Foodies to Families: Something for everyone at the Adirondack Museum By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com

By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK — Main Street in North Creek will transform and take the shape of an art museum the evening of Thursday, May 20 as various artists will be showcased in local businesses as part of North Creek’s first art walk of the debut 2010 series. The walks will continue on the third Thursday of every month through Sept. from 5 - 7 p.m. and will feature a variety of artists and mediums. Spearheaded by North Creek Depot Museum Director, Michelle San Antonio, the event is designed to draw attention to not only the featured artists, but also the businesses of North Creek. “This is an exciting new event,” she said. “We hope that it draws people out on to the streets of North Creek.” San Antonio developed the idea from similar shows that she has attended throughout the Northeast. “Art walks are great at highlighting both art and space,” she said. “It’s a fun way to experience both.

Businesses and artists participating May 20 include: • Merriam Insurance Agency showing photographs of Ed and Terry Wyant • Cafe Sarah showing photographs of Elise and Woody Widlund • Andie's Restaurant showing photographs of Dave Braley • Alpine Lodge showing watercolors of Frances Gaffney • Copperfield Inn showing quilts of Allen Girvin • Pete's Aah and Poiema & the Vault showing student art • Town of Johnsburg Library showing works of The Johnsburg Fine Arts Group • Widlund Gallery at Tannery Pond showing mixed media of Sarah Pearsall • Rustic Homestead showing watercolors of Jan Palmer • Owens House showing book art of Robert Walp • Common Roots showing Adirondack furniture of Rob Thul • barVino showing photography of Anna Bowers • Hudson River Trading Company, Christine's Salon and Oasis will also be participating. Anna Bowers, both a business owner and artist in North Creek acknowledged the potential success of this event. “We want to attract as much attention as possible so that it is successful and can happen for years to come,” she said. “It’s a really great way to get people walking down Main Street and into the local businesses.” Look for balloons designating participating businesses on Main Street in North Creek. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome to come out and experience the new and unique event on the evening of May 20.

Foodies From page 1 in the Adirondack Park called, “Let's Eat! Adirondack Food Traditions.” The exhibit shares culinary stories and customs from Native American corn soup to contemporary Farmer's Markets. “Everybody eats! It is a biological necessity, a pleasure, and a ritual,” said chief curator Laura Rice. “The food we eat and the way we eat it reflects our culture, our economic status, and our environment.” Generations of residents and visitors have left their mark on Adirondack food traditions. From indigenous foods to family recipes brought from the Old World, from church potluck suppers to cooking around a campfire, food has played an important role in Adirondack life. “Let's Eat!” will feature nearly 300 artifacts that reflect what and how Adirondackers, from pre-contact Native peoples to today's foodies, have eaten. The exhibition draws on the Adirondack Museum's rich collections, including a 3,000-year-old stone bowl, a cheese press, a raisin seeder, a blue silk evening dress, and a recipe for “Tokay wine” in which potatoes are the main ingredients. “Let's Eat!” will also include a “Three Sister's Garden,” newly planted on the museum campus. Native peoples throughout North America have traditionally used a wide range of farming techniques. Perhaps the best known is the interplanting of corn, beans, and squash, a trio often referred to as the “three sisters.” “The exhibit will bring the story of food in the Adirondacks to the present day with an exploration of Farmer's Markets, organic agriculture, and the rising interest in locally grown produce and meats,” said Dineen. “Let's Eat! Adirondack Food Traditions” has been generously supported by

Rachel Monthony Macie Smith Andrew Brown Dominick Miller William Walters Pamela Bennett Andrew Brown Colin Farrell Chelsea Walters Taylor Wells Jerrica Benton Abigail Darling Margaret Carroll Emma Gray Erica Arsenault Melanie Pierson Allison Pine Megan Miller Carli Reynolds Zakari LeBlanc Henry Evatt Jessica Murphy Erica Fredette Jesse Benton Bryan Dunbar Jacob Wells the New York Council for the Humanities. In addition, two popular special exhibits will return for a second year. “Common Threads: 150 Years of Adirondack Quilts and Comforters” includes historic quilts from the museum's textile collection as well as contemporary comforters, quilts, and pieced wall hangings. “A 'Wild, Unsettled Country': Early Reflections of the Adirondacks” highlights paintings, maps, prints, and photographs that illustrate the untamed Adirondack wilderness discovered by early travelers and explorers. The museum will offer a full schedule of lectures, field trips, family activities, hands-on experiences, and special events to delight and engage visitors of all ages. “Let's Eat!” events include “Picnic in the Park” planned for July 10, “The Adirondacks Are Cookin' Out!” - a tribute to food prepared with smoke and fire - on July 29, and Harvest Festival, Oct. 2 & 3, 2010. For information about all that the museum has to offer, please call 352-7311, or visit www.adirondackmuseum.org.

