Apple’s increasing success Chronic pain and sleep loss

L

ast May, a major shift occurred that many thought would never happen. Technology headlines around the globe proclaimed Apple is now worth more than Microsoft. Surprised? While Macs still account for less than one out of 10 PCs sold, Apple’s other product lines have shot up in areas beyond the personal computer driving the value of Apple as a whole past Microsoft by a paltry couple billion dollars. That is quite remarkable for Apple when considering in the late ‘90s Michael Dell suggested Apple cease operations, close shop and return whatever they can to investors. At that point, Dell was growing like gang-busters and Apple had almost nothing. With some great ideas and even better marketing efforts, they soon did and the amazing run of products like OSX, the iPod, iPhone and currently the iPad have put Apple solidly out in front. Today, Dell Computer is worth about one-tenth of Apple. What does the future hold? Steve Jobs expressed his views during the All Things Digital conference in June. He talked about reaching the beginning of the post-PC era,

how computers have taken us a long way, and how the transition away from computers may be lengthy and uncomfortable for some people. In detailing his concept of the post-PC era, Jobs offered the analogy of America’s period as an agrarian nation when all motorized vehicles were trucks. When the masses gravitated toward urban centers trucks were replaced By Ron Poland by cars. Jobs thinks personal computers will slowly undergo the same fate as early trucks. That less people will use them as they migrate to other devices. Jobs has a solid argument as handheld devices are more powerful than ever and are quickly becoming the go-to device for many people; a trend that will likely continue.

f the person in your care is having difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, one possible explanation could be chronic pain. More than 50 percent of older Americans experience some form of chronic pain, impacting the quality of their sleep. The following are tips to help address chronic pain/sleep loss concerns: The quality of sleep is more important than the quantity. Even if the person in your care is spending 6 hours in bed, they may still not be getting the necessary rest. Additionally, chronic pain may cause them to be restless and may contribute to wandering activities. Inspect their mattress. A worn mattress may be contributed to neck or back pain. Also, as our bodies’ age, our mattress preferences change. A softer type of mattress that was preferred years ago may no longer fit with the care receiver ’s needs. Take a look at their lifestyle. Do they practice healthy habits? Do they eat nutritious foods and exercise regularly? Caregivers may want to speak with their loved one’s health care professional about incorporating exercising and stretching into the daily routine. Appropriate exercise can have

many benefits, including alleviating pain and improving sleep. Examine their medications, both prescription and over-the-counter. Some pain medications can disrupt sleeping patterns or cause insomnia. Monitor or discontinue caffeine intake. This may take a few days to get used to but will greatly benefit quality of sleep. The same can be said of alcohol. Some folks think alcohol helps them sleep, but the opposite is true- alcohol can effect sleep cycles and prevent deep, restful sleep. Cut back on daily naps, if they seem to be affecting nighttime sleep habits. Discuss any sleep and chronic pain problems with the care receiver ’s heath care professional.

More on fungus among us A

few weeks, I wrote about mushrooms in the lawn. The lawn is not the only portion of our landscape where fungi occur. Landscape mulches are often home to several different types of fungi and for the most part, they are harmless. Landscape mulches are used to protect soil, conserve moisture, moderate soil temperature, and limit weed growth, as well as beautify and unify landscape plantings. Most mulches are mixtures of shredded wood and bark residues from lumber and paper mills, arboricultural and landclearing operations, and wooden pallet disposal or recycling facilities. Like other organic matter, wood and bark decompose over time. The primary organisms involved with their decomposition are bacteria and fungi. Bacteria are microscopic organisms that are not visible in the mulch. Fungi also may be microscopic, but many develop visible reproductive structures. The fungi involved in the decomposition of landscape mulches are natural components of the environment. The most frequent types of fungi found in wood mulches include various mushrooms, slime molds, bird’s nest fungus, and artillery fungus. These fungi are not harmful to landscape plants and no known health hazards are associated with them unless they are eaten. They can be found April through October, usually following rainy weather.

