Mountain women can be heroes NORTH CREEK — A lively program of songs and stories, “Remarkable Women of the Adirondacks,” is being sponsored by Johnsburg Historical Society Sept. 10. Featuring folksinger Peggy Lynn and storyteller Sandra Weber, the event will be presented to the public at Tannery Pond Community Center in North Creek at 7:30 p.m. Weber ’s exhibit in the Widlund Gallery of TPCC opens at 6 p.m. just prior to the performance. JHS is also sponsoring the program during the day at Johnsburg Central School for grades 4 through 8 without cost to the school. This is part of the “Johnsburg Local History Project,” a joint project of JHS and the North Creek Depot Museum. The experiences of Johnsburg’s own Jeanne Robert Foster, poet, editor, model, actress, social activist and boundary breaker, will be celebrated as well as the experiences of isolated pioneer women, suffragist women, the first woman to climb all 46 high peaks, women who fed the loggers, bareback horseriding women, and women who fought for social justice. painted with a palette knife. One of her works was recently published in "The Pastel

Journal" as a national contest finalist. “My landscape paintings are an emotional response to nature and open spaces, simplified to express not only serenity or grandeur, but also the under tone of darkness, mystery and loss attached to our experience of nature,” Feuer said. “They range from the contemplative to the dramatic in mood, drawing the viewer into the scene as a lone observer. Whether using oil paint or pastel, I’m seeking the magic in shimmering layers of color to balance the tension between reflection and darkness, air and mass, serenity and energy.” For more information on Feuer and her work, visit www.karifeuer.com. Local pastel artist receives honors from Degas Pastel Society By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com INDIAN LAKE — Joann Quinlivan of Indian Lake has received a coveted juried membership into the Degas Pastel Society for her representations of local landscapes on the canvas. Quinlivan’s work can be viewed in the Rookery Gallery of Abanakee Studios located on Route 28. There, she features both original works and giclee prints that are all

available for sale through the end of the gallery’s 2010 season. Quinlivan has always been drawn towards landscapes when she holds a brush is her hand. “Painting landscape out-of-doors presents the challenge of continuously changing light,” she said of her devotion to the medium. “The ability to deliver color brilliance combined with the immediacy of the pastel medium allows me creative spontaneity — I get to deliver to the viewer the full spectrum

of color that I see. To me, this is the gift of the artist to the viewer.” The Degas Society is aptly named in honor of Edgar Degas (1834 -1917), the artist most widely recognized for transforming pastel from a sketching tool into a major artistic medium. This prestigious society is headquartered in New Orleans and is dedicated to fostering and exhibiting artistic excellence utilizing the pastel medium. Quinlivan is past-president of the United Society of Pastel Artists, as well as, a mem-

ber of The San Clemente Art Association in California, The Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts and The Arts Guild of Old Forge. She conducts workshops in the techniques of painting in soft pastel and watercolor and accepts commissions. Her work has received many awards in competitions throughout the U.S., and has been recognized in national and international art publications. Joann’s work is represented by galleries in New York and California and can be viewed at www.joanquinlivanart.blogspot.com.

here was a great celebration at the Warrensburg Fish Hatchery to celebrate the 75th birthday of Kathrine Conlon Ross. It was also the Conlon reunion. A beautiful day and so much chats about old times. Wade Hammond from Birmingham, AL was in concert at the Sodom Community Church on Sunday night. Ben and Mavis Miller and Ryan and Keisha Sprague celebrated anniversaries July 18. Ona Dunkley was pleased to have her nephew, Fred Allen visit her while in the area. Many area Boy Scouts helped with their fundraiser Saturday. They had a car wash. Ron and Brandy Millington of Bolivar visited Ryan and Keisha Sprague over the weekend. Many enjoyed attending the wedding of Brain May and Amanda Millington on Saturday. Earl Allen and Kjerstia Schilinski from Bakers Mills, Dezore Cleveland from Schroon Lake, David Moffat from Schroon Lake, Fabiann Conlon from North Creek, and Derek and Courtney Millington and family enjoyed the Hit ‘n’ Miss

e just had a week devoted to invasive species education. I asked Emily DeBolt from Lake George Association to come tour our garden and discuss possible problems we might have at the Ski Bowl. Emily owns a native plant nursery and she is the educator for LGA. I was pretty sure we had a few problems. One of them is cork bark, or burning bush. By Ski Bowl Park Gardening Group There were two plants near the old Ski Bowl building we had moved to the garden and I had planted four others around the fence. I had Youth Works workers remove them last Wednesday. We also had a honeysuckle I had planted

