Ti cagers optimistic about 2013-14 season Sentinels return 10 players

fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA Ñ This could be a banner season for the Ticonderoga boys basketball team. The Sentinels return 10 players Ñ including all their statistical leaders Ñ to a club that posted a 10-9 record a year ago. Anthony DuShane, who led Ti in scoring and rebounding in 2012-13, returns to lead a veteran front court. DuShane scored 10.2 points and grabbed 8 rebounds a game last winter. Also returning to the forward line are Keegan Tierney, Matt Cook and Eric Nielsen. TheyÕ re joined by rookie Caleb Wiktorko. Mike Graney, Ty Denno, Mark Donohue, Dave Bevins, Garrison Hughes and Zeshan Afzal return to the Ti back court. Graney scored 8.7 points a game last season, while Denno added 8.3 points a contest. Denno also led the Sentinels in assists with 3 a game. TheyÕ re joined at guard by newcomers Marick Ross and Quentin Austin. Leading the tam is Coach Joe Defayette. HeÕ s assisted by Rick Merrill, Eric Mullen and Andy Kuhl. Ticonderoga finds itself in a new league this winter. Ti ladies eye success in new conference

fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA Ñ A new league gives Ticonderoga girls basketball fans new hope. Ticonderoga finds itself in a new league this winter. After years in the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference, the Sentinels are now members of the new Northern Basketball League. They will play in Division II with Chazy, lake Placid, Moriah, Willsboro, Seton Westport and Elizabethtown-Lewis. Ò This season we will be playing in a new league, the Northern Basketball League,Ó Coach Shelly Young said. Ò I believe that we can be more competitive in this new alignment. Ò This is a team that works well together and has the motivation to be successful,Ó she said. The Sentinels are an experienced crew this winter. They return six seniors and three juniors to the roster. Leading the Ti cagers will be seniors Kylie Austin, Maura Jebb, Sadie Hamel, Logan Mars, McKenna Kelly and Tiffani Purkey. Rounding out the club are juniors Lexi Moore, Nicole Fuller and Paige Gunning. Ò Kylie Austin, one of six seniors returning will lead the Sentinels,Ó Young said. Ò Kylie is very athletic and a leader to her teammates. She will be helped in the post position by McKenna Kelly, Sadie Hamel and newcomer Paige Gunning. Ò In the guard position we will need to replace last yearÕ s lead-

ing scorer, Andrea Rich,Ó the coach said. Ò Tiffani Purkey, Lexi Moore and Maura Jebb will round out the guards. All have been working hard to improve their ball handling skills. Ò Also joining the Sentinels this year is Nicole Fuller,Ó Young said. Ò Nicole will join with Logan Mars as versatile players that can play at both the guard and forward position.Ó Assisting Young with the coaching chores this winter are Tina Russell and Kathy Tubbs.

fred@denpubs.com CROWN POINT Ñ Crown Point boys basketball fans will need a program to identify players this season. The Panther line up will be filled with new faces. Only four players return from last seasonÕ s 12-5 club. Even the coach is new. Randy Pertak is now on the bench. Ò The team lost a majority of its key players,Ó Pertak said. Ò This yearÕ s team lacks experience and size, but has some very athletic players to fill in.” Returning to the roster are Jaice Spring, Joe Foote, Jordan McIntosh and Noah Macey. Ò The team returns only one starter, Jaice Spring, from last yearÕ s squad,Ó Pertak said. Ò Joe Foote is also a returning player that saw playing time throughout the year. Jordan McIntosh and Noah Macey also saw time at the varsity level last year.Ó New to the Panther roster are Kolby Pertak, Jamie LaDeau, Chad Stephens, Jake Mildon, Luke Finamore, Judd DeBrobander, Chance Potter and Lucas Ramon. Ò A majority of the team will be made-up of last yearÕ s JV players moving up,Ó Pertak said. Ò Newcomers to this yearÕ s team are Luke Finamore, Jake Mildon, Lucas Ramon, Kolby Pertak, Judd DeBrobander, Chad Stephens, Chance Potter and Jamie LaDeau. Ò The keys to our success are going to be able to play tough defense and rebounding,Ó the coach said. Ò Jaice Spring will have to handle the ball and be a floor leader. Joe Foote will be expected to be tough down low and help control the boards. All of our younger players will be expected to step-up and be role players.Ó Assisting Pertak with the coaching duties will be Will Gun-

nison. And thereÕ s yet another change for the Panthers this season. Crown Point, a member of the Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference for decades, is now aligned with the new Northern Basketball League. Ò The Lady Panthers are looking forward to an exciting basketball season this year,Ó Coach Kevin Peters said. Ò They know with a young team comes challenges, but with challenges come opportunities. The main focus this year is for the young ladies to

