Folk music with a twist at the Koffee Kat Marco Polio starts with Hall’s songwriting, and from there a rotating cast of collaborators join him both on recordings and on stage. The music Hall creates has a message that reflects the decisions he makes in life. “All my songs are about industrial civilization and technology and their effects on nature and the individual,” Hall said. Adhering to that message, Hall’s work with ROTA attempts to encourage people to interact with one another in the real world instead of online, and to connect people with local culture. “There aren’t a lot of outlets for home-grown, local culture to thrive,” Hall said. “I feel like

APA: Help me help you I

t’s not often the Adirondack Park Agency gets good press. Let this be one of those few times. Media groups — including Denton — tend to use the APA as a convenient punching bag when property rights and economic development seem to take a back seat to environmental concerns. Rightfully so, we should be vigilant watchdogs of state government; however, we should also offer praise when it’s earned. Therefore, what the APA did for Indian Lake recently should be noted. In December 2012, APA Special Assistant for Economic Affairs Dan Kelleher released a marketing study to pinpoint which grocery chains are good candidates for Indian Lake (IGA and the Big M). The community has been without a grocery store for more than three years. This was the first such study Kelleher has compiled since joining the Agency in early 2012, and he’s hoping it won’t be his last. Asked why the APA used its important resources toward this project, we weren’t surprised to hear the same rhetoric we’ve heard for decades, about making sure Adirondack communities are sustainable and great places to live. We’ve heard that answer over and over without much definition for the word “sustainable” when it comes to economic development. Yet we were impressed by the APA’s approach to this project, and Kelleher did something during his Denton interview that government workers rarely choose to do; he explained something in plain English and with an honest answer: “We’re not exactly an organization that can go out and recruit new companies to locate to places. But we can give communities the data that they need to go do that themselves.” The APA is tiny compared to most state agencies with fewer than 60 staffers. So it doesn’t have many resources. In fact, Kelleher is the only person in the Economic Services Unit, and he received help on the Indian Lake marketing study from the two people in the Local Government Services Unit. So it’s true, they can’t go out and create economic development opportunities for Adirondack communities. That’s never really been the promise, though. What the APA has done well is work with towns and villages on local

land use plans and be a cheerleader for economic development, making sure to have a presence at major initiatives and conferences. But we don’t always see the APA’s economic development results on paper like we do with the Indian Lake Grocer Analysis. This shows in black and white that the APA can work within its mission to help communities help themselves. And one of the greatest tools they can provide is data, spelled out in a market analysis that Indian Lake can include with a business plan. Using this information, communities, such as Indian Lake, are now empowered to draft proposals to attract business. That means a bigger tax base, more jobs, and improving communities’ chances of becoming sustainable. So Kelleher is now making his Jerry Maguire plea of “Help me help you.” Communities should contact him (891-4050) if they have ideas for similar marketing studies. As for the elusive definition of sustainability, we applaud the Saranac Lake-based Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA) for its current effort to draft a North Country Regional Sustainability Plan, which should be complete in the spring. The document will focus on liveable communities, economic development, water and waste management, energy, transportation and working landscapes. The ANCA website lists the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority’s definition for sustainability: “Sustainability is living, operating and growing more efficiently, while using fewer resources ... We can also foster communities that have lower costs, more businesses and jobs, and improved quality of life.” We should note that the ANCA Board president is Steve Erman, Kelleher’s predecessor at the APA, and APA Executive Director Terry Martino is the former executive director at ANCA. With their help — and the help of many at these organizations — the Adirondack Park just might be headed in the right direction, both environmentally and economically. And, in plain English, Indian Lake could soon have a new grocery store. —Denton Publications Editorial Board

The Sequester Quest

t’s appropriate that I draft this column flying at 10,000 feet while crossing this beautiful country of ours, on a quick overnight trip to Las Vegas for a publishers’ meeting. As I peer out the window, I ponder what our elected officials will do in the coming week with the March 1 Sequester deadline. For all of our sakes, I hope they’ve worked out a compromise to put the country on a correction course to begin addressing our ever-rising debt load. From this publisher ’s perspective, here are my recommendations to those who ultimately are suppose to be running this country and looking out for our best interest and the generations to come. Mr. President, you won the election. You’ve no further need to keep campaigning. It’s time to govern. I know you think you’ve got the upper hand over the bumbling Republicans, and perhaps you’re thinking this an opportune time to bring them to their knees. Mr. President, please take a lesson from President Lincoln. He and Gen. Grant understood we are all Americans, and standing on the neck of the South would not heal the wounds of the Union. It was time to unite and rebuild. Mr. President it’s within your reach to be the “Great Uniter” or the “Great Divider.” This nation needs to come together. Please use your reelection and your skills as a community organizer to be the ultimate nation organizer. Reach out to the opposition and embrace them as you’ve embraced your own party. Use your powerful office to unite and bring us all into the new future this country so desperately needs now. Mr. Boehner, as Speaker of the House it’s within your power to lead your party and the nation. Current public opinion of the Republican-led house is at an all-time low. If you can lead, you have nowhere to go but up. If you can’t lead the House and this nation to anything more than just further gridlock, then perhaps it’s time to step down and let a new leader seek solutions that enhance the party’s standing and inspire the party faithful. The nation and the economy need an optimistic outlook. We need to restore national pride. We need to put a new luster on America’s world imagine. The world needs American leadership now perhaps