Thank You! There are times when words alone cannot express how we feel. Yet, somehow, through the love, and prayers of friends and family those unspoken words are known. With the support given to all of us from this community, we will each be able to move on in our lives knowing that time will help to lesson the grief, and pain in our hearts. Stacie left this world much to soon, but, we realize that God needed her too. Another angel to care for his children, give us sunshine, and rainbows, and to help pour out the rain. Prayers, kind words, a shoulder to lean on, phone calls, cards, donations; so very many ways people have helped. Thank you all for being with us through this heartbreaking time in our lives.

Sincerely, the Family of Stacie Lynn Ross

Delay in school aid predicted to compound taxpayer burden By Chris Morris denpubs@denpubs.com ALBANY — Gov. Paterson’s recent actions in delaying school aid payments will force school district taxpayers across New York to shoulder an additional financial burden, according to the head of the New York State School Boards Association. In March, Gov. David Paterson delayed the payment of $2.1 billion, and School Board Association Executive Director Timothy Kremer said that Paterson is merely shifting the state’s financial shortfall on local taxpayers. “To cover this delay in state aid, local officials are going to have to borrow money and pay interest on those funds or remove money from interest-

bearing reserve funds,” he said. “Either way, it is yet another cost the state is passing on to districts and local taxpayers.” A recent poll indicates that 56 percent of school board members from districts across the state believe the best way to make up for the delayed aid payments is to use reserve funds. About 18 percent said they would vote for districts to borrow money, while another 14 percent called for spending freezes. Kremer added that 39 percent of districts in New York would not have enough in reserve to cover delayed payments. Two-thirds of board members say the budget delay is impacting budgeting decisions for 2010-11.

Budget woes crimps road maintenance By Chris Morris denpubs@denpubs.com WARRENSBURG — The state Department of Environmental Conservation issued a report Thursday highlighting the impact of New York’s fiscal woes on the agency’s day-today operations. According to information issued last week by DEC Region 5 spokesman David Winchell, the state’s budget shortfall is limiting the agency’s ability to conduct road maintenance in the Adirondack Forest Preserve. Additionally, fiscal problems have delayed construction of recreational facilities on easement lands and have prevented the hiring of assistant forest rangers this summer. The report also notes a number of roads will remain temporarily closed due to the inability to maintain and patrol them. Dozens of roads are currently closed to public motor vehicle access. Many area roadways are gated due to muddy conditions and will remain closed until maintenance can be conducted. The roads are still open for nonmotorized recreational use. The release notes that ongoing parking lot, road, trail, and public facility projects have been suspended pending further funding.

Restrictions focus on wood boilers By Chris Morris denpubs@denpubs.com ALBANY — The state Department of Environmental Conservation is proposing new regulations to cut air pollution from outdoor wood boilers. The agency will hold a series of public hearings on the proposed rules and take public comments through July 2. The rules are intended to reduce the impact of smoke plumes on neighbors. They set emission limits on new boilers sold in New York and set a minimum distance for new boilers to be set from neighboring properties. The rules also include fuel restrictions, stack height requirements and a nuisance provision for both new and existing outdoor wood boilers. The rule also bans the use of existing boilers in the summer when neighbors are

likely to be outdoors and have their windows open, unless the units meet the new requirements applicable to new boilers. DEC Commissioner Pete Grannis said the proposal ensures new outdoor wood boilers will be cleaner, and that existing boilers will be used in the most environmentally sound way possible. “The DEC is continually working to improve air quality, so that all New Yorkers can breathe air that is clean and healthy,” Grannis said. “Today’s proposal is another important step toward that goal.” Scott Santarella is president and CEO of the New York chapter of the American Lung Association. He says people have suffered too long because of exposure to the particulate matter emitted by outdoor wood boilers. “The Lung Association

looks forward to working with the DEC to ensure the most protective public health regulations are implemented, so all New Yorkers can breathe easier,” Santarella said. Ross Gould of Environmental Advocates of New York also lauded the proposed restrictions. “Outdoor wood boilers are a growing concern as large sources of smoke in residential areas in New York,” he said. “With these regulations, the DEC is phasing out the older boilers that emit greater levels of smoke and particulate matter to reduce air pollutants.” Gould said the new regulations represent an important step in improving air quality in New York. “We look forward to working with the DEC to implement regulations for phasing out existing polluting outdoor boilers,” he said.

