‘Bee’ friendly: City swats GMO seeds and pesticides By Teah Dowling

teah@suncommunitynews.com

PLATTSBURGH — The Common Council of the City of Plattsburgh encourages city departments and residents to refrain the use of GMO seeds and pesticides in the practice of lawn care and beautification. The common council brought up this issue after city engineer of the City of Plattsburgh, Kevin Farrington, made a plea against the use of GMO seeds to help one vital piece of the area: Bees. A local beekeeper, Farrington stressed his concern to the council of the use of GMO seeds and pesticides because of its harmful effect on the bee population. Councilman Michael Kelly decided, along with the rest of the council who unanimously approved, to try to stop the use of these items. “It’s not a problem that can wait,” Kelly said. “If bees die, humans won’t be too far behind them.” BEES AND PEOPLE The use of GMO seeds and pesticides arose to Kelly when he read about neonicotinoids being banned and discontinued in different countries (Brazil, Peru, Russia, China, Colombia, Hungary, Bermuda, Argentina and several more) because of its effect on pollinating insects, such as bees. Because of the use of GMO seeds and pesticides, bees —

specifically worker bees — leave their hives, queen, plenty of food and a few nurse bees that take care of the queen and immature bees, and don’t return. There are three words to explain this: colony collapse disorder. CCD is the phenomenon coined in late 2006 due to the drastic rise in the number of disappearances of western honeybee colonies in North America. These disappearances occur for a couple different reasons, including because the use of neonicotinoids. The neonicotinoids — normally sprayed onto GMO crops — give off a potential toxicity to bees and other pollinating insects, even with low levels of contact, that impact their ability to forage, learn and remember navigation routes to and from food sources, leaving them buzzing away from their hives and dying in the area surrounding it. The issue with this: many agricultural crops worldwide are pollinated by bees and people eat most of those crops now infected by pesticides, which have contributed to an increase in cancer, birth defects, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, kidney failure, autism and many more. “That’s why we have all these wonderful things to eat because bees do their job at pollination, but the combination of pesticides and GMO crop production is killing bees left and right and we’re basically being told to shut up and eat this stuff,” Kelly said. “It’s disgusting.” “So, that’s why the city council unanimously approved a resolution to try to do something to stop these things.”

TAKE ACTION TODAY Though the common council cannot prohibit the sale, distribution and promotion of neonicotinoids, GMO seeds and other pesticides at this time, they will, however, write letters to state and federal legislators to take statewide and nationwide measures on the production of GMO crops. Kelly said he’s drafting the letters currently along with other plans to start his “bee-friendly” initiative locally. One of the things Kelly hopes to implement in the City of Plattsburgh is a “bee-friendly” pledge. If local homeowners decide to take this pledge to have a GMO-free and pesticide-free lawn, they’ll receive a sign stating that their lawn is “bee-friendly.” Though this initiative hasn’t started, Kelly shared one way people can help this issue on their own: “Don’t do anything.” As a healthy alternative to using GMO seeds and other pesticides, people can grow their crops organically and let some weeds and dandelions and slip through the cracks. One person’s problem could be another bee’s lunch. “This may be the most important issue of our time and we have to do everything we can at the local, state and federal level to make sure people stop using these materials,” he said. “We want to leave a planet where our children can eat, survive and have a happy and healthy life. “If we can do a good job educating people, we can make Plattsburgh a pesticide and GMO free zone.”

Lomeli’s Mexican Food opens doors in Plattsburgh By Teah Dowling

teah@suncommunitynews.com

PLATTSBURGH — Lomeli’s Mexican Food officially opened at 20 Plattsburgh Plaza on Aug. 14. Owner and head chef Suzette Lomeli decided to open the authentic Mexican restaurant because of a lack of Mexican restaurants in the surrounding area and high praise from their food service customers. Before Lomeli’s decided to go into the restaurant business, the Lomeli’s — sous chef Erika Lomeli, hostess Nellie Lomeli, general manager Armondo Martinez and cashier

