“The Boss” to visit Indian Lake Theater By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com INDIAN LAKE — Bruce Springsteen, “The Boss,” with his E Street Band will appear larger than life at the Indian Lake Theater Friday and Saturday, June 18 - 19, 7:30 p.m. at Indian Lake Theater (ILT). His appearance at the ILT’s big screen is the result of a program that represents a new partnership for the nonprofit theater and an organization dedicated to bringing live performances to numerous venues through Internet feeds. Emerging Pictures has created a tradition of providing fans the opportunity to see the new London Calling: Live in Hyde Park show in advance of its June 22 DVD release date. A 90-minute version of the film will be showing at art house cinemas around the U.S. and London with box office proceeds will go to the Danny Fund/Melanoma Research Alliance. In nonprofit theaters, such as Indian Lake, the screenings will benefit the venues themselves.

David Paterson said the event was a landmark in the lives of citizens from both states. “This is an important step in reconnecting our two states and restoring this critical link for commerce, tourism, employment, education and medical services,” he said.
Vermont Gov. Jim Douglas offered similar remarks. “Those who live and work in the area surrounding the Lake Champlain Bridge share family, friends and business relationships on both sides of the lake,” he said. “The ease and timeliness of transportation across Lake Champlain is critical to their way of life and

JOHNSBURG — Residents of the Harrington Road area in the town of Johnsburg turned out in numbers at the town board meeting Tuesday evening to convey their concern with the plan to repair the bridge on Harrington Road. The board eventually instructed highway superintendent Dan Hitchcock and volunteer engineer Jim Hutchins to move forward with existing plans, drafted in 2003 to repair the bridge. “We encouraged community members to attend the meeting because we want to hear their opinions on the situation and do our best to accommodate them,” Johnsburg Supervisor Sterling Goodspeed said. After heavy flooding in March, the bridge on Harrington Road was closed indefinitely pending more attention from road crews and

JOHNSBURG — Gore Mountain garnet mines are home to one of the world’s largest garnet deposits and the owners aren’t keeping it a secret. Opening for another season June 28, the owners of Barton Mines are inviting the public to come and tour their garnet mines as well as take part in a little treasure hunting. Tours are available seven

days a week through Labor Day and weekends only until Oct. 24. Reservation are required and interested parties should call 251-2553 for pricing and reservations. Barton Mines is the oldest family owned and operated mine in the United States, featuring the hardest garnet in the world that can only be found on Gore Mountain, making it extremely rare. The gems are hard to miss with an unusual ruby red color that flashes in the sun. In 1969, the governor of New York, Nelson Rockefeller, made the Barton garnet the New York State gem stone. The Barton family enjoys allowing visitors to take a piece of their family home with them. Without the use of tools, tour participants have the opportunity to search for garnet crystals of their own within an old mine site. “It’s a fun experience for all ages,” said Bonnie Barton. “The summer months are especially spectacular in our region with unobstruct-

denpubs@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK — The Baby’s Place Play Group 2009-2010 program is winding down for the summer. It seems everyone – parents, caregivers, toddlers and the play group staff and volunteers - was playing so well and having such a good time that the days sailed through fall, winter and spring. It’s nearly summer and we are all wondering where the time went. One feature of this playgroup is the participation of parents, grandparents and other caregivers playing right alongside the children. Adults who attend the group come not only to play, but also to connect with one another. Old friendships are renewed and sustained and new ones grow and develop. This year, the group had the pleasure of dads attending many of the sessions. Kids love it when dads come to play. Everyone seems to feel a special energy generated at those times. Dads add a special ingredient to the recipe for fun. The Baby’s Place Play Group recently hosted a “Coffee and Conversation” Event featuring local author, JoAnn Flammer from nearby Adirondack. Her talk focused on everyday ways parents can be their childrens’ first teachers and provide educational opportunities long before their children reach school age. Other “Coffee and Conversation” presenters have explored important topics including “Understanding Children’s Temperaments” and “Keeping Children Safe While Driving in the Car”. As this play group year comes to a close, Baby’s Place staff and volunteers want to wish all the best to those transitioning to pre-k in the fall. Some of these children have been

