Ti harriers ready for new season By Keith Lobdell

keith@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA Ñ The Ticonderoga boys cross country team is prepared to again be in the mix of the CVAC and Section VII championship picture in 2014. Ò We have a good mix of youth and experience with our players this season,Ó coach Jay Wells said. Ò We lost some key runners from last year, but I think we can still be competitive.Ó Wells said he will be looking for leadership out of Kody Parrott, who is coming off a strong season as a member of the Sentinel track and field team in the spring. Ò We have had a strong tradition of great teams and we plan to continue that this season,Ó Wells said.

Lady Sentinels seek depth

By Keith Lobdell

keith@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA Ñ The Ticonderoga girls cross country team will start the season with a duo of strong runners while looking to add to their pool throughout the season. Ò Naomi Forkas is coming off a strong track and field season and she will be a good leader for all of our runners, boys and girls,Ó head coach Jay Wells said. Ò Sierra Stacy is our other runner on the team as we start the season so there is a concern with the depth of our girls team.Ó For team scores, five runners are needed to register a score for the team. Wells said they will contin-

ue to recruit girls even after the start of the season. While there may not be a team goal, each runner has personal goals to shave more time off the clock. Ò We will progress throughout the season,Ó Wells said. Ò Everybody is out there to be better than they were the previous meet, whether that means running a little longer or extra intervals. Being consistent is the best thing a runner can do in order to improve.Ó

keith@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA Ñ The Ticonderoga varsity football team was (arguably) inches away from the Section VII/Class D championship in 2013. In 2014, the team hopes to finish the job and defeat their oldest and traditional rival, Moriah, to advance to the state rounds of play. Ò I am very happy with how these guys are working for us,” first-year head coach Scott Nephew said. Nephew has been with the Sentinel program for the past 10 years and enters his first at the helm. Ò There is effort there every day and we have a good mix of new and returning players,Ó Nephew said. Ò The returning kids have been stepping up and taking leadership roles with the team. We want to be ready to go every week. We know that we will be in the last Section VII game of the season every year, so we donÕ t worry about last year and are focused on this year.Ó Nephew said fans will not see a lot of difference in how the Sentinels take to the field. Ò We are still looking to do the things that we have always done, maybe with a couple of wrinkles,Ó he said. Ò We are going to be ready for week one and then continue to improve for each week after that.Ó Senior Garrison Hughes will assume the duties behind center

Ò We want to keep everyone on the team together and on the same page and that is how we are going to accomplish our goals.Ó Hughes said he felt the team was coming together well early in the preseason and looks forward to getting things started in week one. Ò We need to get everyone ready for that week one game and then get everyone to produce in week two, week three, and on,Ó he said. Junior running back Ryan Trudeau said the Sentinels need to focus on what they are strong doing. Ò We have good chemistry on this team right now,Ó Trudeau said. Ò If we try to do the things that worked last year, we will be fine.” Nephew said he also looks for leadership and strong seasons from senior running back Konner Bruce, senior lineman Devin Alkinburgh, senior receiver Dom Banish and junior lineman Chase Dixon.

Experienced players return to pitch for Lady Sentinels By Keith Lobdell

keith@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA Ñ The Ticonderoga varsity girls soccer team will have plenty of players who know the system of coach Kathy Tubbs entering the 2014 season. Ò The team returns 13 players from last year,Ó Tubbs said. Ò This should provide a good nucleus of experienced athletes to begin the season.Ó Tubbs said the Lady Sentinels will have good team speed and will work hard to improve throughout the season. Ò The team will need to learn how to play together and improve in their overall knowledge of the game so they are able to make good decisions while on the field.” Tubbs said the players will have to rely on each other in order to succeed.

