Johnsburg approves contingency budget By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com JOHNSBURG — Nearly every chair in the Johnsburg Central School (JCS) cafetorium was home to a body on Tuesday evening as the JCS school board addressed the issue of their recently failed budget. At the conclusion, the board voted to approve its proposed contingency budget for the 2010-2011 school year. On May 18, the proposed budget failed by a margin of 264-408. That budget proposed a .95 percent spending increase and a 4-5 percent tax levy increase. The increases were met with much community opposition over the past several weeks. A citizens budget committee formed to protest tax increases with members including Bruce Ashline, Pat Cunningham,

David Braley, George Heim, Sally Heidrich, Bert Miner, Tony Moro, Susan Murante, Margaret Prashaw, Carol Richards and Richard Stewart. The contingency plan includes and $10,062,415 total budget, which translates to a .67 percent or $67,153 increase from the 2009-2010 budget. These changes present a 3.5-4.5 percent tax levy increase to $5,918,217. During Tuesday’s meeting, the board presented three options including putting the

original proposed budget back up to vote, putting an amended budget that would have included significant personnel and program cuts to a vote or — David Braley approving the proposed contingency budget. “We have received many request to put the original budget back up to vote,” said Superintendent Mike Markwica. The contingency budget, however, was approved unanimously, but not without considerable conversation. “We weighed the long term effects of the

Tannery Pond welcomes “The Power of Masks” Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK – Tannery Pond Community Center will feature an exhibition entitled “The Power of Masks” - international youth art and artifacts from the World Awareness Children's Museum in Glens Falls in the Widlund Gallery from May 29 through June 23. The meaning of masks in societies all over the world will be revealed through the accompanying A sample of the mask exhibition to be interpretation text displayed at TPCC during the month of panels provided by June. The exhibition will also include masks from Japan, Ghana, Puerto Rico, Bali, Venezuela and Costa Rica. “This is a unique show and we are honored to have it displayed at Tannery Pong,” said Elise Widlund. The art pieces from the Museum’s International Youth Art Exchange Program will include paintings and drawings from Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Nigeria, Lithuania, Brazil, Poland, Bulgaria, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates, and Romania. Four roles that masks play are explored in the exhibit, on a continuum from the sacred to the secular: transformation, identification, drama and disguise.

By Mike Corey denpubs@denpubs.com MINERVA — Volunteers from the Minerva Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad descended on Minerva Central School May 20 to bring awareness of the importance of emergency first aid to as many students as possible. Students from pre-k to high school seniors had the chance to participate in activities that promoted the need for good first aid and an understanding of some of the equipment that is used in medical emergencies. The activities were all part of EMS (Emergency Medical Services) Week, a

national effort to bring awareness to kids and adults of the importance of good emergency medical care. Minerva squad members first visited elementary classrooms, bringing with them items such as stethoscopes, blood pressure cuffs, splints and other equipment. The idea was to give the kids some hands-on experience with some of the same things that EMS personnel use. “Cool” was one of the most heard comments from the students during the elementary room activities. Fun things like coloring books, pencils, stickers and junior EMT hats were given out to all the kids at the end of the visits. From the elementary classes, rescue squad members moved on to the MCS

gymnasium, where they met with middle and high school students to talk about the importance of EMS followed by a series of participatory activities. The students were able to engage in three different emergency first aid scenario demonstrations: a serious bleeding injury, a possible broken arm, and a combination fall/head injury. Students were genuinely involved in the activities, whether on the elementary, middle school, or high school level. From the most basic thing (like calling 911) to other first aid activities, students got a chance to participate in scenarios and handle EMS equipment. Most importantly, awareness of the need for emergency services readiness surfaced.

