Ti firm cruising toward success Hacker has new investors; growing market and payroll By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — Hacker Boat Co. has been making classic vessels for more than a century, but it’s experienced a re-birth recently in Ticonderoga. The company recently got new ownership, moved its operation from Silver Bay to Ti and has expanded its workforce to 50 people. It’s an exciting time for Dan Gilman, Hacker vice president of sales. “It’s an American brand over 100 years old; that really appealed to the new investment group,” Gilman said. “Ticonderoga, and Hacker, have great potential in the minds of our investors. They’re very civic minded and

TICONDEROGA — Ticonderoga High School volunteers are still “keeping up appearances” for Earth Day. Fifty-three students and six staff members ventured out to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, the third year of this school initiative, which was inaugurated by Bill Morse and Marsha LaPointe. “Everyone needs to take pride and ownership of our town and keep our streets clean.” said Morse.

Members from the student body at large worked during study halls, others during Lynne Lenhart’s Spanish classes. As in previous years, volunteers covered Alexandria Avenue, Lake George Avenue, Calkins Place and Amherst Avenue. Lenhart’s students were following up on a special emphasis on environmental issues, which connected to their recent Costa Rica trip. The town aided the effort again this year by supplying vests and signs for safety, as well as picking up the filled bags afterward. Forty bags of trash were collected.

FUELED BY LIGHT, TICONDEROGA — Fort Ticonderoga opens for the 2010 season May 20 with a new exhibit. “Pottery, Pork & Pigeons” is in the southeast corner of the Enlisted Men’s Barracks and is the culmination of over 16 years’ work by volunteer Frank Schlamp, adjunct assistant curator of archeology, and Chris Fox, curator of collection. Schlamp, who is a retired DEC officer, took on the task of cleaning, cataloguing, and restoring years’ worth of pottery shards and other small objects. The exhibit highlights the variety of ceramics and utensils used by the soldiers in their daily lives at Fort Ticonderoga. The exhibit also explores what was available to them for food illustrating this with bones from pigs, deer and passenger pigeons. Also new in 2010 are two different tours based on the investigation by T.A.P.S. and seen on Ghost Hunters TV show. A nighttime tour for small groups will be available most Friday and Saturday nights in July and August by reservation. It will take guests to areas of the fort not

Please plant vegetables for food pantry To the Times of Ti: This is May, the time for nicer weather (hopefully) and the time for planning your gardens. We at the Ticonderoga Food Pantry have been blessed by the donation of extra vegetables from Fort Ticonderoga and a couple of others the last few years, but you may not realize that in
these last few years the number of families asking for our help has tripled. Needless to say it is difficult at times to keep up with providing fresh vegetables to those who come in. Therefore we are asking you gardeners out there to please think of planting just one extra row and donating the produce to the food pantry.
It would be such a great help to us in providing for those in need. Will you please consider this? If you have any questions you can call me at 585-6034 or speak to any of us at the food pantry. Thank you for your help. Emma Williams Ticonderoga
‘Meow’ a success To the Times of Ti:
Say ‘no’ to tobacco; make a difference To the Times of Ti: Did you know tobacco companies own a significant amount of food you eat and love? Tobacco companies go by the names of Post, Nabisco, Oscar Myer, Kraft and many, many more. Say you go out to the grocery store and buy Oreos for your children who you love, when you made the purchase of the Oreos, in which tobacco companies own, you put money towards helping teens and children, including yours, to do tobacco. It’s not just snacks that you enjoy that tobacco companies own, but it’s every day things that you put in your daily diet. For instance, you put Oscar Myer meat in your family’s sandwiches; this is also a form of supporting tobacco companies. Tobacco companies are really smart and really selfish. They don’t use tobacco because they know it can lead to death, cancer and many other sicknesses. But they have

