Oakland and his handler Shannon Bressett return to public work at the Dog Days of Summer event at the Adirondack Museum over the weekend. Photo by Lindsay Yandon
By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE — Oakland, a seasoned search and rescue dog with Champlain Valley Search and Rescue K9 Unit out of Keeseville made an awaited public debut at the Adirondack Museum Aug. 7, after a serious injury he sustained last August. The 3-year-old German Shepherd, specializing in air scent tracking severed his Achilles tendon after sliding down a rock scramble during a training exercise. “We knew something wasn’t right the moment after it happened,” said Oakland’s handler and co-founder of Champlain Valley Search and Rescue’s K9 Unit Shannon Bressett. What was thought to be a routine Achilles tear was discovered by Oakland’s vets as a complete tendon tear. Initial treatment suggestions included freezing the tendon, which would have permanently retired Oakland. Despite the detrimental diagnosis, Bressett sought the advice of Dr. Paul Howard of Vermont Veterinary Surgical Center. After learning of a breakthrough surgery at a veterinary conference in Washington D.C., he began researching stem cell therapy to re-grow the injured tendon. Before Oakland, the procedure had been routinely used on injured racehorses. “When I heard his official diagnosis I was worried that Oakland would not pull through,” said Bressett. “But, he is a member of my family and I was not
going to give up on him that easily. We took a gamble on him and it was worth it.” Being the first canine to receive the surgery, a team of vets from across the country used fat tissue from Oakland’s stomach and a piece of his hamstring muscle to re-grow his Achilles tendon. He received his last surgery in October and is now approaching a full recovery and back to work. “Oakland is a work dog,” said Bressett, “and keeping him immobile during recovery was the hardest part, but we are so happy to see him back on his feet.” Under the supervision of his rehabilitation veterinarian, Trish Myatt,

Johnsburg beach closed by Department of Health By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com JOHNSBURG — Despite welcoming weather and warmer temperatures, the Johnsburg beach was barren this week after the Department of Health instructed the Johnsburg Town Board to shut the facility down Aug. 3 after failed water clarity tests were completed. Locals may have noticed the barricaded access road to the beach last Wednesday to prevent public access the beach, pavilion area and prohibit swimming in the water. “We felt that the clearest and safest way to deny access to the facility was to block the road completely to all public access,” said Sterling Goodspeed, Johnsburg town supervisor. Swimming and all recreational use of the town beach and surrounding grounds is prohibited until further attention from the Department of Health and Johnsburg Town Board. Public use of the restricted area could result in a $2,000 per incident fine from the Department of Health.
The facility was closed after public concern regarding the water safety resulted in Department of Health tests of the water clarity. The tests revealed a clarity disk could not be seen at a four foot depth as per Department of Health regulations. The Johnsburg beach revealed a clarity depth of roughly 2.5 to 3 feet. The Department of Health cited the new pipeline from the freshwater stream into the swimming water as ineffective in clearing the water. “What we have is nature trying to turn that body of water back into a pond,” said Goodspeed. The Johnsburg Town Board will now deliberate and seek public opinion on how to proceed. The beach and ground will remain closed indefinitely. “We are cooperating fully with the Department of Health and hope to work hard to keep the people of this town safe,” said Goodspeed.

