Wilderness First Aid — critical skills for everyone By Mike Corey denpubs@denpubs.com

Will cover building use fees By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK — The Tannery Pond Community Center Association (TPCCA) recently made a decision to offer funding assistance to regional organizations who wish to use the community center facilities through grant opportunities. When the town of Johnsburg acquired the building several years ago, officials were paying upward of $50,000 a year in utility and maintenance costs. To try and ease the strain on tax dollars, the town board put into effect a usage charge for organizations who wanted to use the facility. “It came to my attention that many people would like to use the facility, but were not able to afford the fees,” said Wes Dingman, TPCCA member. In an effort to respect the efforts of the town board and to make usage of the building more affordable, the TPCCA board drafted a grant application for regional organizations to use to apply for assistance in covering the cost of the building use. “Small organizations that might wish to sponsor a debate, show a film, stage a play, hold a musical recital, or other event have found it difficult to raise the money to rent the space,” said Dingman. The grant application is simple and is offered to organizations throughout the Adirondack region, not just in the town of Johnsburg. The TPCCA is a local nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the community

NORTH CREEK — Imagine taking a hike in the backcountry when a fellow hiker slips on a wet rock, falls, and comes up with a possibly fractured bone. It is important to know what to do to help ease the pain and make sure that person gets out of the woods safely. This is a scenario that could produce a lot of anxiety for all concerned. The eight-hour Wilderness First Aid class presented at the Tannery Pond Community Center on Sunday, March 21 was very useful in preparing for these kinds of events. Instructor Rick Morse facilitated a very hands-on, interactive and practical training that provided plenty of information for all trainees. The class, which follows the standards of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, had nine eager participants. “It’s been very helpful – I’ll definitely be able to use this information,” said Chuck Wilkison, one of the class participants. The focus of the class was on what to do in the backcountry in terms of first aid, but it also contained an abundance of useful information for dealing with common first aid situations anywhere they may be encountered. The term “backcountry” refers to being more than an hour away from definitive medical care, as opposed to “frontcountry,” which could be located on a ball-field, roadside, or backyard, for example. Each student in the class received a copy of the

Minerva students learn the ways of sugaring By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com THURMAN — Maple sugar weekends are well under way in Thurman and a group of Minerva Central School pre-kindergarten students recently saw first hand what it takes to bring the sweet treat to their tables. The class was invited by Mike Hill of Valley Road Maple Farm in Thurman to learn about the process of making maple syrup. Among the students that visited the farm was Hill’s grandson, Tristan. “It was great to have that connection and to be able to send the class to visit the farm and observe the actual process,” said Minerva Central School Principal Heidi Kelly. Hill and his partners welcomed the students to tap their own maple tree and guided them through the entire hands-on process of

Wilderness First Aid Field Guide, a compact and valuable guide to first aid for everything from abdominal pain to cardiac arrest to insect bites and stings to waterborne diseases. Additionally, trainees earned a Wilderness First Aid card, which is good for three years and is recognized by the NYS DEC as fulfilling the first aid requirements for guides. Participants operated in teams to work through different hands-on scenarios that could be encountered out in the backcountry, including snakebites, broken bones, concussion, bee stings, hypoglycemia, severe lacerations, etc. They used their own first aid kits and collaborated with others when the situation called for something different or creative. Morse felt strongly about the importance of practicality. “It’s hands-on practice – you definitely get the most out of applied learning situations,” he said. This first training was available for Johnsburg Youth Commission TREKS volunteers, but additional courses this coming spring and summer will be open to others as well, according to Morse. If interested in the TREKS program or additional training, contact Rick Morse at 494-4094 or morses2@gmail.com. Thank you to the Tannery Pond Community Center for offering up the space for the class and also to the Johnsburg Rescue Squad for loaning its manikins for CPR practice.