develop good habits both on offense and defense. The ladies are working hard this preseason to reinforce these good habits and to turn them into scoring opportunities.Ó Crown Point was 5-10 last season. “The season was a reflection of hard work and spirit led by seniors Courtney Meachem, Alex Macy, Ellen Kiley, Micheala Comes, and Tasha Hay,Ó Peters said. Ò Their friendship and dedication to being great teammates will be missed.Ó The Panthers will look to senior center Amanda Wolf and junior guard Heather Ryan to lead the club this winter. Ò Our captain, Amanda, will have the task of playing several

rolls this year,Ó Peters said. Ò A strong presence in the paint is her strength, but she will be asked to come away from the hoop at times, which she is getting stronger at each practice. Heather, one of our shooting guards, is quick to the ball and continues to develop a nice outside shot.Ó Joining Ryan in the back court will be Logan Harrington, Brittany Foote, MacKenzie Bertsche and Bridget Crowningshield. Lady Vikings get new head coach

fred@denpubs.com PORT HENRY Ñ The Moriah girls basketball team will have a new face on the bench this winter. Erica Tesar is the new head coach, taking the reins from long-time mentor Steve Pelkey. “This is my first year as head coach and I’m excited to work with this group of girls,Ó Tesar said. Ò They are a talented group and I expect them to do well. They are an experienced bunch that works hard.Ó Tom Olcott will assist Tesar on the pine. The Vikings are coming off back-to-back successful campaigns. They won the Section VII Class C championship two seasons ago and advanced to the Section VII Class D title game in 2012-13. The Vikings were 11-10 overall in 2012-13. Madison Stahl returns after a strong season last winter to man the center position. Stahl,

a junior, led the Vikings in scoring with 11.7 points a contest. She recorded 14 double-doubles last season and was named a Champlain Valley Athletic Conference all star. Taylor Sprague, Sarah Slattery and Lauren Brace, key contributors in MoriahÕ s run to the title game last season, are back at forward. TheyÕ re joined by Shelby MacDougal. Sprague was MoriahÕ s leading rebounder last season. In the back court the Vikings will line up veterans Caitlin Pelkey, Lauren Cross and Halie Snyder along with Jordan Speshock, Sami Ida and Courtney Birch. ThereÕ s another big change for Moriah this season. After decades of playing in the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference, the Vikings will suit up in the new Northern Basketball League Division II in 2013-14. Joining the Vikings in Division II are Ticonderoga, Chazy, Lake Placid, Willsboro, Seton Catholic, Westport and Elizabethtown-Lewis.

Pratt are expected to lead the Vikings in 201314. Pratt led Moriah with 10 points and Jaquish added nine points, five rebounds and three blocked shots in the section title match with Schroon Lake a year ago. Joining Pratt in the back court this winter will be Chris Clarke, Dylan Blaise, Bill Larrow and Sam Russo. McKiernan returns at forward where heÕ ll lead rookies Hayden Fernandez, Noah Gilbo, Taylor Slattery, Jarrod MacDougal, Kyle VanBuren and Ryan Jaquish. “We’re a very young team — five sophomores Ñ and only three players return from last year,Ó Cross said. Ò We do have good size.Ó The Vikings were 12-11 overall and 6-8 in the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference last season. In 2013-14 the Vikings will move to the new Northern Basketball Conference, where theyÕ ll play in Division II with Ticonderoga, Elizabethtown-Lewis, Chazy, Lake Placid, Willsboro, Seton Catholic and Westport. Assisting Cross on the bench this season will be Don Tesar and Randy Mandy.

Vikings get late start on hoop season

fred@denpubs.com PORT HENRY Ñ ThereÕ s good news and bad news for the Moriah boys basketball team as they enter the 2013-14 campaign. The good news is the Vikings have such gifted athletes, 11 members of the hoop squad were part of the football team that reached the state semifinals. The bad news is that they were playing football until Nov. 22, which means basketball practice at Moriah started two weeks after other schools. Ò WeÕ ll be behind other teams at the beginning of the season due to the great season of the football team,Ó Coach Brian Cross said. Ò Eleven of our 13 players were on the football team.Ó Cross expects his cagers to catch up quickly, though, as they defend the Section VII Class D championship they won last winter. Wildcats have tough act to follow this season Seven cagers return from 2013 squad By Fred Herbst

