CV-Tech Students to expand Moriah Court By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com PORT HENRY — Moriah has a plan to expand its court house. Champlain Valley Tec students will construct a 576 square feet addition at the current court building to help the town meet a state mandate. Moriah Supervisor Tom Scozzafava said CV-Tec instructors Tom Rodriguez and Kevin Shaw have agreed to make the court expansion a student project. The town will lay the foundation this summer and students will erect the addition starting in September. “It’s a great learning experience for the kids and it saves the taxpayers,” Scozzafava said. “I don’t see any other possible way we could afford it.” New York State has mandated court expansion in Moriah since 2008. “I think we can do it with the money we’ve received from the

2010 Ticonderoga Car Show
A super weekend for classic cars, comedy and community By Lou Varricchio newmarketpress@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — From 1932 Model A Fords to 1960s muscle cars—with a few classic pickups added to the show fleet for good measure—the annual Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce Antique & Classic Car Show, which includes the Super Wheels qualifying event, has a vehicle that’s going to catch the eye of the most demanding car buff. This year’s judged show, which will feature more than 200 displayed vehicles, is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 8, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Bicentennial Park. The Ticonderoga show, now in its 18th year, was started through the vision and hard work of Tim and Carol Whitford, according to JoAnn Geisel of the Ticonderoga Area Chamber. “Tim has been a long-time show volunteer and remains one of the driving force behind the auto show,” she said. “Tim and Carol will be involved again this year.” There will be over 100 trophies awarded in 35 different vehicle classes. The cost to register a vehicle is $10 in advance or $15 at the gate. Unlike similar car shows, this event is a real deal—it’s free for spectators. In addition to being among the best of the Champlain Valley’s car shows, the event kicks off Saturday with a poker run starting at 12:30 p.m. at Adam’s Rib Restaurant. Then, throughout the afternoon, the Ticonderoga Farmers’ Market will offer show attendees a variety of produce and assorted goods—all locally grown and produced. On Saturday evening, the “show prep” is topped off with the second annual Headliner Saturday Night concert.
Last year’s Headliner was a such big hit, according to Geisel, that the venue was bound to become a permanent fixture to the weekend. ”It’s an ideal prelude to the car show the following day,” Geisel said. The 2010 headliner will star comedian-actor Rusty DeWees as “The Logger.” His one-man show of North County humor will keep the audience in stitches. In addition to the stage, DeWees has become a familiar face to local screen fans. He has performed on TV’s “Law and Order,” and most recently, in the indie film about North Country bootleggers, “Disappearances”. “The Logger” concert will be held at the Best Western in Ticonderoga; the twohour performance starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are on sale for $20. Only 215 tickets will be sold, so reserve your seat early. There will be a cash bar during the show Call 518-5856619 for additional information or to buy tickets. Food and entertainment will be available throughout the weekend, as will music, games, prizes, and more. On
Sunday, there will be over 100 trophies awarded in 35 different classes. The cost to register a vehicle is $10 in advance (deadline Aug. 6) or $15 day of the event. The event is free for spectators. For details, go to www.ticonderogany.com/carshow.html or call 585-6619.

Families compete in golf, learn about lake conservation BOLTON LANDING — A dozen or so families had fun Saturday while contributing to the preservation of the region and learning about area ecology, according to an official of the Lake George Land Conservancy. The organization’s second annual MiniGolf Tournament and Cruise was held Saturday, and despite morning rain and a bleak forecast, 34 people participated, Land Conservancy spokeswoman Sarah Hoffman said. The rain stopped just in time for the eight teams to make their first strokes. After tallying the scores, ties occurred in both the adult and youth divisions, resulting in the four finalists re-playing the most difficult hole for a tie-breaker. Terry Benedict won the tie-breaker, becoming the 2010 winner for best adult score and Terrence Benedict and Adam Bergamini remained tied with the best youth scores. Best Team Score was awarded to the Benedict family, from Hague. Created as a fun way to raise awareness and support for the Conservancy’s land conservation programs, the Mini-Golf Tournament and Cruise featured 18 holes of minigolf followed by a one-hour cruise aboard the Minne-Ha-Ha, an authentic paddlewheel steamboat on Lake George. Hoffman said the fundraiser was a success. “This casual event got families out to enjoy Lake George, and the cruise allows them
to see the land from the water and get young kids involved,” she said. Saturday’s fundraiser was the first of four Conservancy events this month. The others are: • July 18 – Guided Northwest Bay paddle and shoreline clean up, no charge to participate; • July 24 – Annual Meeting and Field Day — field options include a timber rattlesnake educational hike with Dr. Bill Brown, a presentation by DEC on the bat populations and white-nose syndrome, and the first guided hike along the connector trail between Gull Bay Preserve and the Last Great Shoreline in Putnam. This event costs $10 per person including lunch; • July 31 – Barbecue Benefit for land conservation in Bolton — canoe raffle is featured — $25 per adult, $15 per youth ages 615, 5 and under, free. For information about any of the Land Conservancy’s summer events, see www.lglc.org, or call 644-9673.