Coupon Hold ‘Em: What’s with limits? Q:
“Almost all of my coupons say Limit one coupon per purchase. I tried to get my store to use one coupon for each item purchased but they insist I can only use one coupon for each shopping trip. How can I convince them otherwise?” A: There are two variations of the limit wording that you’ll see on coupons: Limit one per purchase and Limit one per transaction. A lot of confusion arises from this wording. Here’s the simplest way to understand it. Each item we buy is a purchase. Each group of items that we take to the lane with us and buy together is one transaction. Limit one coupon per purchase means a limit of one coupon per item purchased. In fact, many coupons use the newer, explicit “per item purchased” phrase to make the meaning clearer both for the shopper and the retailer. Either way it’s written, a coupon limit per purchase means that you may use one manufacturer coupon on each item that you are buying. What your store is telling you is incorrect - and this sort of confrontation is certainly a couponer ’s worst nightmare! You are free to contact any product manufacturer and ask them about this - I have. When I spoke with one manufacturer, the representative actually laughed and said “Nobody would use our coupons if they could only use one per shopping trip!” And this is true. Manufacturers want us to use their coupons. They want us to try their new products and continue to buy their existing products and coupons are a great incentive to ensure that we do. Manufacturers do intend that shoppers may use one manufacturer coupon per

item purchased. If I have 25 items on the belt, I can use one manufacturer coupon for each item up there. I am purchasing all of them. I cannot imagine having to make a separate trip through the lane for every item I buy. I sometimes use 20 or more coupons in a single trip! Store registers are also set up to accept one manufacturer coupon for each item purchased - again, in conjunction with the way manufacturers intend for their coupons to be used. Only coupons that state “One per transaction” are, in fact, intended to be used on one item, one time, per shopping trip. If I happened to have multiples of this type of coupon I would have to use them over several transactions. However, that wording on a manufacturer coupon is very rare. In more than a year I’ve only seen it once on a manufacturer coupon, a high-value, $5 printable coupon. Additionally, that One per transaction phrase is more often found on a store coupon, such as a “$5 off your next order of $50 or more.” It’s the store’s intent to limit you to using one per shopping trip. They don’t want you accumulating several of these and then using them in the same transaction. So, how should you resolve this? I suggest visiting your store’s Web site or call-
ing your store’s corporate office to obtain a copy of the store’s current coupon policy. Unfortunately, sometimes staff may misinterpret the policy of the store or at times not be aware of it at all. Incredibly, I’ve heard from many cashiers that they get no training on their store’s coupon policy. This problem is more common than you might suspect. Once you obtain a copy of the current coupon policy, you’ll find all of the store’s rules for handling coupons spelled out in detail. You’ll know if it is indeed the store’s policy to only accept one coupon per shopping trip - which to me seems highly unlikely. If you discover that this store will only allow you to use one coupon per shopping transaction, you have a couple of options. You can either break up all of your purchases into separate transactions (a pain, of course, for both us and the store) or you can research the coupon policies of other grocery stores in your area. Chances are, a competitor will have a coupon policy more to your liking. My favorite area stores are the ones that are couponfriendly. As shoppers, we’re free to take our business anywhere we like. And if this store sees a drop-off in traffic, perhaps it will consider revising such a restrictive policy.

Hacker From page 1 want to see Ti prosper along with the company.” Erin Investment LLC purchased Hacker about two years ago. George Babcock is the chairman. Lynn Wagemann is the president. Last December Hacker renovated the former Delmar Box on Delano Road in Ticonderoga and moved its production facility from Silver Bay. It still maintains its corporate office in Silver Bay, where its been since the 1970s. It also has two storage facilities in Hague. Hacker also has a restoration facility on Montcalm Street in downtown Ticonderoga. Now that production has been moved, plans call for an upgrade of the Montcalm Street building. “Our goal is to be a very positive presence on the main street of Ticonderoga,” Gilman said. “We’re working with PRIDE right now to improve that building.” Hacker makes hand-crafted, mahogany boats. Every board is cut, all 30,000 screws are placed by hand. Even the metal hardware is

Wagemann is president and Babcock is chairman of Hacker Boat Company, which operates a production facility and a restoration shop in Ticonderoga. Photo by Nancy Frasier fabricated on site. Each boat gets up to 18 coats of varnish. “There is very little automation,” Gilman said. “These boats are made very similar to the way they were made 60-70 years ago. Every employee is a local craftsman. It takes years to learn these skills.” The new Delano Road facility has the capacity to build 15-20 boats at a time. It takes six months — about 2,000 man hours — to construct one and the company hopes to finish 30-40 boats a year.
Prices start at $100,000 and go to $250,000 for standard models. Custom boats cost more. “We’re Ticonderoga’s secret; most people don’t know about us,” Gilman said. “In the niche market of wooden boats, Hacker is No. 1. There’s been a real increase in business, particularly in the European market and we have a five-year plan to become a more global company.” As Hacker promotes itself, Gilman said, it will also promote Ticonderoga. “We will feature Ticon-
deroga in our ads worldwide,” Gilman said. “We will highlight Ticonderoga as our production facility. The name of Ticonderoga will get out to the entire world.” Hacker recently hired five new employees and plans to add more. Workers join the company as apprentices and learn the craft. Most of Hackers’ employees have been with the company for a decade or more. “These are all highlyskilled boat builders, the finest boat builders in the world,” Gilman said while

