Adirondack Tri-County Nursing and Rehab Center residents look forward to harvest By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK — Volunteers came to the Adirondack Tri-County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center (ATCNRC) on Monday armed with potting soil and seeds a plenty. They were there to help residents begin to plan their own flower and vegetable gardens. Members of the ATCNRC auxiliary and volunteer gardening group who came to support the residents included Judy Lapenna, Wanda Callihan, Noel Dingman, Kit Huggard, Georgine Rausch, Sharon Aleksejczyk and Jan Thurling. The planting is an annual event for the volunteers and is a collaboration between the two groups and the ATCNRC activities department in an effort to get residents outside and interested in gardening. “It’s an exciting event,” said ATCNRC landscape gardener Amanda Savarie. “The residents enjoy it and
the volunteers are great at what they do.” This is the first year that the planting will include vegetables that will hopefully be harvested and prepared in meals at the ATCNRC. “Our goal is for the residents to be able to use the vegetables that they planted,” said Savarie. Once seedlings are sprouting from Monday’s planting, they will be transplanted outside in to ‘Victory Gardens’. These gardens are raised container gardens that are accessible to those in wheelchairs. After the harvesting process takes place in a few months, residents will also sell their flowers and produce to staff and community members. “I have tried and tried to plant and all I ever get are weeds,” said one of the residents of her previous planting experience. The help from gardening volunteers will hopefully ensure that there is something to harvest in the fall, according to Savarie.

lindsay@denpubs.com BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE — James and Gina Mitchell of Indian Lake gave a new name to an old business on Monday. They are the official new owners of Joyce’s Auto Body Inc. on Durant Road in Blue Mountain Lake. The shop will soon boast new letterhead and will be called J & G Auto & Towing Inc. Mitchell has been working at Joyce’s for the past six years until he began the process of assuming ownership from Ken Hinckley about a year ago. “He was tired of running two business,” said Mitchell. “It was getting to be too much for him.” Hinckley is also owner of Dunham Boat Service in Big Moose. When he offered the shop to his then employee, there was no hesitation, according to Mitchell. Despite the new name, the shop will still offer the same services. Mitchell will maintain the collision and mechanical repairs, free insurance estimates, NYS inspections, and 24-hour towing services. Mitchell was born and raised in Indian Lake and graduated from Indian Lake Central School in

ALBANY — The region’s largest environmental organization, the Nature Conservancy, is now under the microscope of state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo. Following a New York Post article this week detailing that the state overpaid for forest preserve lands primarily in the Adirondacks, Cuomo has opened a formal investigation into how the Nature Conservancy values its massive holdings and who the $3.5 billion green group influences in Albany. Office of the Attorney General officials said Wednesday that Gov. David Paterson requested the inquiry after the New York Post reported the Conservancy recently reaped a 57 percent profit on land sold to the state that it had only owned for three years. And,

