Clukey named BPW Young Careerist winner By Michael O’Keefe Special to Denton Publications
PLATTSBURGH — Keshia Clukey has been named winner of the 2010 Champlain Valley Business and Professional Women’s annual Young Careerist Competition. Clukey, a freelance journalist and a parttime substitute teacher, was recognized by the nonprofit organization during a dinner at the Westside Ballroom April 20. She won the competition after a written essay, personal interview and speech proved she was the one who should move on to the state level of the competition. “I’m really surprised,” Clukey said on winning the contest. “I entered as a whim.” Clukey, a recent master ’s degree graduate, competed against six other young entrepreneurs from different professional backgrounds, after her editor convinced Denton Publications, Inc. CADYVILLE — The Town of Plattsburgh Recreation Department will host a grand opening for the Cadyville Disc Golf Course Saturday, May 15, from 12-2 p.m. The recreation department recently created a 9-hole frisbee golf course at Cadyville Recreation Park, 114 Goddeau Road, with plans to create an additional nine holes this fall. For more information, contact the recreation department at 562-6860 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

However, she looked to her past experience as a public speaker and writer to help deliver her speech, which will now be read at an upcoming state level BPW competition. “It’s the same speech [at the state level],” she said. “But, I’m definitely going to tweak it.” “Oh and practice, practice, practice,” she added. Kerry Haley, executive director of the Foundation of CVPH Medical Center, was selected as runner-up for the local competition. If Clukey is unable to attend the state competition, Haley will be able to take her place.

her to talk to someone involved with the competition and submit an essay. “I wrote the essay and then they emailed me telling me I was a finalist,” she said. The essay was to address a senator who stands in opposition to one of Champlain Valley BPA’s platforms. The winning topic chose to discuss women’s rights issues, such as heart disease and ovarian cancer, that are frequently overlooked because of more controversial ones, such as abortion. After the essay, the six finalists were invited to a dinner, at which they were interviewed by a judge. They were also given a list of six questions, one of which they would have to deliver a speech on. Clukey chose work/life issues within the genders. “Men and women have to struggle with balancing their work and life,” she explained. Clukey also discussed how employers

pril brought some early wonderful weather but as the month progressed cold temperatures returned much to the dismay of all of us. My schedule was quite busy as usual. I attended the Heart Walk Breakfast event which was very well attended and focused on healthy living and improved ways for a healthier way of life. We continue to meet on Mayor ’s Cup & Regatta details. I participated in a Knock and Talk with members of the College/City Coalition in which we knocked on the doors of college students in the center city area and discussed common issues facing all of us. It was a very positive experience. I attended the Annual College Recognition Day event that recognizes the outstanding volunteer efforts in our community by PSUC students. I am very proud of the efforts by college students in assisting local residents and organizations. I had the enjoyment of being one of three judges for a food tasting at Plattsburgh State at an event like the Iron Chef TV pro-

gram which a three-person student team utilized a list of ingredients and had an hour-and-a-half to prepare two dishes for taste and judging. The two teams in the finals prepared excellent dishes and the scoring was so close because of the great job they both did. I thoroughly enjoyed the evening. The City of Plattsburgh HalfMarathon was held and the success of this first time event was beyond expectations! Over 400 runners participated with almost half running their first race and many from outside the area. Over $25,000 was raised for Team Fox for Parkinson’s Research which is a testament to all involved. The success of this event would not have occurred without the many volunteers, the generous sponsors, public interest, and city department employee support. Special kudos go to Stephanie Desautels, Jen Boyer, and Steve Peters. Next year will be bigger and better! As we move into May, the good weather will finally arrive and with it come new city work responsibilities. We will continue to do our best in providing the services our residents expect. Thanks!

he town of Plattsburgh is in the final stages of producing a new Comprehensive Master Plan. We were able to secure some grant funding but we also had to budget local funds to create a quality product that will meet our short- and long-term goals. During the past two years, the Comprehensive Land Use Planning Committee worked long and hard to achieve the challenge given to them. The CLUPC also reached out to the community, a number of times, to seek their involvement and input. The plan has been the collaborative effort of a cross section of the town with much input and feedback. A well-designed master plan defines the vision for the future of a municipality and offers a process to achieve the stated objectives. The planning process enabled us to gather statistical data, local feedback and identify needs and concerns. With the guidance and input of our consultant, the written document will become a tool that will drive future decision making and support our effort to win grants. A comprehensive master plan is
a requirement when applying for grants and funding for needed projects. Most important though, it will help us create a community that is valued by those who live here and modeled by others. I’m very proud of the work that has been accomplished by the CLUPC as well as the leadership shown by Phil Von Bargen in the Planning Department, committee chair Dr. Colin Read and consultant Stewart Messinger. Though this phase is nearing completion, our work is just beginning. We must also develop a comprehensive master plan for our Parks and Recreation Department and review and update our town codes and ordinances. The sustainability of the North Country as well as the town of Plattsburgh cannot be left to chance or short-term decision making. A good planning process process helps us learn about who we are, what we need to do to meet the needs of our community and how we will transition into a sustainable future. We know where we are going and how to get there! Thank you to those who have worked on the plan and contributed their thoughts and ideas during the planning phase. Planned Parenthood awarded $50,000 grant PLATTSBURGH — Planned Parenthood of the North Country New York Inc. was recently awarded the 2010 Robyn Menin Grant for Promoting Ingenuity in Risk and Quality Management from the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. The $50,000 grant is given annually to an affiliate for “innovative work in risk and quality management.” Martha E. Stahl, vice president of external affairs for PPNCNY, said the grant will be used to create “an interactive health literacy software tool that will assess the accessibility of the organization’s written materials to patients

