Bernie’s bill may create 10 million solar rooftops U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), chairman of the Senate’s green jobs subcommittee, last week introduced legislation with nine cosponsors to encourage the installation of 10 million solar systems on the rooftops of homes and businesses over the next decade.“At a time when we spend $350 billion importing oil from Saudi Arabia and other countries every year, the United States must move away from foreign oil to energy independence,” Sanders said. “A dramatic expansion of solar power is a clean and economical way to help break our dependence on foreign oil, reduce greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming, improve our geopolitical position, and create good-paying green jobs.” At a Senate committee hearing today, Sanders questioned Energy Secretary Steven Chu about President Obama’s budget for next year. The White House requested $2.4 billion for energy efficiency and renewable energy programs. The requested 5 percent boost overall included a 22 percent increase for solar power. The potential for solar power also was the subject of testimony last week before Sanders’ green jobs subcommittee by Jeff Wolfe, chief executive officer of groSolar in White River Junction, Vt. Wolfe said Sanders’ bill “would help homeowners and small businesses stabilize their energy costs.” Sanders’ bill would authorize rebates which, along with other incentives, would cover up to half the cost of the 10 million solar power systems and 200,000 water heating systems. Non-profit groups and state and local governments also would be eligible. The legislation would ensure that participating homeowners and businesses also receive information on incentives to improve energy efficiency. Sanders said a recent report shows that solar power could help make every state more energy independent if solar units were installed on available rooftop space, because every state can meet 10 percent or more of its electricity needs just through rooftop solar. Moreover, because solar energy creates more jobs per megawatt than other energy sources. Sanders’ bill could create hundreds of thousands of jobs over the next ten years in the solar industry.
Woman arrested for heroin sale RUTLAND — The Southern Vermont Drug Task Force conducted an investigation into the distribution of heroin in the Rutland area. On three separate occasions, Jacqueline A. Macheski, age 45, of Pawlet, sold a total of 39 bags of heroin to an agent with the task force. On Jan. 19, Macheski was arrested at a residence in Danby. Following her arrest, Macheski was issued a criminal citation. She will appear in Rutland District Court March 1 to answer to three felony charges of Sale of Heroin.

EXTINCT GIANT — Little is known about Vermont’s Ice Age giants but studies have revealed human-made projectile points were used to hunt shaggy mastodons locally. A replica of the elephant-like baby and adult—10-feet-tall at the shoulder—is shown here at a new New York State Museum exhibit in Albany. By 10,000 B.C., over 100 species, including giant mastodons and moose-elk, had disappeared from Vermont’s landscape. A similar Ice Age beast, the larger wooly mammoth, also lived in Vermont; its remains were found in Mt. Holly while mastodon remains were found in Bristol— proof that both elephant-like giants roamed our ancient backyard. Photo by Lou Varricchio

Nakita 9 month old. Spayed Female. Labrador Retriever mix. I am a happy eager girl who enjoys attention and loves to run and play. Right now, I think a leash is a chew toy. Actually, I think everything I can get my teeth on is a chew toy so there’s lots of work ahead for me.
Kodiak 10 year old. Neutered Male. Alaskan Malamute. I am a lovely gentleman. I enjoy people and I am playful for my age and walk nicely on a leash. At 10 years old, I am definitely a senior citizen. I was diagnosed with a torn ACL ligament back in May 2009 that causes me to favor my back leg. I could stand to lose some weight and that would make it easier on me to get around.
Laura 5 year old. Spayed Female. Domestic Short Hair Gray and White. My personality is much like my brother, Tiny. We came from a home where we were abandoned with about 8 other cats. I am not quite as shy as my brother but I do like to snuggle where it is warm and quiet.
Sunshine 4 year old. Spayed Female. Domestic Long Hair Black and White. My previous family had to surrender me to RCHS because they couldn’t afford to take care of me any longer. I have lived with children and other cats and I like their company.

