SARANAC — It’s not every day you see monsters or aliens, but in the town of Saranac, you’ll get to see both. Family Connections and Saranac Central School are teaming up to host “Saranac Family Movie Night” this Saturday, Aug. 21, at the Saranac Town Hall pavilion on State Route 3. The feature film will be the 2009 animated hit “Monsters vs. Aliens,” featuring the voices of Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogen and Hugh Laurie, among others. Mooers Library receives facelift By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com MOOERS — Although she’s only been the Mooers Free Library director since May, Jacqueline Madison has already made some considerable changes. “The first month I was sort of getting my feet on the ground and the second month I started looking around and said ‘What can we really do to beef it up in here?’” The idea came to Madison to create a gaming space, which the board of trustees was more than happy to have. “They were eager,” Madison said of the board. “They are really into anything that will bring in people, because they want to see this library used in the community.” Within the next month, a Wii game console will be put in the library, provided in conjunction with the board and Friends of the Library. “We need to bring in more teens and young adults. We don’t want them to think it’s all about reading,” Madison explained. “It is about reading, but it’s more than reading. It’s really an information hub for people.” Madison considers the library to be a great resource for the people in the community, especially for those who don’t have transportation. “It’s costly to drive back and forth to Plattsburgh daily,” she said. “So, if you have a resource, you need to take advantage of it.” To make room for the game space in the library,
Movie Night From page 1 LoTemplio, a teacher with the Saranac Central School District. “I reached out to Mary because I knew [the school district] had funding through the Communities of One Safe Schools/Healthy Students Project,” explained Aubrey, who had collaborated with LoTemplio on another school-related project in the spring. “My husband and I have had families over for movies before, but we thought it would be fun to do it on a bigger scale.” The two reached out to Family Connections and soon the event was put together, said Aubrey. The town’s pavilion will be “a nice space” that will allow the film to be shown rain or shine Saturday night. “The pavilion is a space that can be used for a lot of different things,” said Aubrey. “So, we thought we’d utilize it for this and make the event large enough for people to come from all over the area.” Saranac Family Movie Night will begin with arts and crafts activities and healthy snacks at 7 p.m. “It’s not anything too expensive or too extravagant, but it’s something that will be fun for the kids,” said Aubrey, who added free books will be distributed courtesy of Family Connections. The movie will start at 7:30 p.m. and adult supervision will be required during the event.
the book shelves needed to be moved, another considerable change. “I don’t think people really realized what was in the library,” said Madison. “For example, I’ve had people come in and say they didn’t know about the audio books. They were on the back of the last shelf section. So, if people don’t know about it, they can’t access them.” Other changes one may notice when entering the library is the new circulation desk, which was given to the library by the Akwesasne Library in Hogansburg, free of charge. Madison said she has been scouting the area for free office supplies, receiving many from Pfizer Inc. She is also looking to add a new computer to the children’s room in the basement, which will not have access to the Internet, but can be used for games. “We’re not going to have the Wi-Fi or anything in that place because we don’t have any supervision in that area constantly,” explained Madison. Since becoming director, Madison has also made changes to the library’s hours of operation, changing Thursday hours from 2 to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. “On Thursday, our old hours were from 4 to 7 p.m. Not a lot of people came in [that late],” she said. “People are probably preparing for dinner, getting ready for the next day.” Prior to the change, Madison said she would see maybe five people visit the library. Now, the number has doubled.
Boating safety to be offered PLATTSBURGH — Guidelines to safe boating will be offered at two special classes this month by the Coast Guard Auxiliary. “About Boating Safely” will be offered for two evenings Monday, Aug. 30, and Tuesday, Aug. 31 at the Old Base Marina. Certificates of completion will be awarded to participants after a brief exam. The course satisfies New York State requirements for mandatory boater education for personal watercraft (PWC) operators. The course is offered and presented by Plattsburgh Flotilla 15-08, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. Topics covered include preparations to make before you leave the dock; use of charts and navigation rules; how to handle emergencies; state-specific laws and regulations for New York and Vermont, and much more. The cost of the course is $30 per individual, which includes instruction and the “About Boating Safely” booklet. The course will be held both nights, from 5:309:30 p.m. For information about registering and directions to the Old Base Marina, contact Carl Duford at 643-0956.