Festival From page 1 for camper parking at 9 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 19. Music begins at 5 p.m. with three area bands kicking off the festivities. “We have increased our momentum this year and as the number of bands grows, so does the number of visitors,” said Burch. Co-chairmen, Rusty Leigh and Joel Beaudin have worked to develop a festival that is rich with tradition, not just in the music. This year’s festival will be dedicated to the memory of Mary Lou Cole. Cole was once the secretary of the UHRBF, a
founding committee member, member of the Board of Directors, and close friend. She passed away last November. Advanced tickets for the full four days are $45 per person if purchased before Aug. 15, or $50 at the gate. Tickets include camper parking, fresh water fill-up, and a septic pump out on Sunday, for a fee. Evening and Sunday tickets are $10, $20 for Friday, and $25 for Saturday. UHRBF is a nonprofit 501 (c) (3) organization and is dedicated to supporting local school and community organizations
with its profits. Their goal in hosting the community event is to be able to invest back into the community, according to Burch. “Anytime a successful event is hosted, it is good for the community,” he said. “Even if they never make it to downtown, they will be back.” Featured performers include the legendary Smokey Greene, who will be making his sixth appearance at the UHRBF. Greene has endeared himself to bluegrass and country music lovers for more than 50 years. Greene will join other big names like Fender as Ray Supply will be donating a Fender guitar for raffle at the festival. Nice catches at Raquette Lake Fishing Derby By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com
RAQUETTE LAKE — Anglers took to the waters of Raquette Lake during the last week in July for the 11th annual Raquette Lake Bass Fishing Derby. More than 45 two-person boats registered and participated in the event sponsored by the Raquette Lake Fish and Game Club. Lines were cast after a three day “no-fishing the waters of Raquette” rule was enforced by derby organizers. “Participants were very anxious to get their hooks in the water,” said Alexandra Verner Roalsvig, Long Lake recreation and tourism director. Fishing began at 6 a.m. with an eight hour time limit before weigh-ins began at 1 p.m. Participants returned to the shores of Raquette Lake with a lot to brag about after a day of fishing. First place winners were Troy Garver and Joe Tremblay of Saranac Lake, with a total weight of five fish at 15.36 pounds. Garver and Tremblay returned to claim their position as fishing champs after a win at the same tournament in 2002. Second place winners were Christian Bench and Marci Kunzmann of Annadale, NJ with a total weight of five fish at 13.46 pounds. Bench and Kunzmann set out to defend their win in 2009, but came up short. Third place was held by Sean Rice and Jim Baker of Inlet, with a total weight of 12.58 pounds. The Lunker (largest fish) prize went to Paul Williams and Steve Friot of Potsdam, at a total size of 20 inches and 4.43 pounds.

BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE — The grounds of the Adirondack Museum will be transformed to a lively 19th century tent city with an encampment of American Mountain Men interpreting the fur trade and a variety of survival skills Aug. 20 and 21. The group will interpret the lives and times of traditional mountain men with colorful demonstrations and displays of shooting, tomahawk and knife throwing, furs, fire starting and cooking, clothing of both eastern and western mountain styles, period firearms, and more. This year ’s encampment will include blacksmithing as well as a beaver skinning and fleshing demonstration. All of the American Mountain Men activities and demonstrations are included in the price of regular Adirondack Museum admission. There is no charge for museum members. The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Participants in the museum encampment are from the Brothers of the New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts segment of the national American Mountain Men organization. Participation in the encampment is by invitation only. “Mountain men are powerful symbols of America’s wild frontier,” said marketing director Susan Dineen. “Legends about the mountain man continue to fascinate because many of the tales are true — the life of the mountain man was rough, and despite an amazing ability to survive in the wilderness, it brought him face to face with death on a regular basis.” The American Mountain Men group was founded in 1968 and the association researches and studies the history, traditions, tools, and mode of living of the trappers, explorers, and traders known as the mountain men. Members continuously work for mastery of the primitive skills of both the original mountain men and Native Americans. The group prides itself on the accuracy and authenticity of its interpretation and shares the knowledge they have gained with all who are interested. NEWS ENTERPRISE - 5 ordinate the pre-race pasta dinner and Wendy Sargent and Candace Lomax did their best to sell you a winning raffle ticket. Larry Blackhurst served as the events announcer and Robin Jay deserves her own race medal as jack-of-all trades. A very special thank you goes to Tracy Watson who puts a smile on dozens of young runners’ faces as they compete in the final race of the day, the Family Fun Run. As always, the Town of Johnsburg highway department makes sure River Road is in excellent condition for the race entrants and the ambulance crew is prepared to assist any runner in need. And of course, there would not be a ‘Race the Train’ without our host, John Riegel and the staff of the Upper Hudson River Railroad. We are forever grateful for their cooperation. Many thanks to one and all! Please mark your calendar for the first Saturday in August and join us next year for our 10th anniversary.
Ninth Race the Train a success Reaction to Johnsburg beach closing To the News Enterprise: The health department closed the Johnsburg beach this week, now there is no swimming area in the town. Thanks to the short sighted attitude of the town board and those people who don’t care about a clean beach. The beach was closed due to poor water conditions and I can understand why, with a diaper on the beach, a feminine napkin in the water and dog feces all around. The board seemed more concerned about keeping the beach open than they were about the health of those using it. It is an insult to Dr. Grunblatt to have a beach named after him that is a danger to use. We all should appreciate the tax money the board spent on the useless pipeline to a beach we can’t use. This was after the money was wasted to prove it would not work. This is as bad as spending $10,000 on resurfacing the tennis courts to prevent the water from pooling. The courts hold the water better with no cracks to leak through, and now the plans for the park include moving the courts to a different location. The board wants to go forward to acquire the KellogWadell property, and fund it’s future upkeep based on a 1 year lease. When the lease is not renewed, the burden shifts to the taxpayer. If you look around the town it is easy to notice that we need to take care of what we have, not acquire more liabilities. I hope more people will attend the board meetings, write letters, and express their concerns about how our taxes are wasted in these rough economic times. Peter Heid