Bird’s nest fungus has a fruiting structure that looks like a miniature bird’s nest with tiny eggs. The eggs are actually the fungi’s spores. This fungus is harmless and does not have to be removed. Another harmless mulch fungus is the slime mold. These are the fungi that appear during damp conditions that look like the neighbor ’s dog brought up last night’s dinner onto your mulch. While this fungus may look disgusting, it feeds off of bacteria in the mulch and is harmless. The one fungus you will want to remove is artillery fungus. These resemble tiny cups with one black egg. The “egg” is the spores. Eventually, the fungus shoots this sticky spore “egg” into the air. If the spore mass lands on siding or a car, the sticky black mass is almost impossible to remove. If you happen to remove it, it leaves a brown mark. If you are having issues with artillery fungus, it is best to replace the wood mulch with an inorganic mulch, such a rubber or stone. Otherwise, you will have to keep an eye out for the fruiting, or sporing, structures and try to remove them prior to them releasing their spores. he North Country Chapter American Red Cross held its 94th Volunteer Recognition in June. The Volunteer of the year was Susan Minnie. Susan volunteers in the office and also in the Lifeline Program. There are two services that every Red Cross Chapter provides — Disaster Response 24/7 is one. In the past year we have assisted 37 families recover after a fire. We provide emergency food, shelter and clothing — other needs are met if resources are not available. Armed Forces Emergency Services is the second. The Red Cross is the only organization recognized by the military to verify an emergency for an enlisted person or their family. Staff and Volunteers verify these family emergencies and using the Red Cross messaging center verification is provided to the military. There is a Red Cross office on every U.S. military installation. We provided 68 messages in the past year

ARC looking to branch out ‘Giving Tree’ By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Money may not grow on trees, but donations can get your name on one. The Advocacy and Resource Center of Clinton County recently unveiled its latest fundraising campaign known as “The Giving Tree.” The tree is a hand-carved creation by KC VanRijn-Reiter of Morrisonville, which features leaves of different alloys for various levels of individual charitable giving. The money to sponsor a leaf goes toward the organization’s services for the developmentally-disabled. “We were thinking about ways to recognize donors and how would we begin working on a planned giving program for the ARC Foundation,” explained ARC executive director Theresa M. Garrow. “The tree was Brenda’s idea,” Garrow continued, referring to ARC public relations director Brenda Garner. “It was similar to something she had done in Massachusetts when doing

some public relations and fundraising for another nonprofit there.” The two-dimensional tree consists of a trunk made from local cedar and 600 leaves made of copper, silver and gold for giving levels of $300, $500 and $1,000, respectively. Once it was created, it was just a matter of where it would be displayed where “a large number of community residents would be able to see it.” “Our administration building has frequent visitors but it’s not like the number of people who attend events at the Westside Ballroom,” said Garrow, who said the latter was the location the committee thought would be “the best venue.” The Giving Tree is also located on a wall in the ballroom across from the foundation’s wall recognizing a list of corporate donors with contributions of $5,000 and more. That wall has received several thousand dollars in donations to date. “We’ve had a lot of very generous individuals giving of their time and their money to the ARC Foundation over many, many years,” said Garrow.

North Countryman - 5

“We are very, very lucky indeed.” The Giving Tree will go even further for those wanting to give more than the amount available to sponsor leaves. “We plan on doing rocks underneath,” added Garrow. “That would be for giving levels of $5,000 for a small rock, $10,000 for a medium and $20,000 for a large rock. Those who participate in the ARC foundation’s annual campaign will also be able to count their dollars toward sponsorship on the tree. “So, another way you can obtain a leaf on the tree would be to have your annual contribution be counted cumulatively,” said Garrow. “We will do that, and as your donations increase, you can start with a copper leaf and end up with a large rock over time.” Those interested in donating toward The Giving Tree may call 5630930 or visit the ARC offices at 231 New York Road. Donations toward the fundraising campaign may also be sent by mail to P.O. Box 1512, Plattsburgh N.Y. 12901.

24/7. As of June 30 — volunteers and staff taught 5,642 individuals how to save a life, learn to swim, be a lifeguard or a good babysitter and more. Red Cross courses are taught at the chapter or in area businesses or organizations. If you are interested in hosting a CPR party in your home, give us a call. The chapter has sponsored the Lifeline Program for 22 years. It provides security and independence for 230 individuals currently. For more information, please call us. The North Country Chapter could not provide all these services if it were not for the local support of this community. If you support us financially or volunteers we appreciate you. The Red Cross Corner is a monthly column provided by the North Country chapter of the American Red Cross. The chapter may be reached at 561-7280 or via e-mail at nccarc@westelcom.com.

