Hornbeck Indian Lake plays for National Kidney Foundation appointment at standstill Snowshoe softball game raises $3,000 By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com

ALBANY — Gov. David Paterson’s nomination of Peter Hornbeck to the Adirondack Park Agency Board will most likely not make it out of committee. According to State Sen. Elizabeth Little (R-Queensbury), senators serving on the Senate Finance Committee indicated March 3 that Hornbeck’s nomination will not be moved because there are not enough votes in support of it, and the governor ’s office has been advised as such.

INDIAN LAKE — Softball players gathered at Benton Field in Indian Lake Feb. 27 to play in a slow-pitch softball tournament with a little twist. They stepped into snowshoes and hit the field in order to raise funds for the National Kidney Foundation. Sponsored by Barefoot Wine, Indian Lake Restaurant, the Bear Trap and the town of Indian Lake, the event raised $3,000 that will be donated to the foundation. The tournament was organized by Elizabeth Cannan and she never thought it would reach that level of popularity. “I didn’t think it was going to be as big as it was and I am amazed at the support we received from the community,” she said. It featured 80 players on eight teams in a single elimination format. Over 175 people, however, attended the event as spectators.

Widlund Gallery features student art By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK — Students from Johnsburg Central School will be associated with the likes of accomplished artists during the month of March as their artwork hangs in the Widlund Gallery at Tannery Pond Community Center for the eighth annual student art show. All 139 elementary art students will be showcasing at least one piece and nine high school students of Studio Art and Art History classes will present some of their work as well. “We have represented each art student at least once,” said Johnsburg art teacher Maria Glode. The work is primarily two-dimensional with some three-dimensional pieces. A sampling of some of the art to be on display will include third grade paintings based on the book by Giles Andreae called Giraffes Can’t Dance, illustrated by Guy Parker-Rees. Second graders will present torn paper owls, Greek mosaics as well as additional renditions of well-known art pieces. Several high school students chose their favorite works and then duplicated them on the tops of art room stools with free-hand

Mexican Yarn paintings as shown in the Widlund Gallery at Tannery Pond Community Center made by eighth graders at Johnsburg Central School.

drawing and acrylic paints. Renditions will include a variation from works of Salvador Dali to Peter Max. Also featured will be Mexican yarn paintings in the spirit of folk art tradition. The pieces are formed into intricate patterns with glue and yarn as opposed to the traditional hot wax and yarn substitute. Glode noticed an increased dedication in her students as they prepared their pieces to be shown to the community. “It makes them feel good to see their art hanging outside the walls of the school,” she said. “They work harder and take more pride in their work when they know it will be displayed.” One student, Irok Malikowski visited the art room on his own time in order to finish his Greek mosaic piece, according to Glode. His hard work paid off and his piece not hangs in the Widlund Gallery. The Exhibit opened on March 5 and will be open the entire month. The Widlund Gallery in Tannery Pond Community Center is located at 228 Main Street in North Creek and is open from Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. and on Sundays when the "Open" flag is out. TREKS gets local youth into the wild By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK — Local youth wilderness enthusiasts ventured into the forests surrounding Ski Bowl Park on Saturday to learn safe hiking and guiding techniques from TREKS leaders. TREKS, an outgrowth of the Johnsburg Youth Commission, has dedicated itself to providing activities for local children in order to get them out of the house and into the woods. It is in its first year of operation and is fashioned much like the Lake Placid Outing Club, which has been in operation for 20 years and has taken young people on many trips including hiking in the Alps and kayaking in the Caribbean. “We hope to develop a

safe appreciation in these children of the wilderness where we live,” said Rick Morse, TREKS leader and co-founder. Winter Survival Day as it was named stressed the importance of learning to survive in cold temperatures. Participants joined local DEC forest ranger Steve Ovitt and fellow leaders Morse and Steve Tomb in classroom learning as well as practical situations outside. They hiked away from the park and began to set up camp as if they were going to spend the night in the woods. “The emphasis was on having fun and what to do in case of an emergency,” said Morse. Participants included Todd Millington, Patrick McCarroll, Shannon Ovitt,

Seamus Tomb, Brendan Tomb, and Casey Tomb. Morse acknowledged that these skills are necessary for safe lifetime activities and are also useful for making money in this area. Local rafting and hiking present many guide opportunities. “Guiding involves skills,” said Morse. “TREKS kids go to the woods and waters to gain a sense of adventure and learn to safely navigate the terrain.” TREKS has planned another trip to the Albany indoor rock gym for April 19. They are looking for interested youth as well as adult volunteers for this trip as well as to become leaders with TREKS. Contact TREKS co-founder Kelly Nessle at knessle@frontiernet.net for more information or to sign up.

