Election 2009

Sprague, Hommes win GOP nomination By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — The two candidates endorsed by the Essex County Republican Committee both claimed victories in a tightly contested Sept. 15 primary election, winning the right to run on the Republican Party line this November. Incumbent Sheriff Henry Hommes defeated Micheas “Ike” Tyler with 52 percent of the vote, 2119 to 1927 while Clinton County Assistant District Attorney Kristy Sprague defeated incumbent Essex County District Attorney Julie Garcia with 53 percent of the vote, 2312 to 2044. Both Tyler and Garcia plan to remain in the race, taking part in the Nov. 3 general election, Tyler as an Independent and Garcia on the Democratic line.

DA race Once the unofficial results were posted Tuesday night, Sprague said she wasn’t surprised the race was so close. Ultimately, it was her experience that proved the difference in attracting more voters, she

said. “That’s what I hope people will take into account in the general election,” she said. “I think people will recognize that experience and how what I’ve done

B alloon Festival returns to A dks By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com QUEENSBURY — The 37th annual Adirondack Balloon Festival will return to Floyd Bennett Memorial Airport in Queensbury on Thursday Sept. 24 and events will run all weekend. The event, normally held the third weekend in September, has been pushed back a week to the end of the month because of the lateness of this year's Labor Day holiday weekend. The action will start at 5 p.m. with opening ceremonies at Crandall Park, including live music by the Stony Creek Band. Immediately following the ceremonies will be the premiere balloon launch, including about 12 - 15 balloons. Each of the festival's five other flights at the airport will take place on Friday evening, Saturday morning and afternoon, and Sunday morning and afternoon. Numerous activities will accompany the launches on Saturday and Sunday including a Balloon Art Show, concessions to benefit local charitable groups, military aircraft on display, kite sales and flying, a rock climbing wall for kids and both Protestant and Catholic worship services Sunday morning. The festival has added an additional flight of 15-20 balloons on Sunday afternoon

with the possible opportunity for spectators to take a ride in one of these balloons. New balloons to the festival are Wally the Clown Fish based in Wausau, Wisconsin and Piko, a huge smiling face from St. Jean, Quebec. Wally will be making his first-ever trip to the East Coast. The giant orange-andwhite clown fish stands 90 feet high and is 110 feet long. He weighs in at a hefty 950 pounds. He is the only balloon in the world that includes movable fins operated by the pilot. “This system makes Wally

appear to be swimming while being flown in the sky,” said pilot Steve Woller. An estimated 100,000 visitors will attend the four day, six flight event. All activities are free of charge and held weather permitting. Balloons will not launch in rain or strong wind. “Safety is number one,” said Walter Grishkot, the festival's founder and organizer. The balloon festival will not host a Moonglow in Lake George this year because of safety concerns, according to Grishkot. Wally and Piko are among a

half-dozen guests coming to the festival this year which has upwards of 90 balloons. As always, people are urged to bring cameras and take part in the official Adirondack Balloon Festival photo contest. The Adirondack Balloon festival is the largest and oldest balloon event of its kind on the East Coast. Pilots come to upstate New York from all over the U.S., Canada and Japan for the event. For for information on the Adirondack Balloon Festival, visit www.adirondackballoonfest.org.

Local businesses sponsor HHHN fundraiser $115,000 raised By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com

NORTH CREEK — On Sunday, Sept. 13 Jimbo’s Club at Point O’Pines in Brant Lake was host to the Hudson Headwaters Health Network (HHHN) as they raised funds for the network foundation with their fourth annual dinner. “We called it ‘Roast and Toast’ and we roasted and toasted to John Rugge,” said Howard Nelson, head of the foundation. Not only did Sunday’s event raise money to benefit Hudson Headwaters, it was held in honor of and celebrated

the CEO and Founder of HHHN, John Rugge, MD. This year marks the 35th anniversary of Rugge’s Adirondack medical practice. The HHHN is a non-profit corporation that serves the local residents of the Adirondacks by providing them with healthcare. “It is different than any other medical group in the region,” said Dan Way, MD and participating doctor. Roughly $115,000 was raised and donated to the HHHN foundation. The foundation is a branch of HHHN that exists to help with fund-raising efforts, which are essential in providing the network with what it needs and to advance its mission. That mission is to provide care for everyone in the community regardless of financial or insurance status.

