Fun Run/Walk series gearing up, families encouraged to join By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com

CADYVILLE — When looking for a fun family activity to take part in this summer, the Town of Plattsburgh Recreation Department wants you to look no further than the Cadyville Recreation Park. An estimated six years ago, CVPH Medical Center began hosting fun runs at the Plattsburgh State Field House to promote heart health, through their HeartSmart program. Four years ago, when the program was in need of a new course, the recreation department stepped up.

Tekkie Fathers Day gifts Insomnia and caregiving

W

hat are you getting dear old dad this year for Father's Day? If dad travels a lot, perhaps a GPS unit could be a good choice. There are many different kinds including apps for smart phones along with dedicated devices and socalled “connected” devices. GPS via smart phone is simple; users must already have the smart phone and need only download the app. Many smart phones have a number of apps available with some offering hands-free, voice navigation. The good thing about smart phone based GPS is people usually always have their phone. A bad thing is having the screen constantly on will drain the battery more quickly. Dedicated devices are the ones most people think of when someone mentions GPS. They work very well having intuitive, larger interfaces but they also cost more than just a smart phone app. Many dedicated devices are updated in two main steps. Updates are downloaded to a PC and then transferred to the device. That’s more work than downloading an

app but, the reality is, the unit may need to only be updated once or twice during its life time depending on the travel habits of the user. Dedicated devices have come down in price considerably in the last few years. I recently bought one for under a hundred bucks. Connected devices are just like a dedicated device except they offer By Ron Poland more information for the user. Where dedicated devices only receive data, connected devices can initiate data requests. That makes reports for weather, traffic, fuel prices, etc. instantly available. More sophisticated ones can pull up flight information, movie times, and perform Google searches for nearby points of interest. The biggest drawback for connected devices is the cost, which is more initially and typically requires a monthly subscription of $10 to $15.

any seniors suffer from sleep disorders, or insomnia, according to Caregiver.com. It is estimated that as many as 30 percent of the elderly population experience apnea, disrupted sleep patterns, and early waking. If insomnia continues for too long, seniors may become depressed and their general health may suffer. Insomnia has many causes, including chronic pain, anxiety, medications, and lifestyle changes. Caregivers may need to consider a number of approaches to the insomnia problem: • Check to see if any medications list “difficulty falling asleep” as a side effect. If so, discuss with your loved one’s health care professional whether another medication can be substituted. • Limit eating and drinking before bedtime, so that bathroom trips will be less frequent. • Try to maintain a routine: get up at the same time every day and go to bed at the same time every evening. • Limit caffeine intake in the afternoon or evening. • Limit or eliminate smoking, which can cause sleep-disrupting breathing problems. • Try to incorporate regular exercise into

their routine- even a short daily walk can improve sleep patterns. • Some seniors find television too upsetting- encourage them to read a book to relax before bed. • Turn off the phone in their room and keep the room dark. • Try not to get upset or agitated when sleep disruptions occur- this may exacerbate the problem. • Try to create a stress-free environment before bedtimeengage in pleasant conversations involving happy topics. • Treat the sleep-disorder solution as a team effort. Encourage their input and opinions. • Resist the urge to use over-the-counter sleep aids. These may provide temporary relief but when used for too long, the body will build a resistance to them. What exactly is a leek moth? May’s Basket highest ever

L

ast summer, a Plattsburgh home gardener contacted Cornell Cooperative Extension regarding an insect problem in garlic. Surprisingly, the insect was identified by the USDA as leek moth (Acrolepiopsis assectella). This is the first report of this insect in the continental United States. Since the first report of leek moth, this pest has been reported in several other Plattsburgh area gardens both last year and this year. While most insects stay away from onions and garlic, leek moth is a known pest of all Allium crops, including leek, onion, chives, green onion, shallot, garlic, elephant garlic, etc. and is considered a serious pest of these crops. The leek moth is native to Europe but can now be found in Asia, Africa, and North America. The first North American find of leek moth occurred in 1993 in Ontario Canada. While leeks are the preferred host, all Allium crops will be attacked. The larvae (or caterpillars) cause significant damage to onions by tunneling mines into the leaf tissue causing distortion, stunted growth, and secondary bacterial and fungal infections. While most of the feeding occurs in the leaves, feeding occasionally occurs in the bulbs. Flowers are avoided since Allium flowers contain saponin, a compound that inhibits the growth of insects. The adults moths are small ( approximately 1/2 inch wingspan; 1/4 inch long with wings folded at rest) reddish-brown moths with a

