Commuting ... at a snail’s pace By John Gereau times_sentinel@denpubs.com CROWN POINT — Micheala Martin sat in an endless line of rush hour traffic last week, nervously drumming her fingers on the steering wheel. The Crown Point ferry — her ride home — was nowhere in sight. “This is ridiculous,” she said afI know it is frustratter stepping ing ... the wait can be out of her car to talk substantial, especially about her during rush hour daily commute. “I am — Bethany Kosmidor half an hour late picking up my little girl at day care.” Martin, who lives in Bristol and travels to and from work in Plattsburgh, said she routinely waits an hour or more to cross the lake where the Lake Champlain Bridge once stood. Summer traffic has compounded the holdup, she said. Work has begun to replace the bridge and a new crossing is expected to be open in about a year — but for commuters like Martin, that can’t come soon enough. “It is impossible to plan or stick to a work

CROWN POINT — Plans for the creation of a Crown Point Chamber of Commerce are moving forward. A group of 16 people recently gathered for a pot luck dinner meeting at the Stoney Lonesome Bed and Breakfast to discuss the possible future formation and feasibility of a Crown Point chamber. “Enthusiasm was high as some people met for the first time and testified to others who weren’t able to make it, but are very interested in being kept abreast of developments and future meeting dates,” said Nancy Ockrin, a leader in the movement. Attending the meeting were Crown Point Supervisor Bethany Kosmider, Joe and Cindy Bodette of Frenchman’s Restaurant, Bonnie Sprinkle of Achieve Fitness, Glen Buell of the Salvation Army, Paul Burns of Modex Consulting, Sonny and Sue Harper of Harper ’s Outdoor Wood Furnaces, Gary and Karyn Varmette of D & G Canopy Rental, Don and Joan Miller of Miller ’s Antiques, John and Sharon Hieber, and the hosts, John and Nancy Ockrin of Stoney Lonesome Bed and Breakfast.

Revitalization group forms in Ti TICONDEROGA — The Ticonderoga Revitalization Alliance has formed with an eye toward improving the local economy. The group has the support of the Ticonderoga town board. Alex Levitch, Alliance chairman, has high hopes for the group. “Through the alliance, a new compact between the community and its citizens is being defined; for the first time, all the competing interest groups and factions have been brought to the same side,” he said. “Rather than through handouts, we are fixing our problems through a series of high return investment opportunities.” Ticonderoga Deb Malaney believes the alliance is much needed. “The Ti economy is a closed loop; folks are getting served ever staler and diminishing pieces of the same economic pie,” she said. “Families go to bed hungry in our town. Young people have to start out somewhere else. Folks in their prime working years are often stuck in lower-wage jobs with little savings and equity value in their home and couldn’t leave town if they wanted to. Many of our elderly live in poverty.” Malaney and Levitch are determined to reverse Ti’s economic fortunes through the alliance and open up the region’s clogged economy to a fresh flow of capital, people

and ideas. So far, 50 Alliance members have pledged $25,000 to the cause, as well as help in a handful of early alliance backed projects. “That’s the equivalent of raising $750,000 from our major corporate citizens, which is exactly what we plan to do,” Levitch said. “The new compact has everyone vested as much in the revitalization as in the day-today.” Kelly O’Neil-Teer, the alliance’s assistant executive director, said the group will unite the community and spur economic growth. “Imagine a town united not only in planning and politics, but in strategy and design,” she said. “The latter linking key elements of a large geographic footprint running from the fort to Four Corners, from Water Street to an historic downtown re-made in pedestrian square fashion. “Tourists will flock nine months out of the year as we invest in and promote our capital base of extraordinary natural, recreational and historical location,” O’Neil-Teer said. “They’ll also come in response to a burgeoning arts and artisans Main Street community, which we intend to build around the likes of a working replica of an 18th century French sawmill, the offer of cheap/sweat equity housing, studio and retail space and academic partnerships underpinning one or

more Institutes of the Arts right here in Ticonderoga. “Couple this tourist trade with the building of an entrepreneurial backbone to nurture and develop new businesses, aggressive outreach to more light industry, expansion of the regional box retailing trade, more housing affordable at all levels — and you have the plan,” O’Neil-Teer said.