giving a tour of the plant. “It takes years of training to be a master boat builder. And they’re all local; they’re your neighbors.” Erin Babcock, assistant sales manager, said Hacker is committed to the area and its residents. “We’re really trying to advance our marketing efforts while maintaining our ties with Ticonderoga and Lake George,” she said. “We want to hire locally and foster a good relationship with the community.” The Adirondack Chapter of the Antique Classic Boat Society recently toured the Hacker plant. The tour was part of an effort to promote the company locally.
“We want the people of Ticonderoga to understand we’ve made a new start,” Gilman said. “We want to be a part of the community.” Hacker Boats races its history to 1908 when John Hacker took note of engines being designed for cars in Detroit and applied the technology to boats. He designed a round about that became known as the “Steinway” of boats, a reference to the famed piano. He built boats for the rich and famous and helped the U.S. Navy during World War II. When fiberglass boats were created in the 1950s, their limited maintenance and cheaper price made them more popular with the general public. Hacker survived, though, by catering to high-end classic boat lovers. “The brand is such that it endures,” Gilman said. “Now the great American boat is stepping forward into the 21st Century.” In fact, Hacker recently unveiled its newest model, the Sterling. It will make 25 and no more, making it a must-have for boat collectors. “We don’t make replicas,” Gilman said. “We make originals.”

Ti From page 1 lion building and renovation project approved by voters in 2007. The amount to be raised by taxes in the proposed budget is $9,740,039. That’s a 6.5 percent increase from the current tax levy of $9,145,204. The building project accounts for 3 percent of that increase. Voting on the budget will be Tuesday, May 18, noon to 8 p.m. at Ticonderoga High School and the Hague Community Building. Residents will elect three members to the board of education at that time. Running are incumbents Robert Palandrani Jr. and M. Mark Russell along with Bruce Clark and R. William Grinnell. Superintendent John McDonald said this budget has been difficult to prepare. “It gets harder every
year,” he said. “There’s simply less money available and we still have schools to operate.” The district is scheduled to receive a $435,000 cut in state aid in 2010-11 and debt service on the building project increases by $290,418. That means the district faced a $725,418 deficit without addressing any other increased costs. To help close that budget gap, the Ti school board has cut 7.5 positions — 5 percent of its teaching staff, consolidated bus routes, eliminated out-of-district conferences, cut department chairmanships, slashed the music enrichment program and cut the high school student mentoring program. The staff cuts — two elementary teachers, two middle school teachers, a high school teacher, an administrator, a bus driver and a teacher aide — will save the district $432,000. The other cuts total
Putnam From page 1 our opinion that next year will be even more difficult.” The proposed budget totals $2,152,427. That’s a 0.06 decease from the current spending plan of $2,153,732. The amount to be raised by taxes in the proposed budget is $1,630,017. That’s a 1.61 percent increase from the current tax levy of $1,604,125. Voting on the budget will be Tuesday, May 18, 1-8 p.m. in the school gym. The tax increase is attributed to a 10 percent cut in state aid for next academic year. “We were able to recover (from the aid reduction) due to the savings in health insur-
$149,249. Also helping cut costs is a decision by Ti teachers to switch health insurance programs, which will save the district $150,000 a year. Increases in the proposed budget include 2 percent net pay hikes for teachers and 2 percent increases for administrators. Non-instructional employees are now in contract negotiations. McDonald is hopeful Ticonderoga may get more state aid than projected once a state budget is adopted. He’s also hopeful austerity plans in place will result in the district closing the current budget year with a surplus. “We get restoration of state aid if the fund balance is better than expected and we’ll apply that money to the tax levy,” McDonald said. “We’re hoping for the best, while preparing for the worst.” Ticonderoga has 890 students.

