Setback snarls Stec’s quest Ziegler beats Stec on his home turf By Jon Alexander denpubs@denpubs.com QUEENSBURY — Town Supervisor Dan Stec’s bid for a seat in Congress was dealt a blow Monday when Stec’s own Warren County Republicans chose a candidate from elsewhere — affiliated with the Tea Party movement — over their hometown supervisor. Stec lost the Warren County G.O.P. party endorsement to Patrick Ziegler of Burnt Hills by six votes. Chris Gibson of Kinderhook and David Harper of Saratoga Springs finished a distant third and fourth respectively. This four-way showdown in Warren County was the first of 10 county party endorsements in selecting a
Dan Stec candidate to challenge Democratic Congressman Scott Murphy in New York’s 20th District. Ziegler said Tuesday because of the current national political climate, health care is likely to drive much of the coming election.

Sap is running at Maple Knoll
Stewart’s Shop donates $1,000 to Youth Committee By Lindsay Yandon

MINERVA — It’s early March and the sap is running at the Klippel Sugar Camp at Maple Knoll Farm in Minerva. Eric Klippel and Selina LemayKlippel are hard at work making syrup – lots of it. In its second year of operation on 14th Road, the sap is being boiled with the sweet maple syrup, collected and bottled. The process is quite a sight to see. Maple Knoll Farm has about 120 buckets out on the sugar maple trees, with about 300 trees tapped into tubes, which run the sap down the hill to a pump house, where it is temporarily collected prior to its trip to the boiler in the sugar house. “We are preserving an Adirondack tradition – something that’s really needed,” said Klippel. Last year the farm made 32 gallons of syrup, based on around 200 tapped trees – this year there will be plenty more syrup made and available for sale at Maple Knoll Farm. The syrup is sold in
JOHNSBURG — Funds from the Stewart’s Holiday Match grant program have been awarded to the Town of Johnsburg Youth Committee in the amount of $1,000. The gift will be used to fund the committee’s various activities for the youth of Johnsburg. A substantial part of this award has been ear-marked for the promotion of swimming instruction, according to committee member, Kelly Nessle. “Teaching our young people to swim is an important part of the community,” she said. “Many may know how to doggy paddle, float, and tread water, but they have not mastered the various swimming strokes that allow one to swim with ease.” Nessle also addressed the issue of swimming availability. “It is hard to practice when there are no indoor swimming options in the winter,” she said. Some of the fund will be used during the summer youth program to this effect, but the committee is also investigating how to continue swim instruction throughout the year at accessible indoor pools.

Johnsburg takes their music on the road Eick honored for talent By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com
JOHNSBURG — Music students at Johnsburg Central School have recently been showcasing their talent in local communities. High school students were featured in the Central Adirondack School Music Association All-County Festival on March 5-6 at Indian Lake Central School and JCS junior, Caleb Eick was selected to participate in the New York State Summer School for the Arts Choral Studies program this summer. All-County festivals present an opportunity for students to play new music with fellow youth musicians and be introduced to different conductors. The experience aims to create a more well-rounded musician. “JCS was proud to have so many students participate in concert band, concert choir and the jazz bands portions of the festival,” said JCS music teacher, Mary Leach. “These festivals do make the students better musicians.” Eick was presented with the opportunity to conduct the combined band/choir finale as guest conductor. His All-County accomplishments did not stop

there, however, as he received an invitation to the Summer School for the Arts. Eick, son of Kim Eick of Johnsburg, was selected from many applicants from across the state to and will attend a four-week intensive program that focuses on vocal and choral techniques. “This is the premier summer arts program,” said Leach. “It is quite an honor for Caleb to be able to attend.” The program is sponsored by the New York State Education Department and is one step toward Eick’s goal of attending college in the field of musical studies.

North Creek chocolatier unveils one pound Easter egg truffle By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubscom
NORTH CREEK — Barkeater Chocolates in North Creek unveiled this week a one pound chocolate truffle in anticipation of Easter. “Easter is about reflection, celebration and being with people you love. To share a truffle much in the way you share a cake is the ultimate culmination of a good day,” said Barkeater owner, Deb Morris. To put a one pound chocolate truffle into perspective – it’s like eating more than 20 regular-sized Barkeater truffles. “Definitely something you shouldn’t try alone. Or at least in one sitting,” Morris added. Morris will offer the anticipated truffle in three varieties: dark chocolate, white chocolate and peanut butter. True to the Barkeater tradition, these truffles are all made with natural ingredients and high-end, quality gourmet chocolate. “The goal for the oversized Easter Egg Truffle was to create a delicious family tradition that people can look forward to year after

