Olmstedville author Carol Gregson was busy April 20 making her famous stroganoff, a dish she tells readers about in her latest memoir, “Wet Socks,” which will be officially released at an event at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 2 at the Crandall Public Library in Glens Falls. The event will also feature former Olmstedville resident Dan Berggren, a singer/songwriter who will be releasing his newest CD, “Tongues in Trees,” at the event. Gregson’s first book was “Leaky Boots.” In “Wet Socks,” she refers to her children by numbers. She had dinner Saturday with #1 daughter and #3 son. Stories about Gregson’s new book and Berrgren’s new CD will appear in the May 4 issue of the News Enterprise.
By Andy Flynn andy@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK Ñ With the Adirondack whitewater rafting season gaining momentum and the 56th Annual Hudson River Whitewater Derby on tap for May 4-5, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo may soon be making a long-awaited announcement about the Adirondack Challenge. And it looks as though the governor is

considering the town of Indian Lake as the headquarters for the Challenge, according to a tentative schedule acquired by the News Enterprise. Cuomo proposed the Adirondack Challenge, a national whitewater competition, on Jan. 9 during his annual State of the State address. However, since the speech, no details have been made publicly available, even though state employees have been meeting with local town and tourism officials and whitewater outfitters as late

as last week. It had been anticipated by officials in North Creek and Indian Lake that the governor may choose to hold his marquee event on or near the Hudson River. The idea came from a multiple-day rafting trip he and some friends took on the Indian and Hudson rivers in September 2012 with guides at Beaver Brook Outfitters, based in Wevertown.

LAKE PLACID Ñ Ten community theaters have joined together in an effort to prevent their extinction. The Adirondack North Country Association and local theaters are hosting a kickoff event for the Ò Go Digital or Go DarkÓ fundraising campaign Friday, April 26, from 5 to 6:15 p.m. at the Palace Theatre in the village of Lake Placid. Joining the Palace Theatre in the campaign are The Hollywood Theatre in Au Sable Forks; the Indian
Lake Theater; Ogdensburg Cinema; a trio of Strand TheatreÕ s (Old Forge, Schroon Lake and Plattsburgh); The Glen Drive In of Queensbury; Cinematheque in South Glens Falls and the State Theatre in Tupper Lake. The event is free with no RSVP needed. Ò Our small-town theaters are vital to keeping rural downtowns dynamic,Ó ANCA Executive Director Kate Fish said. Ò The campaign is a unique collaboration between 10 North Country theaters working together with the Adirondack North Country Association, the Adirondack Film Society and the state of New York to engage people from across the region to ensure that these theaters remain a special part of our
small town quality of life.Ó Small local movie theaters have been seeking funding streams ever since they received word that they would have to change their theaters to all-digital equipment soon or no longer be able to show movies as the industry moves toward all-digital distribution. Ò It affects all the small movie theaters in all our small towns like Schroon Lake, Au Sable Forks, Queensbury and Lake Placid,Ó Jay Supervisor and Essex County Board of Supervisors Chairman Randy Douglas said in July. Local musician to join Rolling Roots Revue at Tannery Pond By Andy Flynn
andy@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK Ñ The Tannery Pond Community Center will present a performance by Wepecket IslandÕ s Rolling Roots Revue at 8 p.m. Friday, May 3. The Revue will feature Adirondack native Alex Smith, of Long Lake, who will join four other musicians Ñ Don Barry, Sherman Lee Dillon, Maria Fairchild and Ò RagtimeÓ Jack Radcliffe Ñ playing blues guitar, fiddle tunes, old-time songs, banjos and dulcimers. A lex Smith grew up in Long Lake. The son of a boatbuilder/writer/banjo player and a historian, Smith was immersed in folk tradition from a young age. Around the house, Pete Seeger and Bob Dylan were constantly present on the airwaves. Smith began writing and playing traditional folk songs at the age of 12 or 13, and has not stopped since. The community Smith grew up in is steeped in tradition, and also offers plenty of material for contemporary songs. The work of Adirondack folk legends Dan Berggren, Chris Shaw, and Peggy Lynn were extremely influential, as was Canadian artist Stan Rogers. It is the work of Rogers that Smith considers to be his greatest influence. His idea of promoting a sense of pride in the traditions of oneÕ s culture, while at the same time speaking about the issues presented

