Bridge construction expected to create jobs Workers, subcontractors can apply at Vermont office By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com CROWN POINT — Help Wanted: Labors to assist in the construction of the Lake Champlain Bridge. The $69.6 million project to reconnect New York and Vermont is expected to create at least 200 jobs for local workers, according to officials. Flatiron Constructors of Colorado, the firm building the span, expects to hire about 50 local workers along with another 150-200 subcontractors. Mark Mallett, Flatiron project manager, said a construction headquarters is being established on the Vermont side of the lake. Interested workers can apply there. The federal government will pay 80 percent of the bridge construction cost, using stimulus money. New York and Vermont will each pay 10 percent of the cost. The groundbreaking June 11 attracted two U.S. congressmen, both of whom touted the jobs to be created by the project. “This will help create jobs in communities that desperately need them,” U.S. Rep. Bill Owens said. “I hope to see many peo-
ple from my side of the lake, from my district, hired to work here. “I am pleased to see progress being made on the new bridge across Lake Champlain,” he added. “This is the next step in the process towards helping our local communities recover from the economic impact of the bridge closure. I’m hoping this will create employment opportunities for those looking for jobs in the area.” U.S. Rep. Scott Murphy agreed the bridge is vital to the local economy. “I am honored to be here as we begin to rebuild this critical part of our local economy,” Murphy said. “The loss of the bridge suddenly and severely reduced economic activity throughout the region. I look forward to continuing to work with Governors (David) Paterson and (Jim) Douglas to connect our two states and rebuild this entryway to the North Country.” The economic impact of the construction will reach

Fort Ti to host encampment TICONDEROGA — Fort Ticonderoga will host more than 700 re-enactors during its Grand Encampment Saturday and Sunday, June 26 and 27. Participants portraying the French, British, Provincial and American-Indian forces will bring to life the bloody struggle for North America that defined the continent as part of a global struggle for Empire between England and France. Visitors will experience the battle each day at 1:30 p.m. The program hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. “The Grand Encampment is a vivid and dynamic way to gain a deeper understanding of the struggle for America,” said Beth Hill, Fort Ticonderoga executive director. “The event brings to
life in a vibrant way the many voices that represented North America from 1754-1763. History will come to life for visitors with the sights, sounds and experiences of the mid-18th century in this signature event.” The weekend will feature an encampment of more than 700 re-enactors; an 18th Century Market Fair with 30 sutlers selling period wares and food; on-going demonstrations of military, civilian and American-Indian camp life including cooking, weapons demonstrations, children’s activities and more; 18th Century trades including blacksmithing, woodworking and papermaking; and battle narration begins at 1:30 p.m. and battles are at 2 p.m. Fort Ticonderoga was a significant
site in the struggle for America. Built by the French in 1755 on the strategic peninsula where the waters from Lake George flow into in Lake Champlain, it served as the strategic key to the continent. On July 8, 1758, a British force comprised of nearly 16,000 men attacked Fort Carillion, later to become Fort Ticonderoga, and was repulsed by a French garrison one-third its size. The Battle of Carillon was the greatest French victory in the French and Indian War and the bloodiest day on North American soil until Antietam during the Civil War. The revised plan calls for the purchase of two 32-passenger buses instead of two 68-passenger buses, a savings of $100,000; the elimination of pre-kindergarten transportation, a savings of $50,000; the elimination of the Young Scholars program, saving $25,000; cutting field trips in half, saving $15,000; cutting afterschool detention in half, saving $8,000; and cutting summer Building Leadership Team work, saving $6,000. It’s been a difficult budget year, McDonald said. The district is scheduled to receive a $435,000 cut in state aid in 2010-11 and debt service on the building project increases by $290,418. That means the district faced a $725,418 deficit without addressing any other increased costs. The 2010-11 budget eliminates 7.5 positions — 5 percent of its teaching staff, consolidates bus routes, eliminates out-of-district conferences, cuts department chairmanships, slashes the music enrichment program and cuts the high school student mentoring program. The staff cuts — two elementary teachers, two middle school teachers, a high school teacher, an adminis-

School administrators revised the original plan by cutting $279,081 from the initial proposal. The adopted 2010-11 budget totals $18,105,991. The amount to be raised by taxes in the budget is $9,581,358. That’s a 4.77 percent increase in the tax levy. Spending in the budget is down 0.2 percent from current levels. The increase in the plan is attributed to the on-going $23.8 million building and renovation project approved by voters in 2007. Superintendent John McDonald noted the help of Ti teachers in cutting the spending plan. In the original proposal teachers agreed to switch health insurance programs, which will save the district $150,000 a year. In the revised budget teachers also agreed to give up 0.55 percent of a scheduled pay increase that will save the district $31,081 and agreed to $25,000 in cuts to supplies, which they will cover through out-of-pocket expense. Teachers also agreed to freeze coaching and adviser pay, saving $19,000.

