New fence dedicated at Federal Flats Cemetery By Keith Lobdell
keith@denpubs.com OLMSTEDVILLE Saturday, May 24, was a rainy day, but this did not prevent a large crowd of family and friends from celebrating the dedication of the new fence at the Federal Flats Cemetery in Olmstedville. This beautiful new white fence was dedicated in the memory of Marion Persons, and was a gift to the Minerva Historical Society by MarionÕ s husband, Norman Persons. Marion was a very active member of the Minerva Historical Society, contributing large numbers of hours at the SocietyÕ s table at the annual Minerva Christmas Bazaar as well as covering the Minerva Society Museum in Olmstedville. The ceremony was well-attended; Minerva Historical Society Board of Trustees Ñ
Chair Nancy Shaw provided a welcome to all participants at the dedication, and Vice President (and Board of Trustees member) Ed Healy offered a dedication prayer. ABOVE: Norm Persons, who provided the gift of the fence to the Minerva Historical Society, is flanked by Nancy Shaw and Ed Healy of the Minerva Historical Society Board of Trustees.
A long time advocate and supporter of the CVW Long Lake Public Library, Loretto “Lorrie” Hosley was awarded the 2013 Library Trustee of the Year Award on Monday, May 19. The honor was bestowed by the Southern Adirondack Library System at its 56th Annual Meeting at the Excelsior in Saratoga Springs. Hosley has been a trustee of the CVW Long Lake Public Library since 2001. Prior to that, she was part of a small enthusiastic group that wanted to ensure the continuation of library services in Long Lake when the Bookmobile service was discontinued. She advocated tirelessly to raise matching funds for the NYS Construction Grant project, securing a large endowment from Mary Lou Whitney. She worked tirelessly to secure stable funding by becoming a school district public library, but that necessitated a new charter. Lorrie has been a constant, steady force with her history and knowledge and has turned the Long Lake Library into the “Little Engine That Could.” The CVW Long Lake Public Library is the central hub of the Long Lake community. NORTH CREEK Ñ The sophomore honors English program, in collaboration with board members, community members, teacher Katie OÕ Dell and Superintenent Michael Markwica, exhibited their commitment to create positive connections with the community with the 2014 Wall Of Fame. In itÕ s initial year, 2013, the district announced during graduation ceremonies a new initiative for the district and rolled out the Wall of Fame program. At that time Markwica detailed the program as a new tradition celebrating past alumni for outstanding achievements. These alumni would be listed on a Wall of Fame and receive certificates of recognition. In a move to increase student involvement, the sophomore honors English class was assigned the task of intervieiwng the inductees in a graded assignment and additionally helping put together the written portion of the Wall Of Fame exhibit. Honors students Aaron Conlon, Sara Pierson, Paige Guy, Makayla Denno and Emily Persons took the task seriously and learned many lessons along the way. Ò It was a learning experience,Ó said Galusha. “I was very nervous at first but once I got talking it improved and a sense of humor came out.Ó Six alumists are set to be honored in this years Wall Of Fame. The criteria were simple. Ò We were looking for individuals that have gone above and beyond to help the community or the school in some way,Ó said Markwica. Ò This was an honor,Ó said Pierson. Ò I just never knew that somone from North Creek could ever do and accomplish these things, I learned a lot and increased my confidence.” Indutees, whose profiles were written by the students, include:
Helen Ordway Cornwall
Professional/Career Achievements: Helen Cornwall ran the nursery at Gore Mountain Ski Center from the mountainÕ s opening in the 1960Õ s until the early 1990Õ s. Helen realized that people who came to ski were tied up with their children and she wanted to help. Ò It was a lot of fun. I worked with the little ones, and they were fun.Ó The kids were dropped off in

Professional/Career Achievements: Jane graduated from Johnsburg Central School in 1948 and then went to Albany College of Pharmacy to become a pharmacist, graduating in 1952. Jane and her husband, Frank bought Teakle Pharmacy from her parents, only working in it for a short time. In 1966, Jane became the first woman to serve on the Johnsburg Central School Board of Education. Also, Jane became the first woman to serve on the Johnsburg Zoning Board. She was also a Boy Scout leader and taught as a Sunday school teacher at the local Baptist church. She is currently a member of the North Creek Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. - written by Emily Persons

