fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — The Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce is searching for a new executive director. Barb Brassard will leave the post Aug. 31 to become volunteer coordinator of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Essex County. She starts work at the Port Henry-based RSVP Sept. 1. “It’s an opportunity I couldn’t pass Barb Brassard up to work close to home and be part of a county-wide program,” said Brassard, who lives in Moriah. The Ti chamber is now advertising the position. “I’m sorry to leave here,” said Brassard, who has been chamber director for a year. “I plan to continue to work with the chamber. I’ll be here through the transition and I hope to partner with the chamber on future projects.”

Joan Pulling and Jerry Cooper discuss an exhibit at the Ticonderoga Arts gallery located in the lower level of the Hancock House. The gallery moved to the Hancock House this year after two seasons on Montcalm Street. By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — Local artists are enjoying their new home in Ticonderoga. After two years on Montcalm Street, Ticonderoga Arts has moved its gallery to the lower level of the Hancock House. “It’s really a beautiful room; a perfect space for our gallery,” Jerry Cooper, chairman of Ticonderoga Arts, said. “It’s working out great.”
The gallery is handicap accessible and can be reached directly from the Hancock House parking lot or through the upstairs museum. It is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May through December. The gallery currently exhibits the work of about a dozen local artists — painters, photographers, potters, woodworkers and others. “We’re always looking for new artists,” Cooper said. “We need
watercolors. That’s an important art form in this area.” Most of the artists are members of Ticonderoga Arts, although non-members are allowed to exhibit one piece. Membership rates are $15 for students, $25 for people age 60 and older, $35 for individuals and $40 for families annually. All the work is for sale, except for the Memorial Exhibit. That is a collection of work by the late Art Secor and Helen Potter.

story of a girl who comes face-to-face with the mythical beast of Lake Champlain. The alleged Lake Champlain creature, “Champ,” has been seen near Port Henry for hundreds of years. Crypto-zoologists think the creature may be a plesiosaur, a large under water reptile not seen since prehistoric times. Champlain sighted “Champ” in July 1609 and described the creature as a “20 foot serpent thick as a barrel with a head like a horse.” Some believe that “Champ” is a large lake sturgeon. In 1977, Sandra Mansi photographed “Champ” while she was having a picnic with friends. This

They will spend Aug. 9 touring local attractions and stay a second night before leaving Aug. 10 for Plattsburgh. A “cyclist village” will be set up at Ticonderoga Middle School with a “bistro” across the street. The village will accommodate bikers who want to camp — others will stay in local hotels — and serve as abase of operations in Ticonderoga. The school will provide its kitchen, cafeteria and showers. Velo Quebec Voyages will pay all expenses associated with its use of the school. The village will also feature local vendors selling items such as fresh fruit, ice cream, hot dogs and corn on the cob. “The Velo people were here last week for a walkthrough,” said Brassard, who is also co-chair of the local Velo organizing committee. “They seemed pleased.”
Velo Quebec operates 60 tours a year on several continents. Their 2010 tours include two-wheeled trips in Europe, North America,

Mother seeks justice in daughter’s death To the Times of Ti: Prescription drug abuse is a major and critical situation across the country. Because of the illegal trade and illicit sales of medications, it has caused a dangerous situation to younger adults and teenagers of our community, here in Essex County. I only know too well, this danger. Loosing a child is the most unbearable pain any parent could go through, especially if it has resulted from the drug users and abusers of the community who care nothing for their victims. On Feb. 13, 2010, my daughter, Jennifer Lynn Smith of Moriah, died from an accidental overdose of a very lethal prescription drug that was not prescribed to her. Her life ended in tragedy. There are too many drug users and abusers out there that would rather make money by selling, stealing and trading prescription drugs for the sake of endangering and enabling others with their drug habits. Endangering the lives of innocent young adults. Unfortunately it has resulted in deaths in our community just this year alone, not only my daughter, but there has been a few more. Jennifer Lynn’s death was said to be an accident overdose and at the moment is still left unsolved as to who gave her the drugs that killed her. No one will come forth, in fear of getting busted for drugs. As it stands, its a cold
case. My daughter fell victim to the hands of a druggie? I don’t think so. I will stand firm and I will not talk lightly. My daughter ’s death will not go unheard. Jennifer Lynn paid the consequences for the ones who poisoned her. Druggies only care for themselves, not the human beings that they take the lives away from so many innocent victims guilty conscience whatsoever. It is the families of the deceased that carry the pain of loosing their loved ones for the rest of their lives. As a parent, and as a mother, who loved her daughter unconditionally, I stand in this community and speak out for justice for my daughter an all the others who have died! I want justice in hoping to find the drug dealers and pill pushers who took her life away, with hopes of locking everyone up who was involved, so that the young adults of our society and young teenagers can be out of harm’s way. Everybody wants to blame someone for the death of my daughter, and no one will speak the truth. As far as I can see it, they are all guilty. I hope you live with the conscience of knowing you killed a precious human being, and someday you will be caught and justice will prevail. Parents, please teach your children about the dangers of prescription drugs. I will not speak lightly on this subject and I am out-