t happened to me again. I was attacked and threatened with a disease that can bring the chills, fever, swollen glands, pounding headaches, severe fatigue, a stiff neck, sore back and joint pain including a tingling in the arms and legs. I was lucky. I found the critter crawling on the back of my leg before it had the opportunity to hit pay dirt. The first time I noticed one was when two of my hunting partners found them on their flesh, last season. The little varmints can be found in many grassy, wooded and brushy areas or in stonewalls, woodpiles, tall grass and piles of leaves. They are more common today than ever, in Northern New York. The most severe symptoms of the disease may not appear for weeks, months or even years after the bite. It’s a sneaky little pest that can be picked up simply by walking to the mailbox or mowing the lawn or attending a barb-que. Golfers are attacked as often as anglers or hunters. So are children who play outside, whether in the backyard or at the local ball field. Lyme disease, a bacteria delivered by a tick’s bite, is prevalent across the entire state. In fact, two out of the three counties with the highest incidence of Lyme disease in the entire country, are located in New York. And it appears to be spreading north.

July 31, 2010

In 2008, there were 22 confirmed cases of Lyme disease in Essex County, while only four cases were reported in Franklin County and six in Clinton County. Even with such small numbers, precautions are advised. Hunters, especially those who sit watch on the ground while pursuing deer and turkey, should be extra careful. Anyone traveling, playing or spending time in the outdoors is susceptible to the tick borne disease. All of my brother’s children, who live in the Hudson River Valley community of Red Hook, have had it. The family keeps a ready supply of tick tweezers and medication on hand at all times. “Whenever the kids play outdoors,” my brother explained, “they tuck their pant legs into their socks. Even so, we still have to check them over for ticks as soon as they're back inside. The ticks are real difficult to see. They are about the size of a single piece of pepper.” Lyme disease is caused by the bite of infected deer ticks, which are most active during the spring and early summer, and again in the fall. The best method to combat the affliction is to avoid getting a bite in the first place. This can be accomplished by limiting tick’s access to the skin

by tucking pants into socks, and shirts into pants. When traveling in brushy and grassy areas, wear light-colored clothing, spray repellant around pant and shirt cuffs and always check for ticks after outings. If a tick is found, use tweezers to remove it and check for telltale signs of infection such as rashes. Three out of four victims report a bull’s eyeshaped red rash after being bitten. It can last for several days or weeks. Victims report aches and pain, numbness, fatigue and a stiff neck. Early detection is key! Treatment requires three weeks of a daily dose of antibiotics such as Doxycycline, Amoxicillin or Cefuroxime. Worse-case scenarios require 21-30 days of IV Therapy and hospitalization. Avoidance and protection isn’t always possible, but recognizing the warning signs can help victims to ward off further, more severe complications. Keep a watchful eye to remain ticked off.

They can’t get that kind of individual time to create and to experiment themselves, which this camp totally offered.” The children weren’t the only ones benefitting from Camp Pocket U(topia). According to Andrew, there was also an adult camp, which brought in artists from all around to take part in classes such as sculptural knitting

July 31, 2010 and Japanese marbling. There were also lectures held every evening at Andrew’s home on Pratt Street. “The artists that we’ve brought up from New York City as professional artists, enjoy the experience here in the village,” said Andrew. “The village has been really open and warm … That experience for them makes it so they want to come back again.” Many of the artists who came to the village were also teachers for the kids’ camp. “We don’t have much funding to be able to provide and pay all of our teachers, so a lot of them offered to donate their time,” Andrew said. Andrew is already looking to the future of the camp, by building on what he learned and maybe making it two weeks, instead of one. “It was really great to have the time that we were given,” said Andrew. “Venue is always the most difficult thing.” “The Rouses Point Elementary School principal has been so generous to be able to provide this space for us to be able to create this sort of nucleus creative activity,” he added.

