denpubs@denpubs.com MINERVA — The results of the second vote on the Minerva Central School District’s proposed 2013-14 spending plan are not only unofficial, they are questionable due to a problem with the manual lever voting machine that was used by the voters. The second vote on the Minerva Central School budget for the school year 2014-2015 took place on June 17. Unofficial vote totals, according to MCS Superintendent Tim Farrell, showed 173 no votes on the machine plus eight no votes via absentee ballot; and 226 yes votes on the machine plus 34 yes votes via absentee ballot. This totals 181 no votes and 260 yes votes, putting the yes votes just short of the 60 percent super majority needed for the budget to pass under the state’s tax levy cap rules. The machine used failed to record at least nine votes that were cast, placing in doubt the accuracy of the total count. Because of the issue with the machine, Farrell will be consulting with the school’s attorney and there will be a decision on whether to hold a third vote at a time to be determined.

Minerva concerned with an increase in vandalism cases By Mauranda Stahl-Sorensen mauranda@denpubs.com
MINERVA — With acts of vandalism on the rise, town officials are concerned with the state of the community. “We are frustrated and disappointed,” said Stephen McNally, Minerva Supervisor. “The Town Board and Supervisor have a zero tolerance policy and offenders who are caught will be punished as severely as possible under the law.” The strong message from the desk of the supervisor stems from weekend events resulting in damage to town and community property, particularly the Minerva Lake picnic area and the town Little League fields. “A bonfire was lit above the capacity of what the picnic area pits can handle,” said McNally. “When the State Trooper arrived on scene, he called the fire department and waited for their arrival.” The New York State Police have no confirmed arrests on record for the area. “A report was received at 44 Beach Road to Essex County 911,” said Jennifer Fleishman, New York State Troop B Public Information Officer. “The Trooper on scene contacted the volunteer fire department and the incident is still under investigation.”
Those with information
Individuals with information regarding any of the acts of vandalism in the area are encouraged to contact the New York State Police at 873-2750.
The past weekend’s acts of vandalism are not the first on record for Minerva. In May, the town board met and discussed, according to meeting minutes, attempts of arson and theft along with the launch of bottle rockets at the four corners in Olmsteadville. “All town employees, the supervisor and additional volunteers are working diligently to maintain and improve the town and our facilities,” said McNally. “It is apparent that some individuals are not making good decisions.” According to a statement on the Town of Minerva’s website, the issue has been addressed with some of the kids and their parents and “sharing that this behavior will not be tolerated.” The vandalism not only costs the town money for repairs but also scares residents. Minerva is a wonderful community and is no place for acts of vandalism.” McNally also stated that the state police are now aware of the situation and will be making frequent patrols of the area.

Minerva’s Bicentennial Committee starts planning efforts for 2017 By Keith Lobdell
keith@denpubs.com MINERVA — The Town of Minerva ‘s 200th birthday doesn’t arrive until March 17, 2017, but planning for this great event has begun. Comprised of representatives from numerous community organizations and businesses, the Minerva Bicentennial Committee has commenced a planning effort that is already producing plenty of great ideas for various activities and events. The Committee already has developed a mission: “To inspire
our community to shape our future by preserving our past.” The group is very excited about this mission and has formally met twice this spring, on May 30 and again on June 16 at the Minerva Town Hall. Committee officers have been named, and sub-committees have been identified. An attractive logo has been designed and timelines have been established. At the June 16 meeting, 14 people met to brainstorm fundraising ideas as well as develop ways to build awareness of the Town’s 200th birthday. The committee will have a definite pres-