Cannan remembers when snowshoe softball was once an event at the annual Winterfest celebration, but has since disappeared. She wanted to bring the tradition back to Indian Lake. “I wanted to see this event continue and thought a benefit event was the perfect opportunity,” she said. Team Fierce, made up of all Indian Lake residents, took the tournament championship. Cannan was pleased with the results and hopes to make the tournament an annual event with the continued support from her volunteers. “An event can be planned to perfection, but will never be a success without volunteers,” she said.

o not forget to turn clocks ahead this weekend. We are almost to spring, but March in the Adirondacks can bring lots of snow. The smell of maple syrup is in the air. Many are getting ready to tap or have already started the process. Hope it will be a good year. There is nothing like real maple syrup on pancakes and waffles. There was about 160 people at the friendship gathering for Myrtle and Elmer Buyce. It was held at the Thurman Baptist Church. There was great food and many family members there. Over 30 people took Rose Allen to China Town on Saturday to celebrate her birthday. It was a beautiful day and fun chat. Ron and Brandy Millington and daughter, Tearyn from Allegany County enjoyed the weekend with family. The Monday night youth group from the Calvary Bible Church in Wevertown enjoyed a great weekend at Word of Life in Schroon Lake. All of Rick Kenyon's family gathered for his birthday celebration on Sunday. Earl Allen and Alonzo Conlon visited Ona Dunkley on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Allan McDonald stayed with his sister and family, Ron and Kathy Allen over the weekend. They visited Allan's Mom, Emma Parsons in the hospital. Events On March 13, is the yearly meal/sugar-on-snow gathering at the Athol Town Hall. The event sill raise money for the cancer foundation. There is always good music and food. Happy Birthday Gary Millington Jr, Gert Howe, Debby Aldous, Scotty Jo Millington, Kelly Russell and Taylor Beavers. Happy Anniversary Gary and Robin Wolper. Enjoy each and every day.

Question of the month: What is your favorite genre of books to read and why? I like non-fiction because I like to learn about dinosaurs and study them. I also like outer space books because astronauts can float in the air. Brayden Bush - Kindergarten - Newcomb Central School I like to read Dora books because I like Dora so much. I don’t like to read any other books. Aleesha Washburn - Kindergarten - Johnsburg Central School My favorite genre is rhyming nonfiction because it is fun to read. Austin Washburn - Grade 1 - Johnsburg Central School

on’t miss the great spring skiing out there now! The railroad track south from North Creek is going to be good for a while, past where the power line crosses the river. I also skied in towards Moose Pond off the Santanoni trail on Sunday afternoon and it was excellent skiing once the sun softened the “concrete.” Everyone I met was grinning ear to ear. Unfortunately, there are few other choices around here for novices or old-timers like me, where a long distance trail (seven miles to Moose Pond) is fairly flat and the snow stays late. On March 11, I picked my way through a foot of snow in a Warrensburg parking lot when a light, high trilling caught my attention. Above me in the small trees a flock of sleek cedar waxwings was eating the tiny dried (unknown to me) fruits. As I tried to get a better look at the birds, they would move to another tree, but they weren’t about to leave the bonanza. I don’t see them in winter up here, but I read that they move in flocks all winter from one area to another in search of berries - feeding until a source is gleaned bare. Unfortunately, many of the berries they find now are on invasive shrubs that spread by means of bird droppings. Cedar waxwings get their name from the small native tree, redcedar (one word), actually a juniper, where they feed on the tiny cones. We have very few in the Adirondacks, though, they are common farther north in calcitic areas of Canada. Waxwing food is 70 percent berries, flowers and sap, with insects being an important food for the young for just their first few days. After that, the adults carry berries, up to 30 chokecherries at a time, in pouches in their necks to feed the young. They also do a lot of fly-catching from snags along the Hudson in the summer, landing on rocks in the river between flights. Indicative of their vegetarian diet is that flocks of

