Moose River Plains Road open to motor vehicles INDIAN LAKE — Thanks to a creative state-local partnership, the Moose River Plains Road, which provides access to one of the largest blocks of remote lands in the Adirondack Park will be open to motor vehicles this summer, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) commissioner Pete Grannis announced today. "The Moose River Plains Road will be open for 2010, thanks to the willingness of local communities to help and the quick reaction of DEC crews to make it happen," Grannis said. "Together, we've forged a solution that will benefit the anglers, birders, hunters, hikers, mountain bikers and others who make the Plains a popular destination – as well as the businesses in Indian Lake and Inlet that depend on tourists." DEC worked with local officials from Inlet, Indian Lake and Hamilton County, as well as state legislators, to cover maintenance duties and costs for the season. The Moose River Plains includes more than 40 miles of dirt roads, approximately 170 primitive campsites and 50,000 acres of wild forest in the central and southwestern sections of the park. DEC had previously announced that this road would not be opened in 2010 because the state's historic fiscal crisis had limited agency maintenance funds. Instead, local communities will assist by providing gasoline, trucks, materials and law-enforcement personnel to help cover operational needs. State and local crews began clearing the road last week and opened in on Friday - in time for the Memorial Day weekend. However, roads south of the "Big T" junction (Otter Brook and Indian Lake roads) will remain closed.

By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com LONG LAKE — A sophomore at Long Lake Central School, Margaret (Meg) Smith is wasting no time in getting her name in print. She was recently awarded accolades in the Great Adirondack Poetry Contest with her poem entitled “Llamas.” The piece was printed in the contest’s publication, Words From the Woods. Smith wrote the poem in response to an assignment from Long Lake English teacher Mike Farrell that involved writing a poem about family last year. She chose to write about her grandfather, who was a mining engineer in Peru and more specifically, his mother. “She was a strong lady - living in Peru with no friends,” said Smith of her great grandmother. “I never met her, but I would have liked to.” Aside from having her poem published, Smith received a scholarship to the Champlain College Young Writers Conference at Champlain College in Burlington, which she

attended last week. The conference is designed for dedicated young writers and offers an opportunity for them to meet others who share their passion for telling the stories of their lives and to study the craft with some of New England's most celebrated authors and teachers. Smith is the daughter of Hallie Bond and Mason Smith and is no stranger to writing - it is in her blood. Mason is a published novelist and has published works centered around his experiences living in the Adirondacks. Outside the classroom, Smith turns to writing as a hobby as well. “Poetry is a creative outlet for me and I do it not just because it is assigned in school,” she said. Farrell encouraged Smith to submit some of her work to the conMargaret Smith with Words From the test and admitted he would have Woods, the book that her poem “Llamas” been surprised if she had not won. was published in. “She is probably the best writer

Educators ‘Get Out and Play’ in Newcomb By Mike Corey denpubs@denpubs.com NEWCOMB - They gathered small sticks for a campfire, chased soccer-like balls around the gym with their toes, made “food” items out of birch bark and pine needles, and tossed rubber chickens and fake fish at each other. These weren’t kids, they were actually adult educators, behaving like kids, and they were in the middle of learning new games and ways of having fun in order to bring new ideas back to the kids they work with. The event was the “Get Out and Play!” conference, held at Newcomb Central School. It was hosted by the SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry’s (ESF) Northern Forest Institute along with Children in Nature New York. The Newcomb Central School Class of 2013 provided lunch for all participants. Nearly 30 people from all over the state attended the event, which was comprised of a series of hands-on workshops. It was loaded with activities introduced by presenters, who are experts in the field of encouraging children to return to the world of free play and creative self-expression. “Our society is teaching young people to avoid direct experience in nature. Well-meaning public school systems, media, and parents are effectively scaring children straight out of the woods and fields,” according to Richard Louv, the author of the 2005 book Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder.