Penfield delightful We recently stopped by the Penfield Homestead Museum and were blown away by the building, collections, uniqueness and engaging and informed manner of the tour guide, the museum’s board president and town historian Joan Hunsdon. If you showed up at the White House and got a tour by the First Lady it couldn’t have been more delightful and interesting. But it was way more surprising, because who’d expect so much of such interest in a place that, no doubt, is not as well-known as it ought to be. There are thousands of house museums in America. Most are small and poor. But they do a job as important to the health and well-being of our society as the Smithsonian, by preserving unique things of immediate value and relevance to a real locale and community. I hope the Crown Point schools bend over backwards to avail themselves of this treasure; that the community supports it and that you take it from a local history buff who has visited 100s of small museums that you have one of the best anywhere and in Joan Hunsdon, a champion and friend who gives it the love and attention it needs to realize its potential. It’s a place I hope ever resident knows and goes out of their way to introduce to visiting friends and family. It’s worth it.
raged! The Essex County Drug Task Force is doing a wonderful job on cracking down on the sales of narcotics and prescription drugs in our community, and I ask you why? Because it took the death of my daughter, Jennifer Lynn and others to wake up the eyes of law enforcement to pursue the crackdown of drugs in our community. Jennifer ’s death should not be in vain and the laws should be handed down with the strictest and toughest sentencing. Deaths as a result of drugs should be cased as manslaughter. So many people across the country took my daughter ’s story to heart, and we all stand together on justice! So I ask, as Jennifer Lynn’s mother, to seek out justice for her, that she well deserves. She was a human being, a sister, a daughter, a friend who was loved by so many! And if we stand together in this community we can fight the drug abuse and maybe one more life could be saved. Rest in peace Jennifer Lynn. You will be missed by all who knew you and by all who have been touched by your family, your life and your story.
Stay safe in heat To the Times of Ti: At this writing, with the exception of a few thunderstorms, we are experiencing one of the longest and earliest heat spells in recent years, which cautions us to care for our young and old in all the usual manners. Lots of fluids, lots of sun tan lotion and only short periods of sun exposure mid day are the most obvious. It also helps to limit workouts to morning and evening when possible. Be sure to mark your calendar for our ever popular annual steak roast to be held on Aug. 7, starting at 3 p.m. It will include the usual choice steaks, corn, cole slaw, rolls and dessert. Hot dogs, hamburgers, clams, beer and soda also available. There will be raffles, a white elephant sale and D.J. Tom for your enjoyment. Part of the proceeds this year will go to help our loyal firefighter Bob Rafferty with expenses which he incurred during a recent illness and hospital-
ization. Come and support the efforts of your dedicated Hague firemen and women. The above event will be immediately preceded by the annual Silver Bay Emps Musical Nunsense on Aug.57, with all proceeds from the opening night show contributed to our fire department. Admission is adults $8, kids$4. We appreciate such effort and generosity. Recently there were solar panels installed on our building and there is a fiveyear plan toward becoming an eco-friendly building. Our ambulance and emergency vehicle are now equipped with low band frequency radios integrated with the county system. In June there were six fire calls and three ambulance calls using a total of 105 man hours. Keep cool! Joe McCranels Information Officer Hague Volunteer Fire Department
Chris Gibson, who is the Republican candidate for Congress in the 20th District, recently visited Ticonderoga. He was introduced to our town Supervisor Deb Malaney and Chief of Police Mark Johns in addition to some of our concerned citizens. I, for one, came away with a deeper respect for Mr. Gibson beyond his biography. He was all ears when it came to listening to our concerns about jobs in the region, about more effective energy uses, and finding less costly cures for health care. Mr. Gibson’s approach to obstacles and fixes was evident while he played high school basketball. He was a point guard who had to command the entire court. He had to put his teammates in the right places to succeed and win. Chris Gibson still carries that attitude today. He’s the right man for this mission, and he will put our country in the best position to succeed and win. John P. Sharkey Ticonderoga
A good move To the Times of Ti: In July 2009 my husband and I moved to Schroon Lake from Washington state (near Seattle). We left our jobs and our friends, sold our house and bought the Schroon Lake Bed and Breakfast. (We had to find Schroon Lake on the map first!) It was a leap of faith in a crummy economy, but it has been our best leap ever. I wanted to publicly thank the people and the town of Schroon Lake for all of the support and welcoming hospitality we have experienced since moving here. As we near our business’ one year anniversary in early August, we are grateful for our new friendships and look forward to deepening our ties with this wonderful community. Ticonderoga searching for bidders on heat project
Teacher hopes to attract mental_floss to Ticonderoga By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — mental_floss is hitting the road and a local teachers thinks the intellectual group should visit Ticonderoga. “I think this could be a great boone for our burgh,” said Amy Crannell, a Ti High English teacher. “Mental_floss is a long time favorite of mine — lots of great trivia — and the kids at school love to tackle the quizzes when we have time.” mental_floss is scheduling its national tour through a contest. Fans are being asked to Email the troupe. Tour stops will be based on the number of Emails from each community. Crannell hopes Ticonderoga residents will Email mental_floss and invite it to town. She’s contacting local officials and organizing an Email campaign. “If you think mental_floss should bring our traveling circus to your town, e-mail us at comeflosswithme@mentalfloss.com and put your town’s name in the subject line (it makes it a lot easier for us to tally votes),” according to a

The Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Essex County uses senior citizens to provide services to nonprofit organizations. RSVP’s most recent statistics show 472 enrolled volunteers logged 62,009 hours of service at 95 stations within Essex County in 2008. It has been calculated the econom-

There will be flossy prizes involved for all those who help.” mental_floss is a bi-monthly American magazine, launched in 2001 in Birmingham, Ala., that presents facts and trivia in a humorous way. MentalFloss.com is also host to a popular blog, which contains additional trivia, features and news articles. The company now has additional offices in Brooklyn, New York and Chesterland, Ohio, and the magazine has a circulation of more than 100,000 subscribers in over 17 countries. The publication also has been included in Inc. magazine's list of the 5,000 fastest growing private companies. The magazine frequently publishes books and sells T-shirts with humorous sayings. By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — It could be a cold winter at the Ticonderoga Community Building. The building, which is home to most town offices, needs a new heating system — and no one seems willing to install one at a reasonable cost. The town board is again seeking bids on the project to upgrade its 1940 steam boiler. It’s the third time bids are being sought. Supervisor Deb Malaney said the town engineer has estimated the project to cost about $100,000. The first request for bids attracted two interested contractors — both with prices in excess of $200,000. “That was just too much,” Malaney said. “We rejected those bids and decided to try again.” A second request for bids got no response. “Not one bid,” Malaney said, “so we’ll go to bid for a third time.” And what if no one bids this time? The town board will cross that bridge when the time comes, hoping the third attempt at improving its heating system is successful.

ic impact of RSVP’s volunteer work is more than $19 million. McCaughin announced her retirement last year and was honored at the annual RSVP luncheon last October. “I would like to thank each and every volunteer that has so generously donated their time throughout the years to make RSVP such a successful program,” McCaughin said.

