We wish them the best of luck as they pursue their PLATTSBURGH new college football careers. Who will be the 2017 HORNETS Players of the Year? It will be exciting to watch the games and find out which outstanding North Country football players will rise to the top. The 2017 sectional makeup is the same as last year, Beekmantown, Peru and Plattsburgh comprise the Class B division, AuSable Valley, Saranac Central and Saranac Lake comprise the Class C division and Moriah and Ticonderoga in the Class D division. We will finish the season with an exciting championship weekend on October 27-28, 2017, at the AuSable SARANAC LAKE Valley Athletic Complex. The Class B & D Section RED STORM VII-X Super Bowls will be hosted by Section VII the following weekend. Finally, none of the greatness that makes high school football so special in the North Country is possible without you, the fans! We have eight great football communities who love their high school football and come out each Friday night or Saturday afternoon and cheer the kids on. It is your support and patronage that makes North Country football so special. We thank you for that support and TICONDEROGA SENTINELS encourage you all to come out and see the games. Enjoy the 2017 football season, appreciate and respect all the hard work the players and coaches put in and please be a respectful and supportive fan.

“We always want to say that we are reloading for the new season,” said coach Ed McCallister. “The kids have been working hard in practice and we have had a good offseason program.” Leading the team will be quarterback Dalton McDonald, now in his third season as a starter. “He brings a lot to the team and as long as we can keep him healthy, I think he can do some special things to help us in games,” McCallister said. “His leadership will be a key this year.”

Also bringing experience to the lineup will be back Matt Pray and back/lineman Chance Lapier. “Those three are kids that came up with us three years ago and now have developed into the leaders of this team,” McCallister said. “Matty can do some special things with the ball and Chance is a great leader and defender.” McCallister said he hopes the team will continue to improve throughout the year, remain competitive in games and focus on growing. “If our line can do what we expect them to do, we should be able to compete,” he said. ■

EAGLES SEEK CLASS B CROWN By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

BEEKMANTOWN | Coming off a

7-2 season with bookend defeats, the Beekmantown varsity football program wants to get back on top in Section VII/Class B. The Eagles placed second last year in CVAC competition with a 6-1 record, only falling to Ticonderoga in the season opener. The team rattled off seven straight wins after that, including a crossover win against Massena,

before falling to Peru in the Class B title game. This year, the Eagles are ready to soar again, thanks to a wealth of students athletes and a veteran coming back under center.

Dominick Bordeau returns to the Eagles at quarterback and will be joined in the backfield by running back Cris Arzola. Outside, however, will feature some players stepping up into bigger roles, as Christian Moura, Evan BUrnell, Jaden Maldanado, Brandon Belorse and others will have to contribute to the offense. Maldanado and Trudeau will anchor the linebacking core on defense, while lineman Ryan Bone, Chase Sawyer and others will have to move the line up front. â–

PORT HENRY | Despite what you may have

“We also return our top two receivers from last in Connor Anderson and Ryan Flack,” said Tesar.

As the school comes off a year where they won a state championship in basketball, the Viking boys of fall are ready to return the Section VII/ Class D title to where they believe it rightfully belongs, and they are bringing a core of experienced players to help them overcome rival Ticonderoga come late October.

Dewey Snyder, Ryan Flack and Jerin Sargent are also players who will look to make an impact for the Vikings this season.

heard, Moriah is still in the heart of football country,

“We return 16 players from last year’s team with nine starters on the offensive and defensive side of the ball,” Moriah coach Don Tesar said. He’s also bringing some depth, as well. “We have 31 players on this year’s roster so we have team depth,” he said. Up front will be a key for the Vikings, as they return four of their linemen, including Mike Rollins, Alex Larrow, Derek Manfred and Jacob Gibeau. They will set up the running and throwing game led by senior quarterback Dylan Trombley, who threw for over 1,000 yards last season.

Published by Sun Community News & Printing

While the Vikings are set for the season, they know it all comes down to the Class D title game between the red and purple. “Every team wants to win their section and advance in the state playoffs and eventually the state championship in Syracuse,” Tesar said. “It is not an easy road and its hard enough to get out of our section. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication. Our year will be a success if we are able to run and throw the ball consistently and not be one dimensional. Defensively we have to be aggressive and communicate with each other.” For now, the team is focused on preparing for game one. “We are getting prepared and ready in short period of time.,” he said. “Leadership from all the returners is important in getting all the underclassmen prepared for the season.” ■

TEEN CONCUSSION

A PARENTS GUIDE Right now, what may seem like “overkill” will help ensure that your teen has the best chance to heal and rejoin the team safely. After all we all want what’s best for our kids both today and for a lifetime.

S

ports should be an integral part of the life of every teen. It teaches teambuilding, sportsmanship and dedication. However, concussions are sometimes the unwanted result of sports participation.