My favorite genre is nonfiction. I can learn about people who no longer live who are important to the USA. Kurt Fuller - Grade 3 - Johnsburg Central School I like mysteries the most because it keeps me guessing who the villain is and because it builds suspense. Ryan Haneman - Grade 3 - Newcomb Central School My favorite genre is mystery because it is interesting to read because Goosebumps is a mystery and i like to read Goosebumps. Connor LaRose - Grade 4 - Johnsburg Central School

waxwings hang out together well into the summer when almost everyone else is busy raising young. They have been known to nest into early October, because they wait until berries mature in late summer to breed. They use berries in their courtship to feed the intended spouse and they will pass a berry down a long line of birds in a social situation. One source says that one bird that sits on a weak tip of a berried branch will pick and pass berries on down a line of birds so they can all have some. I’m not sure I believe this, but they certainly have a strong inclination to feed each other. I once saw a waxwing feeding a young phoebe that was sitting on a snag along the Hudson! As phoebes also eat dried berries early in the spring when cold weather shuts down any insect activity, this did seem likely the fledgling would eat a berry without force feeding by an over-enthusiastic waxwing. Cedar waxwings are common throughout New York State. Because they are very “tame” and thrive in open areas with many shrubs, suburbs probably agree with them and farmland works too. Whereas many birds in these areas are decimated by cowbirds laying eggs in their nests, many waxwings either desert a nest with a cowbird egg in it early on, eject the egg, or damage it so it does not hatch. Many other species have not yet figured out how to deal with cowbirds, which have recently spread from the midwest where they followed bison as they moved through the prairie. The cowbirds had to lay an egg in a handy nest, then move on with their hosts. The red waxy tips on the wing feathers seem to be signs of maturity, and older birds use this signal to find other experienced birds to breed with. Studies show that these older pairs raise more young than “spring chickens”. Anyone who spends enough time watching wildlife will see behaviors no one else has ever seen. I once saw and heard a waxwing singing on the top of a small balsam— and I mean singing. Nowhere can I find mention of the song, four different clear tones repeated over and over. I went back with a recorder the next day but of course the bird wasn’t there.

M

arch is a month replete with adages, old wives’ tales, customs, and celebrations. First, March is reputed to “Come in like a lion and go out like a lamb,” but March is a trickster who has been known to reverse these roles. Shakespeare admonished, “Beware the Ides (15th) of March.” He penned that warning to

Julius Caesar in 1599, but the superstitious among us heed it to this day. It is right up there with Friday the 13th as a day to WATCH OUT! Once we get past midmonth, its time to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. My maiden name began with McC, but you don’t have to be Irish to make corned beef and cabbage, eat Irish soda bread or drink green beer.

The wearin’ of the Green is practiced by many Irish wannabes, this writer included. I’ve even been known to wear shamrock earrings. March 17 is a happy day of parades and parties. Finally, after St. Patty’s Day, we can look forward to March 20, the first day of spring. Back on Feb. 2, Punxsutawney Phil, the famous PA groundhog saw his shadow. This ushered in six more weeks of winter. But, now TIME’S UP! Winter must release the land from her frosty grip and let the March lamb romp into April.

Bravo barVino To the News Enterprise: My greatest thanks to the Bowers family and the staff and patrons of barVino for their very generous aid to the earthquake victims in Haiti. During the month of February they dedicated one dollar of every drink served, some customers pitched in more, and last week they donated $1,865 to the relief group NYC Medics. I was with the first team of NYC Medics to arrive in Haiti after the quake. We started a clinic in one of the hardest hit areas of the city, and treated more than a thousand people. Afterwards, we rode with the 82nd Airborne, going into the growing camps of displaced peoples, helping those too sick and injured to get out. Right now, the sixth team of NYCMedics is in country, where the need is just as real as when I arrived. Every dollar donated goes directly to supporting our doctors and medics on the ground. Response to VIC closure