Volunteers wanted to help with cemetery upkeep Johnsburg EMS news Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com JOHNSBURG — Local volunteers in the town of Johnsburg have come together and formed a committee to assist in the maintenance of the 28 cemeteries that exist in the town. Currently, the mowing of the cemeteries is done by the parks and recreation department, but they have little extra time to accomplish the other necessary duties. Because of this, underbrush is overrunning many of the plots, stones have toppled, graves have sunken, requiring significant attention. Johnsburg residents Judy Brown and Cherie Ferguson have stepped forward to organize the committee and hope that other interested persons will lend a hand. “The cemeteries range in size from just a handful of stones like those located off Oven Mt. Road and Bartman Road, to massive sites like Union in North Creek and Bates in Johnsburg, and everything in between,” said Ferguson. “They generate a lot of work.” Once assembled, the committee will break into groups and start to work on

each cemetery. “We have a handful of community members who are willing to help and we are looking for more,” said Ferguson.

Art and Nature Camp 2010 gearing up for Native American Program NORTH CREEK — The theme for this July’s Tannery Pond Community Center Association Art and Nature Camp will be “Native American Art and Inspiration.” Director Kate Hartley, who studied Navajo art and culture for two years in Arizona, will be joined by Mohawk storyteller and author Darren Bonaparte. He will present a special “Wampum Chronicles” talk about the First American tribes who still reside in our region and

about the wampum belts they created to represent important events and treaties. Replicas of wampum belts, made by Bonaparte, will be on display at the event. Children ages 4-18 will explore many native crafts at the camp this summer, including stone carving, birch-

bark canoes, basket and dreamcatcher weaving, and beadwork. “Big Kids”, ages 10-18 will create large soapstone carvings, and will make and weave on their own beading looms. JOHNSBURG — The Johnsburg Emergency Squad is considered a 24/7 ALS (Advanced Life Support) agency. It is a designation that signifies that JES, Inc. provides the highest level of emergency care with paid or volunteer staff members, who are highly trained and legally able to dispense drugs. ALS care 24/7 is worth 17,472 hours in ambulance crew time. This first third of 2010 has been busy for the 25 active volunteers who have logged 2,093 volunteer hours through March. They have had 195 calls to date. Of those, the duty crew has responded to 100 percent of the first calls dispatched; the volunteers have been able to respond to all but one of second or third simultaneous calls. Throughout the winter ski season, many members signed up for extra duty on the weekends and throughout vacation days to cover Gore Mt. emergencies. The volunteers with the top hours have been Corey Ouellette, captain with 92 hours in Jan.; Tonya Leddick with 78 hours in Feb.; and Donna Georgopoulos with 126 hours in March. The Johnsburg EMS increased its number of people stepping up to become new volunteers. Eight people were added to the roster since January. Some are drivers, some are aides, some are trained EMTs. The agency also needs volunteers who could form an auxiliary corps—people who might service the ambulance, maintain the station, do administrative tasks, organize and execute fundraisers. An EMS auxiliary would be the supportive arm that the emergency medical volunteers could lean on. At present, JES is looking for people to help provide nonemergency transports to and from the hospital. These transports usually occur between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. during the day and a volunteer would sign up to be available on a particular day to take a transport if one were called for. Anyone wishing to serve by driving (without lights and siren) should contact Trish Bibby, transport coordinator at 251- 3521. Another type of volunteer effort has been a grant request for $400,000 to the NYS Community Development and Building Renewal department that JES, working through the Town of Johnsburg and Warren County Planning, recently submitted. It is anticipated that the award will allow the agency to construct new headquarters at a lot on the old Great Eastern sawmill site. The Sweet family, owners of the old saw mill land, has made a generous offer to Johnsburg Emergency Squad, Inc. through the auspices of Mark Bergman, realtor. Volunteers are the backbone of this agency. If the taxpayers had to pay for 24/7 service, it would cost a minimum of $380,000 per year to station one two-person crew with an ambulance. The contribution by JES volunteers, in strictly monetary terms, is worth $320,000 to the Town of Johnsburg. Call 251-2244 to volunteer in some capacity to support the Johnsburg Emergency Squad.

