Pee Wee Football - 3
Northern Adirondack youth football flourishing By Thom Randall
thom@denpubs.com Now in its action-packed 14th year, the Northern Adirondack Youth Football League is carrying on a proud tradition of developing athletic skills and sportsmanship.
Glens Falls youth football
The Glens Falls youth football program, sponsored for 16 years by the Glens Falls Police Athletic League and several primary individual donors, has enjoyed a proud tradition of victorious seasons as well as building character and preparing the young athletes for success in life. In 2013, the Glens Falls senior youth team tallied an enviable record of five wins and one loss, and that loss was a close one: 6-8 against Lake George, long-time coach Bob Rizzo said. Ò It was a great season and the boys developed into good football players,Ó he said. The Glens Falls PAL program was coached by Tom Center, Roscoe Jackson, Rick Stafford, Jeff Ashe and Bob Rizzo. This year the team was led by quarterbacks David Barclay and Hunter Montgomery. The Indians had a host of backs including Hogan Fox, Cooper Montgomery, Aalijah Sampson, Kevin Quirk, Carter Jackson, Jamal Rawlings and Unique Steele. The line was anchored by Hunter Nichols-Suttle, Holden Lamountain, Jacob Davis, and Aiden Lafond. Nick Danahay was the teamÕ s Ò go-toÓ tight end along with J.T. Lapham, Rizzo said. Ò The defense used a plethora of players for total team effort every game,Ó Rizzo added, noting that the Glens Falls league has focused on three Fs: fun football, family, and fundamentals.
Ft. Edward: nurturing excellence
The Fort Edward football program also has a proud, successful tradition of achievement as well as victorious seasons. Both the senior and junior teams have won plenty of championships since the very year they joined the Northern Adirondack Youth Football League in 2008. Key to their success have been the coaches, who have included Kevin Stimpson, David Regner, Eric Smatko, Mike Sullivan and Shawn Rivers. In Fort Edward, the senior team is coached by Desi Lyons and the junior squad is coached by Mike Sullivan. Local football league president Charlie Pidgeon said that the program prepares the youngsters well for high school gridiron play. Despite their strings of victories through the years, Pidgeon said that skill development was most important. Ò ItÕ s not all about winning Ñ itÕ s really about playing and having fun,Ó he said, adding that his league is very conscious of preventing head injuries. He also noted that the team spirit is remarkable, and it’s exemplified by the squad
of cheerleaders that pump up the crowd with their halftime routines. Ò Win or lose, when those kids come off the field and feel good about how they’ve played, thatÕ s the point,Ó he said. Pidgeon continued that the children have also shown enthusiasm over community service Ñ the players and cheerleaders recently raised $350 for cancer prevention and research.
Whitehall: a ‘football town’
Since the 1930s, Whitehall has been renowned for their football, and that reputation has spurred local youngsters to invest a lot of time and energy into the sport. For 2013, WhitehallÕ s 5th and 6th grade team was coached by Fred Gonyea, assisted by Dick Gould, Ray Lymon, and Jeremy Purtorti. This senior team was blessed with substantial player size, so they were able to out-muscle many of their opponents. They also showed a dedication to learn the plays and develop their skills, the coaches said. Because most all of the players were fifth graders, theyÕ ll be returning next year Ñ and their fans expect them to be enjoying a victorious season in 2014. WhitehallÕ s 3rd and 4th squad was coached by Jared Eggleston, assisted by Jamie Brooks and Charlie Jones. Their team has relatively small players, but they were fast on their feet and quick to respond when the ball was snapped, keeping opponents on their toes, Eggleston said. Ò At times they were overwhelmed in size by the other teams, but they worked hard Ñ they had a lot of heart,Ó he said. Ò They were enthusiastic, learned a lot and were competitive.Ó
Ti upholds proud tradition
In Ticonderoga, the fifth and sixth grade team was coached by Chris Thompson, assisted by Darryl McKeown and Dayton Dedrick. The 3rd and 4th grade team was coached by Terry Benedict, assisted by Russ Gallo, Bob Porter, Mark Belden, and Pete Borho. The junior squad enjoyed a stellar year. Through the first week of October, the team tallied at least 50 points each game, and they were coasting on a 5-0 record, Coach Benedict said. Ò ItÕ s a great group of kids,Ó he said. Ò TheyÕ re very energetic and knowledgeable.Ó Leading offensive player is T.J. Bilow, who scored 25 touchdowns in 2013, the coach said. Ò HeÕ s one of the leagueÕ s fastest players and he runs like a deer at full speed, bouncing from side to side, evading defenders,Ó Benedict said. Ò HeÕ s an amazing talent.Ó The quarterback is 4th grader Monty Benedict, who has the ability to roll outside and make split decisions about either throwing the ball, or running with it. TiconderogaÕ s senior team has solid talent and its players have developed good skills this year, the coach said. Since the team has only 16 players, theyÕ ve been working both sides of the ball, coach Benedict said.