71315

To the News Enterprise: As a life-long resident of the Adirondack park, I'm finding it very hard to believe that the VIC centers that are costing ''us'' the taxpayer at least a half million dollars per year are of much benefit to the vast majority of us. I am sure local business in the immediate vicinity of these centers prosper, but not much else would, in my opinion. I know Paul Smiths college looked into funding their center and decided it was not financially feasible to support, so why should anyone else expect me and all other taxpayers to foot the bill? In a time where fiscal responsibility is necessary from our government I cannot believe so many are willing to allow expenditures that aren't at least offset by some income, such as would be necessary to sustain a private business. We have nearly three million acres of state land with trails, whitetail deer, foxes, birds and every other creature available to view almost anywhere in the park and at no cost to any one. We have a huge Adirondack history museum in Blue Mountain Lake that can provide a plethora of information about Adirondack life and history. There may be a large number of people that visit these visitors centers, but I sure can't believe that people would drive hundreds of miles to see them. They may stop there to visit because they are already here, but I'd be willing to believe Cooperstown or Lake George or the High peaks are the real tourist draw that the VIC's are a benefactor of. I am not in favor of anyone losing their job in these tough economic times, however, these trials and tribulations must teach us, our government and our leaders that any endeavor we as a society choose to engage in must be able to sustain itself or it will be doomed for failure. I am not against educating people about this great place (my home), but nothing is free. Those who are truly concerned to find a way to fund this in a manner that is not a drain on all of us. If these places are of such importance to local business success then my opinion is they should fund them. How about a charge for admission to these facilities? If these places are such the important draw for tourism as we are being led to believe then people should have no problem helping fund these wonderful places. If the calculations we are being quoted are accurate 100,000 per year over the past 20 years have visited, and if you were to charge a meager five bucks per person there's the 1/2 million operating budget per year, and at no cost to me. I find it hard to believe that people are going to come hundreds of miles and have five bucks break them so they cannot afford to spend at local businesses, so how about that for a reasonable solution. Hamilton-Essex BOCES. Odyssey of the Mind is an international program that encourages creative team-building and shared decision-making among students from Kindergarten through college. Minerva Central School has been participating in this program for many years – it combines creativity, thoughtfulness and teamwork. Six “long-term” problems were presented by teams from schools all over the BOCES area. The two Minerva teams tackled the “Food Court” problem, which was to create and present a humorous performance where a food item is accused of being unhealthy or bad in some way, and must defend itself among its food peers. A jury signals to the audience whether the accused is guilty or innocent in a team-created “trial”. The Minerva students worked on their problems and performances, preparing for several months to create props, costumes, and scripts. All creative ideas come from the students. Coach Sue Montgomery Corey, who has been coaching Odyssey teams at Minerva Central School for many years. “It encouraged students to realize their project ideas and dreams and keeping them on track,” she said of the program. “The results were terrific.” During the competition, each team had a maximum of eight minutes to present their problem and solution to a panel of Odyssey of the Mind judges. In addition to the long-term problem, the

teams were also given on-the-spot, spontaneous problems that they had to solve on their own – these are problems that they did not learn about until they were presented with them the day of the competition. Overall, the teams did well, although they did not come in first in their respective divisions. The first place teams in the Hudson Falls competition gained the opportunity to travel to Binghamton on March 27 to represent their region at the “States”, which includes teams competing from regions throughout New York State. MCS Division II team members included Steven Coletti, Danny Dunbar, Jacob Galusha, Black Piper, and Ryan Tucker. Division III team members included Toni Dunbar, Tara Galusha, Aleynah Gardinier, Tatsuki, Miyazato, Chirayu Ueawiriyanukun, Christopher O’Connor, and Chirayu Ueawiriyanukun (“Chi”). “These were great teams to coach, and we had a great run,” said Corey. A special thanks goes to MCS art teacher Patsy Sullivan for allowing the teams to use her art room for so much of the preparation time. Thanks, also, to Mrs. Lisa Fabin, Mrs. Heidi Kelly and the custodial staff at MCS and to the teachers and administration for all their support. A big thanks to the parents of these hard-working students for being flexible with schedules and doing what they could to make sure their kids made it to and from school for practices.

InBrief Minerva Day planning meeting scheduled MINERVA — It's now time to start planning for Minerva Day, 2010. There will be a planning meeting for the event on Wednesday, March 17 at 7 p.m. at the Minerva Town Hall, before the regular Minerva Park and Recreation meeting. All organizations and interested individuals are welcome to attend.