For all of those missing their Dads, & for my siblings & myself.....Thanks Dad for always being there. There are so many “Men” who take fatherhood lightly They either run away before their child is born, Sometimes shortly thereafter, Sometimes when a toddler, sometimes grade school, Sometimes College. At any point a “child” is hurt, Their life deeply affected, Their Father left when they became an inconvenience, A nuisance, a monetary drain, just too much for “the Man.” Thanks Dad, for being a real true Dad, From my birth to your death & beyond A man of integrity, high moral value & commitment, and thank you to all Dads who take the responsibility of human life as seriously as they should. Airport renovations complete By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — The refurbished Ticonderoga airport is open for business. A grand opening ceremony July 27 marked the completion of a five-year, $3.2 million renovation project at the facility located off Shore Airport Road. “It’s been a lot of work, but well worth it,” said Steve Whitford, Ti trustee and chairman of the town airport committee. “I have high hopes for the airport.” The project leveled and repaved the runway, created a turning area for planes, erected security fencing, installed new wind socks and runway lights, and moved utility lines to allow for future expansion. The $8 million for the project came from the Federal Aviation Administration and cost taxpayers nothing, Whitford stressed. “People say if the money
Guidelines issued for lake boaters TICONDEROGA — In light of recent tragic boating accidents on Lake George, the Lake George Association has compiled a list of 12 key tips for boating safety. In recent years, Lake George has seen a dramatic increase in the use of small craft — canoes, kayaks, small sailboats and personal watercraft. When boating on Lake George, or any large body of water with multi-use traffic, boaters are advised to follow these tips to protect their safety, and the safety of others using the Lake. The top four causes of boating accidents in New York State are submerged objects, wakes, weather and operator inattention. The tips are: GET a PROPER EDUCATION. Before operating a motorboat, everyone should take a boating safety course. KNOW the LOCATION of SUBMERGED OBJECTS. Watch for and understand navigational markers. Carry a chart or

a lot of money by providing fuel,” Whitford said. The cost of an automated fuel service will be upwards of $500,000. That money, too, will come from the FAA, Whitford said. “There will be no tax dollars spent at the airport,” he stressed. Whitford is also hoping to attract a delivery deport — like UPS or FedEx — to the airport. He noted the nearest delivery depots are now in Burlington and Albany. The recently-completed work at the Ti airport puts it in a position to handle more planes and to solicit more business, he said. “I have high hopes for that airport,” Whitford said. “I think we can build it into something special.” Ti Supervisor Deb Malaney agrees. “I think the airport is a real asset to our local economy,” she said. “Steve’s done a lot there and I think we can do even more.”

Steve Whitford comes from the federal government it’s still tax money,” he said. “In this case, that’s not true.” A portion of every airline ticket sold in the U.S. goes to the FAA for airport rehabilitation, Whitford explained. It’s the flying public that paid for the Ti project. The Ticonderoga airport handles 11,000 landings and take-offs a year, according to the FAA. “A lot of people think there’s only a plane a day or
a week that uses the airport,” he said. “There are planes in and out of there all day.” The town budget includes $20,000 annually for airport support, but Whitford believes the facility will be self-sustaining within a year. A hanger at the airport is now leased and plans call for the town to start charging for plane tie-downs in the near future. “My goal is to make that airport totally tax free,” Whitford said. “We’re close now. I think the tie-down fee will generate enough money (to cover airport expenses).” Work at the local airport may not be finished. Whitford hopes to install an automated fuel service for planes. He explained there are few airports in the area with fuel and most of those charge planes a fee for landing and fueling. Ti, he said, would charge only for the fuel, making it an attractive option for flyers. “I think we could generate

map of the lake. PAY ATTENTION to WAKES. Know how to navigate them, and be responsible for those you create. Be WEATHER WISE. Always check the weather first. Due to the high mountains surrounding Lake George, boaters cannot always see storms coming. Before setting out, check the radar at http://forecast.weather.gov VISION is KEY. Motorboat operators should look over the top of the windshield — not through it. Keep the bow of the boat low to see clearly ahead. Assign a designated lookout to keep an eye out for other boaters, objects, especially small craft and swimmers. NO DRUGS or ALCOHOL. Never use drugs or alcohol before or during boat operation. BUY a COMFY lightweight PFD (personal floatation device). Too often PFDs are left behind or not worn because they are uncomfortable, especially by paddlers. Motorboats: THINK CENTER. Paddlers: THINK EDGES. Motorboats on Lake George can enjoy considerably more elbow-room when they travel in the center of the lake. Paddlers should cruise close to shore whenever possible. BRIGHT COLORS for Paddlers. Place a KAYAK SAFETY FLAG (similar to a bike flag) on your vessel. Purchase a hat and PFD with contrasting day-glow colors. Use reflective tape on your paddles. Be ready to SIGNAL using a handheld HORN. Paddlers and small sailboats can carry an electronic handheld signaling device or a horn with compressed air . COMMUNICATE. Always let someone on shore know where you are going and when you’ll be back. Keep an old, discarded cell phone on board your boat to call 911. KNOW and FOLLOW the RULES of the ROAD. Motorized craft must give right of way to non-motorized craft, and boats being passed have the right of way. The speed limit on Lake George is 45 mph from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., 25 mph from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. and 5 mph in no wake zones and within 100 feet of docks, moorings, anchored vessels and shore (500 feet for PWCs).