Elizabeth Nash Foundation hosts 2010 benefit dinner for cystic fibrosis By Lindsay Yandon
“Liz did not let cystic fibrosis define her life, but rather she defined the way to live with disability,” said Birch. She attended Johnsburg Central School through 1984 and graduated from Queensbury Central School in 1988. She graduated from the University of Rochester in 1992 with a B.S. in Molecular Genetics, cum laude. Liz earned a Ph.D in Human Genetics from the University of Utah in 1998 and worked as a cystic fibrosis researcher at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the University of California in San Francisco. Liz was chair of the Research Advisory Committee of the Cystic Fibrosis Research Institute of Mountain View, California and served as a mentor for teens with cystic fibrosis. Liz authored and co-authored many scientific studies for publication in medical journals and presented at scientific meetings. She held three patents in the use of robotics in genetic research along with participating in research for the Human Genome Project. As Liz’s last act of research, on behalf of cystic fibrosis, she donated her lungs to the Research Center at Stanford University Hospital. She died on Feb. 22, 2003. For more information on the foundation visit their website at www.elizabethnashfoundation.org. Reservations for the event are encouraged. Please call Nancy Beaudin at 251-2240 by April 20.
lindsay@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK — This year ’s fifth annual Elizabeth Nash Foundation (ENF) benefit dinner, with a French theme, will be held on April 25 in the Great Room at the Copperfield Inn. The ENF was established in 2004 by Elizabeth’s family to honor and perpetuate her lifelong example of giving and to continue her fight against cystic fibrosis. The foundation is focused on cystic fibrosis research, education and support. Music will be featured during the social hour from 3 - 4 p.m. and Tim Wechgelaer will play during dinner. Dinner will be served at 4 p.m. followed by a fund raising auction. There is a $30 suggested donation and all proceeds from donations and the auction will go directly to ENF. The benefit dinner is coordinated by Nancy and Joel Beaudin. “This is a very ‘close-to-home thing,” said event promoter Lloyd Burch. “The Nash family is important to the North Creek community.” Ann and Jim Nash lived in the area with their children, Elizabeth, Patrick and Christine. Jim was President and CEO of Barton Mines and Ann was a math professor at Adirondack Community College. Liz, as she was most commonly known, was born on March 30, 1970. At the age of three, she was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis.

Garden Club to host “101 Uses for Adirondack Plants”
Scholarships available for Adirondack students to attend DEC Environmental Education Camps NORTH RIVER — Students living in the Adirondacks between the ages of 12 and 17 are eligible to apply for a full or partial scholarship to attend one week of Environmental Education Camp at Camp Colby, near Saranac Lake or Pack Forest Camp, near Warrensburg. All that is required is a sincere interest in living in the outdoors in a natural setting with other campers and participating in fun activities, classes and games that teach the wise use of natural resources. Scholarships are based on interest, not need. A week at camp promises fun and adventure. Campers participate in a discovery group, completing lessons ranging from group dynamics to field, forest, and pond explorations, to a study of human impact. Group members learn science, solve challenges, play games, keep a journal, catch salamanders, net butterflies and discover the interconnectedness of life on earth. College-educated counselor staff guides all activities, encouraging participation and respect among group members while interpreting the natural world for
campers. Additionally, campers choose from a variety of optional activities throughout the week that introduce them to outdoor pursuits and pastimes. Experiences include fishing, canoeing, archery, exploring a bog and overnight camping trips. Both of the camps offer Sportsman Education. Camping sessions run from Sunday afternoon to Saturday morning. Weeks for 12 to 14 year olds at Camp Colby start on June 27 and go through Aug. 7. At Pack Forest Camp, weeks for this age group are July 18-24 and Aug. 1–7, and weeks for 15 to17 year olds are June 27 – July 17 and July 25 - 31. Specific weeks are designated for campers attending for the first time and those returning. This opportunity is being sponsored by the Cold River Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club, located in the central Adirondacks. Enrollment is limited and will depend on space available. Two scholarships will be awarded. For a scholarship application, contact Jane Moon, PO Box 24, North River, NY, 12856 or 251-9941.

INDIAN LAKE — The Indian Lake Garden Club is hosting a presentation entitled, “101 Uses for Plants of the Adirondacks, Today and Yesterday”. The program will be presented by Ellen Rathbone, Environmental Educator and naturalist with the Adirondack Park Agency Visitor Interpretive Center in Newcomb. While drawn to wildlife, Ellen has found that studying plants to be one of the most interesting disciplines simply because plants are pretty stationary. “You can sneak up on them and they don’t run or fly away,” she said. Her presentation will share what she has learned to be one of the most fascinating aspects of plants - how people have used them both in the past and in more modern times. The program will be held 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 21 at the Indian Lake Ski Hut located on Route 30. The program is free to guests and new members are welcome. For additional information, please call Pat Leonard at 648-0044.