white triangular mark on the middle of their folded wings. The hindwings of the moths are heavily fringed and are pale to dark grey in color. Adults are active at nightfall and right before dawn. Eggs are laid in the spring on leaf surfaces. The small yellowish-green caterpillars eat any cultivated onion-type plant prior to pupating in a reddishbrown netted cocoon. Most cocoons are found on the leaves but they can also be found on decaying plant matter near the crops. If you grow any of the listed Alliums in your garden, inspect them for damage. Look for mined holes and windows in the leaves, small caterpillars, the caterpillars droppings (frass), cocoons, or adult moths. If you suspect leek moth damage, it is probably best to destroy the plants. It is hard to use pesticides on these insects since they are often found inside the plant. If you do not have damage, a simple row cover can prevent infestation. Infected plants can be harvested and eaten but any portion of the plant not eaten must be burned or bagged and sent to the landfill in order to prevent the spread of this non native insect. Anne Lenox Barlow has had experience in the agricultural field as a horticulture educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension in Clinton County. She can be reached by e-mail at a.lennox.barlow@gmail.com.

onsumers may have experienced some sticker shock in May at the grocery store. After holding stable for several months, prices jumped 4 percent overall from April, with a 12 percent increase in produce and a 10 percent increase in meats leading the way. For the year these category totals are up 7 percent and 18 percent respectively. The cost of the 41 items in May came in at $95.81, up from $91.70 in April, and also up from last May's cost of $91.68. In the produce aisle the cost of Dole bananas and potatoes were up sharply. The largest increase was on a pound of yellow onions, however, which nearly doubled in price and is up 72 percent from May 2009. Shoppers found some relief in the frozen food cases, with lower prices on all items except chopped spinach. Canned goods were also slightly lower in price, with Starkist chunk tuna at a low average price of 99 cents for a 6.5-ounce can. Green Giant canned peas were up 8 percent for the month and 10 percent for the year. Meat prices were up on every item priced, with the largest increases for the month on sirloin steak and bottom round roast. For the year center cut pork chops are up 32 percent. Despite another 30 cent drop on the cost of a pound of River rice, the overall price

Church to honor Father Gordon Sunday By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com CHAZY — After 45 years as a Catholic priest, the Rev. L. William Gordon of Sacred Heart Parish is retiring. This Sunday, June 20, will be the final Mass Gordon will be performing and choir director Joey Trombley feels this is the time for a celebration. The Mass will begin at its usual time of 10 a.m., however Trombley is hoping people will come out at 9:30 a.m. for a special concert honoring Gordon. “At Christmas Eve Mass ... we’ve done a half hour of carols before Mass starts,” Trombley explained. “So, I thought, ‘Why not do it for his last Mass?’” Trombley said Gordon has been at Sacred Heart Parish for more than a decade. “Come in and show support for the appreciation we have for Father and his spiritual guidance for the

past 12 years,” he said. During the concert, to make it more even more meaningful for Gordon, Trombley invited harpist and pianist Bill Tisdale and trombonist Lori Salimando-Porter to assist in the musical display. “I wanted to tie in other musicians that have played for him in church through the years,” Trombley explained. “We wanted to have a special [concert] playing some of his favorite music, a half hour before Mass starts.” “It’s going to be pretty nice,” he added. During the concert, the Sacred Heart choir will be performing some of Gordon’s favorite songs, including “Only This I Want,” “Taste and See,” and “Pesca de Hombre” — a song Gordon personally requested. The musicians will also assist the choir during songs played throughout the regular Mass. At the conclusion of Mass, there will be a luncheon at the parish hall.

of the breads, cereals and grains category was up 4 percent over April. This was mostly due to a 13 percent increase on five pounds of sugar. In the miscellaneous category Oreo cookie prices were stable and vegetable oil prices were slightly lower. Dairy prices continued their slow climb overall, but a dozen large eggs was 27 cents less than in April. One pound of store brand butter was up 14 percent to an average price of $2.15.

