North Country Hardship Fund gears up for Wayne Stock By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK — Over the past several months, North Country Hardship Fund volunteers have poured hours of planning into this year ’s Wayne Stock III to bring the organizations biggest annual event to new heights this year. The fundraiser is planned for Saturday, Aug. 7, beginning at noon at Ski Bowl Park. Wayne Stock originated in 2008 as a one-time fundraiser to benefit Wayne Bukovinsky and his family after he was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident. From that first event grew the North Country Hardship fund — a nonprofit organization that aims to raise money for local people who have accrued unexpected financial strains due to tragedy. “After the success of the first event, we decided to continue hosting fundraisers for other deserving people and families,” said Steve Studnicky, Hardship Fund member. “There was an outpouring of support for that first Wayne Stock and
that is the beauty of living in a small community — everyone is willing to give.” Wayne Stock has advanced significantly in the past couple of years and this year will debut professional staging and sounds from outside vendors as well as professional lighting from Creative Stage Lighting. Ten musical acts will entertain the crowds throughout the evening. Featured entertainment includes Vinnie Leddick, Blonde Roots, S.L. Smith Band, Phil Camp, Don’t Quit Your Day Jobbers, Donna Britton Band, Finger Diddle, Dogtown Cadillac, Groove Therapy and Hoffmeister/Keystone Band. Two auctions — one live and one silent — will also run throughout the day. Food and beverages will also be sold by Andie’s Restaurant. “So many people have given to this event to benefit the causes of the North Country Hardship Fund,” said Studnicky. “We appreciate everything that was given, whether it was money, time, or donations.” Wayne Stock raises thousands of dollars each year to benefit the

Morse finished 11th in her age group and 312th overall out of 2,500 runners to raise nearly $600 for the local not-for-profit organization. “Kendyl restored some of my faith in the caring and self-less attitudes of today’s youth,” said

Johnsburg Library anticipates largest book sale to date By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK — Volunteers of the Johnsburg Library assembled at Tannery Pond Community Center this week to begin preparations for one of their biggest annual events — a book sale scheduled for Saturday, July 31 with a preview party Friday, July 30. “Dozens of volunteers are donating their time to make this the best and biggest Library Book Sale ever,” said event organizer Judith Harper. The sale will be held in the Tannery Pond Community Center. The preview party will kick off the event from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, followed by the sale on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Refreshments will be available. Friday evening’s preview party, hosted by The Friends of the Johnsburg Library, will
give interested readers a first look at the selection of books for sale as well as provide entertainment by local favorites, Don’t Quit Your Day Job. Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served and a silent auction will be featured, offering many prizes donated by local businesses. The preview party is $15 per couple and $8 per person. Event organizers are still searching for as much help as possible to get the event off the ground and ensure that it lives up the standards that it has set in previous years. “We are still looking for book sale volunteers to help with preparations and to be available the day of the sale,” said Harper. “We appreciate all the help we can get.” If interested in volunteering to sort books, bake for the refreshments sale or to volunteer on the day of the sale, call Harper at 2513006.

Hardship Fund member Steve Studnicky. “She is a great young lady with an impressive love for running and she put her heart and soul into doing this for us.” The North Country Hardship Fund was born from the first Wayne Stock event held in 2008 to benefit Wayne Bukovinsky after a tragic motorcycle accident. The organization now continues to raise funds for families and individuals across Warren, Essex, Hamilton, Washington and Saratoga counties who find themselves in financial hardship because of unexpected tragedy. The Hardship Fund recently came to the aid of several people and donated $2,000 toward the families who lost children in the recent Fort Edward fire. Morse and her parents Fred and Sue of Bird Pond Road in North Creek approached Studnicky and the Hardship Fund during the planning stages of her marathon as they sought out an organization to benefit from her efforts.