In Review: The Pink Panther Strikes Again
NEWCOMB — On Saturday, April 17 from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m., the Visitor Interpretive Center in Newcomb invites all garden enthusiasts to join Master Gardener Lorraine Miga for a program entitled Planning a Garden & Starting Seeds Indoors. There will be demonstrations on how to sow seeds indoors in preparation for spring planting and participants will learn how best to plan a garden. Also, learn the importance of frost dates and row covers and learn why crop rotation should be done. Lastly, get tips on thinning and transplanting seedlings, what should be directly planted and much more. Pre-registration is not required and the program is free. Also, on Saturday, April 17 there will be a family trail walk on the VIC’s trails from 10 - 11:30 a.m. By joining VIC staff on this trail walk, families will discover the diversity of a forest habitat. Look for birds, insects, nests, woodland wildflowers, forest floor plants and much more. Pre-registration is not required and this program is also free. For further information on these two events, contact the VIC at 5822000 or visit their website at www.apa.state.ny.us.
By Hillary Bureau - NCS student writer denpubs@denpubs.com NEWCOMB — French accents, cross dressing, a mad woman and Pink Panthers are all a great concoction for fun and laughter. “The Pink Panther Strikes Again,” a play written by William Gleason, was performed at Newcomb Central School Friday, March 26 and Saturday, March 27 and was an awesome success. The program reads, “Chief inspector Jacqueline Clousea fights for her life and the future of mankind in the most bazaar and dangerous caper of her clumsy career. Pauline Dreyfus, once Chief Inspector and now a raving Lunatic, holds the world at bay with the ultimate weapon, the Doomsday Machine!” For those who missed the theatrical comedy put on by the Newcomb High School students, you truly missed a once in a lifetime performance. Director and English teacher, Terri Smith rewrote many aspects of the play to incorporate an Adirondack theme. It was very amusing to learn that one now needs to have a passport to travel to Lake George. I have to say the most hilarious as-
pect of the entire performance was actor Shelby Poulton’s ability to speak English words with an outrageous and priceless French accent. She reminded me so much of Steve Martin in recent film adaptations. She even had Clouseau’s absurd stance perfected hands crossed behind her back and stomach pushed forward with a squinting facial expression. On top of the posture and accent, she learned a ton of lines. Well done Shelby. Sassy Pink Panther, played by Larissa Roy was just as entertaining to watch as Roy’s role as nerdy genius, Professor Helen Fassbender. Both roles were diverse and she acted them well. Brandon Poulton switched it up after playing a reserved butler at the Fassbender family home. He threw us all a curve ball by walking down the center aisle with a white sparkle dress, a Dolly Parton wig, and a huge white feather in his hair, singing to the tune of “I Feel Like a Woman” by Shania Twain. His performance was a riot. This play was definitely something to laugh about. Congratulations to the entire cast, you did a wonderful job. Bravo!

Probe From page 1 that sale came during a time land values fell considerably. In a letter to Cuomo, Paterson noted that no evidence of legal wrongdoing has surfaced, but he did authorize the Attorney General to probe the value assessment methodology employed in the sale and the sway the Conservancy wields over Albany power brokers. “If you discover evidence of such criminality that warrants the expansion of this referral, we will consider expanding the scope to grant you that additional authority,” Paterson wrote. Cuomo’s spokesman said the probe also extends into the office of state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, who holds the state’s purse strings. In 2008, the state bought a 20,000 acre Clinton County tract from the Nature Conservancy for $10 million, a $3.7 million increase over what the green group paid in 2005. Yet, according to the state Office of Real Property, property values in the region only increased 15 percent over that time period. The green group is currently trying to sell another 58,000 acres of central Adirondack land to the state. It’s part of a larger 150,000 acre tract the organization bought from FinchPruyn Paper for $110 million in 2007. Last year, the conservancy sold 92,000 acres to the Danish pension fund ATP Timberland Invest. In a recent interview, Nature Conservancy Executive Director Mike Carr and spokeswoman Connie Prickett said there’s often a markup associated to a land sale to the state. But they stressed the additional costs reflect not only rising property values, but also the time and money the organization invests in the land prior to the sale. “We have to get in and out of a project whole, but that’s not a profit,” Carr said. “We do leave millions of dollars in these projects,” Prick-