Panthers look to build on successes By Keith Lobdell CROWN POINT Ñ Last season, the Crown Point varsity boys soccer team challenged for a spot in the Section VII/Class D championship game. With seven starters returning to the squad, head coach Randy Pertak hopes the team can take the next step and make it to Plattsburgh High. Ò The boys should be a team to watch this season,Ó Pertak said. Ò We return seven starters that had a successful season last year that included a sectional win and a hard lost match in overtime to Elizabethtown-Lewis.Ó Brendan Crowningshield enters his fourth season as the Panther goalie. Ò He is very active in the goal and will help anchor the defense, which returns Division III all stars Chad Stephens and Kolby Pertak,Ó coach Pertak said. See PANTHERS, page 21

Moriah preps to defend Class D title with new core

By Keith Lobdell

keith@denpubs.com MORIAH Ñ The Moriah varsity football team will have a lot of new faces in their 2014 starting lineup as they take the field to defend their Section VII/Class D title. The Vikings, who made the regional championship game in 2013, graduated 19 seniors with only seven players returning to the roster this season. Ò We have been working hard and I have seen some good hitting on the field,” head coach Don Tesar said. “We have been working on technique and the sets we have that are different from what they play on the JV team.Ó The players moving up to the varsity program are used to the winning tradition of Moriah football, having grown up in the shadow of the perennial Class D favorite and two-time state finalist (2008, 2009). They also competed for an undefeated JV team last season. Tesar said some of the players also got the chance to get extra practice time in after being called up to the varsity squad for the 2013 postseason. Ò They got an extra four weeks of practice in and we had some kids who turned out to be starters by the end of the year,Ó Tesar said. Ò That was something that helped everybody.Ó On offense, the Viking backfield will take on a new look, starting at the quarterback position where the team loses the services of 1,500-yard passer Cole Gaddor. His replacement, Adam Jaquish, is known more for his prowess on the basketball court, but Tesar believes the 6Õ 6Ó signal caller will be a vital part of the Viking offense.

Ò He started at defensive end for us at the end of last season and made some big plays for us in that time,Ó Tesar said. Ò He has good size, he is athletic and he can throw the ball. He does not have to pick a lane like Cole did, he can see over the line which will open things up more for him.Ó The Vikings will return Kyle Stockwell as one of the running backs, who was injured for part of last season. Ò Kyle has a little bit of experience but we will have a mostly new backfield with Kyle, Troy Welch and Colin Harris getting the carries,Ó Tesar said. On the outside, the Vikings will have size and athleticism with Ryan Jaquish, Taylor Slattery and Jarrod MacDougal. The lines will be anchored by Hayden Fernandez, a third year starter in the program. Ò He is a guy we like to run behind,Ó Tesar said. Ò Jeremy Murcray is another big guy that we are going to need in order to run off both sides of the line.Ó The defense will be anchored by junior Noah Gilbo. Ò Noah is a big, strong player who has slimmed down and become quicker,Ó Tesar said. Ò He can play some line, fullback and middle linebacker for us.Ó Tesar said the keys for the Vikings to have a successful season include being able to talk in pressure moments during the game. Ò We need to have more communication across the line and on the defensive side of the ball because right now we are just standing there waiting for the play to start,Ó he said. Ò You have to communicate a lot on the field and you have to learn how to do it.Ó Tesar said despite the massive changeover in the roster, the goals remain the same. Ò We always want to be playing after Thanksgiving,Ó Tesar

Moriah swim hopes stroke improvement makes the difference By Mauranda Stahl-Sorensen mauranda@denpubs.com

MORIAH — An 11-girl roster makes up the Moriah modified/ varsity combination swimming team for the 2014-15 season. Coach Angie Childs discussed what she believes her team will bring to the starting blocks and lanes this season. Ò We have a lot of return swimmers,Ó said Childs. Ò Two of them are seniors that have been swimming since seventh grade with me. Since we have started practice I have seen a lot of improvement with their strokes and I think that will be good for us this year.Ó While longevity and stoke are their strong points, Childs says she believes that the team will have to work on their movement off the starting block this year. Ò We really have to work on starts,Ó said Childs. Ò That is not our strongest point.Ó Childs also noted that Celina Madill would be a key swimmer to watch. Ò Just in the practices we have had Celina looks like she is going to have a great year,Ó said Childs.

