Grocery store alternative sought in Ti By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — Ticonderoga officials are hoping to attract a super market to the community, although they’re learning it’s no easy task. Ti Supervisor Deb Malaney recently said she has been in contact with several grocery store chains without success.
“They always say the same thing,” she said. “They don’t want to go up against a big box store with a super market in it. That doesn’t mean we can’t and won’t continue trying.” Malaney declined to name WalMart as the “big box store,” but it’s the only one in the community that sells groceries. At one time Ticonderoga had three grocery stores. It had two — Grand Union and Great American — when
Wal-Mart moved into the community a decade ago. Now, Ticonderoga residents shop for groceries at WalMart or shop out of town. Many local residents want an option other than Wal-Mart and have asked local officials to bring in another store to compete. Malaney said she has engaged Aldi and Price Chopper in talks, noting the former Grand Union and former Great American buildings are

‘McTeacher Night’ planned to assist playground effort donate 100 percent of the food and beverages sold to the purchase and construction of a new playground at Ticonderoga ElementaryMiddle School. In May, the large playground located at the elementary-middle school had to be removed to accommodate construction of part of the new bus drop off area and access road. “Unfortunately, the current playground pieces no longer meet safety code once
they are removed from their original location,” said Sarah Chapin of the PTO. “Because of this, a new playground will be built at the complex. To help with its cost, teachers and staff from Ticonderoga Central School District will be cooking, cleaning-up and waiting on customers at McDonald’s on June 8. “Please help us reach our goal of raising $4,000,” she said.

Streetfest growing Deadline extended for interested vendors TICONDEROGA — Ticonderoga Streetfest organizers are promising a bigger and better event in 2010. Sue Rathbun, chairwoman of Ticonderoga Montcalm Street Partnership said, “Streetfest, to be held this year on Saturday, July 31, will be bigger and better than last year. We already have about twice as many food vendors and more sidewalk sale participants
than last year. Again this year we will have music, fun experiences for kids and opportunities to see classic cars, boats and stroll down the pedestrian mall which is normally Montcalm Street.” The Enterprise Committee of TMSP which has been working on the details of the event has announced that they are extending the sign up period for vendors to July 1 so that merchants and vendors have more time to announce their participation. Anyone wishing to participate may contact Rathbun at 585-2244.

Ti school should cut teacher aides To the Times of Ti:
I would like to remind the Ti school board that virtually all of us who can now be called senior citizens and attended public schools in urban and suburban schools did so with classes of 30 students per class and no teacher aides. In case you haven’t noticed, we are not walking around like bumbling idiots. Sure it is easier for teachers with smaller class sizes and teacher aides. It is also obviously better for the students. However, before taking such drastic actions as eliminating sports and music programs, significant money can be saved by increasing the student-teacher ratio and eliminating teacher aides. It is ridiculous having class sizes today with as little as
11 to 14 students per class plus a teacher aide as well. I think this falls into the “What Price Glory” category. Thomas Den Bleyker Hague

State important in doctor recruitment Wall a tribute To the Times of Ti: Thanks to the Times of Ti for reporting on the coming arrival of pediatrician Dr. Michael Celotti, who will see patients at Hudson Headwaters‚ Moriah and Ti Health Centers as well as the Elizabethtown Community Hospital. One important fact needs to be added about Dr. Celotti‚s return to the area (he is a Port Henry native). Hudson Headwaters and Elizabethtown Community Hospital had substantial assistance recruiting Dr. Celotti from the Doctors Across New York Program, instituted by the governor and the legislature in 2008. This program was created to help deeply rural areas (impoverished inner city areas, too) recruit physicians by providing financial incentives,
such as assistance paying off medical school loans. The governor, and our state legislators, Betty Little and Theresa Sayward, deserve our thanks for helping us bring Dr. Celotti back home. John Rugge, M.D. Hudson Headwaters Health Network