The gallery opened with a reception held in conjunction with the Hancock House in May. Attendance has been building throughout the summer. “We’re getting more traffic,” Cooper said. “It was pretty slow, but it’s picking up as people realize we’re here.” In June the gallery hosted a reception for
student artists from Ticonderoga Elementary School that attracted about 80 people. “We’d like to do more projects with the school,” Cooper said. “We’ve talked to the art teachers and they’re very receptive.” Having a gallery in Ticonderoga is a great asset to local artists, Pulling said. “I love having a gallery here,” she said. “I’m local and it makes my life so much easier. “I tried to exhibit in Glens Falls in the (19)80s and was told I lived too far away for membership,” Pulling added. “So, I went to a gallery in Essex, an hour away. “To have my work here in Ticonderoga May to December at such a small cost is wonderful,” she said. Besides artists, the gallery is also in need of volunteers to work while it’s open. “We’re always looking for artists and volunteers,” Cooper said. “We depend greatly on our volunteers.”

and the Ti Festival Guild.” Burdick’s wife, Cathie, is executive director of the Ticonderoga Festival Guild, which brings arts programs to the community each summer. Burdick established his cartoon museum 12 years ago in Hague. He moved it to Ticonderoga six years ago. More than 3,000 people have toured the museum in the in the basement of the Ticonderoga Community Building. “It’s been very rewarding,” Burdick said. Valued at more than $100,000, the local collection will become the Burdick Gallery at the ToonSeum, according to Joe Wos, executive director of the Pittsburgh facility. “Some people have suggested I sell pieces on Ebay, but I didn’t want to break up the collection,” Burdick said. “I want it to have its own identity as a cartoon museum.” Wos said the Pittsburgh museum is grateful to receive the collection. “It is a great honor to be selected to preserve the remarkable cartoon legacy of Stan and Cathie Burdick,” Wos said. “We have a common mis-
sion and vision, and look forward to sharing this art with the public for decades to come.” The Ticonderoga Cartoon Museum is open Friday 1-4 p.m. and by appointment by calling Burdick at 5857015. It will close for good Aug. 31. “People have heard we’re closing and want to see the collection; last Friday we had more than 30 people,” Burdick said. “I urge people to see it while they have a chance.” Besides the collection, the Ticonderoga Cartoon Museum has offered special programs, including group cartoon classes, visiting cartoonist guest days, daytime school visits, and “We’ll Bring the Museum to You” events when Burdick takes parts of the collection into the community. Burdick plans to remain in Ticonderoga, although he plans to visit Pittsburgh and the ToonSeum to see his collection. “I definitely want to see how it looks,” he said. Located in downtown Pittsburgh’s cultural district, the ToonSeum works to promote a deeper appreciation of the cartoonists and their work through hands-on workshops, community outreach, cartoon-oriented educational programming and exhibitions or original cartoon art.