TICONDEROGA — Two women have been charged in connection with drug sale and use that led to a series of overdoses, according to Ticonderoga town police. The case began June 15 when three males, ages 16, 18 and 20, were treated at Moses Ludington Hospital in Ticonderoga, having overdosed on prescription drugs, police said. All three were released after treatment. The drugs were allegedly supplied by Sierra A. Daha, 19, of Westport. She was charged June 16 with five counts of fifth-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, a felony; three counts of second-degree reckless endangerment, a misdemeanor; and one count of endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor.
PoliceReport She was arraigned and remanded to the Essex County Jail for lack of $10,000 bail. On June 17, police arrested Vanessa L. Decker, 20, of Ticonderoga. She allegedly allowed people to congregate in her apartment to sell and consume drugs. Decker was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor; and second-degree criminal nuisance, a misdemeanor. She was released to appear in Ticonderoga Town Court July 7. Police continue to seek the source of the drugs, which were not prescribed to Daha.

Alternative to disgusting forum To the Times of Ti: I read Miranda Ross’s letter in the June 19 Times of Ti regarding the Ticonderoga Topix forum. I join her in being disgusted with Topix. In fact, I became so disgusted that I decided to start a truly dignified community forum. There is now an alternative to Topix! Go to http://www.tiforum.net/forums/ and you can join a moderated website that will not tolerate the kind of nonsense that occurs on Topix.
Since this is a new forum, it will take time for members to join and posts to start populating. Spirited discussions of a respectful nature are expected and there is no problem as long as they remain respectful. The forum,
http://www.tiforum.net/forums/ also has important features that Topix lacks. You can edit or delete your own posts, and you can attach pictures to your posts. The forum is completely free and businesses may post advertisements free as well. Please visit and register at http://www.tiforum.net/forums/ to help build a Ticonderoga Community Forum we can all be proud of. Roger J. Nolfe Ticonderoga
Hair clipping can help with Gulf spill To the Times of Ti: The oil spill in the Gulf is causing wide spread damage, threatening wildlife and livelihoods, and has tragic, farreaching implications. The Gulf Coast needs our help! Even from this far away there are things we can do. They need our oil-absorbent hair clippings and old tights to help contain the oil. Stylists and clients of Adirondack Hair Associates in Port Henry are sending their hair to the Gulf Coast to do their part in assisting with the large scale oil spill clean up process. When you get your hair cut at Adirondack Hair, you too are helping support this effort. Your hair clippings will be sent via Matter Of Trust to help where it is most needed instead of going to waste. Your hair will end up with either the Hair Mat Oil Spill

If you have nylons, please feel free to drop them off at Adirondack Hair, 4299 Main St. in Port Henry and we will forward then with our next shipment. For more information on what we are doing to help, visit us on Facebook or call us at 546-7717. To find out about the oil spill clean-up effort, visit MatterOfTrust.org. Matter Of Trust, established in 1998, is an ecological public charity that links ideas, sparks action and materializes flourishing systems. It concentrates on man-made surplus, natural surplus and eco-education. Follow them on Twitter and Facebook. Diane Melin Port Henry