Adirondack Park Local Government Review Board Executive Director Fred Monroe said it appears state officials pay the extra amount to gain the favor of powerful environmentalists. “I believe there is Adorned with headlines accusing the a close relationship state of an unsavory deal, the New York between the Nature Post detailed the Nature Conservancy Conservancy and selling Adirondack land to the state — the DEC. Johnsburg Goes to War: 1861-1865 T
he issue of slavery caused a major schism in this country and within the Johnsburg Methodist Church. Radical abolitionist parishioners arguing for a strong stand against slavery left the Johnsburg Methodist congregation and in 1849 they hired Rev. Enos Putnam of Vermont to hold revival meetings and organize a Wesleyan Church in the township. The Mill Creek Wesleyan Methodist Church on Garnet Lake Road was built in 1859. Rev. Enos Putnam helped build the steeple for that church and was active in the Underground Railroad in the area. When war came, it was only natural that Henry, the eldest of his four adopted children, would enlist. He survived almost two years of war, but was killed June 3, 1864 at the Battle of Cold Harbor. Jeanne Robert Foster ’s poem “The Old Church” is a moving description of the pain and anguish felt by Rev. Putnam upon hearing of his son’s death. Henry’s body was transported home and buried in the churchyard. In preparation for my Sept. 2011 Tannery Pond Community Center Presentation I’d appreciate hearing if you have any pictures, diaries or information on the men in this week’s column or from prior columns. Please contact me at 215-3009 or pearsall.glenn@gmail.com. Glenn L. Pearsall

A
t the beginning of each new season I think it is my favorite time of the year. In Fall, when the leaves turn yellow, orange and red, I say that the Adirondacks couldn’t look more beautiful. Then the leaves fall to the ground and we are left with a brown, barren landscape – until the first snowfall. Winter ’s appearance changes the view from my kitchen window from brown to pristine white. And when a wet, heavy snow coats the empty tree branches, and the sun glistens on the freshly fallen blanket of snow, I decide that Winter is the most beautiful season. After several months, what’s left of the snow along the roadside has turned gray/black. I long for the sun to melt it and the ice in Mill Creek. I want to hear the sound of the creek running freely once more. About the time when the storm windows give way to screens, the grass begins to green up and different birds visit the feeders, this fickle soul falls in love with spring. What is so great about this season is that it gets better with every passing day. First, a few tentative snow drops rear their heads in the garden. They are soon followed by wild hyacinths and now daffodils are blooming. The trees begin to leaf. There is just one big old maple left out front. I’m hopefully watching for its first leaves to appear. We have a gnarled old apple tree with holes in its trunk, but it is sporting a new batch of green leaves and may even give us fragrant white blossoms again this year. The lilac bushes promise a week of lavender beauty in May. There is something very nice about knowing what plants inhabit our garden and watching for their reappearance year after year. Like old friends who have come to call, I welcome them each Spring – the best time of the year. I think this new love affair will last (at least until the first day of summer).

Essex County gets new public defenders By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — In early January, Lake Placid resident Brandon Boutelle was appointed to chief public defender for Essex County after the sudden death of longtime public defender Livingston “Livy” Hatch of Willsboro. Boutelle accepted a salary of $92,000 and a two-year term in the seat. His appointment received final approval from the Board of Supervisors in February. He has ben serving under Hatch as deputy public defender since January of 2005. Boutelle had only positive things to say about the work of his well-respected predecessor and said he appreciated the opportunity to work with someone with over 40 years of law experience. “I don't know if I can fill his shoes, but I'm going to try,” Boutelle said. Boutelle is a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technolo-
Joyce’s From page 1 2005. His wife, Gina also has local roots and graduated from Newcomb Central School in 2006. They have two children, Kaydance - 4 and Keygan - 1. Gina will be coming on to work with her husband and run the office for the business. “We are both really excited about trying something new,” said Mitchell. “We look forward to keeping up the same quality of service that Ken did with Joyce’s.”