Alyssa Lomeli — delivered their Mexican food to homes or catered parties. Now after three months of renovating and redecorating the former building that once

was My Greek Kitchen, they’re situated in a family-oriented business and serving their family history to community members and visitors. Lomeli’s mother had five kids at a young age. Being the oldest, Lomeli took the role as helper. When her mother worked, she had to cook for her father and all the kids. “She always had to cook big food for the family,” she shared. “Being in the kitchen with her, she’s the one that taught me how to cook all the food that I’ll be cooking here.” Lomeli decided to kick-off with a soft opening and a small menu, consisting of burritos, nachos, tacos, taquitos, quesadillas, sal-

ads and enchiladas. Most options come with a side of rice and beans and extra sides such as Lomeli’s homemade chips and signature salsa. At different times throughout the week, Lomeli plans on serving up specials, including Taco Thursdays and a variety of American-Mexican options on Sundays. “The food is authentic and everything is fresh and homemade,” she said. “Everything will be made to order.” Lomeli’s Mexican Food is open for dinner from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday. For more information, visit their Facebook page “Lomeli’s Mexican American Food.”

Run for Jon continues its help for families in need By Teah Dowling

for Jon to raise money for the families of local children with serious medical problems. “It’s a neat and unique event,” he said. “The event itself has turned into a wonderful community event.”

teah@suncommunitynews.com

PERU — The 25th annual Run for Jon will take place Saturday, Aug. 29 at Forrence Orchards. The proceeds from this event will go into the Jonathan Evans Memorial Fund, which benefits local families who have children with serious medical needs. “It’s a great thing,” said Scott Woodward, co-organizer of the run. “And it has been for a long time. Your money is going to a tremendous cause.”

TODAY’S RUN

THE HISTORY In 1990, Jonathan Evans was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer at 13 years old. Soon after his diagnosis, two long time friends of the Evans family (Don and Shirley), Mark Elmore and Woodward organized the first Run for Jon to raise money to help pay for expenses such as medical and travel, since they traveled across the country in search of treatment. Just two weeks before the second run, Jon passed away. “It was a shock at the time,” Woodward said, who was Jon’s cross country coach at Peru High School. “He had a lot of potential as a runner, but, beyond that, he had a lot of potential as a human being; he was a bright, vibrant and great young

man. “Cancer touches every family and, in this case, it touched the Evans family.” Every year since then, family and friends have held the Run

Now, 25 years later, the run continues to support families of school-aged children who suffer from serious medical conditions. Each year, the run brings in about $5,000 with approximately 300 participants. And Shirley, distributor of the money, searches for families in need of extra funds. “There are multiple families who will benefit from this,” Woodward said. “If you have children who have medical issues, she will help you out.” Registration starts at 3:30 p.m., followed by a 1.25 mile non-competitive walk at 5 p.m., .5 mile kids fun run at 5:30 p.m. and a 2.5 mile cross country run at 5:45 p.m. Entry fee is $10 per person, $25 per family and $2 for the kids fun run. For more information or early registration forms, visit www.runforjon.com or the Facebook page “Run For Jon.” “It’s hard to believe its been 25 years,” Woodward said. “Time certainly flies by.”

Former Police Chief Sabo honored at retirement dinner PLATTSBURGH — Longtime SUNY Plattsburgh Police Chief Arlene Sabo was honored by colleagues, friends and area law enforcement agencies at a farewell gathering held Aug. 13 at Valcour Conference Center. Sabo, who is moving to Vassar College in Poughkeepsie to serve as director of safety and security, retired from University Police at the end of July. More than 100 people attended the dinner, and speakers included members of the campus, city and state community. They honored Sabo with official resolutions, plaques, gifts and personal memories. SUNY Plattsburgh President John Ettling praised Sabo’s compassion, and Vice President for Student Affairs Bryan Hartman said, “we always looked to you, and I always trusted your judgment. I will miss that very much.” Director of Housing and Residence Life Steve Matthews said, “Arlene has always been well respected on this campus and around the police world. This place is a better place because of you being here.” The organizations recognizing Sabo included the College Council, Plattsburgh City Police, New York State Police and New York Women in Law Enforcement, among others. Bruce McBride, former commissioner of University Police,