ommunities across the United States held Memorial Day observances last weekend. While all honored the veterans responsible for making America what it is, none could have been more moving that the Schroon Lake Veterans Memorial Wall dedication. The event marked the culmination of six years work to raise money and construct the monument, which lists more than 800 names of local residents who served their country from the Revolutionary war to the present. by Fred Herbst “It’s our sacred duty to keep the legacy of nation’s patriots fresh in the minds of future generations,” said Ed Donley, chairman of the wall committee, during the dedication ceremony. “That is why we erected this monument.” The memorial certainly will serve that purpose — and it serves another. It shows what can be done by dedicated volunteers. Schroon veterans — led by Donley and fellow committeemen Don Sage and Donald Sharlan — spearheaded the effort to create a fitting tribute to those who served. And they had plenty of help. Town officials, the board and highway department, made certain this effort wouldn’t fail by providing support. Local residents, year-round and summer, stepped forward to fund the $60,000 project. “We are particularly proud of what our veterans and the town of Schroon have accomplished,” Donley said at the dedication. “This project was a huge and overwhelming project for our small group of veterans.” It must have been overwhelming at times, but the veterans and people of Schroon Lake persevered six years to make the impressive memorial wall a reality. It’s not only a tribute to veterans, but to a community that joined together to accomplish a worthwhile goal. The town of Schroon showed it’s proud of its veterans by erecting this memorial. It should also be proud of itself.

Garden club makes donation to library TICONDEROGA — The Carillon Garden Club recognized National Garden Week June 1-5 by donating several books on gardening to the Black Watch Memorial Library in Ticonderoga. The following books were presented to the library: — The New York Times 1000 Gardening Questions and Answers, 2003 edition, is based on The New York Times column “Garden Q. & A.” with additional material by Leslie Land. Written in a conversational style it is divided into sections: The Flower Garden, The Landscape Garden, The Kitchen Garden, The Potted Garden and Garden Keeping. This 800 + page book is well organized and indexed for easy reference. — The Pruner ’s Bible, “A Step-By-Step Guide to Prun-
ing every plant in your garden.” A 2009 Reader ’s Digest publication written by Steve Bradley is well illustrated and a handy reference guide. — The Vegetable Gardener’s BIBLE, by Edward C. Smith, 2009 edition, is a guide for the back yard vegetable gardener. It is well illustrated and indexed for quick reference. Native Plants of the Northeast, 2005 edition, written by Donald J. Leopold, is a guide for gardening and conservation. The appendix alone is a great tool when it comes to plants that tolerate wet soil, dry soil, shade, plants with flowers that attract butterflies and hummingbirds and plants with fruits that attract birds and mammals. Librarian Heather Johns said, “The books will be lo-
cated in the reference area of the library until late fall so that those with pressing concerns during the summer can have their questions answered in a timely manner. Later on the books will be available on a lending basis.” “The Carillon Garden Club is happy to offer these books to the community and appreciates that area residents support the club’s fund raising efforts by purchasing holiday wreaths, making these books and civic beautification projects possible,” said Betty Rettig, garden club president. Rose Marie Viscardi, club chairwoman for National Garden Week selected the books and arranged for their donation to the library.

A new store was opened at 9 Washington St. The retail space doubled and a kitchen was added so the co-op could offer prepared foods and a deli. The Middlebury co-op offers a full line of grocery items, including locallyproduced items. “I’d like to see a co-op store,” Malaney said. “If not the Middlebury co-op, something like it. We’re investigating it.”