CROWN POINT • TIMES OF TI - 13
Champlain Bridge project to use union labor By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — The construction of a new Lake Champlain Bridge in Crown Point will be a union project after all. Even though New York and Vermont rejected a project labor agreement (PLA) on the new bridge construction, Flat-
iron Construction Inc., recently signed a private PLA. Flatiron, based in Colorado, was awarded the bridge contract for $69.9 million. Because the construction of the bridge is fast-paced and highly technical, Flatiron spokeswoman Christie DeLuca said, the company wants to make sure it hires qualified workers. “The bridge also incorporates a unique design. The main stand is a technically challenging tied-arch center, which requires specific qualifications to perform the work. So flatiron signed a PLA so the unions would help assist them in finding employees that have the necessary experience for that highly technical work,” she said. Workers must apply for jobs through the union hiring halls, DeLuca said, but that does not mean they are required to be a union member. “The way it works is local people go to the union halls to put in their application and the union halls are then required to refer any applicants that are qualified. They (applicants) don’t necessarily need to be union and they are not required

to join the union, but they will have the option to,” she said. Non-union workers will still have to pay union dues because the union is still required to represent them, but DeLuca said the dues are less then they would be for a union member. The PLA does not change the worker wages, DeLuca said. Every worker will still be paid the prevailing wage rate established by the Department of Labor and the state of New York. Crown Point Supervisor Bethany Kosmider said she has met with Flatiron and state Department of Labor officials about the PLA. “The bridge is a highly-technical bridge and we do need highly-trained and skilled workers for it,” Kosmider said. “The problem lies with the statement made by Flatiron months ago when they said they would be hiring local labor. According to John Grady, (state Department of Transportation) Region 1 engineer, they should have said, and meant to say, local ‘union’ labor. “Flatiron did say they would be hiring common laborers, about 20, but they would not be working steady,” she added. “It would be on a as-needed basis.” Kosmider said she’s disappointed more local people won’t be working on the bridge, but reaffirmed her commitment to creating local jobs. “As supervisors, we need to find ways of creating permanent employment for the constituents of our area,” she said. “Bringing business to our area is tough with all the restrictions, but it is something we have to work together on.”

Police identify driver in fatal Moriah accident State police have identified the driver of a car who struck and killed a Moriah man. Mandy L. Lebeau, 20, of Middlebury, Vt., was the driver who ran over Joshua D. Novak, 31, of Port Henry on Dugway Road around 4 a.m. July 18. Police said the Troop B Collision Reconstruction Unit has positively identified Lebeau’s 2004 Dodge Intrepid as the vehicle that struck Novak. Novak was pronounced dead at the accident site by Essex County Coroner Walter S. Martin III. No charges have been filed. The investigation continues. Novak was walking home from a bar in Elizabethtown when he apparently laid down in the road in the Deckers Flats section of Moriah. He was then struck by a passing auto and suffered fatal head injuries, as well as leg and back injuries. Lebeau told police she hit something in the roadway while driving through Deckers Flats en route to her boyfriend’s residence on Wasson Street in Moriah’s Witherbee hamlet. She kept driving, then returned to find another motorist had
PoliceReport already called 911 after finding Novak in the southbound lane of Dugway Road. Ti teens arrested Two teens are accused of breaking into Ticonderoga High School and stealing computers. Cody J. Taylor, 18, and a 15-year-old boy, both from Ticonderoga, have been charged with third-degree burglary and third-degree grand larceny, according to Ticonderoga town police. The charges allege the two teens broke into Ticonderoga High School July 7 and stole laptop computers. Taylor was arraigned in Ticonderoga town court and sent to Essex County Jail with bail set at $2,500 cash or $5,000 bond. The 15-year-old boy’s case will be adjudicated through Essex County Family Court.
Ti man convicted A Ticonderoga man has been convicted of abusing a 10year-old child. Richard Monroe Jr., 55, was convicted in Essex County Court on one count of felony first-degree course of sexual conduct against a child. The defendant was originally indicted on five counts of sexual misconduct, but Judge Richard Meyer dismissed four of those, leaving only the course of sexual conduct against a child for trial. Meyer set sentencing for Sept. 16. Monroe faces a minimum sentence of five years and a maximum of 25 years in state prison. Meyer sent Monroe to the Essex County Jail to await sentencing, and granted an order of protection for the girl and her family. Monroe had been free on bail. Monroe was indicted for subjecting a female child to a course of sexual conduct over a 14-month period beginning when she was 10 years old. The defendant was the boyfriend of the child’s mother.

