Welcome to the new look of the ‘burgh! C

hances are, you’ve noticed a change or two with the ‘burgh. And, they’re changes we’re hoping better serve you, our readers. Beginning with this week’s edition, the ‘burgh is being printed in our own production facility in Elizabethtown. When the ‘burgh was started earlier this year, we at Denton Publications chose to partner with Upper Valley Press in North Haverhill, N.H., to print our new weekly publication on a glossy-finish paper stock. “Early on, we agreed to have the paper printed outside our facility as we agreed it could prove more advantageous to do so,” said Daniel E. Alexander, president and publisher of Denton Publications. “Upon recent reflection, both parties agreed it made far more sense for the paper ’s production to be moved to the Denton facility here in the North Country.” One of the main reasons for making the move from printing out-of-state has been how it has greatly reduced the window of time it takes to produce the ‘burgh. Previously, the ‘burgh was sent out for printing on Fridays, but not directly-mailed into people’s homes until the following Thursday. “The paper was forced into a situation where copy had to be ready more than a week before the paper was delivered,” said

Alexander. “Primarily, the deadline structure for the paper was not conducive for the local business community.” With greater control of the production, Denton Publications has now been able to adjust deadlines for the ‘burgh to allow more time for submissions from our readers and accommodate our advertisers. “We are excited about the early response we’ve received about [the] new schedule and continue to be enthused by the strong community input regarding the paper,” said Alexander. Additionally, Denton Publications now prints the ‘burgh on traditional newsprint, wrapped on a bright-white VersoPaper stock. The idea is to keep the attractive covers that jump out at you, our readers, which many of you have said you’ve come to enjoy. The added benefit is printing on traditional newsprint and VersoPaper is better for the environment because it is easier to recycle. “Conservation-minded folks brought that

to our attention,” said Alexander. “VersoPaper is a highly-rated organization that has received high honors for use of materials and energy, most recently being named Green Business Innovator of the Year.” The shifting of gears for the ‘burgh is something that also excites senior editor Jeremiah S. Papineau. “By making these changes, I feel we’re moving in a direction that will secure the longevity of the ‘burgh and hopefully make it a publication our readers can pick up for years to come,” said Papineau. “I’m proud of the accomplishments we’ve made this far, especially in connecting with the community through our articles. It’s a great feeling.” Editor Sarah L. Cronk, known within Denton Publications for her continued efforts in helping the company become “more green,” agreed. “The glossy stock the ‘burgh was formerly printed on, while great in terms of how pictures and ads printed, wasn’t that great for

Denton Publications, Inc.

the environment,” said Cronk. “It’s more difficult to recycle and hopefully the change to our current paper stock will make a difference.” “Also, I think bringing the printing inhouse will truly solidify the fact that we focus on being local,” added Cronk. The goal of Denton Publications in regards to the ‘burgh is now to expand the paper ’s variety of news coverage in Plattsburgh, add to staff and increase the number of stories in each edition. “We have a number of new articles and features planned that we hope will resonate with the readers of the ‘burgh,” said Alexander. “We hope to dig deep into the community and cover the type of news no one else does and that can’t be found anywhere else.” That, combined with the fact the ‘burgh reaches more than 15,000 homes in the town and city of Plattsburgh makes for an outstanding news product for readers and advertisers. “We reach more than four times more homes than any other print publication in Plattsburgh,” said Alexander. “Our circulation of the paper is second to none and the ‘burgh continues to have great potential to serve the community and we plan to see it realize that potential.”

X-Treme Clean helping to sweep away stress By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com CUMBERLAND HEAD — When battling cancer, one of the last things a person wants to do is think about cleaning. That’s where X-Treme Clean comes in. The professional cleaning service, which formed in 2005, is part of a unique nationwide initiative to offer free cleaning services to women with cancer. The initiative, known as “Cleaning for a Reason,” is something owners Cathy Bashaw and Carol Robert were introduced to through their membership in the Association of Residential Cleaning Services International. “We thought it would be something good to be a part of,” Bashaw said of Cleaning for a Reason. “We’re at a time in life where we have a good business and would like to give back to the community through a variety of things like that.” Cleaning for a Reason allows for up to four free house cleanings per patient, to be used however they choose,” said Bashaw. “They could get a monthly clean-

