Raquette Lake sets Winter Carnival line up, derby Lake Eaton Ice Fishing Derby also set to take place this weekend By Christina Scanlon

christina@suncommunitynews.com

RAQUETTE LAKE — There are more than 50 years of Raquette Lake Winter Carnivals in the books and this year is shaping up to be another success. Organizers said there was enough ice on the lake for at least ice skating last week, with more expected to form before the weekend of events Feb. 12-14. The family-fun events are planned to please all ages and range from Ladies Auxiliary and fireworks to the infamous cross-cut and chain saw competition set for Sunday. Kat Forsell, Raquette Lake’s Winter Events Coordinator, expands the activity list each year depending on the weather and turn out. This year, Forsell has invited Michael Bartow to teach ice skating, dependent on the ice thickness. Barton’s session looks promising, as does the ice golf competition. Forsell said she enjoys planning the event as it was a large part of her childhood, a tradition she wants to carry on for future generations. Friday night, an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner will be held at the Raquette Lake Fire Hall for $10, while supplies last. Proceeds benefit the Raquette Lake Ladies Auxiliary. Saturday, the Raquette Lake Library will be open all day for warm up hut, restrooms and cookies. Friends are invited to drop off cookies. At 11 a.m., at the Village Green, kids activities and games including sledding, balloon chase and more will take place. At noon, the Ladies Frying Pan Toss with cash prizes is sure to please the crowd, also at the Village Green. From noon until 2 p.m., the children’s ice skating with instructor Michael Bartow will be held near the town dock, weather dependent. At 2 p.m., a snow golf competition with cash prizes gets underway. This event will take place on land if ice levels aren’t thick enough. Wrap up the evening with fireworks followed by a tugof-war at 7 p.m. A bonfire is ongoing throughout the day at the Village Green. The fun continues Sunday, with an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast at the Raquette Lake Fire Hall from 9 a.m. to noon, for a $10 fee. Proceeds benefit the Raquette Lake Ladies Auxiliary. At noon, a cross cut and chain saw competition will be held with men, women, mixed and family divisions. Cash prizes will be awarded. Don’t forget to bring your own chain saw for this timed event. For ice conditions and updates on the event, sponsored by the town of Long Lake, visit facebook.com/raquettelake.

Lake Eaton Fishing Derby on for Saturday The Lake Eaton Fishing Derby will take place Saturday at Lake Eaton. Registration at the Town Hall starts at 6 a.m., with tip-ups and lines in at 7 a.m. Live weigh-ins at Lake Eaton Campground Beach will be held at 3 p.m. Cash prizes will be awarded for trout and landlocked salmon on Lake Eaton. There is a $25 fee per person for the event, sponsored by the Long Lake Fish and Game Club.

Rescue squad turns 60 By Mike Corey

news@suncommunitynews.com

MINERVA — The Minerva Rescue Squad was formed in mid-1956 as an organization within the Minerva Volunteer Fire Department. For the last 60 years, the Squad has relied on volunteers to treat and transport the sick and injured to area hospitals, primarily Glens Falls Emergency Room. The 60-year life of the squad has been greatly successful, welcoming three babies into the world and becoming the first area ambulance squad to provide its patients and community with advanced life support care. Seven ambulances have served the squad over the years, the first being a used Buick that was purchased by way of a door-to-door fundraiser, led by the first Captain, Harold Sylvester. Today, the Squad operates with a 2010 Ford E450 Road Rescue modular ambulance that was purchased in the summer of 2012. During the first few years of the squad, females were not allowed to become actual members. The nurses that volunteered on the ambulance were called “Alternate Members.” It was Squad Policy that a female attendant be present during the transport of a female patient. One of the nurses, Fran Paradis, served 37 years with the squad, the longest active member during its sixty years. Dispatchers (Helen Sylvester was the first in Minerva) were also vital as there was no such thing as 911 in Minerva until 1988, when