Several local businesses sponsored the event including Creative Stage Lighting, Barton Mines, Brant Lake Camp, Point O’Pines, Glens Falls National Bank and The Sagamore. The “Roast and Toast” would certainly not have been such a success without the help of such sponsor, Way said. “It is the genius of Dr. Rugge that has allowed HHHN to exist, expand, provide good jobs and quality medical care for 35 years in the southeastern Adirondacks,” said Way. Rugge created the vision for the HHHN and still upholds its values as a participating doctor in the network. The event was a success as more than 300 people attended, according to Nelson.

Jane Feldblum NYS Licensed Massage Therapist Harris and Ginger Dunlap standing amidst some of the color displayed in their gardens. By Laura Cormack denpubs@denpubs.com JOHNSBURG — Whenever I ask for advice from other gardeners on whose garden I should cover next, the Dunlaps always come up. When I pulled into their driveway at the end of W. Hitchcock Road in Bakers Mills, it became obvious why their talents were so renowned. Harris and Ginger are people with energy and creativity, and these traits shine through in their garden, which is organized into a mélange of various plots winding throughout their expansive yard. “We play with the color, shape and composition of things in our garden,” said Ginger, perhaps not a surprising approach considering her 33 year career as an art teacher at Johnsburg Central School. “When you look over the garden horizon, you want to see something that brings you joy. It's the garden as a whole and the feng shui of it.” At one time, the whole area that is now their impressive garden was all used to house sled dogs. While Harris also has a background in art, having studied art in Europe and holding a masters degree in fine art, he and Ginger bred and trained sled dogs for 21 years. Today, the kennels are gone and the center piece of the garden is undoubtedly the stream that runs through it, pooling into a pond that is traversable via a footbridge. I crouched with Harris at the mouth of the stream as he ladled up a cup full of the delicious artesian spring water for me to sample. He hiked half-way up Eleventh Mountain to the spring that tapped and piped several hundred feet down to his property to feed his little stream. Peppermint and Spearmint covered the ground near the stream-mouth, and several little paths wound away from the water to plots of double bloom lily varieties and coneflowers, blood red dahlias and flamingo-pink gladiolas. Trellises placed here and there harbored morning glory and clematis. One out-of-the-way nook showed off a particularly bright splash of late-summer color, with mounds of black-eyed susans springing from a dense mat of creeping jenny, a ground cover that complemented the yolk-yellow susans with a lighter chartreuse. Behind this plot was a small barn covered in Virginia creeper vine that was beginning to turn shades of vermillion and auburn, a sure sign of pending autumn. Harris showed me bunches of garlic and onions hanging within the barn, and referred to their root cellar where most of the storage took place. “We store everything in our root cellar; Lincoln pears, plums, berries…” he commented. The Dunlaps have their own cider press, and making apple cider from their own apples is a yearly routine. Growing prolifically over a canopied walkway are also grape vines, covered with luscious looking bunches of green grapes.