Ti Author Series continues TICONDEROGA — Fort Ticonderoga’s Author Series continues on Sunday, Aug. 15, with Carl R. Crego, author of Fort Ticonderoga. The program takes place in the Deborah Clarke Mars Education Center at Fort Ticonderoga at 2 p.m., followed by a book signing at 3 p.m. in the Fort Ticonderoga Museum Store. Using many rare and never-before-seen postcards and images, Fort Ticonderoga is the first illustrated military history of the fort, as well as the first book to present a pictorial account of its restoration. While researching the book, Crego uncovered many forgotten details and anecdotes about the fort’s restoration, which has been ongoing since 1909. His talk will trace the first phase of the restoration starting with the Ticonderoga Historical Society’s Sept. 2, 1908 Press Clambake and running through 1924. He will show many postcards and images that he has collected since the publication of his book. A highlight of the program is the first public viewing of a comprehensive 1924 photographic survey of the Fort by photographer Walter C. Scott. Crego received his doctorate in finance and economics from the George Washington University. For many years he was on the faculty of Pace University’s Lubin School of Business and was a lecturer at the New York Society of Security Analysts. Crego currently divides his time between Hong Kong, where he teaches finance and securities licensing courses, and Diamond Point. He is an active volunteer at Fort Ticonderoga and is currently working on a biography of fort’s first major benefactor, Col. Robert M. Thompson. Ticonderoga Streetfest a huge success Reflections Reflections T To the Times of Ti: We extend our heartfelt thank you to Denton Publications and everyone else involved in helping us with the huge success of our organization’s second annual Streetfest held Saturday, July 31 in downtown Ticonderoga. We owe this success to the efforts of so many enthusiastic sponsors, partners and dedicated volunteers. There were over 70 vendors, exhibitors, and other participants who deserve our sincerest thanks for their assistance in turning the heart of downtown into a festive pedestrian mall for the entire day, filled with a variety of shopping, eating, and entertainment options. While we can’t thank each and every person or organization within this space, we do want to take this opportunity to recognize some who offered outstanding support and encouragement: Town Supervisor Deb Malaney, Chief Mark Johns and our police department; our Town highway department; the Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce; Fort Ticonderoga’s Fife and Drum Corps; Beth and Scott Hill; Joe

Hoell; the Anderson brothers who provided fife and drum music; violinist Kristin Dickerson; musicians Cosby Gibson and Tom Staudle; the Bagpiper ???, the Ticonderoga Federal Credit Union for sponsoring Penelope the Clown, downtown merchants who displayed their wares on the street and other local businesses who helped promote the event with advertising and other donations; the vendors who brought their arts, crafts, and specialties to our town; farmers’ market participants; organizations like Interlakes Health and Fletcher Allen Health Care and the Blackwatch Library for their booths; International Paper for donating paper for posters; and Sarge Condit of Adirondack Waste Management who generously donated portable toilets; George Silva, Roger Nolfe, Ed Markiewicz, Paul Belus, Carl Van Hoesen, Howard Ticknor and Don Hardy who proudly displayed their unique and vintage cars for all to enjoy; Hacker Boat for displaying

a rich mahogany masterpiece; and the Ticonderoga Fire Department volunteers for displaying their truck, plus their lovable mascot who walked the street and brought smiles to faces. Last but certainly not least, we offer sincerest thanks to all the hard-working committee volunteers who spent hours and hours planning the event: Rolly Allen, Sandie Bolton, Barb Brassard, Diane Farinick, Donna Van Wirt, Chief Mark Johns, Bob Dedrick, Ross Kelley, Nancy Kelley, Neil Rypkema, Chattie Van Wert, Art Hatfield, Nicole Pressley, Pam Nolan, and John Reale. This group worked tirelessly and enthusiastically to pull the event together, and we appreciate the great job they did. (And please forgive me if I omitted anyone.) Plans are already under way for 2011! Susan Rathbun, Chairman, Ticonderoga Montcalm Street Partnership, Inc.