“This delay is a doublewhammy to schools,” Kremer said. “Not only is it forcing them to scramble to find money to pay their bills today, but it is affecting their budgets for next year.” Many local schools had planned for delays in state aid payments this year. But the cuts proposed by Paterson in the 2010-11 state budget are forcing districts across the Adirondacks to plan for layoffs and program cutbacks.

Johnsburg Town Board should keep their hands off the Kellogg-Waddell property In response to Erwin Morris To the News Enterprise: In replying to Richard Stewart’s letter, JCS Board of Education member Erwin Morris manages to sidestep the real, obvious, issue being raised about the school budget, an issue that troubles not only Stewart, but much of the JCSD community as well. As Stewart makes clear, he’d be willing to accept adding a sensible Pre-K program at JCS provided its cost is financed by reducing wasteful expenditures elsewhere in the budget. Morris mentions that he has, “given up time from work to attend fiscal training courses”. He needs to get his money back. He states the 2010-11 budget has, “committed to almost $200,000 in cuts” or “almost 3 times the cost of the PreK program”. But, he fails to include in his calculations the fact that the total budget reflects an overall expenditure increase of $94,723 (or .95%) after all those cuts have been made. They need to be a lot deeper; here’s where to look: Y2000 Employee Benefits $973,836 (+59.9% 0ver 2004) Medical Insurance $596,636 (+75.8% 0ver 2004)

Y2004 $1,586,712

Y2009 $2,536,590

$1,063,459

$1,869,153

They could also focus on teacher over-staffing in relation to student enrollment: Year # Students 2004/5 433 2009/10 356

# Teachers 42 44

To the News Enterprise: I read with interest a New Enterprise report that the Johnsburg Town Board wants to acquire the Kellogg-Waddell buildings. These buildings offer all kinds of potential benefit to, not only the year round residents, but to the business economy in Johnsburg. The Open Space Institute (OSI) showed tremendous foresight in their purchase of this property and Warren County Parks has made an excellent start at renovating these buildings. Now we hear that Warren County’s short term financial problems threatens their ability to purchase the buildings from OSI and that the Johnsburg Town Board wants to acquire the property. Regardless of whether the town obtains grant money (still paid for with taxes) or donations to finance the property, we need do not need more buildings to maintain long term. I’m concerned that at a time when the town should be trying to reduce the tax burden of town government, the elected leaders want to buy more buildings to maintain and that they’ve already crafted a plan that will require, yet another, part-time employee. OSI has planned to sell the buildings to Warren County. There is no risk of OSI selling the buildings to a private entity. Their focus is preserving open spaces and historic structures and turning them over to local, county or state entities to own and/or manage them. The Johnsburg Town Board should keep their hands off this one and let the county and OSI work it out. Most likely OSI will hold on to the buildings under the on-going stewardship of Warren County. We may continue to enjoy and use the property while the county pays for it. Our elected leaders need to focus on maintaining the infrastructure we already own and providing town services before taking on new expenses.

Thoughts on the JCS budget To the News Enterprise: I would like to take a moment to respond to Erwin Morris’s letter of last week. As a parent, I can appreciate the, “it’s for the children” attitude. As a working man, I can also understand, ”living within my means”. Yes, there were times when I wished that I could afford to give my children more, but there were also times when I could see my feet through my only pair of shoes. I tried to do the best that I could with what I had. This is what we are asking the school board to do. I shouldn’t criticize the school board? I believe that I was given that right in the First Amendment of our Constitution. You may not want to admit it, but I am one of the employers of the school board and the teachers. My tax money is paying a small portion of their wages. It’s my right and my duty to say “shape up”. Richard Stewart

Thank you to family and friends To the News Enterprise: I wish to thank Fr. Sturtz, Fr. Fish, my family, relatives and friends for all their flowers, get-well wishes, Masses, gifts and food. I appreciate your thoughtfulness. Shirley D McNally Olmstedville

What do Morris and his colleagues on the Board propose to do about these unsustainable trends? Finally, does Morris realize there is every likelihood that 2011-12 will be even worse from a school budget perspective for several reasons, including: - loss of federal stimulus dollars which pumped $2.4 billion into NYS schools over a two year period; - a projected multi-billion dollar state budget gap over each of the next 4 years; and - the prospect for continued increases in the cost of employee benefits. What has the JCS Board done to prepare for this perfect storm, and in particular what has been done in the 2010-11 Budget you are presenting to prepare for it?