There is even a kiwi fruit plant in the back yard. I mustn't leave out the vegetable garden that grows in the back of the yard that stands out prettily with its shades of pale green and deep purple framed by the orange and yellow marigold flowers. Marigolds contain a natural insecticide, but Ginger was not sure how well they really work. Harris assured me that there is much more to see of his gardens earlier in the season, and it's true that as fall encroaches in the Adirondacks, many flowers have seen their peak, and vegetable gardens are offering up the last of their harvests. “This spot was solid daffodils in the spring; all different types. Those gave way to lilies. There are a bunch of transitions in a garden,” noted Harris. Everything the Dunlaps grow is started from scratch in a grow room; they don't buy anything that has been started. Ginger buys seeds from Wild Seed Farms, out of Texas. She can buy a large quantity of seeds for about $5.00; the seeds last her forever and she can use them year after year to plant annuals like nasturtium and alyssum. Like the rest of us, the Dunlaps have to battle with the short growing season of the region, and the uncertainty that anything will perform as expected. “A major problem is that there are microclimates everywhere in this area.” said Harris. “This becomes a very important thing when you have a colder climate. You look at the differences between Glens Falls, Thurman, North Creek and North River, and each one has a different microclimate.” The Dunlaps learned some tricks to expand the growing season, such as using walls of water, plastic tubes that are put around plants allowing the grower to put them in earlier and protect from frost. They also built walls of Styrofoam packed with sawdust around plants such as roses and rhododendrons to help them settle in. As seasoned gardeners who have been through the challenges of growing in Bakers Mills, the Dunlaps suggest starting small, and warn against letting any one aspect become overwhelming. “Get over the idea of having anything exotic.” advised Ginger. “Anything that's basically indigenous in the first place works well.” Gardening just seems to make sense for the Dunlaps. They explained that most of the things that they and their now grown children have eaten over the years have either come from their own garden, or have been gathered, hunted, caught, or obtained from otherwise natural sources. They have truly strived to be self-sustaining. Proof was in the gracious helpings of home-made apple cider, Copper River Red Salmon fresh caught in Alaska, hand cut sweet potato fries, and sautéed yellow squash that Ginger served me as I sat at their kitchen table. “From a health standpoint, everything from working it, eating it, the tremendous exercise of it; it's therapeutic all the way around.” added Harris about his growings.

A celebration of culture, learning, and the dissemination of knowledge, Smithsonian's Museum Day reflects the spirit of the magazine, and emulates the free-admission policy of the Smithsonian Institution's Washington, DC-based institutions. The Museum has been participating in Museum Day for three years and the event draws a wide range of visitors to the Adirondacks, according to Katherine Moore, ADK Museum marketing assistant. Doors will be open free of charge to Smithsonian readers and visitors at museums and cultural institutions nationwide. To obtain free admission visitors must present the Museum Day Admission Card to gain free entry to participating institutions. Visit www.Smithsonian.com/museumday to download your Museum Day Admission Card, or find it in the September 2009 issue of Smithsonian. Each card provides museum access for two people, and one admission card is permitted per household. Listings and links to participating museums and sponsors can also be found on the Smithsonian website.

Last year, upwards of 200,000 people attended Museum Day across the country, with all 50 states plus Puerto Rico represented by over 900 participating museums, including 84 Smithsonian affiliate museums. This year, the magazine expects to attract over 1,000 museums.

Lady Lions shutout Orange By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com LEWIS — It took two extra periods, but the Elizabethtown-Lewis girls started their season off right with a victory over Indian Lake/Long Lake Sept. 9. Freshman midfielder Emily Morris notched the goahead goal at 6:41 in the second overtime, the game’s only goal in a highly defensive contest. Rebecca Pellerin was in the box when she found Morris trailing behind. Morris then hooked one from beyond 18 that sailed just inside the left goalpost. Indian Lake/Long Lake nearly tied minutes later with a direct kick from 20 yards out Morris’s goal was the last of just five shots on goal the Lions mustered through the match. The Orange

finished with 11, but ELCS goalkeeper Chelsea Provost had 11 saves for the shutout. “I knew our chances were going to be limited,” said Lions coach Steve Denton, “but we capitalized when we had to.” Denton said his team played very well, even though for many of them it was their first varsity experience. “This is a good confidence builder for them,” he added. Kylie Cassavaugh and Claire Harwood, both freshmen, led a strong defensive showing by Elizabethtown. “They did an awesome job,” said Denton, “and I think that’s what saved us.”

Area teams begin the fall season on a winning note By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com As school commenced, varsity athletic teams charged into their first week of play on Aug. 8. Local team fared well in the first week of play and promised exciting season ahead. Re-caps of the first week of games are as follows:

