Two die in snowmobile collision on Indian Lake INDIAN LAKE — Alcohol is a suspected factor in the death of two men who were killed in a snowmobile collision on the ice of Indian Lake Saturday, March 2, according to State Police. Around 7 p.m., State Police in Indian Lake received a report of a fatal snowmobile accident on Indian Lake, according to a press release. State Police members, state Department of Environmental Conservation forest rangers and members of the Indian Lake Volunteer Fire Department & Ambulance Corps responded to the scene on the lake about 2 miles south of the Indian Lake Marina on Lake Shore Road (CR 9) in the town of Indian Lake. Police investigators found that Thomas R. Dykstra, 59, of Suffern, was operating his 2009 Arctic Cat snowmobile on the frozen lake in a northerly direction and entered the path of a second snowmobile, a 2002 Polaris, operated by Paul A. Prill IV, 51, of Schenectady, which was traveling in a southerly direction. A front-end collision ensued, and both men were ejected from their snowmobiles. Dykstra and Prill were transported to Nathan Littauer Hospital, where Hamilton County Coroner Virginia Jennings pronounced them deceased. On March 3, Dr. Jung Lee performed autopsies and determined the cause of death for Dykstra and Prill to be severe blunt force trauma. The manner of death was ruled accidental. The cause of the accident is under investigation. Alcohol is suspected as a contributing factor.

johng@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — Despite concern among local sportsmen to the contrary, the ability to obtain a permit in Essex County to carry a concealed pistol in public has not been taken away. According to Essex County Judge Richard B. Meyer, there have been talks statewide about a uniform pistol permit policy that would allow
pistols under certain “restricted” circumstances — like for hunting and target shooting — but not for carrying concealed in public. Essex County is one of a handful of New York counties that allows “full” or “unrestricted” carry, meaning a pistol can be concealed and carried in public for the purpose of self defense. Recently, Meyer began sending out a two-page cover letter with all new pistol permit applications, drawing attention to a November 2012 court decision that upheld the ability of state court judges to restrict a pistol permit to only cer-
tain uses such as hunting, target shooting or the defense of a person’s home. The ruling, handed down by the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, said county judges, acting as pistol licensing officers, can restrict permits and grant the right to carry a concealed weapon in public only to those who show they have a special need for self-protection greater than others in the general community. That led local sportsmen to believe that Meyer was stating in the letter that he intended to stop CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

ILCS essay winners honored as carnival prince, princess INDIAN LAKE — The prince and princess for the 2013 Indian Lake Winterfest — Feb. 15-17 — each won an essay contest to earn their spots on the royalty float in the annual parade, sitting in front of King Ken Cannan and Queen Bev Cannan. Emily DeShaw — the princess — and Jimmy Zumpano — the prince — are both students at the Indian Lake Central School. Here are their essays.

Princess: Emily DeShaw I would like to be the princess of Winterfest, because I like doing things for my community. I love living here because it’s beautiful. It would be an honor to be a princess for a day. I also love representing my town. Being the princess of the Winterfest would be like taking it to the next level. Someday I would like to be the queen of the Winterfest. I do some things for my community, like I’m a junior member of the American Legion Auxiliary. I also donated to the ASPCA for Christmas with the school and Girl Scouts. I’m in Girl Scouts, Church activities, and I’m Alter Server at Church. I love to march in parades and pick up garbage at the beach. I go to the library programs, swim lessons, earth club, cancer walks and I help in the community garden. Someday I would like to work at the beach as a lifeguard. Someday I would like to be the Town Supervisor, I know it’s hard work, but I think I can Manage. I also do CASMA which is a school singing program. I do some extracurricular activities too, like basketball, baseball, soccer, skiing, ice skating, hockey, and figure skating. I go