New library hours

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com ROUSES POINT — Champlain Valley Habitat for Humanity can always use more funding, especially since breaking ground on their seventh house. On Wednesday, Aug. 4, there will be a golf tournament at the North Country Golf Club, with a shotgun start at 12 p.m. CVHFH president Harriet Burrell said the idea for the golf tournament actually came from Christopher Welch, the family for whom the seventh CVHFH home is being built. “Our new homeowners that we’re building for in Rouses Point, husband Chris Welch,

works at the golf [course] and knows a great number of the golfers,” Burrell explained. “It was basically the Welches’ idea.” Although proceeds from the fundraiser will help CVHFH in general, as the Welch’s home is the next to be built, most of the proceeds will benefit them. However, the Welches aren’t taking the back seat for this fundraiser. “They’re very busy getting golfers, getting sponsors, helping with the organizing and they’ll be pretty busy the day of the golf tournament,” Burrell said of Laura and Christopher Welch. “And, all these hours work toward their sweat equity.” Sweat equity hours is time

MOOERS — The Mooers Free Library is experimenting with new hours. They are as follows: Tuesday and Wednesday, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Thursday, from 2 to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The public’s input about the hours may be directed to 236-7744.

as well. “Each hole is sponsored by several area businesses and they are donating money to have their money advertised at a hole,” she said. “That’s where the majority of the money is coming from. We’re getting support from a lot of area businesses as well.” The cost for the tournament is $30 for golf club members with their own cart, $40 for members without a cart, and $60 for non-members. The cost includes green fees, a cart and an Italian dinner. “It’s a fun way to support a really good cause,” Burrell said. For more information or to register, call the golf club at 297-2582 or Burrell at 6439770.

The tournament, which is a four-person scramble, will also consist of mulligans, a betting hole, and skins game. The day will also have prizes and contests as well as a 50/50 drawing. Cash prizes will also awarded to those placing in the top three, with the amount depending on the number of participants. “It’s a little daunting to me for the first time,” laughed Burrell. “But, we’re getting great support from the golfers and from the golf club itself.” Burrell added local businesses are stepping up to help

EMTs go paper-free Rescue squad’s record filing now done electronically By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com MORRISONVILLE — When the state recommended ambulance squads consider electronic record filing instead of paper, the Morrisonville Ambulance Service on Banker Road wasted no time. Last December, the squad purchased a Web-based program called emsCharts, which allows the emergency medical technicians to complete their pre-hospital care records in a much simpler and more organized way. “If somebody comes to us for instance and says, ‘Hey, I need a record on such and a such a date at such and such a time,’ what we're able to do is actually go into the computer program itself and find whatever kind of information they want, without having boxes and boxes of paperwork and PCRs to go through,” explained critical care EMT Tyler Ashlaw, a member of the Morrisonville squad. Ashlaw said after training, the EMTs were able to start using the new program in May, reducing the amount of ink and paper previously used. “To be in the field and see how much pa-

perwork we really do, and see how much this eliminates, it’s pretty amazing,” he said. Prior to the new system, PCRs, which consist of a three-carbon copy form, were used for every call the squad responded to. From there, a copy was then faxed to the hospital. Now, the hospital receives the information with the click of a button. “When we lock our chart, it goes automatically to the hospital,” Ashlaw explained. “Regardless of where we are.” The program also sends the paperwork to their region headquarters in Glens Falls and the New York State Department of Health, saving even further paper, as well as postage. “I couldn’t even tell you how much it saved us, but a lot,” Ashlaw said. “We usually would go through a few cases of paper a year and I think we’re still on the same case of paper that we bought initially in the first part of the year.” The Morrisonville Ambulance Squad was the first squad in the area to choose the electronic system over paper, which according to Ashlaw is something they strive for. “Our agency has been pretty much trying to stay ahead of the game throughout its en-

tire existence,” he said. However, since going live with the new system, Ashlaw said the city of Plattsburgh’s ambulance squad has now got on board with an electronic filing program. “They’re just working out the quirks and

kinks,” Ashlaw explained. As for other squads, Ashlaw suggests they consider the change as well. “It makes your job a lot easier,” he said. “It’s hard at first, but it pays off in the end.”

State of New York, so that would mean money would stay in the State of New York which makes more sense,” added Jeanie D. Roberts, executive director of the North Country chapter of the American Red Cross, who also serves on the 2-1-1 steering committee. Both Roberts and Bernardi said they’d hate to see the switch turned off for the system just as it is beginning to pick up speed. “We really think that year two, which we just started, will be critical in terms of its development and its usage,” said Bernardi who said shutting down the system would be the worst-case scenario. “We just don’t want that to happen because we’ve got a lot of money, time and energy invested in what we think is a very important program.” According to information compiled for the United Way, the regional 2-1-1 system handled 293 calls from its inception through May 31. Of those calls, referrals were made to 340 providers of health and human services such as mental health counseling, legal services, and providers of basic necessities such as food, clothing and shelter. Bernardi said he anticipates the number of those who utilize the system to increase if the program continues. “We think the first year it’s been underutilized but we also recognize that it takes time for this to become familiar to people,” he said. “We really anticipate year two to be year of great growth ... that’s why we fear having to end the program.”