ALBANY Ñ Gov. Andrew Cuomo Tuesday, April 23 announced that New York state closed on 9,300 acres of the former Finch Pruyn lands in the Adirondacks. The acquisition of these properties was announced in August 2012 by the governor. The land parcels purchased from the Nature Conservancy include: the OK Slip Falls tract in Hamilton County; the Casey Brook tract in Essex County; the Spruce Point tract in Washington County; the Saddles tract in Washington County; the Hudson Riverside/Ice Meadow Tract in Warren County; and the Indian River tract in Essex and Hamilton counties. “There is not a more fitting way to celebrate Earth Week than protecting spectacular property in the Adirondack Park that will create tourism opportunities and bring more visitors to this magnificent place,” Cuomo said. “With these newest acquisitions, we are building upon past state investments in the Adirondacks as we enhance a world-class Park that contains a wealth of private and public lands in one of the most beautiful settings on earth.Ó As part of this effort, the Nature Conservancy also granted $500,000 to the state to support community connections and economic development linked to the former Finch lands in Newcomb, Minerva, North Hudson, Indian Lake, Long Lake and other towns. Ò Thanks to the leadership of Governor Andrew Cuomo and Commissioner Joe Martens, New York state is strengthening its remarkable conservation legacy with these additions to the Adirondack Park,Ó said Bill Ulfelder, executive director of the Nature Conservancy in New York. Ò Keeping the forests, rivers, streams and lakes of the region protected is not only good for tourism, recreation and wildlife, but also helps keep New YorkÕ s water clean and reduces the risk of floods during extreme weather events like Hurricanes Irene and Sandy.Ó In 2007, the Nature Conservancy purchased the entire 161,000acre property from Finch Pruyn. The Nature Conservancy sold 90,000 acres to a private company for timber management. The state acquired conservation easements on these lands in 2010 to ensure the lands would be protected and maintained for sustainable, working forests in communities across the North Country. The Nature Conservancy managed a 69,000-acre landholding with the intent to ensure its protection. Under an agreement announced last summer by Gov. Cuomo, the 69,000-acre property will be sold to the state pursuant to a phased five-year contract which began in 2012. Once complete, the acquisition of the former Finch lands will be the largest addition to the State Forest Preserve in 118 years. This acquisition complements the stateÕ s purchase of the 18,318-acre Essex Chain of Lakes property in late 2012. The state will pay The Nature Conservancy $6.3 million for a total of approximately 9,300 acres and will pay full property taxes on the land. DEC and APA are working together to plan for the future classification of the former Finch lands. DEC has completed a Proposal for Public Access and State Land Classification for the entire 69,000-acre property, based upon input from Adirondack local governments and other stakeholders, and submitted it to the Adirondack Park Agency and to Park stakeholder groups. The APA will release a draft land classification plan for the parcel later this year. A public comment period will begin once the draft plan is released and public hearings will be held before the final recommendations are sent to the Governor for approval. Once land classifications are approved, DEC will develop Unit Management Plans that will guide long-term public and administrative use of the properties. An open and transparent process, including a public comment period, will be held for each Unit Management Plan. Currently, the APA and DEC are working on an interim public access plan to provide early access to the Hudson and Cedar Rivers through the Essex Chain of Lakes and Indian River Tracts. This interim public access plan is expected to be released in the next few weeks with public motor vehicle access to begin in late May or early June depending on road conditions. Ò The acquisition of these tracts will increase hiking opportunities and provide direct access to the Upper Hudson River from the Newcomb Town Beach,Ó said Newcomb Town Supervisor George Canon. Ò Attracting more visitors to the interior should increase economic opportunities for Adirondack communities.Ó Town of Indian Lake Supervisor Brian Wells said, Ò The stateÕ s acquisition of the OK Slip Falls and Indian River parcels represents a new mind set coming out of Albany. The governor has proposed these land acquisitions as not only an environmental necessity but also an economic necessity for the state. DEC is charged with reaching a balanced approached in their recommendations of classification to the APA. DEC has reached out to the local communities to ask input to be put forward to the APA. If these classifications are done with local input from the communities who are going to be affected the most, it could lead to a resurrection in the park.Ó The tracts to be acquired during the next several weeks
III/ IV rapids of the Gorge. This will be an incredible draw for visitors seeking this unique and limited wild rivers experience, bringing people to the communities of Indian Lake, Blue Mountain Lake, Long Lake, Newcomb and Minerva to seek accommodations and supplies. This aspect of the project will be open to public use this year as discussed above. Up-to-date details on public access will be provided on DECÕ s website at: www.dec.ny.gov. OK Slip Falls, Town of Indian Lake, Hamilton County: One of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Adirondack Park, OK Slip is part of a 2,800-acre property that will soon be made available to the public for hiking and other outdoor pursuits. The tract contains 2.1 miles of the Hudson River, the Blue Ledges, the Hudson River Gorge, as well as Carter, Blue Ledge and Pug Hole ponds. This property also contains one of the most exciting sections of a popular whitewater route that draws more than 25,000 adventurers who annually pass through this property. This tract is believed to harbor more rare and significant plants, mosses and liverworts than any other site in the Adirondack Park. It is also the only place in New York State where purple mountain saxifrage, hair-like sedge, wild chives and other rarities are known to exist. Adirondack soils are typically acidic due to the geological makeup of the predominate bedrock. In this area, the bedrock is streaked with mineral-rich Grenville marble. One-billion-yearold marble outcrops in places like the Blue Ledges and OK Slip Falls have created growing conditions favorable for unique assemblages of plants to thrive. Blue Ledges is all marble, and because it faces northwest and remains wet through the summer it has functioned as a refuge Ñ a small, detached piece of arctic mountain Ñ and allowed a relic community of northern plants to persist. More than one-third of the 96 mosses that grow at Blue Ledge are uncommon or rare. Likewise, about one-third of the 69 mosses and liverworts at OK Slip Falls are also uncommon or rare. At OK Slip ravine, BraunÕ s holly fern and Pennsylvania buttercup are among the uncommon or rare vascular plants found. Casey Brook, Town of North Hudson, Essex County: The 1,587-acre Casey Brook tract is strategically situated south of the High Peaks area of the Adirondack Park to the west of the Elk Lake Preserve. It provides a direct hiking connection to Mount Marcy and other High Peaks, as well as public hunting and camping opportunities. It adjoins the Boreas Ponds Tract, part of the former Finch lands that will be acquired later by the state. Hudson Riverside/Ice Meadow Tract, Town of Chester, Warren County: This 727-acre parcel is an ecologically significant piece along 1.5 miles of the Hudson River, which links to a previously acquired Forest Preserve parcel. DEC will work with the Town of Chester to develop a trail system that avoids impacts to fragile plant life and private properties.