Local businesses ask reps to designate Adirondack Park a special economic zone By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK — The Gore Mountain Regional Chamber of Commerce began circulating a draft letter to local businesses this week, asking state legislatures to designate the Adirondack Park as a special economic zone. At this time, the governor and legislature are reviewing proposals for economic development programs to replace the NYS Empire Zones Program, which may expire in June 2010. The program offers tax incentives to businesses that are located in specified empire zone areas and are making investments that lead to the creation of jobs. The Adirondack Common Ground Alliance is proposing that the Adirondack Park be designated an Excelsior Zone to

support businesses located within the park. The letter requests support from lawmakers to create an economic development zone and joins forces with the Adirondack Common Ground Alliance. Aside from the economic zone delineation, the Common Ground Alliance recommends providing necessary gap financing for development projects within the Adirondack Park and providing financing needed to improve infrastructure within the Adirondack Park. The Common Ground Alliance is a forum for public and private collaboration. They work to recognize the common good of the communities, residents and resources of the Adirondack Park rather than specific organizational, institutional, or individual agendas. “We wanted to express our support for what the Common Ground Alliance is try-

ing to do,” said chamber president Dave Bulmer. The local chamber acknowledges the special economic needs of the businesses and developers in the Adirondack Park and hope to see an economic development plan to address these needs. Many businesses within Johnsburg and the surrounding areas benefit from the tax incentives of the NYS Empire Zones Program. The chamber recognizes that businesses within the Adirondack Park have issues and needs that are specific to this area and want to ensure that these businesses are not left behind just because they are located inside the blue line. “Downstate legislatures often forget about the Adirondack Park,” said Bulmer. “We are not just a park and we need to make it evident that there are opportunities for development.”

Stewart's Shops support Adirondack Museum programs for schools

BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE — The Adirondack Museum has received a donation in the amount of $500 from Stewart's Holiday Match Program, in support of the museum's resources for area schools and educators. The funds will be used to provide scholarship assistance to schools that may financially be unable to visit the Adirondack Museum. The museum offers extensive educational opportunities to local schools including a lumberjack learning program. The museum is both rich in learning as well as conveniently located. “We are always trying to improve our educational programs in order to attract local schools to take advantage of what we have to offer,” said Susan Dineen, director of marketing for the museum.

Stewart's is based in Saratoga Springs and has a long-standing commitment to “giving back” to the community. The company contributes approximately 5 percent of their profits annually and donated $2,250,000 to regional organizations in 2009. Stewart's Shops has a special interest in children, their education, and their recreation. Stewart's Shops have collected and matched donations in their shops from Thanksgiving until Christmas each year since 1986. In the past year, they received a record number of applications, more than 1,400, requesting over $3.1 million in assistance. They allocated a total of $1,261,800. The company credits the success of the Holiday Match Program to their customers who make generous contributions, and to dedicated shop partners who diligently collect funds. North Creek welcomes Canadian skiers To the News Enterprise: For another year, we have welcomed the group of travelers from Canada to our town for Canadian ski week. I am sure that our local businesses appreciate the boost to our economy, and I am happy to see people coming to experience our little corner of the world. I was also glad to see that the ratio of American to Canadian flags displayed has risen this year. Perhaps in the next year, all that fly flags welcoming our guests shall also proudly display our own American flag. Last year, it was pointed out to me that there were fewer American flags than others. I must admit that I was errant in this also, so I made it a point to take the time with my son to purchase a flag, and he helped me to raise the colors of our nation. I know that I do not follow all the rules regarding the treatment and display of our flag to the letter, but do strive to treat it with the respect that I was raised to show it. If anyone wants information on the proper etiquette and care of Old Glory; local government offices, VFW posts, or the American Legion are suggested as places that may help. Also, you might visit such websites as capitolflags.com/flag-etiquette.html to learn more, including proper folding techniques.