gy with a criminal-justice degree. He received his law degree from Albany Law School in 2000. Before coming to the public defender office, Boutelle worked with McPhillips, Fitzgerald & Cullum, L.L.P. in Glens Falls. Boutelle also served as a commissioned officer in the Navy JAG Corps, where he worked on defense in court marshal cases. He recently returned from Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp on active duty as a military defense attorney. He also served four years on active duty with the U.S. Navy's Judge Advocate General's Corps. The public defender office sees heavy case loads that have been handled solely by Boutelle since Hatch’s passing. He recently appointed former Rensselaer County Assistant District Attorney Robert D. Seymour to assist as Essex County's new deputy public defender. The position has been vacant since Boutelle moved up to chief public defender and he welcomes the help. “We received over a dozen resumes. There was a lot of diversity and a good range of experience,” Boutelle said. The interview process narrowed it to two attorneys and Seymour started in late March on a salary of $58,000 a year. Seymour is originally from Malone and recently moved to Lake Placid. “He has North Country roots and thorough knowledge of the area,” said Boutelle.
Seymour commented that the transition from prosecutor to defender has been an adjustment. “The legal aspect is the same, I’m just on the other side now,” he said. “The process is different, but my experience as a former prosecutor has been invaluable.”

Jaguars will rely on experienced roster JOHNSBURG — Veteran coach Tim Leach lost a large part of his pitching staff and hitting talent last year, but is encouraged by the experience that will return to the field this year. Leach has been coaching the team for 24 years. Last year ’s record was 5 - 5 in conference play and 6 - 9 over all. Pitchers lost to 2009 graduation included Josh Harvey, Anthony Hyde and Andrew Sherrick. The Jaguars also lost several solid hitters including Dalton Ordway, Nick McCaroll, Cody Wolf and Michael Couzens. The Jaguar roster includes only two seniors and will rely on a strong group of juniors to lead the way. “We are young, but experienced,” said Leach. “We will rely on that experience and I think it will take us pretty far.” Dylan Wolfe will be strong behind the mound and will rotate into the outfield. Ben Richard will step up to begin establishing a new pitching staff with Kevin Conner moving in as a clutch hitter. Sean O’Neill will
start at shortstop and Travis Plansker will start at third. The lone seniors on the team include Cory Gazaille and Darren Goodspeed in the outfield. Juniors Lance Baker and Matt Henry will join them and sophomores Dustin Weller and Chris Scott will round out the outfield. Sophomore Taylor Ordway and Liam Harrison will rotate between infield and occasionally take the mound. Leach sees Johnsburg as one of the top contenders for the division title and hopes to be competitive outside the league as well. “We are as experienced as anyone else out there and we will be in the hunt,” said Leach. He knows Indian Lake/Long Lake will be a forminable opponent who will not give away their section VII title easily. Minerva/Newcomb will be the wildcard of the league, he said and should not be overlooked. “It’s anybody’s game this year,” said Leach.

Lady Jaguars welcome seven new players to varsity level JOHNSBURG — Head coach Phil Goodman pulled up seven new players to the Lady Jaguars this year and will deal with the absence of several 2009 graduates. Goodman has been coaching the Lady Jaguars for 14 years and went 2-8 with the team last year. Allison Ordway at first base and Samantha Shook at third base left significant gaps in the Jaguar roster, according to Goodman. He sees junior Nicole Wardwell and sophomore Sierra Galusha stepping up to fill those spots. Senior Kelly Blackhurst will lead the team from behind the plate, while seniors Brittney Allard and Margaret Welz will be strong from the mound and in the outfield. Junior Cortina Greene will help with the pitching efforts and junior Cassandra Prouty will start at shortstop. Goodman acknowledged the potential of his younger players as well as the experience of his starters. “Once our seven new players get accli-