helped out when my daughter Jessie was hurt while playing softball in Putnam. I don't know the names of everyone who helped her but I am very greatful to you all. I am so glad that there are caring and dedicated people who give of themselves and volunteer their time to the local EMS systems. Jessie broke both of the bones in her lower leg and will most likely need surgery. When we got to the hospital the staff told us the bones were in good alignment and I credit the EMS staff at the scene. They immediately stabilized and splinted the leg. he following are letters written by Ellen D. Witherbee Atwell in 1899 and 1900 to her nephew Tyler Reed Woodbridge of Victor, Colo. She was age 64 at that time. She tells of her family life, traditions, and some facts of history relating to the Witherbee family, handed down by her parents and grandparents, written at Port Henry. These letters were sent to me from Bill Knowlton of Liverpool in 2002. Ellen Atwell was his great aunt. This the fifth installment in a series that continues in the Times of Ti the second week of each month. In the fall commenced our busy season. Cloth was woven for the children’s dresses and sent to the mill to be dyed and pressed. The dresses and calico aprons were made, and knitting, which was always on hand, done in odd moments. We went to a shoemaker to be measured for stout shoes for winter wear. We had quilted hoods tied tight down over our ears and well over our faces, with capes to protect the neck. Our dresses came nearly to the tops of our shoes, and we had pantaletts tied on with our stockings below the knee, and they came down over our feet which made us look something like a Shanghi. Our underclothes of woolen came nearly to the bottom of our dresses. We had knit mittens and shawls pinned tightly around our shoulders. Thus equipped, we were ready for school. With our dinner baskets we would wade through snow banks and we thought it great fun. After the children were made comfortable, food was provided for the winter. There were no markets for meats so there was a time to slaughter. The pigs came first. The pork was salted, hams smoked, head cheese made, intestines cleaned for sausage skins, the sausage meat frozen for convenience, and souse made of the feet, ears, and tails. After the sausage meat was frozen some of us cut the meat in pieces and some chopped it while Mother put it in the skins - this was done by a sausage filler. This was a tin tube about four inches across with a small tube on one end on which the skins were drawn. The meat was put into the tube and a wooden pusher fitted it into links. They were frozen - also a quantity of mince pies. Mother always beguiled us into thinking we were having a good time and, while we were laboring over some disagreeable job, she told us ghost stories, and while we were listening with our hair standing on end, we were not conscious of our labors. But the ghost was always laid fully to our satisfaction. After the pigs came the killing of a beef. Part of this was frozen for fresh meat, some salted, some dried and the stomach made into tripe. Then came the turkeys and chickens which were killed and frozen. As our ice house was an unfinished woodshed chamber, a January thaw was a calamity. A fish peddler came occasionally from Boston with fish and oysters. Sometimes Father took turkeys and poultry to Boston and brought something back from the city. He would be away a month, perhaps, driving there and back. We made our own butter, raised wheat and corn - in fact, everything except sugar, spices, and other grains. Brown sugar and molasses was commonly used in a sugar loaf which was a cone of sugar done up in purply paper and it was so hard that we had to use a knife and hammer to chip it off. But it was always very white and nice and Father always treated us when he brought it home. Spices were never ground but were pounded in mortar; also coffee and salt.