The expansion of moose from Maine and Canada across New England reached the state in the 1980's, and the population is now well established and self-sustaining. Thank you for your kindness
Question of the month:
To the News Enterprise: We wish to thank Fr. Sturtz, our family, friends, neighbors and relatives for the Mass cards, prayers, flowers, food, miscellaneous cards and other acts of kindness shown to us these past few weeks.
What is your favorite genre of books to read? I like robot books because I like C3PO and R2D2. I like outer space books because if you let go of your seatbelt you fly. Evan Anello - Kindergarten - Newcomb Central School I like to read Spider-Man books. I like Spider-Man so much. Alexander Thomas - Kindergarten - Johnsburg Central School My favorite genre is expository text because it helps me learn stuff about animals. I like “Animal Camouflage.” Devon Millington - Grade 2 - Johnsburg Central School My favorite genre is nonfiction because I learn things that are true. I learned that Madam C.J. Walker was a millionaire. Craig Bateman - Grade 3 - Johnsburg Central School My favorite genre is auto-biography or biography. I like these genres because I like hearing about famous athlete’s lives. Kagan Helms - Grade 3 - Newcomb Central School My favorite genre has changed over the years. When I was little I like to read about talking mice and flying treehouses. Now I read nonfiction. I have read many books about the Titanic. Reading these books helps me lean more and more about history. Eden Smith - Grade 4 - Johnsburg Central School My favorite genre and books to read are gold stories. I like them because they teach you a lesson. In “Racoon’s last Rave,” by Joseph Bruchac the lesson is not to brag. Some lessons can be very important when you’re older. Jordan Bush - Grade 5 - Newcomb Central School

Local library an asset To the News Enterprise: Soon after we moved to Long Lake, in 1998, I read the book “Stones From the River” by Ursula Hegi. It was such a thoughtprovoking book, that I longed to talk it over with other people who had also read it. I inquired at the library to see if there was a book club in existence. Since there wasn’t, the response was “Why don’t you start one?” An appeal for interested people was put out by the library, and an organizational meeting was held. In the last 12 years, it has grown and become an established organization in Long Lake. Because it is held at, and sponsored by the library, it is open to everyone. Present members are from Newcomb, Indian Lake, Tupper Lake and Blue Mountain Lake, as well as Long Lake. There are usually 12 to 20 present. While book discussion groups take many forms – some just a group of friends getting together over a shared meal to casually chat about a book they have all read – the one at the Long Lake Library tends to be well organized, with designated books and discussion leaders chosen for a year at a time. Books are chosen to represent a variety of genres. Discussions tend to be lively, thoughtful and sometimes scholarly, with different points of view encouraged. It fosters intelligent entertainment and a sense of community and common purpose for those attending. Meetings are held at the library from 5 – 6:30 p.m. every fourth Monday of the month. During the summer, the meeting time is 7:30 p.m. This is only one of the many benefits of having a library to serve the community. On May 18, there will be a vote to provide sustainable funding for our library. It will be on the ballot with the school budget vote, but will have nothing to do with the school funding. It will be solely for the library. As in any civilized country which votes to tax it’s citizenry for the common good, in this case we are dividing up the cost of running the library among the citizens of the Long Lake school district, so that each pays a relatively small amount, according to their means, as determined by assessed valuation of their property. In this way, we can be assured that the library will continue to be a thriving institution in our community with benefits for all. Informational meetings coming up are: Thursday, March 25 at 7 p.m. and Monday, April 26 at 11 a.m. - both at the Long Lake Library.

Marshall Johnson and Richard Kenwill succumbed to death by disease and starvation within 6 weeks of each other at the Confederate prisoner of war camp at Andersonville, Georgia. Special thanks to Trude Gezzi of North Creek for verifying these casualties of war in her copy of “Dedication of the NYS Monument at Andersonville, GA” (1914). With St. Patty’s Day upon us, it is also interesting to note that two of our solders listed this week, Holland and Kenwill, immigrated here from Ireland. t looked as if Feb. 2010 would continue the snowless trend set in January, but a large snowstorm at the end of the month pushed the snowfall total to an above average level. The month was also warmer than normal. The average high temperature was 31.1 degrees and the average low was 18.2 degrees, giving us an average temperature of 24.7 degrees - 3.8 degrees above normal. This was the fifth warmest in the last thirty years. The warmest Feb. was in 1984 when the average was 29 degrees, and the coldest was in 2005 when the average was 16.1 degrees. The coldest temperature of -7 degrees was recorded on the 1st and the warmest temperature of 40 degrees was recorded on the 22nd and the 27th. There was only one day with a below zero reading compared to an average of 6.5 days. This brings our seasonal total of below zero days to nine. Melted precipitation was 3.21 inches, - 0.8 inches above normal. There was measurable precipitation on eight days with the greatest amount of 3.12 inches, falling during the stormy period of the 23rd through the 26th. Our yearly total is now 5.60 inches - only 0.1 inch above normal. Snowfall was also above normal with 21.7 inches measured - 5.2 inches above normal. This brings our yearly total to 49.5 inches, which is 8.4 inches below normal for this time of year. The greatest amount of 15.5 inches was measured on the 24th and 25th. This was the second 10 inch or greater snowfall this season when the average for a season is one. This end-of-the-month storm also produced much higher amounts of snow in higher elevations in the surrounding area. The river reached its highest level of 3.87 feet on the 1st and its lowest level of 3.28 feet on the 23rd.

