By Mike Corey
denpubs@denpubs.com MINERVA Ñ On June 17, the Minerva Central School budget again apparently failed to result in the 60 percent Ò yesÓ vote result needed to pass it; instead, it received a total of 59 percent yes votes. On May 20, the first budget had gone down, with 56 percent of district voters giving it a thumbs-up. Following the June 17 vote, it was determined that the voting machine used by Minerva Central School may not have recorded votes properly, prompting the school to impound the machine. The results of the second budget vote were declared to be unofficial. The Board of Education (BOE) determined that it would hold a special meeting the evening of June 19 to discuss the results of this latest vote. A crowd of 37 interested citizens attended the boardÕ s special meeting, held in the schoolÕ s cafeteria. Superintendent Tim Farrell began the meeting with a summary of the voting numbers from the second vote, speaking about the issue concerning the machine, and then discussing the schoolÕ s option to file an appeal of the budget vote results to the New York State Commissioner of Education. Minerva Central School has decided to appeal the results of the vote because of the discrepancy between the total number of voters who used the machine on June 17 versus the number of votes recorded on the machine. The difference was nine, which calls into question the voteÕ s overall results. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

ELIZABETHTOWN Ñ Elise Stefanik has handily defeated Matt Doheny in securing the Republican nomination to replace outgoing Congressman Bill Owens (D-Plattsburgh) in the race for New YorkÕ s 21st Congressional District. If elected in November, she will be the youngest woman in history to be elected to the U.S. Congress. She is 29 years old. Once returns started coming in shortly after polls
closed Tuesday night at 9 p.m. Ñ data from polling places was zipped off to each county, verified by officials and uploaded onto their respective websites — Doheny, an investment banker from Watertown, never regained his footing. Stefanik took an early lead over Doheny as returns from Fulton County started coming in at roughly a 2-to1 clip. St. Lawrence, Lewis, Essex, Clinton, Hamilton, Warren Ñ even Jefferson, DohenyÕ s home county Ñ all went to Stefanik.
By 10:30 p.m, with 47 percent of precincts reporting, Stefanik led Doheny 60 to 40 percent, topping her opponent in each of the 12 counties constituting the district. Doheny called Stefanik to concede at 10:33 p.m as AP results showed Stefanik with 11,019, or 60 percent, to DohenyÕ s 7,339. Locally Stefanik bested Doheny 1,428 to 676 in Clinton County; 1,144 to 502 in Essex County; 794 to 311 in Franklin County; 309 to 239 in Hamilton County; 1,872 to 933 in Warren County and 1,745 to 1,056 in Saratoga County. Minerva/Newcomb’s Bennett swipes her way to record books By Curtis Seaman
denpubs@denpubs.com MINERVA Ñ A record that was broken just last year by former MVAC softball player Kylee Cassavaugh of Elizabethtown-Lewis was broken once again this season by an MVAC softball player. Cassavaugh had the New York State steals record with 146, but Dakota Bennett, a senior shortstop and leadoff hitter for the MinervaNewcomb Mountaineers, captured the record on April 25 against the North Warren Cougars when she recorded four steals, finishing with a career total to 171. BennettÕ s batting average this season was
.400 with an on base percentage of .750. In her freshman year Dakota recorded 38 steals, 42 her sophomore year and 45 as a junior. The Mountaineers won their last regular season game 19-1 over the Johnsburg Jaguars, and Bennett recorded three steals. MinervaNewcomb finished the season with a 13-2 record with their only losses coming to Section VII champs Crown Point Panthers and finalist Schroon Lake Wildcats. Ò I just canÕ t believe it,Ó Bennett said. Ò IÕ m still thinking that I have to steal a certain number of bases a game. But now that I have the record IÕ m really happy and proud of myself.Ó Bennett will bring her lightening quick speed to SUNY Cortland next fall and looks to continue to break records throughout her career.

