The resurrection of the Illegitimate Son of MST3K By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — When the soon-to-be destined cult classic television series Mystery Science Theater 3000 launched in 1988, it wasn’t long before the show developed a following in Plattsburgh. It was a following so large that it bore a child — the “Illegitimate Son of Mystery Science Theater 3000.” The television show itself, which originally aired on a UHF station and later on Comedy Central and the Sci Fi Channel, centered on a man and his robot companions who were trapped on a space station. The characters were forced to watch various “B movies,” leading them to make comedic remarks throughout the viewings, and making “MST3K” popular with its viewers. That kind of appeal is what Andy MacDougall, one of the ISMST3K’s original founders, said led his group to be formed in the first place. The group would get together with the same premise — to view and openly mock bad cinema. “It was like having a live version of the show ... taking a bad movie and pumping comments into it relative to current events or whatever,” said MacDougall. The original ISMST3K group met regularly at the John XXIII Newman Center on Broad Street and the Palmer Street Coffeehouse at the Uni-
tarian Universalist Fellowship church. However, it wasn’t until 1993 that the group really took off. That’s when the State University of New York at Plattsburgh got behind ISMST3K, helping promote it as an alternative to students hitting the local bar scene, said MacDougall. The group met weekly on the college campus, eventually having crowds of 30-40 or more. “It was a good cause,” MacDougall said of promoting an alcohol-free Saturday night event. “We were quite proud of that.” When MST3K fizzled out in 1999, it was about a year later the group followed the same path into waning popularity. Five years later, though, there was a resurgence of interest in the group, with five more get-togethers arranged over the spring and fall semesters of 2005. It was short-lived, however, and was an idea that sat on the shelf — until now. Through the collaboration of Plattsburgh Public Library staff members Kelly Sexton, Caleb Moshier and David Fuller with MacDougall, ISMST3K has been resurrected. The next generation of the group chose what MacDougall considered a fitting film to view — a
he injects “not so in-your-face” political satire, much like MST3K did in its heyday. Sexton, who was an earlier member of the group, returns with her take on just “making fun of a bad movie.” “It’s a way to be involved with the movie instead of being just passively sitting there,” said Sexton. “Everybody kind of gets into trying to outdo one another to see who’s going to say something funnier. It’s just silly.” “We each have our own perspectives on it, but ultimately it’s about having fun,” said Bringing back the Illegitimate Son of MST3K are, from left, Caleb Moshier, Kelly MacDougall. Couple’s 50th wedding anniversary receives the celebrity treatment sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Not many people can say they have been with the same person for 50 years. But, George and Joanne Rabideau can. The Rabideaus celebrated their golden anniversary Aug. 13 — with a little bit of style. Their nephew and godson, Shawn Rabideau, is an event planner and designer based in New York City who has worked for celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Barbara Walters and Star Jones. Recently, he was seen on Bravo as the event planner for the show “Bethenny Getting Married?,” featuring natural food chef Bethenny Frankel. However, his most recent endeavor was putting together the centerpieces for his aunt and uncle’s anniversary celebration at American Legion Post 20. “We called him and we asked if he would do the flowers,” Joanne recalled. “And, he said, ‘Oh, I’d love to aunt Joanne’ … that was it. I just told him how many tables there