“I just love to run,” said Kendyl. “And I wanted my run to help out some local people who were experiencing tragedy.” The Morse family is no stranger to unexpected medical bills. Kendyl was born three months premature and spent just over 3.5 months in the hospital after she was born, bringing the goals of the Hardship Fund a little closer to home. Kendyl is a member of Johnsburg’s varsity cross-country team and plans to pursue running in college after she graduates this year. She finished the marathon with a personal best time of 1 hour 54 minutes and 30 seconds. her goal was to finish in under two hours and she and her family were surprised by the final results. “She blew me out of the water,” Fred Morse said. “When she rounded the first turn after a loop around Mirror Lake, I knew she was setting a pretty rapid pace. It was amazing to watch her run this race.” “While she has been a great inspiration to us, it seems that we may have inspired her as well,” Studnicky said. Kendyl was joined in the marathon by four
other local runners including Bridgette Crooms, Debbie Bedard, Traci Watson and Jill Pederson and was coached from the sidelines by Johnsburg Central School corss-country coach, Gary Wilson. In the weeks prior to her race, Kendyl canvassed the local community for donations in either lump sums or per mile commitments. “The community support was amazing,” she said. “Despite the economy, people are not afraid to give a few dollars for a cause like this and that’s a good thing.”
Wayne Stock From page 1 Hardship Fund and Studnicky is convinced this year will break some records. All are welcome to bring a chair, a cooler and enjoy the day. Glass containers and dogs are prohibited. For more information, visit the the Wayne Stock III or North Country Hardship Fund Facebook pages or www.northcountryharshipfund.org.

Dollars for Scholars introduces new program to benefit local children Plans include donating free books to Johnsburg families By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com JOHNSBURG — Springboarding on the success of Race the Train, a fundraiser for Johnsburg’s Dollars for Scholars chapter, has gathered over the past nine years, the organization has decided to introduce a new program. Books for Tots will host its first fundraiser dur-
ing Race the Train weekend Friday, Aug. 6 at Marsha’s Restaurant on Main Street in North Creek from 5 to 7 p.m. The fundraiser will provide a pre-race dinner with all proceeds benefiting the Book for Tots program. Take-out dinners will be available beginning at 4:30 p.m. and tickets will be on sale in the lobby of Community Bank as well as at the
door. Pre-sale tickets are encouraged and the cost of the meal is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, and $6 for children eight and under. The meal includes homemade spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread & butter, cake, and a beverage. The Books for Tots program is designed to get children interested in reading and engaged in learning at the youngest age possible. With the funds donated, Johnsburg Dollars for Scholars will purchase new chil-
dren’s books this year and donate them to all the families of newborn children in the Johnsburg Central School District. “National studies have shown that having a love for books before entering school is the single most important factor in fostering success in school,” said Johnsburg Dollars for Scholars President Ann Arsenault. “As a nonprofit organization with the primary goal of fostering and rewarding scholarship, we hope to provide a gift of
Race From page 1 with interest in running to have a chance.” A registration party will be hosted at the North Creek station Aug. 6, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and registration will also be available before the race from 7 to 7:45 a.m., Aug. 7. The train will depart the North Creek station at 8 a.m. to bring runners and spectators to Riparius where the train will return and the runners will follow the same route. Awards, refreshments and raffles will take place in North Creek following the race. All are welcome to attend a pre-race pasta dinner hosted by Marsha’s Restaurant on Main Street. Take-outs are available at 4:30 p.m. and dinner will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. Dinner tickets are required and are available at Marsha’s Restaurant as well as North Creek Community Bank. With 324 runners already entered and many expected spectators, local businesses will see a growth in business the day of the race. “Businesses certainly benefit from the race, but the race also benefits greatly from the support of businesses,” said Arsenault. “This is not just a race, but a community and family event.” A one-mile family fun run will be held on Main Street after the main race. The cost is $5 to run and children as well as adults are welcome to enter. This family attraction is what makes Race the Train so much more than just a race, ac-
cording to Arsenault. Registration is up by 45 runners from last year ’s race already and Arsenault is encouraged by the interest. Dollars for Scholars was able to raise $16,000 before expenses last year and used the money for scholarships for Johnsburg Central School graduates moving on to college. More information can be found on-line at the registration Web sites or by calling 251-2602.
Adirondack TREKS, an outdoor club for Gore Region youth as an extension of the Johnsburg Youth Commission, visited several local waterfalls last week. captivating, colorful new children’s books.” Following the success that Race the Train has developed, Arsenault hopes that Dollars for Scholars can get this new and innovative program off the ground in a similar manner. “I can only hope that Books for Tots is as successful as Race the Train has become,” she said. “It is a worthy cause and something that should be important to this community.” Race the Train has developed into much more than a fundraiser. Garnering ample community support, the event has become townwide tradition. “Books for Tots is one way of thanking the community for making Race the Train so successful,” said Arsenault. “It is our pleasure to do it.” Johnsburg Dollars for Scholars, which raises money for annual scholarships given to Johnsburg Central School graduates who exhibit a dedication to volunteering and who plan to continue their education, has recently seen an increase in community support. They just concluded their most successful phonathon yet, despite the financial strains that the economy is placing on the individual, according to Arsenault. Anyone wishing to contribute donations or to get involved with Dollars for Scholars can contact Arsenault at 251-2602.