2-1-1 program’s future uncertain By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The future of a regional 2-1-1 telephone information system is now in question. John C. Bernardi, executive director of the United Way of the Adirondack Region, said funding for the system — which has been serving Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties since July 1, 2009 — officially ran out following the one-year anniversary of its establishment. However, the Hudson Valley region call center that operates the system is working with the local United Way — which serves as the coordinating entity for the system — to keep the program running until funding is secured. “We are okay until the end of August because we’ve negotiated a continuation with
D
the call center through then,” said Bernardi, who serves as chairman of a steering committee established to oversee the system. “Beyond that, the future is uncertain.” “We’re operating on fumes,” added Bernardi. “[The call center] has been very reasonable. They want to obviously keep us up and running, but we’re running on fumes.” The annual operating cost of the system is approximately $85,000 — a fraction of the estimated $350,000-$500,000 cost the United Way steering committee found it would take to establish and operate a new call center in the tri-county region. The cost of planning and developing the system was funded by a combination of local in-kind resources and through 2-1-1 New York, the organization which facilitates the implementation of 2-1-1 systems. The over-
&
all cost to operate the system was funded through a combination of public-private partnerships such as the United Way, major gifts and endowments and state funding. However, state funding “is not showing any promise of being reinstated anytime soon,” said Bernardi. “We’re sort of at a crossroads now with the program,” said Bernardi, who added the steering committee is currently working to identify ways to sustain the program. “We’re looking at some contractual opportunities and some other sources of revenue that we can utilize to sustain the program. Although we don’t have anything concrete at this point.” One suggestion has been to propose the state consolidate toll-free hotline numbers it operates and use that money to fund 2-1-1 services statewide.

“It doesn’t look promising, but there are efforts under way to convince the state that they’re wasting a lot of money on toll-free numbers when they ought to be investing in 2-1-1,” said Bernardi. According to information compiled for the United Way, the regional 2-1-1 system handled 293 calls from its inception through May 31. Of those calls, referrals were made to 340 providers of health and human services such as mental health counseling, legal services, and providers of basic necessities such as food, clothing and shelter. Bernardi said he anticipates the number of those who utilize the system to increase if the program continues. “We think the first year it’s been underutilized but we also recognize that it takes time for this to become familiar to people,” he said. “We really anticipate year two to be year of great growth ... that’s why we fear having to end the program.”

Empire State Games
Ticonderoga athletes capture gold medals Thorne wins track titles; Cooper tops archery field By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — Walt Thorne continues to defy age. The Ticonderoga High School track coach won the gold medal in the master ’s division 400-meter run during track and field competition at the Empire State Games in Buffalo July 24. The 69-year-old Thorne was clocked in 1 minute, 6.9 seconds. That time not only gave him the gold medal, but makes him one of very few runners in the world to run 400 meters faster than his age — 66.9 seconds at 69 years old. “The goal is always to beat my age,” Thorne said. “I did that by two seconds. If not for the wind, I probably would have done it by four seconds.” Thorne also won a gold medal in the 4x100-meter relay and took silver medals in Walt Thorne of Ticonderoga won two the 100 and 200-meter golds and two silver medals at the sprints. The winner in Empire State Games in Buffalo. the 100 and 200 is four years younger than Thorne, who will turn age 70 on Aug. 6. “I was pleased with the meet,” he said. “I made some new friends and had some decent competition. It was a good experience.” Earlier in the competition, Thorne took a silver medal in the 100-meter dash. His time was 15.37 seconds.
Ticonderoga was well represented at this weekend’s Empire State Games. Six local athletes competed in the Olympic-style event in Buffalo. Jon Granger of Putnam, a Ticonderoga High School athlete, won a bronze medal in the scholastic boys long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 3/4 inches and took a silver medal in the 4x100 scholastic relay. Brothers Devin and Dustin Scott battled in the open division high jump during track and field competition. The former Ticonderoga High School athletes are now students at SUNY-Plattsburgh. Dustin took fourth place, while Devin finished fifth in the Empire Games competition. Thorne coached Granger and the Scott brothers at Ti High. “I’m very pleased they did well,” Thorne said. “It’s a good feeling to see your athletes test themselves.” Marc Cooper of Ticonderoga won a gold medal in the masters division composite all-around archery event. Jim Cunningham of Ti rode in the masters division of the cycling road race. Cunningham took fourth place in the 10kilometer master ’s time trial with a time of 27:15.33. Cunningham is an Empire State Games veteran, having won medals in canoeing. This is his first attempt at cycling. This summer ’s event marked a return for the Empire State Games. It took a hiatus in 2009 for the first time after the state cut funding. Thorne said the year off hurt the games. Participation was dramatically down from past years, he said. “We probably had 60 competitors in all of track and field, all the age groups, men and women,” Thorne said. “We didn’t have to run a single semi (preliminary heat). All the races were finals, even the relays. The women’s 400 only had one runner.” That didn’t stop the athletes who did attend from enjoying the experience. Athletes marched into the stadium for the opening ceremonies at the University at Buffalo Stadium and had an Olympic-style weekend. The torch, representing the beginning of the games, was lit to lively cheers from the athletes on the field and an estimated 15,000 spectators in the stands. First Niagara Financial Group donated $500,000 to help bring the Empire State Games back, and a coalition of other business and individuals raised an additional $600,000, according to the New York State Office of Parks & Recreation, whose offices oversee the program.