was. We didn’t know anything. Shawn said he was happy to do the flowers for his aunt and uncle, because he sees them as an inspiration. “They've been married for 50 years and they really are indicative of what a marriage is,” he said. “They've seen the good times, they've seen the bad times, and they're an inspiration for all the couples out there that you really can make it through.” Although he left the rest of the decorating to his cousins, Shawn admitted they looked to him for some advice. “They were asking questions … so I gave them some pointers to help them,” he said. For the flowers, Shawn brought together what he considered “fun” flowers, in yellows and whites. “My aunt, she wanted something bright and cheerful,” he said. “I wanted something that was just bright and pretty and simple. That is why I chose the yellow and white. I didn't want it to be too ‘wedding’ because of the fact that it's not a wedding.” It was however, a renewal of their vows. After 50 years together, both Joanne and
George decided it was time to recreate the day they became husband and wife. “We had talked about it at previous anniversaries, but this is a milestone,” said George. “We had to do something.” Ever the romantic, George also surprised his bride with brand new wedding rings. “I didn’t know anything about it,” laughed Joanne. Shawn created Joanne’s bouquet, which she took with her down the aisle of St. Peter ’s Church, a place that holds special meaning for the couple. “We were married there. My mom and dad were married there. I was baptized there. Her mother and father were both buried from there. My father was buried from there,” George explained. “Even though we weren’t always using that church, we always felt a connection.” For their future together, George already has some plans in mind. “Getting this together, doing the planning … we’re keeping notes and for our 100th we’re going to make some changes,” he said.

“The expo is a great way for those planning weddings — or even corporations looking for event services — to have everyone all in one place to see what the area has to offer.”
PLATTSBURGH — It was such a success, pod studio is doing it again. The full-service planning, organization and interior design firm will host Wedding and Events Expo 2010 this Saturday, Aug. 21 — its second annual event showcasing wedding and event services. Joshua Kretser, owner and designer of pod studio, will once again invite people to his business at 65 Court St. to meet with wedding and event professionals from across the North Country. Kretser said weddings, in particular, are events that can be
fessionals focusing on everything from caterers to florists, bakeries to disc jockeys, invitation printers to tent rental companies, and more. “We have many new vendors this year so people can meet people from event services they didn’t meet last year,” said Kretser. The expo will again benefit Norte Maar for Collaborative Projects in the Arts, a nonprofit organization which aims to provide arts and culture opportunities in the North Country. The event will request $5 donations at the door, with the intent of exceeding donations raised at last year ’s event. “It helps a great cause,” said Kretser, who serves on the Norte Maar board of directors. “Last year, we had probably 100 to 120 people attend, which was great considering it was pouring rain.” “We figure we got the rain out of the way

Inaugural summer wine tour a success By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The Lake Champlain Grape Growers Association has nothing to whine about after the success of the first annual Summer Wine Tour, held Aug. 1415. Nancy Vesco, owner of Vesco Ridge Vineyard said at least 200 people participated in the tour each day. “I think it went wonderful,” she said. “It was just really overwhelming, but in a good way. It absolutely exceeded any of our expectations.” The tour featured wine tastings at Amazing Grace Vineyard and Winery in Chazy; ELFS Farm Winery &C Cider Mill in Plattsburgh; Stonehouse Vineyard in Mooers; and Vesco Ridge Farm in West Chazy. There were also tours held at HidIn-Pines Vineyard in Morrisonville and Purple Gate Vineyard in Plattsburgh, although they weren’t licensed to serve wine. During the two-day event, many of the
wineries ran out of the souvenir wine glasses as well as some varieties of wine. “This being our first one, we didn’t know what to expect,” Vesco explained. “We’re definitely going to get together and throw everyone’s ideas out there and have a plan so we’re prepared for the bigger crowd.” Vesco was happy however, to see so many people interested in the wine grown in the region. “I’m just glad that the wine lovers came out. There are a lot more people out there that are wine drinkers than what I thought,” she said. “It was nice to meet so many people that have the same interest. And it was fun too, because a lot of people came through just to do the wine tour. Then there were several people that … were interested in the grapes and growing and making of the wine. It was a mix of people.” Vesco plans to meet with the rest of the LCGGA members soon, and consider the possibility having another wine tour in the near future.

Beekmantown Central among prize winners for school lunch programs By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com BEEKMANTOWN — The Beekmantown Central School District is one of eight school districts across the state that has been recognized for creativity and excellence in their school lunch programs. New York State Office of General Services Commissioner John C. Egan has announced his office, in conjunction with representatives of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, selected BCSD as an honorable mention award winner for the 2010 Best Practices Awards. The
recognition, announced Aug. 9, highlights school district efforts in using USDA foods. BCSD superintendent Scott A. Amo said the district is “extremely proud” of food services director Roxann Barnes in submitting the school district for recognition, which resulted in successfully receiving $1,000 in federal funding to support the purchase of school lunch-related equipment. “Roxie has developed an innovative lunch program and serving line routine that has increased our students’ interest in school lunch. That’s a great thing to have happen in this day and age,” said Amo.

