‘Race for Stace’ returns Saturday to honor Stacey Lynn Frechette By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com
This Saturday’s Race for Stace honors the life of the late Stacey Lynn Frechette, seen at far right, with her brother, Justin, and sister, Meghan. Frechette’s life was cut tragically short in a February 2007 automobile accident. File photo
PLATTSBURGH — The life of one North Country woman lives on through an event held in her memory. The 3rd annual Race for Stace will take place this Saturday, April 24, at the PARC Oval, remembering the life of Stacey Lynn Frechette. Stacey was a 24-yearold woman who lost her life in a tragic accident on State Route 9 while traveling from Chazy to Plattsburgh in February 2007. The event, which centers around a five-kilometer walk/run, has been held since
2008 and has grown ever since, said Stacey’s brother, Justin B. Frechette. “Last year, we had about 475 people participate, which was even better than our first year,” he said. “This year, we hope to have more than 500. We want to keep building on what we’ve done.” The event raises money toward the Stacey Lynn Frechette Scholarship Fund, which gives $1,500 annually to a local high school senior and gymnast looking to further his or her education. Stacey, who
was a teacher at Mooers Elementary School at the time of her death, was a former gymnast. Among other achievements, she was named an all-star scholar athlete while attending Seton Catholic High School, and became a six-time Section VII and Champlain Valley Athletic Conference gymnastics champion. Stacey continued to compete while attending the State University of New York at Brockport, until a severe back injury ended

In memory of Heather By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com
PLATTSBURGH — When 29-year-old Heather Smith passed away in an all-terrain-vehicle accident March 28, it took just two days for her family to come up with a way to memorialize her. Smith, a former cross-country track runner, had been training for the City of Plattsburgh Half-Marathon for three months. “She was excited [for the race],” explained her fiancé, John Moody. “It was for a good cause and she really liked the idea of it.” The half-marathon raised money for the Michael J. Fox Foundation, in the fight against Parkinson’s disease. “Right from the moment she heard about it, she got on it and registered,” Moody said. “That was all she talked about.” “She always wanted to run a
marathon,” added her father, Lee Smith. “So, she figured a half-marathon would be a start.” After the accident, Moody made contact with City of Plattsburgh Recreation Department superintendent Steve Peters and event organizer Stephanie Desautels. “We called them to see what we could do,” he recalled. “Within 10 minutes they were like, ‘Come right over.’ They were so helpful.” From the discussion Moody had with
Peters and Desautels, it was decided Smith’s family would walk the marathon in her memory. During the half-marathon April 18, Smith’s family members — each wearing a T-shirt with her picture on it — were stationed at each mile marker, with her sister, Ashley Leinbach, taking the first leg. At mile 12, the whole family joined together to finish the 13.1-mile race. “When I [got to] 13 miles, I just kind of ran the rest of the way for Heather,”
said Leinbach. “I wanted to run across for her. I know how it feels to be in her shoes.” “Everybody was yelling and cheering her on,” she added, crying. “I got to walk in her shoes for a minute.” At the end of the race, with a large crowd of supporters cheering them on, each member of Smith’s family received a medal all of the racers received upon finishing. “I know she’s here now,” said Lee Smith. “She supported us through this.”
Students banding together for a day of community service PLATTSBURGH — State University of New York at Plattsburgh students will lead a concentrated day of service at several sites throughout the Plattsburgh area for the third time this academic year. More than 100 SUNY Plattsburgh students are slated to complete volunteer projects Saturday, April 24, working in many instances side by side with members of the Plattsburgh community, benefitting individuals and organizations ranging from the North Country Cultural Center for the Arts and the Plattsburgh Community Garden Group to senior citizens in their own homes and in nursing homes. SUNY Plattsburgh sponsored its first large-scale community-wide day of service Oct. 24, 2009, on National Make-A-Difference Day. The inaugural event saw more than 100 students volunteer throughout the community, receiving positive feedback from a number of organizations for their efforts. The college also backed a service day Feb. 13, an effort focused largely at helping local senior cit-