Ticonderoga Church hosts CPR class TICONDEROGA — First United Methodist Church of Ticonderoga had 25 members with others from surrounding communities recently trained and certified in CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) use. Training was sponsored by First United Methodist Church of Ticonderoga and Dr Cornelia Freyhofer of Inter-Lakes Health, and championed by Pastor Scott Tyler. The one night course was taught by Thomas Beach EMT, CIC and Environment of Care Manager, Inter-Lakes Health. The First United Methodist Church of Ticonderoga is the first church in the immediate area, and the first in the conference to place an AED on the premises. Having an AED on site is thought by the American Heart Association to greatly enhance opportunity for return of spontaneous circulation after cardiac arrest. Another class is planned for the fall.
Northern Lake George Rotary had their new officer installation breakfast July 6 at the Silver Bay boathouse. Beth Barton-Navitsky is the president, Chip Devenger is the president-elect, David Cornell is treasurer and John Barber is secretary. Chip Devenger received the Rotarian of the Year award and Sal Santaniello was presented the outstanding Community Service award. Merribeth Elling was installed as a new member of the club. Northern Lake George Rotary meets every Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. at Watson on the Silver Bay campus. Visitors and guests are always welcome. Ti Festival Guild to host Hague Jazz Quartet TICONDEROGA — The Hague Jazz Quartet will take the stage in the Tuesday Concert Series of the Ticonderoga Festival Guild on July 20. All concerts begin at 8 p.m. and are at the K. of C. Pavilion behind their building on Montcalm St. Parking spots are available at the Pavilion and can be reached by traveling Carnegie Place and turning right, or
Tower Ave. with a left turn at the Elks Club. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. The Hague Jazz Quartet is a recent addition to the North Country music scene. Bruce Ergood, Bob Offerman, Rick Rossoff and Michael Vassallo began playing together several summers ago and then moved out for professional gigs. They appeared last summer in the Hague Park Concerts and at a Rotary fund raiser. Several years ago they presented an evening of jazz for the Guild’s President’s Party. On Tuesday they will present an evening of ”cool” and familiar jazz favorites. Tickets for the concerts are $10 for adults and $5 for students, available at the entrance and at Rathbun Jewelers on Montcalm Street in Ticonderoga. Refreshments will be sold at the snack bar by members of the Knights of Columbus. Sponsor for the evening concert is Northern Lake George Rotary Club. The Festival Guild is supported by grants from the New York Council on the Arts, by donations from area businesses and by memberships from local residents and visitors. Information is available at 518-585-7015.
Arts Trek The Arts Trek program for children on July 21 is “Jack and the Beanstalk,” the 2010 children’s opera presented by the Seagle Colony. This operatic re-telling of the classic fairy tale mixes in music from Gounod’s Faust. The action-packed program, with its larger than life characters, shows that love and friendship are more important than material goods. Seagle Colony operas are fun for all ages, while providing a wonderful introduction to this art form for all children. The sponsors of this Arts Trek are the New Horizons Club and the Ticonderoga Kiwanis Club. The Arts Treks are supported by grants from the Southern Lake Champlain Trust, the International Paper Foundation, the Essex County Division of Youth, the Arts Council of the Northern Adirondacks, by a donation from Stewart’s Shops, and by individual donors.

INSURANCE “DID YOU KNOW”
Kathy Shiell HIGHER DEDUCTIBLES MAKE $ENSE Most financial experts recommend assuming higher deductibles on your home, auto, and business insurance. Why? Because it really doesn’t make financial sense to buy insurance for small losses that you can handle out of pocket with little or no financial difficulty. ********* Choosing higher deductibles lowers your rates. Higher deductibles result in premium savings you can pocket or use to upgrade your coverage to be better protected against larger losses, with little or no increased premium. ********* Insurance is best purchased to provide financial protection against large property or liability losses that if not fully covered by insurance would likely result in financial hardship. A good insurance program should protect you against catastrophic loss, not small manageable losses. ********* We can assist you in deciding what deductibles make the most $ense for you. Thank You! We would like to extend our gratitude to everyone who helped make our trip to the National History Day Finals in College Park, Maryland possible. The National History Day program began last September with more than 600,000 students participating in several categories. We advanced by taking 1st place at the Regional Level and 2nd place at the State Level, to find ourselves among the top 2,400 in all 50 states and 4 territories in the National Competition. We are the first students from our region to have ever made it this far!
MOUNTAIN TIME AUCTION held a 50/50 to help raise funds for the Ticonderoga Youth Cheerleading during our July 10th auction. Kelly Cross won the 50/50 and donated the money back to the cheerleaders.
We competed in the Junior Group exhibit category. This category includes students in 6th through 8th grade. Our category was divided into several rooms where we placed 4th in ours. Even though we did not walk away from Nationals with a blue or red ribbon the knowledge and experience we gained while in the Washington, DC area among our History Day peers is golden.
Thank You Kelly!