Don’t miss the JCS student exhibit at TPCC To the News Enterprise: If you haven't seen the Johnsburg Central School's art classes exhibit at Tannery Pond Community Center, you are missing a wonderful experience. This exhibit will be there through March 31. We can all be proud of these talented kids. We are also particularly proud of Maria Glode, who is their art teacher for all grades K-12. She has performed an amazing job, first of all, for her interesting and varied art program and then for preparing this volume of work for display. Maria is an example of those teachers who work extra hard and are such a credit to the teaching profession. How fortunate we are to have such a talented, energetic teacher for our kids. Johnsburg Goes to War: 1861-1865 I

have been asked if we had any famous men from Johnsburg that fought in the war. One who might contend for that title was John Millington of Harrington Road in Wevertown. While serving as a trooper with the 16th NY Cavalry, Millington and 22 others (10 of which were from the Adirondacks) pursued, captured and killed John Wilkes Booth, assassin of President Abraham Lincoln. They also captured Booth’s accomplice, David Herold and brought him back to Washington DC, where Herold and the other conspirators were hung. After the war, Millington moved west and ultimately settled in Portland, Oregon, where he died in 1914 after a three year battle with cancer. This past Feb. the “Oregon Magazine” featured a full article on Millington as a local celebrity. In preparation of my Sept. 2011 Tannery Pond Community Center Presentation I’d appreciate hearing if you have any pictures, diaries or information on John Millington or the men in this week’s column or from prior columns. Please contact me at 2153009 or pearsall.glenn@gmail.com.

As a 16 year old he enlisted the first year of the war on Dec. 4, 1861 for three years as a private in Co. E of the 93rd NY Volunteer Infantry. Came down with Typhoid Fever and furloughed home. Returned to his regiment only to become ill again. Because of his illness he was discharged from the 93rd on Feb. 27, 1863 - his 18th birthday. Recuperated at home and then that July later signed on as a trooper with Co. H of the 16th NY Cavalry. As a quickly assembled detachment of cavalry, 20 year old Millington helped to pursue, capture and kill John Wilkes Booth. Discharged Sept. 21, 1865.

Before leaving Valley Road Maple Farm, the students were treated to vanilla ice cream topped with maple syrup. Gore Mountain hosts big air contest at the North Creek Ski Bowl By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com

Scholar athletes announced By Lindsay Yandon

NORTH CREEK— Both local and visiting contestants met at the North Creek Ski Bowl over the weekend to show off their tricks at Gore Mountain’s Big Air Contest. Both 16 and over and 15 and under men and women contestants came out to ride or ski in the spring conditions and to show off the skills they have been sharpening all season on the mountain. “Conditions were very spring-like but everything held in really nicely,” said Gore Mountain marketing director Emily Stanton. Jake Monaco of Mahopac claimed first place in the 15 and under snowboard division, while Bryant Demarsh of Warrensburg won the 16 and over division. Matt Hayden of North Creek came out on top of the 15 and under skier division and Hank Evatt of Sabael won the 16 and over division. Kayla Pesta of Waterford was the lone women’s contest on skis. The event drew a respectable turn-out considering the weather that was moving in on Sunday evening, according to Stanton. “All the contestants were really excited and gave us a great event,” she said. North Creek was well-represented by both contestants and spectators. Many without direct involvement in the event came to watch and enjoy the bonfire and music that followed competition. Events at the North Creek Ski Bowl are a snapshot of the roll it will play in the current interconnect project. “Having events at the bowl really boosts the community spirit surrounding the project,” said Stanton.

Will ice out be early this year? Anglers await open water opportunities

D

espite a recent spell of sunny skies and warm weather, it’s never safe to pronounce that winter has finally expired in the Adirondacks. However, to date, average temperatures for the month of March have been about 10 degrees above normal, while rainfall has been far below average. I expect the normal weather will eventually catch up to us, but hopefully it won’t arrive during the annual spring break. Trees are beginning to sprout buds and flies are in The arrival of budding pussythe air. In my backyard, the willows are a reliable signal pussywillows are out, which that open brook trout waters usually indicates that ice out are close at hand. can't be far behind. It would be nice to access the ponds while a snowpack remains. I’d far prefer to skid my boat over the snow, than haul it several miles overland on my back. All we need are just a few days of sunshine and 60 degree weather, combined with some heavy rains, and the trout season will be off to it’s earliest start in recent memory.