Boys Soccer Johnsburg 8 - Warrensburg 0 Sean O'Neill netted four goals before halftime to push Johnsburg toward a commanding victory over Warrensburg in their non-league matchup on Sept. 8. Kevin Connor finished with two goals and four assists for the Jaguars, while Nick Porter and Alec McKee also scored. Dylan Wolfe completed the shutout with eight saves in the goal, several of which where big stops near the end of the game. Johnsburg 5 - Minerva/Newcomb 2 Tatsuki Mryacto put the Mountaineers within a goal of the Jaguars at 13:59 of the second half of their Sept. 10 contest. Sean O’Neill quickly replied with a goal less than a minute

later. Tim Fabin also tallied for Mountaineers. O'Neill totalled three goals and Nick Porter added two to power the Jaguars to their win. The Jaguars maintained an edge in shots at 21-16, while Dylan Wolfe made 12 saves in the net for the win. Indian Lake/Long Lake 2 - Hadley/Luzerne 1 Kris Bain helped Indian Lake/Long Lake to its first victory of the season on Sept. 11 by delivering on a corner kick in non-league play against Hadley/Luzerne. Hadley-Luzerne’s Cecil Hayes tied the game with a shot from the top of 18, but was quickly answered by Colin Farrell, who capitalized on a loose ball in front of the net with 15 minutes left in regulation time.

Girls Soccer Indian Lake/Long Lake 2 - Wells 1 Freshman Morgan King netted the winning goal with 45 seconds remaining in the Sept. 11 game to push Indian Lake/Long Lake past Wells. After a slow start to their season, the Orange outshot Wells 21-8. "We've had a lot of offense opportunities and have been

getting real good chances," Orange coach Dave Olbert said. "We've just had a lot of trouble finishing." Merrill Pine netted the team's first goal early, but was answered by Wells' Samantha Bartholf, who tied it at 1-1 in the second half.

Field Hockey Johnsburg 5 - Salem 1 Kelly Blackhurst and Emily Burns each scored two goals as Johnsburg defeated Salem in a non-league contest on Sept. 8. The Jaguars dominated the goal and led from start to finish, scoring three goals in the second half. Johnsburg 3 -North Warren 0 Keri Cleveland scored near the end of the first half and started the Lady jags off on their second victory of the season on Sept. 11. Kelly Blackhurst and Kelsey Williford secured the shutout with two more goals in the second half, which were assisted by Sam Burns and Emily Burns respectively. North Warren made it easy for Johnsburg goalie Cassandra Prouty, not getting a single shot off.

Galusha, Aldous near perfect after one Tom’s Week 2 Picks: By Tom Henecker It seems I’m having a little trouble out of the gate this season. First, let me thank our awesome layout grunt and mediocre NFL picker, Josh Leipzig, for catching the fact that I left off the San Diego/Oakland pick from my column, and fixing that for me. Unfortunately, while he was making a poor attempt at a joke by giving me Oakland by 61 points, he failed to notice I messed up a couple other picks, like, for instance, having Pittsburgh playing Jacksonville. I guess you just can’t catch them all. I did make my proper picks known before kick-off, so my 12-4 record is legit. Still, it’s perennial pickers Matt Aldous and Troy Galusha who led the way in Week 1 with near-perfect 15-1 picking. While last Thursday’s Pittsburgh/Tennessee game was a great way to start the first week, Monday night’s Bills debacle was a doozie. I will say they looked better than I expected, but, jeeze, how sad was that? Meanwhile, The New York Football Giants got it done. They’ll have a big test Sunday night in Jerry World, but they’ll have Romo running for his life all night long. Good thing he’ll have a wonderful view of the Jerry-Tron while lying on his back. The Jets also looked good in their opener, and I see them starting 2-0 with a huge win over the visiting Patsies this week. I’m going to take Buffalo at home over Tampa Bay, but I think that’s a sympathy pick. As always, should you see a mistake in the standings, be sure to let me know and I’ll get it straight the next week. Remember, this is all about fun! I noticed a few annual pickers missing, so if you didn’t pick last week but still want to get in, we’ll credit you with the lowest rank of Week 1 to keep you in the contest. Finally, thanks to Dan Alexander Jr., our Denpubs.com guru, you now can make your picks online at our Web site. Just go to www.denpubs.com, click Extra! Extra! From the menu, and select Contests. It’s just that simple! Let’s see if I can get this right this time…GO BIG BLUE!!!