We can continue to drive our elected officials to even greater forms of divisiveness and destroy this country for future generations or we can wake up and smell what we’ve been brewing and start sending the message of national unity that gives our elected officials the green light to move to common ground. It’s time to end this economic nightmare and recognize we’ve each got far more to lose than we’ll ever gain if we keep the country going in the current direction. We need less political cover and partisan rhetoric than we’re currently getting from harebrain stunts like the Sequester, where both parties sign on then blame the other side for its devastating effects. It was always nothing more than a façade, designed to give both parties cover during the election cycle. If both parties could sign on to that goofy plan as the best way to govern, just think what’s next if we don’t demand they set a new course now. It’s time for a new national quest … a United States quest to rediscover the promise and opportunity we owe future generations. Let’s start solving these issues now before it’s too late. f the sparkle you see in MARY DUPREY’S eyes is any indication of the energy and passion she puts into PLATTSBURGH’S BIGGEST LOSERS, her participants better watch out; their lives are about to change! We visited the City Recreation Gym last week and were blown away by the camaraderie, determination and results of this program. Based on the NBC reality show, Plattsburgh’s Biggest Loser, directed by Mary Duprey, combines exercise, nutrition and accountability into a very successful weight loss and life changing program. Biggest Loser begins each fall with an application process. Forty to 50 applications are received by program coaches and col-

lectively they choose the top 25. High blood pressure, diabetes, family history of obesity, heart disease, joint replacements, depression, inability to lead an active family life and infertility are just a few of the physical and emotional reasons that people give as to why they want to participate. Candidates are carefully chosen; weight loss is one factor for consideration; but primarily by candidates having the commitment to creating a healthy life. The six month program kicks off with the Heart Walk. Following the Heart Walk, the bonding begins – group members weigh in and each participant shares the story of how they came to be part of The Biggest Loser’s Club. Biggest Losers continues with two workouts a week sprinkled with guest speakers on nutrition,

fitness, and inspiration. Workouts have great variety and a fun flair such as the number of crunches equals the combined age of the group! Some members of the group join to regain mobility after an injury or illness; some members have permanent physical limitations. The point is to move as you are able. PSUC faculty and staff provide nutritional consultation. Members have created a private Facebook group and this connection keeps them engaged with optional activities in building the habits of an active lifestyle. Certified personal trainers and past participants are the coordinators and leaders, providing creative expertise and active weight loss role models. Jenn LeCuyer serves as the program coordinator for “Walking the Walk.” She has lost 70 pounds and her husband, Jamie, is an “honorary” member, having lost 170 pounds! So far, the biggest loser in their program has lost 110 lbs! Although the loss of one to two pounds per week is the goal, the group also focuses on “non-scale” victories; someone can wear their wedding ring again, another has gained mobility that they’d lost 10 years ago, another is off high blood pressure meds and is no longer diabetic. Climbing a flight of stairs is another victory to boast about! Movement and a positive sense of self are the goals—applause and laughter are the background music to this program. We met Mary, a Certified Personal Trainer, at one of our favorite haunts in Plattsburgh, HOT YOGA! Being a big believer in cross training, Mary is the fit dynamo behind this program. She recently accomplished a dream by receiving her Master’s degree in exercise science. She and her husband set up runs and Mary also hosts a workplace wellness program at Pfizer! Mental health support offered by NAMI Forum to help families cope with a relative’s mental disorder

katherine@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Living with the constant challenges of a family member with a mental illness is very difficult. The National Alliance on Mental Illness of the Champlain Valley would like to offer these families their services. NAMI will host a free Family to Family educational program for families who have loved ones with mental illness with the first of 12 forums beginning on March 6 through May 22. The programs will be held every Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the NAMI offices, 14 Healy Ave. Theresa Bennett, board member with NAMI and certified Family to Family instructor, said the program is designed for family members of people with a mental illness to get together to learn about coping mechanisms, empathy training for understanding how the world looks and sounds through the eyes of someone suffering from an illness and to offer a place just for them. “The most important factor to be learned is the basic belief that this is an organic brain disorder, centered in the brain as heart disease centers in the heart,” Bennett said. “We have many services but this program is just for family members to have a safe place to learn and share frustrations and

concerns with people who may share their experiences.” The program is designed to be a safe place where families of those affected by mental illness can vent and learn from others how to manage. The free, 12-week program will cover a range of topics including current information on major brain disorders; the latest information about medications, including side effects and strategies for promoting medication adherence; information about the most effective treatments available, what to do in a crisis; how to handle the hospitalization of loved ones, and relapse; problem solving and communication skills; advocating for a loved one; how to work with professionals; and lastly taking care of themselves so caretakers are better able to help a loved one. For Bennett, the journey with NAMI began when she sought guidance for learning about mental illness when a close member of her family was going through a rough time. “Their services were wonderful for us, there is no intake, they don’t ask personal information before they help you, you can call and get help and be off the phone in two min-