uring the mid 1800s the consumer co-op movement sought to eliminate profits of the middleman and reduce cost of living for farmers and workers. Around 1840 several Farmers and Mechanics organization were set up in the Champlain Valley. By 1845, the consumer movement was well under way with the quantity purchasing of groceries, fuel and other goods at reduced quantity prices. Some groups offered sickness and old age insurance to members. From 1857 t0 1876 the organization was active in Ticonderoga. The president of the group was B.P.Delano. Other members were G.D.Clark, W.A.G.Arthur, Wm. E. Calkins, George Wright, B.F.Frazier, J. McCormick, C.H.Chilson and A. J. Cook. Dues were $1.00 per year and there were 50 members. Their first fair was held on Oct. 15, 1857, on what is known as The Central School Lot with 100 entries of horses, cattle, sheep, swine, poultry, farm equipment, butter, cheese, fruit, vegetables, honey, wine and six paintings by local artists. This fair was held for several years on the same location, and then fron 1865 to 1880 it was held on Mt. Hope. This site was bounded on the south by the Middle Road and the ticket office was built close to it. On the race track, the ability and speed of many a fine horse raised in this vicinity was a great attraction to all lovers of fine horses. After a few years, these fairs were absorbed by the county and the cornerlot fair ground became only a pleasant memory. Mrs. Johnson Streetroad. Bundles for Britain Bundles for Britain was begun in 1939 by Mrs. Wales Latham, a young New York society matron who began her charity work for Britain by organizing her friends to knit garments for British soldiers on the frigid North Sea. Mrs. Winston Churchill had put out a call for Englishwomen to knit these items and Mrs. Latham decided to answer the call from across the Atlantic. Her knitting circle was such a success, she decided to broaden her horizons. The genius of the operation was that anyone with idle hands, spare time, or spare clothing could participate. Clothing was sewn and knitted, repaired and made over. Woolen patchwork blankets and baby sleeping bags were created. Monetary donations came pouring in. The ladies of Ticonderoga joined in this cause in 1941. Every woman who could knit or sew and every man who could help buy materials was invited to join in. From Ticonderoga there were 59 large shipments of items destined for the British fighting force, their families and to the general population of England. Fortunately only two of the 59 were lost in transit. The groups local headquarters was in a vacant room on Montcalm Street where items were displayed to the public before shipping. There was a general chairman, a secretary a treasurer and five program chairmen to organize projects, purchase materials, collect the finished articles and pack for shipping. After VJ Day, the project slowed its pace, eventually closing its doors. This series of articles is compliments of Ticonderoga Heritage Museum, located in the 1888 building at the entrance of Bicentennial Park.

Students appreciate help To the Times of Ti: Recently our seventh grade Survival Class (Ticonderoga Middle School) completed a fundraiser to support the Children’s Safe Drinking Water Project. This project is sponsored in part by PUR Water Filtration Systems. Through this program, people throughout the world are given the opportunity to have clean drinking water. Students worked on ways to inform groups of the need in the world for clean drinking water and developed informational packets showing how each donation would help. Through generous donations from our school and community we were able to raise $1,000 toward this worthy cause. The $1,000 donation will allow 133 children in needy countries to have clean drinking water for a year.

The bands The Heard and Lord Howe will play 7-11 p.m. Friday. Danny Ray Edwards will perform in the park 6-10 p.m. Saturday. Amusement rides, games and vendors will be in the park along with the entertainment each night. Sunday will feature the 24th annual Montcalm Mile road race, a bed race, the July 4th parade and fireworks at 9:45 p.m. A highlight Sunday will be a Ti Idol reunion show. The local talent competition wasn’t held this year, but past participants are invited to perform in Bicentennial Park 6:30-8:30 p.m. Interested performers can contact Angela Brown at 585-2233. Jim Cawley, an Elvis impersonator, will perform on Sunday 8:30-9:45 p.m. prior to the annual fireworks display. then the parade at 2 p.m. The Montcalm Mile will start in front of Wicker Ford on Wicker Street and proceed down Montcalm Street to the finish at the Heritage Museum. A record field of more than 200 runners competed in the 2009 Montcalm Mile. Race director Jim Cunningham hopes to top that mark this year. It’s a downhill course that virtually assures runners of personal bests and attracts most of the region’s top athletes. Also attracting runners is the fact the race is run minutes prior to Ticonderoga’s annual Fourth of July parade, which means hundreds of spectators line the course offering encouragement.
Registration starts at 1 p.m. at Wicker Ford. For entry information contact Cunningham, 26 Amherst Ave., Ticonderoga (Email jim4c4@yahoo.com). Race information can also be found online at the LaChute Road Runners Club website — www.lachute.us Entry fee is $8 for adults and $4 for children younger than age 16. Awards will be presented to all finishers. Age group results will be posted on the web site. www.lachute.us The bed race will be held along Ticonderoga’s Montcalm Street following the Montcalm Mile and before the annual July 4th parade. The bed race will start at the Ti fire house and end at the Heritage Museum. It

will feature five-member teams. “At the halfway point there will be a fire drill,” Bechard said. “The (team) member on the bed will have to take a pusher ’s spot and a pusher will have to become a rider. Silly costumes are encouraged, but please keep in mind this is a family event.” There will be a $25 registration fee for each team. A section of the fire house parking lot will be set aside for beds. Registration, rules and registration forms for the race can be obtained on line at best4thinthenorth.com or at Century 21.

