Titanic to set sail at Indian Lake Theater By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com INDIAN LAKE — The Indian Lake Theater will offer movie-goers much more than just a viewing of Titanic on Saturday, April 24. In conjunction with the Adirondack Not-for-Profit Network’s (ANN) first annual “Celebrating the Good Works” house parties, the Indian Lake Theater will be re-creating, in part, the Titanic’s fateful voyage on April 10, 1912 from the port of Southampton, UK. “We are very pleased to offer this ‘themed’ evening while celebrating local not-for-profit organizations,” said theater director Patricia Connor. Beginning at 6 p.m., “passengers” who have purchased “boarding passes” will enter the theater to dine on dishes offered on the April 10 menu, such as oysters, salmon and foie gras as served in the First Class dining room on the Titanic. Second Class samplings will include cold asparagus, curried chicken and roasted turkey. Third Class or steerage travelers were expected to bring most of their own food, but the kitchen will provide Irish stew or ragout of beef and bread and butter. “We hope the evening gives people a snapshot of what it was like to board and live on the Titanic as it sailed the open sea 98 years ago,” said Connor. Along with luxury liner cuisine, music and newsreels will be playing during cocktails and dinner. At 7:30 p.m., the Titanic will set sail once again on the big screen. During the intermission, coffee and dessert, such as Waldorf pudding and cheese and fruit will be served. In keeping with the evening's theme, “passengers” are requested to dress in the attire appropriate for the class of boarding pass they have purchased. Tiaras and tuxedoes for

NORTH CREEK — The Johnsburg Central School Music Department received a mixed blessing last weekend when the popularity of their presentation of the Broadway musical “Bye Bye Birdie” forced them to turn some spectators away. Rave reviews came from those exiting the gymnasium on both evenings of the performance. The show starred Caleb Eick as Albert Peterson, Casandra Prouty as Rose Alverez, Margaret Welz as Mae Peterson, Chelsea Bromley as Kim MacAfee, Ben Richards as Harry MacAfee, Mikayla Glode as

Heavy flooding closes roads in Johnsburg

piece,” said Leach. “It really required a whole cast of talented kids to pull it together and they did it.” Leach acknowledged that these plays really do take a whole village to be successful. Faculty, staff, parents and volunteers all helped to make the evenings come to fruition, she said. Auditions were held in December and rehearsals began in January for the two performances. “Everything went smoothly in the months leading up to the productions and the students performed very well,” said Leach. “They all worked so hard.” This was “Bye Bye Birdie’s” return debut at JCS. The play was also performed there in 1980. Many of the students who performed in this year ’s production have parents who were in the original musical. “It was nice to be able to look back on the past production and have the students discuss their parts with their own parents,” said Leach. “I hope this stirred up some good old memories and also made some new ones.”

By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com JOHNSBURG — Highway crews in the town of Johnsburg have been working tirelessly all week to reopen the nearly 15 roads closed in the town due to heavy flooding from last week’s rain. All are passable again with the exception of the bridge on Harrington Road, which will be closed indefinitely pending more attention from road crews and engineers, according to highway superintendent Dan Hitchcock. “The highway crew put in a lot of great work to get everything back open,” said Johnsburg Supervisor Sterling Goodspeed. The town of Johnsburg received between two and four inches of rain over the past week according to National Wether Service sources. Flooding was seen throughout North River, Garnet Lake and Harrington Road along Route 8, according to Goodspeed. “I have never seen this amount of flooding in such a small time period,” he said. “Water covered Route 8 at one point.” The bridge on Harrington Road washed out after the creek that it crosses overflowed. Eileen Sharp of Harrington Road lost power to her home and had over four feet of water in her basement as a result of the flooding. The Harrington Road bridge has washed out three times over last several years and the town of Johnsburg is looking for ways to replace it altogether, according to Hitchcock. “This is the worst it’s ever been,” said Sharp.

Local museums to host special event NORTH CREEK - The North Creek Depot Museum and the Adirondack Museum are jointly hosting a nonprofit event on Saturday, April 24 from 8 - 11 p.m. at the Tannery Pond Community Center. The party is part of a larger effort across the Adirondacks called “Celebrating the Good Works!” developed by the Adirondack Nonprofit Network (ANN) and North Country Public Radio (NCPR.) On that evening, organizations will host events around the region, and NCPR will broadcast a special music program during which participating organizations will be featured with onair mentions and brief call-in segments. The goal of the night is simple: To increase awareness of nonprofit organizations and the good works they do within the Adirondack North Country Region. The party in North Creek will feature live music, food and drink, and is free to attend. Nonprofit organizations in the Town of Johnsburg area interested in partnering with the museums are encouraged to call Michelle San Antonio at 251-5842 by April 16 to reserve a spot.