Warren County Sheriff ’s Office took over the dispatching. Minerva dispatchers (also volunteer) would call ambulance drivers and EMT’s asking, “can you go on the ambulance?” Most dispatchers would be up all night communicating with the crews during all kinds of emergencies. Today, the squad works closely with the fire department, and continues to operate out of the shared building in Olmstedville. The squad and the fire department work very closely to maintain excellent emergency medical services to the citizens of the Town of Minerva and nearby communities. To help maintain its quality emergency medical care for the residents of Minerva and surrounding communities, the Minerva Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad recently purchased a Lifepak 15 monitor/defibrillator, an upgrade of its current Lifepak 12 unit. The new Lifepak 15 has technological innovations that will further assist the rescue squad and the people it serves over at least the next decade. The monitor/defibrillator was purchased from Bay Ridge Rescue Squad of Queensbury using funds donated by Town of Minerva residents specifically for defibrillator purchase as well as other funds donated to the Minerva Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad. Many thanks to all who have volunteered time, energy, and money toward this recent important acquisition. To learn more about how you can help your community by becoming a part of the Minerva Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad, check with any member of the department.

Missing are members Brannon, William Maguire, Harry Raymond, Willard Jenkins, Gordon Downe and Donald Burnham.

Members of the squad in 2016 are, back from left: Simon Gardner, Holly Steady, Mike Corey, Debbie Palmatier, Brandon Dunbar; front from left: Patty Warrington, Karen Wright, Cameron Dubay, Karissa Wright and Natalie Royer-Loiselle. MCS board hears about BOCES, BackPack Program

The cast of It’s a Wonderful Life performing in Blue Mountain Lake last year.

‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ comes to Indian Lake George Bailey comes alive through Gem Radio Theatre

By Mike Corey

news@suncommunitynews.com

INDIAN LAKE — The Gem Radio Theatre production of “It’s a Wonderful Life” returns Saturday, Feb. 13, at the Indian Lake Theater, at 7:30 p.m. while the annual Snowcade celebration will still be going on. The classic story of George Bailey, the humble and giving owner of the Bailey Savings and Loan in little Bedford Falls will be presented as radio theatre, similar to its presentation back in 1948. Directed by Hannah Jay and starring local actors from around the area, this production was presented by Gen Radio Theatre in North Creek, Blue Mountain Lake, and Chestertown in late autumn of last year. Attendees are welcome to donate hats, mittens, and dollars to enter into a community raffle for swell prizes. All proceeds will go to benefit the Cabin Fever Players.

MINERVA — The Jan. 14 meeting of the Minerva Central School Board of Education had a full program, with a pair of interesting presentations. The first presentation featured an introduction of BOCES programs available to students by WashingtonSaratoga-Warren-Hamilton-Essex Board of Cooperative Education Services (aka BOCES) Superintendent James Dexter. This was followed by personal thoughts about the program in which two MCS students – Emma Feiden and Amber Vanderwarker. Both are in the first year of a two-year program that focuses on early childhood education, based at the BOCES center on Dix Avenue in Hudson Falls. Both juniors at MCS, the duo have plans to continue on with early childhood education following their completion of the BOCES program. BOCES Deputy Superintendent Tim Place and BOCES board member Paul Rice were also there to support the students who were presenting. Ronnie Silver and Andrea

Hogan of the Adirondack Community Outreach Center (ACOC) in North Creek provided the second presentation to the Board, with which they introduced the idea of MCS establishing a “Backpack Program” for eligible kids at the school. This program — already in place at Johnsburg Central School, Schroon Lake Central School, and other area public schools) — provides bags of food for income-eligible kids for weekend use. Working with the Regional Food Band of Northeastern New York, the ACOC would facilitate the packing of bags each week by school staff, who would then distribute them to participating students on Friday afternoons. The Board appreciated the effort made by the presenters and decided to take the program under consideration. After the BOE approval of financial reports, Superintendent Tim Farrell presented information on a number of recent activities and issues involving MCS. He noted that as of Jan. 1, the minimum wage in NYS is now $9/hour, which the

school will be accommodating. Farrell recognized and thanked business manager Nancy O’Brien for applying for and receiving a much-needed grant of $14,000 from the NYS Education Department earmarked for the purchase of a new dishwasher for the kitchen. He also mentioned that he has been in contact with a solar power company interested in a possible energy production relationship with MCS. The ongoing Strategic Planning Project which the Minerva and MCS communities have been meeting about and working on for the past several months will be complete in February. This effort will set the agenda for Minerva Central School District planning, utilizing a community/ school partnership. As reported by Farrell, to possibly further this overall planning initiative, MCS and seven other “True North” schools in the area will be participating in a regional planning effort that may result in new money-saving shared services among the participating schools.

