t think I’ve seen my father laugh so much in years and upon our return, he told me he will never forget his 75th birthday. Neither will I, dad. Nor will I forget who I have to thank for showing me that the best things in life aren’t things. Happy birthday, dad.

Plattsburgh Farmers and Crafters Introducing Market opens for season Saturday ‘workout of the month’

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh Farmers and Crafters Market has returned. The market will hold its annual grand opening this Saturday, May 15, with dozens of local producers and vendors lined up for the season. Market manager Patricia Parker said she’s been looking forward to the return of market season, which typically runs from mid-May through October. “I can’t wait. It’s like a breath of fresh air to go back to the market,” she said. This year, the market will feature many of the same vendors market-goers have come to know and do business with, said Parker. Businesses like Lamoy’s Produce and Greenhouse, Conroy’s Organics and Underwood Herbs, as well as Parker ’s own family business, Parker Family Maple Farm, will be among those returning. However, this year ’s market will also feature some new businesses, too. “We’re going to have Quarry Gardens from Chazy, which will have organic garlic, eggplant, and specialty things like that,” said Parker. Just Call Me Cupcake, a new business in Plattsburgh, will also be among new faces at the market. “Guess what they make,” Parker said with a laugh. Stonehouse Vineyard from Mooers will also be at the market, returning after participating in the market for their first time last year. “They tried out the market a couple times last year and loved it,” said Parker, adding another winery, Amazing Grace Vineyard and Winery from Chazy, has also signed on to participate. The popularity of the Plattsburgh

Farmers and Crafters Market — which has been located in the Durkee Street Pavilion since 1991 — seems to grow every year, said Parker. In her opinion, that’s because of what vendors can offer the people who stop there. “They know they’re getting a quality product,” she said. “They know where it’s coming from and what’s in it and what isn’t. Not only that, it’s familyoriented and it’s a nice place to come down and visit.” The market has not only seen great support during its existence from customers, said Parker, but from vendors as well. “We’ve been doing this so long they’re just like family,” she said. Though the market has a full list of vendors already lined up, Parker said she encourages those interested in par-

ticipating to reach out to her or — better yet — stop by the market. “It’s a really great way to get your name out there,” Parker said of being a market vendor. “Once people find out you have a quality product, it snowballs.” The market will be open this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and remain open Saturdays during the same hours through Oct. 9. The market will also be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesdays beginning June 23, until Sept. 22. Currently, Parker still has space available for someone who would like to provide entertainment this Saturday. For more information, including reserving space at the market or booking a performance at the market’s grand opening, contact Parker at 493-6761.

ast month, I talked about express workouts and getting a great workout in a short amount of time with little to no equipment. I’ve decided to contribute a monthly express workout to keep you motivated with a fresh workout you can add to your routine each month. Remember these workouts are intense and are not for everyone. If you are not sure how to execute an exercise properly, please seek the advice of a certified personal trainer or feel free to contact me with any questions. I will be offering modifications for different levels. Please choose the level that is appropriate for you, and get medical clearance from your doctor if you are new to exercise.

May’s Workout of the Month Complete 5 sets for time (record your time at the end)

For this workout, you will want to time yourself and keep track of how long it takes you to complete it. I wouldn’t suggest doing this workout on a daily basis, but you can do it weekly to see how you are progressing. If you cannot do pull ups you can use an assisted pull up machine or perform an inverted row. If you cannot do standard pushups, you can modify them by doing them from your knees or against a wall. Burgh to become a battlefield By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The Civil War is coming to town. The Clinton County Historical Association, in conjunction with the 11th New York Battery Light Artillery and the Alexandria Battery CSA will host a Civil War reenactment this Saturday, May 15, and Sunday, May 16, on the grounds of the former Plattsburgh Air Force Base off Washington Road. Wayne and Matthew Hewson, a father-son team from West Chazy, are overseeing this year ’s event, excited to continue a tradition of hosting reenactments year after year in the city. “It’s growing every year,” said Wayne. “We have more posters out, word of mouth is out there. So, we’re hoping to have a decent crowd with decent weather.” Last year, the event received heavy rain the first day of the twoday event. However, the Hewsons said that doesn’t stop the reenactors from taking the field. “It happens rain or shine,” said Wayne. “There was no stopping

back then if there was rain. No matter what the weather was, the battle went on.” The free event will be the same as in years passed, said Matthew, with the exception of additional artillery for this year ’s battles. “We have two more artillery pieces coming — cannons — so we’re looking forward to having six guns in total on the field,” said Matthew, “which will definitely up the noise.” Dannemora Federal Credit Union has also made a financial contribution toward the reenactment that will help with the expense of cannon powder, a key ingredient for the recipe to a great performance, said Wayne. “It’s nice to see they’re supporting this local event,” said Wayne. When some here think of the Civil War, they don’t necessarily realize it was a war that was directly connected to the North Country, said Wayne. “When you think about the Civil War, a lot of people think about Gettysburg, but that’s not the only focal point of it. “There were people from the