Wellness workshops slated By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com
Tonya Whitford Condon recently celebrated 10 years of service to the AdoptA-Highway Program on Earth Day with her 100th roadside clean-up along Route 74 in Eagle Lake.
TICONDEROGA — Wellness in the workplace will be discussed during a free program in Ticonderoga. The American Cancer Society and the Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a series of free workshops designed to help businesses contain costs, improve productivity and boost employee morale. The first workshop, “Workplace Solutions,” will be held Tuesday, June 8, 9 a.m. to noon at the Ticonderoga Community Building. “Attendees will learn workplace best practices for chronic disease prevention, the use of policies to encourage healthy behaviors, communication strategies that support the organization’s efforts and how to track results,” said Barb Brassard, chamber executive director. “Health Challenge” will be presented Tuesday, Sept. 14, 9-11 a.m. at the Ticonderoga Community Building.
“This free workshop introduces to you to a series of free, turn-key programs that support your employees in adopting a healthy lifestyle,” Brassard said. “You can see program demonstrations and receive access to the American Cancer Society’s Health Challenge program and implementation toolkit. Together we will develop implementation strategies that you can use in your workplace.” The final workshop, “Smoke Out,” will be held Thursday, Oct. 7, 9-11 a.m. at the Ticonderoga Community Building. “Over 23 percent of Essex County residents smoke,” Brassard observed. “Seventy percent of smokers want to quit. Workplace policies and practices can be used to help those who want to quit do so, and for those who have quit, help them stay that way. Attendees will receive a toolkit that includes sample policies and implementation schedule, health messaging to support efforts, and a variety of resources to assist workers in quitting and you in making this happen.” Breakfast will be provided at each workshop. To register or for more information call 454-4041.

Hi, I am 7-8 week old gray kitty who was thrown out on the side of the road and left to fend for myself. Luckily a nice person found me and took me to the vet. I have tested negative for FIV/FeLV and will be spayed and given shots. I am extremely loving and will just purr all day long. If you think you can give me the forever loving home I am searching for please call my Angel Connection friends at 585-6373.
Myself, my brothers and sisters, were thrown out alongside Chilson Hill road a few weeks ago to fend for ourselves, also abandoned were our cousins from a younger litter. The kittens will all be spayed/neutered and given shots and are in need of homes. One of our moms was also rescued and needs a home. All of these beautiful cats/kittens deserve a better life than the ones they started out with. These kittens can be seen at the Ticonderoga Animal Hospital or you can call Angel Connection at 585-6373 for more information.

Chamber names Citizen/Organization of the Year
Schroon Fish & Game Club to be honored SCHROON LAKE — The Schroon Lake Fish & Game Club is much more than a social group for outdoorsmen. The largest organization in the community, the club has a long history of service — which makes it the Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce 2010 Citizen/Organization of the Year. “The chamber of commerce will be recognizing the significant contributions that the organization has made to our community and area for many years,” said Rosemarie Ritson of the chamber. “The Fish and Game Club is a very dedicated group that helps with conservation issues, including preserving the quality of our lakes and streams, and provides training programs and other opportunities for youth.” Don Sage, club president, said the award is a surprise and an honor. “We didn’t know we had even been nominated, so it was a real surprise,” Sage

It’s an honor to be chosen.” The Schroon Lake Fish & Game Club will be formally
recognized at the annual chamber dinner Tuesday, June 15, at Drake’s Restaurant. The social hour will be 6 to 7 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. The price for the dinner is
$26 and is all inclusive. The public is welcome to attend. Reservations must be obtained through the chamber office at 532-7675 by Tuesday, June 8. With more than 250 mem-