to the ice fishing derby and the summer one too. I love to do town plays, Art Center plays and workshops at the Art Center. I have been skiing since I was 4 and a half. I have done five plays: “The Music Man,” “School House Rock,” “Charlie Brown,” “Jungle Book” and “Peter Pan.” I think a good princess does not brag, they
are honest and polite. They don’t have to be pretty or smart they just have to be kind to others and care for others too. They should be reliable and a hard worker. They should definitely be kind too. I thinking I would make a good princess because I think I’m kind, honest, reliable and caring.
I would like to be a Prince because I do lots with the community. I pick up trash at least once every year. I shovel my Grandma’s stems sometimes. I am planning to do Boy Scouts when they start. I donate some dog and cat treats for Christmas at the ASPPCA. I march in most of the parades, such as the St. Patrick Day Parade and the Halloween Parade.. I use the Town Library and I like reading books. I also go to the reading programs there in the summer. I attend most of the swimming lessons on the Town Beach. Last year I went to the Long Lake Beach with the Earth Club and I am planning to do it this summer. I do some of the after school activities such as Paperairplane Club, soccer and Basketball. I play a guitar and I am learning how to play the trumpet. I also ski at Gore, skating at the town skating rink and sledding at my house and other places. I snowshoe in my own backyard. I would like to be Prince because I would like the clothes on me and I would like to be in a float waving to people. I am proud of this town, it’s way better than a big, crowded city. I think I would be a good Prince because all my friends say I am polite, a hard worker, I am most of the time honest, people trust me, I do my chores mostly by not being asked, I share with others, I am caring and mostly happy. I think I would be a good Prince for the Winterfest of 2013.
Indian Lake St. Patrick’s Weekend Celebration March 15-17 INDIAN LAKE — Whether you’re Irish or not, everyone is welcomed at Indian Lake’s St. Patrick’s Weekend Celebration, March 15-17. On Friday afternoon everyone is encouraged to come out for the parade. This parade showcases the Hat Contest. Indian Lake Central School grade school students will make hats that will represent this years PARP theme and will be participating in the parade. All kids are welcome to participate. We also want to invite all dogs to join in on the parade in anticipation of the “Mutt Strut”. Friday evening will see

New York’s new SAFE Act now requires pistol permit holders to recertify their license every five years.
But Meyer said he has not changed anything formally at this time. He said the letter that went out with new pistol permit applications was for “informational purposes only.” “I’m not changing anything at this point,” Meyer said. “Not until I hear from someone that I have to.” Meyer said he has never had an incident in which an individual with the right to carry a pistol concealed was

The first year this event drew nearly 50 contestants. 12 categories were determined after the judges decided that there were too many different kinds of dogs represented. These categories are Largest, Smallest, Cutest, Most Unique, Most Polite, Shortest Haired, Longest Haired, Best Dressed, Most Colorful, Most Talkative, Youngest and Oldest. Even if you don’t have a dog it is fun just watching the procession. We will be offering early registration for this event; forms will be available at the Town Hall and the Chamber of Commerce. guns have been taken from individuals pending the disposition of a crime or an order of protection, Cutting said, but not for the misuse of the right to carry a pistol concealed. Meyer acknowledged that the pistol permit process from one county to the next is currently anything but uniform. Restrictions are left to the discretion of the sitting county judge. “This is an emotional issue and there is a lot of confusion out there,” Meyer said. Cutting provided a survey compiled by the New York State Sheriff ’s Association that outlines the pistol permit policy of 34 out of 62 total counties in New York. Of those surveyed, 10 allow the ability to carry a concealed pistol in public, with the permission of the county judge. Most only allow permits restricted to hunting, target shooting and home defense, unless a citizen can prove an “exceptional circumstance” that would require the need to carry a concealed weapon. Clinton County, for example, allows permits for “sportsman purposes only.” Franklin and Hamilton counties, on the other hand, still issue full concealed carry permits, while Warren County issues both restricted permits as well as conceal carry permits at the discretion of the county judge.

MINERVA — If you were at Minerva Central School Talent Show the evening of Feb. 13, you were treated to an amazingly diverse set of performances by wonderfully talented students, MCS, staff, and community members. The crowd was large, the stage was full of life and energy, the refreshments were tasty and abundant, and the non-stop entertainment was stunning. If you weren’t there, you missed something special. Here is summary of what you experienced that fine evening (if you were present, of course): various solo and duet vocal numbers, a cooking rock combo with vo-
cals, drama club comedic sketches, an amazing performing pooch named Jack, a piano duet, poetry performance art, guitar solos, a fabulous select chorus, and dance solos. All of this was organized and directed by MCS Vocal Music Director Sabrina LaPointe on behalf of the MCS Drama Club. Tables with attractive tablecloths and settings were arranged in the school’s gymnasium to give the space the feeling of a cabaret or nightclub. Beverages and deserts were available, with all proceeds benefitting the MCS Drama Club. It was a great event, something that is put together every other year at Minerva Central School. The talents offered up all participants were numerous and impressive; the whole evening was very enjoyable for all.