fred@denpubs.com SCHROON LAKE Ñ The Schroon Lake boys basketball team is about to find out about life after Jesse Shaughnessy. Shaughnessy, arguably the best player in the section last season, has moved on and is playing this winter at Clinton Community College. Gone are his 19.7 points, 4.4 assists and 3.9 steals a game Ñ all tops on the Wildcat squad in 2012-13. He was the Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference most valuable player and was named to the all-state squad. Also missing from last seasonÕ s 20-1 Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference championship team is Jeff Armstrong, who led the Ô Cats in rebounding with 9.2 caroms a contest. ThatÕ s the bad news for Schroon Lake fans. The good news Ñ seven players return, most of who saw meaningful playing time as the Wildcats tore through the conference last winter. Caleb Maisonville, Bryce Vallie, Alex Shaughnessy, Tanner Stone, Eric Paradis, Justin Lough and Joe Maisonville return to the Schroon roster. Rounding out the club is rookie Braden Hall. Ò I have no doubt that returning starters Tanner (stone) and Alex (Shaughnessy) along with new starters Joe Maisonville, Caleb Maisonville and Bryce Vallie will be able to fill in and have a great season,Ó Coach Lee Silvernail said. Ò Justin Lough and Eric Paradis will be key for us coming off the bench along with freshman Branden Hall.Ó Besides new faces, there will be other changes. The Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference no longer exists in basketball. Instead, Schroon Lake will play in the new Northern Basketball League Division III along with Crown Point, Indian Lake-Long

Lake, Johnsburg, Keene, Minerva-Newcomb and Wells. Silvernail hopes his Wildcats can force play with pressure defense and a quick-paced offense. Ò We have been working hard and getting into good shape so that we can play a fast-pace, up-tempo style to wear our opponents out,Ó the coach said. Ò This is a great group of guys who have worked hard in the off season and I look forward to the upcoming season.Ó

Veteran leadership key to Lady Wildcat season

fred@denpubs.com SCHROON LAKE Ñ The Schroon Lake girls basketball team boasts some experience this season. The Wildcats return six players and have a veteran presence at every position on the floor. Abigail Veverka and Alexis Subra return at guard. TheyÕ re joined in the back court by rookie Julianna Finnerty. Molly Wisser gives the Ô Cats experience in the pivot. Dakota Gadway, Shannon Garland and Desiree Lanoue return at forward. Newcomers Amanda Jones and Gabriella DosSantos round out the front court. Also new to the team is the coaching staff. Mark Davenport is the head coach, assisted by Lyle Hartwell and Terry Wisser. Ò The Schroon Lake Central School Wildcats are returning six girls who saw action last season and their leadership will be the key to their success,Ó Davenport said. Ò Running the point will be veteran Abby Veverka with help from freshman Juliana Finnerty. Guard play will be anchored by senior Lexi Subra and juniors Amanda James and Dakota Gadway. Ò James and Gadway will also see action under the boards with seniors Shannon Garland, Desiree Lanoue and junior exchange student Gabriella DosSantos,Ó he said. Ò Rounding out the squad is returning junior Molly Wisser, who adds great defense and scoring from the center position and attacking forward.Ó Schroon Lake has a new home this season. Cougars seek to continue last season’s momentum

thom@denpubs.com CHESTERTOWN Ñ Last year, with an explosive offense and tenacious defense, the North Warren Boys Basketball team exceeded expectations for a school with such small enrollment Ñ they captured second place in the Adirondack league Western Division with an 11-5 record, second only to Lake George, who eventually were crowned State Champions. New coach Jeremy Whipple said this week that despite the loss of three talented athletes to graduation, a solid group of players are returning. The coaches, fans and players all have high expectations for the upcoming year. Whipple said this week the projected starting lineup features Nick Sapienza as point guard; Justice Parker as forward; Dan Hill, forward, Jacob Dunkley, center; Dan Hill, forward, and Iain Underwood, guard. The offense is likely to be spearheaded by Nick Sapienza who was leading scorer in 2012-13 as a sophomore, Whipple said. Ò Nick will have to continue to carry the scoring load and learn to lead on defense as well,Ó Whipple said. The coach said he also has high expectations for Iain Underwood. Ò Iain will have to become more of a contributor on offense Ñ and his quickness should cause other teams problems on defense,Ó Whipple said. The coach said Justice Parker will also undoubtedly be a key player. Ò Parker is a great distributor of the basketball, but heÕ ll have to step up on defense and battle bigger players down low,Ó he said. Continuing his analysis of the upcoming year, Whipple pre-

dicted that Jacob Dunkley will be a leader offensively. Ò Jacob has the potential to put up 10 to 15 points per night, and weÕ d like to see 10 to 15 rebounds as well,Ó the coach said. The teamÕ s continued hard work and dedication will produce success, Whipple said. Ò The kids have been working very hard in both the off-season and pre-season Ñ and expectations are high,Ó he said. Ò We are going to have to play solid defense and rebound well in order to be competitive.Ó