keith@denpubs.com B O LT O N / WA R R E N S B U R G The merger of the Bolton and Warrensburg girls varsity soccer programs will take to the field for the first time in 2014. Last season, the Bolton squad made the Class D semifinals, falling to St. Johnsville. Coach Patrick Morency is hoping to use the new combination of players from both schools to remain competitive in the Adirondack League and Section II. Ò Both schoolÕ s are currently working through the process of making this merge successful while at the same time trying to get the season off to a successful start,Ó Morency said. Ò The team hopes to be able to contend against the larger schools in the Adirondack League but has its work cut-out against Lake George (2013 Adirondack League Champions), Whitehall and Fort Ann (2013 Section 2 Finalist).Ó The team will be looking to replace five-year starter Kim Wright along with working to improve their game. Ò The team must improve defensively, individually and collectively, so that we can continue to compete in the Adirondack League,Ó Morency said. Ò Starting goalkeeper Andi Pfau must step forward and make the necessary saves that will keep her team in close games. Offensively we need to find as many players as possible willing to contribute to our goal scoring efforts so that the primary responsibility doesnÕ t fall solely on the shoulders of a few players. New merged WarEagles team has depth and determination By Thom Randall

thom@denpubs.com LAKE GEORGE Ñ The Lake George Warriors have a decades-long tradition of gritty football action, with aggressive, talented athletes running strategic plays while racking up hundreds of victories and dozens of championships. But in recent years, due to falling school enrollment, the Warriors have struggled to even field teams that could finish out a season. A new joint football program with HadleyLuzerne High School, however, has reignited hopes among area fans for Lake George football returning to its glory days. The prospects of a winning season with plenty of crowd-pleasing action are not lost on Coach Jeff Bennett. Ò ItÕ s a whole new game this year,Ó he said. Ò Last year, injuries took their toll and we had no tailback for four games. This year, weÕ ve got depth and talent.Ó Although the team moves up from Class D to the more intense play in Class C, Bennett said the new 2014 WarEagles Ñ armed with 16 players from Hadley-Luzerne High Ñ is up for the challenge. The Hadley-Luzerne players work hard, they are listening to advice, theyÕ re learning fast Ñ and they love football, Bennett said. With the expanded roster, Bennett will be able to make substitutions more freely, allowing his players to maintain their energy level during games, he said. Ò With this new depth, the kids can share the load,Ó he said. Ò Last year I had a Fresh-

man who didnÕ t come off the field for entire games.Ó A key strength of the team is the line, which will be making holes for their running backs as well as pressuring the opponentsÕ playmaking. Ò We have a very experienced, strong and aggressive offensive and defensive line,Ó Bennett said. Ò We have kids who make things happen up front.Ó On offense, the Lake George tradition of explosive running plays and crisp passing is likely to continue. For the ground game, the WarEagles pack a

three-pronged threat. Ricky Jowly, an experienced running back, is fast on his feet. Tyler Vandenbogaart from Luzerne is 230 pounds of beef, and heÕ ll be clearing a path for Jowly Ñ or heÕ ll be plowing down opponents as he runs, Bennett said. Ò Tyler Õ s like a treehouse and and RickyÕ s the lightning,Ó Bennett quipped. Brett Parsons, most likely the quarterback, is an elusive runner and makes good decisions, Bennett continued. Ò Brett can throw on the run, so heÕ ll be rolling out a lot, and he sees the field well when heÕ s on the run,Ó the coach said. Ò HeÕ s

a double threat Ñ WeÕ ll be seeing some great play action.Ó The WarEagles defense, Bennett continued, is big, strong and fast. Ò Everyone is feeding off each other, aggressively hunting down the football,Ó he said. Ò ItÕ s very fun to watch.Ó Bennett has a personal investment in seeing this new Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George merger flourish. He played football at HadleyLuzerne in 1982 and 1983 as a Freshman and Sophmore Ñ the final two years of football at the high school. Ò ItÕ s nice to now help bring football back to the Hadley-Luzerne athletes,Ó Bennett said. The teamÕ s season begins with a game Sept. 5 against Corinth, which enjoyed a 6-3 season in 2013 Ñ and they didnÕ t lose any of their starters to graduation, Bennett said. Ò This game against Corinth will show us where weÕ re at,Ó he said with a smile. Last week, Corinth Coach Chris Doody dug up the decades-old wooden Ò War CanoeÓ trophy, which in the 1970s and early 1980s served as the spoils of victory in annual showdowns between Hadley-Luzerne and Corinth. Bennett said his players were aiming to take the coveted trophy away from Corinth for a year. Ò Our guys will be fighting for the War Canoe,Ó Bennett said. Ò Hopefully, weÕ ll walk away with it.Ó Bennett said the WarEagles were pumped about the seasonÕ s prospects and were working hard toward team goals. Ò WeÕ re looking forward to playing, thatÕ s for sure,Ó he said. Ò ThereÕ s definitely a lot of enthusiasm Ñ WeÕ ll be ready to play!Ó