90-miler paddles through Long Lake

By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com

LONG LAKE — More than 250 boats and 500 paddlers took to the water Sept. 11 for the 27th annual Adirondack Canoe Classic 90-Miler. The three-day race included 14 classes of competition and drew participants, volunteers and spectators alike from all over the northeast as well as abroad. This year attracted 58 boats from inside the Adirondack Park, but also drew paddlers from as far away as New Zealand. The 90-Miler launched from Old Forge Pond and was completed Sept. 13 on Lake Flower in Saranac Lake. Paddlers traversed the Fulton Chain, the Eckford Chain, Long Lake, the Raquette River, and the Saranac Lakes. The course intentionally follows some of the “original highways of the Adirondacks” once traveled by Native Americans, guides, and early settlers.

Day one consisted of paddles and carries through the Fulton Chain of Lakes, Raquette Lake, the Marion River and the Eckford Chain of Lakes. Paddlers bedded down in Blue Mountain Lake and launched early on day two from Bissell’s on Long Lake. Day two was a paddle down Long Lake and into the Raquette River, a carry around Raquette Falls, a paddle down the Raquette River to a finish at the state boat launch on Routes 3 & 30 outside Tupper Lake. Day three started at Fish Creek Campground and included a paddle down Upper Saranac Lake, carry to Middle Saranac Lake, paddle across Middle Saranac Lake and into the Saranac River, carrying around the Upper State Locks. Paddlers continued on the last stretch of Lower Saranac Lake and another section of the Saranac River, carrying around the Lower State Locks. The homestretch was across Oseetah Lake and Lake Flower to finish the race at Prescott Park in the village of Saranac Lake.

Renowned deer expert Charles Alsheimer is predicting that the Adirondack deer breeding season will be early this year.

The magic 10 days A

ccording to one of the country’s most renowned authorities on deer behavior, whitetails will be looking for love a little earlier this fall.

Voyageur canoes set the pace of the race. The Richard Reynolds Express, powered by seven paddlers from Rochester including captain Marc Gillespie, finished the trip from Old Forge to Saranac Lake in 12 hours, 14 minutes and 41 seconds to the take the fastest overall time of the weekend. Two other voyageur canoes finished second and third. Dog Breath, captained by Roger Henry of Rexford, finished in 12:33:04. Dale and the Destroyers, led by Dale Krapf of West Chester, Penn, took third in 12:48:11. The fastest local finishers were Jon Santor and Chad Kennedy of Plattsburgh and Bloomingdale, who took first in the C-2 Amateur class with a time of 13:15:24 and fifth overall. The second fastest local boat was a team consisting of Tom Boothe, Mike Rechlin and Jack Burke of Paul Smiths along with Saranac Lake resident George Cook. The team finished second in the C-4 Stock men’s class with a time of 13:56:23 and 11th overall. This year marked an important milestone for the role of the state Department of Environmental Conservation in the 90-Miler. The DEC became involved in 1985 when they featured the Adirondack Canoe Classic as an Adirondack Park Forest Preserve centennial event. DEC employees Terry Healy and Bill White initiated the relationship between the 90-Miler and the DEC. “Bill White was the quiet behind the scenes organizer, and Terry was the ‘Hey guys, this is gonna be a lot of fun’ motivator we were looking for to coordinate the onthe-water aspects of the growing event,” said long-time Adirondack Canoe Classic organizer and race director Brian McDonnell.

Healy died in 1993, but is remembered each year through the Terry Healy Award, given to a participant, support team, volunteer or staff member who best exemplifies the true spirit of the event. The safety of the race had been tremendously improved over the 25 years of DEC involvement. It is now operated under the Incident Command System (ICS) with guidance from DEC Forest Rangers. Also, DEC Environmental Conservation Officers, state Office of Public Protection Dispatchers and Natural Resource and Operations staff operate safety boat patrols, radio communication, campsite facilities and monitor all 90 miles of the event. “The knowledge and skills of the DEC personnel has proved invaluable in the continuing success of the 90-Miler,” McDonnell said. The 90-Miler is organized and sponsored by the Adirondack Watershed Alliance. Other sponsors include Wenonah Canoes, the Central Adirondack Association, Byrne Dairy, Grand Union, Adirondack Bank, Forge Racing, Long Lake Recreation, Placid Boatworks, Lake Placid Pub and Brewery, Campmor, Adirondack Lakes and Trails, NYMCRA, Franklin County Tourism, Little Beaver Guideboats, GRB, Hyde Fuel, The Old Forge Camping Resort and MAC’S Canoe Livery. More than 100 volunteers also help to shuttle boats, keep time and provide pit stops for paddlers. Amateur Ham radio operators led by Saranac Lake resident Roland Patnode also provide invaluable assistance. This year, Region 5 Director Betsy Lowe presented the Terry Healy Award. In honor of the 25th year of DEC involvement, the Terry Healy Award went to all communication, safety and medical vol-