To the News Enterprise: Thank you! Hundreds of runners have “raced the train” to the station in North Creek for the past nine years, but that is because each one of those years countless community volunteers and dozens of local businesses have lent their valuable support to Dollars for Scholars’ Race the Train. This year was no exception — record number of runners representing 16 states and Canada ran under clear blue skies this past Saturday. Alex Benway of Queensbury led the pack with a winning time of 46:08, while Wendy Pavlus of Tupper Lake was the top female finisher at 55:03. Paul Allison not only placed first as top male runner in the local entries, but also was second overall in the day’s event with a time of 46:49. Suzanne Tomb took the medal for best female entry at 1:07:48. While the train did its best, 82 of the runners topped the train’s pace of 1:06:15! The local support for Race the Train is overwhelming – 77 businesses donated to this event including the following major sponsors: Alp Horn Motel, Barton Mines, Braley Noxon Hardware, Community Bank, Copperfield Inn Resort, Creative Stage Lighting, Friends Lake Inn, Garwood Boats, Martin, Harding & Mazzotti, National Grid, North Country Imports, North Creek Woodworking, Northeast Promotional Group, O.P. Frederick’s, Ski Bowl Village, Stewart’s Shops, T. C. Murphy Lumber Co., The Summit at Gore Mountain, Upstate Insurance, and Warren Tire Service Center. There was no way to avoid hearing or reading about Race the Train. Our sincere thanks go to Denpublications and News Enterprise, The Chronicle, and The Post Star for providing feature articles, photos, and ads. Regional Radio broadcasted ads on 95.5, 98.5 WCKM, and 1450 WWSC. Todd Moe of North Country Public Radio provided a segment encouraging runners to Race the Train. A very special thanks is extended to Lori Smith and her staff at Marsha’s Family Restaurant for putting on a delicious spaghetti dinner for runners or community members the night before the race to benefit Dollars for Scholars’new venture, Books for Tots. Bob Sherwood does a superb job of coordinating safety for the day’s event with assistance from the Warren County Sheriff ’s Department. Books for Tots kicks off To the News Enterprise: The Johnsburg Chapter of Dollars for Scholars is initiating a new program for all families in the Johnsburg Central School district, Books for Tots. As a nonprofit organization with the primary goal of fostering and rewarding scholarship, we hope to provide a gift of captivating, colorful new children’s books to every family in the Johnsburg school district who has a new baby. The books will be geared to children from the age of one to four years. National studies have shown that having a love for books before entering school is the single most important factor in fostering success in school. As Rebecca Constantino, a reading researcher from the University of California explains, “When kids own books, they get this sense, ‘I’m a reader.’ ” Lori Smith, owner of Marsha’s Family Restaurant in North Creek was instrumental in successfully kicking off our first fundraiser for Books for Tots by generously hosting a pasta dinner Aug. 6. Lori truly exemplifies community spirit. We wish to thank Lori, her staff, and all of the community members who came to enjoy a delicious spaghetti dinner. It is our hope that books bring joy to every young child and that area families can reap the rewards that come from sharing this pleasure. Anyone wishing to contribute to this worthy cause can contact Dollars for Scholars at 251-2602. Ann Arsenault Pres., Johnsburg Chapter – Dollars for Scholars