engine show in Edinburg over the weekend. It is a great place to take campers and enjoy. Births Larry and Janelle Bacon are proud parents of Cody John born July 13. He was a little over 6 pounds and 7 inches long. His twin sisters are happy to be able to hold him. Events The Dalaba Reunion will be July 24 at Camp Triumph on the Edwards Hill Road in Bakers Mills. It will be all day. Please bring food to share. Happy Birthday Emily Christopher (96), Joe Granger, Marvin Viele, Mike Schilinski Faye Beavers, Paulo Po, Mikelean Allen, Shamus Ordway, Suzy Virgil, Rebecca Persons, Kim Houser, Amanda Otruba, Debby Austin, Doralyn Holley, Nicole Conlon, Roger Lewis, Aaron Conlon, Zachery Kramar, Deann Lawrence, Hayley Killion, Kyle Mulligan, Rony Warrington, Tyler Cook, Tammy Cook and Kaleb Persons. Enjoy each and every day. from the woods and had bushed out into a very pretty shrub that is now gone. That was all Emily found in the garden, but as we surveyed the surrounding area she spotted some spotted knapweed. This is the pretty, but straggly pink-lavender flower found all over the sides of the road. We removed what we found near the garden. Finally, there are Russian Olive trees that had been planted before it was known to be so invasive. They are located on the road into the Ski Bowl. We found three places this pest has invaded already. I am hoping to get town permission to remove these bushes and replace them with something that is more environmentally friendly. Now that we have cleaned up our act, I would like to encourage all of you to go on the Internet and look for Adirondack Invasive Species. There are pretty good pictures and lots of information. If we can keep these out of our own backyard, at least we are trying to do our part. Gardening is a continuing education. There is so much to learn. It is ever-changing.

Who is to blame? To the News Enterprise: We’ve blamed the teachers and their union and we’ve blamed the Johnsburg Central School Board. A large portion of the blame, however, should be placed on the shoulders of the voters. We the voters allowed these school board members to hold office. We voted for them or, worse yet, we didn’t vote at all. Years ago, the board was staffed by business owners who had no personal connections with any person employed by the school. They handled the school’s finances as they would their own. How long has it been since the board had a split decision on any item that was brought before them? Are they all of the same mind? Have they rehearsed the meeting in advance? Or is someone pulling all of the strings? Now, in a time of economic depression, we need to find interested candidates who have no affiliations with the teachers and staff. People who can think independently and have the ability to manage the school’s finances in a responsible manner. Richard Stewart, Johnsburg

Thoughts on Johnsburg Central School To the News Enterprise: I am writing to offer some thoughts on the current situation regarding Johnsburg Central School. 1 - There are no winners in the blame game. 2 - It’s easier to catch flies with honey than with vinegar. 3 - A man was pulling a long chain along the road. A neighbor stopped and asked, “What ya pulling that chain for.” The man with the chain answered, “Well, I sure can’t push it anywhere.” I am not a native of the town of Johnsburg, having been here only since 1985. I have no relatives here. In spite of my flatlander status, I have found the overwhelming majority of residents and flatlanders to be reasonable, friendly and thoughtful people. With that in mind, here are some suggestions which may help find a reasonable answer to the unproductive situation that exists today. Based on my business experience, I believe that, if these suggestions are seriously considered and implemented in some form, our community can meet the financial challenges of the next five or more years and provide a quality education for young people in our community. We must establish a working group of teachers, administrators, elected officials, parents, students and residents. I suggest two from each interest group. The major qualifications would be to agree to: 1 - Come to the working group with an open mind. 2 - Practice good listening skills. 3 - Agree to proceed in an atmosphere of courtesy, trust and mutual respect. 4 - Choose a chair, assistant chair, recording secretary and corresponding secretary who will also act as an executive committee to prepare agendas, etc. 5 - Develop and agree on a mission statement. For example, “We are here to ...”. 6 - Agree on what the final product will be. (A long term budget? A written plan? A signed agreement?) 7 - Establish a regular meeting time and length of meeting. For example, the business alliance meets every Thursday at Bar Vino. The rules are a follows: The meeting lasts one hour. No interrupting. There are no “bad ideas.” 8 - Communicate regularly with the residents of the school district. Woody Widlund North River