Minerva to hold public meeting on state land purchase MINERVA — The Minerva Town Board will hold a public meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 12 at the Town Hall to discuss the state’s purchase of the former Finch Pruyn property in the town of Minerva and what it can mean for the town. Nicaraguan effort laudable
T
o better understand the severe poverty and unspeakable living conditions Nicaraguans endure every day, a couple from California decided last June to move there and live off $2 a day like 80 percent of Nicaragua does. That’s $2 per day for everything from food to drinks and clothing to health care and shelter. With the average cost of a plate of food in Nicaragua at $2.50, the couple gave up after just five days, saying they could no longer keep up their energy level on the meager amount of food that much money provided. They documented the experience on a blog at lifeoutofthebox.com. “In order for us to be as productive as we always are, we had to get more food,” the couple wrote. “It was hard to even think on the last day of the experiment and that was the final straw.” The couple later called it a “life changing experiment.” “Our perspective on life was completely altered once we experienced life in survival mode,” they wrote. Yet survival mode is precisely how Nicaraguans live every day. Hunger is rampant in the country. It is the second poorest country in the western hemisphere; only Haiti has worse poverty. Nearly 50 percent (just over 5 million people) of the population exists on just $1 a day and a third of the population still has no access to sustainable sources of drinking water. Schroon Lake’s Clare Whitney and Elizabethtown’s Brody Hooper know firsthand how citizens of Nicaragua struggle to obtain the things so many Americans take for granted. Working with the Plattsburgh-based North Country Mission of Hope, the two high school seniors have made it their objective to raise awareness and money to provide food, schooling and shelter to Nicaraguans. Clare and Brody comprise the student portion of the North Country Mission of Hope leadership board. Clare has twice been to Nicaragua and plans to go again in July. Brody was there a week ago. While there the pair helped repair facili-
ties operated by Mission of Hope, distribute food and build modest shelters for Nicaraguans. They’ve also raised thousands of dollars to provide lunch for school-aged children — which is often their only meal of the day. Since it costs money for Nicaraguan children to attend school, Clare and Brody also work tirelessly to raise cash so Nicaraguans can get an education. Currently, nearly a quarter of all Nicaraguan children will leave school by the first grade. The latest fundraiser planned by Brody and Clare will take place this Sunday, March 10 from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at the Cobble Hill Inn Restaurant in Elizabethtown. Tickets for the spaghetti dinner are $10 a person and $30 for families of four or more people. The dinner is sponsored by National Honor Society chapters at Schroon Lake and Elizabethtown-Lewis schools along with the Cobble Hill Inn, which is providing the spaghetti and garlic bread. These groups and the owners of Cobble Hill Inn should be commended for the role they are playing in this worthwhile endeavor. At the same time, we simply cannot say enough good things about these two selfless local teens and the North Country Mission of Hope which gives 97 percent of all donations directly to the Nicaraguan people. We can think of few not-for-profit organizations that operate on less overhead. Then, there is Clare and Brody. As teenagers, this dynamic duo have accomplished more to help their fellow man than many Americans will in a lifetime. Lets get behind their effort by flooding this fundraiser with people. s it a phrase that just sounds good, or is it how we live our lives? For many it’s a life code, deeply rooted in who they are and what their lives are all about. For others it’s a pickup line creating an opportunity to take advantage of those who possess nothing more than hope and faith that they can trust what is being promised. According to recent Rasmussen Surveys, most Americans feel connected to a local church or religious organization. Generally, people feel that they are connected and play a positive role in some organization with 67 percent rating volunteer work more important than politics. Fifty-seven percent would rather be called a good citizen than a patriot, while 86 percent believe individuals make their own success. Americans, a full 88 percent of us, see honesty and good parenting at the top of the list when it comes to successful lives. With statistics like these, one can understand the frustration so many feel today as we watch our elected officials on all fronts continue to let down the people they’ve promised to serve. In those surveys, government and politics are near the bottom of the list. We want to believe when we cast our votes that candidates have our best interest first and foremost, but time and time again, we get left paying the price while they reap the benefits. The sequester that we’ve been told would not happen, the effects of which would be so repugnant that it would force our warring political parties to capitulate and seek a compromise, has now taken place. The president hasn’t led; instead, he has spent more money continuing to campaign against the opposition and predicting doom, gloom and suffering in days ahead. The Republican-led Congress, once in favor of cutting tax loopholes with the effect of raising taxes, has dug in their heels telling us that the sequester spending cuts aren’t really cuts to current spending. And the Senate seems to be missing in action these days. No one is leading. And leading is what they all promised to do when they came looking for our votes. Follow me. Trust me. The simple truth is, their lack of honesty and integrity has produced a mess