JOHNSBURG — A writer with deep roots in local communities will soon make her rounds in Thurman and North Creek. Gloria Waldron Hukle will present, “The American Series Born Grave-Side in Warren County,” a free talk highlighted by local history. She will tell how research led her to discover her Adirondack ancestors and to three novels. HPV is a common virus that is easily spread by skin-to-skin contact during sexual activity with another person. It is possible to have HPV without knowing it. HPV is the main cause of cervical cancer in woman as well as genital warts in men and women. This supply of vaccine is being offered to young men and women, 19 – 26 years of age, who have not received 3 doses of this vaccine. Pneumococcal Polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV) - Pneumococcal disease is caused by bacteria. It is the leading cause of vaccine-preventable illness and death in the United States. Anyone can get pneumococcal disease, but some people are at greater risk than others such as people 65 years and older, the very young, individuals with certain health problems, ones with weaken immune system or smokers. Usually only one dose of the vaccine is needed, but under some circumstances a second dose may be given on a physician’s recommendation. T-DAP - Children 6 years of age and younger are routinely vaccinated against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis. But older children, adolescents, and adults need protection from these diseases too. Td (Tetanus, Diphtheria) and Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) vaccines provide that protection. TETANUS (Lockjaw) causes painful muscle spasms, usually all over the body. It can lead to tightening of the jaw muscles so the victim cannot open his mouth or swallow. Tetanus kills about 1 out of 5 people who are infected. DIPHTHERIA causes a thick covering in the back of the throat. It can lead to breathing problems, paralysis, heart failure, and even death. PERTUSSIS (Whooping Cough) causes severe coughing spells, vomiting, and disturbed sleep. • It can lead to weight loss, incontinence, rib fractures and passing out from violent coughing. Up to 2 in 100 adolescents and 5 in 100 adults with Pertussis are hospitalized or have complications, including pneumonia. These three diseases are all caused by bacteria. Diphtheria and Pertussis are spread from person to person. Tetanus enters the body through cuts, scratches, or wounds. It is recommended that adults receive at least one booster of T-Dap. BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE — The Adirondack Museum is the recent recipient of a $10,000 grant from NBT Bank in Lake Placid. The funding will be paid in two installments and will support a new exhibit, "Woods and Waters Kid Zone," scheduled to open in May 2011. “NBT Bank, as a community bank, focuses on supporting organizations that will likely have the greatest impact on the communities we serve,” according to Camilla Palumbo, NBT vice president and branch manager. “In our recommendation and decision-making process for charitable giving, we involve employees who are directly serving our

communities.” NBT support activities include a wide range of needs, from capital campaigns to event sponsorships. In addition, they encourage their employees to volunteer their time and energy to make their communities better places to live. They also help with fundraising for non-profits, hold seats on non-profit boards, belong to service clubs, and assist with planning community events. The Adirondack Museum's new exhibit, "Woods & Waters Kid Zone" will celebrate the outdoors through creative play. The exhibition will be designed to engage the museum's youngest visitors and connect children

with the history of outdoor recreation in the Adirondacks. Immersive exhibit environments will evoke familiar North Country scenes in all seasons - a campsite, trout stream, wooded trail, snowy path, and a cozy backwoods cabin - all brought to life with the scents, sounds, and textures of the natural world. "Woods & Waters Kid Zone" will be a permanent exhibit, reflecting the museum's dedication to presenting history in new and exciting ways. The exhibition will meet the needs of families, create imaginative play areas for children, and lay the foundation for a lifelong love of the Adirondacks.

Long Lake Central School announces valedictorian and salutatorian awards LONG LAKE — Long Lake Central School has announced that the recipients of this year ’s valedictorian and salutatorian awards are Colleen Nerney and Jordan Wallace. In a class of eight seniors, Nerney is the valedictorian with a current average of 94.12. Colleen plans on attending St. Lawrence University as a recipient of the Augsbury Scholarship. She intends to major in education. Colleen’s extracurricular activities have included soccer, basketball, band, jazz band, student council, National Honor Society and various plays and musicals both at school and at the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts (ALCA). She has participated in CASMA All County and Northeast Music Festivals throughout high school. She has served as student council secretary, class secretary and class president. Colleen was awarded the Long Lake Central School Musician of the