The need for gaming in Life in a dangerous world the Adirondacks is large W I
n 1990, Colorado held a statewide referendum to legalize limited stakes gambling in three struggling mining towns that were on the verge of ceasing to exist. The towns of Black Hawk, Central City and Cripple Creek played a huge role in the boomtown gold rush of the mid-1800s, but when the gold ran dry these once bustling communities became ghost towns. Faced with a dwindling population, deteriorating infrastructure and disintegrating architecture, officials in the towns banded together to lobby for gaming in their commercial districts, and the idea was put before Colorado voters. The measure passed overwhelmingly, and investors began renovating historic structures for use as casinos. Beginning with opening day on October 1, 1991, gaming proved spectacularly successful in attracting new investment in amounts unheard of since the gold boom more than a century before. Today, the same argument of dwindling population and deteriorating infrastructure could be made for many Adirondack towns. Data released in 2009 by the Adirondack Park Regional Assessment Project (APRAP) clearly demonstrate that. Student enrollment in our schools is evaporating, leading to fewer opportunities for our kids and our year-round population is aging. Dilapidated empty storefronts line our Main Streets. Towns like Newcomb, Port Henry and Tupper Lake that once thrived from logging and mining now seem to be headed the way of Black Hawk, Central City and Cripple Creek. Casino gambling would without a doubt stop that trend, just as it did in Colorado, and would be a badly needed source of revenue for the state, hopefully leading to less reliance on things like the local property tax. In Colorado, gaming pumps more than $100 million into the stateÕ s economy each year. That money is used for everything from roads and transportation to infrastructure improvements to tourism promotion to historic preservation. ColoradoÕ s gaming industry also provides more than 27,000 direct and indirect jobs to its citizens and offers above-average wages Ñ
something as scarce in the Adirondacks as a 4-year-old car without rust. In addition, casino employees in Colorado receive competitive fringe benefits like tuition reimbursement, transportation and meals, retirement and pension plans, health and life insurance, and exceptional promotional opportunities. In other words, the very benefits our college graduates are leaving the area in search of. Certainly the argument can be made that casinos would forever alter the quality of life that makes the Adirondacks the special place it is. But through progressive planning Ñ like forcing casinos into commercial districts, limiting stakes and establishing set closing times Ñ casino gambling could be as good a fit here as it proved to be in Black Hawk, Central City and Cripple Creek. The casino building proposal in New York is expected to come to a head later this year when Gov. Andrew Cuomo divulges up to seven potential casino locations. The state legislature has already passed a constitutional amendment approving the new casinos. It must be passed again this year and then, like Colorado, must be approved in a statewide voter referendum before becoming law. Anticipating approval some towns, like Port Henry, North Hudson and Lake George, have already tossed their hats in the ring for consideration to become host to one of the new casinos. Potential locations such as Frontier Town, located at Exit 29 of the Northway in North Hudson; Roaring Brook Ranch off Exit 21 of the Northway in Lake George and the former LoweÕ s Home Improvement Center in downtown Ticonderoga have emerged. When it comes down to decision-making time, letÕ s hope the governor bases his decision on need rather than greed. If so — and there is no conflict with existing Native American casinos Ñ than no other region of the state would benefit more from a gaming operation than the Adirondacks. Ñ