Teen’s winning ways honor grandfather, hunting tradition WELLS — Cam Pratt, an eighth grader enrolled at Poultney High School, is the son of David and Meredith Pratt of Wells. Today, the local community is proud of the quiet teen who recently wrote an award-winning essay about a life-changing Vermont hunting trip and broke a state game record. The boy, who became a man during the trek in the wilds of Rutland County, had never fired a .308 firearm until he shot his grandfather’s heritage hunting rifle on what became a memorable autumn day— memorable for a number of reasons. This rural Vermont story is especially noteworthy because Cam Pratt’s grandfather—Ed Pratt of Wells, the original owner of the .308—died in July 2009. And it was the late Ed Pratt’s rifle that his grandson used to shoot a record-breaking 8-point buck during his first hunting excursion. During November 2009, the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department ran an essay contest for young hunters asking them to submit personal stories about their 2009 Youth Hunting Weekend experience. Cam Pratt’s essay is reprinted below; it was selected as the top youth essay (Rutland County) from dozens of essays submitted by young hunters. In recognition of the writing achievement, Pratt received a camouflage fanny pack, neck tunic, fleece scarf, and spiral bound book with information and maps about Vermont wildlife management areas. Pratt was asked to read his essay aloud at the Yankee Sportsman's Classic held at the Champlain Valley Exposition Center. Gov. Jim Douglas presented Pratt m with his prizes. Before contest officials handed out the youth essay awards, the state’s deer hunting grand prize winner, which is named by the Vermont Big Game Trophy Club for the most the impressive trophy, was announced. As luck would go, a stunned Cam Pratt was the winner of the trophy award, too—the trophy club director introduced Pratt after announcing that the Rutland County buck was one of the largest ever felled during the state’s Youth Hunting event. Cam Pratt’s special “trophy” prize included a hunting vest and an all-expense paid, weeklong, guided Maine black bear hunt set for September 2010. Cam’s father, David Pratt, was invited to join the Maine bear hunt. Pratt’s double game-related win was a special tribute to the memory of his beloved, hunter grandfather Ed Pratt. What follows is the text of Cam Pratt’s award-winning essay: “The first day of the 2009 Vermont Youth Hunting Weekend was like one I would never forget. My dad had gotten permission to hunt on two of our relative’s properties—one of our cousins and my great uncle allowed us to hunt on their properties—and I thanked them both very much. “When my dad and I were about to go out, he gave me a choice of two firearms to use— his .243 or my grandfathers
.308. My grandfather, who recently passed away in July, was an avid hunting enthusiast; he went out for rifle season every year, and managed to get results just about every year. “Now I had been practicing with the .243 for the past couple weeks because I was preparing to use that rifle, but on that day something felt different about my grandfather’s rifle. I had never fired it before, but out of respect for my late grandfather I thought I would give it one more run in the field. Who knew that run would get such a huge result? “Our hunt at our cousin’s property yielded no results, but we could tell that there had been a lot of buck activity around there because there were numerous tree hookings and scrapes. So we called it a day there and headed back to the house. Later that day, we headed down to my great uncle’s house and set up a rifle stand in a blind we had put up earlier that day next to a spruce tree plot. My great uncle said there were deer there almost every day, so we decided to give it a shot. “After waiting for about an hour I saw horns move across the plot and into a small patch of corn about 75 yards away from us. My dad didn’t see the buck from the blind but rather a doe that walked straight into a clearing right in front of us. He told me I had a perfect shot at the doe but I was so sure I saw horns I waited patiently for the buck to reappear. After an excruciating couple minutes,

The teen won the youth essay contest (Rutland County) and the statewide game trophy for taking the largest buck by a youth in 2009. the corn started to rustle and the buck appeared trotting out of the corn. My dad still couldn’t see it but he said, ‘If you see it, go for it, shoot!’ I fired and ended up bringing down a 154 lbs. 8-point deer. Until this day, I still firmly believe that my grandfather’s spirit was there with us in that gun and that’s how I got the deer. “After I got the meat back from the processor, I divided up a portion of the venison and gave it to my great uncle as thanks for letting me hunt on his property. I also sent the head to the taxidermist so that I may remember my accomplishment and my grandfa-
ther’s hunting legacy he left to my family for years to come. “This being my first deer, it will be very hard to top in the future, but I will keep using the .308 every year from now on in hopes that I may one day be as good a hunter as my grandfather.” —Cam Pratt Special thanks to PHS Principal Jean Oakman for providing the Rutland Tribune with this news story.