Japan From page 1 Tokarz was the first student to travel to another country. YFU is a non-profit educational organization, which offers opportunities for young people around the world to spend time with a host family in another culture with the help of scholarship monies. “Laura grew tremendously from her experiences,” said NCS Superintendent Skip Hults. “We have seen changes in maturity and confidence — both for the better.” Tokarz went through a crash course in Japanese with Shiori Takagi, an international student from Japan who has been attending NCS this year. After six weeks of intensive language learning, she was off to Japan. “Even with Shiori’s help it was so hard to communicate,” said Tokarz. “School was especially difficult.” Despite the language barrier, however, she found that education in Japan is similar to the education she receives in America. They take all the same classes, she said. Not everything was similar for Tokarz, however. She noticed some of the cultural differences right away. “They don’t hug,” she said. “It was weird for me to see friends never hug each other.” Tokarz is hopeful about any opportunity to return to Japan in the near future. “I would definitely go back,” she said. “It was an amazing experience to get to understand another culture.” Tokarz will make a presentation to the Newcomb School Board in the coming weeks about her travels. She brought her school uniform, yen, and magazines among other souvenirs from Japan to show off. She is eager to encourage other Newcomb students to take advantage of YFU. There is an upcoming opportunity for one student to spend a summer in Finland. “I would recommend it to anyone,” she said. “Being there is so much better than text book examples.” NCS Superintendent, Skip Hults noted that he is pleased that the YFU program is now a “two-way street” as Newcomb plans to send more students abroad. “My hope is that through people like Laura, we generate a long-term interest in the program,” said Hults.

Deer take way down in the northern zone

T

he poor deer take in the northern zone last season is no longer a rumor.

While hunters harvested 222,800 deer statewide during the 2009 season — nearly the same as 2008 — the deer take in the northern zone was down nearly 20 percent, state officials said last week. Even more telling was the buck take, which dropped from 20,726 in 2008 to 16,279 in 2009 — a drastic 27 percent reduction. The total deer take in the northern zone was 28,464 in 2009 compared to 33,938 in 2008. Some local hunting clubs estimate the take was down by 40 percent or more, the worst season they’ve seen in decades, and the numbers seem to follow my prediction of the deer take being lower in region’s hardest hit by the winters of 2007 and 2008. Take, for example, Warren, Essex and Hamilton counties. In 2007, hunters killed 1,192 bucks in Essex County, 964 in Hamilton County and 637 in Warren County. In 2008, that number rose to 1,244 bucks in Essex; 1,298 in Hamilton and 722 in Warren. But, in 2009, the take dropped drastically to 873 in Essex, 430 in Warren and just 510 in Hamilton — more than a 50 percent decline. All this means that if you tagged a buck last year, consider yourself in fortunate company. Some hunters have criticized the state’s policy against feeding deer saying it contributes to the mortality rate — especially during severe winters. But, wildlife officials say deer populations tend to be cyclical, and the herd is sure to rebound, especially after the mild conditions experienced this winter. The DEC also noted a motivating factor behind the feeding ban was to stop the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease, which was first detected in New York in 2005. The spread of CWD has, at least for now, been held in check. More than 30,000 deer have been tested since 2005, without one positive case of CWD found. State officials generally refute the argument there were less deer last year and instead blame the unusually warm November experienced by northern zone hunters for the poor take here. But, senior wildlife biologist Ed Reed said in some of Region 5, especially southern parts of the region, other factors contributed to the low deer take. “The past two winters in southern Hamilton County, Warren County, and northern Washington, Saratoga, and Fulton counties were harsher than average and we did experience some winter kill,” Reed said. “Also, in both of those winters, the deep snow came very early, well before the end of the regular season, causing some deer to begin moving toward wintering areas while hunting season was still

open, making them more vulnerable to hunters.” Some hunters are aware of deer migration routes and concentrate their efforts on those routes when the snow comes early, Reed said. “The increased buck harvest, as a result, will reduce the buck harvest the next year or two. For example, the 2008 buck harvest in Hamilton County was the highest since 1969, but, in 2009, it dropped off significantly.” The silver lining, Reed said, is the low harvest in 2009 coupled with this winter ’s mild weather should mean better deer numbers this fall. For a complete breakdown of the statewide deer take, including calculations by county and town, go to www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/42232.html.