The Board decided to take the path of offering a reduced pre-K through 12 program rather than a plan that would tuition out secondary students to neighboring schools. Farrell indicated that costs to the school of either option would be similar. Before concluding the meeting, the board decided that it would hold meetings on June 26 at 5 p.m. and then on June 30 at 6 p.m. to discuss how cuts would be made to pare $446,000 from the 2014-2015 budget. Members of the board indicated that there will be very difficult decisions to be made regarding these cuts.

Ò This brings together science and math teachers and keeps them current with research going on in their field”, said Fink, one of the few teachers selected in Essex County (North Country region). She will work through SUNY Plattsburgh in the endeavor to help design, lead, and participate in further enriching professional development. Ò She will be an important part of an effort to train other teachers in STEM,Ó according to Superintendent Tim Farrell. Ò We are incredibly proud of Sarah Fink and her selection as a Master Teacher. She took the initiative to research and complete a very rigorous application process, working with her colleagues at MCS.Ó To assist her with working with other Master Teacher Program recipients on content-oriented professional development, Fink will receive a stipend for each of the next four years. Fink has been a very hard working teacher at Minerva Central School over the years, according to Superintendent Farrell. “She is an outstanding teacher – her selection is an exiting accomplishment for the school and its faculty.Ó

As a Master Teacher, she will further this process, working with other teachers across a wide region of NYS to spread her knowledge of teaching in order to help students be successful. On April 14 of this year, Fink was named one of only 215 educators across New York State as a Master Teacher, a select group of teacher experts who are dedicated to providing a great learning experience for students throughout the state. According to a Governor’s Office press release, these teachers greatly contribute, Ò to our efforts to attract and retain the best and the brightest in our STEM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Math) classrooms.Ó The Master Teacher Program runs in partnership with State University of New York schools across the state.

Council change up in Minerva town board as Lee resigns amidst school budget issues By Mauranda Stahl-Sorensen mauranda@denpubs.com
MINERVA Ñ At the June 19 town board meeting a correspondence was received by the board from councilman Robert Lee. The letter, read by Supervisor Steve McNally, was a request for the board to accept LeeÕ s resignation as councilman effective immediately. Ò I came in to this (seeking a seat on the council) for two reasons,” said Lee. “Economic development being the first. Kids go to school here they grow up here and they leave and they never come back. There are no jobs. The second was to maintain a strong school.Ó Unfortunately, the school faces an uncertain future, prompting Lee to resign from his seat on the town board. On June 17, the second of two attempts to pass the budget that requires a super majority of 60 percent failed. The vote failed by one percentage point with a total including absentee ballots of 260 yes and 181 no votes. Ò I was appalled that 181 people voted down the budget,Ó said Lee. Ò It is like this unholy alliance and people are putting personal matters ahead of the kids. I donÕ t care what
reasons people have (to vote no) I just care about these students.Ó Lee, a former educator, ran for the position of town councilman in the November election cycle. At the time, two seats on the board were up for grabs. Lee garnered 151 votes putting him in the third slot. In the same election McNally bested Sue Montgomery-Corey for the supervisor position and as a result vacated his seat on the board. Lee, an independent, was appointed to that seat. Ò We retired here and my wife has been a long-time resident with her family coming from Ireland during the famine,Ó said Lee. Ò School taxes are a part of living here and I just canÕ t believe people wouldnÕ t support the school.Ó Lee also stated that from a standpoint of economic development the recent turn of events was going to be a hindrance to new business. Ò What company would want to move here without a school?Ó asked Lee. Ò The school is our biggest employer, and I donÕ t just mean the teachers. ItÕ s about the lunch room workers the teacherÕ s aides the maintenance and janitorial staff, they wonÕ t have jobs either.Ó Minerva, a town that relies heavily on tourism and summer
residents, has a great number of voters that live out of town during the winter months, but are back during the summer. “If you want all the benefits of living here you have to pay the taxes, and those taxes are relatively low,Ó said Lee. Ò If you donÕ t want to pay them get out of your raggedy trailer and go back to were you came from.Ó The Minerva School has its attorneyÕ s working on a request to hold a third vote due to the claim of a voting machine malfunction on June 17; however, Lee was not waiting around for final word on that matter. Ò I became a member of his board to serve the people,Ó said Lee. Ò I can not in good conscience serve the 181 people that voted no.Ó With LeeÕ s seat now vacant, during the June 19 board meeting McNally weighed in. Ò We could appoint someone to the seat,Ó said McNally. Ò But I feel that gives them an advantage in the fall election.Ó In the November election there was a fourth contender for the board seat, Peter McNally who earned 61 votes. Ò I will get the legality of appointment and how to move forward and I will have it for our July 3 meeting,Ó said McNally.