Year in 2007 and 2009. She was awarded the 2008 Peacemaker Award, the Most Improved Player for 2008 in soccer and Honorable Mention for artwork at the Lake Placid Juried Art Exhibit. She has been an active volunteer working for such organizations as ALCA and Adirondack Abilities and at events like Adopt-A-Highway, Parents as Reading Partners, Community CleanUp Day as well as several other student-organized events to raise funds for groups like the local fire de-

partment, breast cancer awareness and earthquake victims in Haiti. Colleen is the daughter of Michael and Camille Nerney of Long Lake. Wallace is the salutatorian with a current average of 93.71. Jordan plans on attending the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry and majoring in construction management. Jordan’s extracurricular activities have included baseball, basketball, soccer, National Honor Society and student council. He has

served as both student council president and class president. He was awarded 1st Team All-League in baseball, 2nd Team All-League in soccer, Most Valuable Player for soccer in 2009, Long Lake Central School Athlete of the Year in 2009 and has received Scholar/Athlete individual awards from 20072009. Jordan will graduate with six college credits taken online from Tompkins Cortland Community College. Jordan has also been an active volunteer with organizations such as the Long Lake Volunteer Fire Department and the Long Lake Fish and Game Club and at events like Adopt-A-Highway, Community Clean-Up Day and several other student-organized events. Jordan is the son of Gregg and Nancy Wallace of Long Lake, New York. Congratulations to both students. The school and community are very proud of their accomplishments.

News orry to hear about the death of Sherry Wolfe's dad. Gary, Sherry and boys are in South Carolina with family. Josh and Melanie Kennedy are the proud parents of a baby girl, Kannyon Dawn born May 16. She weighed 7 lbs. 3.5 oz. and was 20.5 in. long. Jonas Semmens was the honored guests at a party on Sunday to celebrate his third birthday. The gathering was at his home in New Jersey. Parents are Joseph and Heather Allen Semmens. Earl Allen and Dezore Cleveland were dinner guests at the home of Mr and Mrs Gary McGinn in Lake Pleasant. Dezore was thrilled to go on a long horse ride. Many attended to concert at the North River Methodist Church on Friday night with Wade Hammond from Alabama. Ryan and Keisha Sprague and children, Dezore, Khaleah and Yanden held an open house on Sunday afternoon in Schroon Lake. Many enjoyed the tour of the home and the cookout. Neil and Ronda Dunkley and granddaughter, Vasanti are enjoying visiting family and friends in Tennessee. Shanna Whitney is in Germany for work. She is still in the Armed Forces. While there she is enjoying all the different sites. Kelly Fuller and Apple Wright and family appreciate more than words can say to everyone who helped in any way when they lost everything in a house fire. nfortunately, to many, Memorial Day means little more than an optional parade and then it’s off to the malls for Memorial Day sales. I hope many of the readers of this column will take some time this weekend to reflect on the sacrifices made by all our veterans over the years and perhaps visit a local cemetery. There are 11 cemeteries in Johnsburg Township, including Bates and Hack on Goodman Road in Johnsburg, Kenwell and Methodist on each side of the Johnsburg Methodist Church on South Johnsburg Road, The North River Cemetery on Cemetery Road off of 13th Lake Road, St. James and Union Cemeteries in North Creek, The Mill Creek Wesleyan Cemetery on Garnet Lake Rd, and the Wevertown Cemetery on Rt 28, north of Wevertown. There are also two family cemeteries, including the Pasco Cemetery on South Johnsburg Road near the Thurman line and the Jarius Westcott Cemetery, a lovely site 150 feet north of the intersection of Armstrong Road and Bartman Road in Bakers Mills. Of all these, the Mill Creek Wesleyan Cemetery needs the most sprucing up. An informal group of neighbors out this way have expressed an interest in seeing that work done, but apparently there is a real question as to who owns the property and who is responsible for the care of that cemetery. Buried in that cemetery are Civil War veterans Fred Gearing and a group I have listed in my earlier columns, including Rev. John Bartman, Henry Flansburg, James Flansburg, Dudley Hewitt, John Jones Jr., and Charles Stackhouse.