Behind the Pressline Once again we are peppered with empty promises. I wonder how long we can afford to let these self-centered, egotistical politicians make decisions that will affect the future of our country. Always more concerned with their job security and their legacy, it’s nothing more than a tennis match for them and we, unfortunately, are the ball. They’ve accepted a job and once again they failed to get the job done. Governing is not about them. It’s always been about the people … a people who believe in freedom, opportunity, honesty, hard work and a commitment to future generations. We are paying a tremendous price for a bipartisan government that continues to fail to meet its responsibility. At some point, we must end this calamity. We are now forced to wait another two years before we’ll get a chance to attempt to send them a message. I don’t think we have another two years to wait for them to drive the nation further into the hole. Our forefathers, the framers of the American Constitution, recognized the threat of governmental tyranny — the use of arbitrary power by those in government over her people — but they were also concerned with the danger associated with a populace uprising. “Separation of powers” and “checks and balances” were designed to protect the country from the European kind of rule. As a nation we must put aside our political differences and demand accountability from the people who have sworn to serve. It’s time for the American people to make their will known and insist that the government do their job to serve and protect us, not themselves. North Country Ministry play group celebrates 8th birthday NORTH CREEK — Eight years ago, in February, North Country Ministry’s Baby’s Place Play Group was born. Today it continues to welcome babies and children through age 3 with an adult to enjoy playtime with other little ones and their caregivers. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, “Play is essential to the social, emotional, cognitive and physical well being of children in early childhood. It is a natural tool for children to develop resiliency as they learn to cooperate, overcome challenges, and negotiate with others. Play also allows children to be creative. It provides time for parents to be fully engaged with their children, to bond with their children, and to see the world from the perspective of their child.” Play Group meets from 10- 11:30 a.m. on the first, second and third Tuesday of each month (following the school calendar) at the Adirondack Community Outreach Center on Rt. 28 between Wevertown and North Creek. The playroom is welcoming and spacious affording lots of opportunity for exploration and creative play experiences. Adults learn from each other, build friendships and offer support as they enjoy special time with their little ones. The volunteer leaders have many years of experience in early child-

umans have been struggling with cancer for centuries but it has been only in the last 100 years that many of the root causes of cancer have been revealed. There are a few genetically heritable conditions that are known to lead to a high probability of developing cancers in tissues such as skin or breast. However, the great majority of malignancies are found to harbor multiple genetic mutations which are present only in the tumor itself. These mutations are called “somatic” mutations because they are not found in the genes of the host’s sperm or eggs and therefore must have occurred in the afflicted tissue sometime during its conversion from healthy tissue to a cancer. The events that induce or set the stage for most of these cancercausing somatic mutations in humans are well known: 30 percent are linked to tobacco use, 35 percent to diet, about 15 percent to obesity, about 15 percent to infectious agents, and about 5 percent to radiation or chemicals. Because many cancers have highly unstable genes, cancers are often characterized by multiple types of malignant tissue within the same tumor, and those arising in the same organ in different people may behave differently, all of which complicates the treatment of these

