TICONDEROGA — When Joyce Cooper sees children on the new playground equipment in Bicentennial Park, she smiles — not just because youngsters are having fun. “That playground is the result of a true community effort,” Cooper said. “It shows the way people can come together in Ticonderoga.” The Ticonderoga Kiwanis with help from the town highway department, local businesses and others erected new playground equipment in the park this summer. Kiwanis installed the original playground in the back in 1980 and decided to update some of the equipment. The new playground pieces cost $1,500. “It’s a very popular park, particularly with under-schoolage kids,” said Cooper, Kiwanis vice president. “We want to maintain the park for those children and their families.” But what started out as a Kiwanis project quickly expanded. “We realized it would be a monumental undertaking for the Kiwanis to complete the work,” Cooper said. “It was a lot more involved than we first realized.” So Kiwanians contacted local contractor Ed Nolan for help. He then reached out to the Ticonderoga Highway Department. During the installation, as parts were needed, Aubuchon Hardware and ProBuild offered assistance. “The Kiwanis decided on the placement and helped with some minor work, but Ed (Nolan) and the town crew really took over,” Cooper said. “They were all fantastic. The job was completed in one morning.” Working with Nolan were Ti Highway Superintendent Pat Morrison and crewmen Farley Ezzo, Tim Huestis, Dick Av-

Ti seniors complete projects TICONDEROGA — People driving by Ticonderoga High School June 12 may have noticed a few things out of the ordinary. A horse on the football field, a windmill in the parking lot, a motorcycle display on the tennis court, cars on the front sidewalk, one of several dogs sitting and rolling over on command on the front lawn, model airplanes buzzing the heads of people, or the ambulance pulled up to the side door? Rest assured things were just as they should have been. It was Senior Project Day. Completion of a senior project has been a requirement for graduation from Ticonderoga High School since 1989. The project consists of a research paper, a minimum of 20 hours of “hands-on” work related to their topic and a presentation of the project to a panel comprised of school personnel, former students and community members. Students choose the topics for their projects and must submit a formal proposal at the beginning of the process. Students then choose a mentor to guide them throughout the project. Students are encouraged to choose topics that they have a strong desire to learn more about; and that will challenge them to develop new skills and talents. “We would like to thank all the mentors, and community members who were part of this year ’s senior projects,” said adviser Kimberly Powers. “Without your participation the senior project would not be possible.”

6 - TIMES OF TI • OPINION

Trust the people The Times of Ti: While driving alone on my way to my home in Dresden, I traveled through an area called Steventown, east of Albany, and I realized as I passed the cemetery of the Evergreens that the grave of Samuel J. Tilden was there. Samuel Tilden said, “I will always trust the people,” even after he lost the presidency by one electoral vote. I look forward to the day when we can say that we the people will always trust the government. Unfortunately today, the government fools all of the people all of the time. The ability to easily fool people was demonstrated on TV last month by an interview with a young woman (about 30 years young) in reference to “Catch me if you can.” I was intrigued during the interview by my belief that if 5,000 randomly chosen people were asked to indicate which one in a group of five women was the convicted felon, not a single one of the 5,000 would get it right. Those that have tried to find her have said “she is good” but not one has said “she is extremely intelligent.” She is that good and although she is a nice looking girl, she doesn’t look that good! The rest of the story will begin in 2011 and yet even now it is puzzling as to why an extremely and articulate young girl, with no record of losing, chose to be a high school dropout. When asked why she stole a number of people’s identity I heard her mention the word “survival.” Even more puzzling is her good standing as a student at Harvard University and Columbia Law school. We only know that she was caught by accident and not by any man. Also, and on a different subject, it is my contention that President Barack Obama should take the responsibility for the Air Force One fly-over New York City. Stiling Knight Huletts Landing