hile the snow is melting and we anxiously await the departure of the mud and blackflies, a group of dedicated volunteers and staff are hard at work planning various activities and events for the Indian Lake Sabael and Blue Mountain Lake. We all know the signs of the impending season Ñ The OlÕ Station opens up, the garden clubs are busy sprucing up planters and the town parks, the lifeguard chairs appear on our beaches, busses filled with rafters are frequent sights in town and on the river and out-of-state license plates begin to outnumber those New York plates starting with HA. These are sure signs our summer season has arrived Ñ just a few months to showcase our fabulous locale and its offerings. The Indian Lake Chamber of Commerce and town have been busy planning new

pring is slow coming this year, but as a result we recently had on our carport/roof/feeder a huge flock of redpolls, the sparrow-like birds which Òi rruptÓ every other year or so from the far north. They have a red top knot (hard to see in poor light) and the males have a pink breast. WeÕ ve never had as many migrating juncos, which everyone knows because of the white-sided tails that flash when they fly. As of April 21 a number of them are still coming in every day. If you look with binoculars at the beak you will see that it is clearly pink! And even without binos you can tell the dark grey, almost black ones, the males, from the females which are lighter grey/brown. On that nasty day of Òw inter mixÓ a couple weeks ago it was amusing to watch the juncos skating on the invisible ice covering the sloping tin roof. There was a great flapping of wings and spreading of tails as they tried to keep their balance, but they managed to keep feeding, not seeming to get irritated as most of us would have. When the sleet got thick the redpolls did a two-foot hop back to scrape down to the seed. A song sparrow, that very hardy, early singer, took advantage of the seeds that day too. A brilliant-white-morph white-throated sparrow has been visiting too, unusual for us. Today a tan-morph fed at the same time, the stripes on the head being buff instead of white. Both have a beautifully white bib. These two are probably a pair as they breed here in the spring, but the very odd thing about these two versions of the species is that it is not a case of the male having the brilliant white stripes, the female being duller. (The stripes, that is.) Both genders can be either morph, but they always choose the opposite form for their mate. How do they know which one they are so they know to choose the other morph?? I don’t think this puzzle