said, “you cannot underestimate the many contributions she made throughout the state.” Following the accolades, Sabo’s mother said, “I wonder if I’ll be able to live with her from now on.” Sabo began her career in law enforcement as a patrol officer at SUNY Potsdam in 1986 and came to SUNY Plattsburgh in November 1993 as the assistant chief under Chief Richard Boas. When Boas retired, Sabo was named chief in January 2001. She ended her service as one of only two women to serve as chief of police in the SUNY system and the only woman to serve in that capacity in New York’s tri-county area of Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties. Assistant Police Chief Jerry Lottie was named to serve as interim chief following Sabo’s departure. “Thanks for setting the bar very high for me,” Lottie said with just the slightest touch of sarcasm. Sabo said she couldn’t have asked for anything more. “When I looked up what to include in retirement speeches, it said I should leave instruction. This group doesn’t need any. I know I’m leaving this campus and community in good hands.”

All-day benefit to support Bushey family By Teah Dowling

teah@suncommunitynews.com

PLATTSBURGH — On June 22, Peru resident Nate Bushey was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma in the brain, lungs and lymph nodes. An all-day fundraising benefit for him and his family — wife Rebecca and sons James, Gary and Aedan — will take place Aug. 30 at the American Legion Post 1619 on Rand Hill Road. The day will consist of a co-ed softball tournament starting at 8 a.m., with registration of $125 per team, horseshoe tournament at 3 p.m. for $8 per person, silent auction throughout the course of the day, 50/50 and raffle all day with drawings at 5 and 7 p.m., spaghetti dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. for $8 for adults and $4 for kids, and motorcycle ride with registration from 9:30 to 11 a.m. for $15 per rider and $5 per passenger, which includes a grill lunch. All proceeds will go to the Bushey family living expenses and future treatments. THE BEGINNING Originally, Nate was diagnosed in August 2013. Doctors discovered a spot on his back and three minute traces in a lymph node. Once doctors removed these, he was cancer free. On June 22, he got into a car accident. After, he discovered he had cancer once again. “Surprisingly enough, the accident had nothing to do with the tumor,” Nate said. “The malfunction of the truck actually ended up saving my life.” When doctors were clearing his cervical spine, they discovered that the cancer returned only on his brain through a MRI. After doing a full body scan, they found more traces of cancer in his lungs and another lymph node.

“The only thing we noticed before any of this happened was that he had tingling at the tip of his fingers,” Rebecca said. “We thought it was carpal tunnel.”

caretaker. So far, Nate’s GoFundMe account has raised up to $9,000 for their living expenses. “We’ve had a lot of contributors from New York to California,” Rebecca said. “That’s helped a lot.” Currently, the Bushey family is waiting on approval to receive a new medicine called Nivolumab for free since his insurance won’t cover it due to it being a newer medicine. This costs $17,000 per treatment, which takes place every two weeks for at least six months. Because of Nate and Rebecca not being able to work and taking care of three children under the age of 5, they’re trying to get it for free from the drug manufacturer. Also, Nate is looking into a BRAF-targeted chemotherapy, which slows down the growth of cancer. FUTURE ITINERARY

Since his diagnosis of stage 3 melanoma, he’s been through 15 rounds of radiation. CURRENT SITUATION

Now, Nate’s at stage 4 metastatic melanoma. The Bushey family is living day-to-day with help from friends and family since Nate is unable to work as a FedEx driver due to brain tumors, including the largest one being a 2.1 centimeter tumor on his stem on his brain, and Rebecca also unable to work because of Nate’s current situation. She’s required to stay home and be his primary