Ò Those guys gave 110 percent,Ó Ò They never give up.Ó
he said.
Corinth — legacy of champs
For decades, Corinth has produced strong, able football players that have the determination and athleticism one would expect from a mill town. The Corinth youth football program reflects this tradition, and it is celebrating its 18th season this year. One of Corinth’s long-time coaches, Dan Lescault, co-founded the Northern Adirondack Youth Football League in 2000 along with Terry Bruno of Lake George. In the last dozen years, both their junior and senior teams have won a substantial number of championships, which attests to the coaching expertise as well as the youngstersÕ dedication to the sport. Corinth has one team comprised of 5th and 6th graders. Coaching this senior squad is head coach John Peschieri, assisted by Rick Watkins, Coach Fuss, and Brian Dumas. The team has a solid roster of 30 players, and in 2013, theyÕ ve learned a lot of new formations and plays, providing a good foundation for their high school years. The coaches emphasize sportsmanship, rotating all the players into the action on the field. Leading player Johnny Ò RocketÓ Frazier was injured in pre-season, so filling his role with considerable success were Dylan Dumas, Michael Fuss and Hayden Bush. A good deal of the credit, Peschieri said, goes to the line. Ò Without them, we would never have achieved the success we did,Ó he said, noting the season win-loss record as of Oct. 12 was 5-1. The team also has two talented quarterbacks Ñ Chad Harris who gains substantial ground yardage, and Colin Watkins, a traditional playmaker with a good arm. The team has a deep roster of 6th graders, whoÕ ve playing together for four years, plus a lot of rookies who earned starting positions on defense due to their tackling abilities, Peschieri said. Ò This is our best season ever with this group of kids,Ó he said. Ò Their camaraderie has taken them a long way.Ó
Lake George is football strong
For over a generation, Lake George High School has enjoyed a dominant football team Ñ and many sports enthusiasts give much of the credit to the youth football program conducted by the town youth commission. Ted Bearor, coach of Lake GeorgeÕ s 5th and 6th grade team, said both the junior and senior squads enjoyed a safe and successful season in 2013. In each practice, the coaches stressed the importance of football fundamentals and safety, with a Ò heads upÓ approach to avoid potential player injury and CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

concussion awareness, he said. Practices were geared towards proper tackling techniques as well as ball handling and skill development. The games played against opponents were hard matches, particularly against Warrensburg, Glens Falls, Whitehall and Corinth. The Lake George senior team focused on a balanced offensive approach, utilizing the backfield player speed and throwing experience at quarterback. The offensive line and tight ends did an outstanding job creating holes and making blocks down field enabling scoring opportunities throughout the games, he said. Also, great defensive line play and defensive end play enabled the linebackers to fill holes, as well as stop plays and force turnovers at the point of attack. In the secondary, the cornerbacks and safety protected against the deep play and stopped many outside big runs and passes. The Lake George coaching staff, parents, fans and players are pleased with the season and look forward to the future of the program.

Warrensburg teams stress skills, sportsmanship
Warrensburg has hosted youth football for more than a decade, and it’s flourished with dedicated coaches and lots of support from parents, all of whom want to see skills and sportsmanship developed in the elementary years. The Warrensburg Youth Football League has a senior 5th and 6th grade squad, a 3rd and 4th grade team and a flag football team of primary-age players. The senior squad is coached by Gary Baker, assisted by Joe Sutphin and Pat Powers. Mike Curtis, who has served as an assistant coach for the Warrensburg High School Varsity Football is coach of the 3rd and 4th grade squad. He has been assisted by Dan DeMarsh, Kori Olden, and Brian Winchell. With a goal of developing sportsmanship and basic skills, they have mentored the junior Burgher youth team, which has played with a lot of effort and heart this season as well as prior years. Baker said that his 2013 senior squad is talented and athletic, as are the other teams in the Northern Adirondack Youth League. “Over the years, I’ve had tough, strong and fast kids — but this perhaps the smartest group IÕ ve ever had,Ó he said. Ò They Ô getÕ the game, listen carefully and take in what you are saying Ñ they take it to heart and believe in it.Ó Baker said that all parents and youth sports fans, whether in Warrensburg or the other area communities, deserve praise for supporting a football league that develops vital character traits in youth: teamwork, dedication and high standards of conduct Ñ attributes that will serve them well throughout their lives.