Any veteran who served two years or more on active duty and grew up in Schroon or was conscripted from Schroon or was a resident of Schroon and a registered voter with an honorable discharge was eligible to be listed on the new monument. Veterans were also honored during parades in Hague and Crown Point, while Fort Ticonderoga
hosted a Memorial Day ceremony. The Schroon Lake memorial wall is actually two stone wings on either side of the town’s existing war memorial near the Schroon bandstand. Each wall has bronze plaques attached with names of Schroon veterans. The project has been six years in the making. Fundraising started in 2004 and ground was broken for the wall Nov. 7, 2007, as part of Veterans Day activities. “The memorial cost about $60,000 with the veterans raising over half and the town providing the remainder, making this endeavor truly a community effort,” Donley said. About 200 people attended the dedication ceremony that included music from the Word of Life band and Schroon Lake Central School chorus. Schroon Supervisor Cathy Moses acknowledged the efforts of veterans and those who worked to create the memorial wall. “We commend all our veterans for serving our country and keeping us free,” Moses said. “We also commendEd Donley and the local veterans who worked six long years to make this memorial a reality.” Donley was joined on the memorial committee by Don Sage and Donald Sharlan.
Donley said the project was difficult, although rewarding. “I want to thank everyone who helped make this memorial a reality,” he said. “We are particularly proud of what our veterans and the town of Schroon have accomplished. This project

bers the Schroon Lake Fish & Game Club is the community’s largest organization. It was formed in 1927 by a group of hunting and fishing enthusiasts. Harold Swan was its first president. Meetings were held at the Community House until the club purchased land and constructed its clubhouse on Hoffman Road in the 1940s. While the club was formed to promote conservation of wildlife and the environment, it has become much more. In the 1930s the club assisted the federal Civilian Conservation Corps and began youth programs. “I don’t think people realize everything we do,” Bunny Surprenant, club vice president, said, “especially with youth. Except for the school, there’s no one more involved with youth in our community.” Besides hosting youth hunter safety courses, the club sponsors the local Boy Scout troop, is home to the town Little League program, sends children to Camp Colby conservation camp, was a huge and overwhelming project for our small group of veterans.” There is still work to be done, Donley noted. Plans call for a sidewalk, seven flag poles and landscaping to be completed at the site.
awards scholarships to graduating Schroon Lake Central School students and holds an annual youth fishing derby. “We realize our youth will be our future members,” Sage said. “It’s important to get them interested and keep them involved.” The club has also contributed to many local projects in the community and at the school and sponsored environmental workshops for teachers. The Schroon Lake Fish & Game Club takes part in community events like the annual Fourth of July celebration and serves as home to the Schroon Lake-North Hudson Snowmobile Club. The club may be best known for its annual lobster and steak bake that attracts hundreds of people each September. It serves as the club’s primary fundraiser along with its annual ice fishing tournament in March.

CROWN POINT — New York State Department of Transportation Acting Commissioner Stanley Gee and Vermont Agency of Transportation Secretary David Dill announced May 28 that the project to build a new Lake Champlain Bridge between Crown Point and Addison, Vt., has been officially awarded to Flatiron Constructors Incorporated of Boulder, Colo., for $69.6 million. Work on the project will begin right away. Although the contract wasn’t signed until May 28, the deal had been announced two weeks ago. “The new Lake Champlain Bridge will be not only a magnificent addition to the beauty of the Adirondack and Green Mountains that surround the lake, but will restore a critical link for employment, health services, tourism and shipping be-

tween New York and Vermont,” Gee said. “I am pleased that in less than eight months we have been able to design and choose a contractor to build this unique structure that will offer a safe, efficient way for people to cross Lake Champlain.” “The sudden closure of the Lake Champlain Bridge back in October severed a critical link between counties that geographically may be in different states but emotionally consider themselves to be part of the same community,” said Dill. “The temporary ferry service that is now running between Crown Point and Addison was only the first step in helping to ease the burden that closing the bridge placed on commuters, business and families. Construction of the new bridge is what will finally bring this joint community not only back together but back to normal.” The new bridge spanning Lake Champlain will feature a Network Tied Arch center with traditional steel plate girder approach spans.
Bridge components are designed to be easily replaceable to reduce maintenance costs and multiple redundancies increase safety for the traveling public. Travel lanes will be 11 feet wide, with five-foot shoulders that will help accommodate larger trucks and farm vehicles, as well as provide ample room for bicyclists. Sidewalks will be built on both sides of the bridge. The new bridge will be built at the same location as the previous structure, in order to minimize historic and environmental impacts on the surrounding area. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of September 2011. The temporary ferry near this location will continue to run 24-hours-per-day, free of charge until the bridge is opened to traffic. Built in 1929, the previous structure was closed in October 2009 to ensure public safety after significant deterioration was discovered in the bridge's piers. In December, the historic bridge was demolished.
Thank You I want to thank all the adults and children who took pride in our Town to pick up road side garbage. Also to Sergeant Huddy and his crew at Moriah Shock. It was greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Eugene Ingleston Superintendent of Highways Town of Crown Point 68116