Back-to-school tech tips
H
ere we are again in another back-toschool period. It’s like Christmas in August when it comes to the purchasing of devices like computers or computer-related devices. It can be quite confusing from the parental point of view sorting out what a college student wants from what they actually need. Here are a few tips. Do they need a computer? Definitely. Research the issues of dorm security and Internet connectivity options and then decide if the computer should be laptop or desktop. Laptops are more expensive, stolen more often, and prone to accidental damage far more than desktops. Make sure what is procured will easily connect. Do they need a printer? Probably. Research the school’s policy on printing. Some schools limit the number of pages printed each semester and charge a fee or may deny any further printing. Either way, spending a reasonable amount on a smaller laser printer is a decent trade-off between cost and convenience. Laser printers cost more than ink-jet printers, but lasers are far more economical to operate in the longterm. After the initial cost the only other
Nutrition and caregiving
cost is paper and a few cartridges over the typical four years of college. Students absolutely need some kind of backup solution for document protection. Along with computer access, many schools offer students a personal “folder” on a server at the school. The arrangement works well when the student is on campus and offers exactly the kind of protection students By Ron Poland need. But can the student access the folder from the dorms? If not, there are options like jump drives and cloud storage. Jump drives are handy, but easily lost after being left behind on a school computer. On-line services like Microsoft’s free Skydrive and Carbonite are more secure and accessible from any Internet capable computer.

n spite of the fact that older folks need fewer calories, it is vitally important that they still maintain good nutritional habits, according to the developers of the elderly food pyramid at Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy. The largest part of the pyramid, the base, is 8, 8- ounce glasses of water, to prevent dehydration and to alleviate constipation. For elderly people who are able to serve themselves water, this is not problematic, but for more dependent folks, caregivers may want to have water readily available for them to drink, perhaps in a spill-proof cup with a straw. The pyramid also suggests that older folks consume higher levels of antioxidants, as well as vitamin D and calcium. Caregivers should incorporate dark-colored vegetables into their older person’s diet, as well as yellow or orange fruits and vegetables that are a good source of vitamins A and C. Whole grains are also essential, and fiber sources appear on nearly every level of the pyramid for the elderly. In addition to helping with bowel function, many whole grains help lower cholesterol and prevent cardiovascular disease. As with the nutrition pyramid for

younger people, this pyramid recommends that fats and sweets are consumed sparingly. The best approach is to try to ensure that the calories consumed are nutritionally dense, not empty calories that are neither satisfying nor healthy. Proteins are an important part of any healthy diet, and they don’t all have to come from animal sources. Protein-rich grains and beans can be substituted for lean chicken, beef, or fish. Vitamin supplements are at the top of the pyramid, but these are not intended to take the place of healthy food choices. Calcium and Vitamin D supplements may be taken to prevent bone loss, and B12 supplements can help maintain nerve function. For more information contact the BHSN Caregiver Resource Center.