He joined the school board in 1987 and served for twenty-four years. Frank loved being involved with the students of Johnsburg. He also was interested in keeping good programs an option for all the students. Professional/Career Achievements: As a young man, Dr. Grunblatt left war-torn Poland, where he grew up speaking Yiddish, then Polish. He relocated to France, where, at the urging of his mother, he started his medical training and taught himself French. In the 1930s, he joined the Spanish Republican Army to serve in the Spanish Civil War, caring for the sick and injured. Later, as he completed his medical training, he was nearly trapped in France when World War II began in 1939. However, Dr. Grunblatt was able to flee aboard a Portuguese ship headed for Vera Cruz, Mexico, in December, 1941. He worked in medicine in Mexico for four years, picking up the English language along the way. He then was able to join two older brothers who previously had emigrated from Europe to New York City. Dr. Grunblatt obtained a New York State medical license in 1949, and worked in various hospitals, marrying wife Hilda in 1947. The two moved to the Adirondacks in July, 1949, when Dr. Grunblatt learned of the need in North Creek for a local town doctor. From his office in North Creek, he served Johnsburg, Minerva and other surrounding towns for more than two decades and was active in the North Creek Rotary Club and various medical societies. He also served as school doctor for Johnsburg Central School and Minerva Central School. Dr. Grunblatt scaled back his practice in 1975 only because of his own health concerns. - written by English 10 student Justize DeThomas and English 10 teacher Katy Odell

Resource officers: A price the Why would anyone want these jobs? county and schools can’t afford
E
ssex County Sheriff Richard Cutting is making the push yet again to re-visit the notion of deputies patrolling the halls of area schools with the designation ‘resource officer.’ Following a slew of tragic incidents of school violence Ñ from Sandy Hook to Alton, IL Ñ many districts and municipalities have been quick to make the emotional decision to place full-time law enforcement personnel in the hallways of their buildings. While Essex County schoolÕ s have been fortunate thus far, we are not blind enough to think that a tragedy is impossible in our own back yard; however, is a $72,000 county or district funded price tag the answer to maintaining a safe educational environments for our youth? In our opinion, the answer is no. The Essex County Board of Supervisors Ways and Means Committee voted 10-8 recently to allow Sherriff Cutting to apply for a Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grant that would pay up to 75 percent of the salary and benefits for four new resource officers for area schools. The remaining 25 percent of the funding would ultimately be the responsibility of the county. At a time when the county board has struggled to put a lid on spending, how can an unallocated $72,000 be a feasible request? In our opinion, it simply is not. From 1999 to 2003 resource officers patrolled the halls of schools in Ticonderoga, Moriah, Keene, Crown Point, Schroon Lake, Minerva, Newcomb, Wesport and Willsboro. CuttingÕ s request comes without a stitch of anecdotal or statistical information from the past justifying the need for these officers. It is our opinion that if resource officers are seen as a must-have by the school districts it should be a district-by-district decision and it should be paid for from their own monetary resources. With district budgets barely passing in some places it seems like a reach, a far reach. The argument can be made that with a 13 deputy department there is no reason deputies can not make stops into these districts as part of their regular routine and work day, without the need for more officers, more hours and more funding. The schools in our communities have maintained a manageable level of safety in coordinating with local law enforcement about safe practices. In Ticonderoga a multi unit drill was conducted earlier in the year to educate law enforcement, first responders, teachers and students alike to respond to internal and external threats. Efforts like those listed above would be beneficial to all districts throughout the county, but asking schools or taxpayers to pick up a tab just shy of 100K is not. Student and child safety is always at the forefront of conversation when tragedies like the one in Sand Hook occur but we can not simply continue to write checks that we have a hard time cashing. While a sum of this amount may seem like a small price to pay to deter possible criminal acts, the story will be exceedingly different in the years to come when budgetary constraints become increasingly more dire. Schools have already implemented a number of safety precautions, including zero tolerance policies, locking doors and taking any and all threats in a more serious manner. The coordination with local law enforcement already serves as a deterrent to crime Ñ a full-time, taxpayer funded bouncer is simply not a safety net we can afford. Ñ

As we approach the upcoming election season we want to make an important distinction regarding candidate endorsements. With a free distribution in excess of 60,000 homes, our papers are inundated every election cycle with candidate endorsements. The only source of revenue our community publications receive to offset the cost of print, delivery and overhead is paid notices and advertisements. All candidate endorsements must now run either in the form of an advertisement or a paid endorsement notice and include the name of the individual making the endorsement. The paid endorsement notice can be purchased for $15 for up to 50 words, or .25 cents per word thereafter. A paid advertisement will be based on standard advertising rates taking into consideration size and frequency according to the current rate card at the open advertising rate. For rates call Ashley at 873-6368 ext 105 or email ashley@denpubs.com.

Continued from page 1 Wolfe said Verhonica received plasma everyday and numerous blood transfusions, which is why the idea of a blood drive became the fuel for the event. Ò Three months after she passed we decided we wanted to do something to help others,Ó Wolfe said. Ò If not for the blood products we wouldnÕ t have had the 21 days we did with Verhonica, so we contacted Jill Ballou of the American Red Cross and set up our first blood drive.” Along with the blood drive, the event also serves as an education forum on Neonatal Hemochromatosis (NH), a rare gestational condition in which iron accumulates in the liver and extrahepatic sites of the fetus in a distribution similar to that seen in hereditary hemochromatosis. Ò We not only want to draw attention to the blood drive but the horrible disease as well since many people have never heard of it,Ó Wolfe said.
