MINERVA — State Police have begun work on an empty half-acre lot off Wilson Road to uncover the remains of June Collard, who was allegedly killed by her husband here 30 years ago. Law enforcement officials are focusing their efforts on the site at 76 Wilson Road after a statement from Thomas Anthony Collard, 62, revealed the supposed location of June’s body. Collard, formerly a resident of Olmstedville who has been living in Samson, Ala. for the past 16 years, confessed to killing his wife in November 1980 and dumping her lifeless body out a kitchen window into a hole dug for a septic system. He then covered the hole until spring when, his statement said, he burned brush in the hole, dumped some lime over the remains, bulldozed the hole, and built an addition to his house over it to conceal it. The home has since burned down, and the site is littered with garbage and debris. Collard has been arrested under the charge of second degree murder and is incarcerated at

Attracts more than 700 spectators By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE — Chefs from across the region met at the Adirondack Museum July 29 in a fierce competition of campfire cooking. The first ever “Adirondacks are Cookin’ Out,” event challenged local chefs to design their own menus and present tasty creations all cooked over an open fire as part of the museums new exhibit, “Lets Eat! Adirondack Food Traditions Exhibit.” The event welcomed more than 700 spectators to the museum grounds. “We were very pleased with the turn-out,” said Susan Dineen, marketing director. “The chefs did and outstanding job and we hope to see them all back next year.” Chef Stephen Topper, executive chef at the Copperfield Inn tied for first prize in the competition with his presentation of braised balsamic rabbit with a side dish of succotash. creative Italian dishes at Lorenzo’s al Forno, one of North Creek’s newest restaurants. “The dish is a fabulous example of a ‘one pot meal,’” said Topper. “I think it closely resembles what a mountain man of centuries ago might have prepared over the fire, with a few modern additions.” The competition was judged by Tony Zazula, co-owner of “Commerce,” a contemporary American restaurant in Greenwich Village, Suvir Saran, a respected food authority, consultant and television personality, and Sally Longo, a chef and owner of Aunt Sally’s Catering in Glens Falls, and also the host of the TV program “Dinner at 8” on North News 8. Each were impressed with Toppers creations as well as presentations from other local chefs. Topper shared the win with chef Tom Morris of Mirror Lake Inn in Lake Placid. Other local chefs included sous chef Kevin Gardner and chef Luke Bowers of barVino in North Creek, and chef Eric Hample of The Cellar Restaurant in Long Lake.

Essex County Sheriff passes, leaves post open By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — The sudden loss of Essex County’s Sheriff to cancer had officials honoring his service to the community this week and wondering how his position will now be filled. Sheriff Henry Hommes died July 30, at his home in Willsboro, surrounded by friends and family. Hommes just won re-election last year after serving 12 years as Essex County Sheriff. Despite his history of cancer, his death came suddenly and was a surprise to family and co-workers. The Essex County Board of Supervisors dedicated their invocation to Hommes at their meeting Aug. 2, and displayed a memorial with his photograph. “He was an impeccably good sheriff,” said County Attorney Dan Manning, who had worked with Hommes as an Assistant District Attorney in 1993. “He was tough and unwavering when he needed to be, but treat-

ed everybody fairly.” Hommes’ death means Undersherrif Richard Cutting will assume the duties of sheriff until someone is either appointed or elected to the position. As Manning explained, Gov. David A. Paterson has the power to appoint a new county sheriff “with the advice and consent of the Senate, if in session.” In that case, the appointee would fill the position until Dec. 31, when an elected candidate would take over. “Personally, I don’t think the governor is likely to appoint because of the way things are going,” Manning said. The position could also remain vacant until a Nov. 2 election, in which case, the chosen candidate would assume the position immediately. With the deadline for filing primary petitions passed, each party will choose their candidate for the position by committee. Independent candidates have about 10 to 15 days left to file their petitions for the race.

