Wanda Shapiro returns home with new novel Fishing derby attracts more than 170 young anglers

Two local readings planned by JCS graduate

INDIAN LAKE — The weather gods were shining once again on Adirondack Lake in the Town of Indian Lake during the Indian Lake / Blue Mt. Fish and Game Association’s annual Kids Fishing Derby held July 3. A glorious day, hardly a breeze, as 170 children vied to catch the largest fish that they could coax out of the water. By the end of the day 446 sunfish, perch, pike, and bass had been landed, weighed, tabulated, and returned to the lake. Jaine Smith, 8 years, of Kattskill Bay, NY earned the honor of catching the largest fish of the day, a 2 pound 1 ounce large mouth bass. In addition to a first place certificate, Jaine was awarded a $30 first prize check and a trophy for the largest fish of the day. The trophy was dedicated in memory of George Nemec of Warrensburg in recognition for all of the support that he had provided to the Kids Fishing Derby in recent years.

NORTH CREEK — Wanda Shapiro has gone indie with her original work — not in the music industry, but as a writer. The Johnsburg Central School graduate will soon return to her roots and present two readings in North Creek. The Los Angeles writer will read Wanda Shapiro excerpts from her independently-published debut novel “Sometimes that Happens with Chicken.” Readings will be at the Town of Johnsburg Library 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, and at Common Roots 6 p.m. Friday, July 23. In addition to these two events in her hometown, Shapiro is finalizing an event in New York City and has also announced an event in Woodstock. Many reviews have referred to Shaprio as a one-woman Random House because her indie business model is getting nearly as much attention as her novel itself. When she finished writing Sometimes that Happens wwith Chicken, Shapiro came to the conclusion she didn’t need the publishing industry to sell books. “All I need are readers, and readers are rallying around the novel as well as my indie

Sue Murante, a certified WaterArt instructor, leads the group twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-11 a.m. Murante became interested in the activity in Florida as a form of low-impact exercise and now does some sort of water aerobics three times a week. She has been an instructor for three years. “It helped me tremendously and I thought if it works for me, it should work for other people as well,” said Murante. She affirms water aerobics improves balance, burns calories, decreases pain and stiffness, improves coordination, strengthened muscles, relieves stress, and improves cardiovascular endurance and range of motion. “Simply moving in the

Karin Peet HIGHER DEDUCTIBLES MAKE $ENSE Most financial experts recommend assuming higher deductibles on your home, auto, and business insurance. Why? Because it really doesn’t make financial sense to buy insurance for small losses that you can handle out of pocket with little or no financial difficulty. ********* Choosing higher deductibles lowers your rates. Higher deductibles result in premium savings you can pocket or use to upgrade your coverage to be better protected against larger losses, with little or no increased premium. ********* Insurance is best purchased to provide financial protection against large property or liability losses that if not fully covered by insurance would likely result in financial hardship. NORTH CREEK — On Aug. 9-13, 6-8:30 p.m., the North Creek United Methodist Church and St. James Catholic Church will join forces at “Hero Headquarters”. At Hero HQ kids will learn about unnamed heroes who were not super or powerful, yet their small acts were used by God to do wonderful things! What they had was a willingness to be used by God right where they lived. A staff of 20 volunteers from the two churches is preparing for a fun filled week of learning with Bible stories dramatized by the “Teen Team”, music, crafts, games and healthy snacks. A special closing program at the Ski Bowl will include a picnic for kids and their families, where groups will share how they have been heroes at home, in the community, and with the environment. All children from kindergarten age to teens are invited to experience Hero HQ, and there is no fee to participate. Please register by Aug. 5 by calling Jan Nickerson at 2510164.

Minerva Day brought luck to fishing derby participants hooked. Following the recording of these weights, the fish were released back into the waters of the lake, only to occasionally be caught again. Winners in three age levels won fine fishing tackle, including fishing poles. The derby, sponsored by the Minerva Parks and Recreation Committee, was a success and, although not everyone who wet their worms caught a fish, they all had a great time.