mated to the varsity level, we will improve,” he said. “When we get it all together we are going to be competitive.” He hopes to capitalize on the team’s strong defense and speed in order to challenge the league leaders. Senior Chelsea Bromley will lead the outfield, while juniors Skye Allard and Kelly Brown will join her. Sophomores Kayla Tyrel and Emily Walter will also play in the outfield. Junior Cassie Cleveland will back up Blackhurst behind the plate and sophomores Rachael Dunkley and Meghan Sponable will rotate between infield and outfield. Goodman acknowledged that Indian Lake/Long Lake will be the team to beat in the division with strong pitching and an overall athletic team. Minerva/Newcomb always improves during the season, he said. “Once we get our positioning figured out and get a few games under our belt, we will be competitive,” said Goodman.

Indian Lake-Long Lake expects to be at top of division INDIAN LAKE — The Lady Orange softball team is returning several starters from last year ’s team and should be the number one contender for the Division III championship, according to head coach David Olbert. “I am looking forward to all of our games and am anxious to play the stronger teams in D1 and D2,” he said. “I think we will be more competitive than last year ’s team.” This is Olbert’s first year with the team and their record last year was 6-6. The Orange will miss a strong outfield presence from Nicole Blanchard, Danielle Mitchell and Lindsay Skarrett who all graduated last year. Olbert sees his returning starters as fully capable to step up and fill in the holes, however. Returning players include senior Kaylie Miller who will start on the mound. She pitched last year and her arm has much improved for this season, according to Olbert. Senior Sierra Olbert will start behind the plate for Miller, while juniors Allison Pine, Murphy Farrell and Jenny Strain will fill in at first base, second base and third base. Junior Carli Reynolds will start at shortstop. The team welcomes five freshman to the varsity level, including Emma Gray. Gray will be shifting between pitching, third base and the outfield and Olbert expects to see good things come from the young player. “She puts in a lot of work in the off-sea-

lead in the outfield with Kelsey Tebo, Colleen Nerney and freshmen Meg Smith, Morgan King, Jessica Bain and Emily Waters. Freshman Prudance Dechene will backup Olber at catcher. “We are working to improve our defense,” said Olbert. “Once we get better at making the difficult plays, we will be successful.”
Olbert looks at Minerva-Newcomb as being their biggest rivalry in division play. Olbert is assisted by hitting coach Gary Gray and pitching coach Rick Miller who help out with all areas of practice beyond their specialty. “Being able to work with such experienced assistant coaches gives us a tremendous advantage,” said Olbert.

Minerva • Newcomb MOUNTAINEERS Mountaineers look to battle Jaguars for division title MINERVA — The Minerva-Newcomb Mountaineers welcome back several returning seniors in hopes of being the team to beat in the South this year. Coach Edward LaCourse of Newcomb has been with the team for 13 years and expressed a lot of confidence in the players returning to the field this year. He will miss Kevin Yandon at first base, Sam Kelly as number one pitcher and Devin Tokarz in the outfield. They went 6 – 4 in the league and 7 - 5 overall in 2009. “They each leave significant holes in their positions, but we have worked hard to fill in those holes,” said LaCourse. He is expecting big things from Japanese international student Tatsuki Miyozato on the mound. “He is an outstanding player who has a good fast-ball and excellent off speed pitches,” said LaCourse. LaCourse believes Miyozato will be the difference between a first place finish and a second place finish behind Johnsburg. The Moutaineers also return three strong seniors including strong hitter and returning all-star Brandon Poulton,
Branden Tokarz in the outfield and Jesse Montanye as lead-off hitter and infielder. In a relatively young line-up, these three will make up the core hitting power for Minerva-Newcomb. “If these boys hit well and do their jobs in the field, we will be dangerous,” said LaCourse. LaCourse is also looking to get a lot out of sophomore Dylan Saville. He will be behind the mound with a great arm and should throw out a lot of runners, according to LaCourse. Seniors Roger Kelly and Sorravit Bunjongpean will see playing time at infield. Junior Jonas Urwyler will join them along with Sophomore Morgan Winslow at 1st base. The outfield will be complete with seniors Brandon Dunbar and Chi Ueawriyanuken, junior Cody Clickner, and sophomores Ben Fish and Calbert Galusha. LaCourse looks at Johnsburg as their biggest competition in the division, but is looking forward to seeing the strong Schroon Lake in sectionals as well as Crown Point in some non-league play.