The planet from Hell W
ith a cool name that’s right out of “Star Trek”, newly discovered exoplanet COROT Exo-7b is the first rocky planet to be identified outside of our solar system. The planet has a gravity of 1.5 g (versus Earth’s 1 g), an atmosphere, and may have bubbling oceans of molten lava on the side facing its parent star—a sunlike yellow star called COROT-7. But while terrestrial-like COROT Exo-7b is slightly larger than Earth and orbits a similar sun, all other comparisons to our blue-green planet must be thrown out the window— COROT Exo-7b is a world that could support Dante’s notion of the Inferno. COROT Exo-7b has been called the Planet from Hell by some astronomers for that very reason. But COROT Exo-7b’s Hell is one of contrasts between both lava and ice. With a rapid orbital period of 20 hours, COROT Exo-7b zips around its sun like a bandit. However, the planet doesn't rotate like Earth. Thus. one side is tidally locked to its sun resulting in a bizarre place of extremes. COROT Exo-7b also orbits in very close to COROT-7, about 1/23rd the distance between our Sun and Mercury. With one face to the sun and being so close to the furnace, the excessive temperatures on the daylight side of the planet mean any rock is in a molten state—think of a vast volcanic place with bubbling oceans of lava. Astronomer guess that the atmosphere of COROT Exo-7b is composed of vaporized silicates and metals—that is, gaseous rock! It appears the main ingredients of the planet’s atmosphere are sodium, oxygen, silicon monoxide, potassium, magnesium, aluminum, calcium, silicon, iron and uranium. Hell, indeed! COROT Exo-7b’s surface temperature may be between 3,300 to 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Astronomers can only guess at the planet’s eternal nightside—perhaps something like Pluto? There may be a twilight zone straddling the day and night side of COROT Exo-7b. In this narrow zone, surface temperatures may be a tad more Earthlike. However, with an atmosphere of vaporized rock, life as we know could never exist even in the planet’s twilight zone.
Gather your coupons … and multi-stack!
L
ast week, I introduced you to the concept of multi-stacking, a term I use to refer to any deal at the grocery store that involves applying multiple discounts to the purchase of the same items. Through multi-stacking, shoppers can enjoy even greater savings at the register each week, leveraging the power of store coupons, manufacturer coupons and additional sales or special promotions being held at the store. My favorite deals are “money-back” supermarket sales, in which part of what you pay for your items is returned to you at checkout in the form of a Catalina coupon good for money off your next purchase. One of the stores I shop at recently had a “Spend $30, get $15 back” sale on a variety of items. I get very excited when I see these sales, because that $30 is the total before coupons are factored in – pre-coupon, I call it. This particular deal included a variety of cereals. All of them were priced at $2 a box. By buying 15 boxes I could reach the $30 spending mark and qualify for the special sale. Now, right away, I suspect a few of my readers may be snickering a bit. Fifteen boxes of cereal? In one shopping trip? You bet! At my store, these great, highlevel money-back sales tend to come around only once every few months or so. When they do, it’s a great opportunity to stock up on the cheap. Cereal is an excellent item to add to your grocery stockpile at home. It typically doesn’t outdate for 11 months or more. And when you buy more, you save more. I always take advantage of these sales when they come along. And I can’t remember a time when I paid more than a quarter a box for a name-brand cereal. Really. That’s actually the high end of what I’ll pay. I typically pay much less than that for cereal, as you’ll see during my story of this $30/$15 sale. As I entered the cereal aisle, I was on the lookout for in-store coupons. It’s always a good idea to scan for coupons that may be in dispensers or on the shelves of your supermarket. When I see coupons for products I like I always take a few, because I will have those coupons on hand next time a sale comes around. Sometimes, the coupon you need to sweeten a deal is hanging right in front

of you on the shelf. Keep your eyes open! That was the case with my cereal buy. As I added 15 boxes to my cart, I spied a tear pad of $1 coupons for the cereal hanging on the shelf right under the boxes. So, I took 15 of them. I never clean out a store of coupons; there are typically more than a hundred coupons on a tear By Jill Cataldo pad. Don’t be afraid to take what you will use! Remember, coupons are placed there in the hope that you will use them and try the product. I headed to the register with my 15 boxes of $2 cereal and 15 $1 coupons. The cashier scanned my cereal and the register total came to $30. I handed the cashier my $1 coupons; after they were redeemed, my bill was $15. I paid $15… and I received $15 back in Catalina coupons good for my next shopping trip. So, I got back the same amount of money I spent on the cereal. My 15 boxes of cereal are, essentially, free. I’ve stressed this point in previous columns but I can’t say it often enough: shoppers must think of coupons as cash. They are essentially a form of cash, for shoppers and for the stores where we do business. When a supermarket has a sale like a “Spend $30, get $15 back,” shoppers still spend $30 on the items. My $1 coupons “paid” for $15 of my $30 spending and the store will get that $15 back from the manufacturer when it redeems the coupons. The $15 in Catalina coupons that I received function just like cash in the store. They’re good for anything I want to buy on my next shopping trip. So, I view this as having exchanged one form of cash for another… but I’m still holding the $15 in my hand that I just paid for the cereal. It’s just in the form of a coupon now. And you know how much I love coupons!