Martha Gallagher to perform to benefit High Peaks Hospice NORTH CREEK — On June 27, the Tannery Pond Community Center theatre will be filled with songs, stories and in-the-moment inspirations celebrating the many wonderful facets of life. Musician and performer Martha Gallagher shares her unique mix of music and more in a one-woman show to benefit High Peaks Hospice and Palliative Care (HPHPC). “High Peaks Hospice came into my home and my family’s life over 20 years ago. Instead of it being a tragic and difficult experience of a family member dying in our home, it was an amazing life experience for all of us,” says Gallagher. With the desire to give back to HPHPC
and the Adirondack communities that she considers her home, Gallagher approached HPHPC with the idea of creating a partnership. As a major part of the year-long partnership, Gallagher acts as an ambassador for HPHPC, entertaining her audiences as well as helping to raise awareness about the organization and its mission, services, staff and volunteers. The partnership coincides with Gallagher’s performance plans for 2014. Well known in the region as The Adirondack Harper, Gallagher performs on tours throughout the US and in Canada. She has designated 2014 as a year of Celebrating Home in the Adirondacks, with performances at a variety of venues and events
throughout the region, throughout the year. Gallagher offers multi-faceted performances as a harper, singer, songwriter, storyteller, humorist and actress. She has gained international renown for her unique approach to playing the harp as well as how she incorporates the instrument into her music and live performances. For the June 27 performance Gallagher is crafting a very special, one-night-only event, full of a variety of music; from blues to jazz, from Celtic to Latin grooves, from serious to humorous. Gallagher’s original music and stories are inspired by the people, places and events of daily life; from the mundane to the grand. She often draws on inspirations that strike her while
on stage, improvising music or story. “I’m delighted to be able to give this concert, knowing that the people attending will have a terrific evening and the proceeds will benefit a wonderful organization that truly helps so many people and their families throughout the region,” says Gallagher. The June 27 show starts at 7 p.m. at Tannery Pond, located at 228 Main St., North Creek. Reservations are recommended; tickets are $15 and will be available at the door. To purchase tickets, please call the 743-1672. A reception will follow the concert, hosted by HPHPC. Information on HPHPC can be found at highpeakshospice.org. INDIAN LAKE — Service and commitment-to-cause were identified at the Adirondack Area School Board Recognition Dinner at the Queensbury hotel in May. With their community service contributions, 24 students were recognized. Indian Lake’s Shannon Farrell was one of the students accepting an award and speaking at the engagement. “It meant a lot (being recognized) coming from such a small town,” said Farrell. “I have been recognized in my community but never thought I would be recognized in that way, it was great.” Farrell has served her community in many capacities including coordination with hospice care and mental health services. “My grandmother was sick with leukemia and receiving hospice services,” said Farrell. “I spent most nights up there taking care of her.” In and around the community, Farrell also has volunteered at the Red Cross Blood Drive, Breast Cancer Awareness Dance, Muscular Dystrophy Shamrock Dance, Santa’s Helper for the Indian Lake Volunteer Dept. Auxiliary, Litter Clean-Up, Town Wide Clean Up Days, “Hike for Cody”- suicide awareness walk up Prospect Mountain and the Winterfest Snocade. During her high school years, Farrell participated in a number of activities in the district including varsity soccer, basketball and softball. She also spent much time preforming service with
the “Big Buddy Program” an initiative that brings youth together in a mentoring fashion. Farrell is the class valedictorian this graduating year and plans to continue her commitment to service with enrollment in the Nursing Program at Russell Sage College. In closing she offered words for the next years seniors. “The community always needs you, there is always something you can be doing for somebody.”

Communication is the key
he San Antonio Spurs just showed every basketball fan in America that when a team comes together, they can do something spe-
cial. The Spurs did not have the marquee name player (that honor went to the Miami Heat and LeBron James, arguably the greatest player of this generation) or an inflated payroll. They had a mixture of players from different backgrounds who came together to make each other better. On the court, the team worked together. The only way this could have been accomplished is through practice, patience and communication. On a playing field or court, communication can come in verbal forms, such as calling a play or helping teammates to know their responsibilities, or in physical forms like raising an eyebrow to tell a teammate to cut to the basket or pointing to where the pass will be delivered. No matter what, communication is vital to a successful team. In the North Country, some teams and schools are facing the stress of declining enrollments equaling a lack in the number of youth needed to play middle and high school sports, especially among the schools in Section VII/Class D, which holds the lowest enrollment numbers in the region. Several schools have already consolidated athletic programs, creating the Minerva/Newcomb Mountaineers and Indian Lake/Long Lake Orange. Others have combined for individual sports, best exemplified by the Emus track and field team, a combination of Elizabethtown-Lewis, Keene, Moriah and Westport. Of late, we have reported that ELCS and Westport have started to talk about more merged sports programs. This spring, the two schools combined their modified (typically students in grades 7-9) baseball and softball programs, with one team playing games in Elizabethtown and the other in Westport. Now, the schools are looking to do the same with the modified girls and varsity boys (typically grades 10-12) soccer programs. Willsboro has just completed its fourth season of not fielding a varsity baseball team. Furthermore it was not even able to field a modified or junior varsity program (which can take students from all eligible grades depending on a physical for younger athletes), signifying what may be the unfortunate end to an entire spring sports program where a once proud ball tradition stood. This also would not be Westport’s first time down the merged team road for a sport other than track, as they combined with Keene for the two-year boys spring sports era known as “Beagle-ball.” For these schools or any others looking at the need to merge sports or, let’s be honest, even academic reasons, communication is going to be the key. In Schroon Lake, Athletic Director Lee Silvernail
June 21, 2014
invited the community to a public forum on the future of Wildcat athletics which took place June 17. Schroon Lake has already been affected. This spring, the school was without a modified baseball program, which meant students in seventh grade who are barred from advancing to the varsity level by the state had no chance to play organized baseball — too young for varsity and too old for little league. Silvernail is giving the community the chance to shape the future of how they want their sports programs to be handled, whether it be through combined gender teams, merged teams, or only fielding a varsity or modified squad, depending on numbers. We commend Silvernail and Schroon Lake for taking this initiative. This is the way we hope all school districts approaching this topic would communicate with their parents and students as they head down a very sensitive road, no matter what the outcome of the public hearing and any further planning. If you are a school district or districts looking to merge teams and you are not having similar forums and hearings, we would strongly suggest you do so. For many of our small town communities, high school sports is something to rally behind. It designates us as Eagles, or Lions, or Eagles, or Blue Bombers, or Eagles, or Warriors, or Eagles (yes, we have noticed there’s four teams locally with the same nickname). All over the area, signs have popped up at the edge of town indicating their school team won the Section VII title or made it to a state championship game. People hold on to these memories made through sports and may see the combining of two teams as cheapening those sacred reflections. They may also feel bringing two schools together will lessen their child’s chance of participating in high school sports since it has been ages since anyone in a Class D school has heard the word “cut,” without looking at the possibility that a merge could actually lead to an increased opportunity through the addition of a junior varsity program, giving an option of three viable teams instead of two which are somewhere between fledgling and nonexistent. This is a situation where no matter what a school or schools decide to do, someone is going to be upset that their school nickname is going away or that their kid can’t play school sports because there was not enough interest to field a team and no one wanted to merge. In the world of high school sports, this may very well be a no-win situation. But, one thing can lessen the impact of any and all decisions made and bring communities closer together as they face these new North Country realities, and that is communication. Ñ