Add in some hardy hibiscus Basket prices down again
I
f you are looking to add a tropical feel to your landscape or a late summer blooming plant, consider adding a hardy hibiscus. The hardy hibiscus (hibiscus moscheutos) differs from the tropical hibiscus, (rosa sinensis) which is grown in warmer, more tropical climates like southern Florida or Hawaii. The tropical variety is not likely to survive cold winters unless potted and placed indoors for the winter, while the hardy hibiscus can survive winters in zone 4. These hardy plants are known to produce blooms that can vary from four inches up to a giant 13-inch dinner plate-sized diameter and can be found in reds, pinks and white flowers. The hardy hibiscus is also known as “Rose mallow” or swamp mallow and is native to North American swamps. These plants did not get much attention from hybridist until a few years ago when several noted hybridist began developing various strains. Today, there are more colors and variety to choose from. Swamp mallow plants will come up religiously every year and with proper care, bloom late in the fall till the first frost. If seed pods are kept picked off, your plant will continue producing multiple blooms later into the much cooler fall weather until the first frost.
Hardy hibiscus require much less care than the tropical variety. Once established, they will grow under a variety of conditions and are friendly to most soil. You can grow the shorter versions (3 ft.) in water up to six inches deep. This makes them perfect for low lying areas that collect water or a water garden. Rose mallow are not as likely to attract pests as the tropical version, and require no pruning. And, once established you will have fabulous blooms from mid-summer until the first frost. Winterizing hardy hibiscus is simple. Wait until the first frost and cut the base of the plant. These bloomers need a period of dormancy to survive. Protect with 6-12 inches of mulch for the winter to protect their root system. In the spring, after the danger of frost has past simply rake the mulch off of the plant. The most important thing to note about these tropical looking beauties is they are late to leaf out in the spring. It is important to give these plants plenty of time to leaf out before digging the plant up because you think it didn’t survive the winter. Anne Lenox Barlow has had experience in the agricultural field as a horticulture educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension in Clinton County. She can be reached by e-mail at a.lennox.barlow@gmail.com.
M
arket Basket prices dipped again in July with the cost down to $91.32, from $93.25 in June and up just slightly from $90.04 last July. Prices were down in almost every category with the exception of frozen foods and dairy products, which are both also up for the year. A 10 percent drop on produce prices for the month helped to bring them more in line with last year ’s costs. High costs of both carrots and yellow onions prevented the overall category from going down even more. In good news for dairy farmers, the price of a half gallon of whole milk is up 30 cents from July 2009. Sale prices on store brand butter ended and drove that item up slightly for the month. Ground chuck is a full 24 percent higher than this time last year, bad news for those who love their barbecued burgers. Sales on bottom round roasts and chuck steak helped meat prices go down slightly overall for the month but they are still six percent higher than last July. In the breads, grains and cereals aisles, sugar prices were down slightly for the month, but are still 13 percent higher than this time last year. Flour prices are exactly the same for the month and year. One pound of store brand spaghetti continued to drop in price to an average of 94 cents. Higher prices on frozen haddock drove
Seasonal reminder Local strawberries, blueberries and corn are all available at roadside stands and in the supermarkets. Cantaloupe and honeydew melon season continues through August. First annual wine tour a success By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The Lake Champlain Grape Growers Association has nothing to whine about after the success of the first annual Summer Wine Tour, held Aug. 14-15. Nancy Vesco, owner of Vesco Ridge Vineyard said at least 200 people participated in the tour each day. “I think it went wonderful,” she said. “It was just really overwhelming, but in a good way. It absolutely exceeded any of our expectations.” The tour featured wine tastings at Amazing Grace Vineyard and Winery in Chazy; ELFS Farm Winery &C Cider Mill in Plattsburgh; Stonehouse Vineyard in Mooers; and Vesco Ridge Farm in West Chazy. There were also tours held at Hid-In-Pines Vineyard in Morrisonville and Purple Gate Vineyard in Plattsburgh, although they weren’t licensed to serve wine. During the two-day event, many of the wineries ran out of the souvenir wine glasses as well as some varieties of wine. “This being our first one, we didn’t know what to expect,” Vesco explained. “We’re definitely going to get together and throw everyone’s ideas out there and have a plan so we’re prepared for the bigger crowd.” Vesco was happy however, to see so many people interested in the wine grown in the region. “I’m just glad that the wine lovers came out. There are a lot more people out there that are wine drinkers than what I thought,” she said. “It was nice to meet so many people that have the same inter-
the category up slightly, but all other frozen foods surveyed are down from 2009. These include green beans, ice cream, orange juice and spinach. In the drinks category, store brand cola was on special in many of the stores surveyed and is down 10 percent this month. The cost of a pound of coffee is down 12 percent for the year. Canned goods prices have stayed stable for several months and the continued drop in price on 24 ounces of vegetable oil kept the miscellaneous items category price stable.