The proposed budget included no major cuts or new programs, Boucher pointed out. Voters will also elect a member to the Putnam board of education May 18. Crown Point From page 1 the taxpayer burden was as small as possible,” Superintendent Shari Brannock said. The proposed 2010-11 budget totals $6,279,131, exactly the same as the present spending plan. The amount to the raised by taxes in the proposed budget is $1,463,755, a 3.81 percent increase from the current tax levy. Taxpayers will vote on the budget May 18 noon to 1:30 p.m. in the school foyer and 1:30-8 p.m. in the cafeteria. Voters will also select three school board members. Seeking seats are incumbents Mitch St. Pierre and Julie Budwick along with Kathy DebroBander. A key to holding the line in the budget was benefit concessions by teachers. In a new contract the teachers, who took no pay increase this past year, will get raises of 2.95, 3.95 and 4.95 percent during the next years while agreeing to pay more for health insurance. “Given the current economic climate those involved want-

ed to ensure a high-quality education system for students as the No. 1 priority,” Brannock said. “In doing so CPTA members agreed to move to a higher deductible health insurance plan during their next contract. “Our school community and taxpayers are thankful to our teachers for their willingness to contribute personally and collectively to the future of our school and its students,” she said. Cathy Russell, president of the CPTA, said teachers did what was best for the school and its students. “I’m proud of our teachers,” Russell said. “Last year we had to give back money. This year when the school administration asked for more help we were happy to do our part.” The health insurance concession will save the district more than $60,000 a year, Brannock said. Non-instructional employees will get 4 percent raises in the new budget. While the teacher concession helped, it wasn’t enough to close the budget deficit. As a result 5 1/2 positions have been cut, the GED program has been eliminated, high school special education services have been slashed, a bus purchase has been postponed and material and supplies purchases have been limited.
The staff cuts include two teaching assistants and a cleaner. Special education and social students positions have been reduced to half time, a science job has been cut by a third and Spanish and guidance positions have been reduced by a fifth. Principal Agatha Mace is retiring, Brannock noted, and it’s uncertain how that post will be filled. In any event, there will be a savings to the district. School office hours will also be cut to save money. Brannock noted the proposed budget does not cut any student programs. “Crown Point Central School is fortunate that under the proposed 2010-11 budget students will have similar academic programs, college electives, athletics and extra-curricular activities,” she said. “Our TEAM theme prevails — Together Everyone Achieves More. “Our goal was to have as little impact on students as possible; they won’t be feeling the affects of these changes,” Brannock said. “We’re still able to do more with less rather than less with less.” Crown Point has 280 students, down from a peak enrollment of 415 two decades ago.