Bell’s Regret

while satellite phones have expanded it beyond earthly bounds and into space. Sadly, in the current day, cell phones have indeed become one of the most popular children’s toys. They have moved far beyond the intended purpose of simple communication, and are now used primarily as an entertainment device. Telephone communications have advanced so rapidly and have become so pervasive that it is almost impossible to escape their presence. And while there are a number of local communities that haven’t been breached or reached via a new cell tower, the numbers are very few. For the remainder, my advice is to be careful what they wish for. Last summer, on the summit of Mt. Marcy, I witnessed a gentleman screaming into a cell phone while making dinner reservations. On another occasion, the deafening silence of the still afternoon was shattered as a kid on the opposite shore of a backwoods pond shared his cell phone conversation with every camper in the area. While I fully understand the essential elements of safety that a complete network of cell coverage provides, I can’t escape their invasiveness. Quite simply, there should remain certain places on this earth where a person can’t be reached and where cellular communications can’t intrude. Beyond the fact that rude behavior knows no bounds, the fact that civilization can now encroach upon even the wildest areas on earth, makes these areas less wild, maybe even tame. In 1878, Bell wrote, “It is possible to connect every man's house, office or factory with a central station, so as to give him direct communication with his neighbors.” Years later, Bell came to realize the errors of his ways. Eventually, he determined that civilization shouldn’t be permitted to encroach everywhere. At the time he had already founded Science magazine and was the president of the National Geographic Society. He had been hard at work in an attempt to develop flying and although he had amassed over 3,000 patents beyond his original, the telephone had finally palled on him. On his seventy-fifth birthday, Bell stunned the world when he disclosed that he did not have a telephone in his own study. Further, he announced that there was no telephone in the Coconut Grove home of his daughter-in-law, where he spent winters working on fresh inventions. When questioned why he refused to have a phone, Bell explained that he regretted the fact that he was responsible for an invention he considered, “the greatest single intrusion of an individual’s privacy ever invented.” Years later, due to concerns over his failing health, he finally permitted a phone to be installed at his estate in Nova Scotia. However, he directed the phone could only be installed in the garage, so that he wouldn’t be subject to the “device’s infernal ring.” On Aug. 2, 1922, Alexander Graham Bell died. He is buried at his estate, Beinn Bhreagh, in Nova Scotia. I wonder what the great inventor would think of today’s cell phones, which are surely no longer, “a toy, that no child would be interested in.”

“Leave the beaten track occasionally and dive into the woods. Every time you do so you will be certain to find something that you have never seen before. Follow it up, explore all around it, and before you know it, you will have something worth thinking about to occupy your mind. All really big discoveries are the results of thought.” The above quote comes from a young Alexander Graham Bell, who sat in the gardens of his family home in Brantford, Ontario on a warm summer day in July 1874 staring at the Grand River. It was a day that inspiration struck and Bell finally grasped the principle on which his most famous invention, the telephone, would work. Two years later, on February 14, 1876, Bell’s patent application for the telephone was filed at the United States Patent Office. He was granted the first telephone patent, U.S. Number 174,465, on his twenty-ninth birthday. It has been called the most valuable patent ever issued. Three week’s later on March 10, 1876 the first intelligible human voice was heard over a telephone, as Bell called to Watson, “Mr. Watson. Come here. I want to see you.” On a subsequent visit to his parent’s home in Ontario, later that same year, Bell completed one of the three crucial public demonstrations to prove that the telephone was a practical form of communication. His invention would reshape the world. In 1878, Rutherford B. Hayes was the first US president to have a telephone installed in the White House. His first call was conducted with Alexander Graham Bell, who was waiting for the call some 13 miles away from the White House. Decades later, on Jan. 25, 1915, Bell participated in the formal opening of the first transcontinental telephone line by talking on the telephone in New York to the same Mr. Watson in San Francisco. Watson and Bell’s initial telephone conversation of 1876 was transmitted a total distance of just 20 feet. By 1915 it spanned a continent and Bell lived to see the telephone deJoe Hackett is a guide and sportsman residing in Ray Brook. liver speech across the Atlantic and from Washington to Contact him at brookside18@adelphia.net. Honolulu without wires. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, March 3, 1847, Bell immigrated to Canada in 1870 for health reasons, after his brother ’s death of tuberculosis two years earlier. Bell arrived with his parents, and his sister-in-law, Carrie Bell, and settled in Brantford, Ontario. Reportedly, he developed the phone to help family members, who suffered from hearing problems. At the time, his father-inlaw did not agree with Bell’s efforts. He claimed the device would simply be a toy and that “no child would be interested in playing with it.” However, since Bell’s death in 1922, the telecommunication industry has undergone an amazing revolution. pril 1 may mark the official opening of trout season in these parts, but any wily veteran will tell you your chances of actually getting out on a pond that early are about as good as Tiger Woods staying monogamous. Well, alas, this year I truly believe will be different — but perhaps not as different as you might think. I took a stroll last weekend into a couple of my favorite ponds in the Pharaoh Lake Wilderness Area and found they looked like this (yes, that’s solid ice covering the pond from shore to shore):