ing for four months, or a weekly cleaning for four weeks, for example,” she said. Robert herself knows how scary cancer can be. She was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2005. And, though her condition was corrected with surgery, Robert said she could “only imagine” the amount of stress people must have going through chemotherapy and radiation treatments. “I was very lucky with my cancer situation. I didn’t have to go through chemo,” said Robert. “I go to the cancer center on a regular basis for check-ups and I see people in all stages of their treatments, some are in wheelchairs with oxygen. I can’t even imagine what they’re going through.” “When you’re undergoing cancer treatment, you are very stressed out,” said Bashaw. “And, for the most part, the responsibility of house cleaning falls on the woman. So, even if she had to spend her time trying to find a service, it still causes her more stress.” “That’s why I feel that this service we offer is a help to any patient to

help sweep away their stress,” she added. The process of arranging a free house cleaning through Cleaning for a Reason is simple, said Bashaw. It involves filling out an application with some basic questions and furnishing a physician’s note verifying a diagnosis of cancer. Those interested may simply visit the Cleaning for a Reason Web site at www.cleaningforareason.org or call 1-877-337-3348. However, due to the high demand nationwide to receive services through Cleaning for a Reason, those applying directly though the organization may experience trouble getting through to main telephone number. In that case, Bashaw said XTreme Clean is ready to help. “Cleaning for a Reason has been in more of a demand since it was on Oprah, so if someone is calling the national number and that doesn’t work, call us,” she said. “We can take their information and get through to Cleaning for a Reason for them.” X-Treme Clean may be reached at 566-9584, by e-mail at bayja123@aol.com or their Web site, www.x-treme-clean.com.

ORRISONVILLE — The American Cancer Society’s 2010 Relay for Life of Plattsburgh, NY, held June 18-19 at the Clinton County Fairgrounds, brought in an estimated 4,000 people. The goal for this year ’s Relay was to bring in $220,000, which ACS community executive Joan Sterling said was reached. However, donations are still being collected through August by visiting www.relayforlife.org/plattsburghny. During this year ’s event, opening words were given, and sung, by The Boobie Sisters, a group of breast cancer survivors who fight cancer through laughter and awareness. County Legislator Sara E. Rowden, D-Area 4, and a member of The Boobie Sisters, said it was nine years ago when she was diagnosed with breast cancer — just three weeks into her new position as a legislator. Quickly the news became public knowledge through the newspaper and television. “I was little taken back,” she said. “But, I’ve got to tell you, that was probably the best thing that ever happened. Because the support I got from this community was unbelievable and it came from places that I had no idea it would come from.” Rowden’s words of wisdom to the 325 survivors who walked the first lap of the Relay was, “Let people know what’s going on. Talk to them, because you don’t know where that support’s going to come from.”

D N 0 A 1 20 RANDST G SHOWS!!! The historic Strand Theatre continues to be the focus of a restoration project by the North Country Cultural Center for the Arts board of trustees. Board president Leigh C. Mundy is encouraging people to make donations toward the project through several methods, including the Strand's Sponsor a Seat program. Photo by Sarah L. Cronk

Downtown’s Strand Theatre renovations are continuing By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Leigh C. Mundy has found the perfect recipe for restoring a building consists of passion, energy and, of course, money. Mundy stands at the helm of the North Country Cultural Center for the Arts’ board of trustees, which has been working since 2006 to restore the former Strand Theatre on Brinkerhoff Street. The project has been a challenging one, said Mundy, but one she feels is well worth the effort. “It’s beautiful,” Mundy said of the Strand. “We’re talking marble staircases, we’re talking aluminum leafing. Just a beautiful, beautiful theatre.” The NCCCA board purchased the building in 2004, saving it from foreclosure, said Mundy. The Strand was still being used as a movie house at the time, and was allowed to continue doing so until it was closed in 2006 for asbestos abatement. That’s when the restoration truly began, she said, under the guidance of her predecessor, Sylvia Stack. The process involved refurbishing many of the fixtures within the building in order to comply with regulations of the National Register of Historical Places, of which the Strand is registered. “It’s as close as you can get,” Mundy said of the changes so far. The most modern changes to the 10,000 square-foot building have been to make it handicap-accessible to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The restoration, which has been previously described as being a $3.6 million project, has