A concussion may also be referred to as a “head injury” or “mild traumatic brain injury”. A concussion is not a bruise to the brain; it’s an interruption of how the brain works. A concussion results when the athlete is strongly bumped or jolted causing the brain to move or twist inside the skull. Only 10% of concussions result in the athlete losing consciousness. Anyone can get a concussion, however, the fact that they are still growing makes it that much easier for children and teens to experience brain movement. In most cases, hits to the head do not result in a concussion. That is because the brain is protected by the skull; a very hard covering made of bone that works like a helmet. Hit hard enough, such as a high impact helmet to helmet hit, the brain can be shaken around inside the skull causing a concussion. Concussions and other brain injuries are fairly common. About every 21 seconds, someone in the United States has a serious brain injury. One of the most common reasons teens get concussions is through a sports injury. Contact sports such as football, pose a higher risk of head injury, even with the use of protective headgear. According to the Institute of Medicine, high school football players are nearly twice as likely to get concussions as college counterparts or high school athletes playing other sports; as many as 20 percent of athletes who get a concussion have symptoms that linger more than two weeks. What can I as a parent do?...As parents we must be the advocate for our teen athletes. Too many times everyone is caught up in the excitement of the game and the athlete will try to “tough it out”. This can result in the athlete suffering what is called Second Impact Syndrome. This is when an athlete suffers a second concussion before the first one has had time to

THESE SIGNS INCLUDE: Physical

• Lack of energy, slow-moving

• Headaches

• Blurry or double vision

• Fatigue, seeming tired, trouble staying awake

• Sensitivity to noise or light

• Trouble sleeping

If your child suffers a concussion; Your child should not do any activity in which your child might hit or jolt the head, until cleared by a qualified physician.

heal. To be a victim of Second Impact Syndrome the athlete doesn’t even have to be hit very hard. The brain is already vulnerable so even a sight hit to the head or even the chest can result in uncontrollable swelling of the brain, very often resulting in long term disability or even death. It’s important to recognize the signs of a concussion and help the teen understand that going back too soon could have lifelong consequences.

IF YOU THINK YOUR CHILD MIGHT HAVE A CONCUSSION IMMEDIATELY CONSULT A PHYSICIAN

trained in spotting and treating concussions. Some good websites to visit that might help both of you understand the severity of the event. kidshealth.org/teen/safety/first_aid/concussions, talks to teens about what to expect, or heads up parents.org has video interviews with teens describing their experience with concussion; click on the resources tab.

Healing time for a concussion should not be hurried. Along with sitting out a few games and practices probably the hardest part of a concussion for your teen will be, “No video games, no texting, no using the computer, and no watching TV,” says Tracey Covassin, PhD, an athletic trainer and concussion expert at Michigan State University. Even though games, texting, and watching TV seem simple, your teens’ brain has to work to keep track of what’s happening on the screen. These activities should be avoided for about 7-10 days, in most cases. Of course, your doctor has the last word on exactly how much time you need. Depending on the severity of the concussion your teen may experience difficulty with school work and maintaining the busy schedule teens keep. It may be necessary to miss or curtail school for a few days; again your physician and your teen will help you make these decisions. As long as your child is having any symptoms caused by the concussion, it will be very important to prevent Second Concussion Syndrome (see below).

Thinking (Cognitive)

Emotional and Behavioral

• Not remembering how the concussion happened

• Becoming easily annoyed or angry, seeming cranky and irritable

• Becoming easily confused

• Feeling worried or nervous

• Slowness in thinking, seeming “foggy” or “zoned out”

• Seeming emotional, crying more easily than normal

• Difficulty paying attention

• Not seeming like himself/herself, personality changes

• Forgetfulness, memory problems • More difficulty at school than normal

Published by Sun Community News & Printing

My child has been diagnosed with a concussion…Now What? Be alert for symptoms that worsen. In the first 1-2 days after the injury, you should watch your child very carefully. You know your child; you should get immediate medical help if your child: • Loses consciousness

• Is very confused

• Is extremely sleepy or drowsy and can’t be awakened

• Has trouble talking or slurred speech

• Vomits repeatedly

• Has a seizure (arms or legs shake uncontrollably)

• Gets a headache that worsens, lasts for a long time, or is severe • Has weakness, numbness, trouble walking, or decreased coordination • Has difficulty recognizing familiar people

• Cries nonstop and cannot be comforted • Has any other sudden or unusual change in thinking or behavior Resources: WebMD, Concussion in Children and teenagers: information for Parents and other Caregivers (2006), by Michael W. PERU | Midway through the 2016 season, the Peru varsity football team threw the switch.

After defeating Ticonderoga for its lone loss of the regular season, the Indians then went on to claim the Class B title with a win over Beekmantown. For 2017, the Indians hope they can start the momentum earlier and keep it going through the playoffs. “Our strength will be our young athletic players,” coach Ryon O’Connell said. “We will build on our speed and quickness throughout the year. Our team goal is to get better every day and hope we can compete in the playoffs.” O’Connell said there are a few players he will look to in order to help lead the team.

“Ryley O’Connell returns as the starting QB and performed much better in the second half of the season,” O’Connell said. “Jordan Hayes returns as a two-way starter on the line, Robert Reynolds returns as a receiver and middle linebacker, while Matt Latinville returns on the lines.” Competition will be a key in each practice for the team, to get the prepared for the nine week CVAC season which ends in Clintonville. “We need to compete every day in practice against each other and focus on our individual assignments and team goals,” O’Connell said. “We need to come together as one cohesive unit and keep improving each day. Our year will be a success if we can learn quickly (very few seniors) and our younger players grow throughout the season.” ■

PHS AIMS TO COMPETE IN CLASS B By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

PLATTSBURGH | With a rifleman arm and size of a linebacker, it’s hard to take down Mitch Senecal.