Closing the prescription drug coverage gap The Affordable Care Act passed by Congress and signed by President Obama this year contains some important benefits for Medicare recipients. If you have Medicare prescription drug coverage, and aren’t already getting Medicare Extra Help, Medicare will automatically send you a one-time $250 rebate check after you reach the coverage gap (also called the “donut hole”) in 2010. This rebate is the first step toward closing the Medicare prescription drug coverage gap.
Home saftey - a little slip can ruin your day Home Sweet Home can be a dangerous place. Falls, sprains, strains, and burns are a common source of injuries for older adults. In planning for home safety, follow a few simple guidelines, adapting them to your own needs: Smooth sailing. Transitioning from outside the home to inside, from down-stairs to upstairs, and from room to room should be as smooth as possible. Think level thresholds, nonskid flooring, and no loose rugs or carpeting to snag feet, walkers, canes, or wheelchairs. Light up. Not only does ample lighting prevent falls, it deters crime. Well-lit pathways, entrances, and driveways scare off burglars. Level the playing field. Keep work surfaces, frequently used drawers, tables, countertops, and storage areas at a comfortable height, to prevent the need to reach up high or bend down low to retrieve items or complete tasks.
Start your day with breakfast Unfortunately, far too many of us take an open-faced approach to nutrition - we skip breakfast. Plain and simple, if you’re skipping breakfast, there can be no perfect lunch. Here’s what happens when we don’t eat breakfast. We need calories for energy, and when we don’t fill up the tank to start the day, we’re forced to run on the fumes of last night’s dinner. When we skip breakfast, we average 18 hours - 3/4 of a day - without sound nutrient replenishment. Noon finally rolls around and we consume anywhere between 500 and 1,000 calories.