A special thank you to Kevin McKee and Dolly Photography for making all of our beautiful sponsor signs – truly a work of art. Thank you too to those who donated anonymously and please forgive us if we have forgotten anyone. “It is not how these officers died that made them heroes, it is how they lived.” Respect, honor, but most importantly, remember… Sgt. To the Times of Ti: The Sgt. Eric Loiselle Memorial Scholarship Fund held a golf tournament July 11 at the Schroon lake Golf Course to replenish monies awarded to graduating Essex County seniors pursuing further education in criminal justice. To date, this fund in conjunction with the Essex County Officer ’s benevolent fund have awarded over 90 scholarships totaling over $30,000. Most recently, five awards were made in June for $1,000 each. We would like to take this opportunity to extend our appreciation to Schroon Lake Golf Course for their unmatched hospitality and assistance for the event, the players that came out and had a great time, the behind the scenes people that put in so much effort to make this a success and most importantly the sponsors, without whom we would not have the means to make this a success. A huge thank you to our sponsors for your continuing support: Ticonderoga Country Club, Christopher Chevrolet, ARC The Old Mine, Sunsation, Boyea’s Grocery, Mineville Oil, Moriah Country Club, Leroy’s Garage, Two Brothers Meat Market, Cobble Hill Golf Course, Cobble Hill Inn, Barb and Brad Paye, Adirondack Digital Imaging, AuSable Chasm Carriage House, Willsboro Golf Course. Mr. President, please resign To the Times of Ti: Dear Mr. President, For the sake of the country I am going to be bold enough to say, “Please resign from the office of the U.S. Presidency...please just resign.” All of the policies, executive orders and legislation that we've heard about in recent months are causing alarm and doomsday scenarios for this country. I can’t be any more blunt. Things are not going to improve under your administration, things will only spiral downward. Do you wonder why? Why must children die (with the help of taxpayer dollars overseas, no less) with a stroke of a pen? Why does our president have to apologize to other nations which will never, as you say, “unclench their fist”? Why is there an extreme position on climate change, formerly known as global warming, of which there is no such thing? Why is the government taking over private companies? The government can’t run a hot dog stand let alone banks, railroads, and the postal service. When are you going to realize all of this? When do you start believing in the American people, sir? I can point you in the right direction. You can start lifting the country up when you start lifting the American citizen up. Not with hand-outs and bailouts and stimulus packages. No, it won’t be accomplished in that manner. You have to start by saying, “As your president, I believe wholeheartedly and without reservation, in the American people and in the American way of life.” When you can begin to convince the country that you believe in us, that’s when I will no longer ask for your resignation. John P. Sharkey Ticonderoga

Look for Coupons in All the Right Places

W

hen people hear how much money I save each week on my grocery bill by using coupons, there are those who conclude that I must use secret, special coupons that the rest of the world isn't clued into. In one of my coupon classes a woman asked, "Where do you find these coupons? I noticed my friend has different coupons in her paper than I do." Well, there's a reason for that. Did you know that the coupons you receive in your Sunday newspaper can be different depending on which paper you subscribe to? At times, companies wishing to reach different market areas will offer coupon promotions to specific newspapers. While all Sunday papers have coupon inserts, the coupons may vary depending on which paper you receive. I subscribe to two papers on Sunday, our local town newspaper and the big Chicago newspaper. While many times both papers will carry the same coupons, there are also times when one paper will have more or different coupons than another. The fact that different newspapers carry different coupons is usually - pardon the pun - news to most people. Obviously, I love coupons, and I enjoy receiving both newspapers on Sunday, not only to keep up on the local and regional news but also to maximize the number of coupons I get each week. Depending on where you live, it may be worth your while to see what coupons are available in each newspaper. While the newspapers inserts are always going to be the primary and best source for coupons, another good place to find coupons is on the Internet. Hundreds of product manufacturers and grocery stores themselves offer printable coupons for their products. Printing coupons from the Internet is easy to do. Browse to the Web site of the manufacturer of the product you're interested in. Look for a link to print coupons and select the ones you would like to print. Some Web sites may ask you to register for a free account. Others may ask you to install their plug-in that will allow you to print their coupons each time you visit. Then, simply click the Print Coupons link and the coupons will be sent right to your