“[The recognition] just brings more attention to the hard work that she has put forth on behalf of our students, working and helping them develop better and healthier lifestyles, in terms of their eating habits.” First Lady Michelle Paige Paterson commended the Office of General Services and the award-winning schools for supporting healthy eating environments in New York State. Paterson, who established the school-based "Healthy Steps to Albany: First Lady’s Challenge," a competition developed to teach children about health and well-
ness, noted wellness and education go “hand in hand.” “Research has shown that healthy students are four times more likely to do better in school. Poor nutrition and hunger interfere with brain function and are associated with lower academic achievement,” stated Paterson. “Their dedication to providing healthy meals symbolizes their commitment to the health of our students.” "This program is a perfect example of New York State’s commitment to healthy living" Egan added in a prepared statement. Mountain Lake PBS holding video contest Station encouraging kids to focus on health and fitness By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The idea is simple — get kids moving. Mountain Lake PBS has launched a video submission contest called “Mountain Lake Moves!” in an effort to get kids and their families off the couch and eating healthier. The contest invites children in grades 612 to submit their original videos promoting “healthy eating and/or physical activity.” Jennifer Kowalczyk, director of communications for Mountain Lake PBS, said the contest is part of the station’s effort to do something on a local level to promote health and wellness. “We’ve been wanting to do a video contest for awhile, and just hadn’t come up with the right [topic],” said Kowalczyk. Jane Owens, the station’s director of education and out-
reach, had recently participated in conferences at the national level that dealt with the topic of health and wellness, said Kowalczyk, which provided the inspiration for the contest. “I think it’s a great fit with a new strategic plan we’re writing,” said Kowalczyk. “The contest engages the community in asking them to be a part of it, rather than us just providing the content for it.” Mountain Lake Moves! en-
courages submissions of videos 30-60 seconds in length. The videos must incorporate the tagline “Mountain Lake Moves” and must be the original work of the student, though guidance can be provided by adults. Videos will be subject to review for content and appropriateness prior to uploading onto the station Web site and all video will be judged on creativity, composition and message. The winning video will air on
Mountain Lake PBS, and the creator or creators will win an iPod Touch. The runner up video creator(s) will win a Flip video camera. “What we’re hoping is that once all the videos come in, we’ll have at least a couple of them that we’ll be able to air on Mountain Lake PBS as a public service announcement that promotes health and fitness for kids and families,” said Kowalczyk. “This contest provides students the opportunity to develop the 21st century digital literacy skills that they’ll need to be successful,” Owens said in a statement. “This local initiative is aligned with the national Let’s Move campaign to raise a healthier generation of kids.” Entries are due no later than 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, and may be mailed to Mountain Lake PBS, 1 Sesame St., Plattsburgh N.Y. 12901. Complete criteria for Mountain Lake Moves! submissions, including how to submit videos on-line, can be found at www.mountainlake.org/moves .html.

Saying au revoir to Vélo Québec By Sarah L. Cronk
sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Michael Deserres of Montreal was most impressed by the people of New York during his 12th Vélo Québec Voyages Grand Tour. The Grand Tour, a seven-day cycling vacation traveled through upstate New York for the first time since it began 17 years ago. “It’s a great organization,” Deserres said. “It draws in a lot of people.” Deserres, who bikes along the predestined route with his friend, Jean Paul Dupre, said both of them have no particular place to go every year, so they choose to ride along with nearly 1,800 people for nearly 500 miles. However, the outpouring from the people in the area made this trip different for Deserres. “The welcoming parties in towns, Beekmantown and other villages, it’s been remarkable and it’s been different,” he said during his stop in Rouses Point Aug. 12. “This is what makes New York state different. The people are alongside the highways and applauding. That’s real nice.”