Warriors short on experience but toughening up for season LAKE GEORGE Ñ Last week, the players on the Lake George Varsity Girls Basketball team were late for a team photo, as they spent extra time lifting weights. Although the Warriors won the Adirondack League Western Division title last year and tallied a 13-6 record, they are not taking the accomplishment for granted. This year, thereÕ s some substantial rebuilding to occur, as three talented athletes graduated from the team: Hahnah Saroff, Kensie Baertschi, and Emily Borgh. The top returning players are Mackenzie Bennett and Cora Connolly said Coach Rob Tefft, whoÕ s taken various teams to lofty championships through his dozen or so years at the helm. He continued that he expects these two players to provide leadership. Tefft said he expects the team Ñ with a lot of hard work ahead Ñ to repeat or surpass last yearÕ s success, although the squad overall is short on experience. Ò We hope to play an uptempo style, get out in transition, and crash the boards on both ends,Ó he said. Ò We will need to play sound fundamental basketball.Ó Assisting in the seasonÕ s campaign will be Mackenzie Bennett and Cora Connolly. Vivian Jaworsky is returning after sitting out the 2012-13 season with an ACL tear. Cassie Sipowicz and Lauren Grover are the two seniors on the roster. Ò Cassie and Lauren will have to play quality minutes for us,Ó Tefft said. Ò Cara Mastropietro, a junior and Paige Farrington, a sophomore are first-time varsity players. Add to the mix two freshmen Ñ Nicole Nolin and Lacey Cormie Ñ and that is where we are.Ó Tefft said that despite the lack of experience overall, the 201314 season holds promise. Ò The girls are working very hard in practice. They have high expectations, theyÕ re focused and excited to get it going,Ó he said. Ò We will put a plan together, practice hard and play basketball.Ó

Reigning state champions expect new hurdles By Thom Randall

thom@denpubs.com LAKE GEORGE Ñ The Lake George Warriors waged a tough, tenacious campaign in 2012-13 and racked up a series of stunning victories to capture the New York State Class C Basketball Championship Ñ and they re-wrote school history in the process. This follow-up year presents considerable promise, but brand new challenges due to the unprecedented accomplishments of last year.

Although four talented Warrior athletes Ñ Connor McCoy, Greg Rosenthal, Ethan Wincowski and Alex Labruzzo Ñ were lost to graduation in June, some key athletes are returning. Top returners include Joel Wincowski, who as a sophomore was named the state tournament’s MVP. In the final State Championship game, he scored 33 points, including seven 3-pointers. Burghers seek to build on last year’s progress

thom@denpubs.com WARRENSBURG Ñ Under the leadership of veteran college coach Bob Hummel, the Warrensburg Boys Basketball program is in the second year of a rebuilding phase. Last year, the Burghers ended up in the middle of the highlycompetitive Adirondack League Western Division, with a 6-10 win-loss record. Hummel said this week that the 2012-13 teamÕ s accomplishments were substantial, considering that two teams in the league Ñ Argyle and Lake George Ñ won the New York State Championship title in their respective classes. This year, the team is likely to take the experience they gained last year and accomplish even more, said Hummel, who served for several years as Assistant Varsity Coach at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute following an 18-year tenure at Queensbury High School. Recently, Hummel outlined the BurghersÕ approach for 201314. Ò Our team will be focusing on quick quality shots and sound defensive principles,Ó he said, noting he was excited about the year’s prospects. “Our ‘first five’ are pretty athletic, but they’ll have to shoot well because theyÕ re not tall Ñ TheyÕ ll have a challenge every game to defend without fouling.Ó Nine players make up this yearÕ s varsity roster with three seniors and six underclassmen. Veterans from the 2012-13 squad include Nick Perrone, Shea Irish and Jake Nemec, Hummel said. Ò WeÕ ve got guys who can score,Ó he said. The point guard duties will be shared by junior Marcus Perrone and Junior Alek Olden, the coach continued. Ò Both point guards possess good ball-handling skills and court vision,Ó he said. Hummel added that Olden, drafted from JV, should be a key contributor.

Ò We expect Olden will make a big difference for us,Ó he said. Also serving at guard positions will be senior Nick Perrone and junior Shea Irish, Hummel continued. Ò Both Nick and Shea are proven scorers from last seasonÕ s varsity team,Ó he said. The coach added that sophomore Jake Nemec, senior Chris Persons and sophomore Mike Kareglis will anchor the low post. Junior Markus Moyer and senior Brauer Jones will provide depth in the back court, he continued. Hummel said that the team has chemistry and camaraderie — and they’re unselfish with the ball. Ò Our guys play well together Ñ they pass because they want to, instead of because they have to,” he said. “It reflects their character.” He said that the Burghers will undoubtedly provide exciting action this year for Burgher fans. Ò If the team can avoid foul trouble and remain healthy, they will be very competitive in the Adirondack League,Ó he said, predicting that the league will again exhibit a lot of talent petition this season.