Senecal, who begins his third season under center for the Plattsburgh High School varsity Hornets, will be called on to lead a team under the direction of Pat Keleher. “We have great senior leadership, and QB Mitch Senecal is a three-year starter, with great experience at skill positions, good numbers and great competition every day at practice,” Keleher said. The key for the Hornets on defense will be in the defensive backfield, as the

line will be in the process of growing and improving as the season begins. “We have good experience back in defensive backfield and linebacker,” Keleher said. “We will be younger and less experienced on the offensive and defensive lines.” As the team grows, Keleher wants them to work towards the ultimate sectional goal. “As always, our goal is to win the Class B title, be competitive and have a winning season,” he said. “Finding successful player combinations on the offensive and defensive lines and getting

those units to play well will be a key. Getting the juniors and sophomores who moved up, up to the speed of the varsity game will also be key.” Along with Senecal, Talon Bushey, Jason Moore, Seth Atwood, Aidan Stone, Brandon Fox and Tim Varano will be looked at for team leadership. ■

EXPERIENCED CHIEFS READY FOR NEXT CHAPTER

By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

SARANAC | With a lineup featuring 16 players returning from the 2016 squad, the Saranac varsity football team is looking to complete a full turn around from two seasons ago as they seek the Class C crown.

“We want to win a Section VII championship and continue onto the state playoffs,” head coach Joe Fish said. “We are going to continue to improve each week and to hold each other accountable for success. We want them to be perfect in practice so they can win and live up to the expectations placed on them.”

Published by Sun Community News & Printing

Working to meet their goals, the Chiefs will work as hard as they can in the preseason to get to AuSable Valley at the end of October.

“We are going to increase the intensity and competitiveness at practice, set high standards and expectations as a team and have a commitment to success,” Fish said. “We have senior leadership which has a team-first mentality. They have good team chemistry and are driven to win.”

Three members of the front seven return on defense with Johnny Devins in the middle of the linebacking core with outside backers Jake Nolan and Keegan Wood also returning. Devins and Wood will see time in the backfield on offense, while Nolan will be outside as a receiver. Tight end Isaac Garmin also returns, while the front lines look to be bolstered by newcomers Casey Breyette and Sam Robinson. ■

Jacob LeDuc returns to anchor the offensive line for the Chiefs, snapping the ball to returning quarterback Luke Maye.

SEEKING TO KEEP HANDS ON CLASS C TITLE By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

SARANAC LAKE | When you cannot

get into the backfield, a defense will have a hard time stopping an offense. The same is true on the other side of the ball — when you are getting into their backfield all day, the other team is not going to be going anywhere quickly. With captains Fox Thurston and Sean Lincoln anchoring the lines, the Saranac Lake varsity football team feels that they have a strong front which will be a force against anyone they play.

“Our line and sense of team is going to be the strength for us this year,” coach Eric Bennett said. “We want to get better every day and compete for a championship.” Lincoln — who impressed many last season in his first year ever as a football player — and Thurston will clear the way for returning back Jarrett Ashton, who will also anchor the linebacking core as one of the top tacklers from 2016.

DJ Morgan will look to take the reigns

46 \\ Section VII Football Preview \\ 2017

of the offense this season from the shotgun, as returning targets Emery Swanson and Ward Walton will look to add to their receiving totals. “Our year will be a success if we play to our potential,” Bennett said. ■

TI EYES CLASS D THREE-PEAT

By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

TICONDEROGA | The Ticonderoga varsity football team has held the edge over their Class D rival for the past two years in late October. While losing several key players to graduation, the Sentinels will look to stay atop the sectional and league standings with the help of a pair of returning players. “Having a third-year quarterback in Evan Graney and a third-year linebacker in Jevyn Granger to lead the offensive and defensive sides of the ball is a strength for this squad,” head coach Scott Nephew said. “We have a handful of three year varsity players that will provide solid leadership for the many varsity newcomers on this year’s team.” Along with Graney and Granger, the Sentinels also return linebacker Hayden Scuderi, who had a solid season in 2016 after breaking onto the scene in the Sentinels state championship run two years ago.

50 \\ Section VII Football Preview \\ 2017

Michael DuShane returns to play tight end and on the defensive line, while Trevor Parent returns as a running back and linebacker. The team also returns a pair of linemen in Sawyer Veneto and Brandin Plumadore. “Our goals, as always, are to get better everyday, focus on everyday, working toward the game of the week,” Nephew said. “We need to be playing our best football week nine against what will be a very good Moriah football team. Nephew said as the teams rounds into form, the more he looks forward to their progression as a Sentinel squad. “We need to have players step up into their roles on the team and stay focused on us, not any outside factors,” Nephew said. “We need to stay focused on Ticonderoga Football, and the things that we need to do as a football team.” ■