Adirondack Museum to participate in Blue Star Museums program By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE — The Adirondack Museum is one of more than 600 museums to offer free admission to military personnel and their families this summer. They recently announced the launch of "Blue Star Museums," a partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, and other museums across America to offer free admission to all active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2010. “The ‘Blue Star Museums’ program is an excellent way to recognize our service men, women, and their families," said Caroline M. Welsh, director of the Adirondack Museum. "We look forward to welcoming them throughout the summer months." The free admission program is available to active duty military and their immediate family

Poetry From page 1 I've taught in my 33 years here at LLCS,” he said. “It has little to do with me, however.” Farrell noted that Smith arrived in his classroom as a seventh grade student with the writing skills of a college student. “Her parents and elementary teachers are the ones who deserve the credit for her brilliance,” said Farrell. “I have simply tried to stay out of her way.” Despite Smith’s dedication to writing, she is looking in another direction for her future. She hopes to continue her passion for the arts, however, and one day become a costume and set designer in college. “I just love everything about art,” she said. Margaret Smith’s winning poem: Llamas In the black-and-white days of long ago, When my grandfather was only nine and a different person, Untouched by sorrow He lived in the snow-capped, mist-shrouded mountains of Peru Where the air was scarce And bridges made of string and toothpicks spanned the gorges. He and his mother, fiery and determined, Like the llamas that roamed the mountain-

members (military ID holder and five immediate family members), which includes active duty Reserve and active duty National Guard. Some special or limited-time museum exhibits may not be included in this free admission program. "America's museums are proud to join the rest of the country in thanking our military personnel and their families for their service and sacrifice," said National Endowment for the Arts chairman Rocco Landesman. "I cannot imagine a better way to do that than welcoming them to explore and enjoy the extraordinary cultural heritage our museums present." Blue Star Families is a national, non-partisan, non-profit network of military families from all ranks and services including guard and reserve, with a mission to support, connect and empower military families. In addition to morale and empowerment programs, Blue Star Families raises awareness of the challenges and strengths of military family life with civilian community and leaders. Membership includes spouses,

kids, parents, service members, veterans and civilians. Operation Appreciation is an initiative of Blue Star Families that seeks to connect military families to the larger community. Blue Star Families 2009 annual survey shows that 94 percent of military families feel that the larger community doesn't truly understand or appreciate the sacrifices we make for the country. "There have always been wonderful examples of partnerships between museums and military installations, but the scale of this gift from the museum communities to military families is thrilling," said Blue Star Families chairman Kathy Roth-Douquet. In addition to being chairman of Blue Star Families, Roth-Douquet is married to a Marine Corps officer, who is currently deployed to Afghanistan. They have two children, and RothDouquet and the children plan to take a road trip this summer to visit Blue Star Museums up and down the East Coast.

In the night, when the cold Andes air Could freeze the marrow in their very bones, They snuggled together in a single bed Wearing scarves and mittens, Breathing smoke. Grandma Jean refused to give in to the cold, whistling South American wind. She sat up against the sheet metal wall And read, by the light of a kerosene lamp, classic literature - The Arabian Nights, or Treasure Island To her bundled little family. At midnight, she would close the novel And listen as her strong voice bounced once more Off the walls of the gorge that enclosed her world, And think that even though The native women would not accept her, Even though her husband’s job was dangerous And there were tarantulas, She would persevere like the llamas, The tough llamas, dressed in warm wool, grazing the sparse grass outside.