October brings the chilly weather and Adirondack MuseumÕ s Fall Fest (Oct. 5) followed by a haunting good time with the Halloween Fun Parade & Festival (Oct. 31). Snow typically appears in November getting all of us ready for the holiday season starting with Election Day Dinner (Nov. 5); Country Christmas Tour (Nov. 29-30); and Bazaar & Bake Sale (Nov. 23). has been solved. Another puzzle this winter was a brown and white mystery feeding under a friends feeder. After much page turning of the Sibley book with its excellent plumage variations, the answer was a solitary, lonely snow bunting male starting to change to its summer colors. I hope it found its friends before heading for Baffin Island where I once saw a pair nesting in a cliff. The rest of the birds this winter, except for a brief visit by a CooperÕ s hawk that dashed across the roof scaring the birds up, have been the usual chickadees, the two nuthatches, and two woodpeckers, with their friend the brown creeper which is always with them, creeping up the trees and flying back down to the bases, and for the first time ever I have seen a golden-crowned kinglet, the midget of the winter birds, also hanging out in the background with the chickadee crowd while they are feeding. A treat also has been regular visits by two titmouses/mice/whatever. Another advantage of a slow spring is there is more time to notice and enjoy the emeralds of the forestÑm osses and liverworts. They are every shade of green, many sizes, textures, and growth habits, growing on rock, dead logs and stumps, live trees, dirtÑan d every species, hundreds of them, have a name. In the past many did not have common names but a new field guide called Common Mosses of the Northeast and Appalachians has invented a name for every one, so now the Latin-challenged can use a name, often a descriptive one. An excellent Òk eyÓ helps the beginner figure them out. I love the natural world; but thanks to a modern technology I am going to try to lead nature rambles in this area in a stochastic (unpredictable) way. If you phone me once (251-3772) to talk about your physical ability limitations and preferred days and give me your email address, when the weather looks good and the time is right for me, I will email everyone giving the day, location, and time to meet, and other details such as whether the focus will be birds, flowers or other natural features of interest. Our breeding birds are on their way so if you want to learn or at least hear some of the trickier ones, let me know right away!

COMMUNITY NEWS Alexandra Harris named Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts managing director
BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE Ñ Alexandria Harris, of Long Lake, has been named managing director for the Adirondack Lakes Center For The Arts. Her responsibilities include membership, fund raising, grants and managing the Arts Center office and staff. Harris graduated with a bachelorÕ s degree in history in 2011 from St. Lawrence University and completed her masterÕ s degree in curriculum and instruction a year later at SUNY Potsdam. She has served as the Arts Center’s Office Manager for over a year, giving her the experience required to absorb the daily ins and outs. The Arts Center Board was unanimous in the hiring decision. Members agree she is a warm and sociable addition, as well as being extremely enthusiastic about the arts and the Arts Center. Her enthusiasm stems from her understanding of what goes on behind the scenes as well. Harris danced at St. Lawrence, and she worked extensively in the St. Lawrence TheatreÕ s costume shop. ÒT he best way to understand things is from the inside,Ó Harris said of her experience. When asked of her goals, Harris didnÕ t hesitate. ÒT hereÕ s no better jumping off point for education and advocacy than the Arts,Ó Harris said. ÒM y mom instilled in me that you have to care greatly about what you do for a living. Which makes this much more than just a job.Ó Harris assumed her new responsibilities on April 15.

