Canadian Consulate General addresses North Country Last year, the Canadian consulate general in Buffalo was consolidated with the Canadian consulate in New York City. John Prato, the Canadian Consulate General based in New York City, greeted representatives of the media, local businesses, agencies, colleges and municipalities in Clinton County at the event. New York Assemblywoman Janet Duprey, Canadian Foreign Policy and Diplomacy Officer Rachael Homewood and Canadian Trade Commissioner Linda Soltis were also present. “The two-way relationship between our two countries is $742 billion,” Prato said. “That means there are 400,000 people crossing the border every day. That’s $2 billion a day.”

PLATTSBURGH—Co-operation between Canadian and American economic ventures was discussed at the North Country Chamber of Commerce on Monday, March 25. In what Chamber President Garry Douglas called a “special opportunity to solidify our friendship with our partner to the north,” the meeting focused on utilizing that relationship to economically benefit both countries. “Canada is our largest trading partner, and dwarfs many of our other trading partners,” said Congressman Bill Owens, who attended the event. “This is an educational process, and it is also to our benefit because we are able to attract Canadian businesses to come into our communities.”

On Friday, April 5, “The United States of ALEC,” a documentary by award-winning journalist Bill Moyer, will be shown in Plattsburgh State’s Yokum Hall. Susan Lerner, executive director of Common Cause New York, will introduce the film and lead a post-viewing discussion. The event is sponsored by Plattsburgh-based People for Positive Action. “It’s a film exposé of a national organization that, for 40 years, as a not-for-profit agency, meaning tax exempt, has subverted American government policy, politics and political process by preparing and submitting biased draft legislation to state legislatures through its 2,000 legislative members and its corporate adjuncts,” said Bill Cowan, member for People for Positive Action. Registering as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization means ALEC can legally avoid restrictions placed on lobby groups. But, Cowan said, ALEC still creates model bills, about 200 of which are passed yearly. “We feel that everybody, regardless of their political leanings, re-

I watched this film and it scared me.” Although nothing ALEC is doing is necessarily illegal, critics contend that their actions aren’t in the people’s best interest, and that it is unethical for a corporate-funded group to act as a charity while influencing legislation. “People have to decide whether they want to vote for money or for people,” Shemo said. “The first step is knowing about it.” For more information on ALEC, visit their website at alec.org. Small business owners to host Ladies Night Out Expo By Katherine Clark katherine@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — A night for fun pampering and business collaboration for local women will come together for a “Diva Shopping Expo” at the Plattsburgh Comfort Inn on April 12. The Ladies Small Business Network will host the event to promote female-owned area businesses, preview available local services and products, and raise money for Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). “It’s going to be a kind of fun evening,” said Tracy Graves, chairperson of the event. More than 20 vendors will attend the event to offer samplings of products, demonstrations of services and sales of both. “Pretty much anything you can think of for a night of pampering we will have at the expo,” Graves said. There will be more than 25 different businesses on hand along with a Chinese auction, snacks and giveaways. There will be handbags and jewelry, beauty treatments, astrology readings, chocolate makers, pampered chef product sales, and more. Representatives from Designs by Decoupage, I’m Sew Crazie Sewn Gifts, Avon, Window Dressing’s, Liberty Travel with Julie Liberty, Happy Tails Dog Biscuits and Accessories, Tupperware, Arbonne International, Daisy Blue Naturals, Silpada Jewelry, Cierra Ashley Scent Warmers, Danielle’s De-

sign, Jam Berry Nails and Nature’s Daughter make-up products. Consultants from It Works, a weight loss wrap provider, Isotonix Products, and ONE, options for northeast in esthetics will also be available for consultations and demonstrations. Graves, owner of All Things Diva and chairperson for the expo, said the event should be a fun-filled night of pampering and networking with other businesswomen. The event costs $5 at the door and benefits MADD. “With prom around the corner we feel it is a great time to promote monies to this charity and also a wonderful time to help independent women jump-start their businesses for spring,” said Graves. As many members of the network are mothers, Graves said the idea to raise money for MADD was near to their hearts. “It is always a fun time. Years past the proceeds have been donated to the Susan. G. Komen Race for the Cure ladies and other times it was the Fitzpatrick Cancer Center,” said Graves. “Talking with the people from MADD they were not only grateful that we would be raising money for the organization but were almost more enthusiastic about getting the message back out there about the dangers of driving intoxicated.” The network is open for community members and meets the second Wednesday of