Sincere Thanks The family of Barney Whitford would like to express sincere thanks to those who provided care and kindness throughout his challenging illness. Special thanks to Julie Anderson, PA and the staff at the Westport Health Center. Julie’s honesty, compassion and genuine kindness was a great comfort. Also, Dr. Paolo Fedi, Gastroenterologist Associates of Plattsburgh and Dr. Jan Duus and staff at the Fitzpatrick Cancer Center/Elizabethtown Community Hospital. Barney was always appreciative of the uplifting attitude of the nurses and staff. He believed a smile and positive atmosphere to be as good, if not better, than any medicine or treatment. Thanks as well to the staff at High Peaks Hospice. With their support and guidance Barney was able to remain in his home, surrounded by loving family and caring friends. There are many people who have shared kind words and fond memories. We thank you for your thoughtfulness, cards, calls and concern. Cancer is not kind; ALL of you were... Lake George soldier killed in Afghanistan By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com LAKE GEORGE — A soldier who grew up in Queensbury and Lake George was killed in combat June 15 in eastern Afghanistan — and his friends and area community leaders expressed grief this week over the news. Benjamin Osborn, 27, a 2002 graduate of Lake George High School, was recalled as a friendly, giving person — who decided to Benjamin make a positive difference in the Osborn world through volunteering to serve in the U.S. Army. Friday, while his parents and other family members were in Dover, Md. to escort his remains home, New York State Gov. David Paterson issued an order for flags on state government buildings to be flown at half mast. Osborn, an Army Specialist, died of wounds he sustained when his unit was attacked by small arms fire and rocket-
propelled grenades in Konar, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team of the 101st Airborne Division. “All New Yorkers grieve today with the friends, family and fellow soldiers of Specialist Osborn," Paterson stated. "On behalf of all New Yorkers I extend our condolences — But while we mourn his loss, we will honor and remember his service to our nation. He will not be forgotten." Osborn had just married Nicole LaPier of South Glens Falls in February, and the two had been living in Clarksville, Tenn. Osborn had lived on Ridge Rd. with his parents in the Town of Queensbury, but he attended Lake George schools, and upon graduation held jobs in Lake George Village. Osborn’s family members said Benjamin joined the U.S. Army three years ago and left the states in April to go to Afghanistan. They said Benjamin was killed by gunfire after his squad came under heavy fire and Benjamin volunteered to be the gunner. Lake George Town Supervisor Frank McCoy said he knew Osborn after graduation when he worked as a bartender at the Lobster Pot Restaurant and Mario's Restaurant, and Mc-
Coy would visit the establishments. “Ben was a really good kid,” McCoy said. “He volunteered to serve his country, and he gave the ultimate sacrifice for us all.” Lobster Pot owner and Town Councilman Scott Wood said Osborn had a good work ethic and related well to his customers — as well as enjoying camaraderie with his co-workers, many of whom were fellow graduates. “Ben was a nice kid with an easygoing, friendly personality — he jumped right in talking with people having dinner or at the bar,” Wood said. "Ben went overseas and he was dedicated to fighting for freedom —and you have to have a lot of respect for those who do that.” Lake George High School Principal Francis Cocozza said that the school district’s staff remembered Osborn fondly, and he predicted the entire community and Warren County will be honoring Osborn according to his family’s wishes. “We as a school, village and community are mourning the loss of one of our own,” he said. Authorities said Friday that Osborn’s body would probably be flown Monday to Glens Falls, and that a funeral would likely occur here next week, but arrangements