Port Henry benefit assists animal shelter PORT HENRY — The “Cat’s Meow” benefit for the North Country SPCA, held recently at Boni’s Bistro in Port Henry, raised over $1,637 for the shelter in Westport. A combination fashion show, presented by the First United Methodist Church Thrift Shop in Ticonderoga, and area entertainers highlighted the evening. Lem Treadway was the announcer. Margie Reuther, NCSPCA president, and Deputy Bob Rice, animal control officer, spoke on the importance of the event. The organizing committee included Carol Genier, Gayle Wells, Betty Rettig, Helen Sprague, Boni Edwards, Jennie Lou Gunning and Diane Melin. “We came together as individuals who for the most part didn’t know one another, but knew we cared about the animals. We willingly joined talents to produce the event and then exceeded our expectations. We truly appreciate the response from all who were involved and those who supported the event by coming,” said Rettig.
Moriah From page 1 quality education for our students,” Superintendent Bill Larrow said. “Our class sizes will be slightly larger, but still manageable. We’ll be re-organizing our administration, though that’s still a work in progress.” Acknowledging difficult economic conditions, Larrow said it was a difficult budget to prepare. “Our board really took into consideration the economic hardships our community is facing and worked to have no increase in taxes,” he said. “Individual families have to do more with less. We have to take the same approach.” The proposed 2010-11 budget totals $13,948,101. That’s a .05 percent decrease from the current budget of $13,954,939. The amount to be raised by taxes in the proposed spending plan is $3,554,952. That’s exactly the same amount raised in the current budget. Voting on the proposed budget will be Tuesday, May 18, 1-8 p.m. in the school’s main lobby. District residents will also be asked to vote on the purchase of a bus to cost $96,282. That purchase is eligible for 90 percent state reimbursement. Voters will also elect three members to the board of education. Running are Kathryn M. Lacey, Charles French, Benjamin Winters
Presenting the check to the North Country SPCA from the “Cat’s Meow” benefit are, front from left, Pam Rock, shelter manager, Betty Rettig, Margie Reuther, NCSPCA board president; back Gayle Wells, Helen Sprague, Carol Genier and Boni Edwards. Committee members not pictured are Jennie Lou Gunning and Diane Melin. The entertainers included the Disco Dance team of Ashley Andersen, Brittani Boyle and Jordon
and Rose Rice. There will also be a spaghetti dinner from 4-7:30 sponsored by Moriah teachers, with all proceeds going to their scholarship fund. As in the past, there will also be an art exhibit that day. Expecting a state aid cut of $461,000 and increasing contractual obligations, the school board started the budget process facing a $917,000 deficit. The proposed budget eliminates three teaching positions, three teaching assistants and a buildings and grounds position along with the two principals. Those nine job cuts save the district about $400,000, Larrow said. A fund balance of $453,000 will be applied to the 201011 spending plan to close the deficit gap. The board also cut junior varsity and varsity football cheerleading, modified B boys and girls basketball, two class advisers and an activity adviser from the proposed budget. “There were tough decisions that had to be made,” Larrow said. “Overall, it’s a very tough budget. “Our staff has been great,” he added. “They realize the position the district is in. They do so much without being asked. They excel with what they have.” Larrow credited Erin Gilbo, district business manager, for her work on the budget. Unlike many schools, enrollment at Moriah is growing. Next academic year it

will have more than 800 students, forcing the school to add an extra section for kindergarten. “We’re looking at reducing everything we can and our enrollment continues to grow,” Larrow said. “We have more students and fewer financial resources.” The proposed budget does include some spending in-

Donating raffle and door prizes were The Lake Champlain Inn in Putnam Station; Aloha Morin of Mineville; Bill Welch of Schroon Lake, Boni’s Bistro; Candy Baker of Port Henry: Mineville Oil Co.; Frenchman’s Restaurant in Crown Point; George’s Restaurant in Port Henry; Adirondack Hair Associates of Port Henry; Lakeside Massage Therapy; Indulge at Roxie’s in Ticonderoga; Gayle Wells of Ticonderoga; Frances Malaney of Ticonderoga; Decker ’s Flats; Lisa Sprague of Crown Point; Dee Overholt’s of Schroon Lake; Valar-

ie Grenon of Mineville; Patty Urban of Port Henry, Helen Sprague of Crown Point; Cellotti Wine of Port Henry; and the First United Methodist Church Thrift Shop, Ticonderoga. The models were Kayleigh Peters, Raycie Lou Decker, Kaitlin Baker, Haley Harris, Colby Harris, Dominic Banish, Riley Manso, Meredith Green, Aimee Parent, Jarrett Banish, Tarin Thatcher, Paige Gunning, Jade Charboneau, Blake Charboneau, Jacquelin Rose Bishop, Marion Lamphere, Ellen Ellor, Pam Moser, Megan Moser, Julie Stewart, Kacie Peters, Barb Brassard, Alfie Mattison, Rebecca Rettig, Heidi Karkoski, Hans Rettig, Brandy Harris and all the members of the committee. Funds raised from the Cats’ Meow will be used towards the operating budget of the North Country SPCA, a non-profit, no-kill shelter that serves all of Essex County. For information about the shelter or adopting a pet, visit the shelter website at www.ncspca.org.
Larrow cautioned future budget may require even tougher decisions, especially since little help is expected from the state. “I’m afraid we’re heading to a point were all we can offer are the minimum requirements for graduation,” he said. “Eventually, every elective, every college-level course will be gone.
“We live in a small community that doesn’t provide a lot of opportunities for kids,” he continued. “You start taking away the arts and sports programs and you’re really impacting the lives of students. It’s a shame to make all these cuts.”