It was a mix of people.” Vesco plans to meet with the rest of the LCGGA members soon, and consider the possibility having another wine tour in the near future.

Au revoir Vélo Québec By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Michael Deserres of Montreal was most impressed by the people of New York during his 12th Vélo Québec Voyages Grand Tour. The Grand Tour, a seven-day cycling vacation traveled through upstate New York for the first time since it began 17 years ago. “It’s a great organization,” Deserres said. “It draws in a lot of people.” Deserres, who bikes along the predestined route with his friend, Jean Paul Dupre, said both of them have no particular place to go every year, so they choose to ride along with nearly 1,800 people for nearly 500 miles. However, the outpouring from the people in
the area made this trip different for Deserres. “The welcoming parties in towns, Beekmantown and other villages, it’s been remarkable and it’s been different,” he said during his stop in Rouses Point Aug. 12. “This is what makes New York state different. The people are alongside the highways and applauding. That’s real nice.” Deserres was also surprised by receiving a pamphlet in Rouses Point of places to go and things to see. “That’s unique. That’s just so nice,” he said. “This is the New York state I love.” Having been traveling to Plattsburgh on and off since he was a child, Deserres noticed it was a different experience from the seat of a bike. “The Plattsburgh area I’ve known since I was a boy, so it’s like a homecoming to me really,” he explained. “It’s just good to come back on a bike

because there’s more time to relax and to see and enjoy.” To bring the Grand Tour to the area, many people from many businesses and organizations had to step up to the place. Food was provided by places such as Smooth Moves, Sodexho, Ground Round and Adirondack Coffee Roasters, while organizations such as the Adirondack Boy Scouts and the Compassionate Friends of Northern New York helped things run along smoothly by unloading luggage and serving food. Kristy Kennedy, an organizer of the event and a group marketing specialist with the Plattsburgh-North Country Chamber of Commerce, was pleased with how things turned out. “It was a complete community effort,” she said. “Even if it was just something simple like putting a sign in their window or giving me a call, I can’t thank everyone enough … The outpour from the community was just overwhelming.” When Vélo Québec first announced the Grand Tour would travel through upstate New York, it was estimated participants would spend more than $300,000 in the region, with 83 percent of participants returning in the future. Kennedy now knows these statistics are true. “I think the participants loved the area. A lot of them came up to me and said they would be

back with their family and so forth,” she said. “I can’t even complain about anything. It was an amazing experience and it went off better than I could have even imagined.” Although Kennedy doesn’t know how much money was spent in the area, she believes it is possible they exceeded the amount expected. “I just know by people telling me what downtown looked like with the bikes everywhere and cyclists coming up to me at the tourism booth and asking where is the closest bike shop, is there a laundromat, or the beach or where can they go shopping,” she explained. “ They were just everywhere.” Corinna and Paul Maggy, owners of Mountain Riders, also noticed the people throughout Plattsburgh. The Maggys worked alongside Kennedy and the Adirondack Visitors Bureau in preparation for the tour, setting up a water station at AuSable Point Campground and volunteering at Clinton Community College, where many of the cyclists slept under the stars. “It was amazing to see cyclists filling the town. They had a shuttle to the mall, farmers’ market, and the beach so it was great for local businesses,” said Corinna. “All the restaurants were packed.” Paul agreed, adding throughout their volunteering, they must have spoke to at least 1,200 of the cyclists personally. For the future, Kennedy said she is more than willing to have Vélo Québec return to the area. “We have talked to them and thrown it out there that Plattsburgh would be happy to host again and they seemed receptive to the idea,” she said.