Competition was indeed fierce among these anglers, in a friendly sort of way. The monster fish, a half-pound pumpkinseed of exceeding beauty, caught by Ruzbacki was admired and gently returned to the waters. Several individuals and organizations deserve thanks for helping the fishing derby to be as successful as it was. Thanks to the Minerva Service Organization for donating the funds needed to supply the fishing tackle and poles and to John and Wanda Callihan for donating the substantial prize for the day’s monster fish. Tackle and poles were purchased at Murdie’s General Store in Minerva. Thanks also to Minerva Central School for letting one of its balances be used to weigh the fish caught in this contest. Anglers as well as finny friends were out in force that Saturday morning. The fish taken from Minerva Lake that day came in all sizes (but mostly small) and a few shapes, consistent with pumpkinseed sunfish and yellow perch. The day was warm and friendly, and so were the young anglers who participated. Kids from age four to 15 came out to try their luck in the clean waters of Minerva Lake. To the News Enterprise: The family of Frederick “Stan” Granger (Jan. 14, 1938 June 10, 2010) would like to thank all the friends and family who came out to pay their last respects to one of the greatest men one could have ever known. We would like to thank all those who donated food, time, love and support. It was nice to read in every card how many people loved his smile. The volume of people who showed up to his calling hours and funeral spoke for itself that he was a man that touched many lives. We would also like to send a special thank you to, Dr. James Hicks and the staff at the North Creek Health Center who were so kind to him during his illness. Another special thanks to Cathy McGowin. I thought of you with love today but that is nothing new I thought about you yesterday and days before that too, I think of you in silence I often speak your name All I have are memories and your picture in a frame Your memory is my keepsake with which I’ll never part God has you in His keeping I have you in my heart. Johnsburg Goes to War: 1861-1865 I just returned from a few weeks vacation, which included re-visiting several Civil War battlefields to try to determine exactly where on that battlefield men from Johnsburg fought — and died. These battlefields included Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Manassas, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Chancellorsville, Cold Harbor, Drury’s Bluff and Fort Harrison. Accompanying me was my dog “Tait” who I think now has explored more Civil War battlefields than any other dog in the north country! I look forward to sharing with you the information and pictures I took in these explorations at my Tannery Pond presentation “Johnsburg Goes to War” in September of 2011. The following men are not listed in the 1860 Johnsburg census. I presume they moved to Johnsburg after the war. Each is buried in Union Cemetery in North Creek. Next week: 5 members of the Waldron family go to war, which will complete my list of Civil War veterans buried at Union Cemetery. If you have any additional information on these men, or the men listed in earlier columns, I would appreciate hearing from you. I can be contacted at 251-3009 or by e-mail at pearsall.glenn@gmail.com. Glenn L. Pearsall

une 2010 continued the string of above normal temperatures that began in January, but only by a small margin. The biggest story of the month was the above average amount of precipitation which helped to end the mini-drought that developed in the last weeks of May. The average high temperature was 75.6 degrees and the average low was 54.8 degrees, giving us an average of 65.2 degrees — only 0.3 degree above normal. The highest temperature of 86 degrees was recorded on the 19th and the lowest temperature of 41 degrees was recorded on the 9th. This low temperature worried some area gardeners as frost was predicted for some locations. There were no 90 degree days compared to an average of 2.

Rainfall for the month was 5.94 inches — 1.75 inches above normal and the fifth wettest on record. The wettest June was in 2006 when 9.30 inches was recorded and the driest June was in 1988 when only 1.00 inch fell. Our seasonal total is now 22.25 inches — 1.88 inches above normal. Rain fell on 19 days with the greatest amount of 1.40 inches recorded on the 27th. The heating season officially ended at the end of the month although most homeowners stop heating their homes in May. This year the heating season was easier on the heating bills as only 7337.5 degree days were recorded — 552.5 degree days less than normal and the fifth lowest on record. In the winter of 1994, which is the coldest on record, there were 8684 degree days. The winter of 2005 was the warmest on record with only 7185 degree days. Last winter was considerably colder than this past winter, as 8073.5 degree days were recorded. The river reached its highest level of 5.89 feet on the 29th after the large rainfall and its lowest level of 2.62 feet on the 1st, after the dry spell at the end of May.