the ‘burgh

been mainly slowed by delayed government funding, said Mundy. “Grants from the state have been tremendously delayed. We just last year got the money available to us from a 2006 grant,” she said. Currently, the NCCCA board is awaiting a 2008 grant from New York State. What’s kept the momentum going, however, has been “generous donations from the community.” “The large chunks of money are always great, but I have a lady that sends me a $25 check a quarter,” said Mundy. “It’s what she can do but she knows it’s important ... It’s really special.” Through continued fundraising efforts such as the Strand’s Sponsor a Seat program — which gives those donating $150 to $500 an engraved nameplate for a theatre seat — the project will succeed, Mundy said. “I have somebody who bought two in the back because they kissed there,” she said. “I have a family that’s bought a whole row.” It’s that connection to local history that makes the Strand more than a building, Mundy said. “I think anytime you can restore something to its grandeur of the way they used to build things is important. It’s important for our heritage it’s important for the community,” she said. And, now is a critical time to help make donations go farther, Mundy emphasized. Donations made before Wednesday, June 30, will be counted toward the NCCCA’s required matching portion toward an Empire State Tax Credit. For more information on how to donate, contact Mundy at 563-1604, or visit the NCCCA Web site at www.plattsburgharts.org. “I would like to see [the Strand] be everything the community needs,” said Mundy. “There are so many things it could be.”

PLATTSBURGH — Members of the Plattsburgh Green Committee are looking to the community to help shape up the city. According to Sonal Patel, a volunteer who assists the committee, city clean-ups began last August, in an effort to make a difference. “[We wanted] a noticeable change within the community that anyone could do,” Patel said, who first began the clean-ups. “Any age group, any social class, whatever. Anyone who wanted to help out, could help out.” Members of the committee and some volunteers gathered once a month, spending two hours cleaning up a predetermined area. “We did the bike path along the lake, Broad Street, and Durkee Street parking lot,” Patel recalled. Typically, the group could rack up six bags of garbage within the twohour clean-up. “Most of it was cigarette butts actually,” Patel said.

Now, the committee is planning to continue their monthly clean-ups. The next one, scheduled for this Saturday, June 26, at 10 a.m., will begin at the Stewart’s Shop on South Catherine Street. “As part of our community, it is our responsibility to keep it clean,” Patel said. For those interested in taking part in the clean-up, visit www.plattsburghgreen.org. Liability waivers must be signed and will be available the day of the clean-up. Gloves, picks and garbage bags will be provided. “Just so that we wouldn’t be liable and that they understand that if they found something, that they knew to take their own precautions,” Patel explained. She added the clean-ups wouldn’t be possible without the help of the city Department of Public Works and superintendent Mike Brodi. “Mike was amazing at getting all the materials I needed,” Patel said. “The rest of the department was great in terms of picking up the six loads of garbage that we had collected.”

The fresh soulful sound of The Natalie Ward Band By Sarah L. Cronk PLATTSBURGH — For the last five years, the Natalie Ward Band has been spreading their soulful, bluesy sound throughout the region. The band — which consists of Natalie Ward as lead vocals, Ron Riddle on guitar, Bernie Clifton on bass and Bob Newton on drums — is made up of musicians who joined from separate bands in spring 2005. “I had started singing with a funk band called Hip Connection,” explained Ward. “Ron Riddle had heard us and when that band ended he asked me if I was interested in getting together to explore some new musical possibilities.” After an “impromptu gig” at Irises Café and Wine Bar was “well received,” the group worked to refine their sound and have been playing steadily ever since. “Our sound is predominantly soul, blues and classic R & B,” said Ward. “We also include songs from other genres that have their roots there, such as soulful Janis Joplin tunes and songs by female rockers that have a bluesy edge.” Riddle, who said the group enjoys playing for the “dance crowd,” explained the band works to make songs their own style, especially focusing on bringing out each of their own