Rebecca plans on returning to school this month. Nate also will be attempting to go to college this month for business management while continuing his treatments for cancer. “Right now, his condition is stable,” Rebecca said. “But nothing is guaranteed with cancer.” For more information about the events, contact John Recore for the softball tournament at 5656632, Joey Deyo for the horseshoe tournament at 578-7710, Tami Bushey for the silent auction at 593-1942, Luke Sanger for the 50/50 and raffle at 593-9464, Jody Pardy for the spaghetti dinner at 569-2166 and Mike Laforest at 569-6587 for the motorcycle ride. missing and no one knows where he is until investigative reporter, Joshua Banks, gets on the case to solve the mystery and write what’s considered to be the biggest story of the decade and finds himself in a web of trouble. This story explores ideas on the fringe of science fiction and real 21st century theoretical physics. “My talk will focus a little bit about the book because I don’t want to give too much away about the missing scientist and what happens to Josh,” Bebo said. “I am, however, going to talk about time, light and relativity — spending a good amount of time talking about the science of the book that makes it seem real.” BATTLE OF PLATTSBURGH This historical fiction about the Battle of Plattsburgh, “Of Lake, Land and Liberty: The Battle of Plattsburgh in the War of 1812,” tells a story about two boys from upstate New York during the War of 1812 — how their desire to defend their country, along with their thirst for adventure, leads them to become heroes in the Battle of Plattsburgh. The story is based on actual events that took place during the war in and around Lake Champlain and Plattsburgh. “I grew up in Plattsburgh and heard about the Battle of Plattsburgh all my life,” Bebo shared. “I got really inspired, so I wrote the story and I could almost see and put myself back in time.”

This book was Bebo’s first published work, released in the beginning of 2014 because of the Battle of Plattsburgh anniversary. He thought it would be a great way to break into the publishing business. After that, Bebo began publishing more works sitting on the shelves he wrote at different times. THE CHARBONNEAU LETTER This historical fiction, published at the end of 2014 and written in 2001 titled “Family Legends - The Charbonneau Letter,” focuses on one of Bebo’s ancestors, Toussaint Charbonneau, who was on the Lewis and Clark exhibition, and his wife, Sacagawea. The family fights to save their land and recover a priceless family heirloom — a letter from William Clark commending their ancestor, Charbonneau — and readers will see how the letter and land came into the family’s possession and trace their connection to the old French trapper and his teenage wife. Based on the actual events that took place during the famous exhibition of 1804-1806, this story explores the relationship between Charbonneau and Sacagawea, recounts their journey together across the great unknown and follows the lives of their descendants, fictional and real, through modern times. “It’s a story about the present and the past, how they tie together and how the dreams and memories of a family bring the past to life,” Bebo said. “It’s a wonderful adventure story.”

THE AUTHOR HIMSELF Joe Bebo was born in Plattsburgh and went to school in Boston where he studied music composition at Berklee College of Music (bachelor’s degree) and Computer Science at Boston University (master’s degree). Since his college days, he’s lived in the Boston area, first playing the drums, where he worked with everything from rock bands to society groups. Along with music, Bebo had his own martial arts school where he taught Chinese Kenpo and Ju-Jitsu. Because of one of his martial arts students, he learned computer programming as a hobby, so he could get better at playing games and do something during the day while he played music at night. Now, he programs computers for a living, along with writing. “I don’t write for a purpose,” he explained. “I write because something bubbles up inside of me and it keeps coming up and all of a sudden I have a book. “If not writing, I feel like I’m going through a withdrawal.” Bebo has written a variety of stories over 30 years, most of them full-length fiction novels, based on the things he likes doing and researching about, from action novels with martial arts to techno-thrillers with computer and music themes. So far, he’s written about a dozen novels. Three, so far, have been published. One is in the works and one is in the process of being published. “The thing I ask of my readers is to not expect the same thing every time,” Bebo said. “I want to give you something different every time.”