Hague church to host program
From page 10
HAGUE — Hague Wesleyan Church will host “Eyewitness,” a dramatic live account of the life of Jesus Christ through the eyes of the Apostle John, Saturday, June 26, at 6:30 p.m. The church is located at 9803 Graphite Mountain Road.
weren’t yet finalized. Lake George Village Mayor Bob Blais noted the proliferation of signs around Lake George honoring Osborn, and how people all over town were talking about the loss of Ben. Blais said that municipal officials were standing by to confer with the family to decide what type of ceremony or observance was appropriate. “This is a tragedy that effects all of us — it makes no difference if citizens knew him or not, we all feel his service to the nation should be recognized.” Around the village, a dozen or more marquees proclaimed messages on Osborn’s behalf. The sign in front of Mario’s read: “Rest in Peace Fallen Soldier Ben Osborn.” A marquee at The Georgian proclaimed, “You will be missed, Ben Osborn.” Nearby at the Surfside Motel, their sign said, “Our thoughts are with you, Osborn family.” A message of “Rest in Peace” was displayed at the Lake George Chamber of Commerce, Super 8 Motel, the Holly Tree Motel, Adventure Golf, Quality Inn, Duffy;s Tavern, The Lobster Pot, and Super 8 Motel. Lake Motel offered three words, “God Bless Ben.” Friday, U.S. Rep. Scott Murphy (D-Glens Falls) released a statement on Osborn’s death. “My heart goes out to the family of Ben Osborn — This true American hero made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation, and we owe him our eternal gratitude.” Calling hours were held Wednesday, and the funeral was scheduled for June 24 at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery. Those who seek to pay tribute to Osborn by helping fund a scholarship for disadvantaged student-athletes may do so by contributing to the Ben Osborn Memorial Fund at the Glens Falls National Bank. State Sen. Betty Little (R-Queensbury) said the Senate observed a moment of silence June 17 in his honor — as occurred Friday at the Warren County Board of Supervisors meeting. Little said her “deepest sympathy” goes out to the Osborn family. “Like so many others in our community, I want his family to know how grateful we are for his service and his bravery.”

Moriah Shock to remain open By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com
Moriah Supervisor Tom Scozzafava, right, went to Albany four times to personally meet with Gov. David Paterson in an effort to save the Moriah Shock Incarceration Facility from being closed. Those efforts paid off last week when Paterson announced funding for the prison is in his 2010-11 budget.
MINEVILLE — The Moriah Shock Incarceration Facility — and its 102 jobs — has been spared. Gov. David Paterson announced last week he has restored funding for the prison, located in the Moriah hamlet of Mineville, in his 2010-11 executive budget. “It’s absolutely great news for the community and Essex County,” Moriah Supervisor Tom Scozzafava said. “The day I got the call that they were going to close Moriah Shock was devastating news. This is wonderful news.” Paterson and leaders of the Senate and Assembly, as part of the state budget process, reached an agreement to continue operating the Moriah facility, as well as a medium-security correctional facility in Ogdensburg. Both facilities had been slated for closure under Paterson’s original budget proposal. Scozzafava made four trips to Albany to lobby the governor and state leaders to keep the prison open. He also met with the governor and other state officials when they came to Crown Point for Lake Champlain Bridge activities. “It was a team effort from Day 1,” Scozzafava said of the effort to save Moriah Shock. “The Essex County Board of Supervisors, County Board Chairman Randy Douglas, the county manager, everyone worked very hard.” Paterson was the key, though, according to Scozzafava. “The governor was willing to meet with us and he listened,” Scozzafava said. Paterson called Scozzafava with the news June 18. “He told me, ‘You people have been hit hard enough with the bridge closing and economy’,” Scozzafava related. “He showed real compassion for our residents.” The Moriah Shock Incarceration Facility houses nonviolent offenders in a military
boot camp-type program that involves exercise, physical labor, academics and substance abuse treatment. It is one of four shock incarceration facilities in the state. The 200-bed camp employs 102 and is the second-largest employer in Moriah. Scozzafava said some former inmates contacted state officials asking that Moriah Shock be spared. “The program is a great service to first time offenders,” said Scozzafava, who once worked at the facility. “It’s turned around thousands of lives. Even former inmates supported Moriah Shock.” The Moriah supervisor also noted the efforts of state Sen. Betty Little and Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward. Little brought Sen. Ruth Hassell-Thompson, a Democrat from Westchester County who is chairwoman of the Senate Crime Victims, Crime & Corrections Committee, to Moriah for a tour of the facility. Besides elected officials, the New York State Correctional Officers Police Benevolent Association, the union that represents correction officers, lobbied for Moriah Shock and there were several public rallies to demonstrate community support. “This agreement recognizes the incredibly challenging fiscal times New York is facing, while also making clear that our public safety cannot be put on the chopping block,” said Donn Rowe, president of the New York State Correctional Officers Police Benevolent Association. To further support keeping the prison open, Essex County created an economic analysis of the impact closing the prison would have on Moriah, the county and the region. The report cited an $8 million annual negative impact on Essex County should the facility close. Moriah Shock opened in 1989 on the site of the former Republic Steel Fisher Mine. Republic Steel employed more than 600 people when it closed in 1972.
Moriah Central School students recently completed a project on “recycled transportation. Joshua Hayford made space shuttle, Owen Fleury made a dirt bike transport truck and Zachary Baker made a ferry boat.