What the band considers to be one of their big attractions is the strong lead vocals of Ward. “There is no other band in Plattsburgh that has a predominantly lead female vocalist who does music by artists like Susan Tedeschi, Melissa Etheridge and Bonnie Raitt,” said Newton. “We have a great variety of music and also showcase Bernie and Ron’s vocals on some songs and have three-part harmonies.” “What we like is the emotional response we get from the crowd,” said Clifton. “It’s like a relationship. There’s an energy that flows back and forth between us and the audience.” Although the band has not released an album, as they have been busy performing live, they are currently working on putting together a compilation with their popular arrangements. While working on the recording, the band will also be busy throughout the summer playing numerous public and private events. They are also working to revamp their Web site, www.thenataliewardband.com. (Editor’s Note: The Natalie Ward Band’s next performance will be Friday, July 2, from 7-10 p.m. at Dana’s Rusty Anchor, 4016 State Route 9. Check out the band on Facebook for a list of upcoming events or e-mail nataliewardband@charter.net.)

musical ability. “The band has varied influences and musical experience that have created a synergy that has worked extremely well for us,” he explained. “We’ve managed to create a sound that builds on each of our talents and interests and is the kind of music that people want to hear and dance to.”

Support the community garden

Not so proud of Adirondack Pride

The Plattsburgh Community Garden Group has successfully completed Phase I of its vision. The gardens at Melissa Penfield Park are well established. Readers are invited to visit the site (near the gazebo and ball fields) and enjoy its lush beauty. The garden is now on selfsustaining financial footing, and more plots were added this year. The vision, however, doesn’t end there. At the heart of the concept is locally grown produce to reduce the use of fossil fuels for transporting food and for the improved health of our community. Ideally, everyone in Plattsburgh should have the opportunity to grow a garden within walking distance of their home. The Plattsburgh Community Garden Group would like to help create additional community gardens in the city. Since there are expenses involved in starting a new garden (e.g. staking out the plots, stripping sod, turning soil, establishing a water source, setting up a storage shed, etc), the group will hold a street drive to raise the needed funds. The drive will be held Saturday, July 24 at the intersections of Cornelia and Beekman streets, as well as other intersections throughout the city. Thank you, Plattsburghers, for once again showing your legendary generosity. We couldn’t build these community gardens without your support. Doug Butdorf, Anne Lenox Barlow, Erin McGill, Kimberly Cummins, Bill Teter, Bonnie Miller, Mary Alice Shemo, and Shelly Fracalossi Plattsburgh Community Garden Group Inc. Board

I was shocked and hurt to see your article, “Adirondack Pride celebration...”. I don’t have a computer, but since you asked us to share our comments, I’ll give you mine. I don’t think a rainbow should be used as a symbol of “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Pride Month,” and I’m disgusted to think that President Obama is the author of such a title nationally for the month of June. That’s one more reason I’m glad I didn’t vote for him. You see, sin is nothing to be proud of. No! Sin must be repented of, for as the Bible says, “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” My doctor in Washington said it’s the worst since it snowballs. How can a person get saved by repenting of their sin if you stick for them? Yes, as the Bible says, “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” I’m so thankful that Jesus saved me from my sin, taking it all away by the blood of Jesus Christ in a born-again experience in the mission in Canada. It’s not surprising that the people “celebrating” that sin are contributing to the AIDS Council. It’s been proven that some of the sinful activities of those people spread the AIDS. The Bible describes the judgment that would come on the homosexuals, and the head of the County Health Department where I lived in Washington agreed that it sounds just like the AIDS as he said, “It’s interesting, isn’t it.” No, no sin should ever be celebrated, especially not the one God calls “abomination.” You need to find out how God feels about something before you put your stamp of approval on it. Flying fun The Plattsburgh Radio Aeromodelers Club entertained crowds during their annual radio-controlled air show June12-13 at Memorial Field in Beekmantown. Club members flew their planes performing stunts that wowed young and old alike. Here, Luke Sanger of Morrisonville sits with his daughters Morgan, center, and Felicity as they take a break for some food prepared by club members.