Deserres was also surprised by receiving a pamphlet in Rouses Point of places to go and things to see. “That’s unique. That’s just so nice,” he said. “This is the New York state I love.” Having been traveling to Plattsburgh on and off since he was a child, Deserres noticed it was a different experience from the seat of a bike. “The Plattsburgh area I’ve known since I was a boy, so it’s like a homecoming to me really,” he explained. “It’s just good to come back on a bike because there’s more time to relax and to see and enjoy.” To bring the Grand Tour to the area, many people from many businesses and organizations had to step up to the place. Food was provided by places such as Smooth Moves, Sodexho, Ground Round and Adirondack Coffee Roasters, while organizations such as the Adirondack Boy Scouts and the Compassionate Friends of Northern New York helped things run along smoothly by unloading luggage and serving food. Kristy Kennedy, an organizer of the event and a group marketing specialist with the PlattsburghNorth Country Chamber of Com-
merce, was pleased with how things turned out. “It was a complete community effort,” she said. “Even if it was just something simple like putting a sign in their window or giving me a call, I can’t thank everyone enough … The outpour from the community was just overwhelming.” When Vélo Québec first announced the Grand Tour would travel through upstate New York, it was estimated participants would spend more than $300,000 in the region, with 83 percent of participants returning in the future. Kennedy now knows these statistics are true. “I think the participants loved the area. A lot of them came up to me and said they would be back with their family and so forth,” she said. “I can’t even complain about anything. It was an amazing experience and it went off better than I could have even imagined.” Although Kennedy doesn’t know how much money was spent in the area, she believes it is possible they exceeded the amount expected. “I just know by people telling me what downtown looked like with the bikes everywhere and cyclists coming up to me at the tourism

booth and asking where is the closest bike shop, is there a laundromat, or the beach or where can they go shopping,” she explained. “ They were just everywhere.” Corinna and Paul Maggy, owners of Mountain Riders, also noticed the people throughout Plattsburgh. The Maggys worked alongside Kennedy and the Adirondack Visitors Bureau in preparation for the tour, setting up a water station at AuSable Point Campground and volunteering at Clinton Community College, where many of the cyclists slept under the stars. “It was amazing to see cyclists
filling the town. They had a shuttle to the mall, farmers’ market, and the beach so it was great for local businesses,” said Corinna. “All the restaurants were packed.” Paul agreed, adding throughout their volunteering, they must have spoke to at least 1,200 of the cyclists personally. For the future, Kennedy said she is more than willing to have Vélo Québec return to the area. “We have talked to them and thrown it out there that Plattsburgh would be happy to host again and they seemed receptive to the idea,” she said.

Roy shows Airborne Speedway mods no mercy Branham snags Sportsman “4-20’s” win SOUTH PLATTSBURGH — Martin Roy continued his good season last week at Airborne Speedway. Roy dove underneath Pierre Berthiaume for the lead on lap 16 after pressuring him on the outside for several laps and then drove off to his fourth straight Ernie’s Discount Tools Modified win and his third in the last eight days Aug. 14. His winning margin was 10 car lengths over Patrick Dupree with Berthiaume third. Dupree came from 15th to claim the runner-up spot. “The yellows helped on the way up through,” Dupree said. “But, on the first restart, [Roy] kind of got away from me.” Maxime Viens, who placed fourth, was the third Quebec pilot in the top five. Vince Quenneville had a strong showing in fifth, four car-lengths ahead of Greg Atkins and Viens’ father Michael, who placed seventh. Leon Gonyo was eighth. All four cars turned in 20 laps of close-quarters racing with one another. Twenty-six modifieds started the 30-lap event, which had five cautions and was red flagged on lap 22 for a three-car pileup involving Jason Bruno, Aaron Bartemy and Mike Phinney. Don Scarborough and Pat McGrail filled out the top 10. Bucko Branham won the J&S Steel Sports-
man feature, which was run in four 20-lap segments. Branham won the second segment on the way to a winning total of eight points (2-1-3-2). He was running third in final 20-lap segment just behind rookie Bill Thwaits, who was poised to win the overall event when his car shut down with two laps to go. Thwaits won the opening and third segments and was seeking his first career win. His electrical demise relegated him to fourth place overall. Robin Wood (4-2-23=11) was the runner-up. Shawn Duquette’s pass of Tylor Terry on the final lap earned him third place. Jamy Begor won the final segment. “It’s been a good year,” Branham said. “I was questioning myself about racing so hard to win the second segment. I scraped the wall and tore up some sheet metal and bars. A race like this can be all about saving your right rear and I used my up some. I feel bad for Billy, he drove a good race.” Rick Doner of Ausable Forks continued his dominance in the NAPA Mini-Modified division with his seventh win of the season. Justin Doner, CJ LaVair, Jamie LaFountain and Kris Clark finished 2-3-4-5. Keith O’Neil wired the field in the nonpoints Versatile Trailer Sales Renegade fea-