CHESTERTOWN Ñ The North Warren varsity boys soccer team will look to improve their status in the Adirondack League standings for 2014. Ò The North Warren varsity soccer team as always is looking to improve upon last yearÕ s record and we have the skill and desire to do so,” first-year head coach Josh Gifford said. “Every day we will work hard and never give up.Ó Gifford said the Cougars will use some traits of their players to help build a successful team. Ò Our strengths for the season are our speed up front and our physical defense in back,Ó he said. Ò An area of improvement would be our scoring. We look to take more shots and score more goals this year.Ó Players Gifford will look to for leadership on the field in 2014 are Daren Granger, Dan Tennyson, Justin Needham and goalie Chris DeFranco. Gifford will be assisted by John Remington.

CHESTERTOWN — The North Warren varsity field hockey team returns a solid core of players to the field in 2014. Ò Our strength will be in experience with 12 returning players that include seven starting seniors,Ó head coach Lynn Lewis said. Ò Those seven seniors will be looked upon to provide quality leadership and guidance as we compete against some strong teams in our league this year.Ó The team will look to solidify their offensive half this year. Ò Scoring remained a struggle last year, but with a projected new offensive lineup, the Cougars are hoping to capitalize on alot more scoring opportunities,Ó Lewis said. Ò The success will be determined by how easily the players adjust to new roles on the field. Coming off a solid season last year, the players have high expectations for the upcoming season. They have alot of heart, talent and determination which is also shared with a great team chemistry.Ó Lewis will be assisted by Lori Lewis

Bolton-Warrensburg boys coming together By Keith Lobdell

keith@denpubs.com BOLTON/WARRENSBURG Ñ The combination between two former Adirondack League foes will lead to a mixture of experience for the Bolton/Warrensburg combined varsity boys soccer team in 2014. “In our first season as a combined soccer program, we would like to see our student-athletes become a cohesive unit,Ó said cohead coach Scott McCarthy, who is joined by Rob Thomas on the bench. Ò The growth of our playersÕ skills and maturity as young men are the primary goals for the season.Ó McCarthy said, as the 2013 Bolton coach, several key players return who will gel nicely with key returning players for the 2013 Warrensburg unit.

Ò Our team strengths will be the return of several seniors from last yearÕ s Bolton varsity team and the addition of several strong players from the Warrensburg program,Ó he said. Ò These players will provide guidance and leadership to our younger athletes.Ó McCarthy and Thomas agree that the team can be compettive among the rest of the members of the Adirondack League, but will have to make sure they finish their chances in the offensive third. Ò Finishing and increasing our scoring opportunities are two areas that we will be looking to improve upon,Ó McCarthy said. Ò We believe that this team has the ability to be very competitive in the Adirondack League.Ó The team will be led by several players, including Noah Markwica, Shane Putney, Michael Smith, Joe Connery and Joe Saleh. All of these players bring an intensity and passion for the game,Ó McCarthy said.

Family spirit, dedication of WCS football team key to 2014 prospects By Thom Randall