6 - TIMES OF TI • OPINION
Community comes through in Schroon To the Times of Ti: Thank you never seems to be good enough, but I am here to say thank you in a big way. Back in February, I put a press release in the Times of Ti requesting early donations for the 4th of July parade, as the funds were low from last year due to a reduction in donations because of the economy. I didn't even have enough money to get started with sending letters or for postage, etc. This was my first year as chairperson and I really had to do some scrambling to play catch up. Consequently, the press release. Once again, Schroon Lake came through. Donations started coming in immediately, giving me the money to get started and they didn't stop coming. I did a mass mailing and received money, literally, from all over the country. I received checks from California, Florida and New Mexico, just to name a few. I never realized how many people own second homes in Schroon Lake. I was/am overwhelmed by the donations that came in ranging from $2 to $500 from all walks of life. Everyone was so generous. I even received a check in the mail this week, days after the parade, saying they hoped this helped. All donations helped, no matter how small or large. I am so grateful to all of you that gave so generously. I was able to pay the bills and have enough money to get started next year. I would like to send my appreciation to all who helped to

make this parade and the whole days' events happen. They are too numerous to mention here. But I would like to say a special thank you to my husband, John, without whom I never could have accomplished this. And also to Deirdre & Jon Schrader for all of their help and to the many other behind the scenes people who never get the recognition they deserve, but are always there to help and without whom the parade and days' events could not have happened. I would also like to say thank you to all the parade participants. It was a wonderful parade with a few new things and a full schedule. It was a very hot day and I'm sure marching in a parade was not an easy thing to do. Even though it started at 6 p.m., it was still very hot and humid but the Lord smiled on us and gave us a beautiful day, and of course, it goes without saying that the fireworks were spectacular!! Thank You to Cathy Moses and all of the town council for helping this event to take place. I wish I could thank each one individually but space does not allow that, but each of you know who you are, whether a donator, helper, participant or all of the above. I look forward to doing this again next year and know that people will be as generous as they were this year and we will work on making the days' events as wonderful as they were this year!! Thanks again to one and all. Kate Huston, Chairperson-Schroon Lake 4th of July Parade

Parks Department went above and beyond To the Times of Ti: I would like to commend the Schroon Lake Parks Department for the excellent job they did with clean-up of the town following the July 3rd activities. There were a large number of people at the Town Beach, along the parade route, and to watch the fireworks. As I drove into town early the next day I was amazed to see that the entire town was spotless, not one scrap of paper to be seen. Thank you to those that worked so hard to keep our town beautiful! Linda Milsom, Schroon Lake
The beginnings of the Red Cross By Denise Huestis
Special thanks in Ti To the Times of Ti: The Best Fourth in the North Committee would like to extend a special thank you to everyone that helped, participated in and supported our Fourth of July weekend this year. Without it, we wouldn’t be able to continue the long standing tradition that the Fourth brings. We hope to continue to provide everyone with an enjoyable weekend next year. Molly Bechard Best Fourth in the North committee Ticonderoga
Clara Barton and a circle of acquaintances founded the American Red Cross in Washington, D.C., on May 21, 1881. Barton first heard of the Swiss- inspired movement while visiting Europe following the Civil War. Returning home, she campaigned for an American Red Cross Society and for ratification of the Geneva Convention protecting the war injured, which the U.S. ratified in 1882. Barton headed the Red Cross for 23 years, during which time it conducted its first domestic and over seas disaster relief efforts, aided the United States Military during the Spanish-American War, and campaigned successfully for the inclusion of peace time relief work as part of the International Red Cross Movement. The Red Cross received its first congressional charter in 1900. This charter sets forth the purposes of the organization that include giving relief to and serving as a medium of communication between members of the American Forces and their families and providing national and international disaster relief and mitigation. The Ticonderoga chapter of the Red Cross was active during WWI knitting for the soldiers. World War II again saw them knitting for the military and organizing fund drives to support the fighting men. Over the years, they have taught first aid and swimming classes, given aid to fire and natural disaster victims, collected clothing for the needy, made and purchased blankets for Sunmount Sanitorium and furnished milk for undernourished school children. The Red Cross is an independent, volunteer led organization financially supported by voluntary public contributions and cost- reimbursement charges. The president of The United States is the honorary chairman of the Red Cross. This series of articles is compliments of Ticonderoga Heritage Museum, located in the 1888 building at the entrance of Bicentennial Park.