To the News Enterprise: I am writing this letter in response to the JCS budget committee's protest. Before you cast your vote for the JCS budget on May 18, I wanted to make sure you had the facts: While the JCS district does have a large percentage of senior staff, the median income for a certified teacher in New York State is $70,518 for 2009, according to the New York State Education Department website. That is a much larger salary than the average JCS Teacher is paid. The JCS board has balanced retaining quality teachers at a rate lower than the State average. The health insurance plans that are part of all (not just the teachers) of the employee's compensation package vary in cost. While health insurance plans are quite expensive, the plans offered to the JCS employees are much less expensive then the Medicare costs per family paid out in Warren County. Small class size is Johnsburg Central School's main asset and the reason many families have decided to stay or move back to Johnsburg. If class sizes were to increase dramatically, we may lose a group of young families whom value our small, personalized classrooms. That would further erode our tax base and decrease our population. Regarding our expenditures per student - numbers can be manipulated to prove any point. Instead of handpicking just the schools that spend slightly less per student than Johnsburg, I again went to the NYSED website and viewed every school of similar enrollment size, 300 – 400 students, in all of New York State. While JCS spent just over $23,500/ per student, the average cost per student in this size spends $25,312. If you look deeper, the schools that do spend less money per student than JCS, offer many less programs that are cherished by our community such as our music department, sports programs, AP courses, distant learning lab, etc. Again, I feel JCS provides a great education for our kids at a reasonable cost. I appreciate the opportunity to point out the facts, now it is indeed up to the voters. These statements represent my thoughts and do not represent that of the JCS School Board. To the News Enterprise: Poor Richard's Prayer I looked to the sky and prayed, "Dear Lord! Why can't we convince the school board that times are tough and enough is enough our taxes, we can no longer afford." "But it's for the children we care, The burden, we teachers must bear." If the truth were to be known, the reason our budget has grown, is they desire a wage that's unfair.

harles William West served in the 96th New York Volunteer Infantry, sometimes referred to as the “Plattsburg Regiment” or ”Macomb’s Regiment”. The unit was mustered into service in FebMarch of 1862 and was not disbanded until after the war. During its service, the regiment lost by death and killed in action 7 officers and 41 enlisted men; of wounds received in action 3 officers and 19 enlisted men ; and of diseases and other causes 2 officers and 158 enlisted men. More men were killed in the war from disease than from engagement with the enemy, especially so in the 96th. Married when he enlisted, Charles William West lost his left arm in the war, but survived. In preparation for my September 2011 Tannery Pond Community Center Presentation I’d appreciate hearing if you have any pictures, diaries or information on the men in this week’s column or from prior columns. A Brand New Falcon on River Road O