The Warrensburg Girls Basketball team has seven experienced athletes returning from last yearsÕ squad, which reached the Class D Section II tournament semi-finals. Among those spearheading the 2013-14 campaign will be Erin Langworthy, the sophomore sensation with a deadeye outside shot who led last yearÕ s team offensively, averaging 17 points per game. A skilled ball-handler and tenacious defender who forces turnovers, Langworthy knows what it takes to win. Also returning are seniors Mika Morehouse and Kerrigan

Roth, who played key roles in the 2012-13 teamÕ s substantial success. Morehouse scored 17 points in the 2013 Sectional tournament quarterfinal game against Northville that the Burghers won 58-42. Both have proven themselves, charging the basket, as well as pushing their opponents to the limit, forcing them to foul. Ò Mika Morehouse will be banging around inside for us, and Kerrigan Roth is a tough athlete, as well as a great ball handler with good court vision,Ó Coach Smith said. With tons of talent, Burgher wrestlers eye promising year By Thom Randall

thom@denpubs.com WARRENSBURG Ñ Following a successful 2012-13 season, the Warrensburg High School Wrestling team has bright prospects, considering their deep roster of battle-tested veterans and their promising new teammates, most of whom have years of experience in the sport. The Burghers tallied a 2012-13 win-loss record of 14-9, as well as placing third in the Sectionals and winning several independent tournaments. This year the Burghers may be even more successful, considering the team lost only two seniors to graduation: Jon Russell and Jerico Converse. One of the newcomers is Ryan Honey, a ninth grader who coach Mark Trapasso described as Ò a tough kid whoÕ s a work in progress.Ó Tipping the scales at 86 pounds, he will be wrestling in the 99-pound weight class. Competing in the 106 and 113 weight classes will be eighth grader Dan Monthony and sophomore Aidan LaPoint. Monthony wrestled varsity last year despite his youth. Trapasso said heÕ s a hard worker and heÕ s improving every week. LaPoint also has experience, having wrestled at 99 pounds for the junior varsity squad. At 120 pounds is junior Austin West, one of the leading wrestlers on the squad. Trapasso said, noting that West is skilled and strong, and is expected to should win a lot. At 120 pounds is Freshman rookie Yaser Farooq, who Trapasso said was tough and wiry, a hard worker, and learns fast. Ò HeÕ s a Ô scrapperÕ Ñ if he learns the moves, heÕ ll have some success this year,Ó he said. At 126 pounds is senior Nick Nedelcu, whoÕ s had a lengthy, successful career in wrestling. Ò NickÕ s won a lot of matches over the last few years,Ó the coach said, predicting Nedelcu will break 100 career wins in the 2013-14 season. Eagles working hard toward a turnaround year thom@denpubs.com BOLTON LANDING Ñ Last yearÕ s varsity boys basketball team had a disappointing record, heavy in the losses, a tally that didn’t reflect the athleticism of the team. The 2013-14 season, however, represents a new beginning. The team has a talented, experienced lineup of athletes — five of them seniors Ñ and a new coach with high expectations. Glenn Begly, whoÕ s mentored high school and college teams in the Geneva NY area, is starting his first year as Varsity Boys Basketball coach for Bolton Central. His lineup includes seniors Django Denne, Alex Maxam, Sam Cady, Andy Kirk, and Josh Persons, backed up by junior Joe Connery and sophomores Daniel Malone, Corey Van Auken, Mike Smith, and Josh Curri-Brimhall. Denne, Maxam and Persons have solid experience on the court. Kirk may be new to the team, but heÕ s quick and a very good athlete, Begly said. Sam Cady has some court experience and will be contributing, the coach said. The team has height for 2013-14, which should work to its advantage. Denne, Van Auken and Persons are relatively tall and should be pulling down a substantial number of rebounds and well as taking the ball into the basket to score. Ò We have a little size, so we should be a good rebbounding team,Ó Begly continued. Smith will probably be calling the shots as point guard. Ò The players will be getting used to a new system of play,Ó Begly said. Ò The progress of the team depends on way they learn the system and how well they execute on defense Ñ Above anything else, IÕ m emphasizing defense Ñ thatÕ s where the game

starts and ends.Ó The players are dedicated to honing their skills, and they are working well together, Begly said. Ò ItÕ s a matter of the right work ethic and attitude, particularly on defense and at some point, offense,Ó he added. Ò This is a great group thatÕ s worked extremely hard so far Ñ Attitude is everything.Ó