printer. It's good to note, too, that you're allowed to print most Internet coupons twice. Make sure to go back and print another set if you'd like to buy more than one of each item, which is always a smart idea when the price is low. Check your store's Web site for coupons, too. Many stores offer printable coupons on their Web sites and some will also offer By Jill Cataldo electronic coupons that you can load to your shopper's discount card digitally, via the store's Web site. This is an even easier way to use coupons since you don't need to print them out at all. Another great place to find good coupons is in grocery stores themselves. Don't forget to look for coupons in the aisles near the products you're shopping for. There are coupon dispensers and displays throughout the grocery store. You'd be surprised how many times you might find an item on sale for $1 ... and a dispenser full of $1 coupons right above it. Take advantage of both. Remember, pairing a $1 coupon with a $1 sale is one of the easiest ways to get groceries for free. Next week, I'll answer some more questions from readers like you. If you're getting started with coupons or you're a seasoned couponer with a question, please feel free to e-mail it to me at jill@ctwfeatures.com. Your answer may appear in a future column.

Ti scout earns Eagle award

David Cook of Ticonderoga has earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He is the son of Jeff and Joanne Cook of Ticonderoga. TICONDEROGA — A Ticonderoga teen has achieved scouting’s highest honor. David Cook of Ticonderoga has earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He is the son of Jeff and Joanne Cook of Ticonderoga. Cook, a member of Venture Crew 72 and Boy Scout Troop 72, has been in Scouting for over 11 years. For his Eagle service project, Cook planned and

managed the building of a lean-to on the VFW property in Ticonderoga. The property is being developed by the VFW for youth groups such as the Boy Scouts to use for camping. Cook, a graduate of St. Mary's School and Ticonderoga High School, will be attending St. Lawrence University this fall.

County From page 1 officials who recently met with Richard Devlin, chair of the State Traffic Safety Board, which is the agency that oversees the use of STOP DWI funds. One main concern voiced by Devlin was that the contracts used to appropriate the funds to municipalities were not properly detailing the criteria for using STOP DWI funds, said Scozzafava; a concern that the group agreed to address. “So there’s going to be a lot more accountability for Lake Placid, Moriah, Ticonderoga, or any municipality that receives STOP DWI funds,” Scozzafava said. Although the vehicles wouldn’t have to be exclusively used for STOP DWI, County Manager Daniel Palmer explained, they do have to show a record of being frequently used for that purpose. “Our police departments need to log when they’re on DWI patrol,” said Scozzafava, adding that quarterly reports would have to be filed to prove the vehicle was primarily being used to address DWI infractions. By virtue of a law adopted in 1980, each county in New York State is allotted a STOP DWI fund, which is a collection of mandatory fines imposed for DWI and similar offenses within the county. The county budget estimates about $87,500 each year for the fund. Each county is required to have a designated STOP DWI coordinator, and an advisory board for the fund is strongly recommended. Essex County has operated without an advisory board for more than a decade, but Scozzafava urged other supervisors to consider re-instituting one. Schroon Lake Supervisor Cathy Moses inquired about using STOP DWI funds for community events, such as one that was held in her town recently. County Attorney Dan Manning stressed that such an event would have to be exclusively centered around preventing drunk driving. Essex County District Attorney Julie Garcia said an advisory board would be useful in helping to determine appropriate uses for the funds, and that the event put on in Schroon Lake was an example that deserved more scrutiny. “This is one of those things [the Traffic Safety Board sees] as being egregious spending,” she said, claiming that the town filed a $10,000 voucher for the event, which featured fireworks and live entertainment. Moses said the amount was significantly lower. Garcia added STOP DWI funds could not be used for events simply because they’re promoted as being non-alcoholic. “It just doesn’t make sense,” said Garcia, stressing events would need to have a clear anti-DWI message for attendees. “I think the educational component is the most important.” Committee members voted unanimously for the approval of the police vehicle expenses, which amounted to $10,000 for the Lake Placid Police Department and $20,000 for the Moriah Police Department.