Thomas Anthony Collard
•MY PUBLIC NOTICES•
ELIZABETHTOWN — A 30-year-old missing persons case has likely been solved, as a former Minerva resident has confessed to killing his wife in 1980, police say. The murder was detailed by law enforcement authorities testifying in court July 23. Thomas Anthony Collard, 62, has been charged with second degree murder in the case, after he was questioned and arrested last week in Samson, Ala. Collard was in Elizabethtown Town Court for a preliminary hearing July 26, after his recent confession led to his arrest by New York State Police for the murder of his first wife, June Collard, who he reported missing in November 1980. Thirty years old at the time, she was last seen in Johnsburg. Formerly a resident of Olmstedville in the town of Minerva, Collard had moved to Samson, Ala. in 1994. Investigators from New York State Police Troop B recently traveled to Alabama to meet with Collard as part of their ongoing work on the case. It was there, police said, Collard ultimately confessed to causing the death of his former wife and described in detail how he had disposed of her body. Collard was immediately arrested, waived extradition hearings, and was flown to the area July 21. Arraigned in Elizabethtown, he was sent to Essex County Jail and held without bail. The courtroom was packed with many of his family members as Collard entered in prison garb and chains. Represented by public defender Brandon Boutelle, he entered a plea of not guilty. On the witness stand, investigator Karen DuFour from the Troop B Violent Crimes Investigation Team explained how, when they’re not busy investigating more recent crimes, her team continues work on “so-called cold cases” like that of June Collard’s. DuFour said she and another investigator had arranged with the Geneva County, Alabama Sheriff ’s Office to meet with Collard there. “I think his exact words were, ‘I know why you’re here,’” she said. Collard had been questioned about the case numerous times by police during the past 30 years. Collard was read his Miranda rights prior to being questioned, DuFour said, but declined an attorney. DuFour said Collard gave conflicting stories when asked

about the time leading up to June’s disappearance, giving investigators the impression he wasn’t being truthful. “He then told us that she went to his residence,” said DuFour, noting how the two were separated at the time. “They got into an argument.” DuFour read from Collard’s signed confession in which he allegedly claimed that, at one point during the argument, June picked up a knife. It was then, according to his written statement, he finally “let her have it.” “I punched her with my right hand,” he wrote, claiming she then fell through a door and against a hot water tank, breaking it. “I think she was dead when I hit her.” In his statement, Collard said he checked for signs of life, but found no pulse or breathing. “I was mad at myself for letting it happen,” he wrote, noting how he had become agitated by June “sleeping around.” He continued, “A person can only take so much.” Collard explained how he then dumped June’s body out a window into a hole that had been dug for a septic system. He covered the hole until spring when, his statement said, he burned brush in the hole, dumped some lime over the remains, bulldozed the hole, and built an addition to his house over it to conceal it. “At no point had I ever planned to cause harm to my wife,” Collard added to the statement in his own handwriting. Collard remained silent during the hearing, though appeared visibly frustrated at times. At one point, he mouthed the words, “I didn’t do it,” to family members in the gallery. Justice William Garrison ordered the case to trial and for Collard to continue to be held without bail. According to Essex County District Attorney Kristy Sprague, initial hearings for the trial will take place within the next 45 days. Sprague acknowledged some difficulty in prosecuting such an old case as some witnesses and evidence are no longer available, but she commended State Police for keeping track of important leads. June Collard’s disappearance in 1980 left three young children without a mother, including middle child Tammy Vanderwerker of Warrensburg, who was only 8 at the time. She told the media last week she always suspected her father, and she had contacted police through the years to keep them actively pursuing the case. Police are planning efforts to recover June Collard’s remains sometime soon, said Sprague, and that Collard’s children especially are hoping those efforts can be successful. “They want to give their mother a proper burial,” Sprague said, “and I think that’s the least they deserve at this point.”