Plattsburgh Air Force Base Museum taking shape By Shaun Kittle

If you go:

shaun@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH—A new museum is in the works for Plattsburgh, and everyone is invited to help get it started. A meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 3, in the War of 1812 Museum on the old Air Force base to discuss plans for the Plattsburgh Air Force Base Museum. The museum will be located at 31 Washington Rd., the former home of the War of 1812 Museum, and will encompass the period the base was active, from 1955-1995. “We started our (War of 1812) museum in that building, and then we outgrew it and moved across the road,” said Keith Herkalo, president of the Battle of Plattsburgh Association board. Wednesday’s meeting will inform people about how they can get involved, either by donating money, time, or memorabilia,

and will also work toward raising awareness about the project. “We had an information What: Meeting to discuss meeting two weeks ago to the Plattsburgh Air Force Base see if there’s any interest, Museum and there definitely is,” When: Wednesday, April 3, Herkalo said. “We had 27 at 7 p.m. local people show up, and Where: The War of 1812 now it’s going across the Museum at 31 Washington country.” Road During that meeting on This event is free and open March 20, the Plattsburgh Air Force Base Museum was proposed and approved by the Battle of Plattsburgh Association’s board of directors. Paperwork for the project is now awaiting registration and

filing by the New York State Department of State. In the meantime, Herkalo said friends of those involved with the museum and people who used to live in the area have been contacting him daily and offering to help. Other organizations have also offered to help, the like the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, whose apprenticeship program has agreed to provide all the labor to put in the electric heat and run the wiring in the building. Some clerical concerns need to be worked out, too. “We need to establish the mechanism for receiving that material, controlling it, cataloging it and describing it,” Herkalo said. “All that stuff takes time.” If everything goes smoothly, Herkalo hopes the museum can be open by Spring 2014. “Most of the people that were here are still around, they’re still alive, and they want a place where they can collectively remember the time that they were here,” Herkalo said.

Adirondack icons to show different facet in show at BluSeed By Katherine Clark

katherine@denpubs.com SARANAC LAKE — Maurice Kenny’s poetry has been heard around the world and Tim Fortune’s watercolors and oil paintings are well known, but in a show merging the talent of the two well-known Adirondack artists, a new side of both will be displayed. Kenny and Fortune will merge their art for a show titled “Icons - Lunacy & Scribblings” at the BluSeed Studios, 24 Cedar Street in Saranac Lake. The show will feature photographs and one painting by Fortune and Kenny will be exhibiting a group of intuitive “scribbles” based off his poetry. There will be a special Meet the Artists Opening Reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 5. Adirondack painter Fortune — whose oil and water color paintings are on display at Small Fortune Studios on Main Street

— will reveal a different side of his artistic ventures with an exhibit of his photography. The exhibit is titled “Lunacy,” and includes a series of pieces taken of the moon and grid collages of manipulated images of the moon. “I think people shouldn’t come with any expectations,” said Carol Voffler, artistic director at BluSeed Studios. “They are going to be refreshed knowing artists can have new breakthroughs. There should be some nice surprises in the works.” Fortune’s work includes large-detailed oil paintings of trees, water scenes and other Adirondack scenes. The photography he will be showing will be part of a lunar series of moon reflections taken over 10 years ago. Kenny, a native Adirondack poet, will exhibit his whimsical illustrations that are inspired by his poetry. “People expect whimsical art to illustrate a poem, but it is the poem that illustrates the whimsical art,” Kenny said. “People will say I’m a writer and he’s a painter of images but I am a

Prato said he thinks both Canada and the United States can do better. Prato said energy, specifically the proposed XL Pipeline, is also an important consideration, as is hydroelectricity. To improve across-the-border businesses, Prato said some regulations should be considered. He mentioned impediments to productivity, such as differences in packaging sizes and ingredients for the same product

from page 1 His concerns, he said, were focused on finance, investment and innovation— helping Canadian companies expand into the United States using Plattsburgh as a base. Canadian economic growth has slightly slowed over the past several years, and

in each country, a result of varying regulations, should be looked at and considered. Companies must therefore run two separate lines of the same product. “That means we can’t compete as effectively as we should be with the world,” Prato said. “It means our profits aren’t as great and our tax bases aren’t as great.” “I may be based in New York, but I’ve made a commitment to Upstate New York.”