Bolton girls are armed with experience for 2013-14 By Thom Randall

thom@denpubs.com BOLTON LANDING Ñ Area sports fans are going to enjoy a lot of fast-paced athletic play this winter from the Bolton Central Varsity Girls basketball team Ñ theyÕ ve got a lineup of experienced athletes this year who possess substantial enthusiasm for the sport. Coaching the team is Luke Schweickert, who has mentored some very successful teams in his eight years at the helm. HeÕ s backed up by Steve Showers, also a veteran. The 2013-14 team is loaded with experience and skilled, competitive athletes Ñ only one senior, 2012-13 team captain Maddy Wilson was lost to graduation. No less than seven players return from last yearÕ s team. These veterans include junior Olivia Seamans, a forward who was named to the first-team All West, and honored as a first-team regional All-Star. Seamans was BoltonÕ s leading rebounder and scorer in 2012-13. She knows what it takes to win Ñ she was a key player in a regional club soccer team that won a national title earlier this year. Also returning are three seniors Ñ guards Molly Schoder and Kim Wright, along with starting center/forward Olivia Clesceri. Schweickert said heÕ s expecting Seamans and the seniors to keep the younger players focused and dedicated to skill development. Ò We are hoping that these girls will provide excellent leadership,Ó he said. Junior guard Sarah Calzada will anchor the Eagle backcourt and will provide stability on defense. Jaguars look to make playoffs this season

johng@denpubs.com JOHNSBURG Ñ The Johnsburg boys basketball team is hoping to improve on last seasonÕ s overall record of 2-16 and is setting its sights on earning a place in the MVAC Division III playoffs this year. Head Coach Gene Maiorana and Assistant Coaches Rich Schloss and Dave Cavanagh have a primary goal this season of Ò being all we can beÓ wether in a game, a practice or in the classroom. Ò We are focusing on a total team effort,Ó Coach Maiorana said. Ò And, earning a place in the playoffs.Ó A major strength of the team is the committment and enthusiasm shown by the 10-man roster. Modified and summer ball has helped teach strong fundamentals, as well as basketball camp. Ò I think that will go a long way toward helping achieve a winning record this season,Ó Coach Maiorana said. Ò I certainly think that is within our grasp.Ó The Jaguars will take the court this year without Chester Prouty, John Sears and Zach Watson who were lost to graduation. Lady Jaguars hope to improve as season progresses By John Gereau

johng@denpubs.com JOHNSBURG — Having lost their entire starting five to graduation last year, the Lady Jags are looking at a rebuilding year in 2013-14. Nevertheless, Head Coach Phil Goodman said he has a great group of girls who are energetic and willing to work hard to improve this season. Ò We are relatively young and inexperienced at the varsity level,Ó Coach Goodman said. Ò But as the girls gain varsity experience their play should improve significantly.” Ò Our goal is to show improvement throughout the season,Ó the coach said. Players lost to graduation from last yearÕ s 3-14 squad include Brooke Denno, Mikayla Glode, Kayla Williford, Anna Gahan and Lydia Knickerbocker. This yearÕ s squad includes 10 players, with just two seniors in 5-foot-2-inch Morgan Amell and 5-foot-8-inch Kora Millington, who Coach Goodman believes to be a scoring threat.

Lady Mountaineers return veteran players By John Gereau

johng@denpubs.com MINERVA/NEWCOMB Ñ The Minerva/Newcomb girls basketball team returns a solid nucleus of veteran players that should make the team a force in the MVAC this season. While the team lost offensive standout Ashley Miller to graduation, Coach Bruce McGinn and Assistant Coach Jim Gereau enjoy a deep roster of 16 girls, including returning veterans Gabrielle McNally and Makenzie Winslow, each of whom are returning four-year varsity players. McNally will be expected to score and control the lane on defense, while Winslow will be the primary ball handler who will score from distance as well as in transition. The team also returns senior Dakota Bennett, a rock solid defender who will also score in transition, as well as senior Caitlyn Yandon. Junior Nicole Rubertone will help clean up in the paint as well as defend and rebound and junior Astasia Myler has stepped up as a serious scoring threat. Angela McCall, Mary Labar, Lunh Ngo, Taylor Fieden, Meghan OÕ Donnell, Isabelle Bureau, Svenja Herb, Madison Miller, Danielle McNally and Bethanie Viele round out the roster for the Lady Mountaineers Ñ all are expected to make positive contributions. Coming off last seasonÕ s record of 14-6, Coach McGinn said his team’s goal this season is to make the sectional final. Ò We like to play an up-tempo game, and have a number of players that can play multiple positions,Ó Coach McGinn said. One area the team needs to work on is defense, the coach said. Ò We need to improve on our play of man to man defense,Ó he said.