PORT HENRY — According to the National Center for Summer Learning (NCSL), children experience learning losses when not engaged in educational activities for extended periods of time. Commonly referred to as summer slide, this overall decline in learning leaves many parents wondering how they can keep their children's minds actively engaged outside of the classroom. Get them involved in a summer arts program. There are also a lot of fun and educational activities at your local library. Another way to keep your children's minds active this summer is to be sure they read Kidsville News! Encourage them to work the puzzles, read the educational articles and draw a picture and send it to Truman! Also, be sure to click on the Parent/teacher resource link on our website at www.kidsvillenews.com/northernny <http://www.kidsvillenews.com/northernny> , download the worksheets that correspond to Kidsville News content and work with your children to complete them. CROWN POINT — In commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the construction of the historic Crown Point Road, hikers from the Crown Point Road Association will take part in an endto-end hike across Vermont this summer. Starting at Crown Point on Aug. 9 during the French and Indian War encampment at the fort, the trek will pass through the Vermont towns of Addison, Bridport, Orwell, Shoreham, Whiting, Sudbury, Brandon, Pittsford, Proctor, Rutland, Clarendon, Shrewsbury, Plymouth, Mt. Holly, Ludlow, Cavendish, Weathersfield and Springfield, ending at Fort No. 4 in Charlestown, N.H. All these towns grew up on the old road which served as a conduit not only for the movement of troops and supplies during the French and Indian and Revolutionary Wars, but also for the wagons and possessions of early settlers. Hikers will maintain a day-by-day schedule as much as possible, walking 610 miles a day and camping at pre-arranged sites. No private property will be crossed without prior permission. The itinerary is being

posted on the CPRA website [www.crownpointroad.org and location of the hikers will be up-dated every day. The website also provides

information about the history of the Crown Point Road and the Association. Hike leaders are James Rowe, CPRA president, and

James Moore, CPRA treasurer. CPRA member Hunter Melville has plans to run the length of the road.

Flight program comes to Schroon Lake By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com SCHROON LAKE — If missionaries are to carrying on their work in some of the world’s most remote regions, they need to utilize modern technology. That’s why the Schroon airport became a “jungle” recently. “Today, missionaries often fly into remote jungles and other places to deliver their message,” explained Paul Bubar of Word of Life. “We’re fortunate to have some ‘jungle’ pilots visiting.” Five of those pilots spent a week exposing teens from Word of Life Island to flight at the local airport through the Brigade Air program. “Today most mission aviation organizations are diligently seeking candidates to fill positions as trained pilots, mechanics and other support personnel providing air service for many missionaries who need it,” said Bruce Wolff, Brigade Air director. The Schroon program included five pilot/instructors and 11 teens ages 13-18 flying Piper Cherokee 140 planes. The pilots and would-be pilots spent the week flying around the Adirondacks. They practiced take-offs and landings by flying from Schroon to Glens Falls and back. Luke VanderWiele, a Schroon Lake native, was one

of the pilot/instructors. “The idea is to give kids a chance to get a feel for aviation before they decide to drop a ton of money into flight lessons and things,” VanderWiele said. “It’s a good program. We had a lot of fun.” VanderWiele, a 2006 Schroon Lake Central School graduate, has long been fascinated with aviation. He was a licensed pilot while in high school and this spring graduated from Liberty University’s School of Aeronautics. Home for the summer, VanderWiele will return to Liberty this fall to teach flying while he looks for a position with a commercial airline. The Schroon Lake lessons were valuable to all — instructors and campers. “It was a great teaching experience for me,” VanderWiele said.