uly 2010 may not have set a record for temperatures but it certainly was notable for its many days of high heat and humidity. Just the thought of any work to do outside caused one to perspire profusely and consider retiring to a pool or swimming hole. It was the seventh month in a row with above normal temperatures. The average high temperature was 82.7 degrees and the average low was 59.6 degrees, giving us an average temperature of 71.2 degrees — 2.7 degrees above normal and the seventh warmest on record. The warmest Julys were in 1987 and 1988 when the average was 72.0 degrees and the coldest was in 1992
Theodor T. Bear, a local entry in the Raquette Lake Boat Parade meandered through the water in a kayak towed by a “honey bee.” The annual event was held July 31.
when the average was 65.1 degrees. There have been only eight Julys in the last 30 years when the average temperature has been above 70 degrees. Four of them have been since 2002. The highest temperature of 96 degrees, was recorded July 8 and the lowest of 46 degrees, was recorded July 31. There were four days above 90 degrees compared to an average of 2.6 days. Perhaps the most impressive statistic was the 19 days in a row when the temperature was above 80 degrees. This, plus the high humidity, made it a very uncomfortable month here in the North Country. Precipitation totalled 3.64 inches — 0.39 inches below the normal of 4.03 inches. This brings our seasonal total to 25.89 inches — 1.56 inches above normal. Measurable rain fell on only nine days with the greatest amount, 1.31 inches falling July 25. There were 24 degree days although almost no one would turn on any heat this month. The river reached its highest level of 4.98 feet on July 1 and its lowest level of 3.03 feet on July 28.

Commuting ... at a snail’s pace By John Gereau times_sentinel@denpubs.com
LAKE CHAMPLAIN — Micheala Martin sat in an endless line of rush hour traffic last week, nervously drumming her fingers on the steering wheel. The Crown Point ferry — her ride home — was nowhere in sight. “This is ridiculous,” she said after stepping out of her car to talk about her daily commute. “I am half an hour late picking up my little girl at day care.” Martin, who lives in Bristol and travels to and from work in Plattsburgh, said she routinely waits an hour or more to cross the lake where the Lake Champlain Bridge once stood. Summer traffic has compounded the holdup, she said. Work has begun to replace the bridge and a new crossing is expected to be open in about a year — but for commuters like Martin, that can’t come soon enough. “It is impossible to plan or stick to a work schedule,” she complained, leaning against her car. “One day you zip right across, the next you wait an hour and a half.” A few minutes later, the line moved a few hundred yards, transforming again to a parking lot for another 15 minutes as the two ferries crossed paths from one side to the other. Crown Point Supervisor Bethany Kosmider said she empathizes with motorists, and said she has fielded a number of calls from commuters upset at the wait in Crown Point and Chimney Point, Vt. “I know it is frustrating,” she said. “What I am hearing is that it wasn’t that bad until summer hit. Now the wait can be substantial, especially during rush hour.” Lake Champlain Transit (LCT) currently
operates two ferries at the site of the former bridge, but there are slips built to accommodate up to four. Kosmider said she plans to ask LCT officials about adding a third ferry — at least during peak traffic times like 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. “I’m not sure what the answer will be,” she admitted. “I don’t know about the feasibility of running another ferry in the canal. It is pretty congested now with two.” LCT Manager Margaret Murphy agreed that putting a third ferry in the rotation would only create gridlock. The company also does not have another ferry available at this time. “Three boats there would be on top of each other,” she said. “I think they would be forced to travel down or up the lake to stay out of the way of one another.” That scenario would also likely impact other boat traffic, she added. Murphy said the last two weeks in July and first two in August are traditionally the busiest time of year for the ferry service. She anticipates the problem to lessen in the fall. “It will die down in September,” she said. “In the meantime, we work as efficiently as we can.” The ferry service between Crown Point and Chimney Point, Vt. is a 24-hour service. There is no charge at the crossing, as the service is subsidized by the two states. While Martin said she appreciates not having to pay to cross, she said she is forced to at times when trying to make a tight schedule. “It certainly is easier to stick to a schedule when I cross in Charlotte,” she said. “But, at $18 for a round trip, it gets expensive.” “I wouldn’t be able to do it every day,” she added.
Pictured above is the reflection in a sideview mirror of a line of cars waiting to board the the Lake Champlain ferry that transports motorists between Crown Point, NY and Chimney Point, Vt.