North Country that actually did fight in the Civil War,” he said, “two of which were the 60th New York Infantry Regiment and the 118th Regiment, which are going to be portrayed this weekend.” “There’s a wealth of units that came from this area,” he added. One-hundred-twenty reenactors from across the country are expected to represent the Union and Confederate sides this weekend, representing fighting that could have occurred during the 1864-65 period of the war. “Basically, this will be a battle you could’ve seen, but didn’t necessarily happen,” said Matthew. This year, the event will feature “extensive camp life portrayals,” said Matthew. Spectators will be able to walk through camps designed to look like what would would have been seen during the Civil War. “It’s really the most important part of the war because the battles were very short,” explained Matthew. “Life was still life and you had to live every day in between battles.” The weekend’s activities will be-

On Sunday, camps will reopen at 9 a.m. with cannon demonstrations

at 10 a.m. The final battle will take place at 1 p.m., with the event wrapping up at 2 p.m. The Clinton County Historical Museum will also open its doors this weekend to display an exhibit about the North Country connection to the Civil War, created by Matthew Hewson and author Vicki Evans

A story time for the ages By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com MOOERS — Many local libraries take part in children’s story time — to encourage younger generations to read. However, one library is extending story time to a larger age group. The Friends of the Mooers Library will

have Intergenerational Story Time at the Watson Memorial Senior Housing, 2448 U.S. Route 11, next Saturday, May 22, at 1:30 p.m. “Our focus was to try to involve more of the community,” explained Friends member Tracy Myers. “Since we have the senior housing center ... and they have a large central room, we decided that would kind of take the library to them.” Myers said one of the main goals was to encourage younger children and their parents to attend the story time to get into an active discussion with the seniors. “We have a selection of books,” Myers said. “Some that we consider kind of like classics that some of the seniors may have actually read to their children or grandchildren.”

Some of the classics include “Good Night Moon,” “Stone Soup,” and “Curious George.” The Friends will also bring contemporary story books as a way to generate conversation, including “The Principal’s New Clothes,” and “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.” Myers said she will introduce a book, with the hopes of stimulating conversation. “If nothing seems to be happening then I’ll start reading the books,” she said. “I’m go-

ing to be asking questions throughout, trying to get seniors to maybe share stories that they can remember and usually kids like to speak up.” For more information about the Intergenerational Story Time, contact the Mooers Free Library at 236-7744. “Come meet the seniors that are living right here in your community,” Myers said. “Learn something or share the past of memories.”

Orchard, are among those that return to the event year after year, joining businesses new to the expo like Wooden Ski and Wheel, WELCare Family and Sports Chiropractic, Off the Field Sports and Greer Cicarelli Photography, among others. “There is no other time of year you’re going to have this many businesspeople under one roof for one day,” said Parks. “[The expo] includes just about everything you can possibly imagine.” The expo has come a long way from when it was started, said Parks, then only hosting about 25 booths. That number has more than quadrupled in size and is something Parks attributes to how people have come to value it as “one of the greatest networking opportunities in the area.” “Every year it got a little bit bigger and a little bit better and here we are today, 22 years later, with 186 booths on the floor,” said Parks. “It’s something people look forward to every year.” One of the fundamental objectives of the expo is to encourage people to do business at the local level and meet the people they do business with face to face, said Parks. “As you walk through the show, you’re going to find things you didn’t even know we offered here in Plattsburgh,” said Parks. “It’s nice to see what these companies have and what they do so you kind of remember what they’re all about ... It’s good to know what’s going on in our community.” And, just because it’s called a “business” expo, don’t let the name fool you. There’s much fun to be had at the event, said Parks. “Some businesses will do a giveaway for the day ... others like WIRY do giveaways all day long,” said Parks. “They’re making it fun for people. They realize the expo is a good place to share information, but it’s also a good place to just to make contact with people and to have a good time.” Parks recommends, if attending the show, to set aside at least a couple hours, if possible. “It does take a while to get through the whole show,” said Parks. “There’s lots to see and lots to do and many, many people to talk to.” The expo will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with admission $3 per person. An after-party will be held at the Naked Turtle on Dock Street. Free coffee will be offered all day at the expo, courtesy of La Quinta Inn and Suites and Glens Falls National Bank. The event is sponsored by TwinState Voice.Data.Video Inc., WPTZ Newschannel 5, AT&T, Curtis Lumber, Buck Supply and Distribution, and Denton Publications. There are currently a few booths available, measuring 8 ft. by 10 ft., at a cost of $395 for chamber members and $495 for nonmembers. “When the booths are gone, they’re gone, so I would say call as soon as you can if you’re interested,” said Parks. Student’s passion for archery on target By Michael O’Keefe Special to Denton Publications BEEKMANTOWN — Baseball, football, soccer, track and … archery? Although it may not be the most common high-school sport to play, Brandon Bessette-Agnew could show anybody good reason to become an archer. The Beekmantown High School student has been practicing archery for a few years now, but has recently gained national attention for his skills. Bessette-Agnew is now the New York State indoor champ for the male compound bow in the age 1317 class and also recently took the New Eastern Regional Championship. He stands sixth in the country in indoor target shooting and 10th in the country for outdoor, in his division.