Painted soldiers on guard in Ti TICONDEROGA — The Ticonderoga Montcalm Street Partnership has enlisted 34 sponsors and numerous area artists to participate in its exciting new "street art" project running all summer through September along Montcalm Street and at nearby locations. "We are absolutely delighted with the response," said Sue Rathbun, the organization chairman. This project called for mustering numerous sponsors to finance the 6-foot 2-inch wooden soldier cut-outs and coordinating area artists to decorate them, and in many cases find businesses to adopt the soldiers and display them along both sides of the street from the Liberty Monument to the Heritage Museum. According to Rathbun, the interest was so high, soldier entries may be seen at several other locations around town including Fort Ticonderoga and the Ticonderoga Country Club. Rathbun, who owns a long-established jewelery and gift shop on Montcalm Street, got the idea for this project when she kept seeing her business neighbor across the street, George DeMers of Adirondack Furniture by George (113 Montcalm Street) line up his handmade soldiers on the street each morning. She suggested the idea to the TMSP promotion Committee, and they loved it, too. With the committee's help, in a few days over a dozen soldiers were ordered.

Strictly for this TMSP project, George offered a special price of $40 per sponsor for an unpainted soldier template. Normally, he sells his painted six foot soldiers for $165 and more for his eight foot ones. Rathbun said it has been somewhat of a challenge to get enough artists to decorate all the soldiers, but luckily a few creative volunteers have stepped forward and painted several. Plans are for the soldiers to be auctioned off at a social event in the fall. Proceeds will be used to make future downtown streetscape improvements with the highest priority project to bring back the lights to the beautiful historic Liberty Monument. Details of the fall event are being developed and will be announced soon. Ticonderoga's street art project is similar to ones featured in Glens Falls, Saratoga, Brandon, and Bennington, Vermont, where artists have decorated everything from Adirondack chairs to horses, moose, and pigs. The TMSP Promotion committee volunteers thought it quite fitting for Ticonderoga's main street and important gateway to Fort Ticonderoga to be lined with wooden soldiers. If anyone wishes to volunteer as an artist, please contact Sue Rathbun at 585-2244. We are still in need of artists for two templates.

Decorated soldiers, like the one pictured above, have been showing up all over Ticonderoga. Photo by Elaine Monroe

Ti scouts stay active TICONDEROGA — Ticonderoga Girl Scouts have been busy. In early January scouts began knocking on doors taking orders for the annual cookie sale. The sale continued through the end of March. A total of 991 cases were sold, which was an increase of 100 cases from the previous year. While they were out taking orders as part of their community service project they were also asking for everyone to purchase an extra box which would be shipped to the troops overseas; 23 cases or 276 boxes were shipped to troops overseas. “A very special thank goes out all those in our community who helped make this community service project a huge success and to The American Legion Post 224 who helped with the distribution of these cookies to our troops overseas,” said Debbie Barber, scout leader. In April scouts hosted a Lady Bug Theme Mother/Daughter Tea at the Ti fire house. Approximately 30 area girls from Schroon Lake, Ticonderoga and Moriah attended this event with their mothers. “We would like to thank Melody Borho and her Troop 3776 for organizing this event and to the Ti fire house allowing us to host this event,” Barber said. In May the Southern Essex County Girl Scouts held their end-of-the-year celebration in the Mars Educational Center located at Fort Ticonderoga. Throughout the year girls worked on the requirements for them to bridge to the next level of girl scouting. Bridging from Daisies to Brownies were Lillian Bain, Adriana Borho, Maria Cole, Lorelei Leerkes, Molly Price, Aracely Silva and Kristen Strum; bridging from Juniors to Cadettes were Jordyn Borho, Kassie Gijanto, Eryka Hayes, Sara Vradenburg, Courtney Wranasky, Emily Powers, MacKenzie Strum, Megan Clark, Susan Ward, Makayla Holt, Shelby Turner and Selena Stacy; bridging from Cadettes to Seniors were Victoria Sawyer, Laura West, Sara West, Kaleigh Malaney, Michaela Comes and Rebecca Barber; and bridging from Senior to Ambassador was Shannen Kelly.