Fort Author Series features Bloody Mohawk author TICONDEROGA — Fort Ticonderoga’s Author Series kicks off on Sunday, July 18, with Richard Berleth, author of Bloody Mohawk: The French and Indian War & American Revolution on New York’s Frontier. The program takes place in the Deborah Clarke Mars Education Center at Fort Ticonderoga at 2 p.m., followed by a book signing at 3 p.m. in the Fort Ticonderoga Museum Store. The program is included in the cost of admission. Berleth’s sweeping historical narrative chronicles events instrumental in the painful birth of a new nation from the Bloody Morning Scout and the massacre at Fort William Henry to the disastrous siege of Quebec, the heroic but lopsided Battle of Valcour Island, the horrors of Oriskany, and the tragedies of Pennsylvania's Wyoming Valley massacre and the Sullivan-Clinton Expedition’s destruction of the Iroquois homeland in western New York State. Caught in the middle of it all was the Mohawk River Valley. In his narrative history of the Mohawk River Valley and surrounding region from 1713 to 1794, Professor Richard Berleth charts the passage of the valley from a fast-growing agrarian region streaming with colonial traffic to a war-ravaged wasteland. The valley’s unique geography plays a key role in the cataclysmic events of the French & Indian Wars and the battles of the American Revolution. Patriots eventually wrenched the valley from British interests and the Iroquois nations, but at fearsome cost. When the fighting was over, the valley lay in ruins and as much as two-thirds of its population lay dead or had been displaced. But by not holding this vital inland waterway the gateway to the West, the river between the mountains America might have lost the Revolution, as well as much or all of the then poorly defined province of New York. Richard Berleth received his Ph.D. from Rutgers University in 1970 and is currently Chair of the Communication Arts Department at St. Francis College in Brooklyn Heights, New York. Previously, he taught English at Pace University and Russell Sage College, was a managing editor for Time/Life Books, a marketing manager for McGraw-Hill, and a senior vice president at Simon & Schuster. His other books include The Twilight Lords: An Irish Chronicle, The Orphan Stone: The Minnesinger Dream of Reich, and two works for children: Samuel’s Choice and Mary Patten. Additional “Author Series” programs will take place on July 25, Aug. 8, Aug. 15, and Oct. 17. Each program begins at 2 p.m. and is followed by a book signing at 3 p.m. in the Museum Store. Fort Ticonderoga is a private not-for-profit site dedicated to preserving and interpreting the important history in which it played such a vital role. The French & Indian War and the American Revolution are explored with tours, family programs, demonstrations of 18thcentury crafts as well as world-class exhibits and collections. The King’s Garden is part of the reconstruction history of the Fort and also offers tours and programs. Both are open from 9:30 - 5 daily and are covered by the same admission charge: $15 for adults, $13.50 for those 60 and older, $7 for children from 7 through 12. Children under 6 and residents of Ticonderoga and the surrounding communities; Crown Point, Hague, Putnam, Silver Bay, Orwell and Shoreham, are admitted free of charge. Information on this and all the activities see www.FortTiconderoga.org

Ann Fox
May 31, 1972 - July 1, 2010
August 21, 1925-June 23, 2010
TICONDEROGA — On July 1, 2010, Jeremy Philip Crank joined his mother and Grandpa Crank in eternal peaceful rest. Born on his Grandpa’s birthday, May 31 in 1972 in Albany, NY, he was the beloved son of Philip L. Crank, Jr. and Bonnie (Bibbo) Crank. In addition to his mother and Grandpa Crank (Philip L. Crank, Sr.), he was pre-deceased by his loving Grandpa and Nannie Bibbo (Harold and N. Joan Bibbo) and his Aunt Patty (Patricia Bibbo Barley). Jer is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Carrie (Allen) Crank, his father and step-mother Philip and Martina (Mars) Crank, his sister and brother-in-law, Heather (Crank) and Shannon Davis, his stepsisters, Alexis and Miranda Harrington and his grandmother, Helen Crank. Jer is also survived by his nephews, Cameron and Andrew, his niece, Lauren, his aunts, Joanie, Kathy, Sheila, and Lloyan, his uncle, Stew, many cousins and his canine kids, Sly and Scooter. All the kids visiting Poppie and TT’s house will miss playing the “Uncle Jer game.” Jer graduated from Ticonderoga High School and Paul Smiths College. He was a survey crew chief in Austin, Texas and Kingston, New York, and loved his job in the great outdoors. He was also an avid volunteer fireman. Services are private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to your local volunteer fire department in his memory. God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and the wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; Enjoying one moment at a time; Accepting the hardships as the pathway to peace. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilcox & Regan funeral home of Ticonderoga.
CROWN POINT — Ann Fox, 84, of Sugar Hill Road, passed away at her home, Wednesday, June 23, 2010, after a hard fought battle with cancer. Born in Brooklyn, NY, August 21, 1925, she was the daughter of the later Mary (Reilly) and Louis Imperial. Mrs. Fox was a resident of Crown Point since 1989 and was a graduate of Samuel J. Tilden High School of Brooklyn, NY. Ann and her husband John were humanitarians who divided their time between work and family to help the homeless and stay animals. CP School From page 1 Superintendent Shari Brannock expects a smooth transition. “The district is very fortunate to have wonderful replacements for terrific people who are moving on,” Brannock said. Dixon, who has undergraduate and graduate degrees from SUNY-Plattsburgh, spent the past academic year as an intern with Mace. “Agatha knows the district inside and out,” Dixon said. “She leaves big shoes to fill, but she’s been wonderful in sharing her knowledge. “I have enthusiasm for education and leadership,” she added. “I really enjoy bettering curriculum and working with people. I’m excited.” Brannock said Dixon has been more than a teacher at Crown Point. She’s been involved in student extracurricular activities and been part of the school’s College For Every Student and America’s Choice programs. “We’re excited to have Ms. Dixon,” Brannock said. “She’s done a tremendous amount for our students beyond the class room.” The principal’s position at Crown Point is cut from 12 months to 11 in the new budget. Dixon will be paid $62,500.
Mace spent 38 years at Crown Point, 32 as a home and careers teacher before becoming principal six years ago. “I want to thank everyone at Crown Point Central School for 38 wonderful years,” Mace said. “We have wonderful staff and students; I sincerely mean that.” Mace plans to remain involved in education, mentoring student teachers through SUNY-Plattsburgh. McDonald comes to Crown Point from Champlain Valley Educational Services where she has served as school community coordinator for the safe schools/healthy student project. Prior to that she was a program director for CFES. McDonald has a bachelor ’s degree from Union College and a master ’s from Saint Rose. “With her guidance degree and her background working with students and schools we feel she’s an excellent find and is a great match with our programs,” Brannock said. The guidance position was slated to be reduced in the 2010-11 budget, but has been restored to full time. McDonald will be paid $37,382. Russell said she welcomes the challenges at Seton Catholic, but will miss Crown Point. “I’ll treasure the 20 years I had at Crown Point,” Russell said. “Seton Catholic offers a great opportunity for personal and professional growth. I’m looking forward to the task ahead at Seton.”