Complications in causes, cures of cancer illnesses. In the late 1800s, William Coley, a surgical oncologist, knowing that it had been previously observed that bacterial infections occasionally led to the remission of cancers, developed a mixture of bacteria with which to treat cancer patients. He then purposefully infected cancer patients with these bacteria in order to induce an immune reaction that, when successful, led to the regression of the tumor. However, more recent studies of our immune responses to cancer have revealed that these reby Wes Dingman sponses are at least as likely to promote the cancer as they are to cause its removal. Detrimental immune responses include the inactivation of natural tumor destroying enzymes and the promotion of the activity of genes that facilitate cancer growth. Furthermore, cancers (like infections and injuries) are frequently characterized by inflammation in the surrounding tissue. Along with this inflammation, new blood vessels grow. These new blood vessels, which would normally hasten healing in the case of a traumatic injury, instead promote the growth of the

ebruary 2013 was a pleasant Winter month here in the North Creek area as temperatures and snowfall were near normal. This is in sharp contrast to last year when February was unusually warm and had very little snow, only 3.2 inches. The average high was 29.9 degrees and the average low was 9.4 degrees giving us an average of 19.7 degrees, 1.3 degrees below normal. The highest temperature, 43 degrees, was recorded on the 26th and the lowest , -8 degrees, was recorded on the 10th. There were 5 days with below zero readings compared to an average of 6. tumor by providing it with more nutrients. Recently it has been found that our immune system’s responses to cancer may be more flexible than previously believed. Immune reactions can operate in at least two modes: one being pro-inflammatory and cancer enhancing, the other being anti-inflammatory and tumor repressing. Thus research is now being aimed at finding ways to re-program our immune system’s response to malignancies and foster its known ability to promote the tumor ’s regression and removal, just as Dr. Coley’s bacterial mixture did when it occasionally benefitted a patient. Success is this pursuit may have many benefits in addition to the treatment of cancer. Other difficult-to-treat illnesses involving an out-of-control immune system include rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, and multiple sclerosis, to name a few. These latter scourges are all characterized by an immune system that is causing damage rather than promoting healing. Many of these medical conditions may be more successfully treated when we learn how to control the nature of our immune responses. There was measurable precipitation on only 8 days, with the greatest amount, 0.86 inches falling on the 27th. Snowfall was very near normal with 16.9 inches falling, only 0.4 inches above normal. Our seasonal total is now 53 inches, only 4.9 inches below normal. Most of the snow fell during two storms, one on the 8th and one on the 27th. The latter storm was a very wet snow here in Riparius where only 6 inches was recorded but at higher elevations as much as 16 inches was measured. The river reached its highest level, 5.72 feet on the 1st and its lowest level, 3.41 inches, on the 20th and 22nd. Correction: January 2013's high temperature was 44 degrees, not 28.6 degrees as stated in the article.