playgroup members since they were nursing infants in their mothers' arms. (The group welcomes children ages newborn through 3.) Yes, time flies when you’re having fun. The Play Group’s last session for this year was Tuesday, June 15 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the North Country Outreach Center. Later this summer watch for another article announcing the Baby’s Place first session in September of 2010. The Infant and Toddler Play Group is a program of North Country Ministry.

HOW TO REACH THE
T-DAP - Children 6 years of age and younger are routinely vaccinated against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis. But older children, adolescents, and adults need protection from these diseases too. Td (Tetanus, Diphtheria) and Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) vaccines provide that protection. TETANUS (Lockjaw) causes painful muscle spasms, usually all over the body. It can lead to tightening of the jaw muscles so the victim cannot open his mouth or swallow. Tetanus kills about 1 out of 5 people who are infected. DIPHTHERIA causes a thick covering in the back of the throat. It can lead to breathing problems, paralysis, heart failure, and even death. PERTUSSIS (Whooping Cough) causes severe coughing spells, vomiting, and disturbed sleep. • It can lead to weight loss, incontinence, rib fractures and passing out from violent coughing. Up to 2 in 100 adolescents and 5 in 100 adults with Pertussis are hospitalized or have complications, including pneumonia. These three diseases are all caused by bacteria. Diphtheria and Pertussis are spread from person to person. Tetanus enters the body through cuts, scratches, or wounds. It is recommended that adults receive at least one booster of T-Dap. Please call to discuss your eligibility for this immunization with a nurse. Shingles Vaccine – due to manufacturing problems, the shingles vaccine is not available. 57373

M
ay 2010 was not the warmest on record, but it did continue the string of above normal temperatures that began in Jan. and included two months - Mar. and Apr., which were the warmest on record. The above normal temperatures caused trees to leaf out and flower early, which led to brown leaves and damaged fruit as the temperatures plunged to 24 degrees on the May 11, with some areas reporting snow. The average high temperature was 71.8 and the average low temperature was 46.2 degrees, giving us an average of 59.0 degrees - 4.2 degrees above normal and the second warmest on record. The warmest May was in 1991 when the average was 59.5 degrees and the coldest May was in 1997 when the average was 49.6 degrees. The coldest temperature, of 24 degrees was recorded on May 11 and the warmest temperature of 93 degrees was recorded on May 27. This was the warmest day on record for May. The previous warmest day in May was 90 degrees, recorded three times in 1986, 1992 and 2007. There were 227.5 degree days, bringing the seasonal total to 7266.5. Rainfall was 3.09 inches - 0.71 inches below normal. Rain fell on 11 days with the greatest amount of 0.95 measured on the 8th. Most of the precipitation fell in the first half of the month leading to very dry conditions at the end of the month. There was some snow in the area on May 10 and 11, but not in Riparius. The river reached its highest level of 4.56 feet on May 10 and its lowest level of 2.67 feet on May 31. This low level shows how dry it became at the end of the month as the rapidly growing vegetation and the lack of significant rainfall produced very dry conditions.