Plenty to see at this year’s Essex County Fair
Shotgun Red and his accomplice, Steve Hall, headline the entertainment at the Essex County Fair this year as frontmen for the Shotgun Red Show, performing 7 p.m. Aug. 12 at the fairgrounds. Photo provided
By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com WESTPORT — The 162nd Essex County Fair, the Adirondack Agricultural Fair, is scheduled for Aug. 11-15, and has many fun attractions, events and activities to choose from. Some new entertainers will light up the stage at this year ’s fair, which, along with some long-time favorites, are sure to please audiences of all ages. Music and comedy act Steve Hall and the Shotgun Red Show headline the grandstand acts this year. For 10 years, the group performed on TNN’s series “Nashville Now” and now tours the country with its award-winning blend of live country music and laugh-out-loud puppetry. As part of their three-month summer tour, Steve Hall, Shotgun Red, and the Shotgun Red Band will make an appearance Thursday, Aug. 12, 7 p.m. at the Essex County Fair ’s main grandstand. Another new performance features the gospel music of Howie Campbell Sunday, Aug. 15, with shows 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at the grandstand.
Also new this year is the Torres One Ring Family Circus, presenting daily acts and operating a pony ride. Mad Scientist Jeff Boyer will be performing his shows daily. Also, The new Wild Animal Experience Petting Zoo, open each day, boasts at least 20 baby animals that children can pet. As always, there will be plenty of animals on exhibit with horse and cattle shows being held Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. Don’t miss the entertaining cattle costume class 4 p.m. Saturday and the all new “Dancing to Music” horse show 2 p.m. Sunday. The conservation area will be bustling this year with archery and air gun shooting for youth, a fish pond for kids, wildlife and forestry displays, live demonstrations featuring birds of prey and a river hydrology display, all available daily. For the third consecutive year, Plattsburgh-based oldies trio The Norsemen will be performing at the fair. Catch them 4 p.m. Sunday. Also returning are Gary Finney and the Upstate New Yorkers, who will perform at the grandstand Wednesday in between harness races, which start at noon. The ever-popular demolition derby has been moved to Saturday this year, commencing Aug. 14. at noon. Tractor pulls will be held Aug. 15 with the 6500 group starting at noon and the 9000 group 5 p.m. at the grandstand. Garden tractor pulls will be held Wednesday, Aug. 11, beginning 5:30 p.m. Castle Rock Entertainment is once again in charge of midway rides, which operate each day starting at noon. Chainsaw carver The Sawdog also returns and will be auctioning some of his work Aug. 14. The Essex County Fair Idol Contest returns with auditions being held 6 p.m. Aug. 11 and 2 p.m. Aug. 12. Qualifying contestants will then perform in the final competition 7 p.m. Aug. 13 on the south lawn stage. Idol contestants compete for cash prizes in three categories: 12 and under, 13-17, and 18 and up. The contest is open to any Essex County resident and entry fees are included with admission. CV-Tech From page 1 (state) Office of Court Administration,” Scozzafava said. “It’ll be a good experience for the students and it fits our budget.” The state Office of Court Administration has promised Moriah nearly $50,000 for the construction. No one can blame Moriah residents if they’re confused about the court project. Steven Gold of the New York State Office of Court Administration told the Moriah town board in June 2008 the present 12x14 foot room that serves as Moriah town court is inadequate and must be addressed. The town had plans to erect its own modular building to house its court and police department adjacent to the town hall at Park Place in Port Henry. That project was shelved when the cost soared. Originally expected to cost about $170,000, estimates for a new court building
reached as high as $500,000 because of state regulations and mandates. Scozzafava believed the final cost would be about $300,000. Town trustees then considered several short-term solutions to the court situation, including renting space. Officials felt they had found space, the Mountaintime Furniture Building on Broad Street in Port Henry, but found it would cost $200,000 to bring the building up to state court code. Finally — or it seemed at the time — the Moriah town board voted unanimously a year ago to ignore a state order to construct a new house, citing affordability. Then, hoping to get federal funding, Moriah officials noted the possibility of reviving a years-old plan to construct a joint municipal building with the village of Port Henry to house town court and police along with the village fire department. That initial plan fell apart when a suitable location and timetable for construction couldn’t be found.