Seasonal reminder Asparagus and rhubarb are ripening in local gardens. Strawberry picking has begun. The citrus season is over, but lemons and limes are still in season. Bing cherries, mangos, and pineapple are in season, but expensive! The Market Basket Report is a bi-monthly survey of 41 food items commonly purchased by consumers. A family fish tale

A

s most readers of this column probably know, I have an affinity for getting kids involved in the outdoors. It is especially important in these times, when the allure of electronic entertainment is far greater than the allure of lures. I firmly believe the best method for treating an electronic addiction is to put a fishing rod in a kid’s hand. A fishing rod is the ultimate Xbox detox tool. The reality of a fish fighting at the end of a line, trumps the virtual reality of Space Invaders every time. Recently, while searching for topic for a Father ’s Day article, I received an unsolicited email from a source that I didn’t recognize. Usually, I simply delete such messages as junk mail. However, the email was captioned: “Our daughter ’s big fish.” It piqued my curiosity. I opened it and saw pictures of a man hefting a large lake trout and a young lady standing next to him, beaming from ear to ear. The note read: “I wanted to share this picture of our daughter Caitlin Keysor and her big catch. Caitlin is 15 and loves to go fishing with her dad, Dale. This fish was caught on June 3, 2010. The lake trout was caught in

a "Secret" Adirondack lake and was 12 pounds and 29 inches long! She chose her lure, casted, hooked, reeled it to the boat and dad helped her net it and pull it into the boat! She is very proud of her trophy! I hope that you enjoy these pictures!, Lynn Bushey.” Now, I know there are a lot of parents that fish with their kids. And I know that many families have shared some fantastic catches. However, I figured that the photo, which was obviously taken at night, likely had an interesting back-story. So, I contacted Lynn Bushey. As luck would have it, Lynn, originally from Saranac Lake, was scheduled to be in town for a relative’s birthday party over the weekend and agreed to meet with me later that day. Dale Keyor, a contractor by trade, explained, “We usually try to get out at least once a week. As you can imagine, fishing has become a pretty popular pursuit in our family. And we often come home late.” Lynn agreed. “Caitlin’s determination has really got him more into it!” Caitlin is a special young lady. She has survived a very traumatic car accident at a young age and despite a long process of rehabilitation, she is currently a freshman at Saranac Central School. When I asked about her fishing adventures, Caitlin explained, “I live fishing! It’s awesome. I caught my first fish when we

were camping at Buck Pond when I was four years old.” Lynn added, “ Ever since then, she’d rather be outdoors than indoors.” When I asked where she caught the big laker, like a veteran angler, Caitlin wouldn’t give up the location. She responded simply, “In a secret Adirondack pond.” Her father detailed the event. “I got home from work and called my buddy, who didn’t want to go. So I hooked up the boat and Caitlin made the choice of location. She also chose the lure, and cast it herself. I looked up and her pole was just crippled right over!“ “She hooked into it and fought it for a while before she got it to the boat. I saw it and slipped a net under, and when I hauled it out, the lure popped right out of it’s mouth.” “It was awesome”, Caitlin chimed in. “I used my favorite lure, and I call it the Scarface lure. He (dad) doesn’t have the luck I have.” It’s a wonderful story, but even more telling is Caitlin’s enthusiasm for the outdoor life. She is a Girl Scout, who loves biking, hiking, snowmobiling and driving a four wheeler and explained that she would “rather be outdoors than anywhere!” We need more kids like her!