Many of the schools in the True North group already share various services — this regional planning initiative will likely result in the identification of additional proposals. Farrell also reported that MCS may possibly collaborate with other True North schools in regard to funding MCS received through the NYS 2014 Smart Schools Bond Act.

ThanksÊ forÊ toyÊ help

To the Editor: As the event coordinator for the annual Holiday Toy Drive for the past 10 years, I have endured the honor of experiencing the true meaning in the spirit of giving during the holiday season. Each holiday season, every town in every state across the country has families where Christmas is a stressor rather than a time of joy because the monetary means to provide gifts for under the tree is difficult. As I can’t speak for every town in every state across the country, I can speak for the North Country region. We are a region of small, close-knit communities who take care of their own. I began the Toy Drive with only a few hundred dollars and financially grew immensely over the years. I wish to extend my heartfelt thanks and appreciation the community members and businesses, locally and throughout the North Country Region who have generously contributed over the past decade. I further wish to thank my former place of employment, M&M Diner for sponsoring the Toy Drive for the first eight years and to Connie Drake, of Connie’s Rusty Zipperz Consignment & Thrift Store for sponsoring the Toy Drive for the past two years. Much thanks and appreciation extended to the following organizations: Au Sable Forks Volunteer Fire Department & Women’s Auxiliary, Au Sable Forks Elementary School’s P.T.O., Matt Parks of Ward Lumber Company and Au Sable Valley Central School’s Booster Club. I am thankful to the Press Republican, Sun Community News and Jay Online Community News for assisting with the promotion of the Annual Holiday Toy Drive. As I end my 10-year run, I am confident to the Annual Toy Drive will continue on in making certain girls and boys in our community have a joyous holiday season. AÊ tinyÊ town

To the Editor: Editor’s Note: The following poem was submitted by Essex resident Jeff Murdock in response to our Jan. 30 editorial board opinion piece, “A tiny town with not-so-tiny problems.” Two roads, a ferry, and a lake Do not a city make Nor hamlet so I read For hamlets have no churches Nor government to lead But the lovely intersections Of travel wet and dry Are perfect for the village That lives in my mind’s eye Now those who visit, those who stay Are not quite all the same Each has its own perspective Each sings its own refrain The village has old timers And latecomers in its fold Plus an influx of summer folks Who leave when it gets cold

Now toss in all the travelers Who are only passing through Some stop and have a bite to eat And all enjoy the view This mixture of humanity Creates a potpourri Which means within the village People often disagree Of course they hate the winter And warmly welcome summer But when it comes to politics Its glum and even glummer No unifying vision No common cause for all But rather each to owns the cry On Main Street or Town Hall But the village seems to thrive And remain a lakeside treasure For residents and visitors All love it in full measure

SteppingÊ downÊ withÊ gratitude

Jeff Moredock Essex

To the Editor: As the 2015 holiday season marked my fourth and final time as coordinator of the annual Holiday (Christmas) Meal Tote Drive, I leave with enormous feelings of gratitude and humility. Countless community members, year-round and seasonal, gracious contributors who reside outside of the Adirondacks but hold ties to the area, businesses and organizations were partners with assisting me to prepare and deliver 51 Christmas meals to families experiencing financial difficulties, those enduring a health crisis and to several senior citizens who enjoyed a ham or turkey meal. I wish to thank the community members and businesses who donated either a turkey or ham, non-perishable food items and/or provided a monetary contribution. I further wish to thank the following local organizations who provide a donation each holiday season: The Office of the Town of Jay Supervisor Archie Depo, Knights of Columbus/Au Sable Forks Council, Au Sable Forks Volunteer Fire Department & Women’s Auxiliary, the Au Sable Forks Elementary School’s Parent-Teacher Organization and JCEO (Melissa Walton). Much thanks and appreciation is extended to the following local media outlets: Plattsburgh Press Republican, Sun Community News and Dr. Seth and Trudy Rosenblum of The Jay Online Community News. In conclusion, as I stand down from my post, I depart with great confidence the annual Holiday Meal (Christmas) Tote Drive will continue. Au Sable Forks is a close-knit community who takes care of its own and the spirit of giving is 24/7. Kelly C. Murphy, Au Sable Forks