"Military families work hard for this country, and it is gratifying for us to be recognized for that,” she said. “We anticipate that thousands of military families will participate in the program and visit museums this summer - many of them for the first time." In addition to 30 children's museums across the country, participating museums represent a broad range of art, history, science, and cultural topics - from the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas, to the California Surf Museum in Oceanside, California. This is the latest Arts Endowment program to bring quality arts programs to the military, veterans, and their families. Other NEA programs for the military have included Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience, Great American Voices Military Base Tour, and Shakespeare in American Communities Military Base Tour. From page 1 "Commissioner Grannis and the DEC staff moved heaven and earth to coordinate this effort and get us to a point where the road can be opened this weekend – which not something we thought could be done," said Bill Farber, who serves as Morehouse town supervisor and chairman of the Hamilton County Board of Supervisors. "This is a great example of local and state officials coming together, working cooperatively and achieving a positive result," said state Senator Betty Little. "It's the kind of teamwork that is so important during this time of fiscal crisis.“ Grannis and his staff understood what was at stake. Losing the economic activity generated by the thousands of hikers, campers, sportsmen, mountain bikers and other tourists who visit the Moose River Plains would have dealt a severe financial blow to Hamilton County communities. The Moose River Plains Wild Forest is bounded on the north by the Pigeon Lakes Wilderness Area, Raquette Lake and the Blue Ridge Wilderness; on the east and the south by the West Canada Lakes Wilderness and the private lands of the Adirondack League Club; and on the west by the Fulton Chain Lakes and State Route 28. It includes the Red River, the South Branch of the Moose River and the 675-acre Cedar River Flow. The Moose River Plains Wild Forest offers many year-round recreational opportunities, including hiking, skiing, mountain biking, snowmobiling, canoeing, hunting, fishing, horseback riding and primitive camping. Miles of marked trails and numerous lakes and ponds make this area an ideal destination for recreationists with varied interests and abilities.

News o many enjoyed the past two weekends at the train station in North Creek. The children really enjoyed seeing Thomas the Train. Great to have in the area. The weekend was the celebration of Memorial Day. Hope you all remembered the ones that are serving or have served. Also, the ones that lost their lives. We remember them and their family. It was wonderful to see so many flags flying for this holiday. Flags were also hanging from the walkway overpass on exit 22 on the Northway. Because of last Wednesday's high heat and severe storm there were two forest fires started from lightning. With quick attention, the fire did not spread to any homes.

Johnsburg Goes to War: 1861-1865 W

inslow Homer is generally acknowledged as one of America’s premier 19th Century artists and here in the Adirondacks he is clearly a favorite. In the 1880’s he regularly spent his summers at the Northwoods Club in Minerva and is said to have made over 24 trips to the area to paint. His watercolors of Hudson River scenes are particularly beloved. Homer, too, has Civil War connections. At age 25 he was hired by Harper ’s Weekly and sent to the front lines to sketch scenes of the war for the readers back home. His “Sharpshooter on Picket Duty” (1862), “Home Sweet Home” (1863) and “Prisoners from the Front” (1866) are his most famous works from that period. Although Winslow Homer gained much acclaimed for his “Sharpshooter on Picket Duty”, he was actually haunted by the image and said it was the closest thing to murder he could think of in connection to the war. In preparation for my “Johnsburg Goes to War” talk in September of 2011, if you have any information n any of the men listed in this week’s column, or from earlier columns, please contact me at 251-3009 or pearsall.glenn@gmail.com. Thank you.

S, 22nd NYVI, one of the earliest units to muster in at the outbreak of the war and then in Co. K, 2nd Veteran Cavalry. Survived the war and died Jan. 13, 1910. Robbins, Lewis Born April 2, 1838, Harvey’s older brother. Served in Co. A of the 93rd NY Volunteers, a regiment whose casualty list was particularly high. Survived the war and died April 28, 1927, at age 89. Tucker, John Birth date and parents unknown. Seems to have moved to the area after the war. Served in Co. E, 40th Regiment. American Legion Auxiliary seeks members To the News Enterprise: Thank you, Denton Publications for the News Enterprise, for the upper Hudson River region. I enjoy reading it very much. The beginning of the American Legion Auxiliary is celebrating its 90th year of service and support for our military veterans. Memorial Day is upon us. All the “poppies” handed out for donations have been made by disabled veterans. These contributions go directly for the relief of these veterans and families, fulfilling their needs. Here in Indian Lake, we are in need of more members to keep our American Legion Auxiliary unit 1392 going. Pride and patriotism is what we want to foster. We have a passion to help the largest women's patriotic service organization in the world from its start in 1920. The first virtues of our service men and women, along with ourselves in loyalty, it is as dear as justice is desirable, as freedom is glorious, as democracy is practical. It is right to do our utmost to keep these virtues, it is the true basis of Americanism. We are composed of citizens of every race, religion, occupation, and political convictions. We as citizens should be obligated to be strictly neutral on all questions concerning the principles of our loyalty to our nation. Our meeting time, day and place is the first Monday of the month at 3:15 p.m. at the senior citizen meal site. The next meeting is June 7. Hope you consider joining us as a member. If interested call me at 648-5517. Diane Benton President of American Legion Auxiliary unit 1392