One theory, based on a computer model, suggests CoRoT7b began as a gaseous Neptune-like planet that, for reasons unknown, got too close to COROT-7. What’s in the Sky: This weekend, look in the SouthSoutheast 10 minutes before sunrise. The crescent Moon is in Capricorn with Mercury to the southeast. With binoculars or a small telescope you can view several asteroids. All deep space objects in this field of view will require a telescope of 6inch diameter or larger. A highway to heaven A
tractor-trailer hauling milk at 3:30 a.m. jackknifed on Interstate 89 and completely blocked the road. Within minutes, a passenger vehicle collided with it. In turn, another tractor-trailer that was also hauling milk hit both truck no. 1 and the auto. Both tractor-trailer drivers hauled milk along this route regularly. The jackknifed tractor-trailer driver survived the crashes, but one of the two occupants in the auto did not. The second milk truck driver died. As I passed the crash site the following day, highway workers had replaced guardrails and a towing company hauled off the charred carnage while the smell of smoke hovered thick in the atmosphere. This is another one of my lectures about winter driving tips. I was going to write that there are scant few, if any, situations related to icy roads that cause you to have an accident. But here, now, after this local deadly ice related double fatality, I’d look like a goof suggesting such a thing. Guess who’s a goof? The list of so-called causes of this accident is nearly endless, and should include— Traveling at 3:30 a.m., especially during winter. The drivers may have been over driving the hard to read conditions. (Records show the temperature was between 30-34 degrees). The folks in the vehicle who came upon the tractor-trailer might, I stress might, have been following too closely. All drivers involved could have been tired. Visibility could have been zero. One or all of the motor vehicles may have had poor tire rubber. Do not assume I’m blaming human error for this awful crash. But do assume I’m saying one could blame a series of humanly avoidable circumstances which probably led to the crash—if only one of those circumstances was avoided those folks who died might still be alive. Reports following the event included Vermont’s top road expert bucking up his crew procedures from that night; to me anyway it seems like as usual, our road crews were right on top of doing a good job keeping the roads passable. I’m amazed how well the roads are maintained here in Vermont—I’m serious. I say I’m serious cause I know lots of folks that think the direct opposite. Those folks might be surprised to know how much work the state puts into keeping us safe. That night, tons of salt had been spread over the roads including right over the accident site, and just before the crash, leaving the road a reported “wet” not slick. Temperatures fluctuate in an instant, but records show the crash area at the time was above freezing, while surrounding areas were in the more acutely dangerous temperature zone. I read that certain trouble areas
have sensors that report electronically back to a hub where 24hour on-duty professionals decide on the best ways to attack and cure dangerous conditions. Vermont road crews are diligent and they work tirelessly. Taking into account Mother Nature as their opponent, they do a fantastic job. The day after the crash the local T.V. news crew produced a story about a gal who’d been off the road at the same spot a year before. The talking head said “she relived her accident after driving past the recent crash site.” The story centered around an idea of reshaping the road in the hope of eliminating future mishaps. A state police trooper also interviewed stated the locale is a “perfect storm” of bad personality regarding drivability. It has an incline, a curve, and rock ledges—plus it’s just before a bridge. A nasty spot, no doubt. I wondered if the news story was for the sake of needing a story line or if there was any chance the road would be changed to improve safety? I’ve driven over the danger spot hundreds, if not thousands, of times over several decades. Everyday, for a year, my nearly 80-year-old mother drove through that exact spot on her way to visit my dad in the nursing home. A women I know shared with me her story of having driven, for 25 years, to work over that same deadly spot. She navigates 50 miles of Interstate highway five days a week. None of us have gone off the interstate—yet. Go ahead government, hand hold the hell out of us. Change every challenging spot on our interstate highway to affect a more passable line—making it on paper a little safer. While you’re at it, buckle us in, take our cell phones away, road test us every year, make us run winter tires, change the drinking age to 31, lower the speed limit to 30, and allow kids under age 20 to drive only when accompanied by a driver ed-teaching Sisters of Mercy nun with no less than a 40-year record of safe driving. Go ahead, make all those draconian changes Big Brother government, then sit back and watch—we’ll still drive the heck off Vermont roads in the winter.