Johnsburg Goes to War: 1861-1865 M
ost of the major Civil War battles were fought in the south, especially in Virginia. It would only be natural then to assume that of all states, Virginia men suffered the highest number of casualties. This is not true - actually more men from New York State (NYS) were killed in the war than from any other state. It is not that NYS men were particularly poor soldiers or ineptly led, although there certainly was some of that, but rather it had one of the highest state populations at that time. Fueled by the economic engine of such innovations as the Erie Canal and immigration from Europe, NYS at that time was a vibrant growing state with a robust economy. The sacrifices during the war by NYS communities and the loss of local boys, especially in the rural towns of upstate New York, were palpable. It is for these reasons, plus local pride and patriotism, that one can find monuments to Civil War soldiers in the town squares of most upstate communities. If you have any information, pictures or diaries of these men or their families, or of the Johnsburg Civil War soldiers I have listed in earlier columns, I would welcome hearing from you. I can be contacted at 2513009 or pearsall.glenn@gmail.com.
The following men are buried in St. James Cemetery in North Creek:
Johnson, Robert Birth date unknown, son of R. Johnson and E. Johnson. Listed as a Johnsburg resident in the 1860 Census, a farmer age 35, having apparently emigrated from Ireland. Units he served with unclear. Died Mar. 25, 1885.
Johnson, William J. Born 1843 in Ireland. Not listed in 1860 census as a Johnsburg resident, although there is a John, which was his father’s name listed as age 67. Served in Co. D of the 42nd NY. Died Nov. 28, 1899. Lapraree, Frank Born 1845, parent’s names unknown. Served with Co. F in the 169th NYVI. Died Sept. 3, 1885 and buried with his daughter, Margaret.
Civil War Monument in downtown Glens Falls, the only sandstone Civil War monument in New York State.
Waddell, William Tracey Born in 1830, son of Robert Jr. and Eleanor (Kelly). Listed as age 30 and a farm laborer in the 1860 census. Served with Co. I, 148th NYVI. Died Oct. 6 1892.
the 1860 census, son of John Jr. (age 42 in the 1860 census) and Merit (Ross). Served in Co. A, 93rd NYVI. Died July 7, 1865, just a week after the 93rd was mustered out of service, possibly from war injuries or disease.
Joining James Galusha, Leander William Graves (killed in the war) and Edmond West in the Wevertown Cemetery just north of Wevertown on NYS Rt 28 are:
Whipple, George Born 1840 and listed as age 19 at the time of the Johnsburg 1860 census, son of William and Mercy (Galusha). Served as a trooper in the 3rd Reg’t New York Cavalry. Died March 24, 1864 during the war. Body apparently returned home and buried in Wevertown Cemetery.