thom@denpubs.com WARRENSBURG Ñ Player dedication, team chemistry and the fortitude to persevere through any challenge are bound to take the Warrensburg High School football team a long way this year, area sports observers say. Imagine a team in which all 31 players never miss a practice. A team in which egos don’t collide and conflict. A team that lost a lot of talent to graduation, but its players are stepping up to take their place. Coach Mike Leonbruno, an accomplished semi-pro quarterback, said he hasnÕ t seen anything like this. Ò This team may have the best attitude of any I have coached in my years at Warrensburg,Ó he said, noting that 35 students turned out for the sport in August, and not one has dropped out Ñ despite the tough practice routines. Last year, players skipped practices and others dropped out or were cut for disciplinary reasons, leaving 16 players for the team’s first scrimmage, about half of the original roster and the stateÕ s legal minimum. ItÕ s far different this year, Leonbruno said. Ò The 2014 players want to learn and work hard Ñ we are pushing them in practice and theyÕ re responding: they ask to work harder,Ó he said. Ò ItÕ s huge for us to have that commitment.Ó Leonbruno added that the players look out for each other and the veteran players encourage their teammates. Ò ItÕ s a family-type environment,Ó he said. Ò The guys are always Ô thereÕ for each other.Ó Assistant Coach Pat Gormley, a coach for 30 years, agreed with Leonbruno about how the players are working together. Ò WeÕ ve never seen this much team chemistry,Ó he said. Ò These guys believe in each other,Ó he said. Ò If some kids are struggling in workouts and drills, the others are vocal, encouraging them, helping them through the tougher days with their support.Ó The team lost a lot of talent to graduation Ñ talented 2013 Quarterback Malachai Prosser, thousand-yard rusher Connor Scott, and aggressive linebacker and guard Trevor Baker. The 2013 squad pulled off the dramatic come-from-behind

victory over rival Lake George, with a trick double-reverse 29yard touchdown play executed in the final three seconds of the game. The feat stunned the crowd. The sophomore Burgher receiver who threw that pass to Prosser under intense pressure, Jake Nemec, is back for 2014, likely taking on the quarterback role. Anchoring the 2014 team is senior lineman Rogers McLaughlin, who the coaches said is demonstrating outstanding leadership. Although not one starter is returning to the offensive backfield, lined up for 2014 in running-back roles are Donny Stone and Joey Schuster, who have proven their athleticism in prior years. Two players new to varsity football are taking on the posts of tight end Ñ Mike Craigslist and John Kindred, who the coaches say have impressive height and speed. Ò Kindred and Craigslist are two of the hardest workers on the team, and theyÕ re getting strong,Ó Leonbruno said. The season opens on Sept. 6 with an away game versus Hoosic Valley, following a scrimmage a week earlier with Corinth. The Burghers have a formidable challenge ahead of them: several teams in Class C have beefed-up rosters due to football program mergers this year. Cambridge and Salem now have a joint team, and Fort Edward is now competing with players from Argyle Central. The Burghers, however, have a tradition of overcoming adversity Ñ and theyÕ re renowned for a freewheeling offense with exciting, game-changing plays that thrill the crowd. Ò WeÕ ve got our work cut out for us,Ó Leonbruno said of the upcoming competition against the teams that represent two schools. He noted the Burghers will be utilizing their double-wing offense that has in recent years effectively plowed through its opponentsÕ defenses for impressive ground yardage. Leonbruno added that heÕ s concentrating on the rushing attack Ñ as well as preaching ball control. Ò WeÕ re trying at this point to get the team to execute mistakefree and precise,Ó he said. Ò I love to pass, but weÕ re not going to pass just to make the fans happy Ñ WeÕ re here to win.Ó

MINERVA/NEWCOMB Ñ The Minerva/Newcomb girls varsity soccer team will return many familiar faces to the field for the 2014 Northern Soccer League Division III season, including the player many say is the most dangerous striker in the league. Ò Makenzie Winslow continues to be consistent in the middle of the field, working the ball, and looking for the goal,” coach Candice Gereau said of the 2013 Division III MVP. Along with the scoring punch, the Lady Mountaineers return a veteran squad to the team, with only two newcomers on the squad in senior Madison Miller and sophomore Jordan Bush, a heralded addition from the modified ranks. Jaguars seek to break NSL winless streak