Girls in Troops 3193 and 3068 earned their Bronze Award, which is the highest award earned by a Junior Girl Scout. The first went to the following girls in Troop3068 led by Kim Powers for hosting a story hour at the library during the school year: Emily Powers, MacKenzie Strum, Megan Clark, Susan Ward, Makayla Holt and Shelby Turner. The second went to the girls in Troop 3193 led by Lisa Westervelt for their collection of items for the animal shelter: Frances Barry, Jordyn Borho, Elena Doolan, Kassie Gijanto, Eryka Hayes, Sara Vradenburg and Courtney Wranasky. The next highest award a girl can receive at the Cadette/Senior Level is the Silver Award. This award went to Becky Barber for hosting a Cookie Kickoff for the area scouts. Also in May at Moriah School the following girls bridged to the next level: Brooke Mildon, Danielle Chamberlain, Harmony LaFountain, Rayven Perkins, Tamayra Arno and Sheyera Little. Caleigh Lamour and Makayla Stockwell both earned their bronze award. They did a group project with their troop and with Daisy Troop 4036. They did two food drives for the local food pantry. Over 35 boxes of food was collected between the two drives. After the food drives they then went to the food pantry to stock the shelves. “The Southern Essex County Girl Scouts would like to say a special thank you to Kim Powers for organizing this event and to Fort Ticonderoga for the use of the Great Room in the Mars Educational Center,” Barber said. In June approximately 15 area girls camped at Roger ’s Rock Campsite. “A special thank you goes to Corinna Woods and Lisa Westervelt for organizing this event and to Roger ’s Rock Campsite for allowing us to camp there,” Barber said. The Service Unit acknowledged Ticonderoga Central School District, Moriah Central School District; Schroon Lake Central School District, Adirondack Lanes, Methodist Church, Ti Fire Department, Ticonderoga Armory, Fort Ticonderoga for the use of the Great Room and Ticonderoga Elks Lodge and

Bronze Award Recipients of Troop 3068 include Shelby Turner, Makayla Holt, Susan Ward, Mackenzie Strum and Emily Powers. Leaders are Virginia Holt and Kim Powers.

Bronze Award Recipients of Troop 3193 include Frances Barry, Jordyn Borho, Elena Boolan, Kassie Gijanto, Eryka Hayes, Sara Vradenburg and Cournet Wranasky.

Roger ’s Rock Campsite for contributions to the scouting program as well as to Boyeau’s, Marc Potter and Patricia Shultz and Stewart. “We would also like to thank Wal-Mart for their donation of bags to help with our cookie booth sales,” Barber said. “Thank you to both Stewarts and Wal-Mart for allowing us to host our cookie booth sales during the month of March. We would not have been able to sell 100 more case of cookies this year without their support. If we have forgotten anyone, please accept our apologies and thanks.” The Area Girl Scouts are currently taking registrations for the 2010-2011 school year.

CROWN POINT • TIMES OF TI - 9

Crown Point bird count reaches milestone CROWN POINT — The Crown Point Bird Banding Association marked a milestone during the spring migration by capturing and releasing its 100th species of bird, an American Kestrel. It was the first small falcon ever banded on the Crown Point peninsula. Established in 1976, the bird migration monitoring station at Crown Point State Historic Site has banded a total of 15,976 birds. This year ’s banding by the volunteers was supervised by the association’s acting director, Gordon E. Howard, a professor in the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management at Clemson University in South Carolina. In May mist nets are set up and monitored, and birds who get caught in the nets are quickly banded and released back on their way. Information gathered has been vital to understanding migration trends and species population.

This spring 533 individual birds were banded, representing 55 different species, including 34 birds that were banded at Crown Point in previous years. Visiting student groups, elementary age though college, participate in the banding. Those who release a bird at first capture receive a certificate containing information about that bird and a short life history of the species. If these birds are recaptured in subsequent years the releasers are sent a postcard notifying them that “their bird” was recaptured at Crown Point. Since certificates were first issued in 1995, 1,089 certificates have been issued and 70 return notices have been sent to date. For one releaser, this will be the third postcard notifying her that her Black-capped Chickadee has returned. Remarkably, last month the station netted two returned birds that were first banded and released by young sisters (under 10 years of age when they initially released the birds

Chamber

1957. Ockrin said a subcommittee will meet soon to define the need for a Crown Point chamber. Once that’s complete, another meeting will be held for all interested people to attend. “At that time the goals and mission statement for the chamber will be presented, discussed and decided upon,” Ockrin said. “Again, all Crown Point business people and area residents are warmly invited to participate.” Kosmider urged local residents to be part of the chamber discussion. “We need to come together to foster a fresh sense of community in Crown Point,” she said. “If you are wondering if we need you — we need you — wonder no more. Come out and be a part of the Crown Point chamber team.”