Johnsburg Goes to War: 1861-1865
T
he old cemetery in North River lies at the top of Christian Hill off of 13th Lake Road. It is a quiet and restful place that holds the bodies of many veterans of American Wars. When I was first researching my book, “Echoes in these Mountains” I was struck by the number of veterans flags that were posted by grave sites given the relatively small population of that hamlet. Twenty Civil War veterans lay buried in this small cemetery, 10 of which I had reviewed in earlier columns. Below is a list of the additional 10 Civil War veterans buried in North River. Four of the men we know served with the 118th New York Volunteer Infantry. In a horrific half hour Sept. 16, 1864, the 118th lost 56 percdent of its men engaged in a successful assault of Confederate Fort Harrison, south of Richmond. The men from North River below survived that battle and the war. Bennett, John Born 1838 and listed as age 22 in the 1860 census. Believed to be the adopted son of Israel and Helen (Stiles). Served in Co. G in the 118th NYVI. Died Nov. 21, 1908. Cross, Horatio Born 1844, son of Reuben. Served in Co. G of the 93rd NYVI. Died May 7, 1916. Fuller, Duane Born Aug. 29, 1830, married to Mary Hills at the time of his enlistment. Served in Co. K of the NY Volunteer Cavalry. Died Sept. 28, 1906. Ingalls, William Born 1838. I cannot find a William Ingalls listed in the 1860 Johnsburg census, but there is list a Jane Ingalls, servant. William served in Co. I of the 117th NYVI and died Dec. 5, 1864 at age 26, possibly of war injuries. Monroe, Henry Born 1839, a twin son of Eli and Mary (Hayes). Served in Co. G of the 118th NYVI. Died June 10, 1889. Sanders, William Born 1830. Served in Co. E of the 22nd NYVI and later in Co. I of the 96th NYVI. Survived both enlistments and died Oct. 2, 1906.

Sargent, Elias K. Born 1833. Served in Co. G of the 118th NYVI with Henry Monroe. Died Feb. 28, 1895. Palmatier, Rev Able B. Born 1836 and not listed in the 1860 Johnsburg census. Served with Co. H of the 162nd NYVI. Died June 30, 1902. Turner, George H. Born 1834, son of George and Julia. Not listed in the 1860 Johnsburg census. Served in Co. A of the 2nd NYVI. Died June 22, 1900. Turner, Richard H. Born 1837, son of Rev Edward Turner and his wife Mary. Served in Co. G of the 118th with Henry Monroe and Elias Sargent. Died Jan. 2, 1897.

To the News Enterprise: When I was fourteen and started working at summer jobs, my father gave me some advice. He told me no matter whom I worked for, or whatever job they gave me to do, to work like I owned the company. That advice served me well throughout my career at IBM. That same advice should be heeded by the Johnsburg Central School Board. If they owned “the company,” I doubt very seriously that they would have taken a two hours a day, three days a week pre-K program run by the Cheerful Crickets with an enrollment of four students and bring it into the public school as a four hour a day, five days a week program requiring a full-time teacher and an teacher ’s aide without even knowing how many students will be enrolled this coming school year. The board has stated repeatedly that they had investigated the pre-K program for several months and that they stand by their decision that a full-time teacher with an aide is required to staff the program. If that is the case, I would like to see the “business plan” to support that decision and I would like them to take that business plan to a bank to see if the bank would advance them a $70,000 loan to fund the program. No bank that I have ever done business with would accept a plan like this. The school board has been operating the school budget on “auto pilot” for far too long with their tax and spend policies. It’s time for them to switch back to “manual” and start making prudent financial decisions.
In preparation of my program at Tannery Pond Community Center, North Creek next year, I would appreciate hearing from you if you have any additional information on these men or the soldiers listed in earlier columns. I can be contacted at 251-3009 or pearsall.glenn@gmail.com. Thank you.