Uncorked for Cancer to benefit FitzPatrick Center By Teah Dowling

teah@suncommunitynews.com

PLATTSBURGH — The 2nd annual Uncorked for Cancer will take place Thursday, Sept. 3 from 5 to 9 p.m. at The Butcher Block. The evening will be filled with d’oeuvres by The Butcher Block, a combination of antipasto, meats, cheeses grapes and other foods that pair well with the 50 red and white wines provided by over 10 wine suppliers with very knowledgeable staff on hand pouring. Also, there will be raffles, an auction and music by Tim Hartnett and Julie Canepa. All proceeds will benefit the FitzPatrick Cancer Center. “We are very fortunate to have a cancer center right in Plattsburgh,” said Robert Diman, co-organizer of the event. “Unfortunately, cancer is being diagnosed in our community more and more within the last few years.

“While national organizations are extremely important and necessary, we [CancerBgone] felt it was imperative to focus on our local community and ensure that money raised all stays local.”

CANCERBGONE HISTORY CanerBgone was started in 2010 by Patricia Diman after her uncle Seamus passed away in Ireland from pancreatic cancer. She felt strongly that something needed to be done locally to help ease the suffering of those diagnosed with cancer in the North Country. CancerBgone is run by volunteers who are either survivors or caregivers of those with cancer whose mission is to ease the suffering of cancer warriors and their families. “Whether it is a family member, friend or stranger, everyone’s suffering is very real,” Diman said. “As a community, we have a responsibility to reach out and assist those that are suffering.” The group’s goal is to raise funds to help the local North Country community in their fight against cancer, which is achieved by various fundraising projects and activities that promote camaraderie and community involvement. The group has conducted or participated in numerous fundraising events in the area to include two 5k races, two zumbathons, ice skate-a-thons, comedy nights featuring comedians that appeared on Letterman and HBO, the Rockeater Adventure Race, three dodgeball tournaments, a New Year’s event, Adirondack Summer Wine Tour and Uncorked for Cancer. THIS EVENT Last year, during one of CancerBgone’s meetings to look for new ideas and ways to raise money for the FitzPatrick Cancer Center, volunteers Amelia and Scott Lushia came up with the idea of having a wine tasting event in Plattsburgh. The group of volunteers liked the idea and partnered with Southern Wine and Spirits to provide wine for the event and reached out to The Butcher Block for the location. Last year, they raised just under $12,000. Diman said they hope to meet or exceed last year’s success. Overall, the group has raised over $50,000 for the FitzPatrick Cancer Center and has completely renovated an extended stay room in R530 at CVPH, replaced all the infusion chairs at the center and helped with travel costs for patients and their families. “With the growing number of people being diagnosed also

comes the growing need for financial assistance for equipment, travel expenses, support groups and educational training for staff,” Diman said. “We strongly feel that we have to help one another.” Tickets cost $20 per person and are available for purchase at CVPH, the Butcher Block and online at www.cancerbgone. net.

Mooers Library << Continued from | p. 1

FUNDRAISING ISSUES Besides a book sale Madison put on in the early summer months, there have been no fundraisers to raise money for the library besides a letter. On Aug. 4, Mooers Free Library sent out a letter to Mooers residents with library cards asking for a $10 donation to reach the board’s goal of $10,000. “They agreed that’s the most they should request from the community,” Van Nortwick said. “I don’t want to push that letter. “We would like to get the funding the library actually needs so that we can provide everything the community needs from the library.” Both Van Nortwick and Madison didn’t agree on the amount the board asked for and said the letter should’ve asked for at least $50,000 in order to help fund the library this year and the future library/community center. CHANGING MINDS The idea of a new facility came after a discussion to add a wheelchair lift to the current building to make the library ADA compliant. To add a lift to the building, built in 1932, it would’ve cost them $23,000. However, since the board waited so long to make a decision, the cost went up over $40,000 because of the new ADA laws. The board, at that point, believed the cost of the new lift and getting the current building up to code would equal the cost of a new building, which both Van Nortwick and Madison agreed with. “Even though this is small town, this is a very small library,” Van Nortwick said. “It’s very small, very cramped and we don’t have the space and the ability to do what an actual library needs to do.” The discussion of the new center began in 2012. When the discussion went over to the town council, divisions in agreement formed on whether the community needed a library. For several months, the town council members argued with each other because some felt that the town shouldn’t have a new library and others thought it would be a waste of money. Initially, the library was going to be placed in Town Hall, an option no one seemed to agree with. After several months of arguing, they decided on a property on School Street, donated by president of the board Susan Evans and her husband, across the road from Mooers Elementary School. SLOW START