Johnsburg Goes to War: 1861-1865 The first Waldrons to the area were William G. Waldron and his wife Judike, married in 1804. They moved to this area with their five children and first settled near “Elm Hill” where they built a log cabin. Later, they moved to North Creek. Five Waldron boys served in the Civil War, all are buried in Union Cemetery in North Creek, as are Rollin Russell and Beriah Wilber. Special thanks to Mr. Courtney Tucker and Sharon (Waldron) Hammond for many of the details in this week’s column. Waldron, Cortland Born July 24, 1842 and listed as 18 in the 1860 census. Son of Cornelius and Margaret (Washburn). Enlisted Sept. 3, 1864 in Co. D of the 175th NYVI at Plattsburgh and paid an enlistment bonus of $33.33. Died in Feb. 29, 1865 of “chronic diarrhea” (Dysentery) on the board the steam transport “Northern Lights” enroute from Morehead City, NC to New York harbor. Waldron, John Daniel Born May 18, 1845 and listed as 15 in the 1860 census. Son of Daniel and Aseneth (Hills, possibly of Abenaki heritage). Nineteen years of age when he signed on with Cortland in Plattsburgh to serve in Co. D of the 175th. Became ill with pleurisy on his left side and heart disease contracted near Winchester, VA in Nov. - just months after his enlistment, from. Sent home to Johnsburg sick with second stage “Variola” and affidavits filed indicate that he was so sick that he could not even raise his head from his pillow. Furloughed at the end of the war. Received a pension as an invalid after the war and died Jan. 6, 1937. Waldron, Josiah D. Born in 1846 and listed as 14 in the 1860 census. Enlisted July 26, 1862 at age 16 in Horicon and served as a fifer in Co. D of the 118th NYVI. Died Jan. 20, 1863 at age 17 of fever brought on by measles in camp near Fort Ethan Allen in Virginia near Washington, DC. Waldron, Luther A. Born Jan. 10, 1843 and listed as age 17 in the 1860 census. Younger brother of John Waldron. Enlisted Sept. 3, 1864 in Co D. of the 175th with Cortland and John. In a march that Oct. from Harpers Ferry to Cedar Creek Corporal Luther Waldron contracted a severe cold which is said made him quite deaf in both ears. On Oct. 19, 1854 at the Battle of Cedar Creek, Luther was shot in the back while guarding an ammunition train with Isaac Roblee, his brotherin-law also of North Creek. After surgery, Luther was furloughed until his wound could heal and his furlough had to be extended as he remained too ill to report to duty. Discharged at war ’s end and, suffering from what today we might call post traumatic stress disorder. He received a pension as an invalid until his death March 14, 1913. Luther married Eliza Cross Nov. 10, 1867 and had five children. One of the many descendants of that marriage was Carol Thomas. Richard Stewart recalls his 8th grade teacher at Johnsburg Central, Clara Waldron (Luther ’s daughter) bringing to class the minnie ball that wounded her father. Waldron, William Henry Born 1827, son of William G. Waldron and Judith/Judah (Bradt). Married Betsy Roblee in 1845. Enlisted Feb 14, 1864 “at Eldridge’s” in Johnsburg and paid a bounty of $100. Served in Co I of the 93rd NYVI. On May 2 at Brandy Station, VA (in the vicinity of the Battle of the Wilderness) “while sharpening some tent hooks, by his act of catching some brush made a mistake and accidentally cut off his left thumb” and severely cut two of the fingers of that hand. Returned to duty in Oct., but then furloughed as affidavits indicate this injury had totally destroyed the use of his left hand. He was sick when he arrived in Washington, DC and while in the hospital was also diagnosed with rheumatism the result of exposures while in the field. Ill when discharged with affidavit of disability Nov. 23, 1864. Survived the war and his injury and died March 22, 1898 at age 71. Russell, Rollin Born 1836 in Vermont and not listed in the 1860 census. Served in Co. B (unit not recorded). Died Sept. 4, 1906. Wilber, Beriah Born 1839 and not listed in 1860 Johnsburg census. Served in Co D of the 3rd NY Cavalry. Died Aug. 28, 1896. If you have any additional information on these men, or men from earlier columns, please contact me at 251-3009 or pearsall.glenn@gmail.com. Second annual Streetfest offers something for everyone By John Gereau