Upcoming productions not to miss To the News Enterprise: Last Sunday, Ed and I had a great afternoon of theater at Tannery Pond Community Center seeing a wonderful production of Godspell presented by the Adirondacks Lakes Center for the Arts. Out of a cast of 17 actors, eight were from various parts of the Adirondack Park, including one from Johnsburg. This delightful experience was part of a 2010 Summer Theatre Festival which includes 37 performances of four productions coming to 20 towns across the Adirondacks. Everyone here can enjoy live theater this summer. Shakespeare in the Park will produce Twelfth Night in North Creek on July 25, and at 16 other venues in the Park in the following 10 days. It shouldn't be missed. There is no admission charge. On Aug. 27 there will be a matinee production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, the show which ran for 1,136 performances on Broadway. This is another not-tobe missed opportunity to enhance the summer. It will be at North Creek's outstanding venue, Tannery Pond Community Center. Ticket and other information can be obtained at 352.7715. We are fortunate indeed to have these opportunities close to home and at such a reasonable cost. Enjoy! Becky Milner, North Creek

To the News Enterprise: Nero fiddled while Rome burned. He was the governing authority at the time. Today, the politicians and government bureaucrats we are responsible for voting into office are fiddling while Johnsburg’s future is being compromised as no simple fire could ever do. In the years immediately ahead, we face insane spending and taxes and very likely rocketing inflation at a level never reached in all of our town and country’s 200 plus years. This must be reined in, brought to a halt and reversed. It is high time that we put aside that which separates us and concentrate on the question at hand. Simply stated, how do we educate our young at a price we can afford? It was accomplished before and we can very well do it again if and when we come together in Johnsburg as Americans first with concern for our town, and for our children who, in the future will pay for our insanity. There is more than enough blame to go around for our current situation. There is the Johnsburg Central School board who in the years I have lived here has redirected their representation from students and taxpayers to special interests that benefited from constant increase in spending. And there are those of us who constantly complain to each other about the waste of tour tax dollars, but never get up a sufficient head of steam to really do something about it. It is high time to focus on what is good and necessary to pass on to our children; a solid education and a school whose quality and sound fiscal condition will attract investment and jobs for them when they graduate. For those of you who feel like I do, please consider joining, participating in and supporting an organization dedicated to doing something effective about it. Phil Santasiero, North Creek

Glorious day, 170 young anglers mark annual kids fishing derby

Derby From page 1 Saturday was a prolific day for Kim Johnson, Dillsburg, PA, who led the way with catching the most fish from shore, 49. Other first place winners were Kyle Williams Jr., North Syracuse, NY who brought in the largest (and only one of day) bullhead; Chase Hutchins, Indian Lake and Tim Lutz, Anoramdale, NY tied for largest perch. A few rock bass were caught with Jack Tunkel, Pennington, NJ narrowly winning with a nine ouncer. In the small mouth category, a thirteen ounce bass caught by Will Sullivan, Great Meadows, NJ led the pack. First and second prize certificates and

modest cash prizes were awarded to kid fishers for each species of fish caught. While everyone could not win a first prize, every child who entered was a winner. The expectation after tossing a line in the water was really reward enough. Many children caught fish and enjoyed the thrill of bringing the fish to the colorful weigh stations where members of the Fish & Game Association took great care to treat each fish as a potential prize winner. An ongoing casting contest awarded multiple fishing lure prizes for tossing a lure into a floating ring, raffles provided prizes throughout the morning for all kid fishers and a grand raffle at the derby’s end awarded over 30 rod and reel combinations. All this plus over 450