in kids. Hai sees the participants of this conference (both presenters and educators) as “pioneers” in the movement to get kids back outside. “It’s just nice to be surrounded by other people who believe in this approach to working with kids,” said Joe San Antonio, who works with kids in Hamilton County. With the success of the first event, he believes that it was truly beneficial and that, “all participants will want to come back for more and will recommend this conference to others.” “The day was very well-organized and I loved the new games activities with all their energy and creativity,” said Kelly Nessle of Johnsburg, who has been working to provide outdoor activities for kids with the TREKS organization. Hai noted how diverse the populations of presenters and educators were, and indicated how much he appreciated their support of this very noble effort - returning kids to the world of creative play.

From page 1 informal play. Kids are needing to re-learn how to play on their own. Paul Hai, the program coordinator for the SUNY ESF Northern Forest Institute and cofounder of Children in Nature New York, organized this one-day series of hands-on workshops, along with Erin Vinson, education specialist at the Adirondack Ecological Center in Newcomb. “Kids everywhere don’t get enough naturebased play,” said Hai. “There are plenty of organized sports, but kids miss out on non-structured opportunities to play and be creative.” Fewer school recess opportunities for children combined with a general trend away from enjoying the out-of-doors may be correlated with an increase in obesity, higher drop-out rates from organized sports, and greater stress

Free Adult Immunizations Available The Hamilton County Public Health Nursing Service is pleased to announce the availability of Free Immunizations for adults residing within Hamilton County. This vaccine has been made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The supply of vaccine is limited and will be administered on a first come first serve basis. There are no income eligibility or insurance requirements. Call 518-648-6497 HPV – Human Papillomavirus Vaccine is currently available. HPV is a common virus that is easily spread by skin-to-skin contact during sexual activity with another person. It is possible to have HPV without knowing it. HPV is the main cause of cervical cancer in woman as well as genital warts in men and women. This supply of vaccine is being offered to young men and women, 19 – 26 years of age, who have not received 3 doses of this vaccine. Pneumococcal Polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV) - Pneumococcal disease is caused by bacteria. It is the leading cause of vaccine-preventable illness and death in the United States. Anyone can get pneumococcal disease, but some people are at greater risk than others such as people 65 years and older, the very young, individuals with certain health problems, ones with weaken immune system or smokers. Usually only one dose of the vaccine is needed, but under some circumstances a second dose may be given on a physician’s recommendation. T-DAP - Children 6 years of age and younger are routinely vaccinated against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis. But older children, adolescents, and adults need protection from these diseases too. Td (Tetanus, Diphtheria) and Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) vaccines provide that protection. TETANUS (Lockjaw) causes painful muscle spasms, usually all over the body. It can lead to tightening of the jaw muscles so the victim cannot open his mouth or swallow. Tetanus kills about 1 out of 5 people who are infected. DIPHTHERIA causes a thick covering in the back of the throat. It can lead to breathing problems, paralysis, heart failure, and even death. PERTUSSIS (Whooping Cough) causes severe coughing spells, vomiting, and disturbed sleep. • It can lead to weight loss, incontinence, rib fractures and passing out from violent coughing. Up to 2 in 100 adolescents and 5 in 100 adults with Pertussis are hospitalized or have complications, including pneumonia. These three diseases are all caused by bacteria. Diphtheria and Pertussis are spread from person to person. Tetanus enters the body through cuts, scratches, or wounds. It is recommended that adults receive at least one booster of T-Dap. Please call to discuss your eligibility for this immunization with a nurse. Shingles Vaccine – due to manufacturing problems, the shingles vaccine is not available. 57373