johng@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — The community of Ticonderoga will be host to the second annual Streetfest Saturday, July 31, bringing a mix of arts and craft vendors, food kiosks and other unique exhibitors to Main Street. The event, which is quickly evolving into one of the region’s premiere family-friendly arts and craft fairs, drew more than 2,000 people during its inaugural year. “Downtown Ticonderoga will become a festive pedestrian mall with food, live entertainment, interesting things to see, and opportunities to purchase unique crafts and gifts,” said organizer Sue Rathbun, who chairs the Ticonderoga Montcalm Partnership, sponsor of Streetfest. To facilitate Streetfest, Montcalm Street — the main thoroughfare in Ticonderoga — will be shut down

from Lake George Avenue at Sunshine Laundry to Champlain Avenue at Glens Falls National Bank. The street will close at 8 a.m. for set-up, with the event kicking off at 10 a.m. Fort Ticonderoga’s awardwinning Fife and Drum Corps will open the event with a performance down the center of the street, followed by other musical groups who will provide live entertainment throughout the day. Main Street will be filled with arts and craft vendors, specialty food kiosks, sidewalk sales, a farmers market, and a display of antique cars, boats and other exhibitors. There will be plenty for kids to do as well, with hands-on arts demonstrations and Penelope the Clown offering face painting and balloon art throughout the day. Participating vendors will range from artisans specializing in wood crafts, toys, jewelry, glass and rustic furniture to food vendors offering tasty treats like snow-cones, deep-fried Oreos, fried dough and

other specialties. In addition, downtown businesses will join the fray with kiosks and specials, creating a downtown atmosphere not unlike Burlington’s popular Church Street. “Our first Streetfest last year was a great success,” Rathbun said, noting planning for this year ’s event began even earlier. “We’re determined that this year will be bigger and better. We look forward to welcoming people from the whole area of northern New York, as well as our friends from across Lake Champlain in Vermont.” The event will close at 4 p.m. with the street reopening to vehicles at 5 p.m. A list of participating crafters, car and boat dealers and the location of each will be available to visitors as they enter either end of Streetfest. Since the event is weather-dependent, a rain date has been scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 1.

Fun, food, entertainment, arts, crafts, antique cars and boats and more can be found at Streetfest 2010, coming Saturday, July 31, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to downtown Ticonderoga. (The above photo was taken at Streetfest 2009 by Vikki Colvin for the Ticonderoga Montcalm Street Partnership, event sponsor.)

The benefit event, to assist Glens Falls native Angela Edmunds Kilmartin, 49, is a chicken barbecue set for Saturday, July 31 at West Mountain Ski Center. To be held from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., the event includes both a live auction and silent auction of donated new goods and services, live entertainment, a bounce house, a yoga session, and 50-50 raffles. All proceeds are to help Kilmartin with continuing expenses she’s shouldering during her lengthy bout with facial cancer. The auction features Martin Seelye calling the bids, and the “Laugh Yoga” sessions are presented by Tobi Gifford of Lemon Tree Yoga. Auction items received so far include a 10-piece cookware set donated by Rachael Ray; an 11-foot by 13-foot area rug valued at $900 donated by Buy-Low Carpet; a $100 silver ankle bracelet from Scoville's Jewelers; a day’s rental of a lowboy trailer from Falls Farm & Garden; a two-hour pontoon boat ride donated by Schroon Lake Marina; a family pass for six admissions at Ausable Chasm; an original work of art by Irene Magee; two Adirondack chairs given by Windy Baker; a pool opening or closing service call donated by Northern Poolscapes; and many other items and gift certificates. Kilmartin still has several more surgeries and reconstructive surgeries to endure. She had worked for CR Bard for 20 years, but lost her job about 18 months ago due to the continuing illness, according to Debbie Freebern Loomis. Loomis is a member of the group After Cancer Encouragement and Support or ACES, formed by Kilmartin’s relatives, friends and neighbors to raise money for Kilmartin to help offset her financial stress. Loomis’ husband is a cousin of Kilmartin’s. More information about the event and Kilmartin’s battle with the illness are available on the Web site www.acesforangela.com. The ACES group can be reached at a4ateam@hotmail.com. Loomis can be reached at 251-4278. For those unable to attend, donations are welcome, Loomis said, adding a fund for Kilmartin has been set up at Glens Falls National Bank. “Everyone is invited to attend, and all donations are greatly appreciated,” said Loomis.