A response To the News Enterprise: I’m not sure to which Letter you refer, Mr Dingman. I sent an email to Dan Alexander giving my thoughts on a mandated minimum wage, but I was not aware that it was published. I am not defending free-market capitalism in any way. All of the evils that you mention are effects of a heartless, vicious economic system that feeds upon itself and clearly needs to be regulated. Personally, I think the U.S. capitalism system stinks and one of the most important issues of our lifetimes is to devise a system to take its place. However, I stand by my contention that it is not the job of American business to provide living-wage jobs (or any other non-work related benefits) for employees. A person goes into business to earn money so that he can support himself and his family. I challenge you to walk down Main Street, talk to the owner(s) of every business in your town of North Creek and ask if their goal is to earn a living for themselves, or to provide a living-wage for their employees. My criticism is that Government treats small businesses as an unlimited source of money there for the plucking. I would much prefer to see minimum wage incomes raised to a liveable wage by direct Government subsidies -- not by mandate -- and thus not burden businesses. The same goes for health insurance: Businesses should not be burdened with mandated health insur-
ance costs that rightfully should be paid by Government. David Safrany Half Moon Bay, Calif
Upset with edits To the News Enterprise: The Catwalk in the Creek committee submitted a lovely press release announcing our event and a version of this release appeared in the June 14 paper, but it was hacked together and lacked the panache that the original article does. The event is called Catwalk in the Creek, not Carhartts to Couture which is the subtitle, and furthermore, Carhartts is misspelled in the article with only one ‘t’. A point of the original article that we need to rectify is recognizing the businesses and volunteers that help make this event possible, those being: Creative Stage Lighting for the runway lights, Brian Conway for the music, and Noah Howard for designing the remarkable posters, and all the event volunteers, and restaurants that donate food and beverages. This event is raising money for our local Johnsburg EMS, so come out for the Fashion Emergency on June 20 at 6pm at Riverside Park. Tickets are $15. e Americans greet each other with a smile and a “Hi.” Some follow this up with “How are you?” or “How ya doing?” We don’t really expect to get a definitive answer, certainly not a laundry list of ailments, doctor visits and medications. The response is “fine” or “good” even if it isn’t quite true. Similarly, when we take leave, we say “Have a good (great) day” What makes a day good or great? Our answers will vary, but it can be a valuable exercise to determine the components of such a day. I’ve heard it said that any day you wake up on the right side of the grass is a good one. If we can get out of bed on our own, see, hear, walk, talk and take sustenance we’re off to a good start. We tend to take all of this for granted because we expect to be able to function. I begin my morning by working the puzzles in the Post Star: the Crossword, Jumble, Cryptoquote and Sudoku. On a good day I can do three out of four. It is a great day when I finish them all. In the weather department a great day is one with blue skies and sunshine, mild temperatures, a light wind and the absence of biting insects. A good day is a busy one in which I complete some chore on my To Do List and feel a sense of accomplishment. Mowing the lawn or weeding a flower bed qualifies. I love to see flowers reappear in the garden each spring and the Great Blue Heron on his rock perch in Mill Creek. On a good day I spend some time in the company of friends or talk with them on the telephone. A great day is one when I’m with family or Skyping on the computer. I hope you all have a good day!

BioBlitz buzz in Newcomb as annual event planned for June 29 By Mauranda Stahl-Sorensen mauranda@denpubs.com
NEWCOMB — Identification, tagging, trapping and documentation are all on the agenda for the 2014 BioBlitz in Newcomb June 29. “As a cofounding partner of ATBI, SUNY ESF’s Newcomb Campus is pleased to host this year’s BioBlitz,” said Stacy McNulty, Associate Director of the Adirondack Ecological Center. “It’s a thrill to watch young people mixing with expert naturalists - such an excitement is in the air.” The Adirondack All-Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI) is a collaborative group of professional and citizen-scientists and has hosted the BioBlitz for seven years in the Adirondack Park.