Lady Mountaineers return solid talent for upcoming season first base and Tara Galusha switching off between catcher and outfield. Completing the infield will be seniors Emma Parsonson and Shelby Poulton, and sophomores Caelan Gould and Amanda Bellotti. The outfield will be led by senior Hillary Bureau, joined by juniors Shiori Takagi, Jae Lee, Anni Kostiainen, Charly Egli and Bridget Stith, and sophomore KayLeigh Soentik. The starting line-up for the Mountaineers boasts a lot of young players including six underclassmen with only three seniors. “Our youth may hold us back in the beginning,” said McGinn. “We should, however, have our game together by sectionals.” McGinn believes his team will be in contention with Johnsburg for the division title and will look to be successful in sectionals.

MINERVA— The Lady Mountaineers only lost one senior to graduation last year — Chelsea Walsh at third base and will rely on returning players to excel at their positions. “We bring a lot of experience,” said coach Bruce McGinn. “We are certainly stronger positionwise than we were last year.” McGinn has been coaching softball for the past seven years. Last year the team went 2-8. The Mountaineers return fouryear-starter Larissa Roy at shortstop and as their number three hitter. Junior Laura Tokarz will lead the team from the mound and also bring solid hitting experience. Sophomore Marlena Peter brings tons of natural talent to the infield at second base. “She will be a driving force for the whole team,” McGinn said of Peter. McGinn also expects a lot out of sophomores Renna Yandon at

Orange looks to recover from pitching loses INDIAN LAKE — After losing their entire pitching staff and welcoming first year coach John Boya, the Indian Lake/Long Lake Orange plans to stay competitive in their division. With the loss of seniors Alex Smith, Jordan Monthony and Jeff Reynolds to graduation last year, Boya will be rebuilding his pitching staff and acknowledges it is his biggest challenge. “They were a pivotal part of the success of last year ’s team,” said Boya. “They will be tough to replace.” Last year ’s team went 8-0 in the league, 15-2 overall and brought home a section VII championship. Returning seniors Zack Mitchell, Jordan Wallace and Ben Black will lead the team, according to Boya. Mitchell is known as the team’s all-around player and will pick up the slack from the mound as well as act as lead-off pitcher. “We will depend a lot on his talent and speed,” said Boya. Jordan will be strong behind the plate and Ben Black will play a varying role helping
with pitching and switching between infield and outfield. “Our strength is certainly that the players who are returning are very versatile,” said Boya. “Once they find their positions, we will be successful.” Boya admits it will be a learning process to find their groove from the mound and fit players with positions. Finding such groove will be key in determining their place in the league, he acknowledged. Junior infielders will include Hank Evatt and Connor Burgess, while sophomores Kevin Boya and freshmen Matt Moore, Colin Farrell and Taylor Wells will come off the bench to the infield. Junior Matt Rusch and freshman Dalton Aldous will play in the outfield. Boya acknowledged that Johnsburg will be the team to beat in the division, but Minerva/Newcomb will also be a difficult test. “I am not sure where we will stand in the league, but we will do out best to capitalize on out strengths - our hitting and defensive game,” he said.