Society. The atlas is cited as one of the most comprehensive volumes of information available on the Adirondack region. Jenkins is also the lead author of Acid Rain in the Adirondacks: An Environmental History, published in 2007. “The effects of climate change in the Adirondacks are evident today,” said Jenkins. “Winters are warmer and shorter, with less snow and ice; spring is coming earlier and fall later. Long term trends are also starting to occur — birds are moving north, plants are flowering early, evergreen trees are retreating upwards in the mountains, some boreal species are in decline.” Jenkins will expand on his assertion that changes in personal energy consumption can alter the current trajectory of global warming, and he will suggest how the Adirondacks can take a leading role nationally by achieving energy independence in 20 years. Jenkins will conduct a signing before the presentation in the museum’s Visitor Center from 3 to 5 p.m. Books will also be available at the evening program. Moose dies in Dannemora L

ast week, residents of Dannemora were excited to learn of a large moose feeding from a bird feeder in the side yard of a local residence on the General Leroy Manor Road. In the heat of the day, as temperatures topped the 90-degree mark, a large crowd of on-lookers gathered along the highway while attempting to get a glimpse of the massive animal. The numerous cars parked along the roadside soon drew the attention of the state police, who dispersed the crowd of spectators. The moose apparently appeared to be in distress and when it later collapsed, troopers called the Department of Environmental Conservation. A state DEC wildlife biologist responding to the scene found a yearling moose that was believed to have died from heat stroke. Upon examination, the biologist reported the young, bull moose had an internal body cavity temperature of 107 degrees. It was believed to have died of heat stroke, which typically sets in when body temperatures reach 104 degrees. Moose are a circumpolar, boreal species. They are typically found in the cooler climates of boreal forest areas across the Northern Hemisphere. While they thrive in such cold weather environments, moose are easily stressed by overheating, and by other factors such as predators, or the prying eyes of spectators.

They don’t do well in situations where there is a combination of high heat and humidity. In such conditions, they prefer spending time in water. However, it wasn’t heat that did him last week. The necropsy performed by DEC revealed the true cause of death was brain worm, a neurological disease commonly transmitted by whitetailed deer. By DEC estimates, there are currently between 500 to 600 moose in the state. Brainworm is a major concern, according to DEC wildlife biologist Ed Reed, who explained, “Brainworm is still a problem. That’s probably why the moose in Dannemora was still wandering around in the heat. We’ve been seeing problems with brain worm primarily in areas with high deer densities such as Rensselaer and Washington counties, where the deer density is greater than 8-10 animals per square mile. ” “Deer have brain worm but it doesn’t affect them as it does moose. Deer pass the nematode in their feces, where it is picked up by snails, which act as a host”, Reed revealed, “And they [snails] deposit it on the leaves and grass.” Moose, which are primarily browsing animals that eat the leaves, twigs, and buds of hardwood and softwood trees. It is easy to see how the animals can contract brain worm, which frequently causes cerebrospinal nematodiasis, a disease of the nervous system, that often, results in death. They can consume nearly 40-60 pounds of browse every day. Fortunately for moose, the deer density in the Adirondacks ranks among the lowest in the entire state. It is one of the major factors responsible for their return and ultimate survival. In fact, the moose that died in Dannemora may not have been a local resident, since the animals are known to travel great distances. The animal’s tendency to range far and wide has created additional problems. Due to their propensity to travel, a moose could be in Washington County one week and in Clinton County by the next. This ranginess is also responsible for the ever growing danger of vehicle/moose collisions. This is some good news for people that happen to experience a close encounter with a moose while driving, as the New York State Legislature has amended section 11-0915 of the Environmental Conservation Law concerning the disposition of moose carcasses resulting from vehicle collisions. The revised amendment now allows people who accidentally

Moose, such as this one photographed in a garden in downtown Lake Placid last year, have become a common sight in the Adirondacks in recent years. They have been known to frequent residential areas, as the photograph confirms. kill a moose and damage their motor vehicle, to obtain a permit that allow them to keep the carcass. While the measure offers little consolation for wrecking their car, a large quantity of moose steaks and burgers can certainly serve supplement the family budget while the car is undergoing repair.