n Mother ’s Day I finally saw my first female pine warbler, eating at the suet feeder. She doesn’t look like much, like many another mother, but she was a treat. Now I would not be too surprised to see a yellowrumped (myrtle) warbler using the suet as they are known to do it too, but I think that’s all of the fat-eating warblers. Most of them know enough to wait for the bugs. The other bird that is supposed to eat suet, one that hangs out with the chickadee crowd all winter, is the brown creeper, but I have never seen one come closer than the pine tree trunks near the feeding deck. But the biggest bird treat this year has been two merlins, I assume a pair, that have been yelling at each other for two weeks across the road. A big clearcut for a new house is surrounded by tall trees and the merlins sit high in them looking around, flying across the opening once in a while. One evening one sat at the top of the turkey vulture snag, turning its head back and forth as it looked for prey. Merlins (the old name was pigeon-hawk but they probably do not eat pigeons, just resemble them when they fly) catch and eat small birds, including swallows which they can catch on the wing! They also like large insects such as grasshoppers, butterflies and, sadly, dragonflies. In some areas they eat just about anything that moves, with a pair cooperating in flushing and catching prey. These fearless birds, about a foot long, the size of a blue jay, are not really hawks, but are falcons, in the same family as our eight inch kestrel (or sparrow-hawk), and the larger peregrine, the dive-bombing champion of the bird world. Merlins are fast fliers too, with sharply pointed wings and a longish tail. All three species have a dark vertical stripe under the eye, though in the case of “my” merlins it is almost invisible because they are dark all over except for a white throat. Once when a flying bird spread its tail and the late sun shone on it, I could see the many narrow stripes. These worried me until I got to a bird book because I didn’t know this was one of their features and I still wasn’t completely sure of what the species was. The calls are not like the ones on the Stokes 3 CD set. The usual calls here consist of about eight ascending notes in four seconds. I have to say that the communication between the birds is so loud and persistent it could get old! They start nesting in May, so soon they may settle down and be quieter. Merlins breed in the spruce-fir circumpolar regions, nesting in old crow nests, woodpecker holes, and even holes in the ground when desperate. As they are known to hassle even big birds like great horned owls, I wonder if they are making the crows move their nesting place in the big white pines. In days of old in Europe, men used the larger peregrines and two foot tall gyrfalcons for falconry, but ladies were restricted to merlins. Appropriately, the male merlin supplies all the food for the lady during courtship and incubation and sometimes during the nestling period too. Chivalry is not dead after all! Yearlings sometimes help with raising young so it may be true as I thought for a

while that there are three merlins in the area. Merlin populations, like peregrines and eagles, were devastated by pesticide residues which weakened their eggshells, but they are recovering now. No merlins were reported as breeding in the Adirondacks in the 1980 to 1985 breeding bird survey, though there probably was one successful nesting on Cascade Mt. in the last year. But during the last five year survey ending in 2005 many nests were found, because the birds have been spreading south from Canada, the opposite of other recent bird breeding trends. Newcomb has had them for a couple years but I had not heard they were down here until they announced their presence across the road. There are also a few in the rest of New York as they are bold, human-tolerating birds which, like peregrines, will nest even in urban areas. Happy parenting to a good news bird!

n April 9 Judy Monroe and I took a trip to Middlebury, VT. On Rt. 125 we pulled over to take pictures of the most magnificent patch of Dutchman Britches. There were thousands of them. They must like rock ledges because they were hanging from every little ledge. It seems early for them, but with the weather we have been having, every By Ski Bowl Park Gardening Group thing is a little off schedule. We have new growth popping up all over the Ski Bowl garden. The Crocuses are blooming and a few of the daffodils are in bloom, but there are many more to come. We planted some tulips and I need to get down there to put some hot pepper on them before the deer find them (they are deer candy). The Lilac buds are opening and some of the other trees are showing life. Be sure not to get too anxious to uncover your tender plants because the freezing nights could kill them. It is a good time to weed. The crab grass is invading and it is so good to pull one of those long shoots – just think of all of the new grass plants you are eradicating. We still have gardens that need adoption, so if you are interested please call 251-3368. Happy gardening!

Chelsea Dushane delivered a two-run single in the sixth to give Crown Point a 6-5 lead and then Austin came through with her two-strike double to score Brace with two out. The Orange made a run in the bottom of the seventh. Jessica Bain plated a pair with a single, but winning pitcher Lindsey Brace got her 17th strikeout to leave the tieing run on third. Brace walked only two. Kayleigh Miller struck out nine and didn't walk a batter for Indian Lake/Long Lake. WHAT’SHAPPENING 71599