Viewpoint

Canada’s border policy Holy Days still relevant T should be revisited W

e all make mistakes. Sometimes, they can cost us money, a job, or even earn us time in jail. As individuals, we can learn from those mistakes, smooth over the rough patch our life has become, and move on to become positive forces within our communities. In all but the most extreme circumstances, our society makes allowances for such things. We live and we learn. Now, try explaining that to a border control officer on the way to Montreal with a mini van full of family members looking forward to spending a day at the Biodome. Chances are, if you have had more than two arrestable offenses in your lifetime you'll be making a quick U-turn back onto I-87 and will soon find yourself discussing other options with your perturbed family. This is a familiar scenario in the North Country, one that is as frustrating as it is puzzling. If you haven't heard this one before, take note—if you have committed two arrestable offenses in your lifetime, you can be denied access to Canada. Some offenses, like a DUI, a lesser form of a DWI in New York State, only take one strike before you’re out. Canada has a deal with the U.S. that allows its officers access to U.S. databases; specifically, arrest records. Some infractions, like driving while under the influence, are considered serious crimes in Canada. On the surface, it doesn't seem so bad. They're just trying to keep criminals at bay, right? But what about the man who was a hellion in college, and was arrested for defacing a street sign one night, and for getting into a bar fight another. Sure, those things should be punished, but there is a line between scofflaw and malefactor. Let's fast forward 20 years. That same hellion is now married, the head of a company, has two children he’s now getting ready to put through college, and is

an active member of his community, the same one he raised a ruckus in as a 20something. Is he not redeemed? At what point should someone's dues be paid? The DUI issue recently came up at a press conference held at the North Country Chamber of Commerce to discuss the economic relationship between the United States and Canada. It was a cheery affair, complete with resplendent hope for co-operation and the economic growth of both countries. Companies will transcend the border, jobs will be created and we’ll all live happily together. But there's a hitch. If a company from Canada is built in Plattsburgh and requires its workers to be trained in Canada, those who can't cross the border are out of luck. There are ways around this, but the process can take up to a year to complete. To simply apply for an application to be granted entry can cost between $200 and $1,000, and there is no guarantee you will be allowed into Canada afterward. In some corners of the North Country, there is some animosity toward Canadians. It’s been mentioned in editorials throughout the region, and it was brought up at the chamber meeting. Perhaps making it easier to get into the country would be a logical first step to improving understanding for one another. Both countries would benefit from easier access, not only in tourist dollars, but in terms of the newly proposed job growth, too. We are not trivializing the seriousness of drinking and driving, but it does seem prudent for Canada to begin rethinking its “no tolerance” policy. It will only serve to strengthen the ties between two countries whose ties are already strong. Drawing the line at felonies is a better way to keep the criminals out while still allowing those of us who have made a mistake to get on with our lives and get into Canada.

—Denton Publications Editorial Board

here seems to be so much head shaking craziness all around us these days. From senseless shootings and violence, out of control politics, over the top excesses that challenge others to push the envelope to even further extremes, to worries about unmanned drones flying overhead and home appliances spying and sharing valuable personal information. So many of today’s modern creations boggle the mind, even from just a short while back in time. But are we using them for the betterment of our society or are they becoming the catalyst that drive us to these wild extreme measures? I can remember a time not long ago when life was slower and it seemed as though the majority of the country shared similar values. Collectively the nation knew right from wrong and in doing so kept us focused on life’s daily challenges, family and a shared sense of community. These values are still on display today but we also know that many among us are afraid to speak out and express their views for fear of retaliation or humiliation. As a nation we’ve become more driven by a vocal minority then a silent majority. The computing power of today’s cheapest smart phone far exceeds the computing power used by the NASA space capsule that first put man on the Moon. It seems the power and capabilities of these little devices are increasing so rapidly one has to wonder where it will lead. And are these technological marvels becoming too smart and too controlling over our lives? Technology and its inventions can be a distraction that changes the focus of human purpose. I’m concerned that many of the problems facing society today are driven by a material belief that is placing greater faith in human self reliance than placing our trust in God, the true creator and supreme being. As we prepare for the celebrations of Passover and Easter, once again we see government entities opting for political correctness by removing the word Easter from traditional celebrations in schools and communities. They claim to be doing so out of fear of offending but in reality it is fear of lawsuits by a small but vocal minority. Like Christmas, Easter has become increasingly commercialized. But by removing