In the Jarius Wescott Cemetery is a single headstone for Civil War veteran Jarius Westcott, his wife and three children, two of which died on Christmas Day in 1880. His wife Francis died the following year. Jarius lived until 1923.

Pasko (Pasco), Leander Birth date unknown, son of Elihu (age 65 in the 1860 Johnsburg Census) and Nancy (maiden name unknown). Served in Co. I of the 96th NYVI and died May, 10 1890.

In the Pasco Family Cemetery are buried: Galusha, Morgan Born 1850, son of Abiram and Sarah (Ward). There is an Abiram Galusha who was a Revolutionary War veteran who died in 1851, when Morgan would have been one and is perhaps his grandfather. Abiram is buried in the Wevertown Cemetery. Morgan served in Co. I of the 6th NY Volunteer Infantry. If the birth date is correct, Morgan would have been only 11 when the war broke out. Morgan died July, 29 1877 at age 27.

Some ideas regarding the JCS budget To the News Enterprise: There are a few things that I would like to say about the school budget at JCS. No one wants the education of the youth of this community to suffer. The leading argument to pass the budget was, "don't you care about education?". There are several things that could be done that do not effect the children whatsoever. If we combined the kindergarten classes to free up a teacher for the pre-kindergarten program, it would save the district a minimum of $70,000. Now, this is when the, "we need small class sizes to teach the right way" argument gets brought up. Yes, requirements are tougher now than they were before, but if a kindergarten teacher can not handle 20 kids, they should not be a teacher. There are no state tests for kindergarten. Let's all remember that they would not be alone - there are countless aides and helpers on hand. I haven't heard anyone but the superintendent taking a pay freeze and I don't believe life insurance for employees dictates how well our children are educated. My question is why when everyone says they are worried about the children it is always the children's programs like sports and music that are threatened, not bonuses and extra staffing? The tournament is a fundraiser for the class and the proceeds will go toward paying for their senior trip. Tee-off will be at 9 a.m. The cost of $55 per person includes 18 holes of golf, a cart, a buffetstyle lunch, and great prizes, including a prize for a hole-inone. “Spectacular scenery and challenging golf combine to make High Peaks Golf Course one of the most enjoyable

Center needs food delivery volunteer NORTH CREEK – The North Country Outreach Center has been able to provide fresh produce and other healthy perishable pantry items to those in need throughout the area twice a month, largely due to the volunteer efforts of Don Lasher. Lasher has recently injured his back and although still able to make these trips, he cannot load or unload the items from his truck. oose River Plains is a sprawling expanse of beautiful forests and sparkling waterways that unfolds like a vast tundra between the small Adirondack towns of Inlet on the west and Indian Lake on the east. Connecting the two is a 40-mile stretch of dirt roads that is perhaps the most wild and scenic Adirondack roadway accessible to motor vehicles. That is, until now. The DEC — facing staggering cuts in the governor ’s proposed budget — has announced it will close the roads through Moose River Plains, as well as a handful of other roads leading into ponds, campsites and hiking trails. The problem, they say, is a lack of funding to maintain and patrol the areas. Gates across these roads will remain locked indefinitely - although the areas remain open to hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders because of the wilderness classifications there. Trout ponds stocked by the state in the area like Bear, Squaw, Lost, Helldiver, Icehouse and Mitchell will be all but cutoff to the outside world. Perhaps the most disturbing part of this decision, though, is the fact that it slams the door on anyone except the most physically fit from utilizing these areas. At the same time, officials of Inlet and Indian Lake say the decision will mean a significant financial blow as the thousands who utilize the area every year for hunting and fishing chose other locations to spend their cash. Handicap access has long been a tremendous problem in the Adirondacks, as was evidenced by the state losing a lawsuit over the issue a few years ago. Under the terms of the suit, the state was required to increase handicapped accessibility, and one of the areas where they did so was Moose River Plains. In the past two years they have built more than a dozen handicapped accessible fishing and camping sites there. All of which are now inaccessible to the handicapped. At the same time, allowing the roadways to be open to the non-motoring public creates its own problems, according to Indian Lake Supervisor Barry Hutchins. “Our main concern aside from losing the tourism dollars is search and rescue,” Hutchins said, noting that local volunteers are often summoned to help lost or hurt individuals in Moose River Plains. “Will we get a key to drive emergency vehicles in there, and if so, will the roads be passable with no maintenance?” he questioned.