WiFi in the Adirondacks?
C
anada recently decided to install WiFi at 20 locations in its national parks system, according to Time Magazine. If the experiment is successful, a total of 75 hotspots might be installed over the next few years. The decision has turned out to be somewhat controversial and it would be shortsighted to think a similar debate will not emerge in the Adirondacks. Ò What weÕ re trying to do is have it around the spots where people can write a digital postcard home, where they could in the morning pick up and take their digital subscription and read the newspaper when theyÕ re around the campground,Ó Director of Visitor Experience with Parks Canada Andrew Campbell told CTV News, adding that internet would only be made available at visitor centers and campgrounds. Ò Those sorts of things are what people have been asking us for, and so weÕ re trying to provide that to our visitors.Ó But many see the installation of Wi-Fi as a threat to an authentic wilderness experience. “No sooner have you seen your first Canadian black bear or mountain peaks reflected in the perfect stillness of Lake Louise, then someoneÕ s phone will go off,Ó Sophie Campbell told the Telegraph in a representative comment. Ò Or maybe Wi-Fi will only be accessible in the campsites, where happy childrenÕ s faces will be lit not by the glow of a campfire but by the glow of Grand Theft Auto 5. HereÕ s to modern wilderness: tweet, tweet!Ó Speaking to CBC, Farley Mowat, a Canadian author and environmentalist, was perhaps more hyperbolic. Ò My thoughts can be expressed quite simply. I think it is a disastrous, quite stupid, idiotic concept, and should be eliminated immediately,Ó Mowat said. Ò I have very strong feelings that national parks, provincial parks, any kind of parks, that are theoretically set up to provide for the protection of nature, in some form or another, should be respected absolutely and ultimately and human beings should be kept out of them as much as possible.Ó At the risk of coming across as the callous Once-ler who chopped down the Truffula trees in Dr. SeussÕ 1971 ecological parable The Lorax, we believe these concerns, while well inten-