izens at nursing homes and at private residences. In addition, students working with Project H.E.L.P, a student-driven organization looking to engage interested students in volunteer experiences throughout the Plattsburgh area, have logged more than 4,000 hours of volunteer service at local sites. As with the two previous large-scale service days, student volunteers will work in various capacities for a wide range of organizations. A work crew of 20 students will assist volunteers from the North Country Cultural Center for the Arts in maintenance work on the interior of the historic Strand Theatre. Another group will help members of the Plattsburgh Community Garden Group prepare the garden for the upcoming growing season. Another team will assist workers at Evergreen Valley Nursing Home by completing exterior maintenance tasks and playing games with the senior citizen residents. Point au Roche State Park will also benefit from the service of SUNY students. A number of students will be assigned to the park to work with Park Man-

ager Christopher Case in readying the site for the park’s "Healthy Parks-Healthy People" eco-fair Saturday, May 8. Students are also slated to volunteer with the Plattsburgh Interfaith Food Shelf, JCEO HeadStart of Clinton County, the Adirondack Humane Society, and the Plattsburgh Corps of The Salvation Army. Project H.E.L.P. and the Plattsburgh Circle, Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership honor society, are co-sponsoring the service day. Volunteers represent a broad group of students, from international student organizations to college fraternal organizations, SUNY Plattsburgh student ambassadors to individuals who just wanted to give back to their community through donating their time and efforts. For more information, call the Project H.E.L.P. office at 564-3648 or 564-4830, or contact Benjamin Pomerance at 563-1744 or pome3316@mail.plattsburgh.edu.

Benefit Saturday for Gloria Duso, cancer survivor By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com
BEEKMANTOWN — Gloria Duso will tell you — cancer sucks. In fact, it’s even printed on a T-shirt she proudly wears from time to time. “My daughter found this on the Internet and knew I would love it, with our sense of humor,” she said. Duso said it’s her sense of humor that’s played a big part in her surviving two bouts with cancer and in her facing her third round with the disease. In 1989, doctors found Duso had a sacral tumor on her colon, leading her to undergo six weeks of radiation therapy in Boston, Mass., and undergo a colostomy. “I figured better that than dead,” Duso said with a laugh. The healing process after an evacuation of the tumor took almost a year. Duso’s husband, Stephen, helped by assisting her with her day-to-day medical needs like changing bandages. “My husband, God bless him, has been just beyond what anybody could want for a spouse,” she said. “I never could have made it without him.” Four years later, Duso went to her primary care physician complaining of a loss of her sense of smell. Though Duso said she never found out the reason, doctors found and eventually removed a small tumor from her brain.
To my patients and fellow medical providers,It is with great regret that we announce the closing of North Country Neurology. Difficult circumstances have led us to move closer to family in New Hampshire. Some of you are fighting insurmountable illness. You are our heroes. We will miss the rugged terrain of the Adirondacks and the delightful sparkle of Lake Champlain that are personified in the inner strength, Yankee no-nonsense and clever wit of its inhabitants. The office will be closed to patient visits and call after June 30, 2010. Every attempt will be made to schedule patients who may have had appointments scheduled after that time to be seen earlier. I remain available on a consultive basis to my colleagues until that time and will see new patients. No refills for prescription medications will be issued to patients not seen in 2010.
“It was a very short process. Compared to the other one, it was a walk in the park,” she said. Then, last May, Duso went to her doctor with pains she thought were related to her gall bladder. However, an even worse diagnosis was given — an inoperable form of liver cancer. “It’s a pretty rare form of cancer with no definitive cure right now,” Duso explained. “So, it’s a matter of finding something that can extend your life with a reasonable quality of life.” Duso recently retired from her 38-year career with CVPH Medical Center, and now takes things “one day at a time.” She’s currently undergoing chemotherapy and, in a few months, will undergo another medical evaluation to see if the treatments were successful. “This wasn’t how I planned on ending my career,” she said. “That says it all,” said Duso’s sister, Cynthia TrudoHamilton, as she looked at her sister ’s T-shirt. “She’s a testament to faith and love. That’s why she’s still here today.” This Saturday, April 24, Duso will be surrounded by people she loves as a benefit is held for her at Gilligan’s Getaway, 7160 State Route 9, Plattsburgh, from 12-6 p.m. The event will consist of food, games, raffles, auctions and face painting for children. Performances by local bands Angry Neighbors, Nite Train, Jay Walken Band, The Mongrels, The