Athletes to challenge train on annual road race By Lindsay Yandon lindsay@denpubs.com NORTH CREEK — Runners from across the region will gather in North Creek Saturday, Aug. 7 for the ninth annual Race the Train to benefit Johnsburg Dollars for Scholars. Since its inception, Race the Train has drawn hundreds of runners and their families to the village of North Creek for an 8.4 mile run along the route of the Upper Hudson River Railroad train from Riparius to the North Creek station. Registration is taking place online at www.active.com and www.adirondackrunners.com until Aug. 4. Advance registration is recommended, but will continue on race day. “It is never to late to register for Race the Train,” said codirector Ann Arsenault. “We want everyone with interest in running to have a chance.” A registration party will be hosted at the North Creek station Aug. 6, 5 to 7:30 p.m. and registration will also be available before the race from 7 to 7:45 a.m., Aug. 7. The train will depart the North Creek station at 8 a.m. to bring runners and spectators to Riparius where the train will return and the runners will follow the same route. Awards, refreshments and raffles will take place in North Creek after the race.
All are welcome to attend a pre-race pasta dinner hosted by Marsha’s Restaurant on Main Street in North Creek. Takeouts are available at 4:30 p.m. and dinner will be served from 5 - 7 p.m. Dinner tickets are required and are available at Marsha’s Restaurant as well as North Creek Community Bank. With 324 runners already entered and many expected spectators, local businesses will see a growth in business the day of the race. “Businesses certainly benefit from the race, but the race also benefits greatly from the support of businesses,” said Arsenault. “This is not just a race, but a community and family event.” A one-mile family fun run will be held on Main Street in North Creek after the main race. The cost is $5 to run and children as well as adults are welcome to enter. This family attraction is what makes Race the Train so much more than just a race, according to Arsenault. Registration is up by 45 runners from last year ’s race already and Arsenault is encouraged by the interest. Dollars for Scholars was able to raise $16,000 before expenses last year and used the money for scholarship. More information can be found online at the registration Web sites or by calling 251-2602.

Post traumatic stress disorder Are you caring for someone with post traumatic stress disorder? If the answer is “yes,” then you already realize how stressful this can be for caregivers as well as care receivers. Several studies have focused on caregiver burden and PTSD, and the findings show a strong correlation between the severity of PTSD and caregiver burden. The nature of the PTSD may make the caregiver feel like they are the only person capable of providing care. Caregivers need to understand symptoms of PTSD, as well as where they come from. Caregivers must also make time for themselves to do things that they enjoy, even for a few minutes a day or week. Individual and group therapy may greatly benefit caregivers, and support groups are another great way for caregivers to alleviate their stress and re-charge batteries so that they can continue to provide care to their loved ones. (Taken from Caregivers’ Corner)
How and when to eat fruit What is the CORRECT way to eat fruit? IT MEANS NOT EATING FRUIT AFTER A MEAL!! FRUIT SHOULD BE EATEN ON AN EMPTY STOMACH. Eating fruit the correct way plays a major role in detoxifying your system, supplying you with a great deal of energy for weight loss and other life activities. Let’s say you eat two slices of bread, then a slice of fruit. The slice of fruit is ready to go straight through the stomach into the intestines, but it’s prevented from doing so. Fruit mixes with the food and produces gas. Hence, you bloat!!