Valerie Hunsdon and son move into new home By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com CROWN POINT — Valerie Hunsdon is a success story in the eyes of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development agency. The agency presented Hunsdon with a ceremonial key to her new home July 2, as part of a “Welcome Home” event highlighting National Home Ownership Month. Hunsdon, a single mother of one, recently received assistance from the USDA’s home loan program and the Housing Assistance Program of Essex County. Hunsdon said she was excited by the recognition and said the process to owning her home was a long and difficult one. Hunsdon’s journey to where she is today began more than 18 years ago, when a car accident
left her paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. Five years ago, she and her husband divorced, leaving her to move with her then 1-year-old son into her parents’ home. “There weren’t any apartments that were wheelchair-accessible,” Hunsdon said. Then, when her niece was purchasing her own home, she told Hunsdon about the Housing Assistance Program of Essex County and how the program has grant money available to qualifying first-time home buyers. Working with USDA Rural Development, Hunsdon made up the difference to purchase her home by receiving a low-interest loan. All that was required was for her to take a homeowner education course. “They want to make sure you can handle money and can budget and be able to afford your mortgage, power and things like that,” explained Hunsdon, who said it took a year from the time she contacted the housing assistance program to the completion of the course. During that time, Hunsdon also began working with Michelle and Eric LaBounty of Plattsburgh Housing Outlet in Plattsburgh to design a new modular home. “We spent months designing a house that would be accessible for me and give us
the space we need,” said Hunsdon. Hunsdon and her son, Travis, have been sharing a bedroom since they moved into her parents’ home. Because the home is twostory, however, Hunsdon said she really has only had access to the ground floor because of her condition. “My bed is two feet away from his and I’ve got a dresser pinched in between my bed and the wall,” she said. “I don’t mean to sound ungrateful or selfish by any means, but we’re just confined.” Downsizing from living in their own home to sharing a portion of one floor of a house has also meant living with mainly the bare necessities. “I have a storage shed full of my life that I don’t even know what’s in there from five years ago,” said Hunsdon. When Hunsdon and her son finally occupy their new home, which is nearing completion, it will be an amazing feeling, she said. “It’s going to be like I have my life back,” said Hunsdon. “Again, I don’t mean to sound ungrateful but it will be just so incredible to have our own place.” Hunsdon’s new home will have three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a combined kitchen, dining room and living room area, complete with an attached laundry area. “It’s going to be 1,400 square feet,” she said. “It’s going to be incredible. I’m very,
very fortunate.” Hunsdon said she wouldn’t have gotten to what she calls “a community event” without “an overwhelming amount” of help an encouragement. “I can’t tell you the support I’ve had since my accident, since the separation from my husband and through this with my house,” she said. “The list is just so long of the people who have helped me. It didn’t matter what kind of turmoil popped up ... I’m just thankful to everyone.” “I am thankful for all of the blessings from God,” she added. Hunsdon said she especially thanked the LaBountys for their help in the process, becoming more than people who sold her a new home. “Michelle and Eric were great. They were so personable,” said Hunsdon. “It’s like they’re part of the family now.” “It has been a really great learning experience working with Valerie,” said Michelle LaBounty. “I have learned so much about her needs that will translate well for future clients who also need wheelchair accessibility.” “It has been so great watching her family and entire community rally around her as she enters this next chapter of her life,” LaBounty added. “I feel very lucky to have met her and for the opportunity to help her build her new home.”

Ti runner wins Duane Crammond scholarship By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — The Duane Crammond Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to an All-American. Lee Berube, who earned All-America honors twice running for SUNY-Geneseo this past year, has been named winner of the sixth annual award. The $1,000 award given by the LaChute Road Runners Club goes to a Ti High graduate who participated in varsity cross country and/or track & field who attends college full-time. The winner, selected by a scholarship committee, is a person who reflects the strong academic, athletic and character traits of Crammond. Crammond died in a car accident in 2005 at age 24. “It means a lot to win this award,” Berube said. “I really didn’t know Duane, but I remember him at races and know people really respected him.” Berube finished second in the 5,000-meter race at the NCAA Division III indoor track championships in Greencastle, Ind., March 13. A member of the SUNY-Geneseo team, he then ran a leg on the school’s distance medley relay team that finished eighth at the national championship meet. The top eight finishers in each event are named All America. During the outdoor season Berube set personal records at 1,500 meters (3 minutes, 53 seconds) and 5,000 meters (14:29) and qualified for the national championship meet where he finished ninth at 5K. “I was kind of disappointed (in the outdoor season),” Berube said, “but anytime you make it to nationals that’s OK.” He also runs cross country. Last fall he led SUNY-Geneseo to its best-ever finish at the national championship meet. Berube, who will be junior in the fall, won the state Class D cross county championship while at Ti High along with a slew of other Section VII and Champlain Valley Athletic Conference titles. Berube is the son of Ellie and Jesse Berube of Putnam. Mike Woods, SUNY-Geneseo distance and cross country coach, said the winter season was important for Berube. “He's had a terrific season and his two All-America season this winter is just the tip of the ice-burg for him,” Woods said. “I hope he can stay healthy the rest of the way and you will see more outstanding performances from him. “He’s a hard worker and fun to coach,” the coach said. “He’s still learning how to race, but he’s put up great numbers so far. ” Berube is a biology and secondary education major at

Geneseo. He hopes to become a high school teacher and coach. Matt Karkoski, scholarship committee chairman, said Best is a good choice for the award. Best has many of Crammond’s attributes, he said. “Duane was a great runner, but he was so much more,” Karkoski said. “He set a great example for younger runners through his work ethic and determination to succeed. “We’re pleased we can honor Duane with a scholarship and, at the same time, help someone meet their college goals,” he added. Crammond, the valedictorian of the Ti High Class of 1999, was a cross country and track champion in high school. He went on to become an honor student at RPI, where he majored in engineering and was captain of the college’s cross country team. He was also the leading distance
runner on RPI’s indoor and outdoor track teams. After graduation from college, Crammond dominated local race races. In 2003 he won the Montcalm Mile in Ticonderoga and the Race the Train event in North Creek. He was third in the Whiteface Uphill Run in Wilmington, fourth in the Prospect Mountain Road Race in Lake George and fifth in the Lake George to Bolton Adirondack Distance Run. He capped that season by winning the Adirondack Marathon in Schroon Lake. Those who wish donate toward the scholarship can send contributions to Karkoski at 25 Black Point Road, Ticonderoga 12883.