Four Fathers, and Steve Borst will round out the event. Admission will be $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 3 and older and free for children younger than 3. Donations are being accepted for the auctions and raffles. Those interested in making a donation or more information may contact Trudo-Hamilton at 335-4437.

Fair to raise awareness this Sunday By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Every person can play a part in making the planet a better place. That’s the point the Champlain Valley Family Center ’s Learn and Serve America Program and the League of Women Voters of the Plattsburgh Area will make as they host their annual Environmental/Global Awareness Fair this Sunday, April 25, at Champlain Centre, 60 Smithfield Blvd. Learn and Serve coordinator Karen McCarthy said this year ’s event appears to have more people set to participate than in previous years. Participants will consist of Plattsburgh City School District and Saranac Middle School students, Girl Scouts and other concerned citizens and local organizations teaching the public ways to protect the planet. Currently, 25 booths are planned to display information about environmental and global issues. “We’ll have information about issues like recycling, the environment and other topics like hunger and obesity that are considered global issues,” explained McCarthy. “[The students]

have been studying what we can do to help the planet and they’re going to show people in our community what they should know.” “They’re really hoping people will stop, pay attention and maybe learn something,” she added. Barbara Landes, chairwoman of the league’s environmental committee, said she’s looking forward to the event, which furthers efforts to educate youths and the community in general about global issues. “We want the next generation interested in things like recycling. We want them to be aware of their impact,” said Landes. “And, it’s a boost for to them to see the community take interest. That’s why we do this. We want to educate the community.” This Sunday’s event will be held from 12-2 p.m. Assemblywoman Janet L. Duprey and Plattsburgh Town Supervisor Bernard C. Bassett will be among speakers who will kick-off the event at noon in the interior courtyard in front of Gander Mountain. For more information about the fair or for those interested in participating, contact McCarthy by phone at 562-9009 or e-mail at lsa@cvfamilycenter.org.

What’s on your plate? Plattsburgh High School to host conference focusing on local foods By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Where does my food come from? What makes a food organic? Where in my area can I find the most nutritious food possible? These are just a few questions that will be answered as Cornell Cooperative Extension hosts “Eating Local Yet? Finding and Using Local Foods,” Thursday, May 6, at Plattsburgh High School. Conference organizer Bernadette Logozar, local foods specialist and a rural and agricultural development specialist with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Franklin County, said the conference was designed in response to the needs expressed by North Country residents. “Many people are interested in buying local, but they don’t necessarily know where to find it, when to find it or what’s available,” said Logozar. “If you don’t know what to ask or how to ask, you might not ask the questions and you might not make the purchase. So, this conference is meant to help consumers ask those questions.” The conference will feature keynote speaker Dr. Jennifer L. Wilkins, a nutritional science senior extension

associate with the Community Food Systems Project at Cornell University. Wilkins, creator of the first regional food guide in the U.S., will discuss how consumers can plan a diet using locally-grown foods, the health aspects of eating local foods, and how a local food system supports community food security. “It is a good idea to learn how to eat locally for several important reasons,” Wilkins said in a statement, “your health, the health of your community, and for a sustainable future.” During the conference, nutritionist Martha Pickard of the Adirondack North Country Association will give tips on “how to get the most nutritional bang for your buck with local foods.” Also, Mark Kimble, a farmer from Essex County, will discuss buying meat directly from your local farmer and Cathy Hohmeyer, owner and chef for Hohmeyer ’s Lake Clear Lodge, will discuss seasonal menu planning. “What we wanted to do is to get people to understand what’s going on with the local food movement and the research that’s going on,” said Logozar.