Andrew F. Jones was a local businessman who was a major source of employment in the Town of Horicon from the early 1900’s through the 1950’s. His businesses included dairy farming and milk delivery, strawberry gardens and was well known for his Maple Sugar Bush. In 1932 he tapped over 2,600 maple trees and the going rate for a gallon of maple syrup was a staggering $2.00!

April 18 @ Minerva The Mountaineers tallied 10 hits to defeat the Jaguars 17-6 in their first game of the season at home. Austin Williams and Alex Ruzbacki each had triples, and Tyler Clickner had a double. The team headed into the bottom of the fifth inning down 5-4 but drove in 11 runs to pull ahead. The Jaguars never recovered. Williams earned the win and pitched a complete game, giving up six hits. Minerva-Newcomb had two errors. Johnsburg’s Kyle LaBounty hit a three-run home run and pitched a complete game despite the loss. Ethan Cooper and Nick Prouty each had a double. The Jaguars had six errors.
One of Andrew Jones lasting legacies has to be his masonry work. The house at the intersection of Palisades Road and Route 8 is a fine example. After adding an addition and stonework to an existing house, Jones and his wife owned and operated what became known as Stonehurst Hotel. In the mid 1940’s, Stonehurst was renamed Three Maples by George Culver, the new owner. Today locals and visitors know it as Stoneleigh. Another fine example of his masonry work is the Stone Barn located at the head of Brant Lake.
Andrew Jones was a key figure and supported his community throughout his life. (1883 - 1958) For more information visit:

Town Board denies supervisor’s county sales tax request
News Enterprise - 9
Town of Minerva dealing with vandalism newsenterprise@denpubs.com MINERVA Ñ During the Thursday, April 18 Minerva Town Board meeting, Supervisor Sue Montgomery Corey discussed several recent instances of vandalism that the town has experienced. Corey has been proactive in filing detailed reports with the New York State Police. The first incident occurred a month ago when some person or persons attempted to use a trash can to have a fire on the beach. Several holes were punched into it, and garbage was scattered across the beach. Two weeks ago, the concession stand was broken into and damaged. The back window was smashed out, and several cartons of home fries and other items were stolen. In addition, a bucket of water was found inside. It was possibly used to allow the perpetrators to use the toilet while they were in the concession stand. In addition, a corner of the change house was spray painted orange, and a campfire was built next to the beehive drain at the junction of the parking lot and the beach area. The wood used for the campfire may have been stolen from the Highway Department. The most recent incident occurred this past Saturday. Someone

blew doughnuts in the grass adjacent to the little league field in Brannon Park. The large ruts that were carved into the ground will need to be fixed. Corey said the State Police have been helpful. Patrols of the beach, park areas, and other targeted areas may be increased. If anyone has information about any these incidents, they are encouraged to contact the supervisor at 251-2869. In other news at the meeting, Corey made a motion to adopt a resolution, which was not seconded, to authorize Minerva to request that its share of the sales tax collected by Essex County be returned to the town. Councilman Dave LaBar asked for more information about the county warrants that the sales tax monies are currently used to buy down. “These sales tax dollars represent flexible revenue that may make the difference between meeting our 2 percent tax cap or having to go through the process and expense of adopt-
ing a local law to override it,Ó Corey said. In discussing the sales tax question with her colleagues on the Essex County Board of Supervisors, she discovered that in every case where towns were able to meet their 2 percent tax cap, they had used sales tax money to do it. Minerva is one of only three towns in the county that have continually chosen not to make use of the sales tax money available from Essex County. Ò In an era of the 2 percent tax cap, every dollar of revenue matters,Ó Corey emphasized. The projected sales tax revenue that would be available to Minerva if the Town Board had chosen to adopt the resolution is $54,416.85. Corey said the town has been fiscally responsible and frugal in managing its finances over the years. Ò I think that anything we can do to have more control and flexibility is a good thing. We have managed to continue our services for the community, and I want to ensure that we are able to continue to do so in the future,Ó Corey added. The next Minerva Town Board Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 2.