the true meaning, we allow the holiday to become nothing more than a Hallmark event. We no longer collectiveDan Alexander ly look for divine Thoughts from support and no Behind the Pressline longer speak out when obvious actions erode the origins of our nation built on the freedoms endowed by our creator. I wonder if in time, as technology expands and we become more and more reliant on technology, will it be used wisely? Can we maintain control over the information or will it be used to negatively affect society? I also wonder if something as remarkable as the smart phone is becoming the golden idol of choice in society today? Are we becoming seduced by its capabilities, its dynamic intelligence and vibrant display? People seem so captivated by their phones today they simply can’t put them down. The smart phone allure is so powerful it is having serious effects on both workplace productivity and personal relationships. Now don’t get me wrong, I too am a smart phone user but as this technology advances we must not let it be the central point around which our lives revolve. Personal relationships, love of family and neighbor and the recognition of our creator must remain paramount in our lives or the problems that plague our society will only grow worse. Our ability to solve interpersonal disagreements won’t happen when our mind, eyes and thumbs are focused on the cyber world, a capable distraction, but never the end all. Faith-based democracies, like the United States and Israel, are places where the freedom to practice and express ones faith has flourished and survived, because they’ve remained true to their founding origins. These are important facts to keep in mind this week as we celebrate the holy events of Passover and Easter, keeping in mind their historical relevance, which is very much still a priority in our lives today. weet, spring themed windows draw the downtown Plattsburgh stroller in to DRESS CODE. A boutique feel, hundreds of styles, and friendly fashion advice are what attracts new customers and keep regulars coming back. Oh, and we would be remiss if we did not mention…DRESS CODE is a consignment shop! DRESS CODE owner, Julie Woodley, fulfilled a life path dream when she opened the shop and her success, she believes, is based on always saying “YES” (this will happen!) and never “maybe”. Julie’s hair defines her style; spontaneous and fun, and the clothes in DRESS CODE are always changing and inspiring, just like Julie. Julie opened her doors 4 years ago with teens in mind, but DRESS CODE has grown, moved, and changed into a shop for all ages. Her core customer group was originally 19 to 27, but with her move to the corner of Bridge Street and City Hall Place, she has tripled her business and really grown to suit all ages, male and female. Shopping at DRESS CODE makes you socially responsible and stylish while supporting the emergence of a vibrant downtown scene, or as we like to say, “Scene in Plattsburgh”. Julie believes in small business in Plattsburgh and works together with other small businesses to promote downtown as a destination. Staying true to her original plan, Julie keeps merchandise highly organized to provide the shopper with an easy to look, always changing appeal. She gets a little help from her 3 daughters and a lot of help from her sole employee, Kim. Together Kim and Julie are a fashion flurry! Perhaps you thought you had to travel to Burlington, Albany, the internet, or even NYC to find unique pieces by your favorite labels, but not true. You can find Forever 21, H & M, Charlotte Russe, Banana Republic, Ann Taylor Loft, Free People, Hollister, American Eagle, Columbia, EMS and Carhartt, all at amazing prices! DRESS CODE also offers designer bags, shoes, and cloth-

Lost and found: Plattsburgh author Lorna Earl’s memoir By Shaun Kittle

shaun@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH—Lorna Earl has found a way to smile in the face of some difficult moments in her life. It is the kind of hardship many can relate to, the kind of hardship Earl believes can teach you about yourself. After a string of less-than-favorable circumstances, which included her husband leaving her and being diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome and immune dysfunction in 2001, she began to write. And, to her surprise, people wanted more. “I just wanted to remember a time when I could laugh,” Earl said. “It started off like therapy for me. I'd write these stories about my life and share them with family and friends, and people would love them.” The effects of chronic fatigue disorder are much like what the disorder ’s name implies. It makes those who have it feel run down, but it also comes with a host of other symptoms which can include sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, panic attacks and a feeling Earl described as “like having the bed spins, but it never goes away.” It was that spinning feeling that made it particularly difficult for Earl to continue her career as a sociology professor at Plattsburgh State. “I had to moderate my work, and switched to online classes,” Earl said. “I loved teaching and be-