Mountain Lake PBS holding video contest Station encouraging kids to focus on health and fitness By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The idea is simple — get kids moving. Mountain Lake PBS has launched a video submission contest called “Mountain Lake Moves!” in an effort to get kids and their families off the couch and eating healthier. The contest invites children in grades 6-12 to submit their original videos promoting “healthy eating and/or physical activity.” Jennifer Kowalczyk, director of communications for Mountain Lake PBS, said the contest is part of the station’s effort to do something on a local level to promote health and wellness. “We’ve been wanting to do a video contest for awhile, and just hadn’t come up with the right [topic],” said Kowalczyk.
Jane Owens, the station’s director of education and outreach, had recently participated in conferences at the national level that dealt with the topic of health and wellness, said Kowalczyk, which provided the inspiration for the contest. “I think it’s a great fit with a new strategic plan we’re writing,” said Kowalczyk. “The contest engages the community in asking them to be a part of it, rather than us just providing the content for it.”
Mountain Lake Moves! encourages submissions of videos 3060 seconds in length. The videos must incorporate the tagline “Mountain Lake Moves” and must be the original work of the student, though guidance can be provided by adults. Videos will be subject to review for content and appropriateness prior to uploading onto the station Web site and all videos will be judged on creativity, composition and message.
The winning video will air on Mountain Lake PBS, and the creator or creators will win an iPod Touch. The runner up video creator(s) will win a Flip video camera. “What we’re hoping is that once all the videos come in, we’ll have at least a couple of them that we’ll be able to air on Mountain Lake PBS as a public service announcement that promotes health and fitness for kids and families,” said Kowalczyk. “This contest provides students the opportunity to develop the 21st century digital literacy skills that they’ll need to be successful,” Owens said in a statement. “This local initiative is aligned with the national Let’s Move campaign to raise a healthier generation of kids.” Entries are due no later than 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, and may be mailed to Mountain Lake PBS, 1 Sesame St., Plattsburgh N.Y. 12901. Complete criteria for Mountain Lake Moves! submissions, including how to submit videos on-line, can be found at www.mountainlake.org/moves.html.
Starting a walking program N
early five million Americans suffer from heart disease. One of the safest and easiest ways to improve your cardiovascular fitness is by walking. Walking is an ideal low impact aerobic exercise. If done regularly, it can reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer, lower total cholesterol, raise healthy HDL cholesterol and lower blood pressure. It can help maintain healthy bones and muscles, stabilize blood sugar, improve immunity and relieve some of the stress in your life. Walking has become one of the most popular ways to stay fit. It is inexpensive, and all it takes is a little motivation and a comfortable pair of
shoes. According to the Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research, men who walk at least half an hour, six days a week, can cut their mortality rate from heart disease in half, compared with those who are sedentary. Studies show similar heart health benefits for women when they exercise regularly. Walking for 30 to 60 minutes daily can substantially increase energy expenditure or calorie burn, which will help to control weight. When you combine walking with a healthy diet, and strength training routine, you can significantly reduce body weight and body fat levels. To maximize the benefits of any aerobic
exercise, you must sustain your activity for at least 20 to 60 minutes at each session. If you are out of shape, start with a 10- minute walk and gradually add 2 minutes a week until you reach your goal. Be sure to consult with your physician if you are just getting started with an exercise program. If you don’t have 20 minutes to spare, try to do two 10-minute walks. The key to your success lies within yourself, so lace up your sneakers and put one foot in front of the other. You will be one step closer to a healthier lifestyle. Tournament returns to keep memory of Saranac teens alive By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com WEST PLATTSBURGH — It has been nearly a year and a half since Stephanie Heath and Courtney Alexander died in a car crash in Saranac. But, their giving spirit will be kept alive during the second annual Courtney and Stephanie Memorial Scholarship Softball Tournament, Sept. 4-5. The girls, who were seniors at the time of their accident, had both planned on attending the nursing program at Clinton Community College. Cindy Alexander, Courtney’s mother, explained the scholarship was set up to help a Saranac High School student who was planning on going into the medical field. “It’s going to people that are a lot like the girls,” Cindy explained. “[It’s] not going to the smartest kid in the class … It’s going to somebody that doesn’t have a free ride, with everything paid for.” The first year, Jackie Smith received the
$500 scholarship, while Carmen Leduc and Heidi Chamberlain received the scholarship this past school year. “It’s a rough time of year when graduation comes around, but it kind of helps knowing we’re helping somebody,” said Cindy. “Every year, it will keep [Courtney’s] memory alive, hopefully.” Smith considered receiving the first scholarship an honor. “It was good because I was really good friends with Stephanie. We drove to school every day,” she said. “I was glad to get it and I was happy.” Last year ’s tournament raised $9,000 towards the scholarship fund, and Cindy hopes the tournament will allow the scholarship amount to grow every year. This year ’s tournament, which will be held again at the American Legion Post 1619, 219 Rand Hill Road, will have some minor changes. “It’s a one-pitch tournament this year,” explained Cindy. “If it’s a ball, then it’s a base, and if you swing and you don’t hit
it, you’re out.” This year will also feature monetary prizes for the top three teams. First place will receive $500, second place will receive $275 and third place will receive $150. The event, which will begin Saturday, Sept. 4, at 12 p.m. with a balloon release, will also feature a Chinese raffle, children’s games and lots of food. “I just hope a lot of people turn out and remember them,” said Cindy. To sign up a team, contact the American Legion at 561-3452. The cost is $150 per team.