The Stony Creek Band is continuing to play at various venues thoughout the county this summer with their stellar lineup. The veteran band performs a mix of country, blues, bluegrass and light rock, a blend the band identifies as “American roots music.” The band is undertaking its annual round of area town concerts, beginning with a performance in the Lake Luzerne town park Thursday, Aug. 19, at 7 p.m. and Aug. 30 in Thurman. The band, shown in their recent historic return performance at the legendary Caffe Lena, consists of (front, left to right): Hank Soto and John Strong on guitars, Dave Maswick on bass, Fred Lanz on mandolin, and (rear): Mike Lomaestro on drums. In their performance May 8 in Caffe Lena, the group rocked the sold-out house with their music they’ve composed over the last several decades. Photo by Thom Randall

LG Dinner Theatre has a hit with ‘Our Son’s Wedding’ By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com LAKE GEORGE — The Lake George Dinner Theatre has established a reputation as a showcase for feel-good drama, clever mysteries and light comedy. This year, it may have taken its offerings to a new level with a cohesive combination of seasoned cast, a smart script and tight direction in “Our Son’s Wedding.” The Theatre’s production for 2010 follows a couple — a plumber from the Bronx and his strong-willed wife — preparing to attend the nuptials of their son — to another man. Veteran actor Paul D’Amato, famous as the character “Dr. Hook” in the hit movie Slapshot, plays Angelo Lo Presto, a plumber with traditional values who’s wrestling with the concept of his son’s homosexuality and its consequences. His wife Mary Lo Presto, is portrayed by Marina Re, who’s equally accomplished as an actress. While early on, Angelo obsesses over the wedding plans sparking arguments with Mary over one aspect or another of the nuptials. Through the play, the emotional tension builds as they examine their own relationships with their son, explore aspects of their own bond, and the nature of their expectations for others. Angelo’s bullish side recedes, and his latent sensibilities emerge as he faces his own vulnerability, through a process in which details emerge about his own marriage to Mary. The result is that through exploring the contemporary

subject of conflicting attitudes toward gay marriage, the play presents a compelling venue for the audience to look at both comedic and poignant universal aspects of human nature. And Our Son’s Wedding takes its audience through this emotion-charged territory very successfully, without lapsing into easy or condescending stereotypes. Kudos also go to Theatre owner Terry Rabine, who produced and directed the show, for keeping the dialogue and stage action electric yet natural. The acting is as superb as D’Amato’s and Re’s credentials promise, and their onstage banter is particularly spirited and spontaneous — perhaps because they’re partners in real life. The script is loaded with comic quips that couples relate intimately to — the lively comments about the characters amongst diners during the intermission at nearby tables, and their shared laughter, provided proof of it. The Lake George Dinner Theatre’s food has always been good — the theatre is located in the recently upgraded Lake George Holiday Inn Resort — and this year is no exception. Reputed to be the smallest professional dinner theater in the nation with 145 seats, it provides an intimate atmosphere where the audience experiences emotion viscerally, and actors feed off the energy and response of the audience. This is particularly true with Our Son’s Wedding, which offers a stimulating and enjoyable evening, and continues a recent tradition with Terry Rabine and his dinner theater, of exploring new dramatic territory. Performances are offered Wednesday through Saturday

The Dog Days of Summer Back to camp
H
ot, humid weather continues to cast a warm blanket over the region. The heat has been accompanied by several violent thunderstorms that have left a path of destruction in their wake. While the passing storms have provided spectacular evening entertainment with fantastic displays of chain lightning, the heavy rains have raised rivers and streams to spring levels. The lakes and ponds are full again and the fish are active. Rivers with steep gradients such as the Ausable and the Boquet have flushed quickly, while the slower moving waterways such as the Saranac, Hudson and the Raquette, will run high for a while. With the advent of these severe weather patterns, outdoor travelers should remain vigilant of the possibility for lightning strikes. Whether biking, hiking or on the water for any purpose, danger is omnipresent at this time of year. Get off the mountaintops, lakes, streams or rocks at the first hint of thunder and there will always be another day to enjoy.