With those players as a solid nucleus, Head Coach Glenn Lang and Assistant Coach A.J. Monthony hope to improve on last seasonÕ s record of 5-11. Coach Lang lost 1st team all-star Austin Williams to graduation last year as well as 2nd team all-star Bryton Chikukwa, but he said he has plenty of depth at every position including seven at guard, five at forward and three at center. Ò We really have a good blend of talent this year,Ó Coach Lang said. The coach said his goals for the 2013-14 season in the MVAC Division III are to continue to improve as a team as the season progresses and for each player to play to his potential. Ò That, in turn, will allow the team to reach its potential,Ó Coach Lang said. Coach Lang said areas in which the team is hoping to improve as the season progresses are working the boards and playing stronger defense. johng@denpubs.com INDIAN LAKE/LONG LAKE Ñ The Indian Lake/Long Lake Orange return a young team this winter, but first year Head Coach Craig Seaman believes the quickness and athleticism of his players is going to keep them in games. Lost to graduation from last yearÕ s squad which posted an overall 13-7 record are Matt Moore, Colin Farrell, Seth Hart and Kyle Douglas. The team returns just two seniors in Shane Shortt and Kyle Locke. Nevertheless, the team has no shortage of talent. Coach Seaman will look to his returning point guard Henry Sandiford, who averaged 10.9 points per game last season and ran the offense from the post. Shooting guard Curtis Seaman also returns. At 6-foot-1-inch, Curtis drained 38 three pointers last year and averaged 10 points per contest. On the boards, Coach Seaman will rely heavily on junior center Rudy Giessen, who the coach said is a Ò large post presence.Ó Coach Seaman said he will also rely on the veteran guard Shortt on defense. Ò Senior Shane Shortt is an excellent defensive player, and sophomore Zach Hoag is a quick, athletic player,Ó the coach said. Areas of improvement the team is working on include team scoring and scoring off the bench, Coach Seaman said. Ò We are young, however we are athletic and quick and will look to play an up-tempo game,Ó the coach said.

Sentinel track team expects good season

fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA Ñ It should be another strong season for the Ticonderoga boys indoor track team. Ò I expect our boyÕ s team to be competitive in the section this season,Ó Coach Walter Thorne said. “There should be a fierce competition amongst the teams in Section VII.Ó The Sentinels return 16 athletes from last winterÕ s roster, including Jay Hebert. Hebert is the defending state champion in the 55-meter hurdles and is the top-ranked hurdler in New York State, indoor and outdoor.

Joining Hebert in the sprints and jumps will be veterans Stephen Bartlett, Skyler Gilbert, Coleman Granger, Justyn Granger, Sean Lawrie, Tyler Loudermilk, Marcus Moser, Shawn Silliman and Ryan Trudeau. New to the jumps and sprints will be rookies Cody Huestis, Devin Ikenberg, Conner Lawrie, Jarod Pike, Tim Ryan and Adam Zhang. Bartlett will also be in the throwing events along with returnees Cody Shaner and Zechariah McLaughlin and newcomers Ikenberg, Brandon Romaca and Carl teRiele. Running the middle and distance races will be Silliman, John Cook, Ryan Price, Kody Parrott, Aaron Russell and Joel Cook. Ò Attitude, team balance with 16 returning athletes from last yearÕ s indoor team, and 10 new members will be our main strength,Ó Thorne said. Ò The distance team will be led by

Kody Parrott and Ryan Price, who had a very good cross country season. Our sprinters will be led by Jay Hebert, state champion in the 55-meter hurdles, and Coleman Granger, Jarryn Granger and Marcus Moser Ñ all members of the 4x200-meter state qualifying relay team with emerging ninth grade sprinter Justyn Granger. Our throwers will be led by Cody Shaner and Zack McLaughlin, who should provide much needed points in the shot put. “Also we have 10 first-year athletes sign-up for indoor track who show a lot of promise in practice,Ó the coach said. Ò How fast they adapt to the track program will have a great impact on how well we do this season.Ó Thorne, who is in his 15th season as Ticonderoga track coach, will be assisted by Phil Kneller and Jay Wells. Kneller works with the throwers and Wells with the distance runners.