tals $7,447,215. That’s a 1.3 percent hike from the current spending plan of $7,349,590. The proposed amount to be raised by taxes is $5,892,715. That’s an increase of 5.5 percent from the present tax levy of $5,585,090. Voters will have their say on the proposed spending plan Tuesday, May 18, noon to 8 p.m. in the school lobby. Also on the ballot will be a proposition to purchase a bus at a cost of $95,000 or less and seat on the school board. Peter Veverka is running unopposed for the seat being vacated by Linda Lowe. Schroon Lake officials have held the line on spending in the proposed budget. Operating costs for 2010-11

are anticipated to increase by $53,058, 0.4 percent. To keep spending at that level Schroon Lake teachers agreed to a one-year contract calling for no pay increase in 2010-11. “I believe the teachers association, in combination with the board of education, resolved a one-year contract that held the students and their academia and programs as a priority,” said Mary Gereau, Schroon Lake Teachers Association president. “The concessions that the teachers association made allowed for the continuation of excellence at Schroon Lake Central School. We are fortunate to work in a district where the ideals of education are supported by the superintendent, board of education and the community at large.” The proposed budget also cuts $34,721 from custodian services, eliminates the

Beware of Medicare fraud Medicare fraud is when doctors or other providers deceive Medicare into paying when it should not or paying more than it should. This is against the law and should be reported. Some types of fraud include: * Billing Medicare for services you never received * Billing Medicare for services that are different than the ones you received (usually more expensive) * Continuing to bill Medicare for rented medical equipment after you have returned it * Offering or performing services that you do not need in order to charge Medicare for more services * Telling you that Medicare will pay for something when it won’t * Using another person’s Medicare number or card There are several things you can do to help prevent Medicare fraud. * Protect your Medicare number the same way you would protect a credit card number. Only give your Medicare number or your Social Security number to your doctors and health care providers. Be careful about giving it to people who offer you a service for free and asks for your Medicare number. * Protect your medical information. If people who are not medical professionals want to see your medical records or recommend services, don’t let them. * Learn more about what Medicare covers. If a provider tells you how to get Medicare to cover a service that normally is not covered, be suspicious. * Don’t accept services you don’t need. Some dishonest providers may try to pressure or scare you into getting unnecessary tests or other services. Don’t let them. * If it sounds too good to be true....If a provider promises Medicare will pay for mud treatments, Swedish massages or dance classes (these have all been actual fraud cases), be skeptical. The more you know about what Medicare covers, the less likely you will be to fall into a Medicare fraud trap. (Taken from the Medicare Rights Center )
Falls and home safety Home Adjustments: Make the home safe by following as many of these steps as possible: * Remove unnecessary furniture. Place remaining furniture so there’s enough space for walkers or wheelchairs. * Once the person in your care has gotten used to where the furniture is, do not change it. * Make sure furniture will not move if it is leaned on. * Make sure the armrests of a favorite chair are long enough to help the person get up and down. * Have a professional carpenter install railings where a person might need extra support. * Place masking or colored tape on glass doors and picture windows.

20 - TIMES OF TI • SPORTS
The best things in life aren’t things T
he year was 1979 and I was relishing in the thought of accompanying my father, brother and uncles on our annual trip to our fishing cabin deep in the Canadian outback. At the time, the brook trout there were nearly as plentiful as the black flies and fish in the five- and six-pound classes were not uncommon. We’d laugh, enjoy each other ’s company and forget about the day-to-day worries we’d left behind. The fish were a treat to catch, but were secondary to the camaraderie of close family.
SATURDAY May 15, 2010
It was from these trips that my love of the woods and water first emerged, and I owe a lot of that to my father for introducing me. So when I had an opportunity recently to repay at least part of that favor, I jumped at the chance. My Dad turned 75 on May 2. In recognition, he had one simple request: to celebrate his birthday with his two sons on a brook trout pond. I began planning several months ago to make that request a reality and spent the last week fishing with my Dad in the St. Regis Canoe Area. The trip was everything I knew it could be — a flashback to the days when my father was the one working so my brother and I could experience the pristine beauty of a glass-like pond at first light, capped by the fight of a spunky brook trout. I don’t think I’ve seen my father laugh so much in years and upon our return, he told me he will never forget his 75th birthday. Neither will I, Dad. Nor will I forget who I have to thank for showing me that the best things in life aren’t things. Happy birthday, Dad.
Some pictures really are worth a thousand words.