Geese go away, and don’t come back another day D
espite rampant rumors that the state of New York had plans to implement a massive effort to reduce the state’s burgeoning population of Canada geese, the NYSDEC wants the public to know that there is no such plan. In an article in the New York Times, dated July 23, it was reported that the state intended to eliminate several hundred thousand geese, in an effort to bring the population under control. Information that was initially provided by the New York Times was later used by numerous media sources in follow-up articles, including one of my own. As a result, NYSDEC wildlife staffers have been forced to respond to a barrage of calls and e-mails about the false stories concerning efforts to eliminate Canada geese. In the village of Saranac Lake, there has been an ongoing battle to control Canada geese along the shorefront of Lake Flower for several years. A family of geese settled on the lake almost a decade ago, and over the years, their numbers continued to grow. The goose problem is most noticeable in and
around the state boat launch in the center of the village, where the park’s extensive lawn has been regularly soiled with their droppings. It has been difficult to walk anywhere near the waterfront without steeping in goose poop, which is extremely slippery after a rain or in the morning dew. Numerous efforts to eradicate the geese have been attempted by both the village and the DEC, including a major goose roundup, netting and relocation campaign. The village also attempted to scare the birds away by placing life-size, wooden silhouettes of dogs along the shoreline. Neither of these methods had any affect on the geese or their droppings. The captured geese, which are known to imprint on a specific body of water, returned shortly after their capture and removal. And, they often could be found basking in the shadow of the large black, plywood silhouettes. Finally, after several years of struggling with the problem, the village has installed a simple strip of orange surveyor’s tape along the entire shoreline. The tape is strung between survey stakes, about a foot off the ground, and the previously mowed lawn is now left to grow about a foot high, in a small strip along the shoreline. Following the installation of the tape, and the
tall grass that grew up along the shoreline in just a few weeks, the boat launch and adjacent town park appears to be amazingly clear of goose poop. The grassy strip has become a proverbial ‘line in the sand.’ The geese simply won’t cross it. There are many other communities across the Adirondacks that may want to consider similar efforts. The cost is minimal and the public relations benefits are considerable with no trapping, no relocation and no shooting necessary to ensure that there is no goose poop underfoot.
A New Season Begins Although I am still stuck in the throes of a very productive fishing season, I’ve recently been getting an itch for the hunt. Two weeks ago, I went into hunting camp with a few friends, to buck up some firewood and take care of a few other items necessary for the upcoming season. While we got a lot of work done, the day ended early when the handle of the splitting maul broke, much to everyone’s relief. Our small cabin was relatively free of mice, and other pests, but it was nearly hidden by a huge field of overgrown ferns and berry bushes. In the past few weeks, I have put in several afternoons on the range, sharpening my skills with both bow and rifle. During this timeframe, I have also found a cool tint in the morning air. It’s probably just wishful thinking, but it is a tint just the same and it signals adventures to be had
in the months to come. I’ve also been noticing that a few trees are beginning to turn, primarily along the lakeshore or high upon the peaks. Although it’s still far too soon to think about fall, it never hurts to dream and it’s always fun to prepare. The new season begins is less than six weeks. The realization comes with news that the 2010-2011 hunting, fishing, and trapping licenses and Deer Management Permits (DMPs) became available for purchase beginning Monday, Aug. 16. Licenses and permits can be purchased at any of the 1,500 license sales outlets statewide. Sporting licenses are also available via the internet at www.dec.ny.gov. Sporting licenses are valid beginning Oct. 1 through Sept. 30, 2011. Anglers should take note that the 2010 fishing license expires Sept. 30, a full two weeks before the close of trout season. Annually, the DEC issues 1.8 million sporting licenses annually through 1,500 license issuing agents. The department also coordinates a hunter education program with 3,300 volunteer hunter safety instructors providing nearly 40,000 certificates to students every year.