There is no charge, but donations to the Art & Nature Camp Scholarship Fund are welcomed. Art & Nature Camp will be held June 29-July 27, with 3 separate sessions for children (4-6, 7-12, and 10 and up). Brochures are available at the Johnsburg library, TPCC, and shops and community boards around town. Call Kate Hartley at 251-2235 for more information.

It’s About Thyme Farm sponsor Easter Egg hunt MINERVA — It's About Thyme Farm of Olmstedville is sponsoring a free Easter Egg Hunt at the Minerva Central School on Saturday, April 3. Pictured here is the bridge on Harrington Road that was closed do to damage caused by heavy flooding in the Town of Johnsburg over the past week. Photo by Sally Lawrence

Engineers have been consulted regarding the stability of the bridge and how to best repair it. Hitchcock is looking for ways to reroute Harrington Road and avoid the bridge making use of road that is not on the floodplain. This process, however, will take months and Harrington Road is not expected to be open again until then. Much of the flooding on Harrington Road was increased by a beaver dam that gave way on Austin Pond. With continued rain, highway crews are still working to secure roads and return stability to many flooded section. “We are still checking seasonal and local roads, but we are making progress,” said Hitchcock.

TPCCA announces small grants to regional organizations NORTH CREEK — The Tannery Pond Community Center Association (TPCCA) is offering small grants to qualifying local and regional organizations to cover the cost of their use of Tannery Pond Community Center ’s stage and auditorium. They will consider paying the fee for these types of events for local and regional organizations who provide a completed, one page, grant application at least one month prior to the time they expect to hold the event. The TPCCA will respond to these applications within 10 days. Events that are not open to the public (or a broad spectrum of the public) or that are held for a single political candidate/party or a single sectarian cause would not qualify for this support. BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE — Many people today are unaware that Adirondack river log drives began on the little river of Schroon in 1813. Thousands of logs once floated down the Schroon to the Hudson River and mills beyond. On Sunday, April 11, 2010, Mike Prescott, a New York State Licensed Guide, will offer a program entitled “Armchair Paddlers' Guide to the Schroon River” at the Adirondack Museum. The presentation is the last of Cabin Fever Sunday series for the season. “The history of human interaction with the Schroon River is rich with stories of logging, industry, tourism, and community development,” said museum marketing director, Susan Dineen. “We are very excited to offer this program in order to tell those stories.” Mike Prescott is a retired secondary school principal and NYS Licensed Guide. He spent three summers working with the Adirondack Cooperative Loon Program and has logged many hours observing and photographing loons. He spent thirty-four years working with young people, first as a history teacher and then as a secondary school principal. “I have always found nature to be healing and rejuvenating,” he said. “Especially the history of the lakes, rivers, and streams of the Adirondacks.” “The Armchair Paddlers' Guide to the Schroon River” will be illustrated with vintage photos and postcards, as well as contemporary photography that shows what a paddler today would experience along the river. The Schroon River is more than 60 miles in length, part of the Hudson River Watershed that flows south to the At-

SATURDAY April 3, 2010

Intermediate skier braves a new world I

t was a beautiful Sunday afternoon on the last day of February at Gore. Everything felt good. Everything felt under control. After several feet of fresh snow, the slopes were in excellent shape. My ski companion, Gary Pless and I had just gotten off the new quad lift at the top of Burnt Ridge Mountain and had a decision to make - a run down one of the familiar trails (either Echo or Sagamore), or have an adventure and look for the short trail that connects with Twister to bring us back to the triple chair at the base lodge. It looked like an easy ski and we headed off down the trail. We came across some advanced student skiers with their instructor, who were all about to ski through the trees via the Tahawus Glades. These glades lead north to Tahawus, a beautiful “blue square” trail on the mountain’s north side, recently opened up because of the substantial fresh snow. Just beyond the glades skiers, we came to a roped-off area (likely the new connector to Twister), and a trail that went off into the woods. Skiers coming out of the woods on this trail stated in no uncertain terms that we could not ski the wrong way on this trail. The only way to get back down to the base lodge was to either remove our skis and walk back up to the top of the Burnt Ridge lift, or ski through the Tahwaus Glades. I have been skiing for about eight years and I have pur-

posely avoided all glades, which tend to attract really good skiers. When we decided to head down through the Tahawus Glades, panic began to wash over me – this glades thing was something completely new and scary for me, but not for Gary. We began to follow the tracks of previous skiers and the view was beautiful, but I was a little terrified. I soon found out why glades have a black diamond label - trees were everywhere. Once en route, the commitment was made. While Gary headed nimbly off through the trees with no problem, I made little short sweeping Sshapes between the trees, stopping to catch my breath, getting my bearings, then continuing. Finally, I met Gary at the end of the glades and the bottom of the Tahawus Trail. I was exhausted, but thoroughly pleased with myself for having skied, unscathed, through a real glades. It was a great feeling, and made the rest of the day of skiing all the nicer. I did not, however, accidentally or otherwise find myself skiing down any more glades trails that afternoon. My lesson for the day: try something new and maybe even a little risky, something that challenges you. It’s good to push the envelope. Mike Corey is a contributing writer to the News Enterprise.