he year was 1979 and I was relishing in the thought of accompanying my father, brother and uncles on our annual trip to our fishing cabin deep in the Canadian outback. At the time, the brook trout there were nearly as plentiful as the black flies and fish in the five- and sixpound classes were not uncommon. We’d laugh, enjoy each other ’s company and forget about the day-to-day worries we’d left behind. The fish were a treat to catch, but were secondary to the camaraderie of close family. It was from these trips that my love of the woods and water first emerged, and I owe a lot of that to my father for introducing me. So when I had an opportunity recently to repay at least part of that favor, I jumped at the chance. My Dad turned 75 on May 2. In recognition, he had one simple request: to celebrate his birthday with his two sons on a brook trout pond. I began planning several months ago to make that request a reality and spent the last week fishing with my Dad in the St. Regis Canoe Area. The trip was everything I knew it could be — a flashback to the days when my father was the one working so my brother and I could experience the pristine beauty of a glass-like pond at first light, capped by the fight of a spunky brook trout. I don’t think I’ve seen my father laugh so much in years and upon our return, he told me he will never forget his 75th birthday. Neither will I, Dad. Nor will I forget who I have to thank for showing me that the best things in life aren’t things. Happy birthday, Dad. John Gereau is managing editor of Denton Publications and an avid outdoorsman. Volunteer rescue and fire personnel Newcomb Rescue Squads join forces in Minerva awaits arrival of new ambulance By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com NEWCOMB — By the end of the month, The town of Newcomb Rescue Squad will celebrate the longawaited arrival of their new ambulance. “We are all really excited about this,” said captain Holly Bradway. “We want to be able to better serve the town of Newcomb and surrounding communities and this is a way we can accomplish that.” Last year, the squad received 87 calls and serves as the only form of emergency medical attention in the town of Newcomb. They also provide mutual aid for several surrounding towns including Minerva and Long Lake. Newcomb does receive 247 paid EMT coverage, but all its drivers and other personnel are volunteers. “We have a core group of really dedicated drivers,” said Bradway. “Without them, we wouldn’t have a squad. This spirit of dedication crosses over from the rescue squad into the fire department in Newcomb as well. The 40 active members on the fire department do what they can to both fight fires and be positive additions to the community. “We join with other local volunteer groups to meet the

needs of this community,” said Chief Mark Yandon. The department participates in Newcomb’s adopta-highway program and sponsors Newcomb Central School students through various scholarships. They also work to raise their own funds for equipment updates. Their annual steak roast, held the last weekend in July, raised around $7,000 last year. Coupled with other grant monies, those funds will soon be used to update some existing equipment at the firehouse.

Despite its small size and limited call volume, Yandon stressed the importance of a department in the town of Newcomb. “We are so isolated that it would be impossible to rely on other departments,” he said. Response times from neighboring communities can exceed 40 minutes. “We have our response time down to about 5-10 minutes,” he said. If interested in joining either Newcomb squad, contact the chief or captain directly.

By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com MINERVA — It’s not unusual in Minerva to find the same faces at both the rescue squad and fires stations on any given day. “Many of the active volunteers on the rescue squad also stay very involved with the fire department,” said EMS Captain Mike Corey. The 16 members of the rescue squad often contribute as part of the 29 members of the fire department, according to chief Kerry Killon. The two entities combined respond to an

average of 160 call per year with their five rescue vehicles. On May 17, the Minerva emergency squads will visit students at Minerva Central School as part of a national week of recognition for fire and emergency prevention. “One of our most important jobs is to teach younger generations how to prevent fires and emergencies from happening in the first place,” said Corey. Minerva emergency squads can often be seen in the community doing their best to educate people about the importance of emergency preparedness. They host CPR classes

By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com JOHNSBURG — Throughout its seven fire departments and one rescue squad, the town of Johnsburg is host to roughly 150 volunteers who have joined these organizations to selflessly act as a support for their community. “We are here to do so much more than fight fires,” said North Creek Fire Chief Steve Studnicky. “Many of these members pour their heart and soul into the success of the departments and service to the communities,” said Studnicky. With a total of 18 trucks servicing the town of Johnsburg, the seven departments see a combined average of just under 200 calls a year. Their lone ambulance squad stays busy under Captain Corey Ouellette and has logged 195 calls to date this year. “We may only get 12 calls a year, but that’s 12 calls too many,” said Fred Comstock, fire

chief in Garnet Lake. Garnet Lake is one of the smallest departments in the town and Comstock views their purpose to be one that goes above and beyond fighting fires. He stresses the importance of a fire department’s relationship with the people it serves. “People like to get to know us,” he said. “We are like family to lot of them.” Many of the departments are seen fundraising locally for both themselves and the benefit of members of the community. They participate in numerous individual sponsorship including donating toward Johnsburg Central School scholarships, youth athletics and Camp Colby attendants. Each year, all of the Johnsburg departments collaborate on providing a 4th of July celebration at Ski Bowl Park. “All the departments work really hard to make this event happen,” said Johnsburg

Indian Lake emergency Long Lake Fire Department celebrates 75 years squads thrive on community support

The Indian Lake Fire Department By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com INDIAN LAKE — Emergency squads in Indian Lake wouldn’t exist, or at best, wouldn’t be as successful without the dedicated support they receive from their community, according to Chief Chris Mitchell. He and rescue squad Captain Dan McFadden both appreciate the support they receive both financially and otherwise from members of the local community. “We are volunteer organizations and we wouldn’t survive without the kind of energy we get from the town of Indian Lake,” said Mitchell. His 30 active volunteer members see about 50 calls per year. “We wouldn’t make it to any of those calls if people weren’t wiling to drop everything and come help at a moments notice,” said Mitchell.