Letters become historical book POTTERSVILLE — A POttersville woman has turned the struggles of her ancestors into a book. Jodie Sewall, a Times of Ti contributor, has transcribed the letters of her great-greatgreat-great-grandparents Oliver and Eleanor Boizard. The letters provide a firsthand account of their lives during the mid 1800s. Long Distance Love 1855-1870 has been published on Jodie Sewall Lulu.com, an online marketplace for digital content. In 2005 Sewall began the task of transcribing her family’s personal collection of 100 letters written by her ancestors when she discovered that a small museum in the town of Empire, Mich., had an additional 157 letters they had written. The local historians in Michigan were just as surprised to discover that there were more letters to this collection. A plan was formed to reunite both sets of letters into a book and Sewall began the task of transcribing each of the letters and researching the historical events and people that are

mentioned throughout. Oliver and Eleanor Boizard were married in 1855 and over the course of the next 15 years spent many months and even years separated from each other due to war and the necessity of living wherever work was available. The letters are first-hand accounts of life during the Third Seminole Indian War in Florida, Army life in the Nebraska Territory, the Civil War and life in Chicago and Glen Arbor in the 1860s. There is also a section containing over 40 pictures, newspaper clippings and pages from the Boizard family Bible. Sewall grew up in Michigan but has been a resident of upstate New York for 20 years. Her book can be found at http://stores/lulu.com/sewall and will soon be available via all major book distributors.

Elizabethtown Community Hospital

24-Hour Emergency Care Close to Home

The Heart of Your Community

Jamie Clark woke up one morning with his face feeling limp. After a call to his doctor, he and his wife immediately went to the ER at ECH. “Obvious signs pointed to Bell’s palsy,” said Mr. Clark. “But the Physician Assistant on duty took the time to investigate further.” It turns out Mr. Clark had Lyme disease and since it was found early, the disease was easily treatable. Instances like this have made the Paul Clark family realize the importance of having a good hospital in their community and why they have chosen to support Elizabethtown Community Hospital.

Essex County Office for the Aging 518-873-3695 • 877-464-1637 County Complex, Elizabethtown, NY 12932

Medications and new systems It is very important to let the doctor or nurse know if the person in your care has new symptoms after a new medication is started. The person in your care may not be able to tolerate the medicine or dose prescribed, so the doctor will need to make changes that allow the person in your care to tolerate the medication better. If the person in your care is experiencing extreme difficulty, call an ambulance immediately. Some people with heart failure have a sudden change in their symptoms that requires immediate attention, like sudden onset of shortness of breath or a fainting spell. If you feel it is urgent, DO NOT WAIT for the doctor or nurse to get back to you, CALL 911 immediately. (Taken from Caregiver Assistance News)

Protect yourself from health care fraud Health care fraud is not just about losing money, it can make you sick or hurt you. From unsafe drugs sold on the Internet as a “cure” for cancer, to wheelchair billing plots that try to bilk consumers and Medicare out of millions of dollars for unneeded or improper equipment, health care fraud is everyone’s concern! Health care fraud - errors and abuse - costs the US between $80 and $160 billion a year. $1 of every $10 spent on public insurance programs like Medicare and Medicaid is lost to fraud. Health care fraud causes big financial problems for you as well. The most recent estimate is that consumers themselves lose more than $10 billion each year to health care fraud. Everyone pays the price for health care fraud, errors and abuse, through higher insurance payments, increased costs for medical services and equipment, and greater expenses for Medicare and Medicaid. To learn more about how to protect yourself or join in the fight against fraud, contact Essex County Office for the Aging @ 873-3695 or 1-877-464-1637. They can provide information and help with identifying or reporting health care fraud.