Getting Back Your Bucks Home Improvements That Yield Good Returns each year, homeowners spend billions of dollars improving their homes. While those improvements are intended to improve the home for all its residents, such improvements are also intended to increase a home’s value. Projects that contribute the most to a home’s resale value are the most attractive. This year’s “Cost vs. Value Report” from Remodeling magazine examines the relationship between remodeling costs and resale value. The following projects were some of the best for homeowners looking to improve their home and the home’s resale value at the same time. For more information on the 2009-10 “Cost vs. Value Report,” visit the Remodeling magazine Web site at www.remodeling.hw.net.

* Entry door replacement (steel): Removing an existing entry door and replacing with a new 20-gauge steel door proved to be a homeowner’s best friend, recouping 128.9 percent of its cost at resale. Among midrange projects, this one recouped the most money by a landslide. * Attic bedroom: Converting an unfinished attic space to a 15-by-15-foot bedroom and a 5-by-7foot bathroom with a shower also proved worthwhile to homeowners. Such a project recouped 83.1 percent of its $49,000 price tag at resale. * Minor kitchen remodel: For homeowners looking for smaller-scale projects, a minor kitchen remodel, which includes installing new raised-panel wood doors on cabinets and drawers as well as replacing older appliances with more energy-efficient models, boasts a smaller price tag and a solid return. The project, which costs roughly $21,000, recouped 78.3 percent of that cost at resale. * Backup power generator: Perhaps in light of the headline-gripping natural disasters and storms of the last decade, adding a backup power generator also proved a worthwhile investment. The project involves adding a backup system with the capacity to provide 70 amps of emergency power. That project recouped nearly 59 percent of its initial cost at resale, making it one of the few projects that saw its cost recouped figure increase from 2008-09. * Siding replacement (fiber-cement): Among projects categorized as upscale, no project fared better than siding replacement (fiber-cement) when comparing recouped values. Replacing existing siding with fiber-cement siding that’s factory primed and factory painted recouped almost 84 percent of its initial cost at resale. * Window replacement (vinyl): Replacing 10 existing 3-by-5-foot double-hung windows with insulated, low-E, simulated-divided-lite vinyl windows is also a good bet for homeowners looking to improve their home and its resale value. Also considered an upscale project in spite of its relatively low price tag (roughly $14,000), this project recouped an average of 79 percent of its initial cost at resale.

SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT YOU ARE IN DANGER OF LOSING YOUR HOME. IF YOU FAIL TO RESPOND TO THE SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT IN THIS FORECLOSURE ACTION, YOU MAY LOSE YOUR HOME. PLEASE READ THE SUMMONS AND C O M P L A I N T CAREFULLY. YOU S H O U L D IMMEDIATELY CONTACT AN ATTORNEY OR YOUR LOCAL LEGAL AID OFFICE TO OBTAIN ADVICE ON HOW TO PROTECT Y O U R S E L F . SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE The state encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid office,

there are government agencies and nonprofit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with your lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by the New York State Banking Department at 1-877BANK-NYS (1-877226-5697) or visit the department’s website a t WWW.BANKING.STA T E . N Y . U S . FORECLOSURE RESCUE SCAMS Be careful of people who approach you with offers to “save” your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner’s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services. § 1303 NOTICE NOTICE YOU ARE IN DANGER OF LOSING YOUR HOME If you do not respond to this summons and complaint by serving a copy of the answer on the attorney for the mortgage company who filed this foreclosure proceeding against you and filing the answer with the court, a default judgment may be entered and you can lose your home. Speak to an attorney or go to the court where your case is pending for further information on how to answer the summons and protect your property. Sending a payment to your mortgage company will not stop this foreclosure action. YOU MUST RESPOND BY SERVING A COPY OF THE ANSWER ON THE ATTORNEY FOR THE PLAINTIFF ( M O R T G A G E COMPANY) AND FILING THE ANSWER WITH THE COURT. DATED: July 19, 2010 Steven J. Baum, P.C., Attorney(s) For Plaintiff(s), 220 Northpointe Parkway Suite G, Amherst, NY 14228 The law firm of Steven J.