Obituaries Sheriff Henry H. Hommes June 8, 1942 - July 30, 2010 Sheriff Henry H. Hommes, 68, of, Lake Shore Road died Friday July 30th at his home. He was born June 8th 1942 in Wayne NJ the son of Peter and Betty (DeKnight) Hommes. Sheriff Hommes dedicated his entire life to public service at the National, State and County level. He spent 2 years as an MP in the United States Army. He became a New York State Trooper in 1966 and retired in 1987 as a member of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation. After retirement he worked as a Special Investigator for the Sheriff’s Office

Henry Hommes until serving 3 years as Undersheriff. In 1996 he was elected Essex County Sheriff, a position he held until his death. He was also active in several community organizations including Keeseville BPOE Elks Lodge, Essex, NY chapter of the American Legion and the Essex County Agricultural Society. In his spare time Henry was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed spending time at his home in the country with his friends and family. His most treasured time was spent as “Grampy” to his three grandchildren. He is survived by three children and their spouses, Son David Hommes and Daughter-in law Michelle of Lewis, NY; Daughter Dawn Salmon and Son-in-law Patrick of Atlanta, GA; Son Scott Hommes and Daughter-in- law Jessie of Willsboro, NY; three grandchildren, Olivia, Raegan, Bradie; two aunts, Grace DeKnight of Hawthorne, NJ, Harriet and Bob Watkins of Bath, PA; One broth-

er-in-law, Michael MacDougal of Essex, NY; a niece and husband, Heather and David Reynolds of Westport, NY, and a nephew and wife Andrew and Maghan MacDougal of Essex, NY. He was predeceased by his mother and father, Peter and Betty Hommes, one brother Roger, and an Uncle Clarence DeKnight. Calling hours were held Tuesday August 3rd from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at W.M.Marvin’s Sons funeral home in Elizabethtown. A funeral service was conducted by Rev. Fred Shaw Wednesday at noon at the Elizabethtown- Lewis Central School Auditorium. Burial will follow in Reber Cemetery in Reber NY. A reception followed at the Keeseville Elks Lodge. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Sgt. Eric P. Loiselle Scholarship Fund, PO Box 68, Lewis, NY 12950 or the FitzPatrick Cancer Center at CVPH Medical Center, Plattsburgh NY 12901. For online condolences please visit www.wmmarvins.com

Volunteers appreciated at Outreach Center To the News Enterprise: The attorney for the North Warren Emergency Squad says I am suspended. The letter from the squad says the membership voted to expel me as a member. The letter then states that the vote of expulsion is the beginning of the expulsion process. Is this not a little backward? You put your spin on things, take it to the membership for a vote of expulsion, then you tell the individuals involved what they were expelled for and that they can have a hearing. The hearing is only before a grievance committee, not the entire membership, and our side never gets to the membership. This is not a one-issue disagreement. The Perkineses and I have simply been asking for answers to concerns we have raised and we have either been ignored or told we have no need to know. To members of the community, this may appear to be all petty stuff, but I assure you it is about far more than what has been made public. It deals with accountability, equal treatment, honesty and integrity. Internal checks and balances should be ongoing for any organization in order to ensure that the level of service rendered never falters due to complacency or avoidance. What message does it send if an organization repeatedly responds with avoidance behavior to questions raised by members, town officials, doctors, etc.? They may expel me, but I will be able to hold my head high because I doggedly fought for what I believed to be right. Patricia Frasco Brant Lake

Time to vote down another Library Tax Proposition To the News Enterprise: Here we go again. On Aug.10, less than 100 days from having voted NO, and already we have to vote down another Library Tax Proposition. The liberal progressive democrats and republicans on the Long Lake Library Board as well as their supporters whine and cry like spoiled children that refuse to take no for an answer to their wants and desires. They really ought to “manup” and accept the decision made in May by the majority of voters in Long Lake. We do not want to support your pet project with tax dollars in this manner. I suppose if this proposition fails we’ll have to vote on yet another in a couple months. I am strongly reminded of the course of actions the Federal Government has been taking in passing new laws in opposition to the wishes of the majority of the U.S. citizen population. This is not surprising. Progressives have a way of not paying heed MY PUBLIC NOTICES to anything except their own tax and spend agenda.

Concerns continue over North Warren squad practices

To the News Enterprise: The Board of Directors and staff of the Outreach Center wish to acknowledge and thank the many volunteers who dedicate their time and resources to the food pantry. Their hard work really showed this past week. With our state’s budget still pending, other programs such as the Comlinks gleaning, have been temporarily suspended. We are proud that, here at the Outreach Center, we still had plenty of nutritious food for all who came to the pantry. This would not be possible without the incredible individuals who put in over 200 hours monthly raising funds, purchasing, stocking and traveling all over the region to obtain the food that is distributed to the neediest families in our community. When you encounter one of our pantry volunteers, please be sure to thank them for all they do.