thom@denpubs.com LAKE GEORGE Ñ The Lake George/Hadley Luzerne War Eagles Wrestling Team has substantial promise for 2013-24, considering its deep, experienced roster. The team has a lineup of 26 wrestlers, most of all of whom have years of experience. The War-Eagles know what it takes to win, too, as their team captured first place last year in both the Glens Falls Tournament and the Wasaren League Tournament, both highly competitive. Their season record was 8-6, and Dan Jardine, who graduated in June, captured a Section II Championship trophy. While some years, the teamÕ s roster is thin, the 2013-14 squad boasts 26 wrestlers, 17 of them from Lake George Central School. Returning alongside Wincowski Ñ who averaged 27 points per game in 2013-14 Ñ are experienced players Andrew Zibro, Tyler Brown, Matt Bureau and Jeff Naftaly. They know what it takes to grind through one game after another to win under intense pressure throughout the post-season Ñ through a Class C Section II Championship and ending the season by securing the top statewide honors. Their 2013-14 campaign included stunning comebacks and a total team effort in which their tenacity and sheer will-to-win took them game-by game all the way to the coveted crown. These veterans will be joined by leading newcomers Duncan Mularz, Kyle Jones and Andrew McGowan. High expectations also exist for Dylan Smith, Colby Cracco and Gabe Sallstrom who round out the team. Early-season projections call for Wincowski, Zibro and Brown to be starting guards, with Bureau and Naftaly the teamÕ s forwards. Coach Dave Jones and Assistant Coach Tim Kissane expect the 2013-14 team will again focus on employing speed and quickness in their uptempo play which features aggressive defense and fast-break offense Ñ a strategy that took them all the way to the state championship in 2013-14 and made school history Ñ It was the first time for a state title for any boys sports team for the school. At a recent practice, Zibro talked about how the accomplishments of last yearÕ s team may be a legacy, but it also presents additional challenges. Ò A lot of people have expectations for us to do the same this year Ñ which would be awesome Ñ but thatÕ s considerable pressure, and hopefully weÕ ll be able to deal with it. We obviously want to make it back to the states, but we have to stay focused and take one game at a time,Ó he said. Bureau added his thoughts. Ò Our biggest goal is the same as last year, but we have to concentrate on defeating the very next team, and not deviate from that objective.Ó Naftaly said he knows that this year, there will be no opportunities to take opponents by surprise. Ò Each gameÕ s going to be tough, because every team is going to be gunning for us,Ó he said.

Alpine team expecting some solid finishes this year By John Gereau

johng@denpubs.com JOHNSBURG Ñ Alpine Coach Pete Burns is enjoying a nice base at Gore Mountain already this season while his ski team readies for the 2013-14 season. Coach Burns said his team should be competitive this year, and he anticipates improved skills over last year and some very solid races from his skiers. Ò It can be tough to compete against the bigger schools, but we should get some solid finishes,” the coach said. Ò For the girls I think some top five team finishes are attainable and for the boys if we can crack the top 10 that would be a good achievement.Ó Coach Burns lost Ryan Olsen from North Warren and Shannon Ovitt from Johnsburg to graduation last year. Both were the teamÕ s top two finishers for most races last year. But the team returns a talented girls squad in Courtney Allard and Jamie Bruce from Johnsburg and Megan Miller, Hannah Erickson and Sarah Phillips from North Warren. Justin Schmale and Patrick Harrison should

also win their fair share of races for the boys. Rounding out the boys team is Evan Riedinger and J.T. Stark. All four attend Johnsburg Central. Coach Burns said his goals for the season include having some Ò solid races and improving our skills over last year.Ó Ò We donÕ t have any kids that are in a race program outside of High school, so that puts us at an immediate disadvantage on a technical level,Ó the coach said. The team does have one advantage, however. While the team often must face much larger schools with deeper teams, Coach Burns said his skiers have the advantage of training four to five days a week right in their backyards at nearby Gore Mountain. “We definitely get in our runs, so I am expecting some solid finishes and steady improvement,Ó he said. Johnsburg Nordic team hopes to qualify skiers for the State Meet By John Gereau

johng@denpubs.com JOHNSBURG Ñ Coach of the Johnsburg Nordic team Gary Wilson and Assistant Coach Steve Tomb are hoping to improve on last winterÕ s record and possibly see one or two skiers qualify for the State Meet in February. The boys Nordic team placed sixth in Section 2 last year and the girls placed 10th. Coach Wilson said he expects some strong individual performances from both the girls and boys teams and said the goal of having Johnsburg represented at the State Meet is Ò within our reach with a strong commitment and a lot of hard work.Ó Johnsburg racers, Coach Wilson said, seem to favor the skate technique. This technique utilizes a motion that resembles rollerblading or ice skating Ñ the skier pushes out with one ski while gliding ahead on the other, and the two skis are always pushing away from each other. Ò Johnsburg racers seem to favor this technique and will be en-

ergized by the training plan,Ó Coach Wilson said. Conditioning will be paramount this season. Overall the team needs to build on its endurance, and at the same time, develop speed over distance, Coach Wilson said. Ò Our team is a cohesive, thoughtful, courteous group of skiers who look out for each other. They will push each other to excellence over the course of the season,Ó he said. Returning skiers to watch on the boysÕ team include Terry Allard and Aidan Conley. These two skiers are fit, and ready to ski hard and competitively in Section 2, Coach Wilson said. On the girlsÕ team, Fiona Fahy, Laura Richards, and Gillian Hayden return with the same drive as the boys. Will Davis and Yana Kinblom are moving up from the modified team, Coach Wilson said, and should give the team depth at the JV level. John Pierson, Caelan LÕ Hommedieu and Will Davis round out the roster for the boys Nordic team and Yana Kinblom and Shiloh Wood round out the girls.