more than his entire time arching. “It’s a very tight-knit community,” he said. Archery’s tightly-knit community is not made up of larger than life super-athletes, said Brandon. On the contrary — archery itself is a very accessible sport to those who have disabilities, or are those who are not born with that certain athletic edge that other sports require. “It’s great for kids with disabilities,” Brandon said. “Or even for kids like me who aren’t athletic.” Brandon himself is involved with a youth archery training program. The young prodigy has plans for the future, and his love for the sport is clearly not fading away any time soon. “I feel great about it,” he said. “It’s definitely something I want to do through college.” Michael O’Keefe is an intern with the State University of New York at Plattsburgh.

“It was kind of a fluke thing,” he said about picking up the sport. His father ’s old bow was given to him for a birthday present when his father bought an upgrade. That’s all it took to set a champion on a course to success. “It was a hobby at first,” Brandon said. “I picked up the mechanics and form really well.” Although he may have been a natural, Brandon said the accessibility of archery is what attracts him to the sports. “I think some of the nicest people in the world do archery,” Brandon said. “You can’t be an amateur baseball player and play with Derek Jeter,” he said. “ I shot with the U.S. Olympic team, and an eight-time world champion was standing next to me shooting at nationals.” Brandon said he was able to have a short conversation with the worldclass athlete, in which he learned

12 - North Countryman said Kathy. “Our main objective for [the after-prom party] is for kids to have fun and be safe.” The committee has been planning the event since October, reaching out to local merchants and community members for financial support to host the party, said Kathy. The response has been “amazing,” she said, with more than $9,500 raised through donations and fundraisers. In addition, several items have been donated to be given as prizes to attract students to the party, added Kathy. “It’s just amazing to see this community give, give give,” she said. A flat-screen television, camera, Netbook, jewelry, ski passes and greens fees are among the prizes to be awarded to lucky juniors throughout the night. But, perhaps the most sought-after prize will be a 2002 Chevy Prism donated by Parker Chevrolet Pontiac Inc. of Champlain. “Tim Parker was above and beyond helpful,” said Kathy, referring to the donation. “He told us he would not give us a car that he would

NCCS giving away car for junior prom By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com CHAMPLAIN — The plan is simple — keep students safe after prom. Kathy Ryan and her daughter, Colleen, are among those working on a committee that’s organizing the first after-prom party for Northeastern Clinton Central School. The event will be hosted at the school following this Saturday’s prom at the Rainbow Wedding and Banquet Hall in Altona, offering a safe alternative for students wanting to celebrate one of their high school milestones. “As parents, we know the dangers of our kids being out on prom night,”

not feel was safe enough to put his own daughter in. So, we know it’s a good car.” “And, here it sits, thanks to their generosity,” she added. Prizes won’t be the only draw, said Kathy. Entertainment will be a big part of the night, with a hypnotist and past American Idol participant Benjamin Bright being among the acts to round out the event. Free henna tattoos, a photo booth and movies are among the other activities that have been piquing student interest. “I know there are kids who do like to go out and drink,” said Colleen, “so, we wanted to do what we could to pull in as many groups as possible. There were some who said they’d never go to an after-prom party. Those kids are going now.” The only hook to winning prizes is that students can’t leave once they’re at the party, unless their parents pick them up or prior arrangements are made. Transportation from the prom to the party will also be offered. “We just want the kids to get home safe,” said Kathy.