Thanks also to John and David Alexander of the Alexander-Baker Funeral Home.

What’s changed, you might ask? Not much, really. The members of the library board are still not elected officials, therefore we remain without duly elected representatives that could be held accountable for tax money distribution in a fair and honest manner. I’m aware that NewYork State has determined this tax levy to be legal, but that does not make it constitutional, nor right. The current proposition calls for $90,000, a reduction of almost 22 percemt or $25,000. Is the board so ignorant as to think the reason for the first vote failure was the amount they wished to raise? This is a large reduction — did someone’s position get deleted? Do they not know how much money is actually required to operate the library? Or, has the Board been made aware that all funds raised thru this tax levy must be distributed in accordance with General Municipal Law of NYS? This, as you know, means the tax money cannot be used, among other reasons, to fund an endowment or similar type savings account. I do not understand why the Library Board refuses to publish a line item budget in order that each of us could see and possibly understand the expenditures. I might not be against this proposition if I knew where the money were going to be spent. No, that’s not true. Having been physically assaulted by a staunch supporter of this tax proposal while expressing my opinion against the tax prior to the first vote using my First Amendment Right to free speech, it has been my strong opinion that this particular Board of Directors, having not taken action against the perpetrator, does condone this type of action and does not support nor defend the Constitution of the United States and, therefore, does not deserve the opportunity to control any part of any public budget. In closing, I am not opposed to funding the library with tax dollars. I am opposed to stepping on the Constitution of the United States to accomplish the support. Vote no on Aug. 10. noon groups of 10 to 15 go out and volunteer their services from Warrensburg to Chestertown and North Creek. They have been seen working on Norma Rawson’s home in Wevertown, scraping and painting. On Wednesdays, they work at the Ski Bowl Garden, weeding, building paths, digging ditches and building a cobble stone surround for the new Ski Bowl Community

used to know a song called “I Have a Dream,” which talked about seeing the wonder in a fairytale. Walt Disney, the American Fairytale King, said, “A dream is a wish your heart makes.” He also advocated wishing on stars because, “everything your heart desires will come to you.” When I was a child I eagerly awaited the arrival of the first star in the evening sky, and I made my wish. Sometime between childhood and senescence I stopped believing in star power. The stars lost their magic and I lost my sense of wonderment. Perhaps I was disappointed too many times. I recently saw the opera Tosca. In the final act, the hero knows he’s about to die. He sings a beautiful aria, E Lucevan le Stelle — the stars shone brightly. As I listened to Puccini’s soaring melody, my thoughts were drawn to the beauty that is all around us, including the night sky. I wondered when it was that I stopped looking up. When it was that I gave up on making wishes. A wish, after all, is an opportunity to coalesce out thoughts. It is the first step in defining a goal or dream. No matter how old one is, having a dream is important. So I made a resolution to be more observant and appreciative of my surroundings, including the night sky. After Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy I will turn off the TV and go out of doors to look up at the stars. I may even make a wish.

building. These kids are from all over the USA, many from the south and mid-western states. Some traveled over 10 hours in a van to North Creek. I have had a great time getting to know these kids at the garden and so have Mary Goddard, Dorothy Swensen and Anita Abrams. We have found them to be very creative and some are focused and goal oriented.

They were appreciative and thanked us for letting them work in the garden. The garden volunteers will miss Youth Works. It has been lots of work but they are an incredible resource for the town. While in town, they helped cleanup cemeteries, weed and clean around the Tannery Pond Community Center and Town Buildings, helped at North Country Outreach, and many senior citizens have found they were a great help doing yard work and painting houses in the community. They have now returned to their homes to go back to school. We are grateful for all of their hard work. Thank you and God bless! Judy Brown