Hutchins said he and his colleague, Inlet Supervisor John Frey, are so concerned about the loss of revenue to their towns and the precarious situation it puts them in for rescues that they offered to maintain the roads with their own highway crews. They also offered to help the state patrol the area, or pay a portion of its patrol costs, but the DEC is standing firm on its decision. “If it was a big money issue, I could understand,” Hutchins said. “But this to me is a no brainer. It would cost the state no money to open those gates.” But DEC officials disagree. DEC Spokesman David Winchell said in the past, two assistant forest rangers and one operations staff were assigned full-time to maintain and patrol the Moose River Plains corridor. Winchell noted that the assistant forest ranger program has been eliminated in the 2010-11 state budget, and said regional operations staff has been significantly reduced. “New York State, and therefore DEC, do not have a budget at this time. The budget extender bills do not include funds for non-personnel service. DEC has no fiscal year 2010 funding for work. These factors clearly underscore the fact that at this time DEC does not have the resources to maintain a high use areas such as the Moose River Plains Road System and the other roads that we announced will remain closed,” Winchell said. Other roads that will remain closed include Lily Pond Road in Horicon; Jabe Pond Road in Hague; Gay Pond Road and Buttermilk Road Extension in Warrensburg and Dacy Clearing Road in Fort Ann. Warren County supervisors are also irate over the road closures, citing longtime visitors to the area arriving only to find their favorite camping locales inaccessible. Winchell did say the DEC welcomes discussions with the affected municipalities in an effort to formulate a plan to open the gates. Crown Point defeated two local teams this week and went on to sweep the boys and girls MVAC Championships. The Lady Orange made it to the final, but couldn’t hold on and fell 4-2. The Mountaineers lost a tight contest to Schroon Lake, who went on to fall to Crown Point for the title. Section VII Class D brackets were released this week and teams will move on to sectional play.

Boys Baseball Schroon Lake 1 Minerva-Newcomb 0 KEENE — Schroon Lake moved onto the Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference championship on May 20 with a 1-0 win over division III champs, the Mountaineers. Anthony Vanderwalker scored on a balk in the second inning and Mountaineers couldn’t rally against the Wildcats. Wednesday's game came down to a pitching duel between the Wildcats' Lance Paradis and the Mountaineers' Tatsuki Miyazato. Paradis struck out nine, walked four and gave up three infield hits. Miyazato returned 14 to the dugout, walked one and allowed three hits. "It was a great baseball game, with great pitching and no errors," said Schroon Lake coach Mike Sharp. "It's a shame it was decided on a balk, but we put ourselves in position to take advantage." Minerva-Newcomb threatened the lead in the sixth when Miyazato singled and stole second. He was then tagged on the way to third off a ground ball. No player on either team had two hits — three players rapped singles for both clubs. CROWN POINT — Lindsay Brace pitched a two-hitter with 14 strikeouts to lead Crown Point to a win and the MVAC Championship over the Orange on May 21. Brace walked only two, but had to overcome four Panther errors, including two in the seventh. After Indian Lake/Long Lake scored an unearned run to make it 4-2, Brace struck out the next two batters, leaving a runner on second and the tying run at the plate. "Brace had a good game. It was really hard for us to put our bats on the ball," Indian Lake/Long Lake Coach David Olbert said. "We stayed with them until the sixth inning — that was the difference in the game, that one inning.” Kaylie Miller allowed six hits while striking out six and walking none for the Orange. Indian Lake/Long Lake scored first, getting both of their hits in the first inning. Emma Gray delivered a one-out single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and later scored on Miller's RBI base hit.