SATURDAY June 26, 2010
Schroon Lake voters OK budget on second attempt To limit spending in the 2010-11 budget, Schroon Lake teachers agreed to a one-year contract calling for no pay increase. Administrators also agreed to a pay freeze. The budget also cuts $34,721 from custodian services, eliminates the $14,000 summer school program, saves $5,000 by merging bus runs, cuts $3,000 from instructional development and saves $3,000 by limiting the annual school trip to New York City to every-other year. In the revised budget there is an additional $10,000 cut in supplies, the elimination of a $22,000 minivan purchase, a savings of $11,850 by cutting junior varsity basketball, a savings of $6,400 by eliminating late bus runs, a savings of $2,250 by eliminating drug education services and a savings of $425 in school board supplies. Since the original budget was proposed, the board also learned its debt service on the district building project will be $63,177 less than anticipated. A proposition to purchase a bus at a cost not to exceed $95,000 didn’t fare as well with voters. It was rejected, 251-185, June 15. That same proposition was rejected by a 245179 count on May 18.
Proposition to purchase new bus is defeated By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com SCHROON LAKE — Schroon Lake Central School District voters have approved a 2010-11 budget. A $7.2 million spending plan was adopted, 244-200, June 15. Schroon Lake residents rejected a proposed $7.4 million budget in balloting May 18 by a 242203 margin. The school board revised that original proposal, trimming $160,802. The new budget totals $7,286,413. That’s a 0.86 percent decease from the current budget of $7,349,590. The 2010-11 tax levy totals $5,731,913. That’s a 2.63 percent increase from the present levy of $5,585,090. The spending plan rejected by voters in May called for a 5.5 percent tax increase.
Joe DeZalia and Danielle Barror team up on a class project at Schroon Lake Central School. Voters approved the 2010-11 school budget June 15.

The church is located on the corner of Main Street and Leland Avenue. The community room faces Leland Avenue. It is handicapped accessible, including the rest rooms. Also at 11 a.m., the Seagle Music Colony will perform in nearby Fountain Park. A “bounce around” and games for children will be held in the town park near the beach from noon to 5:30 p.m. Also near the beach will be Art Bucket 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. The band Loose Connection will perform at noon in the town band stand, followed by Keystone at 3 p.m. An “Adirondack Raffle” will be held by the Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce at the Glens Falls National Bank 3-6 p.m. and following the parade. Winners will be announced at 8 p.m. At 3:15 p.m. awards will be presented in the annual Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce Fishing Tournament. The awards will be given in front of the chamber office on Main Street. Sue Tillotson will provide music on the Community Church porch 4-6 p.m. The Adirondack Pipes and Drums will perform a “mini-concert” at 5:30 p.m. at the corner of Main and Dock streets. Members of the Schroon Lake Fish & Game Club, the community’s citizens of the year, will serve as grand marshals for the 56th annual parade at 6 p.m. The parade will run from Hoffman Road to the town’s park area. Paul Bubar will serve as parade announcer at the Community Church. The Word of Life Collegians will perform patriotic music at dusk and the fireworks display over Schroon Lake will take place at dark. Throughout the day Schroon Lake merchants will offer sales and specials. Hutson said holding the Independence Day celebration on July 3 presented a few challenges. That same day is Canada Day and Minerva Day, so some bands and fire companies that normally come to Schroon won’t be available. “We have enough music and I’m happy with the way things are coming together,” Hutson said. The event chairwoman credited the community with making the annual celebration a reality. Financial contributions, particularly, have been strong, she said. “People have been extremely generous,” Hutson said. “I’ve gotten checks from summer residents in California, New Mexico, Arizona, all over. It’s been wonderful.”