Teddy bear drive to teach leadership By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com

Just for Frankie More than 350 people participated in the first 5-kilometer run/walk in memory of Frankie Garrow — an 18-year-old who died in a car accident in January — at the Chazy Recreation Park May 8. Many were seen at the event wearing Tshirts with the drama club symbol, which Frankie was involved with at Chazy Central Rural School. Nearly $5,500 was raised for a scholarship in Frankie’s name, with more donations still coming in. Photo bySarah L. Cronk

CHAMPLAIN — Teaching leadership skills is one of the goals for the Girl Scouts. One local troop has come up with a unique way to put these skills to use, as well as helping the community. On Wednesday, May 19, the Northeastern Clinton Girl Scout Brownie Troop 4027, based in Champlain, will be at the Champlain Volunteer Fire Department, 162 Elm St., from 5:307:30 p.m., collecting new and gently used teddy bears and stuffed animals. “We’re accepting all kinds of stuffed animals,” said troop leader Kenna Dumas. “It can be anything.” The idea for the teddy bear/stuffed animal drive came when Dumas found out the Champlain Rescue Squad has three ambulances with stuffed animals to give to children during emergency situations. “It usually calms [children] down,” explained assistant captain Cory Thompson. “They might have a favorite blanket or a favorite toy and as they’re being whisked off in the am-

bulance, you tend to forget those things.” Thompson said many children can be nervous in the ambulance but when they receive a stuffed animal “they see we’re on their side, there’s nothing to be afraid of.” Dumas said when her troop was discussing ways to help the community, many of the children “wanted to do [the drive] to make other kids happy and ... help them not to be scared.” The drive is part of a new program the Brownie troop is working on called “Journeys,” where they earn “keys” by completing steps of the program. The first key — the Discover Key — is when the girls learn more about themselves. “Their qualities and their values and what they can contribute as being themselves,” Dumas explained. The second key — the Connect Key — is when they work with their family. “They lead their family in a healthy-living activity kind of thing,” Dumas said. The third key — the Take Action Key — is what the girls will accom-

plish with the drive. “[They had to] find something in the community that needed fixing or attention or something they could do just to make the community better,” Dumas explained. “They think of the idea, they make the decision, they plan how they’re going to do it, and then of course [May 19] will be the actual ‘taking action.’” She said she hopes the community will contribute to the cause to help the girls complete their goal and help other children. “It will help them see what they’re doing to help make a difference in the community,” Dumas said. “It will help the children that actually need them.” “It’s a good way to help two community associations,” said Thompson. “[The Girl Scouts are] doing a great thing for us and in turn we get to give back their contributions and their donations back to the community. It’s kind of friends helping friends, neighbors helping neighbors.” If unable to bring a donation the day of the event, contact co-leader Debbie Jolicoeur at 298-4611.