DonÕ tÊ letÊ JCOPEÊ issueÊ rest To the Editor:

Thank you for your op-ed, “New York: Welcome to the state of authoritarianism.” This is a scary direction for our state government to be taking. Even worse, from some stories I’ve heard, this attitude seems to stem from our governor himself. I have heard that employees in the state offices are required to submit for approval any stories, interviews, etc., for approval if the governor’s name is mentioned. Reason: “The press might see it.” The governor and his staff seemingly do NOT approve of free speech if it is about them. Please keep up with this subject: Do not let it rest and disappear. WWIIÊ combatÊ vet:Ê VoteÊ Trump To the Editor:

The article in the Jan. 30 newspaper by Nadine Battaglia was very good and I hope a lot of people read it. I am a combat vet of WWII and very turned off about all these murders, rapes, stealing and lying. Much of them from our own government. This year, vote Republican if Trump gets the nomination. TheÊ publicÊ misinformedÊ byÊ theÊ Sun To the Editor:

For shame, for shame sun reporters for your abusive use of the writings of Charles John Hufffman Dickens. In last week’s editorial your comparison of Dickens introduction in the “The Tale of Two Cities” with Essex is reprehensible in every sense of the word. In this era of raging acts of terrorism, the Town of Essex is appalled at your lack of propriety and sensibility. That SUN attack editorial is, as usual, a bore, full of misinformation, self generated issues, misconceptions, and horrible misuse of literary metaphor. Its language was obviously written by a sociopath. Why do you stay in the pocket of a such a person? Why don’t you have enough journalistic integrity to write your own versions of “yellow” journalism of this lowest form? As for your strident charges, the editorial contains no less than five misrepresentations, such as claiming your paper had to personally present a FOIA request which you never performed. How can you allege subterfuge in the sale of our vacant Church building sale when we held an open hearing before any sale? Why did you claim that Essex has entered into a shared service agreement with Willsboro when such an action requires Town Board agreement which has not been made? Your use of shoddy journalism must justify your desire to appease a few vindictive persons. Citizens of Essex County if you want full and complete accounts, you may write me at jlafore92@gmail.com, come visit me when I return in Mid-March, call upon any member of the Town Board or arrive at a Town Board meeting. Lastly, I have always gone out of my way to treat the SUN as if it is a top rated news agency, and in spite of your vitriolic anger because Essex does not love you the way you wish, I shall continue to do so. The SUN should never forget that it is supposed to be a repository for reporting not a haven for failed and unsuccessful fiction writers and favoritism. Jim LaForest Essex Editor’s Note: We never claimed to “personally” present a FOIL request. A reporter emailed a FOIL request for the 2016 Essex Budget to Supervisor Ed Gardner and Secretary to the Supervisor Catherine DeWolff on Dec. 8. DeWolff replied as follows: “All FOIA requests go through the Town Clerk. I will forward this request to her now.” The town complied immediately with providing the 2016 Essex Budget, which was adopted on Nov. 12.

StillÊ gotÊ yourÊ handÊ out? To the Editor:

Let’s get one thing straight…if you haven’t given up anything for this country, you shouldn’t have a voice. But you do! Try giving up part of your life for the freedoms you enjoy today. Many of us did! The way Vietnam Vets were treated when they came back to the States; being spit on was enough for me to enlist. I spent three years of my life in the U.S. Navy. Three years that I was proud to serve. When you’re in the armed forces, you are living under socialism. Your life is not your own. What have you done? The actions of the war protesters sent a message to other countries. Let me explain. When I was in Toulon, France and Naples, Italy in 1974 I wore my naval uniform and was spit on. At the time, I didn’t know why. The only answer I could come up with was that these people watched American demonstrators spit on our American soldiers upon their return from Vietnam. It saddens my heart to see Americans vote for a president who circumvents the Constitution of the United States. The same Constitution that I was sworn to protect and uphold at all costs. Where were you? I realize you have the right to vote for whomever you want to vote for, but I’d also like to remind you of who fought for those rights. Did you? These men and women still exist. They are being treated better by the people, but look at the administration and how they are treating them. We have lost lives, lives that have ceased to exist. Ask a Gold Star mother or father how to fill the void that will never be replaced. Ask the wives or husbands who continue on without their partner. Last but not least, ask the children who live without a mother or a father. I would like to quote President Kennedy. “The rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of God. The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it and the glow from the fire can truly light the world. And so my fellow Americans, Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country. Let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help. But knowing that here on earth God’s work must truly be our own” Still got your hand out? Brett M. Thompson Moriah