Food safety for seniors Knowledge of food safety is important for Seniors. Some of the changes that our bodies undergo as we age affect our ability to combat bacteria. This makes safe food handling vitally important. Here are a few guidelines: * Refrigerate or freeze all perishable foods. Your refrigerator temperature should be 40 degrees or less; the freezer should be at zero degrees or less. * NEVER thaw at room temperature - thaw in the fridge or microwave. Brothers Marvin to benefit from golf tourney By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com ELIZABETHTOWN — Two teenage brothers faced with a life-threatening heart condition are inviting golfers from around the North Country to join them once again for a day out on the greens. The second annual Brock and Connor Marvin Golf Tournament will be held at The Westport Country Club Friday Aug. 21, a fundraiser to support the two boys, who anticipate exorbitant out-of-pocket medical expenses. After he suffered a heart attack in April 2008, doctors discovered 15-year-old Brock Marvin had dilated cardiomyopathy, a disease that causes the heart to grow three times its normal size and pump blood at a rate significantly lower than the average person. Since then, Brock’s father, Walter “Smitty” Marvin III, mother Darlene Mitchell and stepmother, Margot Roemischer, have undertaken a continued effort to seek effective treatment for him, and raise funds to pay for it. Last year ’s tournament, held at the Lake Placid Club, drew over 140 golfers and raised more than $12,000 for a medical trust fund set up to do just that. This year ’s tournament has some additional goals, however. Last fall, the Marvins decided to have 13year-old Connor tested for the disease, too, since it is often the result of a genetic defect. In March, doctors confirmed the test as positive. “His heart had already started to enlarge at that time,” said Roemischer, noting that the early detection will hopefully provide an advantage in treatment. Though both boys have been able to lead a relatively normal lifestyle, they have each had pacemakers implanted to prevent cardiac arrest and have had to give up any activities that will elevate their heart rate. As a result, golf has become one of their favorite sports. Treatment for the disease is limited, and many patients eventually require heart transplants. A new treatment involving

Brock, Smitty, and Connor Marvin, enjoy a walk down the 18th fairway on the Old Course at St. Andrews Links in Fife, Scotland. The three visited the site during a trip to the 2009 British Open that was paid for by the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Brock and Connor, who have both been diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy, will be the beneficiaries of a golf tournament scheduled for Aug. 21 at the Westport Country Club. adult stem cells has shown promising results, but is extremely expensive and not widely available. “We want to have a monetary foundation for these boys, because they’re going to have to go through this their whole lives,” said Roemischer. “Health insurance will cover much of it, but not all.” Though doctors say Brock’s condition has

worsened, it is currently manageable through medication and his pacemaker, Roemischer said, but the family is assessing his status on a day-to-day basis and it’s likely he’ll need a heart transplant within the next two years. “His whole disposition is remarkably strong and optimistic,” she said, “which is huge at this point because his attitude could

make or break him.” Besides golf, one thing helping to keep the boys’ spirits up has been the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the national organization that grants wishes for children with life-threatening illnesses. In January, the Make-A-Wish foundation granted Brock an all-expenses-paid trip with Smitty and Connor to LaQuinta, Calif. for the Bob Hope Classic, a pro-celebrity golf tournament, where he had the chance to get a lesson from golf legend Arnold Palmer. Just weeks ago, Connor had his Make-AWish granted when he, together with Brock and Smitty, were flown out to Scotland to attend this year ’s British Open. “He said his favorite part was walking down the 15th fairway with John Daly,” Roemischer said. The trio also took some time to visit the world’s oldest golf course at the nearby St. Andrews Links. Since the foundation has done so much for their family, Roemischer said the tournament in Westport will include contests to raise funds for Make-A-Wish in addition to Brock and Connor ’s medical fund. Most of all, though, the event itself represents something for the boys to look forward to. “It’s just one of those little things we can do that is so huge for them,” she said. “It give them a little sparkle in their eye; a little more joy in their life.” Check-in for the tournament is at 9 a.m. Aug. 21. The format will be a four-man scramble with a 10 a.m. shotgun start. An entry fee of $75 per golfer includes 18 holes of golf, cart, food, on-course refreshments and prizes. Several local businesses have already offered to contribute as green and tee sponsors, but Roemischer said more are still needed. Pre-registration for participants, along with payment, is due by Aug. 14. More information, including an online registration application, can be found at www.brockssave.9k.com or by sending an email to margotroemischer@yahoo.com.