Crown Point teen joins group CROWN POINT — Dorothy Jane Siver is in good company. The Crown Point teen has joined the Carolina Rose & The Bluegrass Girls, a North Carolina-based Bluegrass band. A fiddle player, her first show with the group was in Rosine, Ky., the home of Bluegrass legend Bill Monroe. The weekend was a reunion of all The Bluegrass Boys that had played with Bill Monroe. The annual event and the Bill Monroe Foundation was founded by Campbell Mercer, who is also the founder of the RFD-TV show Cumberland Highlanders, which airs every Saturday night. Mercer played mandolin for Carolina Rose & The Bluegrass Girls as a special guest during the Kentucky show. Siver, th daughter of Ron and Jennifer Siver, has also recently completed her debut CD with Ampersand Records in New Jersey. Information on Siver can be found online at http://www.dorothyjanesiver.com

beyond jobs, New York Gov. David Paterson said. “Flatiron will not only employ people from the region but will use equipment from the region,” Paterson said. “When the first car goes across that bridge, it will be a new era.” The new bridge will be built at the same location as the previous structure in order to minimize historic and environmental impacts on the surrounding area. Construction is expected to be completed in September 2011. The Modified Network Tied Arch Bridge will be a steel structure with an arch along the center span. Steel used will be treated for enhanced corrosion resistance. Multiple redundancies will give the bridge at least a 75-year service life. Bridge components are designed to be easily replaceable to reduce maintenance costs. Travel lanes will be 11 feet wide, with five-foot shoulders that will help accommodate larger trucks and farm vehicles, as well as provide room for bicyclists. Sidewalks will be built on both sides of the bridge. The former Lake Champlain Bridge was closed last October after significant cracking was found in the structure’s support piers. It was demolished in December. A free ferry service now operates in place of the bridge. That service will discontinue when the new bridge opens. In business since 1947, Flatiron has extensive experience building major interstate bridges all across the United States and in western Canada.

Fun summer days A potential danger that comes from the summer sun is skin cancer. “It’s a time of the year when the sun’s intensity is greatest,” says Anne M. Hartman of NIH’s National Cancer Institute. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation - invisible rays that are part of the energy that comes from the sun and artificial sources like sun lamps and tanning beds is strongly associated with skin cancer. “Over 1 million new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the U.S. each year, outnumbering at least the top 5 body system cancers combined and possible all other cancers combined,” Harman says. You don’t have to give up outdoor activities or avoid the sun completely. Just follow these precautions.: • Cover up. Choose shirts and pants to protect as much skin as possible. • Use sunscreen. Choose a sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. • Wear a hat. Choose a hat that shades the face, neck and ears. • Wear sunglasses. Protect your eyes with sunglasses that block UV rays. • Limit sun exposure. Stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the UV rays are the strongest. (Revised from News in Health)
A week’s worth of caregiver activities Here are some daily activities for caregivers to try. Use these as a way to decompress and to enhance your caregiving experience. Try as many as are practical for your schedule! • Write down what you like best about being a caregiver. This could be anything, from discovering a level of patience that you never knew you had to a happy caregiving memory. • Think of something that you do as a caregiver that you never thought you would be able to do. • Make a list of caregiving tasks that are difficult. Think of someone who might be able to assist you, and ask them to help. • Do something relaxing, like reading a book or taking a walk. • When someone offers you help, take it! Most people that offer truly want to help! • Call a friend and plan an activity together - maybe coffee and a movie. • Make a favorite meal for yourself, or, order takeout from a favorite restaurant. Running
Montcalm Mile to precede Ti parade By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — The 24th annual Montcalm Mile will race through the streets of Ticonderoga July 4th. One of the fastest, most-competitive road races in the North Country, the foot race will be held prior to the traditional Independence
Day parade. The Montcalm Mile will start at 1:45 p.m. in front of Wicker Ford on Wicker Street and proceed down Montcalm Street to the finish at the Heritage Museum. Summer arrives Adirondack style: Let the fun begin
A
cross the Northern Hemisphere, summer officially began Monday, June 21 at 7:28 am. However, if the quality of weather were taken into account, it seems as if we’ve been enjoying summer since early April. For a few lucky, summer lasts year ‘round. For them, it has become almost a state of mind, it is part of the mystery of the Adirondacks and its residents. We are willing to suffer through a long, hard winter, because we know that when summer comes, time slows down. It’s a quieter, cooler and fresher time, with a late light and a quick night. The pace slows and people return to camp life. It is announced by the late night wail of a loon or the throaty roar of an old, ChrisCraft motoring up the lake in the morning’s fog. In my mind’s view, summer begins with the season’s first muggy night. It comes at a time when the hoot of an owl can still be heard from the nearby woods. It happens as lightning bugs flicker in the darkness and June Bugs begin to bounce off the window screens. It’s the two months that allow us to put up with the other 10 months of unpredictable weather. Sure, I know the roads will get busy, but often, the traffic is bringing old friends home, whether to a camp, a tent or a childhood home. In an odd way, summer has the unique ability of bringing us all back home. It is a season of many scents. Likely the most odiferous odor, a smell that continues to conjure up the most memories, is the scent of camp. It is an old smell that lingers inside all the old camps and it has the potency, with just a simple wiff, to make us all kids again. It is one part woodsmoke aged cedar and one part moth
balls, mixed with a squirt of Ol’ Woodsman, a wet, wool blanket and the lingering smell of old canvas. It is a smell that can only be duplicated in camp, and it is a scent that serves to transport back to calmer, easier days when the time drifted by slowly and everything was still exciting. Camp life hasn’t changed much over the years. Certainly there are a number of conveniences that have raised comfort levels as the gear is lighter and the chow is better, but time spent in camp is still the time spent in camp. It’s more than something in the air. In the early 1880’s, a writer by the name of Wachusett from Long Lake, wrote in a letter to Woods and Waters magazine, “With the Sportsmen who have come into the wilderness there mingles this year a larger proportion than ever before of invalids attracted here by reports of the marvelous healing properties in the air of especial benefits in the cases of lung diseases. “ “The majority of these people derive invaluable benefit from their visit because most of them come in the initial stages of their malady at first capable of the cure.” He continued, “The singular sweetness of the air is apparent to all and is even more manifest in rowing on the water than in walking or camping in the woods. There is nothing enervating and at the same time nothing dangerously bracing about it.”