In thanks for the support they receive, the emergency squads do their best to give back to the local community in various fashions. The fire department sponsors various scholarships for local students in collaboration with its auxiliary. Mitchell noted how pivotal the auxiliary is in helping his department to be successful. “Their work is truly selfless,” he said. “They are the best kind of volunteers.” Aside from the support they provide for the community, Indian Lake emergency squads play a very practical roll in in the safety of the community. “Volunteers are the only way this town would have a fire or rescue squad,” said Mitchell. “There is no money anywhere to support a paid group.” If interested in joining an Indian Lake emergency squad, contact the chief or captain directly.

LONG LAKE — This year marks the 75th year that the Long Lake Volunteer Fire Department has been serving its local community. Shawn Wright has been leading the department as chief for 10 years and is excited about what the department has accomplished over the past 75 years. “We have come a long way,” he said. The department has seen the community lose a lot, he said, referring to the Blarney Stone Restaurant that was destroyed by fire last Memorial Day, but they have been fortunate enough to save a lot as well, he acknowledged. A 75th anniversary celebration has been planned for the weekend of July 23. A waterball tournament will highlight the event, which will culminate with fireworks. The fire department joins with the local rescue squad un-

der the leadership of captain Donald Howe to fulfill one goal - the safety of the community. The fire department alone receives roughly 40-45 calls per year. Not only is safety one of the squads’ main priorities, but they also seek to be an example of the importance of volunteering. “It is a positive thing for the younger generation to see that being a volunteer is still important,” said Wright. The Long Lake Fire Department has one of the most successful local junior programs. Currently, five of their 30 total members are juniors. “We can’t forget to teach these young people what it means to be a volunteer and to do something for the good of other people,” said Wright. The department makes sure to donate to local scholarships and to encourage its members to take part in local community service activities. If interested in joining the Long Lake fire or rescue squads, contact their chief or captain directly.

Johnsburg EMS From page 11 chief Barry Aldrich. “It’s nice to see all of us working together on something besides fighting fires.” Recently, such fundraising paid off in a big way for the Wevertown Fire Department. They were able to purchase a new truck to replace their existing truck, which was built in the 1980’s. They received the new tanker last week. “This is a real big deal for us,” said chief Jarret Brown. “We are not only proud that we could make this happen, but are excited to be able to better serve in times of emergency.” Despite their size, local departments recognize the important roll they play in securing the safety of the 206.7 square miles of land in the town of Johnsburg. “Time is important when fighting fires,” said Bakers Mills chief Lewis Hitchcock. “There is too much space in this town to rely on another town or one department.” “We are so spread out that one department wouldn’t save much of anything,” said North River Chief John Donohue. Riverside Chief, Bob Frevele also noted the impracticality of a paid company. “The town budget couldn’t afford to support a paid company,” he said. If the taxpayers had to pay for 24/7 ambulance service alone, it would cost a minimum of $380,000 per year to station one two-person crew. That volunteer spirit has spilled over from local fire departments in school with junior fire fighter programs as well as into local communities through auxiliary groups. “Our auxiliary keeps us going,” said Donohue. “They are always willing to be here and to help us out with anything we need.” “These people were born to volunteer,” said Frevele. Through March, members of the rescue squad have already logged over 2,000 volunteer hours. “Volunteers are the backbone of our agency,” said emergency squad board member Kelly Nessle. If interested in volunteering with a Johnsburg fire or rescue squad, contact a chief or captain directly to find out where you can be used.

Minerva EMS From page 10 in Minerva to get local community members interested in CPR as a lifesaving tool. “Our main goal is obviously to save lives and prevent emergencies from happening,” said Corey. “But we also want to be seen as a positive asset to the community on a day-to-day basis.” The group takes part in the Minerva Christmas Bazaar each year and also sponsors a Minerva Day softball game against the Johnsburg Rescue Squad. “It’s a pretty serious business, but we like to have fun where we can,” said Corey. If interested in joining one of Minerva’s emergency squads, contact the chief or captain directly.