In the event the successful bidder is the previous owner, the purchase price cannot be less than the total amount of taxes owed at the time Clinton County took title to the parcel. 9. Clinton County will notify purchaser when all required documents necessary to complete the sale and transfer of any and all parcels purchased at the auction have been prepared. Within 30 days of such notification, the entire balance of the purchase price, plus the buyer’s premium and closing costs/fees shall be paid. Credit card payment is NOT acceptable for balance due. All payments must be made by cash, money order or bank check. 10. Conveyance shall be by quitclaim deed only, containing a description of the property as it appeared on the tax roll for the year upon which the County acquired title. The deed will be recorded by the County upon payment in full of the purchase price, buyer’s premium, and closing fees/costs. POSSESSION OF THE PROPERTY IS FORBIDDEN UNTIL THE DEED IS RECORDED WITH THE CLINTON COUNTY CLERK CONVEYING TITLE TO THE PURCHASER. TITLE VESTS AT THE RECORDING OF THE DEED. It is agreed between the County and the Purchaser that delivery and acceptance of the deed occurs upon recording of the deed. 11. The closing fees/costs which the purchaser shall be required to pay shall consist of: (1) New York State Transfer Tax [$2.00 for each $500.00 of the purchase/bid price]; (2) Filing Fee for the Real Property Transfer Report [$125.00 if the parcels classification code is 100-199, 200-299 or 411-C; $250.00 for all parcels otherwise classified]; (3) filing fee for Combined Gains Tax-Transfer Tax Affidavit [$5.00]; and (4) all other fees and surcharges required by the Clinton County Clerk for recording of the deed. 12. outstanding school and village taxes, past due and present water and sewer rents, assessments, and any demolition or “cleanup” charges, without proration whatsoever. 13. All purchasers are advised to personally inspect the premises and to examine title to premises prior to the date upon which the sale is scheduled to take place. Personal inspection must be coordinated through Haroff Auction & Realty, Inc. and Absolute Auctions & Realty, Inc; entrance upon any parcel without an employee of Haroff Auction & Realty, Inc. or Absolute Auctions & Realty, Inc. constitutes trespass pursuant to the laws of New York State. 14. Notice is hereby given that the premises being sold may lie within an Agricultural District as designated upon the tax map. It is the sole responsibility of any bidder to ascertain which specific parcel(s) is so designated and these are sold subject to the provisions of law applicable thereto. 15. No personal property is included in the sale of any of the parcels owned by Clinton County. The disposition of any personal property located on any parcel sold shall be the sole responsibility of the successful purchaser following the closing of sale. 16. Evictions, if necessary, are solely the responsibility of the successful bidder after closing and recording of the deed. 17. Clinton County acquired title to these properties in accordance with Article 11, as the case may be, of the Real Property Tax Law of the State of New York, and all known rights of redemption under said provisions of law have been extinguished by the tax sale proceeding; and/or as a result of forfeiture. 18. The purchaser shall be solely responsible for the payment of all taxes levied against the property subsequent to transfer of title to Clinton County. 19. Real Property Tax Law authorizes the imposition of a pro-rata liability on formerly exempt property transferred to a non-exempt owner after taxable status date. The property purchased at the tax foreclosure is exempt at the time of purchase (county-owned). Upon transfer of title, the exemption ceases, and each tax levying unit, county, town and village are due taxes for the remaining portion of the year. On a subsequent tax roll, county/town, the purchaser of the property will receive an additional bill for these taxes. This entire process is subject to administrative review. Further information can be found in New York Real Property Tax Law, Sections 520, 551 and 553. 20. NO PERSON OR ORGANIZATION CAN BID ON PROPERTIES AT THE AUCTION IF THEY, OR A CORPORATION OR COMPANY THEY ARE AFFILIATED WITH, OWE PROPERTY TAXES (CURRENT YEAR OR PRIOR YEAR) TO CLINTON COUNTY. ALL TAX LIABILITIES MUST BE PAID PRIOR TO THE AUCTION IN ORDER TO BID AT THE AUCTION. Failure to comply with this provision will be grounds for default and forfeiture of any deposits paid.

21. By acknowledging and executing these Terms & Conditions, the purchaser certifies that he/she is not representing or acting as proxy for the former owner(s) of the property against whom Clinton County foreclosed, or anyone previously prohibited from participation in auctions, and has no intent to defraud Clinton County of the unpaid taxes, assessment, penalties and charges which have been levied against the property. The purchaser agrees that neither he/she nor his/her assigns shall convey the property to the former owner(s) against whom Clinton County foreclosed within 24 months subsequent to the auction date and, if such conveyance occurs, the purchaser understands that he/she may be found to have committed a fraud and/or intent to defraud and will be liable for any deficiency between the purchase price at the auction and such sums as may be owed to Clinton County as related to the foreclosure on the property and consents to immediate judgment by Clinton County for said amounts. 22. All sales shall be final, absolute and without recourse, and in no event shall Clinton County, Haroff Auction & Realty, Inc., and Absolute Auctions & Realty, Inc., be or become liable for any defects in title for any cause whatsoever, and no claim, demand or suit of any nature shall exist in favor of the purchaser, its heirs, successors or assigns, against Clinton County, Haroff Auction & Realty, Inc., and Absolute Auctions & Realty, Inc., arising from this sale. 23. In the event that a sale is cancelled by Court Order or judgment or by the Clinton County Legislature, the successful bidder shall be entitled only to a refund of the purchase money. Purchaser shall not be entitled to special or consequential damages, nor attorney fees, nor reimbursement for any expenses incurred as a result of ownership or improvements of the property nor for taxes paid during the period of ownership. 24. The auctioneer’s decision regarding any disputes is final, and the auctioneer reserves the right to reject any bid that is not an appreciable advancement over the preceding bid. 25. Anyone deemed by the Auctioneer to be intentionally obstructing the business of the auction may be ordered removed by the Auctioneer. 26. All informational tools, such as slides, tax maps, photos, auction listings, auction catalogs, auction signs, property record cards, etc. are for identification purposes only and are neither a guarantee nor a warranty as to location, dimensions, parcel use and/or size, or anything else. THE COUNTY, HAROFF AUCTION & REALTY, INC. AND ABSOLUTE AUCTIONS & REALTY, INC. MAKE NO WARRANTY, EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, IN CONNECTION WITH THIS SALE. 27. The successful purchaser on each auction parcel must remove the auction sign within two (2) days of receipt of the deed to the parcel as provided for herein.