hamburgers & hot dogs, and soft drinks provided free to participants and their adult supervisors. An ice cream wagon provided a cool treat at mid-morning. Funds for the derby were provided by local businesses, Fish and Game Association member donations, friends of kids fishing, and a few out of town and national companies. This year, the Indian Lake Community Yard Sale made a significant donation as well. Many parents new to the derby were gratefully incredulous that the entire day was without cost. The generosity of all of the donors and the dedication of the Fish and Game Association members and friends who work at the derbies has resulted in an annual event unrivaled in the North Country. The Indian Lake/Blue Mountain Lake Fish and Game Association, Inc. is an organization dedicated to the promotion of better fishing and hunting, sportsmanship, and conservation including training and support of youth activities associated with these goals. Instruction in the proper handling of firearms and the support of legislation pertaining to the use and ownership of firearms are important values to the Association. Membership is open to any person who has similar interests and is willing to support the Association through occasional volunteering of time to help further the Associations' goals. You may contact the Association by writing to Box 521, Indian Lake, NY 12842.

Jaine Smith, age 8, of Kattskill Bay holds her trophy for the largest fish of the day, a 2-pound 1-ounce large mouth bass. Derby Chairman Bill Murphy is pictured on the left and Fish and Game Association member Mike Brooks is on the right. Pictured at left: More than 170 local youth turned out for the Town of Indian Lake during the Indian Lake / Blue Mt. Fish and Game Association’s annual Kids Fishing Derby held on July 3.

Youth fish tourney set in Schroon SCHROON LAKE — The Schroon Lake Fish and Game Club will host the annual Kids Fishing Derby on Saturday, July 31, 9 a.m. to noon at the Schroon town dock. The event is open to all accompanied children ages 12 and younger and will be held rain or shine. Event organizers will provide worms and fishing instruction, if needed. All entrants are welcome to free hot dogs, refreshments, and will receive a goodie bag of free gifts. Prizes will be awarded in multiple categories. For additional information, contact Joe Steiniger at 321-0947.

Bed races thrive in Long Lake despite DOT objection By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com LONG LAKE — The traditional bed races returned to Long Lake July 4 as the tourism department rerouted the races to accommodate for the state Department of Transportation denial of their permits. DOT reasons for the denial included no reasonable detours for the event, the date and time of the event correspond with times holiday travelers would be utilizing Route 30 and the event presents high safety risks. The races were moved from Route 30 to School Street and time adjustments were made. “The DOT may have denied us for safety reasons and lack of detours, but the Hamilton County Sheriff and New York State Troopers were on hand to put their stamp of approval on the festivities,” said tourism director Alexandra Roalsvig. “The Long Lake

Rescue Squad was standing by with the ambulance and we were off to the races.” Eight teams participated in this year ’s races, returning for the first time since 1992. Teams included: Gurney Journey, Birth of a Nation with birthing mother aboard sponsored by the Long Lake Rescue Squad, The Cellar Crew dressed as pink magical fairies, The Viking Ship with Molly Irvine and her crew, Rayome University, The Black Flies, Town of Long Lake Parks, Recreation & Water Department, Hoss’s Country Corner, and Wallace Contracting/Fire Department. The Black Flies received best in show honors and the winners are as follows: First place - Wallace Contracting/Fire Department Second place - The Black Flies Third place - The Cellar Crew “We hope that the success of this year ’s event will return the races to an annual tradition,” said Roalsvig.

Celebration From page 1 the weekend at 6:30 p.m. On Saturday, July 24, a parade will begin at Rice Road and welcomes all interested parties to design floats. Contact Tony Clark at 634-5503 for information on being part of the parade. The main event will take place after the parade at 1 p.m. — a waterball tournament welcomes area fire departments to compete against each other in this themed event. Competitors will accompany tier pumper trucks to Long Lake and use hoses to move balls over certain obstacles. “We have invited roughly 80 fire departments to participate,” said Paula Piraino, department secretary. “It’s shaping up to be an exciting event.” There is a $100 registration fee for competing departments and they are encouraged to sign-up soon. The afternoon will continue with family fun and food at the ballfield in the hamlet of Long Lake. The DJ will return from 6:30-10:30 p.m. Saturday and fireworks will go off at dusk from the lake. “We want to encourage members from surrounding communities as well as Long Lake locals — young and old — to come out in support of the fire department,” said Piraino. “Their service deserves to be celebrated.