www.suncommunitynews.com

When Madison found out about the new building in the beginning of 2012, she drew out a plan of what the new library/ community center could look like. After she drew the plans that were labeled with dimensions, she handed it over to the board in order to get blueprints and a contractor bid to see exactly how much this project would cost. Earlier this month, one of the councilman went to the library and picked up Madison’s drawing since the board didn’t get the blueprints or show them the drawing. One thing that is done right now, however, is the shell. The outer of the building is complete, but, on the inside, there are no walls, plumbing or electricity. But in order to do that, the board is required to take Madison’s drawing and turn it into blueprints so that the contractor can give a realistic quote. For this new building, the town received over $60,000 in increments of three from the New York State Construction Grant. They just completed outer frame and foundation last year because the grant required them to produce something. Madison had to report back to the state as to what the status was of the building. “The board wasn’t very forceful,” Madison said. “I had to speak up.” If the building is not completed by the end of this year, they need to pay over $60,000 back to the state. LIBRARY CENTER In Madison’s drawing, she distinguished different aspects of both the library and the community center — located in the same building but divided by wall. The two rooms would be connected by a door and a window area to see what’s going on in both rooms. In the library, there will be a bookroom, children’s room, study areas, gaming/TV room and a presentation room. In the community center, there will be large tables, extra space for gathering and a kitchen area for cooking food for guests, specifically children during the library’s several programs throughout the year. Along with their programs, they hope to start offering GED training, 3D printing and other opportunities they don’t have in their homes. “We wanted a place so that people can have a place to network, do programs and have conferences,” Madison said. “This new building will expose them to things they probably won’t have access to and that’s really what library services are all about: giving a children a chance to have those opportunities.” THE NEED Though some council and board members disagree on this

Published by Denton Publications, Inc.

new center, Madison and Van Nortwick believe there’s a huge need for it in the community. As this summer rolled by before the library closed, Madison and Van Nortwick noticed an abundant number of teens and children outside sitting on the benches and the steps of the library using the free WiFi — something that’s very hard to come by in Mooers. “I see them everyday for hours to use the library WiFi,” Madison said. “Obviously, there’s a need for them to have a place to sit, hang out with each other and actually do something more productive than just walking around and causing trouble.” Along with the free WiFi, children flocked to the area because of a change of scenery from what it was for two years prior when the library was without a grounds keeper and a sign. Van Nortwick moved from Brooklyn into a house next door to the library, a place she initially thought was an empty building. One day, the library garbage had knocked over and spilled in her driveway. Her and her family picked up the trash, but she was determined to talk to the people next door, when she saw them, about the trash spilling. One day, she saw the light turned on in the building. She went over and saw Madison’s daughter working, along with first noticing the library. Three days later, Van Nortwick returned with her two children. She chatted with Madison about the upkeep of the library and the sign, which had been knocked over two years earlier by an act of vandalism. The board didn’t fix the sign or help upkeep the library grounds. With the help of Van Nortwick, they put up the sign June 6 of this year, fixed the grounds and added two new sitting benches. Since then, the library has gotten five new members. Now, they’re hoping to get more members, more funding and more support from the board. Phone calls made to the board president for comment went unanswered. “I’m really not sure why you would volunteer to be part of a board if you’re not passionate about what you’re on a board for,” Van Nortwick said. “If it’s not in your heart, and you’re just doing it to say you’re on a board, it’s worthless and it doesn’t do anything for the community. “They have to step up and do what they have to do.” For more information about the library, its services or how to make a donation, visit the library itself at 2430 State Route 11 (Main Street), visit its website www.mooerslibrary.org, call 518-236-7744 or email moorlib@primelink1.net.