T

his is my final column in the News Enterprise on veterans from Johnsburg who fought in the Civil War. What began as just a way to further research these men for a presentation at the Tannery Pond Community Center a year from now soon took on a life of its own. I have enjoyed writing these weekly columns and hope the readers have enjoyed reading each since they first appeared Jan. 9. I am indebted to Lindsay Yandon for providing the space for these columns in the News Enterprise these past 29 weeks and to the late Lewis Waddell and Doris Patton who did much of the research on these men and our cemeteries; this column and this project would not have been possible without these three people. Thanks too to our present Town Historian Jo Ann Smith, who assisted me with the 1860 Town of Johnsburg census as a way of trying to determine which “locals” enlisted and who might have moved in to the town after the war. I have also been gratified by the many inquiries and comments on my column. Special thanks to Genevieve Davis, Ken Hopkins, David Allen, Fay Robinson, Ray Smith, Courtney Tucker, Gloria Perreault, Sharon Hammond, Sue Rawson and Richard Stewart. Some of the new information and leads that have come forward with my columns include: Michael McSweeney of Minerva brought to my attention John McGee, buried in the North River cemetery with a Civil War veterans marker. Although I find he is not included in the list of Civil War veterans buried in Johnsburg cemeteries, Mike believes John McGee emigrated from Ireland to Canada and then on to the United States before the war with a friend by the name of Rebtoy, along whom he is buried. Mike says John McGee had no children, but he is related to the Burns family. He was also a friend to the McSweeney family. Mike and his parents before him, have taken care of the grave since. We are still trying to discover what unit(s) John McGee may have served in the war. Russ Leigh was able to straighten up the headstone in Union Cemetery I thought might be for 16-year-old George B. Rogers. Turned out it was William Cross’s of the 175th NYVI. Rogers’s headstone, which was another one that had fallen in Union Cemetery, however, was also identified and righted. Russ has also led me on to a discovery of Eli Cleveland (Johnsburg born), who signed on with the 22nd NY in Albany. He has also brought to my attention a fellow by the name of Ingraham (first name unknown), who lived on the Thurman side of Garnet Lake Road who may have been with the 175th NY and had Johnsburg connections. Another Johnsburg-native Civil War veteran came to light and was added to our list was Levi Hill, Private in Co. I of the 96th NYVI promoted to sergeant during the war. I will be using all this information next year for following up on new leads and double-checking documentation for my Sept. 2011 presentation. In the interim, if anyone discovers additional information on any of the men who have been listed in my columns including pictures, diaries, letters, etc. – please give me a call at 251-300 or email me at pearsall.glenn @gmail.com. We finish our series with an unknown soldier. In the North River Cemetery, as one enters from the left (north) side, along the tree line, there is a GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) marker, but no headstone. Does anyone know anything about this grave site or clues as to the identity of this “unknown soldier”? Editors note: The News Enterprise is pleased to report the New York State Military Museum in Saratoga Springs has asked for a copy of each article in Glenn’s “Johnsburg Goes to War: 1861-1865” series for their archives so the research and history Glenn has shared may be available to others as well.

Essex County Jail until his case is presented to a grand jury. On Aug. 2, Investigator Scott Heggelke and Lieutenant Patrick Ryan of State Police Troop B in Ray Brook said police are searching for any signs of June’s remains. Roughly 15 troopers and investigators joined members of the Minerva Highway Department to begin work at the site Monday morning. “We have had outstanding assistance and are making progress,” said Heggelke. “We are hoping to establish the footprint of the house that once stood here and go from there.” Complicating the search, officials said, is the household waste, junk metal and other garbage littering the site. “The terrain we are working with is very difficult,” Ryan said. Crews removed truck loads of garbage this week before breaking ground Monday. They will then begin the long process of delicately screening dirt in search of 30-year-old evidence. “If this is indeed the site of the murder, we are very optimistic that we will find something,” said Heggelke. District Attorney Kristy Sprague said she is confident she will have a case and even a conviction without a body, but hopes the search is successful. “We will continue with grand jury proceedings with or without a body,” she said. “I hope for the family, however, we can get a body back to them for a proper burial.” Minerva officials said they are pleased to see this case approach the possibility of closure after 30 years. “It has been in the back of everyone’s minds since it happened,” said Highway Superintendent Bruce McGinn. “Minerva residents are all very curious about the investigation and hope to find some sort of answers.”