Stec From page 1 “What we really need is more competition instead of less — We need a clear set of laws and guidelines so insurance companies have strict set of guidelines,” Ziegler said. “But we also need to take out some of the more inane regulations that are preventing co-ops, that are preventing coming together as groups to drive down costs.” Last year, Murphy voted against the federal health care bill, but has remained relatively silent about his upcoming vote on the legislation, which is expected to see the House floor late this week. Warren County Republican Committee Chairman Mike Grasso wouldn’t say how close the vote tally was between Stec and Ziegler. But sources said Monday night Ziegler beat Stec by a six votes. Warren County Republicans are the first of the 10 county committees in the 20th district to throw its support behind a candidate. G.O.P officials from Essex and Washington counties attended Monday’s meeting in Queensbury, but they aren’t expected to make their formal endorsement for another two weeks. Sources said Ziegler wowed the committee with his understanding of the issues. Ziegler hammered Murphy for supporting cap-and-trade air pollution abatement policy, which he argued is driving jobs to China and Russia. Ziegler said he was shocked by the outcome, especially the fact he beat Stec in his hometown. “We are very confident in the people we have behind us and our platform in this election cycle,” Ziegler said. “I was very surprised we won in Warren because Dan Stec is an excellent candidate and a real good guy.” The remaining nine G.O.P committees in the district are expected to make their endorsements over the next several weeks. A call to Stec’s office wasn't answered by Tuesday noon, but area news media reported that Stec plans on remaining in the race, even after losing his home county. New York’s 20th Congressional District stretches from Essex County south to Dutchess County.

North Country Mission of Hope builds homes in Nicaragua OLMSTEDVILLE — For several years the parishioners of Saint Joseph's Church have conducted fund raising events with the proceeds given to the parish for specific needs. They contributed a large sum to the church when extensive renovations were done. Later they were able to refurbish old candle sticks and purchase Mass vestments and altar cloths. When the pastor, Father Sturtz, told the parishioners he was planning to join the group of North Country Mission of Hope volunteers who were soon to travel to Nicaragua, they asked if they might help him finance his trip. Instead he suggested that they might rather be interested in contributing to the building of a home shelter for a needy family. The people immediately agreed, for they had $650 -- enough to build a dwelling. Father Sturtz was informed by a member of the mission group that it is a custom to give the family receiving the needed home a picture of those who provided it for them. The family, he was told, reciprocate by praying everyday for their benefactors. Therefore, shortly before leaving for the mission trip, a photo was taken of the congregation gathered in Saint Joseph's sanctuary for that purpose. On the third day of his missionary trip to Nicaragua, Father Sturtz joined others to first go to pick up the materials for the 12 by 12 foot home shelter. After meeting Yader Vallecillo of Cedro Galan for whom the home was being built, other locals joined Yader and went immediately to work. Within two hours the home was completed, blessed by Father and a picture of Saint Joseph parish-

ioners given to the grateful owner of his new home. That same week the members of North Country Mission of Hope were present for home shelters built in memory of Bishop Cunningham and relatives and friends of other volunteers who had come on the trip with Father Sturtz. In spite of the shortening of the mission trip due to air flight delays because of a snow storm that blanketed the east coast of the United States, all the homes that were scheduled to be built were completed. Since the Mission of Hope began the program of providing homes for Nicaraguan families, over 600 home shelters have been built. Marty Mannix, a regular participant of the Mission, has supervised the con-
struction of all but 100 of the dwellings. He has seen that the program has developed to the point that now a special committee of Nicaraguans decide who are most in need of a proper shelter. In fact some people have had to wait two or more years before a home was available. Marty stated that those receiving home shelters must be involved in the construction under the supervision of Inocencio Velasquez, a member of the local junta who works with the home shelters projects. Furthermore, the people must assist in the building of other homes as well. It is the prayer of all that some day soon people residing in the barrios of Chiquilistagua will all have fitting dwellings to call home.