Summer heat brings schools of bass The heat of the summer arrived in the Adirondacks last week, bringing with it a mix of brilliant sunshine, soaring temperatures, high humidity and a series of passing thunderstorms. The string of 90-plus, degree days drove many local residents to the rivers and lakes seeking relief from the heat. At the same time, the warmer temperatures drove both bass and trout to the deeper waters looking for colder, more oxygen rich conditions. Across the region, residents and visitors alike flocked to the beaches, boat launches and local swimming holes. It was a good week to enjoy the outdoors. Obviously, New Yorkers have been visiting their local waters quite regularly, for even though NY state residents do not have an opportunity to enjoy a full four seasons of water based recreation. Despite this fact, New York has been ranked among the top ten boating states in the country according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association, (NMMA). As expected, Florida heads the new list of top ten boating states with annual boat sales of $1.2 billion in 2009. The study reveals that New Yorkers invested over $381 million dollars on boats and boating related recreation last year. Following Florida on the Top 10 list are Texas, California, North Carolina and New York, with Lake Champlain being named the most popular destination. Louisiana, Washington, Delaware, Michigan and Minnesota round out the top ten. Listing the state’s Hot Spot as Lake Champlain, NMMA noted, “Spanning 120 miles from Quebec to Whitehall, Lake Champlain is renowned for its beautiful scenery and boating opportunities, particularly fishing - named one of the top five bass fishing destinations in the U.S. by FLW Outdoors magazine.” The Big Lake also ranks very high on a list of the most productive bass waters in the country, a fact that will not be missed by the college crowd; who will arrive this weekend to participate in a major bass tournament on the National Guard FLW College Fishing, Northern Division Series. These anglers give a new meaning to the term a ‘School of Bass’. Scheduled for Saturday, July 17, the National Guard FLW College Fishing bass tournament is the third of four stops in the Northern Division Series. Other stops in the Northern Division Include Mt. Island Lake, in Mount Holly, NC, the River
in Marbury, MD and Lake Erie in Erie, PA. But the college boys (and girls) competing in the series won’t be competing for just cash and a trophy. The winning team in the National Guard FLW College Fishing National Championship will also qualify for the Forrest Wood Cup, one of the most prestigious bass-fishing championships in the nation with a top prize of $600,000. The winning team member with the heaviest total weight in the National Guard FLW College Fishing National Championship will have the opportunity to compete in the pro division and the other member of the winning team will compete in the co-angler division of the Forrest Wood Cup. FLW Outdoors provides boats and drivers for each competing team along with travel allowances. All participants must be registered, full-time undergraduate students at a four-year college or university and members of a fishing club recognized by their college or university. The top five college teams from each tournament will qualify for the regional championship where the firstplace team wins $25,000 cash for their school and a bass boat for their fishing club. The top five teams from each regional advance to the national championship where the first-place team wins $50,000 for their school and $25,000 cash and a bass boat for their fishing club. “The lake is full of bass,” said FLW Tour pro Pete Gluszek, who has a win and two top 10 finishes on Lake Champlain. “The unique thing about Lake Champlain in July is that the tournament can be won with either small or largemouths. ”The largemouth will be in the grass and flippin’ and froggin’ will be the way to catch them. The smallmouth will be deeper and drop-shotting in 40–50 foot depths will be key.” The college anglers will take off from Plattsburgh Boat Basin located at 5 Dock Street in Plattsburgh at 6 a.m. Weigh-in will be held at the boat basin as well beginning at 1 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.
Bass, both smallmouth and largemouth are abundant in the North Country, as evident in this shot of a happy angler. Plattsburgh State which supports a bass team, has a boat entered in the Northern Series. Currently, the 2010 ranked college bass teams in the country include 1. North Carolina State University, 2. Auburn University, 3. University of North Carolina – Charlotte, 4. Virginia Tech and 5. University of Wisconsin – Madison.