Enjoy each and every day.

istorical research can quickly turn into playing detective. The Official Town of Johnsburg Enrollment Records indicate a Stephen F. Monthany enlisted Nov. 24, 1861 in Johnsburg, but the more I researched him the more confused I became: dates of birth didn’t match and dates and places of discharges for health reasons were different. Jo Ann Smith, our Town Historian, was finally able to clear up my confusion. According to research by Monthany descendant Glenn Davis in 1995, there were two Stephen Monthanys (also spelled Montheany), a father and a son, who enlisted on the same day, placing an “X” by their name and fought side-by-side in the same company in the same regiment (Co. I of the 93rd NYVI). A year later both were discharged, within two weeks of each other for health reasons. In Dec. of 1863 they both re-enlisted and fought together in Co. K of the 2nd Reg’t NY Veteran Cavalry. The regiment was mustered out Nov. 8, 1865 in Talladega, Alabama. The son returned home and the father headed to Mobil, Alabama looking for work and was never heard of again. Anyone out there related to Stephen Monthany or Glenn Davis? Any diaries or pictures? In preparation for my September 2011 Tannery Pond Community Center Presentation I’d appreciate hearing if you have any pictures, diaries or information on the men in this week’s column or from prior columns. Please contact me at 215-3009 or pearsall.glenn@gmail.com. Glenn L. Pearsall Monasty, John (Also spelled Moriarty) Born April 27, 1847 in Sharron, VT, son of John and Julia (Carmody). Enlisted in Johnsburg Feb. 15, 1864 for three years as a corporal in Co. B of the 96th NY Volunteer Infantry. Discharged after the war on Feb. 5, 1866.

Monroe, Benjamin Franklyn Washington Little is known of this man with a most patriotic name. Son of Giles Monroe; mother ’s name unknown. Enlisted Aug. 11, 1862 for three years as a private in the 118th NY Volunteer Infantry. May have died in the war. Monthany, Stephen Born about 1821 in New York. Married Margaret Bushey Feb. 5, 1844 in Benson, VT. Moved to Johnsburg about 1855. On Nov. 24, 1861 enlisted, with his son Stephen F. Monthany, as a private in Co. I of the 93rd NY Volunteer Infantry. Spent time in various hospitals and discharged for health reasons Jan. 14, 1863 in Baltimore, MD. Re-enlisted Dec. 1863 in Co. K of the 2nd Reg’t NY Veteran Cavalry, also known as the Empire Light Cavalry. Discharged Nov. 1865 and never heard from thereafter.

Monthany, Stephen Francis Born April 9,1846 in Wallingford, VT., son of Stephen and Margaret (Bushy). Moved to Johnsburg with his parents when he was nine. At age 15 enlisted with his father in Co. I of the 93rd NYVI. Discharged for health reasons a year later on Dec. 30, 1862 at Falmouth, VA. Re-enlisted under the name Francis Montheany, with his father, in Dec. 1863 in Co. K of the 2nd NY Veteran Cavalry. Shot through the shoulder and left lung four months later on April 23, 1864, a wound that is said to have caused him grief the rest of his life. Listed as Stephen Francis Montheany while he recuperated in the hospital. Mustered out with his unit Nov. 8, 1865 and appears to have returned to Johnsburg after the war.

Obituaries Charles “Chuck” Volcheck March 21, 2010 NISKAYUNA — Charles Volcheck, age 89, passed away on Sunday, March 21. He was the son of the late Charles and Sophia Volcheck. He will be fondly remembered and missed by his friends and family for the very interesting way he had of “expressing himself” and his deep down passion for the things he loved and life in general. Charles was a World War II veteran of the army and served in the war in France. After the war he worked in Alaska building communications towers and later worked as a line man for the NY Telephone Co. He loved everything to do with sports and was the manager and played for the Telephone Co. Twilight Baseball Team. Wherever life took him he remained an active member of The American Legion, VFW and 40/8. Pursuing his love for the outdoors, he moved from the city to the Adirondacks, settling in Bakers Mills and opening a tavern, Chuck’s Foxx Lair, (now J&J Foxx Lair). It was the kind of place where “everybody knows your name” and for sure there were many friendships made and stories to tell during the years he owned the bar. He sat on the Warren County ASCS agricultural committee for several years and threw himself into farming as well. He was always busy building something or moving earth with excavating equipment he owned.(another hobby) He greatly enjoyed a good tune and could play enough guitar or harmonica to join in with the band. His appreciation of music was passed on to his children, Tom and Lisa, who made music their life. Survivors include his wife, Ella Volcheck and son Tom Volcheck from Rennselaer, a daughter, Lisa Santoso from Niskayuna, a son Charles Volcheck formerly from Riparius, a sister Anne Liptak of Greensburg, PA and a sister Pauline Eagle of North Creek, two step-sons, Lawrence and David Cook and step-daughters Karen Cook and Kathy Gale. He is also predeceased by two sisters, Mary Kalt and Helen Pollack and a son, Victor Volcheck. He will also be greatly missed by his many grand children and great -grandchildren. Friends and relatives are invited to attend the interment and rendering of military honors at the Gerald B.H. Solomon National Cemetery on Friday, April 16th at 10:00 am. As a special tribute, an evening of entertainment, food and drinks is being planned for Saturday, May 1st to be held at J&J Foxx Lair Tavern. All will be welcome.