ing part of the academic environment.” As time went on, Earl found the symptoms of her condition were becoming increasingly difficult to handle. Insomnia became a regular occurrence, a side effect of dealing with the constant feeling of overstimulation, and then fatigue set in. “I thought I'd be teaching until a ripe old age, and they’d have to wheel me out of the classroom,” Earl said with a laugh. “But I just knew that I couldn’t continue.” It was not long before the condition forced her into early retirement in 2006. She was only 49. It was a difficult time for her, but saying things with a laugh characterizes Earl's outlook on life, and it is a prevalent theme found throughout the stack of short stories she has written. Those stories led to a blog, Lorna’s Voice, and the abundance of positive responses she received online inspired her to write a memoir, “How was I supposed to Know? The Adventures of a Girl Whose Name Means Lost.” It's true that in Old English, Lorna means lost and to Earl, that definition carries weight. The book, she said, is really about a person's journey and self discovery. Sometimes, all it takes is looking backward to discover the person you've been trying to find has been waiting there all along. “You don't have to be defined by these issues,” Earl said. “You can come from an extraordinary set of

a discussion. “The belief I have in this book is that it can be therapeutic for others,” Earl said. “If I can get this book in the hands of people who can help other people, I’ll feel like I’m still contributing.”

The goal is to begin having quarterly openings at the different locations, starting in July. “We’ve had interest from other businesses and artists, and we’re just trying to get them all on the same timeline,” Arm-

from page 1 You might have also caught him crouching in a stand of skunk cabbage by the Saranac River, shifting from side to side, looking for angles. Nolland’s work includes landscapes, the motion of water, and getting close to his subjects. Nolland doesn't have to etch his love of nature photography into a tree trunk. That would be distasteful. Instead, he can just point his lens at two bracken fern fiddleheads and capture their figures nodding toward each other to form the shape of a heart. Take a trip to the Best Western Plus in Plattsburgh and see for yourself—he has 20 photos on display in the hotel’s new gallery space. Some of his larger pieces also adorn the walls throughout the hotel. The exhibition, called “Seenery,” is part of the North Country Cultural Center for the Arts’ off-site gallery program, which includes three locations throughout the city. “I don't think as a resident we always appreciate how much we have,” said Bob Smith, owner of the Best Western in Plattsburgh. “I know from being in the hospitality business and talking to our guests that they view our area with a lot of respect, and they love the area.” Nolland’s exhibit opened Tuesday, March 19, and included a wine tasting sponsored by the Champlain Wine Company.

strong said. But every location is different, so some locations are better suited for certain types of art than others. “We’ve literally just formalized the process, so we’re branding it and putting together contracts for both the artists and gallery sites,” said Janine Scherline, NCCCA’s executive director. To mark the beginning of the program’s next quarter, two more off-site galleries will open in July—one at the Plattsburgh Public Library and the other at CVPH. A current off-site gallery, the Plattsburgh Development Corp., will also be switching Penelope Clute’s and Gail Kemp’s “Outdoor Textures” photography exhibit to “Cherish Solitude,” an exhibition of photographs and paintings by Bobby Ziemba and Suzanne Doin on Friday, March 29. Both Armstrong and Scherline said they’d like to get more artists involved, but for now it is by invitation only. Businesses interested in hosting an off-site gallery should contact Janine Scherline at director@plattsburgharts.org. Artists interested in having their work shown should contact Shawna Armstrong at gallery@plattsburgharts.org. Visit plattsburgharts.org for more information.

Kriff isn't a doctor, and he's hardly a physical therapist, either, but he does understand mattresses, and he knows how to help people pick the right one. “The defining characteristic of a mattress is what’s inside of it, what provides the support,” Kriff said. “They all have their advantages and disadvantages.” Coil springs are the most popular, come in different varieties and have been around the longest. Synthetic Foams include the inexpensive polyfoam and memory foam, which is anti-microbial and dust mite proof. There are also latex rubber mattresses, which are made from a material derived from rubber plants. Although latex is still used in inner-spring mattresses, full-blown latex mattresses are no longer common. Kriff explained that memory foam has been the mattress of choice for people who need pressure relief. It forms a mold around the person's body, keeping them in the same position all night. This can be especially good for people who sleep on their side, as it can prevent limbs from falling asleep. People with poor circulation can benefit from this type of support, but individuals who are heavy or are not able to