W

e all have our favorite eateries at home and away. Kaye and I recently spent a month in Kissimmee, Florida and had no problem finding places to chow down. Special thanks to family and friends for gifting us with restaurant cards to aid and assist with keeping my girth near the limit of my belt. For Kaye, on the other hand, bird bites maintained her fighting figure at 94 pounds. She orders a toasted cheese sandwich with a slice of tomato, along with a cup of soup and brings half the sandwich home for a snack. I order a full-course meal and smack my lips when I lick the plate. Do opposites attract? In our case, they certainly do. Thanks to our trusty GPS and my unfailing sense of smell when food is being prepared, we had no problem whatever zeroing in on enough restaurants to keep us satiated. Some were old standards while others were new discoveries. Some were wonderful; others were horrendous. I won’t burden you with a list of the good ones. I’m easy to please. Just bring me meat and potatoes with a nice veggie or a tasty piece of fish and I’m a happy camper. Oh, I appreciated the sauces and the perfect presentation we found along the way, but there were a few disappointments. Most of them had to do with inflated prices. I had no complaints about the all-you-can-eat buffets. I always got more than my money’s worth. After all, I felt obligated to make up for the teeny portions Kaye put on her plate. Desserts? Yup—those, too. We found a Florida version of a Plattsburgh chain favorite just one block from our condo and moved our forks up and down there often. When the service and fare are exemplary, we not only praise the wait staff, but management. We also show our appreciation with generous tips. We singled out a few upscale restaurants along the way and were generally pleased with what we found. However, on one occasion, we chose what sounded like a steak house. Big mistake. It took so long for the waitress to explain the meat selection that I took a nap while my stomach gurgled the blues. The wine list had names I could neither pronounce nor afford and I was not impressed with the pomp and circumstance. Entrees were beyond expensive and anything extra, including vegetables, added to the exorbitant tab. Someone at our table ordered butter for his bread and the cost was over five dollars. I ate my expensive pork chops while Kaye sipped her lobster bisque. We opted out of dessert and drove away singing the blues with lighter wallets. I suppose some diners enjoy that kind of pomposity, but we couldn’t wait to get back to our old haunts in Plattsburgh to order two michigans with. ILCSD board votes to give vets school tax break By William Quinlivan

news@suncommunitynews.com

INDIAN LAKE — The district school board here voted to allow veterans to take advantage of a much-debated tax credit. During the January meeting of the Indian Lake Central School’s Board of Education Meeting, the board voted by a margin of 4-to1 to match the policy of the Town of Indian Lake with regard to offering veterans who live in the district the ability to take advantage of the Veteran Tax Exemption. Board member Jon Voorhees abstained from the vote, explaining that he preferred for the board to have developed its own exemption policy versus following that of the town.

The move offers resident veterans a significant reduction on the assessed value of property that they deem as a primary residence. Those serving in a combat era, having related disabilities or suffering the loss of a loved one as a result of service, are offered even more significant reductions in assessed value for the purposes of calculation of school taxes. For those veterans not already receiving exemptions from the town and county, an application along with detailed information about the exemption, necessary forms and/or items for validation of service are available at the town hall on Pelon Road through the Office of the Assessor.

Other Business Mari Cecil, from Bernier, Carr and Associ-

ates (BCA), was on hand to provide an overview of the most recent Building Condition Survey. This survey is mandated to occur every five years. Cecil explained the objective includes protecting the health, safety and welfare of building occupants and provide a plan for the next five years of capital projects. According to Cecil, the visual inspection of the building included the following observations: Fuel tank is nearing its 20-year life expectancy; site pavement repairs needed with special attention to the parking lot outside the cafeteria, the tennis court and its fencing needing attention; a significant amount of masonry deterioration including cracked brick and bad mortar joints; ramp and stair

issues were noted; windows have not been replaced since the mid to late-1980’s; Pictures of roof were used to reinforce the fact that warranty is approaching its end date. Flashing and membrane problems were noted as was the fact that skylights do not all meet current regulations. Roof vents are rusted and need replacement; interior was very well maintained but some shortcomings were noted. The total cost estimate, including contingencies and incidentals, was defined by Cecil as $3,341,511. Cecil recommended the next steps should be for the Board to prioritize the work and develop a five year plan. The next regular scheduled meeting of board will be Tuesday, Feb. 9, 7 p.m. in the school cafeteria.