Whitewater Derby, Adventure Festival set for May 4-5 Skiing gives way to river rafting By Andy Flynn
andy@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK Ñ With a relatively normal spring Ð meaning cold Ð two of the Gore Mountain RegionÕ s major outdoor seasons overlapped this year Ñ downhill skiing and whitewater rafting. Ski season ended on Sunday, April 21 at the Gore Mountain ski center Ñ Ski Day No. 140. That was later than 2012, when the season ended abruptly on March 22 due to unseasonably warm weather. This year, however, visitors could literally ski and go rafting on the same day. But with ski season now over, itÕ s time to celebrate spring with the 56th Annual Hudson River Whitewater Derby and 4th Annual Adirondack Adventure Festival in the town of Johnsburg. New this year for the Whitewater Derby is the Not-So-WildDownriver Race, which starts at Fishing & Canoe Access, 2.5 miles west of North Creek on Route 28 (where the railroad tracks cross the highway) following the Slalom Races (about 2 p.m.). It will finish at Riverfront Park. Ò The committee wanted to put something together new that would encourage new boaters, people who have recently gotten into canoeing and kayaking and are interested in racing bit really donÕ t want whitewater,Ó said Whitewater Derby organizer Kate Nightingale. Ò This is just a nice, short race about two and a half miles long of moving water.Ó Nightingale suggested that this is a good race for Scout groups, college outing groups, and Adirondack Mountain Club paddling clubs. Ò The other thought was try to get some of the old-time racers who havenÕ t been here in a long time, still canoe, but have no interest in running the slalom or SundayÕ s race but might want to, just for the fun of it, participate in it,Ó Nightingale said. The race fees are $20 for Slalom & Downriver, $15 for Novice

Slalom, $10 for an additional Slalom race $10, and $10 for the new race. The Hudson River Whitewater Derby, the nationally known canoe competition originated in North Creek in 1958 by the Johnsburg Fish and Game Club, started as a one-day eight-mile downriver race. There were 25 craft on the river representing 44 entrants. Also, Johnsburg Town Supervisor Ron Vanselow said there is limited camping at the Ski Bowl Park the weekend of May 3-5. Call the town for more information at 251-2421. The Adirondack Adventure Festival Ñ Friday-Sunday, May 3-5 Ñ is a weekend full of outdoor fun, entertainment, and family adventures around the Gore Mountain region. This family-oriented event was created to increase the number of people visiting North Creek for the Whitewater Derby and offer other non-sports activities for paddlersÕ families while they are in town. Ò Every year we try to switch it up a little to keep it fresh,Ó said Lisa Salamon, executive director of the Gore Mountain Region Chamber of Commerce.
Two of the new programs are the Cairn Building Demonstrations on Saturday with Minerva resident Jake Hitchcock and the KidsÕ Fishing Tournament on Sunday at the Ski Bowl Pond, site of the old town beach. Ò We just lost the ice a couple of days ago, so weÕ re able to do a kids’ fishing tournament, so we’re very excited about that,” Salamon said. Ò WeÕ ll provide bait for them unless they want to bring their own. They’ll be able to fish for an hour, and at the end of the hours, weÕ ll weigh, measure and give awards.Ó The Warren County Fish Hatchery will be stocking the Ski Bowl Pond with 250 rainbow trout over the next week, and people are asked not to fish there until the Kids’ Fishing Tournament is over. It will be held only for one hour, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday, May 5. Awards will be given out at 1 p.m.