Zero Tolerance isn’t a bad thing By Jeremiah S. Papineau
Photo by Leann Rabideau • Photos Unlimited
jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Zero Tolerance is serious about their music. “We have spent the sum of around $30,000 providing us with multiple set ups for 100 people to thousands,” said lead guitarist and vocalist Tom Parent. “We can handle any venue inside or out.” The Plattsburgh-based band, which has been playing for the past 10 years, has a diverse background. Lead singer Lonny Laccount loves country, while rhythm guitar player Joe Burl likes new popular rock and roll. Bass player Ted Bruer has also played in numerous country and rock bands, while drummer Kevin Bosley, who doubles as a DJ within the group, pushes his fellow band members to learn music requested when he DJs. Parent, himself, said he’s been most influenced by classic rock. “We play very popular recognizable tunes, most you can dance to and all you can sing along,” said Parent. “We have a varied set list we have been told that we play something for everybody.” The band’s first gig was at the Naked Turtle and they’ve played across the North Country and Vermont ever since. “Our biggest fan base is the Plattsburgh area due to playing frequent motorcycle rallies and the Clinton County Fair,” said Parent. Over the years, Zero Tolerance has established “a great relationship” with several bar owners, said Parent. Most notably, the band has been asked to play for the New Year ’s celebration at Rainbow Wedding and Banquet Hall for several years. “Having been around for 10 years now we have earned a positive reputation with our community which has been built by making ourselves available for many high profile benefits and fundraisers,” said Parent. (Editor’s Note: Zero Tolerance will perform this Sunday, Aug. 22, at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1418 in Champlain for a benefit for Laura Perras. The benefit is from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The band will also play the season closing of the Naked Turtle Saturday, Sept. 4, beginning at 9:30 p.m. Check out the band at www.zerotrocks.com and find them on Facebook, MySpace and YouTube.)
Ten Year Vamp to open for Aerosmith SYRACUSE — Ten Year Vamp, an Albany-based rock band which regularly plays in Plattsburgh, has been chosen to open for Aerosmith at the New York State Fair. The band will perform the opening day of the fair, Thursday, Aug. 26, at the Mohegan Sun Grandstand, beginning at 7:30 p.m. “We’ve had our fingers crossed for about two months now, hoping to get this show,” said Mark Rose, rhythm guitar player and co-founder of Ten Year Vamp. “We had to get approval from a bunch of different people, including Aerosmith themselves to do this. We’re extremely thankful to the state and everyone involved for giving us the

In addition, one of their songs was used on MTV’s “The Real World New Orleans,” and their songs have been licensed by the Adobe Corporation and Dockers Jeans. Tickets for the show start at $84 and are available through Ticketmaster. Ten Year Vamp will perform next in Plattsburgh Friday, Sept. 24, and Saturday, Sept. 25, at Olive Ridley’s on Court Street.