While the Tapanzee Bridge requires six lanes of traffic and nearly a mile of roadway to span the mighty Hudson River, just 300 miles to the north in Newcomb, only a simple, single-lane bridge is necessary to cross the river.
Santanoni Wagon Rides If you’d like a taste of camp life, with a touch of the grand old heydays of the Adirondacks, it may be time pay a visit to the little village of Newcomb. Newcomb is home to Great Camp Santanoni, Huntington Forest, the APA Visitors Interpretive Center, the headwaters of the Hudson River and lots of wild land. It is also the place where Dave O’Donnell is now regularly offering horse and wagon rides into the once grand, Great Camp Santanoni. A winding five-mile journey over a wooded road brings visitors to the camp, located on the shore of Newcomb Lake. Guests can visit for the day, or pack in gear and a boat to spend the week. And while visitors can still pedal a bike to the lake, the ride in a covered wagon is a far bit easier, and the shaded top seems to keep the deer flies at bay. O’Donnell, a native of Newcomb, has returned to his boyhood home to take the reins from Ken Helms, who had ably handled horse packing chores in the region for many years. O’Donnell will continue to uphold the traditions, as did Helms, of packing in hunters, anglers and other lovers of the outdoors. Reservations are available from Santanoni Wagon Rides at 518-582-2360. Enjoy the ride, the scenery at the end of the trip is worth it! Joe Hackett is a guide and sportsman residing in Ray Brook. Contact him at brookside18@adelphia.net

State Teachers’ College in Fredonia, NY, The Julliard School of Music, and the Columbia University Opera Workshop in New York City. She gave many voice recitals in various locales between Port Henry and New York City in the 1940s. She retired in 1985 from Trans World Airlines after more than two decades, having served as a Charter Sales Specialist. She married Joseph Pearce Walsh in 1949. Her husband predeceased her by many years. Marietta loved her music, art, Lake George and the Adirondacks, and all of God’s creatures. Walsh, his wife, Marian Wait Walsh, of Saratoga Springs; her beloved grandsons, Colin J. Walsh and Evan (Pete) Walsh; several cousins; and her “adopted” daughter, Diane Kingsland, and her husband Roger of Altamont, NY. A private memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at the family’s convenience in August at St Patrick’s Catholic Church in Port Henry, NY, and she will be put to rest alongside her parents in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Moriah, NY. In accordance with her wishes, there will be no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes of 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs(584-5373). Donations in her memory may be made to the Capital District Humane Association, Inc., 89 West Street, Mechanicville, NY 12118.