Charles Alsheimer, who is in the 13th year of a 15-year study with Vermont Department of Wildlife Commissioner Wayne Laroche, is predicting the rut to reach peak activity about 10 days earlier than last year. Alsheimer puts that time frame between Nov. 4-13 this season, based on when the “rutting moon” is full. Last season, he pegged the height of the rut at between Nov. 15-24. A long-time field editor of Deer & Deer Hunting magazine with more than 50 years of experience studying and photographing whitetail behavior, Alsheimer is considered a leading authority on the whitetail deer. His research both with Laroche and on his own deer farm in upstate New York has shaped the debate over the moon’s impact on when deer breed. The science, according to Alsheimer, is rather straightforward. A doe’s estrus clock is reset each fall first by the specific amount of daylight and then by moonlight, which provides a light stimulus to the pineal gland. That moonlight comes with the second full moon following the autumn equinox which this year is Sept. 22. That moon, known as the rutting moon, occurs this year on Nov. 2. Last year, it was on Nov. 13. The dramatic decrease of lunar brightness following the full moon — known as the moon’s third quarter — is what triggers hormonal production by the pineal gland, leading to ovulation and estrus. Long story short — the second full moon after the autumnal equinox is the mechanism that triggers the rut. Alzheimer then breaks the rut down into three phases:

unteers. Those who received the award included members of the DEC, led by Mike Grove and Phil Johnstone; The Adirondack Amateur Radio Association, led by Roland and Jackie Patnode who provided radio communications to race officials; and the Search and Rescue of the Northern Adirondacks (SARNAK) that provided first aid along the route. The 90-Miler began in 1983 by a group of Saranac Lake residents looking for an event that would celebrate the historical mode of transportation in the region: human-powered boats. The original organizer, Sue Dyer, was looking for “something physically challenging, naturally gorgeous and positively memorable after the pain went away.” For the past three years the members of The New York Marathon Canoe Racing Association have voted the 90 – Miler its race of the year.

Boat Regatta set in Long Lake LONG LAKE — The Regatta takes place Saturday, Sept. 26 at 10 a.m. This race features the North American War Canoe Championships, a 15-mile race on Long Lake. Other events include the 10- mile Adirondack Kayak Championships, a 15 Mile C-4 marathon, and 10- mile canoe, guideboat and “Anything goes” races for youth and adults. All races begin and end at the beach across from the Adirondack Hotel.

seeking, chasing and breeding. During the seeking phase, bucks are more active during daylight as they look for groups of does and possibly catch one in estrus. It will begin this year two to three days before the Nov. 2 full moon. The chasing phase is aptly named because bucks are doing just that — chasing every doe they encounter. Alsheimer says this phase should be quite noticeable by Nov. 6 and hit its peak around Nov. 11. The final phase, known as the breeding phase, is marked by less deer activity and less all-out chasing. That’s because deer activity during the rut is dictated by the doe, which typically move very little at this time. This phase will occur between Nov. 8-22. So, how does all this factor into when you should schedule your hunting vacation? Alsheimer answered that question in the September issue of Deer & Deer Hunting. “For those who only have one week of vacation to hunt, you’ll be happy to know there’s a sweet spot in the rut, a magic week to 10 days when deer activity is greatest,” Alsheimer said. It is a time when buck activity will be at its peak, with deer rubbing, scraping, fighting, cruising their territory and chasing every doe they see. In 2009, that magic 10 days will be Nov. 4-13, Alzheimer said. Next week, I’ll discuss how certain techniques and calls can help spell success during the three phases of the Adirondack rut. John Gereau is managing editor of Denton Publications and an avid outdoorsman. On a side note - am I the only one who finds it peculiar that Vermont’s DEC Commissioner is a wildlife biologist and life-long hunter and ours is a career politician from Manhattan who got the job as a political kick-back? By MIke Corey denpubs@denpubs.com MINERVA — Donnelly Beach on Minerva Lake was the place to be Sunday, Sept. 13. It was a spot where one could relax, listen to great tunes, converse with plenty of neighbors, and enjoy top notch food, all the while soaking in that Minerva Lake ambiance.