Need for live organ donors To the News Enterprise: A man who agreed to donate part of his liver to help a sick relative died while undergoing the transplant procedure at Lahey Clinic near Boston two weeks ago, according to a report in the Boston Globe. The generosity of live organ donors is spectacular. Imagine having a piece of your body cut out to save the life of a relative, a friend, or someone you don't even know! It's shameful that we need so many live organ donors in the United States. We wouldn't need so many of these incredibly brave people if Americans weren't burying or cremating 20,000 transplantable organs every year. In the United States, about half of the people who can donate their organs after death do donate them. The other half don't. What an awful waste. Every transplantable kidney or liver that is buried or cremated means another person dies or another live donor goes under the knife. Would people still refuse to donate their organs if affected their ability to receive an organ? Or would more people donate if it increased their chances of getting an organ if they needed one? These questions answer themselves. The United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), which manages the national transplant waiting list, moves live organ donors up the waiting list if they need a transplant later in life. This is a good thing to do. It's fair, and it increases the number of people who are willing to donate. UNOS should do the same thing for people who agree to donate their organs after death. It would make the organ allocation system fairer. Currently, about half of the organs transplanted in the United States are given to people who haven't agreed to donate their own organs when they die. More importantly, giving organs first to registered organ donors would increase the number of donated organs. It would save more lives, it would shorten transplant waiting times, and it would reduce the need for live organ donors. UNOS has the ability to make this common-sense change to its organ allocation rules. They should make this change immediately. If they made this change today, they'd save thousands of lives next year, the year after that, and every year after that one. Americans who want to donate their organs to other organ donors don't have to wait for UNOS to act. They can join LifeSharers. LifeSharers is a non-profit network of organ donors who agree to offer their organs first to other organ donors when they die. Membership is free at www.lifesharers.org or by calling 1-888-ORGAN88. There is no age limit, parents can enroll their minor children, and no one is excluded due to any pre-existing medical condition. LifeSharers has over 13,900 members, including members in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Dave Undis LifeSharers daveundis@lifesharers.org
To the News Enterprise: Abraham Lincoln said, “a house divided against itself cannot stand.” One hundred and fifty years later we are seeing his words come true. Our state and federal government are being torn apart by party conflicts. We are placing the blame on our president and governor, but let’s look at our legislative body. You’ll see that the sharp division between the political parties is where the problem lies. The elements of compromise and cooperation no longer exist. Our legislators are no longer a part of the solution. They are the problem. We were once a great nation that strived for the “good of the people.” If we intend to remain that great nation we must remove the “old blood” that has been tainted by a quest for power and replace it with individuals who care for the nation more than political power and self enrichment. This year we must tell the incumbents that we no longer care for the political in-fighting. We must elect “new blood” with new ideas. If you are an eligible voter and you have not registered, contact your local board of elections and register. Your vote can help implement a needed change. We have the ability to make a difference but we need to take the first step. Richard Stewart JCS Citizen’s Budget Committee
Addressed to Citizens Budget Committee To the News Enterprise: With due respect to First Amendment rights to free speech, I can personally find no credibility in the opinions of the anonymous “JCS Citizens Budget Committee.” Please have the courtesy and the courage to demonstrate your commitment to your ideals by revealing yourselves and signing your letters personally. Johnsburg From page 1 engineers, according to Hitchcock. Traffic has been rerouted around the failed bridge ever since. The Harrington Road bridge has washed out three times in recent years due in part to beaver dams on Austin Pond that often give way and send water downstream that is beyond the capacity of the existing bridge. A break in the largest of the dams contributed to March’s deluge. “This is the worst it’s ever been,” said resident Eileen Sharp. Hutchins suggested three options to the town board including replacing the bridge with a new bridge or culvert, making Harrington Road a dead-end and permanently rerouting traffic, or relocating Harrington Road to avoid the bridge altogether. “No matter what we do, we are never going to avoid the threat of flood elevation at that location,” he said. Aside from repairing the bridge, town board members also addressed how to handle the beavers and beaver dams on Austin Pond. The town board came to
Bridge From page 1 economy.” Douglas and Paterson were among a roster of federal, state and local officials at the groundbreaking ceremony, held June 8 at the base of the former bridge in Crown Point. Construction of a new $69.6 million bridge is to begin June 11. The Lake Champlain Bridge was closed last October because of safety concerns, and was demolished Dec. 28. A ferry service now links Crown Point and Addison, Vt. The new structure, which has soaring spans that reflect the trend-setting arches of the former bridge, is expected to be completed in September 2011. State Sen. Betty Little said the groundbreaking represented a turning point in area citizens’ lives. “Since the bridge’s closure, our local communities, families and businesses have been managing through a sort of triage to deal with the loss of this vital link,” she said. “Today marks the first step on the path to full recovery.”

a consensus that the beavers are the root of the problem and are responsible for the majority of the washouts. “There is nothing more difficult than dealing with beavers within the Adirondack Park,” said Goodspeed. The problematic beaver dam is built on the private property of Andrew Smith and attempts by the town board to contact him have been futile. The town of Johnsburg is unable to deal with the dam without permission from the private landowner. “The most recent flood came halfway up my driveway,” said Wayne Schoonmaker. “This is a dangerous situation and needs to be taken care of.” Many residents presented other safety concerns and made clear to the board that a rerouted or dead-end road was not in their best interests. “Without a bridge, it is very difficult to gain fire and ambulance access to many of the residences on Harrington Road,” Bill Nickerson said. In the coming days, Hitchcock and Hutchins will receive price quotes and appropriate permits to start breaking ground on repairing the existing bridge. Goodspeed, however, ensured residents that the town would not abandon attempts to contact Smith and resolve the problems caused by the beaver dams.
The Boss
State Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward and Vermont Rep. Diane Lanpher echoed those comments. Flatiron Constructors, Inc. of Boulder, Colorado was awarded the contract to build the new bridge. While Flatiron will bring a core team of about a dozen managers, there will be jobs for local workers, U.S. Rep. Bill Owens said. “This will help create jobs in communities that desperately need them,” Owens said. “I hope to see many people from my side of the lake, from my district, hired to work here.” Rep. Scott Murphy said the Crown Point Bridge is a critical entryway to the North Country, and the area economy depends upon it for economic development and survival. “Since the closure of the bridge, North Country communities have faced a tremendous challenge, and I applaud Gov. Paterson for providing this critical funding that will not only help our small businesses and farms, but will get our local economy back on track.” Town of Moriah Supervisor Tom Scozzafava said the bridge project is an example of how government can and should operate effectively.