anda Shapiro, neé Cook, is a Johnsburg native. Recently, she published her first novel, Sometimes That Happens With Chicken, with an exceptional twist. In the spirit of indie bands, Shapiro has written, edited and published 252pp, 2010, $15.00. this work without a formal editor or publication house. Her website, www.onegirlonenovel.com, details her truly ambitious quest to go it alone as an author and demonstrates her success to date. Further, she has also made the novel available both for purchase through Amazon.com and for free download from her website. In Sometimes That Happens With Chicken, Shapiro tells a unique story with intricate interpersonal relationships. Set in Manhattan, the novel examines how many people living in close proximity can live amongst each other and yet still be completely unknown to one another. In the bustle of everyday life, people become disconnected from their neighbors unless something happens which makes their worlds collide. The novel is written in vignettes, spending enough time with each of the eight main characters to build a close rapport with the reader. Shapiro writes about deeply human issues and displays how one action or one moment can create a maelstrom affecting individuals and families for generations. In one’s search to find comfort in a particular point in space and time, one is often unaware of how all the moments that have come before push and pull the individual in certain directions. These moments make us who we are, though they can often go unnoticed. Shapiro’s dissection of several common threads of human existence bring the reader through seven women’s lives. Their experiences are highly relatable, if somewhat tragic. Shapiro’s style invites the reader into her confidence. While telling the story, she makes little asides just for the reader. Her audience knows more about the characters in the novel than the characters know about each other. The reader is compelled to move forward, curious as to the outcome of the tale and wondering how the characters will fare. One becomes invested in these women’s lives, as they are privy to such intensely personal information and events. Sometimes That Happens With Chicken is a highly enjoyable, often intense and frequently serendipitous read. For more information or to purchase or download this very witty novel, please visit www.onegirlonenovel.com.

t happened to me again. I was attacked and threatened with a disease that can bring the chills, fever, swollen glands, pounding headaches, severe fatigue, a stiff neck, sore back and joint pain including a tingling in the arms and legs. I was lucky. I found the critter crawling on the back of my leg before it had the opportunity to hit pay dirt. The first time I noticed one was when two of my hunting partners found them on their flesh, last season. The little varmints can be found in many grassy, wooded and brushy areas or in stonewalls, woodpiles, tall grass and piles of leaves. They are more common today than

ever, in Northern New York. Many fear a warming climate is expanding their northern range. Most victims never feel the bite, but its aftermath can bring serious health complications and lifelong affects including musculoskeletal, neurological and cardiac problems. The most severe symptoms of the disease may not appear for weeks, months or even years after the bite. It’s a sneaky little pest that can be picked up simply by walking to the mailbox or mowing the lawn or attending a bar-b-que. Golfers are attacked as often as anglers or hunters. So are children who play outside, whether in the backyard or at the local ball field. Lyme disease, a bacteria delivered by a tick’s bite, is prevalent across the entire state. In fact, two out of the three counties with the highest incidence of Lyme disease in the entire country, are located in New York. And it appears to be spreading north. In 2008, there were 22 confirmed cases of Lyme disease in Essex County, while only four cases were reported in Franklin County and six in Clinton County. Even with such small numbers, precautions are advised. Hunters, especially those who sit watch on the ground while pursuing deer and turkey, should be extra careful. Anyone traveling, playing or spending time in the outdoors is susceptible to the tick borne disease. All of my brother ’s children, who live in the Hudson River Valley community of Red Hook, have had it. The family keeps a ready supply of tick tweezers and medication on hand at all times. “Whenever the kids play outdoors,” my brother ex-
SATURDAY July 31, 2010 plained, “they tuck their pant legs into their socks. Even so, we still have to check them over for ticks as soon as they're back inside. The ticks are real difficult to see. They are about the size of a single piece of pepper.” Lyme disease is caused by the bite of infected deer ticks, which are most active during the spring and early summer, and again in the fall. The best method to combat the affliction is to avoid getting a bite in the first place. This can be accomplished by limiting tick’s access to the skin by tucking pants into socks, and shirts into pants. When traveling in brushy and grassy areas, wear light-colored clothing, spray repellant around pant and shirt cuffs and always check for ticks after outings. If a tick is found, use tweezers to remove it and check for telltale signs of infection such as rashes. Three out of four victims report a bull’s eye-shaped red rash after being bitten. It can last for several days or weeks. Victims report aches and pain, numbness, fatigue and a stiff neck. Early detection is key! Treatment requires three weeks of a daily dose of antibiotics such as Doxycycline, Amoxicillin or Cefuroxime. Worse-case scenarios require 21-30 days of IV Therapy and hospitalization. Avoidance and protection isn’t always possible, but recognizing the warning signs can help victims to ward off further, more severe complications. Keep a watchful eye to remain ticked off.