Syrup From page 1 containers ranging from pints to full gallons. Klippel has been tapping trees for commercial sale since 1984, when the Sugar Camp was located on Bird Pond Road in the Town of Chester. He eventually sold the property with its sugar bush (a sugar bush is a woodlot of sugar maple trees) and has since built a sugaring operation in Minerva. He and Lemay-Klippel (who helps with the operation and makes spectacular homemade doughnuts) have constructed a beau-
tiful facility on an actual maple treed knoll. Maple sugaring is a passion for the couple. “I love being in the woods, and helping to make a natural product such as this is something I truly enjoy,” said Klippel. It takes about 40 gallons of sugar maple sap to make a single gallon of syrup. When the operation is running full-tilt, a lot of hardwood is burned to sustain the boiler fire in order to evaporate the water component of the sap. What’s distilled out is a fine golden-colored sweet syrup that is pretty indescribable in its maple sweetness. “It takes a lot of work,” said Lemay-Klippel. “It’s truly a labor of love.”

Big pike caught in Schroon derby; fur prices on the rise
I
t was a record breaking turnout for the 18th annual Schroon Lake Fish and Game Club ice fishing derby March 6 - 7, with 567 people coming out to participate under warm sunny skies. Unfortunately fishermen weren’t the only ones being warmed by the 50 degree midday sun. Unseasonable ice conditions followed and the event was marked by a truck, Jeep and 4-wheeler plunging through the ice just south of the narrows. Thankfully, no one was hurt and the competition continued. When it was all said and done, Jeremiah Millington of Warrensburg had bragging rights with a nearly 20-pound northern he said he caught “somewhere on the lake.” The fish measured 43 inches. Other first place fish included a 8.65 pound, 30-inch laker caught by Mike Winters of Gansevoort; a 2.63 pound, 20-inch landlock caught by Jerry Smith III of Schroon Lake; a 1.5 pound perch caught by David Disonell, Sr. of Hannacroix and a 4.2 pound, 26-inch pickerel caught by Richard Wagner of Avon, CT. The remaining contest winners included: • Northern Pike — Brian Hall of Bolton Landing, second place with 9.04 pounds and 33 inches. Third place went to Kevin Duntley of North Hudson with 8.11 pounds and 32 inches. • Lake Trout — Second place went to Darrell Clark of Schroon Jeremiah Millington of Warrensburg caught this Lake with 7.23 pounds 19.64 pound, 43-inch Northern Pike during the and 28 3/4 inches and Schroon Lake Fishing Derby March 6-7. The Schroon Lake Class of 2012 50-50 raffle was won by Chris Meduri of Schroon Lake and the Fish and Game Club 50-50 raffle was won by Brandon Stuart of Townsend, MA. Club president Don Sage said the club would like to thank all the volunteers, donators, and contestants who contributed to making this a very successful and enjoyable weekend. “We invite everyone back to next year's, the 19th derby, held on the first weekend of March, and bring your friends. Hope to see you all next year. Visit us online at www.schroonlakefishandgameclub.com,” he said.
Fur prices on the mend As a kid growing up in the Adirondacks, my mornings before school and my evenings after were consumed with the outdoors. I ran a rather extensive trapline for beaver, otter, mink and muskrat as well as land animals like fox and coyote. It served as a great deterrent to some of the mischief other kids were getting involved in and, at times, proved quite lucrative. “The best thing about trapping is you’ll always have a buck in your pocket,” my uncle Ed used to say. Unfortunately, those days became a thing of the past. Fur prices dropped so low, that I couldn’t justify taking the animal for what trappers were being paid. I was never in it for the money, but the fur prices were downright insulting. It now appears that is changing. Fur prices are slowly climbing closer to what they were 20 years ago. Here is a glimpse at how much fur was selling for on average in February, according to the Fur Harvesters Association. Muskrat was the real highlight, selling at an $8.50 average. Beaver pelts landed at $21 each with a high of $72 and a low of $14, while raccoon held ranges of $13-$22 based on grading. Coyote prices came in at the $30-$35 range — a 36 percent increase over last year — and eastern red fox rose noticeably above last season's levels to $31. Grey fox performed well, gaining buyer attention at $20 each. Otter, one of the most poorly performing pelts over the past few seasons, returned to acceptable pricing at an average of $42. Fisher remained a popular item for buyers, with a typical fur selling at $62. John Gereau is managing editor of Denton Publications and an avid outdoorsman. He can be reached at johng@denpubs.com.