Tri-County gets grant By Bill Quinlivan

news@suncommunitynews.com

NORTH CREEK — Adirondack Tri-County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center has received a generous matching grant of $30,000 from the Cloudsplitter Foundation. The grant is earmarked for the purchase of a new 12-passenger bus with a wheelchair lift. Officials at the center point out that such a bus is sorely needed by the center. As such, this grant will be the start of a major campaign to raise the remaining funds for the bus purchase. Right now, the center uses a 2006 model bus with 185,000 miles on it. Since the Center uses this vehicle on a daily basis to transport residents for medical appointments and activities, a new, reliable replacement is deemed essential. ” The new vehicle is desperately needed so we can provide safe comfortable, transportation for our residents,” Administrator Hal G. Payne said. “Since this is a matching grant, we are making an appeal to the community at large to help us reach the goal of attaining this new vehicle for our residents”. Those in the community wishing to make contributions can mail them to Adirondack TriCounty Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 112 Ski Bowl Rd., North Creek, N.Y. 12853.

The upgraded accommodations are to feature a 48-passenger dining car with a larger, full kitchen capable of serving up to 300 meals per run as well as a “luxurious” lounge car with a full-service bar, couches and oversized chairs, Gonyo said. The new accommodations will give dinner-train passengers the opportunity to socialize in comfort, he added. For the past several years, the dinner trips have featured the dome cars equipped merely with a small galley. This dining service began in 2013 with four trips, and was increased annually to 14 last year, and all but one of these trips were sold out. The dining excursions include 31 dinner trains, 26 brunch trains, 32 lunch trains, and five holiday trains serving both lunch and brunch. The expanded array of dining trips — to run between Saratoga Springs and Thurman station — is apt to help the railway’s finances. The railway is calling their diner excursions with their up-

graded accommodations “The Pullman Table,” referring to the iconic Pullman rail passenger service popular during the early 20th century. The railway’s parent company, Iowa Pacific, acquired the Pullman name in 2012 and has used it in connection with their commuter train service in Oklahoma and trips they run in collaboration with Amtrak from Chicago to New Orleans. “We are very pleased this premier luxury service will be coming to the Saratoga-North Creek Railway,” Gonyo said. For years, SNCRR has suffered disappointing ridership except for its annual holiday-themed Polar Express trains — short excursions out of Saratoga Springs marketed for children. In 2015, these Polar Express trips attracted nearly 25,000 passengers between Nov. 17 to Dec. 28, Gonyo said. The railway’s “snow trains,” intended to take skiers from Saratoga Springs to North Creek for skiing at Gore Mountain, were scuttled this year due to lack of passengers in recent years. Last year, SNCRR operated 32 snow trains. SNCRR announced in late November they were discontinuing the snow trains — before the lack of snowfall and warm temperatures of winter 2015 were evident. “We’re looking forward to the spring, summer and fall sea-

sons,” Gonyo said. By contract, Warren County and the town of Corinth — which own the tracks and rail bed — required SNCRR to operate a minimum of 30 snow trains, but the two municipalities have allowed the railway to drop the snow trains without legal consequences. The five-year contract between SNCRR and Warren County and Corinth expires in June, and negotiations are underway on a new contract, county Administrator Paul Dusek said Feb. 1. Food and beverages to be served on the new Pullman Table trips are to be sourced locally whenever possible, featuring many premier local businesses and providers, Gonyo said. “This is an exciting new biz franchise that will be running alongside our regularly scheduled trains,” he said. At the Jan. 25 meeting, Thurman Supervisor Evelyn Wood asked Gonyo about the caboose the railway brought to Thurman station last year as a new attraction. Gonyo had said in early 2015 that the caboose was to host a snack concession during summer and fall for rail travelers, but the concession never opened, Wood noted. “It will open up this spring,” Gonyo replied. “We still have an interested operator for the caboose.”