Program aimed at improving balance In the interest of getting older folks up and enjoying outdoor activities, Adirondack guide Elizabeth Lee of Westport and Willsboro-based physical therapist and personal trainer Brian Trzaskos will team up to present a unique program to the public on balance, aging and outdoor living. The free event will be held this Tuesday, March 16, from 10:30 -11:30 a.m. at the Wallonsburgh Grange. People of all ages are encouraged to attend. Lee said the program will offer specific ideas and incentives for adults to resume outdoor activities they enjoy. Paramount to that, however, is a sense of security, she said. “I think a lot of older people have a real fear of falling and an uncertainty about safe terrain which keeps them from enjoying outdoor activities — especially during the winter months,” Lee said. At the March 16 program, Trzaskos will share in-depth knowledge of lifestyle patterns and physical dynamics which can improve balance and flexibility at all ages. Lee said she hopes many residents will attend and, in turn, feel more comfortable with pursuing an active lifestyle at any age. For more information, contact Lee at 962-4756 or lakeside5047@gmail.com. John Gereau is managing editor of Denton Publications and an avid outdoorsman. He can be reached at johng@denpubs.com.

Hornbeck From page 1 “We were told yesterday that there were, at most, 14 votes in support of the nomination,” said Dan Mac Entee, spokesman for Little. “The committee consists of 32 senators, so a vote would fall short of the amount needed to advance it to the Senate floor for consideration by the full body.” Paterson had nominated Hornbeck, a canoe builder and environmentalist from Olmstedville, for the seat held by Lake Placid businessman Arthur Lussi, who remains on the board even though his term expired June 30. In a March 4 press release, Little said many of her colleagues, both Republican and Democrat, have shared her concern over the ethical issues Hornbeck’s nomination posed. “This appointment raised a lot of concern locally and many North Country elected, political, business and civic leaders made that known to senators on both sides of the aisle,” said Little. Hornbeck is a member of Protect the Adirondacks!, an environmental organization that filed a lawsuit against the Adirondack Park Agency in January for its decision not to classify Lows Lake as Wilderness. The group has also opposed development projects in the park, namely the proposed resort at Big Tupper Ski Area. “A clear and compelling argument was made that Peter ’s affiliation as a member of the board of directors of an environmental group that had just sued the APA was not the right fit,” Little said. “It presented a conflict of interest.” Little led opposition to Hornbeck’s appointment in the Environmental Conservation Committee, which ultimately approved his nomination Feb. 22 despite concerns from many committee members. The committee’s chair, Antoine Thompson (D-Buffalo) said Paterson had called repeatedly in an attempt to expedite Hornbeck’s appointment. Jason Koppel, chief of staff to Senate Finance Committee Chairman Carl Kruger, said last week that Paterson’s choice of Hornbeck is undergoing an in-depth review following the conflict of interest claims. Koppel stressed the appointment is still under review and not officially defeated. He also noted that finance has hundreds of appointments on its docket and the approval process is backlogged several months. On Tuesday, finance approved 24 appointments, some dating back as far as April 2009. Hornbeck’s rejection would allow Lussi to remain in his seat until he or another nominee is approved. Little, together with many other local leaders, has been calling for his reappointment. “As I’ve said before, Art Lussi has done a good job in the one term he has served as an APA commissioner and a second term is something I’m confident many people would support,” Little said. WNBZ’s Jon Alexander contributed to this report

Denton Publications has openings for Advertising Sales Professionals. Primary responsibilities are building relationships in our community with both our advertisers and readers. We are looking for self starters eager to learn our business and share in the excitement of what we do. Individuals must have the ability to thrive in a fast paced environment, make cold calls, be self motivated, aggressive, have an outgoing personality, and be a team player. This is an opportunity to work for, and with, an independently owned company with an excellent business and financial reputation. Our only limits are the extent of the vision of our employees. Pay Based on experience. We offer a shared cost health insurance program, IRA, employer paid life insurance and vacation time. Experience helpful, but not necessary.