Adirondack Challenge from page 1
In order to take the Hudson River trip, groups embark on the Indian River and take it to the Hudson River, then travel through the Hudson River Gorge and end at North River. Along the way, rafters pass by land that will soon be acquired by the state of New York from the Nature Conservancy as part of the Finch, Pruyn land deal — a 940-acre parcel at the confluence of the Indian and Hudson rivers and the 2,800-acre OK Slip Falls Tract. The governor announced April 23 that these tracts would be purchased within the next several weeks. Ò The most exciting and popular whitewater rafting experience in the Adirondacks starts on the Indian River and continues for nearly 15 miles down the Hudson River Gorge,Ó stated the governorÕ s prepared release. The Adirondack Challenge would give the governor a chance to showcase these new Forest Preserve lands. The tentative itinerary for the Adirondack Challenge Festival

•Long Lake Central School: One person is vying for one open School Board position currently held by Board President Hallie Bond, according to school officials. Bond decided not to run again. The candidate is Paul Roalsvig. This position is a five-year term. Polls will be open from 2 to 8 p.m. May 21. •Newcomb Central School: There are two open School Board positions currently held by Board President Stephen Freiman and Eleanor Yandon, according to school officials. Freiman is not running again, and Yandon is running for his seat, a five-year term. Marlene Bott is running for the threeyear unexpired seat currently held by Yandon (she was appointed to fill David O’Donnell’s seat). Polls will be open from 1 to 8 p.m. May 21. The deadline for school board petitions was April 22.

sets Sunday, July 21 as the date and the town of Indian Lake as the place. However, nobody from the governor’s press office or Empire State Development, which runs the I Love New York program, could confirm or deny the information by press time. Even local outfitters and town officials are tight-lipped. Indian Lake Town Supervisor Brian Wells said he canÕ t say anything until the governor makes his announcement. Johnsburg Town Supervisor Ron Vanselow said he was out of the loop on the planning. Indian Lake Chamber of Commerce Board President Christine Pouch said she has not heard anything, as she just got back form vacation. Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism Executive Director Jim McKenna, based in Lake Placid, said he canÕ t say anything, as details are still being worked out and all plans are tentative at this point. And Gore Mountain Region Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Lisa Salamon said that while it looks as though Indian Lake in Hamilton County will be getting the Adirondack Challenge Festival, instead of the town of Johnsburg in Warren County, she and other business leaders in North River and North Creek will play a part in the event. Ò Since we have all the feet on the ground here, weÕ ll obviously be doing a couple of things,Ó Salamon said. Ò One, helping get the festival off the ground, especially with lodging and accommodations. If we’re going to have a big influx of people, obviously theyÕ re going to have to stay somewhere.Ó According to the tentative itinerary, the Adirondack Challenge would feature a whitewater race for the governor and other elected officials and invited guests. Then there will be an internationally competitive flatwater event and a festival with food and music. That would include an awards ceremony hosted by the governor. In 2013, the event would be branded the Adirondack Challenge Kickoff Festival. Partners would include the Adirondack Watershed Alliance and the Hudson River Professional Outfitters Association in conjunction with the Adirondack Challenge Steering Committee. Marketing and promotion would be handled by I Love New York. The Adirondack Challenge is designed to highlight the Adirondack Park as a tourism region. In its first year, a July festival would Ò set the stageÓ for a 2014 event in the spring, when whitewater rafting conditions are typically optimal.
Theaters unite from page 1
have given the movie theaters 12 to 18 months to convert all to digital. There will be no movies at these theaters without the conversion, so they are applying as a group.Ó Ò We are at the center of a community and we do this because we love it,” Hollywood owner Corey Hanff, whose first job was at the Palace Theater, said. Ò I canÕ t understand why we are being asked to spend extra money when the end goal will be to make the same amount that we are now.Ó Ò The loss of our local theaters would be a major economic and cultural blow to our Adirondack communities,Ó Adirondack Film Society Chair John Huttlinger said. Ò This campaign is a one-time effort to help the theaters upgrade their equipment, and as a result all residents and visitors will benefit from the expanded opportunities to see original work from independent filmmakers and film students; which will also provide theaters with additional income streams.Ó The ANCA is partnering with the Adirondack Film Society to raise money through the campaign for each theater to complete needed digital upgrade work this summer. The group is seeking to coordinate both a community-based campaign as well as outreach to major donors. At the kickoff, there will be a screening of the trailer for the campaign made by filmmakers Aaron Woolf (King Corn) and TJ Brearton (Adk Mogul).