Couple receives the celebrity treatment By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Not many people can say they have been with the same person for 50 years. But, George and Joanne Rabideau can. The Rabideaus celebrated their golden anniversary Aug. 13 — with a little bit of style. Their nephew and godson, Shawn Rabideau, is an event planner and designer based in New York City who has worked for celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Barbara Walters and Star Jones. Recently, he was seen on Bravo as the event planner for the show “Bethenny Getting Married?,” featuring natural food chef Bethenny Frankel. However, his most recent endeavor was putting together the centerpieces for his aunt and uncle’s anniversary celebration at American Legion Post 20. “We called him and we asked if he would do the flowers,” Joanne recalled. “And, he

said, ‘Oh, I’d love to aunt Joanne’ … that was it. I just told him how many tables there was. We didn’t know anything. Shawn said he was happy to do the flowers for his aunt and uncle, because he sees them as an inspiration. “They've been married for 50 years and they really are indicative of what a marriage is,” he said. “They've seen the good times, they've seen the bad times, and they're an inspiration for all the couples out there that you really can make it through.” Although he left the rest of the decorating to his cousins, Shawn admitted they looked

to him for some advice. “They were asking questions … so I gave them some pointers to help them,” he said. For the flowers, Shawn brought together what he considered “fun” flowers, in yellows and whites. “My aunt, she wanted something bright and cheerful,” he said. “I wanted something that was just bright and pretty and simple. That is why I chose the yellow and white. I didn't want it to be too ‘wedding’ because of the fact that it's not a wedding.” It was however, a renewal of their vows. After 50 years together, both Joanne and George decided it was time to recreate the day they became husband and wife. “We had talked about it at previous anniversaries, but this is a milestone,” said George. “We had to do something.” Ever the romantic, George also surprised his bride with brand new wedding rings. “I didn’t know anything about it,” laughed Joanne. Shawn created Joanne’s bouquet, which she took with her down the aisle of St. Peter ’s Church, a place that holds special meaning for the couple. “We were married there. My mom and dad were married there. I was baptized there. Her mother and father were both buried from there. My father was buried from there,” George explained. “Even though we weren’t always using that church, we always felt a connection.” For their future together, George already has some plans in mind. “Getting this together, doing the planning … we’re keeping notes and for our 100th we’re going to make some changes,” he said.