Organized by Planet Minerva, this Harvest Barbecue event succeeded in getting Minerva folks together to talk about the town and how such a good place to live could be made even better. The event began at 12:30 p.m. with the sounds of the Tony Jenkins Jazz Trip, which was set up near the concession stand on one of the fine Minerva Lake swim floats (on solid ground).

This was the time when a small plane was to do a fly-over complete with camera for an aerial shot of the people gathering at the beach. The plane didn’t make it because of unfortunate windy weather conditions, but the undaunted crowd thoroughly enjoyed their time there. At 1 p.m., “Don’t Quit Your Day Job” band began to play at the pavilion, where a display of

From hot dogs to grilled corn, from barbecue pulled pork to Cajun clam chowder and apple crisp, the dishes were great and the service was excellent. Planet Minerva would like to thank John Alexander and Woody Widlund for organizing the airplane fly-over – sometimes it’s difficult to predict the weather, after all. Also, thanks to the Minerva Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, who brought a fire truck and its ambulance to the park. Thanks to all the folks who dished out and sold the fine foods and beverages that were offered up. But, a special thanks goes to the folks who came out to support Planet Minerva’s efforts and to show how interested they are in Minerva’s present and future as a sustainable community.

In Indian Lake, incumbent Barry Hutchins won the supervisor race with 147 votes over challenger William Murphy, who won 106 votes. Indian Lake superintendent of highways was won by James Roblee over Brian Wells. Roblee had 136 votes, while Wells had 114. in the neighboring county can be done here.” Sprague said she expects another victory in November, especially since she has secured the Republican, Conservative, and Independent party lines. Still, she’s not planning on slowing down her efforts. “I plan on hitting every town in Essex County going door to door,” said Sprague. “Now is the time we need to get behind each other, and I look forward to November 3.” Garcia said she was sur-

prised by the small voter turnout. When she ran in 2005, more than 6,000 people turned out for the primary, compared to around 4,400 this year. “I’m hoping that people stayed home because they are satisfied with the job we are doing,” Garcia said. “We have bipartisan support and a few weeks to straighten out the misrepresentations being made by my opponent’s campaign.” Garcia said she doesn’t plan to change her campaign strategy. “I’m running on my record,” she said.

Sheriff race In the supervisor’s chambers following the balloting, Hommes said his chances in the general election should be favorable, despite the close result in the primary. “Obviously, Mr. Tyler worked very hard,” he said. “I know there’s been a lot of strife and turmoil within the party, and hopefully we can overcome that.” Hommes agreed that the contentious district attorney race may have played a role in the sheriff primary. “It’s very possible,” he said. “I think if you ride around the county, you’ll see a lot of Garcia and Tyler signs together and Sprague and Hommes signs together.” Tyler said he feels confident

moving on to the general election, given the number of voters who supported him in the primary. “I’m motivated,” Tyler said. “To only lose by 190 votes I think is fantastic against a 12year incumbent with Republican Party backing.” Tyler said he plans to continue door-to-door campaigning until the general election in November, talking to the voters of Essex County about the experience he can bring to the position of County Sheriff. “I’ve knocked on the door of over 1,500 houses, and Essex County is the second largest county in the state. If I haven’t spoken to someone, it wasn’t by lack of trying.” Essex County Republican

Committee chair Ronald Jackson said all four candidates in both races worked very hard, and that the voter turnout was encouraging. “As a Sprague and Hommes supporter, I’m obviously very pleased,” he said, and predicted further success for both candidates in the general election. “I think there’s enough Republicans who will stay with Julie to make it a close race in November,” said Jackson, stressing that Sprague is still more likely to win. Results are unofficial as there were still absentee ballots to be counted at the time of this report. The Essex County Board of Elections reported 363 absentee ballots sent out and 252 returned before deadline.