All do a great job at keeping roads and driveways open. So many in the area attended the concert of "Third Day" at the Civic Center on Friday night. So many great reports of their enjoyment. Good attendance at the Seventh Day Adventist Church on Friday night for their concert. So much talent in our area. Luther and Greta Grimes are sharing a room at the Adirondack Tri-County Nursing for rehab after being able to share a room at the Glens Falls Hospital. Ava Conlon did so well after having her tonsils and adenoids out and tubes put in that she did not have to stay overnight. Sunday, March 3 a great number gathered at Camp Triumph from 1 to 4 p.m. to have tons of fun at sliding and eating. Despite the cold and hard work, everyone had a great time. Fun to see so many adults going down the hill. Starting last night for five Sunday nights there will be a story about the Easter Story on the History Channel at 8 p.m. Be sure to watch the one on Easter Sunday. You have heard that honesty is the best policy? The one or more, please take back the wood taken from a home on South Johnsburg Road recently. Local students learn the basics of Girl Scouts By Andy Flynn
andy@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK — Local Girl Scouts spent their 100th anniversary year as busy as ever and continue to make plans as the organization moves into its second century. Troops 3295 and 3289, Indian Lake Liz Forsell retired as leader of Troop 3295 this past year, co-leading the group of Girl Scout Juniors with Shelly Oliver. Now Elizabeth Noonan has taken over the helm, with assistance from Oliver and Michelle DeShaw. They have nine members. Oliver remains leader of Troop 3289 with 13 Girl Scout Brownies, and she’s assisted by DeShaw and Noonan. Last year, the troop consisted of Daisies and Brownies. “All the Daisies moved up to Brownies, and nobody would take over Daisies,” Oliver said. “All 13 of them bridged.” Both troops meet separately every other Wednesday — Brownies 5:30-6:30 p.m. and Juniors 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Yet they do a lot of activities together. Recently they went tubing at Oak Mountain and skating, and they were joined by Girl Scouts from Speculator, Wells and Northville. Fundraising takes a lot of their time, with cookie sales, a pasta dinner and their firstever Cookie Walk in December. Proceeds go to their trips at the end of the year. The Brownies haven’t yet decided on a destination. “Last year we wanted to do horseback rid-
ing, but all the Brownies were too short,” Oliver said. “I said maybe this year we can do horseback riding.” Last year the Brownies (now Juniors) went to New York City and saw “Mary Poppins.” And the Daisies and Brownies went to the Great Escape water park. They also spend a lot of time learning their leadership roles and earning patches. Community service included marching in local parades. “I think it gives them something to do,” Oliver said. “Hopefully they like what we’re doing with them because we do lots of fun activities. They like selling their cookies and getting their incentives.” Troop 3345, Indian Lake Liz Cannan is the leader of Troop 3345 with a group of four Girl Scout Cadettes. They’re not as active now as they’d like to be. One reason is because Cannan is battling kidney disease and is expected to have her last kidney removed and replaced with a donor ’s kidney this year. “This has been a tough year,” Cannan said. “I don’t know when I’m going to be in or out.” But she hasn’t given up hope on the troop, and they’re trying to make plans to go tubing at Gore Mountain and hold a spaghetti dinner. They will be working on their pet badge, and Cannan would like to arrange a trip to the pet store at Aviation Mall in Queensbury. “I want to take them to the pet store and go behind (the scenes) with the manager,”

They are planning an overnight camping trip to the Yogi Bear ’s Jellystone Camp-Resort. Troop 3493, North Creek Sarah Williams and Rachel DeGroat are co-leaders of North Creek’s newest Girl Scout Troop 3493 for Daisies. There are six members, all in grade 1. “We try to do one troop per grade level,” Williams said. “We send out flyers at the beginning of the school year, and (we create a new troop) if we get enough interested, which is five or more. You need five to start
a troop.” The Daisies are so new to Girl Scouts that the leaders are spending a lot of time teaching them the basic principles of Girl Scouts. There are some activities, like arts and crafts, but all inside for now. “It’s really fun. It’s not out and about in the world, yet,” Williams said. “The Daisies are just so cute. They are so full of energy. We spend a good chunk of the meeting just running around playing games.” Troop 3016, North Creek Sarah Williams and Susan Minucci are co-leaders of Troop 3016 with a group of 14 Girl Scout Juniors. “They’re pretty active,” Williams said. “They’ve been together since they were Daisies.” They worked on a jewelry badge and visited Judy Brown’s garnet studio in North River. And they’re working on simple meals, basic cooking skills. “It’s fortunate for them that Susan and I are both professional cooks,” said Williams, owner/operator of Cafe Sarah. purchased property on Shaw Rd. to build their vacation cabin in 1950. Shaw Rd. then had an old hand laid stone wall that went along the West side of the road. Since my Dad was a “do-it-yourselfer” in every sense of that thought, the cabin was to be built on an existing stone foundation around an existing massive huge hand laid stone fireplace that remained for many years after a fire, had taken the house and buildings to the ground on this purchased property of many acres, we were told. The view of the Knob was outstanding from this location. The view of the remaining structure was not. Phoebe’s Knob is a beautiful mountain which can be seen from Shaw Hill Rd. in Adirondack, NY and is only 3 miles from end to end. There is so much known and unknown history here as there is in all of Adirondack, a small hamlet on Schroon Lake and in the Town of Horicon. One such piece of history is that Adirondack was originally called Millbrook. The name was changed in 1872 due to duplication in the name of Post Offices. I could write and write about this wonderful place but today I am limited for space. Adirondack already boasts one book called “Reflections of the Past” by Janet Robbins Mooney for those interested. I came to “the hill” in Adirondack when I was only a small child and my parents