Preventing dog bites

undreds of dog bites are reported to Clinton County Health Department every year. Most of them are preventable. What are some of the reasons why dogs attack? · Protecting their puppies, territory, or family members · Feeling threatened by you · In pain, injured or ill · Surprised by your sudden appearance · Bothered while eating · Frustrated from being chained or tied · Excited, nervous or “playing”

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Summer has arrived and with that more people are out and about, along with their dogs. For the last decade, the Clinton County Health Department has been working to educate youth on the proper ways to safely approach dogs and prevent bites. “Children sometimes are somewhat aggressive when they approach,” explained CCHD public information officer Laurie Williams. “Dogs are kid-magnets is what we always say.” The CCHD and the Foundation of CVPH provide videos to teachers on how best to teach children, specifically ages 5-9, how to safely be around dogs. “We want to remind them, you ask permission when you approach a dog, whether you know the dog or not,” Williams explained. “You need to let them smell your hand first. All those basic little things.” Since beginning the training, both Williams and senior public health sanitari-

an Rita Mitchell have noticed a decline in the number of bites. “We’ll never get to zero, but we’re lower and we think it’s because we’ve had this sustained outreach in the community every spring,” said Williams. However, despite declining numbers, Mitchell said they still receive notice of severe dog bites in Clinton County every day. “People don’t realize ... all dog bites that are treated get reported to us and we follow up to insure that the dog is up to speed on vaccinations. That there’s been proper medical care,” Williams explained.

Mitchell said the education provided to prevent dog bites isn’t just for young children either. “We try to educate the owners, too, on how to make sure their dog is properly socialized with people,” she said. “That they don’t keep an aggressive dog ... So, it grows up as a safe, family pet.” Some of the ways Mitchell suggests people can make their dog less aggressive is by getting them accustomed to children as a puppy, and have them neutered. “A dog has the potential to really do some massive damage to your hands or your face

particularly,” Mitchell said. “We’re trying to prevent that injury from happening, because they can be lifetime disfigurement or disability.” Mitchell and Williams also said dogs who cause bites can be of all sizes and breeds. “There are certain breeds that have more of the propensity for aggression,” Williams said, “but, with proper training, they can all be good pets.” For more information about dog bite prevention, and about the CCHD rabies clinics, visit www.clintonhealth.org or call 5654870.

Obituaries Charles C. Ashline April 27, 1927 - June 8, 2010

Looking at the past The Babbie Rural and Farm Learning Museum, 250 River Road, Peru, opened its doors with an official ribbon-cutting last weekend. Hundreds perused — and touched— the interactive displays, which give a glimpse at how farming life once was in the North Country. Here, Megan Taptick, a native of Peru, returned for the event from Rutland, Vt., with her daughter, Brooke. Taptick said she thought it was “great for Peru to have something like this for families who are looking for something to do.” The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call 643-8052 or 569-8715. Fun Runs From page 1 “They needed a new home, so we took them on,” explained Melanie Defayette, the department’s director. The Family Fun Run/Walk series will begin next Wednesday, June 23, and will be held every Wednesday for the following eight weeks. For children age 3 and younger, there will be a quarter-mile run/walk, beginning at 6 p.m. At 6:10 p.m., there will be a half-mile run/walk for children age 4-6. At 6:15 p.m., there will be a 1-mile

run/walk for children age 7-10 and 11-14. Adults may also walk in this race. The final race, held at 6:30 p.m. will be an open 5-kilometer run. Over the years, Defayette has seem the number of participants grow, with last year averaging 100 runners and walkers weekly. “It’s run so smoothly,” Defayette said. “Jim [Medeiros] does a wonderful job. He runs the thing like a clock.” Defayette said Medeiros, one of the organizers of the fun run, is always able to complete the event within an hour. “[Participants] enjoy it because they know they’re going to shape

up, they’re going to do their thing,” she said. Defayette added people enjoy the fun runs because it’s a way for them to enjoy a family activity without any competition. “People do this just for their own times. They like to see themselves improve,” she said. The races will be held rain or shine, and people who compete in at least five out of the eight weeks will receive a free T-shirt. “Just come out, enjoy the park, enjoy the fresh air,” Defayette said. For more information, call the recreation department at 562-6860, or Medeiros at 293-8540.