Logozar will also discuss the “language of local foods,” explaining what terms like local, organic, natural and grass-fed mean. “It’s getting that muddiness cleared out of the water for terms that can be confusing,” said Logozar. The May 6 conference will be held from 5:30-8:30 p.m. The agenda, added Logozar, will also include networking time with locally-grown and processed finger foods for tasting. Pre-registration for the conference is required by Saturday, May 1. The $10 registration fee covers admission, refreshments and materials. For more information or to register, call 483-7403 or e-mail bel7@cornell.edu.
Franco’s CountryKitchen open forbusiness By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Nicole and Jerry Franco welcome customers to their new restaurant, Franco’s Country Kitchen. The Francos opened their new business in March, occupying the location of the former Kaya’s Country Kitchen. Their menu offers an array of items, from burgers and hot dogs to wraps, sandwiches, chicken wings and more. Franco’s also serves breakfast all day, with traditional items like pancakes, French toast and country fried steak made to order. Breakfast burritos, breakfast sandwiches
and sausage gravy over biscuits are also among the typically morning offerings that can be ordered all day. Franco’s also has a full menu of sandwiches — served both cold and hot — including “The Hitman.” There’s little that Jerry will divulge about The Hitman other than to say it’s a “spicy Italian sandwich.” “We could tell you more, but then The Hitman would have to kill you,” Jerry laughed. Franco’s also offers a kid’s menu and half-portions for those looking for a quick bite to eat. Eventually, Franco’s plans to offer pizza.
April 22-28, 2010
“That’s something we think people will like because they’ll be able to order pizza by the slice,” said Nicole. Franco’s Country Kitchen — located at 334 Cornelia St., Unit 9 — is open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. There’s plenty of parking available in front and in back of the restaurant. Want Franco’s cooking in the comfort of your own home? Take-outs and delivery are also available — just call 563-8230.

Race for Stace From page 4 her gymnastics career. The scholarship is just one way for Stacey to live on, said her brother. “And, what’s unique with this scholarship is that 100 percent of the money raised for it goes to help students,” said Frechette, who added that is how his sister would’ve wanted the scholarship to help other promising athletes. Last year ’s Race for Stace raised $8,500 for the scholarship fund, which is another number Frechette hopes to exceed this year, he said. As another way of drawing people to the event, this year ’s Race for Stace will include a one-mile fun run for kids ages 12 and younger. The fun run will start at 8:30 a.m., followed by the 5k walk/run at 9 a.m. Pre-registration will be held in the Emmaus Room of St. Peter ’s Church on Cornelia Street Friday, April 23, from 4-6 p.m. Forms will also be available in Plattsburgh at Warren Tire Service Center, 13 Broad St., and Bark’s Convenience Store — the Shell gas station off Exit 36 of Interstate 87 — and Chazy Central Rural School, 609 Miner Farm Road in Chazy. The cost of pre-registration for the walk/run is $15; registration the day of the race will be $20. Registration for the onemile fun run is $5. The first 150 walk/run and 50 fun run registrants will receive free Tshirts commemorating this year ’s Race for Stace the day of the event. In addition, all participants will receive a free surprise gift. Following the walk/run, this year ’s scholarship honoree will be announced. Participants will also be treated to refreshments courtesy of the event’s many sponsors and entertainment will be provided. The afterevent celebration will also include a silent auction, raffling of gift baskets, and giveaways. “We want people to know this is a family-friendly event,” said Frechette. “It’s only as competitive as you want it to be. We just want people to have fun.” For more information, contact event organizer Jen Boyer at 562-0528 or via e-mail at raceforstace@yahoo.com.