By Keith Lobdell

By Keith Lobdell

JOHNSBURG Ñ The Johnsburg varsity girls soccer team has been preparing for their first season as a member of the Northern Soccer League since the changeover from field hockey, and now the time has come. “This will be the first year the Lady Jags join the Northern League as an official team,” head coach Cindy Homer said. “Last year was the first year varsity girls soccer was offered at Johnsburg and I am excited with the turnout. This team demonstrates quick footwork and the ability to read one another. Despite this being our first year, the girls are coming together and show a lot of potential.Ó Homer said the team will be strengthening their skills as they continue to learn to play as a unit. Ò We are a young team, so we need to have more time spent with the ball,Ó she said. Makayla Denno, who starred in the midfield for the Jaguars last season, will move back behind the defense and play goal. Ò She is demonstrating a natural understanding for that position,Ó Homer said. Homer said with the field players, senior Laura Richards will be a key along with a pair of freshman in Megan Bacon and Taylor Dwyer. “Laura has great foot work and reads the field well,” Homer said. Ò Megan and Taylor are the youngest players but show maturity on the field with strength and speed.” Homer will be assisted by Mark Richards.

JOHNSBURG Ñ The Johnsburg varsity boys soccer team is looking to get a tally in the left column of the record page in 2014. Ò After a winless year (0-11-1) in 2013, our goal is to point the Johnsburg soccer program in the right direction,Ó head coach Matthew Wells said. While the team struggled through the 2013 season, they did gain experience as a group that should help them in the new campaign. Ò We have some strong senior leaders who will be relied upon to be the backbone of the team this year,Ó Wells said. Ò We also have some depth with four juniors and four freshman. After losing one senior, we return 10 starters from last year Õ s team. The goal is to use the experience gained last year, and turn that into wins this year.Ó Wells said the experience will also be used to blend a quartet of freshmen in Bartek Malikowski, Kraig Millington, Patrick Riedinger and Seamus Tomb, into the teams rotation. Ò Another goal will be to integrate four freshmen into the lineup,Ó he said. Ò All four are expected to log heavy minutes for the team this year and will be called upon to contribute immediately.Ó The squad is also looking at a level amount of players from each grade, allowing for some consistency in years to come. Ò One of our main strengths is grade level depth,Ó Wells said. Ò While the team has six seniors, there are also four juniors and four freshmen. The hope is that we can continue to add players from the sophomore and freshmen class to fill in gaps left by graduating seniors.Ó Wells said the key to the 2014 season will be changing their luck on the offensive third of the field. Scoring was an issue for us last year,Ó he said. Ò After losing only one senior, our team is more experienced and more skilled than last year. That will hopefully translate into more goals and more wins.Ó Seniors Aidan Connelly and Moses Mulvey are two players Wells said will have to be leaders on the field for the Jaguars this season. Wells is assisted by Gene Maiorana

Warrior boys soccer champs seek to extend their success By Thom Randall

thom@denpubs.com WARRENSBURG Ñ Cruising on a wave of several record-setting seasons, the Lake George Warriors Boys Soccer team is positioned to continue the winning streak. The 2012 Warrior squad, called at the time the schoolÕ s Ò best ever,Ó blazed a trail with a 17-0 season and captured the Adirondack League Championship. Then in 2013, the Warrior crew captured the Section II Championship, won the regional competitions and fought into the Final Four of the New York State championship tournament Ñ the loftiest tournament achievement in school history Ñ as they racked up a 20-2-1 season. This stellar team gave up 10 seniors to graduation, including six starters Ñ among them Section II All-Star goalie Jeff Naftaly. Despite this deficit, however, the 2014 squad has vital experience and a deep roster, veteran coach Blake White

said this week. Although three of the four key 2013 defenders graduated, virtually the entire offensive lineup is returning for 2014, White said, noting that no less than 13 Seniors are back for 2014. Ò We should be scoring plenty of goals,Ó said White, whoÕ s coached boys soccer at Lake George for 33 years. Ò Success will be a matter of whether we can stop the other guys!Ó White observed that heÕ s got two fouryear players on the team including Craig Keenan, who set a school record last year by scoring 32 goals. The other four-year Warrior is Ian Quillinan, Section II Player of the Year and Goalie of the Year. Quillinan tallied a half-dozen goals and 21 assists in 2013, White said. Ò Ian ran the show last year,Ó White said. Ò He drives the team and sets the pace.Ó The veteran players also include John Rubado, a lightning fast player who really stepped up the second half of 2013. Ò John will help take the scoring pres-