Another good one….gone. It is with great sadness that I note the recent passing of another extraordinary, North Country outdoorsman. Marshall Fish of Westport died last week. Although renowned as a gunsmith, a trade he practiced for over 65 years, Marshall was also a crack shot and a wise mentor. His marksmanship skills with a rifle were once featured in Ripley’s Believe It or Not, when Marshall cut a playing card in half, edgewise, while shooting over his shoulder and taking aim with the aid of a handheld mirror. His abilities in dealing with sportsmen and women were no less skilled and he aided many outdoor enthusiasts in the pursuit of their hobbies. Marshall was always a great source of reliable information and was especially keen on the art of blackpowder shooting, long before the advent of smokeless powder and inline rifles. A longtime collector of Winchester Model 94, lever action carbines, Marshall was especially distraught when we spoke in 2006. He was outraged that U.S. Repeating Arms, under the Winchester brand, had announced that they would no longer manufacture the “gun that won the west.” The company’s move signaled the end of an era, and so does Marshall’s passing. Glorious day, 170 young anglers mark annual kids fishing derby
INDIAN LAKE — The weather gods were shining once again on Adirondack Lake in the Town of Indian Lake during the Indian Lake / Blue Mt. Fish and Game Association’s annual Kids Fishing Derby held July 3. A glorious day, hardly a breeze, as 170 children vied to catch the largest fish that they could coax out of the water. By the end of the day 446 sunfish, perch, pike, and bass had been landed, weighed, tabulated, and returned to the lake. Jaine Smith, 8 years, of Kattskill Bay, NY earned the honor of catching the largest fish of the day, a 2 pound 1 ounce large mouth bass. In addition to a first place certificate, Jaine was awarded a $30 first prize check and a trophy for the largest fish of the day. The trophy was dedicated in memory of George Nemec of Warrensburg in recognition for all of the support that he had provided to the Kids
Fishing Derby in recent years. Saturday was a prolific day for Kim Johnson, Dillsburg, PA, who led the way with catching the most fish from shore, 49. Other first place winners were Kyle Williams Jr., North Syracuse, NY who brought in the largest (and only one of day) bullhead; Chase Hutchins, Indian Lake and Tim Lutz, Anoramdale, NY tied for largest perch. A few rock bass were caught with Jack Tunkel, Pennington, NJ narrowly winning with a nine ouncer. In the small mouth category, a thirteen ounce bass caught by Will Sullivan, Great Meadows, NJ led the pack. First and second prize certificates and modest cash prizes were awarded to kid fishers for each species of fish caught. While everyone could not win a first prize, every child who entered was a winner. The expectation after tossing a line in the water was
really reward enough. Many children caught fish and enjoyed the thrill of bringing the fish to the colorful weigh stations where members of the Fish & Game Association took great care to treat each fish as a potential prize winner. An ongoing casting contest awarded multiple fishing lure prizes for tossing a lure into a floating ring, raffles provided prizes throughout the morning for all kid fishers and a grand raffle at the derby’s end awarded over 30 rod and reel combinations. All this plus over 450 hamburgers & hot dogs, and soft drinks provided free to participants and their adult supervisors. An ice cream wagon provided a cool treat at mid-morning. Funds for the derby were provided by local businesses, Fish and Game Association member donations, friends of kids fishing, and a few out of town and national companies. This year, the Indian Lake Community Yard Sale made a significant donation as well. Many parents new to the derby were gratefully incredulous that the entire day was without cost. The generosity of all of the donors and the dedication of the Fish and Game Association members and friends who work at the derbies has resulted in an annual event unrivaled in the North Country. The Indian Lake/Blue Mountain Lake Fish and Game Association, Inc. is an organization dedicated to the promotion of better fishing and hunting, sportsmanship, and conservation including training and support of youth activities associated with these goals. Weather safety tips Summer is almost here, so it’s a good time to remember that older adults are susceptible to heat-related illnesses, including heat rash, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Here are some safety tips: 1. Drink plenty of water. Older people have a diminished sensitivity to thirst, so watch fluid intake. 2. Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, preferable made of natural fibers, like cotton. 3. Eat regularly, but watch salt intake. 4. Avoid alcohol which can be dehydrating. 5. Try to stay indoors during peak temperatures. 6. Studies have shown that a cool bath or shower is more effective for cooling down than a fan, so take advantage of your tub! 7. If the home is too warm, consider a visit to the mall or library. 8. Respiratory or other chronic illnesses may be aggravated by warm weather, so pay special attention to them. 9. Some medications can interfere with sweating and react with sunlight, so check with your doctor. 10. Check on any elderly neighbors and make sure their home is cool enough. Eating to beat a silent killer DASH for lower blood pressure! What is DASH? (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension). Everyone knows to limit salt and avoid processed salty foods to control your blood pressure. Nearly 1/3 of the people with high blood pressure, don’t know it! Eating right is one way to keep high blood pressure in check. Besides limiting fat and sodium, eating more fruits and vegetables and getting more fiver, and low fat dairy foods is key. Avoiding the salt shaker isn’t enough. Other ways to lower sodium: Always take prescribed blood pressure medication as directed by your doctor, even if its normal and you’re feeling well. Understanding Alzheimer’s behavior A person with Alzheimer ’s disease may sometimes act in ways that are upsetting or seem aggressive. He or she may hit, scratch, or fight with the caregiver. This does not always happen. But if it does, it is likely to be when the person is in the middle stage of Alzheimer ’s disease. This stage can last for up to four years. These actions can be upsetting and are often hard for caregivers to manage. It helps to have a plan. One that many people find easy to remember is called ABC. Here is what this means: A means Antecedent. This refers to events that happen just before an upsetting action. B is the Behavior. This means any upsetting or aggressive action done by the person who has Alzheimer ’s disease. C refers to the Consequence. This includes events that happen after the behavior. Sometimes, these events can make the situation worse. A person with Alzheimer ’s disease cannot be rushed. Rushing usually leads to behavioral problems that can be avoided.