“We self-identified that as an area where we needed to do some work,” said Stahl. Amy Valentine, coordinator of quality assurance and risk management for PPNCNY, said the organization will work locally with a software designer to create the program, which will be utilized in Microsoft Word much like a spell check or grammar check program. The software will search for and replace difficult terms — both health-related and otherwise — as well as calculate readability and create detailed reports. With other Planned Parenthood affiliates, issues such as bilingual signage or reading materials are more prevalent issues. However, in the North Country, patient reading comprehension was found to be among chief concerns.

Reminder: ‘Teaching Garden’ to begin Monday PLATTSBURGH — Cornell Cooperative Extension Clinton County will be providing hands-on gardening education to community members interested in learning how to grow their own food through a teaching garden. The Plattsburgh teaching garden will be offered at the Plattsburgh Community Garden located in Melissa L. Penfield Park on Boynton Avenue from Monday, May 10, through Thursday, Sept. 23 Classes will meet Monday and Thursday evenings from 6:30-7:30 p.m. The cost for the four-month class is $100, which covers all classes, the community

garden plot fee, water use, all plants and seeds, use of tools, soil amendments, and all of the produce grown during the class. A payment plan and need based scholarships are available upon request. Community members interested in attending the class portion of the teaching garden are encouraged to do so. A modest donation of $5 per class is requested to help ensure long-term sustainability of the teaching garden. Eating at Arnie’s Downtown business a landmark for nearly 60 years By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Arnie’s Restaurant has become synonymous with downtown Plattsburgh. However, it didn’t happen overnight. The business opened its doors on May 1, 1951, then located on Charlotte Street — known today as S. Peru Street. Arnold “Arnie” Pavone, along with his wife, Betty, and mother, Natalina, ran the modest business for more than five years in that location, he said, before moving to its current location on Margaret Street. “We moved here in August 1956,” said Pavone, as he sat at a table in his business’ upstairs dining room. “It was a very good decision.” The move put the Pavone family in the heart of downtown, which, in the 1950s,
was a bustling community. Serving their signature authentic Italian cuisine, the business thrived for many years and continues to do so to this day, despite losing many neighboring businesses in the mid-1970s. “In 1974, the mall was built and a lot of downtown merchants moved out there,” recalled Pavone. Though Pavone admits he was concerned what it meant for his familyowned business, he had faith his late mother ’s recipes, in which she lives on through today, would see him through an uncertain time. And, he was right. Today, Pavone and his wife, now 83 and 82, respectively, still run Arnie’s with the help of three of their sons and a grandson, keeping the “family” in “family business.” As for his customers, Pavone said he considers them part of

his extended family. “Families have grown up with us,” said Pavone. “Some of them have come in when they’re in high school, later when they’re married and come back with their children. Now, we’re even seeing their grandchildren and great-
grandchildren.” Why does Pavone keep working well after many men his age would have retired? It’s the connection he makes with people everyday. “It becomes part of your daily routine,” he said. “It’s a good feeling.”

Palmer Street Coffeehouse winding down season By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The sound of acoustic guitars being played is familiar to the people of Palmer Street. Since 1988, the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship has opened its doors to musicians on Friday evenings from October through June, through the Palmer Street Coffeehouse. Papineau that features many local performers, “playing a variety of music.” It’s so special, she said, that some performers even come from far away. “We primarily provide a venue for regional artists to play and then we bring in other artists from afar just to keep the line-up fresh,” Lawson explained. “We have many fabulous performers come from all over this region and New England.” “Anytime someone comes over to play, they find the acoustics are just absolutely unbelievable and they want to come back,” she added. “It’s a great venue.”

The coffeehouse format is attractive to many acoustic performers, said Lawson, because it brings them closer to their audience. “When we do the coffeehouse, the inside [of the church] totally gets transformed,” said Lawson, noting the arrangement of tables and chairs makes for a more intimate atmosphere. “And, we have apple pie and some very good coffee.” The performances — which are made possible, in part, with funding from the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Program, administered by the North Country Cultural Center for the Arts — are also ones that bring in people from families with young children to seniors. “It reaches the whole age spectrum,” said Lawson. “We especially love it when we have parents bringing their kids.” The Palmer Street Coffeehouse season is winding down with only two performances left before the start of summer. Hometown favorites “Beartracks” — a country and bluegrass musical trio consisting of Junior Barber, Tom Venne, and Julie Venne Hogan — are scheduled to perform this Friday, May 7. Singer/songwriter duo Eddy and Kim Lawrence will close the season in June. “Beartracks are wildly popular,” said Lawson, “and Eddy and Kim have a loyal following, too. They’re really fun and a little quirky.” This Friday’s performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. Doors will open at 7 p.m. Admission is $10 and refreshments will be available.