By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com INDIAN LAKE — Harrowed by some as the whitewater rafting capital of the state, the town of Indian Lake boasts a rich history around the nearly 30-year-old industry. Indian Lake has two official rafting companies that call the water of the Hudson Rive home, but despite guiding trips for the past several decades, rafting came to the region long before. The earliest authentic record of rafting on the northern waters of the Hudson river was made in 1768, but no names of the operators are available. Used for practical uses of transporting people and goods along the river ’s rapids by Native Americans and settlers of the Indian Lake area in the years to come, rafting took its time in becoming a recreational activity. Adirondac Rafting Company, owned by Robert Rafferty and Adventure Sports Rafting, owned by John and Wendy Starling, provide trips in all three seasons of spring, summer and fall along 16-17 miles of the Hudson River. • Housekeeping “These gorge Cottages trips are some of • Sandy Beach the greatest single-day raft• Boating ing trips in America,” said • Fishing Barry Hutchins, town supervisor. During their guided trips, Jean & Scott Langley rafts pass along the pristine natural surroundings of the Adirondack Mountains, but Route 30, Sabael Rd., also historical sites of the Indian Lake, N.Y. 12842 very first Native American

Benedict, an Abenaki Indian, was thought to have been born along the Penobscot River, in Maine and was looking to escape the fighting of the French and Indian War when he found himself the first person to stumble across what is now the town of Indian Lake. Local grad student asking for hunters to help with important bear management project

t has long been an accepted theory among wildlife biologists nuisance bear complaints rise during years when natural food sources are scarce. It stands to reason bears would be forced into campsites and residential areas in search of food during seasons in which berries and nuts are limited, and studies seem to support that premise. But can environmental officials accurately predict when these years will occur? Further, do bears have higher reproduction rates during years when natural forage is abundant? A graduate student of the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) aims to help answer those questions. As part of her graduate studies, Courtney LaMere has begun a project looking at the relationships between natural food abundance and human-bear conflict numbers and reproduction. She is doing so in tandem with state wildlife biologists at SUNY-ESF's Adirondack Ecological Center (AEC) at the Huntington Wildlife Forest in Newcomb. The goal, according to LaMere, is to “to put some empirical evidence behind it and give the DEC a predictive tool for dealing with ‘bad bear summers.’” “Another hypothesis I have is that sows synchronize their reproduction with the beechnut crop,” LaMere added. Because beechnuts are the number one nut crop in the Adirondacks and the largest source of high-energy carbo-

hydrates for the black bear, LaMere believes they play a critical role in both reproduction and nuisance complaints. This year, LaMere said, is Graduate student Courtney LaMere is askexpected to be a ing successful bear hunters this year to banner year for collect the reproductive tract from the anibeechnuts. mal’s entrails to be studied as part of reWhile LaMere search she is conducting to aid the state has studies conwith its wildlife management efforts. ducted by SUNY-ESF staff that focus on forest food abundance as well as harvest statistics and nuisance bear complaints from the DEC, there is little data tracking bear reproductive rates. So, LaMere is reaching out to hunters for their help. A number of collection points have been established, and LaMere is asking successful bear hunters to gather and submit the reproductive tract of female bears from their entrails. “I need to do a major outreach to hunters as I’m asking for something they would usually leave in the woods,” she said. According to LaMere, there are telltale signs left in a bear ’s reproductive tract after a sow has mated and given birth to cubs. The process of ovulation and birth leaves visible scars inside the ovaries and uterus. Cutting the tract open and studying the scars inside can shed tremendous light on the number of cubs produced, reproductive timing and reproductive success, LaMere said.

The findings will be used to not only help predict “bad bear summers,” but also help determine if female bears synchronize their reproduction with natural food cycles. Similar studies in other states such as West Virginia, Michigan and Maine have been done and the findings have become a useful tool in wildlife management. LaMere hopes the same occurs in New York. “Those of us studying environmental science and Forestry are in the unique position to help the DEC gather information they might not have the time or money to do,” she said. LaMere hopes to publish her findings as she finishes her masters work next summer. The findings will be posted to LaMere’s Web site: www.esf.edu/aec/research/bearproject. A detailed list of collection points and a guide on how to remove the reproductive tract from the body cavity can also be found on the site.