From page 1 “We are very excited about our new partnership with Emerging Pictures,” said Patricia Connor, ILT director. “This only enhances what we are already presenting with feature films, live stage performances, community events and live concerts.” Following the Bruce Springsteen debut, Indian Lake Theater will continue to host noted musicians and performances through their Emerging Pictures opportunity. “The theater’s new relationship with Emerging Pictures will allow us to stream a dynamic series of live opera and ballet performances from the great performance halls of the world, and screen hard-to-get art, independent, and classic films with our crisp digital projector,” said Ben Strader, ILT board president. “As the theater continues to develop programming for everyone who calls our towns home, these new program options will allow us to be more flexible in an affordable manner. For those of you who like variety - Emerging Pictures will add more fun, more diversity, and bring more of the world onto our screen.” Admission to London Calling, Live in Hyde Park is $10. To make reservations or for further information regarding Indian Lake Theater and the Emerging Pictures program, call 648-5950 or e-mail at info@indianlaketheater.org.
From page 1 celebrating an anniversary of 75 years. “Our goal is to celebrate the antique lovers in our area as well as do our best to attract people to Long Lake,” said tourism director Alexandra Roalsvig. Thursday, July 8 from noon until 2 p.m., Ted Comstock, independent appraiser and consultant from Saranac Lake, will donate his services to provide verbal appraisals at the show. Comstock specializes in camp furnishings, old photographs, books, prints, paintings and sporting equipment. A former curator at the Adirondack Museum, he is widely versed in the region’s history as well as antiques of all kinds. The cost for each appraisal is $5 per item or three items for $12. One hundred percent of the appraisal proceeds will benefit the Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney Long Lake Library. On Saturday, July 10 Long Lake will be hosting its first Antique Wooden Boat Show at 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the Long Lake waterfront. Wooden boats including Chris-Craft, Gar Wood, Hacker Craft and original handcrafted Adirondack guideboats will be on site. A boat parade is slated for 4 p.m. and everyone is invited to a cocktail reception at the Adirondack Hotel at 5p .m. For more information on these events, contact the Long Lake tourism department at 624-3077.
Newcomb Class of 2010 Newcomb Central School Class of 2010
NEWCOMB — Newcomb Central School (NCS) superintendent Skip Hults has announced that Shelby Poulton will receive valedictorian honors at their 2010 graduation ceremonies on June 25. Poulton is the daughter of Craig and Kathy Poulton of Newcomb. While at NCS, she has been actively involved in National Honor Society, student council, Youth & Government, band, drama club, yearbook committee and prom committee. She has received honor roll and citizenship honor roll recognitions all four years of her high
school career. She was also chosen to serve on NCS’s parent, teacher, student organization, PTSO, was voted to class representative, and represented her school at Foundation for Excellent Schools (FES). Despite all her various activities, Poulton still maintains that her fondest memory of high school will probably always be the 2010 senior trip to Hawaii that the class took in April. Poulton will be enrolling at SUNY Canton undeclared in the fall with intentions to transfer for physical/occupational therapy.