sure off Keenan this year,Ó White said. Ò Between the two, theyÕ ll cause a lot of headaches for our opponents.Ó Another Senior is halfback Kyle Jones, halfback, a good passer who in 2013 scored key goals. The lone veteran starting defender is Noah Prime, who is cool under pressure, White said. Sophomores include Luke Vanderminden, a halfback-forward who is a skilled ball handler, White said. Ò Luke is shifty, and heÕ ll take pressure off Quillinan at midfield,” White said. “A lot of our other players are very solid.Ó Blake said the team will be focusing on building skills and team chemistry on defense. Last year, the defense only gave up 13 goals over 23 games, a school record. Ò If we can Ô hold the fort downÕ at the back end of the field, we have a decent shot at doing well again this year,Ó he concluded. Ò Our players have a good spirit Ñ theyÕ re a close-knit group and get along well together on the field.”

L.G. girls soccer team loaded with veteran talent By Thom Randall

thom@denpubs.com LAKE GEORGE Ñ Stellar season records and championships have for decades been enjoyed by Lake George girls soccer teams, and this year Õ s squad is poised to continue this tradition. The 2013 team won the Adirondack League Championship, then advanced two games into the Sectional tournament, tallying a 14-3-1 record. Only two of the players graduated from this talented, accomplished team, and the rest of the players are returning for 2014, coach Mike McLaughlin said. Offensive standouts from the 2013 team are Adirondack League All-Stars Carly Vreugde and Lacey Cormie. They will be backed up by Emma Donnelly, a Senior who scores tough goals, McLaughlin said. Ò Emma is our go-to-the-net girl, sheÕ s a digger,Ó he said. Also predicted to assist in scoring is Kiera Bieber Ñ who played no less than 10 positions in 2013 Ñ as well as Olivia King, who has proven potential. Beiber and Cormie are only Sophomores, but theyÕ ve already proven their talent. Cormie had 13 goals as a 9th grader. Vreugde, a Junior, has also had considerable success, scoring 15 goals last year. McLaughlin said he was counting on a balanced attack in 2014. On the other end of the field, he expects few goals for the opponents, considering that the entire 2013 defensive crew is returning for 2014. Ò WeÕ ve got quite a depth of experienced players, as well as five returning league All-Stars,Ó he said. Veterans include Adirondack League All-Stars Sophomore Nicole Nolan, a fullback, and midfielder Allie Anable, who McLaughlin said was Ò tough.Ó

Ò Allie is solid, the glue that holds the midfield together,Ó he said. She is joined by Andrea Smith, another League All-Star whoÕ s at a fullback position. Besides Donnelly, McLaughlin expects leadership from Jessica Quay, Julia McCabe Ñ both solid fullback defenders Ñ and Josie Owen, considered aggressive in midfield, and Anna Hayden, who is skilled at forward positions. They are joined by Sophomore Hannah Pogonowski who is a tough and versatile, having played both midfield and forward positions. Another returning player is Junior Paige Potter, who anchors the defense as a sweeper-back. Both 2013 goaltenders, Junior Kerry Walker and Sophomore Rachel Shambo, are returning for 2014. Ò WeÕ ve got solid leadership with our Seniors, and our three Juniors who are starting their third year on Varsity,Ó McLaughlin said. He also observed that all six of the teamÕ s Sophomores have Varsity experience. He noted that the team members were excelling at academics as well as sports. McLaughlin added that it was the teamÕ s goal not just to rack up victories and pursue championships, but for everyone on the roster to play their very best every game. Ò These girls are Ô gamers,Õ and the team chemistry is excellent,Ó he said. Ò TheyÕ re passionate about the sport and they love to compete Ñ WeÕ re in good shape for 2014.Ó

Continued from page 16 For the squad, the goals for the season will start with their home tournament. Ò Our team goals for the season include a strong showing in our fall classic and being a contender in post-season play,Ó Colvin said. Colvin said one of the challenges for the season will be working out who will play on defense, but the challenge will mean opportunity for some. Ò As we look to rebuild our defense, there are many opportunities for first year varsity players to earn starting positions,” Colvin said. For the Lady Burghers, it comes down to sticking to their gameplan.