6 - NEWS ENTERPRISE • MINERVA

SATURDAY April 3, 2010

Broadway comes to Minerva By Mike Corey denpubs@denpubs.com MINERVA — Broadway, with all its glitz, energy, life, and music, came to Minerva on March 27 - 28. On those evenings, the Minerva Central School Drama Club presented From “Wizard” to “Wicked”: Broadway thru the Decades. The show was an extensive revue of songs from Broadway shows over the past 100 years. Each of the two performances drew large crowds looking to enjoy great singing and dancing, and they found it. Songs from musicals representing each decade over the past century on Broadway in NYC were performed by MCS students in a way that drew one in to the musical energy. The full cast of about 35 students and select individual students performed the songs, which often included elaborate choreographed dance numbers. From the rous-

ing “The Lullaby of Broadway” (42nd Street) opening full cast event to the “There’s No Business Like Show Business” (Annie Get Your Gun) finale, each tune was well-represented. The original concept of this show came from MCS Music Director Sabrina LaPointe, who served as producer and director of the show. The accompaniment was provided by Wendy Deshetsky. Thanks to all the backstage and front-of-house workers. A special thank you to set designer Mindy Piper, costumers Sabrina LaPointe and Marge Stohmeyer, sound and lighting technicians Jed Armstrong and Anthony LaPointe, and choreographers Sabrina LaPointe, Massena Green, and Briana Hammond. Historical information was gathered by Sabrina LaPoint, Kailyn D’Avignon, and Benn Hall. The time and energy that the students put into these performances was evident throughout.

studio in Chestertown and will be joined by their mother organization Guiding Steps and Praise Dance Co. of South Glens Falls. The girls will be putting the final touches on their lyrical performance of TobyMac’s “City On Our Knees” in the coming weeks. They met on Monday evening for rehearsal, still sore from dancing at Dance Olympus in Albany over the weekend and began to focus on the Times Square performance. “They are really sore and tired, but they have been working so hard for this,” said Ortiz. “It’s really paying off.” The convention is directed by the head choreographer of the famed Rockettes and attracts dance troops and schools from across the country. The students will have the opportunity to not only dance in Times Square, but work with prominent instructors such as Jared Grimes — a jazz and hip hop specialist. For some, this is their first experience with a performance of this caliber. “I am excited, but nervous because I have never even been to New York City before,” said Hayden, the youngest dancer to perform.

The girls who will perform range in age from 12-17 and have all been dancing for close to 10 years. “I am excited because I have never done anything like this before,” said Daley. “I am sure that I will be really nervous when I get there.” Guiding Steps North has been operating in Chestertown since September. After several local dance studios disappeared over the past year, parents contacted Debra Wood, director of Guiding Steps and within months her daughter, Ortiz, started offering classes at the studio in Chestertown. Ortiz has danced at the convention before with past troops, but this is the first time she will be bringing a group of her students to perform. “They are well prepared and dance very well for their ages,” she said. Despite the fact that this will be the biggest crowd they have performed for, their nerves didn’t show on Monday as they rehearsed their performance in its entirety. “I am certainly proud of the work they have done and I am excited for this opportunity,” said Ortiz. “I am sure I will be very nervous, however, when they take the sage.” For more information on Guiding Step Dance, visit www.guidingsteps.com.

Walt’s Bump Contest at Gore attracts over 100 contestants By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com

NORTH CREEK — Gore Mountain is squeezing every last inch of snow out of winter and making it count. The mountain hosted its annual Walt’s Bump Camp last weekend and attracted more than 100 contestants. “We are going to stay open as long as we can, but it all depends on the weather,” said marketing director Emily Stanton. The mogul course was designed by Gore’s own crew and the competition was judged by local ski school instructors. It attracted skiers, riders and telemark skiers of varying ages from all over the northeast. “The bump contest is my favorite time of year,” said nine year old contestant, Emily Turner. Contestants were judged on speed, style, control and overall performance.

Skiers and riders practice their tricks on the course before the competition begins.