Aside from an opening at the outlet and signs of decay around boulders which got warmed by the mid-day sun, this particular pond looked nearly identical last year at this time. I know, I was there. And it wasn’t fishable until April 15. One of the most useful tools in my brook trout fishing arsenal has been a log my brother and I keep that details information like when ice out occurs on a particular pond, as well as when fish seem to hit best and on what. What I’ve found is that ice out rarely varies much from one year to the next — at least not wildly. Certainly the ice covering may be gone a week early this year (at least if this recent cold snap breaks) but I doubt it will be any earlier than that. I plan to head back in again this weekend and will keep you apprised of what I find. I can guarantee you that if there is fishable water on April 1, I’ll be taking advantage of it. I’ve already cleaned every reel to a spit shine and replaced my line three times. I’m like a kid at Christmas this time of year. The warmer-than-usual month of March may speed up the DEC’s stocking efforts as well, especially in local rivers and streams that are often more accessible than backcountry ponds. The Boquet River, for example, is infused with 5,220, 8-9 inch brookies in the spring right here in E-town along with hundreds of browns, and the AuSable gets loaded with thousands of browns, brookies and rainbows in Keene and Jay. For a complete list of waters to be stocked by the state this spring, visit http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/30465.html. Once there, you can click on the appropriate county of interest.

InBrief Depot Museum announces grant award NORTH CREEK — The North Creek Depot Museum is pleased to announce a $2,000 grant award from the Rivendell Foundation of North River. The Rivendell Foundation, Inc. is a private family foundation established in 2001 by Elise and Woody Widlund to continue the family tradition of commitment to enhancing the quality of life of the community through grants to qualified charitable organizations. The funds awarded to the museum will go toward the revision of the museum’s ski exhibit. In honor of the institution’s 10 year anniversary, a dedicated group of volunteers are redesigning the current ski exhibit to include a time line of the North Creek skiing industry from its inception during the 1930s up to present day with the anticipation of the Gore Mountain interconnect. The exhibit is slated to open in early July. More details to follow on what is to be a festive event.

Workshop offered at Paul Smiths College PAUL SMITHS — On Saturday, May 8 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., join professional ecological designer and educator Keith Morris for a day-long exploration of the potential for permaculture design to contribute to ecological regeneration and greater food security in the Adirondack region. The program will be at Paul Smith's College and the cost for the program is $25. Lunch is not included, but can be purchased at campus dining on the day. You should bring a notebook, gloves and a bag lunch, if you don't wish to purchase one on campus. Registration is required. The deadline for registration is April 24. Please contact Tom Huber, Director - TRiO Student Support, thuber@paulsmiths.edu or call 327-6330.