HAGUE — The fourth annual North Country Triathlon will return to Hague this June. It is scheduled for Saturday, June 26, at 8 a.m., starting and finishing at the Hague beach. The event provides an athletic event, while generating interest and funding for several social and environmental issues. This year ’s race will benefit One Percent For The Planet. “North Country Events has teamed up with One Percent For The Planet because we believe that the sustainability of the natural environment is fundamental to the sustainability of business,” Randy Engler, race director, said. “One Percent For The Planet recognizes that industry and ecology are inherently connected. It’s about realizing the positive effects of connecting businesses, consumers and nonprofits through philanthropy. And it’s about understanding that the true cost of doing business can be mitigated by a simple pledge to the planet. “North Country Events promotes challenging, multi-sport events designed to have the greatest impact on healthy lifestyles and the least amount of impact on the environment,” he said. Last year the race attracted 400 athletes. The North Country Triathlon offers racers Olympic and sprint distance courses. The sprint course is made up of a 750-meter swim, a 20-kilometer bike ride and a 5K run.
The Olympic course features a mile swim, 40-kilometer bike ride and 10-kilometer run. Both races start at the Lake George Land Conservancy beach, adjacent to Hague Beach. Swimmers go south toward Jenkin’s Point and return. Competitors then mount their bikes. The 40K course heads to Ticonderoga and up Chilson hill and back, while the 20K course goes south on Route 8 up Graphite Mountain to West Hague Road to the New Hague Road back to the beach. Both runs go south on Route 9N toward Silver Bay and back. Paul Fronhofer of Argyle won the Olympic distance event in 2009. He completed the mile swim, 40-kilometer bike ride and 10-kilometer run in 2 hours, 13 minutes, 24 seconds. Matt Dykhuizen of Shrewsbury, Mass., was second in 2:15:45. Kevin Crossman of South Glens Falls won the sprint race. He completed the 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike ride and 5K run in 1:10:56. Crossman won the Olympic distance event in Hague last year. Christopher Reap of Amherst, N.H., was second in 1:23:40. Adirondack forest fires: A clear and present danger
W
ith less than a one tenth of an inch of rain fallen over the region in the past month, the dangers of a major forest fire are readily apparent. Currently, with no rain on the horizon, the Adirondack forests remain a tinderbox. On the morning of Memorial Day, it appeared that fire had finally arrived, as a smoky haze covered the region and obscured the distant mountaintops. Fortunately for the Adirondacks, the smoke and haze were delivered on winds hailing from Quebec, where 52 fires had already burned more than a quarter million acres. According to news reports, the majority of the fires were burning near La Tuque, Quebec, about 150 miles northwest of Montreal. It isn’t the first time Canadian fires have affected our weather. In 2002, smoke from fires in the Lac St. Jean region of Quebec darkened the sky over Ottawa and Montreal and the smoky haze was evident as far south as Washington, D.C. The history of forest fires in the Adirondacks is significant, and stretches back a century to the most devastating fires that occurred around the turn of the 20th century, when the fires of 1903 and 1908 consumed nearly a million acres of forested lands. The Adirondack’s primary fire seasons have always been the spring and fall of the year, when there is an abundance of dry leaves, tinder and winds to fan a fire. I can recall several instances of fighting fires as a teenager, when the pay was meager but the food was al-
ways good. It always seemed that youngsters got the worse part of the job and were rarely assigned to the front lines. Typically, we were used for “mop up detail,” which required raking over a burned area to check for coals or an underground fire. We discovered the hot spots by checking for heat with a bare hand, which always brought blisters. We would then dig up the forest duff, spray it with water from an Indian Tank strapped on our back and move on. Firefighting has not advanced much since the 1970’s, as the same methods are applied today. In 1903, a 72-day drought brought on forest fires that scorched more than 600,000 acres of Adirondack lands, centered near Lake Placid. At the time, fires also burned in Schroon Lake, Lake George, Olmstedville, Newcomb, Ausable Forks, Saranac Lake and Clintonville. The NY Times reported at the time, an estimate of ground burned at more than 1,000,000 acres, or about one-fifth of the entire territory. The fires were so consuming that cinders were reported falling as far away as Albany, 150 miles to the south. Smoke from the fires eventually reached Washington, D.C.
Five years later, in 1908, the Adirondacks experienced the most devastating fires to date as the blazes burned almost continuously for nearly four months across the Park. By September 1908, both New York City and Quebec City to the north were blanketed in clouds of smoke from fires in Hamilton, Herkimer, St. Lawrence, Franklin, and Essex counties. The smoke was reportedly so thick, that ships were forced to use foghorns in NY Harbor. By the end of the month, fires had consumed lands from Lake Lila east to Sabbatis and all the way to Horseshoe Station near Tupper Lake. Other fires burned from the vast Bay Pond Park of William Rockefeller all the way to Saranac Lake village, consuming over 150,000 acres of forested land. The great fires of ’08 resulted in new laws to detect and prevent forest fires, that were enacted in 1909. To protect the forests, locomotives could only burn oil from April 15 through Oct. 31 to prevent the sparks that were responsible for so many fires. Loggers were required by law to limb everything left behind and new systems of fire surveillance included the construction of fire towers and state regulated fire patrolmen. The new legislation also provided the governor with the power to close both public and private forests during times of high fire danger. Despite such efforts, by 1910, nearly one-third of the northern forests had been cut over or consumed by fire. Today less than 10 percent of the Adirondack forest is considered old growth.