utes and sometimes that is all you have when someone you are caring for is having a hard time,” Bennett said. Her family member sought treatment and eventually went through recovery. Afterward Bennett said she had a strong desire to start looking for ways to help other people going through what she and her family went through and became certified with NAMI National. Aleka’s restaurant By Shaun Kittle shaun@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The food at Aleka's in downtown Plattsburgh is more than a meal—it’s a celebration. The restaurant is co-owned by Peter Kritziotis and Silvio Amaya, who also owns Giuseppe's Pizza Shop in Plattsburgh. Kritziotis has owned restaurants in the area for 12 years, and said the idea behind his newest venture was not to compete with the other businesses downtown, but to instead offer something new. Since Kritziotis and Amaya have been friends for more than 10 years, they decided to fuse the two types of food they specialize in—Greek and Italian—under one roof. The result was Aleka's, which opened Feb. 9. The restaurant is named after Kritziotis’ daughter, Aleka, who will be four years old in March. “Downtown Plattsburgh does not need another pizzeria,” Kritziotis said. “That’s not what we’re trying to be.” Aleka’s does have a few pizzas on its menu, but it isn’t their specialty—that’s their traditional Greek fare, like souvlaki and gyro, and their homemade Italian dishes, like shrimp scampi and chicken marsala. There are also items on the menu for people with gluten free, vegetarian and vegan diets. And, with the exception of the mozzarella sticks and chicken fingers, everything is handmade and cooked to order. “We make everything here the way I would make it in my own kitchen,” Kritziotis said. To wash it all down, Aleka’s will soon have a selection of Greek beers, which are comparable to Belgian and German beers, to add to its selection of international wines. The beverages were hand-picked to compliment the dishes offered at the restaurant, a way of rounding out the dining atmosphere Kritziotis and Amaya strive to create. “Customers might have to wait a little longer for their food when they come in here, but that's part of the experience,” Kritziotis said. “This restaurant is based on celebrating food every time you visit.”

Opening a new business is always a risk, but that's what Kritziotis said Plattsburgh needs. “Downtown needs people to take a risk,” he said. “What I want is to be a staple in Plattsburgh. I want to offer people something different to help bring them downtown so other businesses can grow, too. ” The robust business Aleka’s has experienced might indicate that Kritziotis is succeeding at drawing people downtown, and the loyalty of his staff might be evidence that he is becoming a staple in the area, too. PLATTSBURGH — The Board of Trustees of the ClintonEssex-Franklin Library System voted to transfer ownership of the bookmobile to Clinton County at their Jan. 28 meeting. The bookmobile, which was removed from service in Dec. 2011 due to cost considerations, will serve as a command vehicle for Clinton County’s Office of Emergency Services. The vehicle, which is in sound mechanical and cosmetic condition, is equipped with its own on-board generator. Eric Day, Director of the Clinton County Office of Emergency Services, said he plans to repurpose the vehicle with the necessary communications gear and other accessories to make the unit functional as a Mobile Command Vehicle.

PLATTSBURGH — The United Way of the Adirondack Region, Inc. is teaming up with the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau and Project H.E.L.P. at SUNY Plattsburgh for the Annual Day of Caring on April 27. This volunteer-driven event has hosted projects ranging from cleaning homes of senior citizens, helping complete projects for regional human service agencies, building homes through Habitat for Humanity and cleaning up local attractions. SUNY schools to go tray-less in an effort to reduce food waste PLATTSBURGH — Key Members of the Student Assembly met recently and have started to push the idea of removing trays from the SUNY campus dining facilities to support environmentally conscious action. Elected by their peers to represent the 467,000 SUNY students across the state, the Student Assembly’s Environmental Affairs Committee discussed the best practices and standards for SUNY campuses statewide. This announcement comes as part of a larger campaign to push for a more environmentally conscious SUNY. The SUNY Student Assembly Environmental Affairs committee suggested that all SUNY institutional dinning facilities go tray-less. The committee believes that this action will aid in furthering the environmentally friendly efforts to improve: student health, water and food conservation, and institutional money savings. Director of Environmental Af-

fairs for SUNY Student Assembly Gwendolyn Nieves spoke about a study conducted at the State University at Fredonia and cited from their Waste Assessment that “On average a student will throw out half a pound of food per meal throughout the year. This will collectively turn into 209,000 pounds of food annually (post-consumer), hence costing a SUNY college roughly $750,000 in waste.” The study further indicates that on days when trays were not utilized by students the food waste was reduced by 40 percent. Kevin Rea, President of the Student Assembly and a member of the SUNY Board of Trustees announced the tray-removal as a part of a broader environmental initiative undertaken by the SUNY Student Assembly. He went on to say, “This will be a great opportunity to become more environmentally conscious in a way that benefits both SUNY and our planet.

“The two musicians coming from Canada are genuine folk musicians,” Hall said. “They’re writing and playing and speaking about what is going on in their lives and in their culture.” The word ‘punk’ often implies something else, though, and that something is loud, unapologetic and abrasive.