tioned, are misplaced. First, to address Sophie CampbellÕ s chief point, we think that how outdoor enthusiasts employ Wi-Fi in the outdoors is really of no concern to us, so long as they donÕ t disturb wildlife, the ecosystem, or other human visitors. Second, to address MowatÕ s overarching point, we believe that, while it might happen less than we might like in practice, outdoor enthusiasts can exist in nature without disturbing wildlife and the ecosystem. We also believe that if done with great care, the equipment needed to support hotspots could be installed without harming or intruding on these either. Kathy Daley, a camping enthusiast from Winnipeg, who spoke to CBC, offered what we see as the most sensible position. Ò I think the idea of Wi-Fi in the national parks is great,Ó Daley said. Ò I think if itÕ s available to people who want it fantastic and if you donÕ t want to partake just donÕ t bring your phone.Ó We believe Wi-Fi access in Canadian national parks and eventually remote sections of the Adirondack wilderness would have practical benefits for outdoor enthusiasts, not the least of which being safety advantages. Imagine, say, a hiker was injured on the trail in an area where there was no cell-phone coverage. With Wi-Fi, help from a forest ranger could be acquired with a quick email to the proper authorities. In fact, we would support a plan for Wi-Fi in the Adirondack Park that goes further than that currently slated in CanadaÕ s national parks. The arguments in favor of internet access at visitor centers and campgrounds, especially the safety arguments, apply to more remote sections of the wilderness as well, if not more so. We believe that itÕ s only a matter of time before wireless-internet access is made available everywhere in the world, including the Adirondack Park. Opposing this inevitability is, like it or not, similar to opposing an incoming tide. And as far as weÕ re concerned, so long as the installation and use of Wi-Fi does not disturb wildlife, the ecosystem, and other outdoor enthusiasts Ñ which we believe is theoretically possible Ñ itÕ s something to be welcomed. In camp and on the river E
very now and then, in the Adirondacks the stars, and the moon and the sky line up in just the perfect manner to provide a perfect end to a perfect day. As woodland wanderers trudge back to camp tired and sore from the dayÕ s adventures, The sky is cobalt blue, with puffy clouds puffy chasing across the far horizon and streaks of magenta sunset staining the late day horizon. In camp, a fire snaps and crackles under a fresh load of cedar twigs, accompanied by the roar of dry birch logs. The weather is fair, and a sweet, warm breeze riffles across the waters to chase away the late day punkies. Lighting bugs begin to glow in the nearby field, as the low who-who of an owl’s note whispers from the woods. Soon, a million stars appear to light up the evening sky and the full moon shines overhead. Crickets begin to chirp, while far off in the distance, a loon lets loose with a mournful tune. It echoes across rippling waters where dappled stars dance on the surface, and is chased back by the surrounding hills. Such is camp life, where the sweetest sound is the giggling of kids nestled in their sleeping bags, attempting to drown out the roar of their fatherÕ s incessant snore. A child who has never experienced such joys, is surely missing out on one of the true joys of childhood; and any parent who fails to provide such experiences is missing out on some of the finest memories a family will ever share. Camping is an activity that fosters cooperation and compassion. It can make men out of boys, and boys out of men, or women. Fortunately, family camping has become much easier in recent years. There are numerous how-to manuals, and even self-erecting tents. Flame-free LED lights have replaced the glow of white gas lanterns, and foam pads are now incorporated right into the sleeping bag. ThereÕ s no need to blow up a leaky old, air mattress. A night under the stars can be as comfortable as sleeping under the roof of your own house, although the air conditioning is likely to be sweeter and the atmosphere more entertaining. For those who may prefer to rough it a bit easier, this may be the perfect weekend to camp a little closer to home, as the National Wildlife Federation is again hosting their Annual Great American Backyard Campout on Saturday, June 28, 2014! The annual event finds thousands of people across the nation gathering in their backyards, neighborhoods, communities and parks to take part in a fun-filled evening for all generations to get outside and connect with nature. Great American Backyard Campout¨ is a part of National Wildlife FederationÕ s efforts to help inspire Americans to protect wildlife, including a three-year campaign to get 10 million kids to spend regular outdoor time in nature. Since 2005, thousands of people from across the nation have come together the fourth Saturday of June to participate in the Great American Backyard Campout in support of Great Outdoors Month. The annual nationwide event is designed to promote the benefits of camping as a way to connect people with nature and support NWFÕ s efforts to get kids outdoors.
This year, NWF has set a goal of getting more than 200,000 people across the country to camp out for the 10th anniversary of the Great American Backyard Campout. For further information, please visit http://www.nwf.org/Great-American-BackyardCampout/Event-Details.aspx on line
Spare the rod, and you’ll spoil the child
The coming weekend has the potential to provide an additional bonus for campers, as June 28-29, 2014, also happens to be the annual Free Fishing Weekend in New York State. All across the state there will be Free Sport Fishing Events with family fishing clinics hosted. And anglers can fish for free; as no freshwater fishing license is required during the event, which is hosted annually on the last weekend in June. In addition to fishing, participants can learn about fish identification, fishing equipment and techniques, fisheries management, angling ethics and aquatic ecology. Angling, similar to camping, is a life skill that every local child should learn at a young age. IÕ d far prefer to have my children lost somewhere on a stream, than wandering around in the mall. Although a river may transport kids far from home for a spell, it will similarly always bring them back. I discovered this truth of this statement, while fishing with my niece and nephew last weekend. Joe Hackett is a guide and sportsman residing in Ray Brook. Contact him at brookside18@adelphia.net.