Outdoor enthusiasts will find a new tool to help plan trips in the Forest Preserve at DEC's Mapping Gateway. The website provides information that allows the public to use Google Earth and other mapping tools to find trails and learn more about the state lands that surround them. DEC's Mapping Gateway combines existing web mapping applications and map collections with new offerings, such as a full-featured, interactive data inventory and map viewer. DEC continues to expand the availability of "Virtual Globe" data at http://www.dec.ny.gov/pubs/42978.html that provide a variety of interactive aerial map representations using virtual globe software such as Google Earth. The Mapping Gateway also offers an extensive series of depth charts that are a valuable tool for anglers. Many local waters are featured, including several backwoods ponds. Additional new features offer information on boating, bird watching, hunting and accessibility to other state lands. Instructions are available on the DEC website for those needing information about how to download and use the Google Earth software.

A guide's eye view of two happy campers on the go heading up the Bog River Flow.
“We now no longer camp as for a night, but have settled down on earth and forgotten heaven” — Henry David Thoreau I’ve spent most of the past week in camp, traveling through a series of lakes, rivers and ponds, where I discovered there is still a little bit of that forgotten heaven. My days have been full of paddling, fishing, hiking and swimming, while my evenings were spent around the campfire, telling tales, sharing laughs and shivering to ghost stories. Camp is a place where we can forgive and forget the inhibitions of regular life. It is a place where we can relax and be free to shed the normal constraints of everyday society. It is a special place where we can let our guard down, be ourselves and return to our roots. We retreat to camp to escape. Time slows down, noises become less apparent and our senses are enlivened. Life is less annoying and we are calmed. Stresses of regular life are removed as the days begin with a rising sun and depart with the arrival of heavy eyelids. In camp, a watch becomes an intrusion that’s better suited for town than for the country. An old friend and mentor once offered the finest description of camp that I have ever heard, explaining, “Camp is a place where you can spit, cuss, fart and scratch your butt in public…and nobody cares. When yer ’ in camp, it just don’t matter no more!” It’s been great fun to share these adventures with children and to again experience the pleasures of regular camp life through a younger set of eyes. Any kid that can get away with any of the actions mentioned above, without admonishment, is bound to be in for a good time! Kids are captivated by the simple chores of collecting firewood, starting a fire or cooking s’mores. Add in a salamander hunt, a frog safari, a bit of fishing and an evening of watching the night sky and you’ve got a recipe for some tired and happy kids. Falling asleep while a west wind
blows, the loons wail and a coyote howls is simply a bonus to the day’s adventures. I have slept with my back to the earth for six out of the last seven days, and I found the experience to be very good for the soul. It is an incredibly intimate experience to sleep in an open camp, with the wind blowing through the trees, the stars sparkling in the night sky and the gentle lap of waves along the shore. In a word, I was “grounded” again and I am better adjusted to life for the experience. Over the past week, I have camped and fished through the Saranac Lakes, the St. Regis Lakes, the Bog River, Lows Lake and Hitchens Pond. I found the Saranacs rather quiet and the St. Regis also somewhat slow. However, the vast Bog River Wilderness was packed with travelers seeking solitude, which appeared to be in very limited supply. Regardless of the human traffic, the fishing has been excellent for bass due to a series of passing low-pressure systems. During these ‘Dog Days of Summer,’ a favorite activity is to pursue bass with a flyrod, in the early hours of the evening. Bumblebee pattern poppers have proven quite effective of late, especially when nothing else seems to work. When the waters grow flat and still, spin fishermen will find similar results with surface lures such as Little Torpedos or Hula-poppers. Fishing, swimming and camping are some of the finest ‘kid friendly’ activities available and the current conditions are possibly the most conducive of the season. Taking a kid outdoors, whether for the day or a couple of nights is one of the least expensive methods of fostering an appreciation of the environment and cementing family bonds. Surveys regularly reveal that a ‘camping trip’ is commonly reported as the most indelible memory of our youth.