From page 1 “The participants took turns introducing themselves and their businesses, sharing what they hoped to gain or see in a chamber, as well as what they might be able to bring to the table,” Nancy Ockrin said. “We need to know each other, so we, in turn, can help our community be known.” Joe Bodette said he looks forward to not hearing about any more businesses closing their doors, but rather to new businesses realizing that Crown Point, especially a Crown Point with an established chamber in

place, could indeed be a great place to begin a business adventure. Cindy Bodette suggested a local chamber can create a Crown Point map with all the area businesses in it. Buell said a chamber could help the community grasp that there is a yearround Salvation Army post in Crown Point, not just during the holidays. Joan Miller, a past Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce president, warned those gathered about the amount of time and work needed for such an undertaking. Crown Point businesses are now eligible to be members of the Ti chamber. The Ti chamber has 160 members, 15 from Crown Point. A chamber of commerce would not be new to Crown Point. The community had its own chamber in 1956 and

Commute From page 1 schedule,” she complained, leaning against her car. “One day you zip right across, the next you wait an hour and a half.” A few minutes later, the line moved a few hundred yards, transforming again to a parking lot for another 15 minutes as the two ferries crossed paths from one side to the other. Crown Point Supervisor Bethany Kosmider said she empathizes with motorists, and said she has fielded a number of calls from commuters upset at the wait in Crown Point and Chimney Point, Vt. “I know it is frustrating,” she said. “What I am hearing is that it wasn’t that bad until summer hit. Now the wait can be substantial, especially during rush hour.” Lake Champlain Transit (LCT) currently operates two ferries at the site of the former bridge, but there are slips built to accommodate up to four. Kosmider said she plans to ask LCT officials about adding a third ferry — at least during peak traffic times like 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. “I’m not sure what the answer will be,” she admitted. “I don’t know about the feasibility of running another ferry in the canal. here) who happen to live in Crown Point. Birds are drawn to Crown Point because of its location along a migration flyway, but they also stop to take advantage of the fairly large area of shrub land and early succession forests. Many birds favor this type of habitat which is becoming less and less common as these habitats are either converted to agricultural land or develop into mature forests over time. pretty congested now with two.” LCT Manager Margaret Murphy agreed that putting a third ferry in the rotation would only create gridlock. The company also does not have another ferry available at this time. “Three boats there would be on top of each other,” she said. “I think they would be forced to travel down or up the lake to stay out of the way of one another.” That scenario would also likely impact other boat traffic, she added. Murphy said the last two weeks in July and first two in August are traditionally the busiest time of year for the ferry service. She anticipates the problem to lessen in the fall. “It will die down in September,” she said. “In the meantime, we work as efficiently as we can.” The ferry service between Crown Point and Chimney Point, Vt. is a 24-hour service. There is no charge at the crossing, as the service is subsidized by the two states. While Martin said she appreciates not having to pay to cross, she said she is forced to at times when trying to make a tight schedule. “It certainly is easier to stick to a schedule when I cross in Charlotte,” she said. “But, at $18 for a round trip, it gets expensive.” “I wouldn’t be able to do it every day,” she added.

National Health Center Week observed locally MINEVILLE — National Health Center Week celebrated Aug. 8 – 14 this year. Hudson Headwaters Health Network, operating 12 community health centers in the

area, joins others across the nation with this year ’s theme, “Turning the Vision into Reality,” highlighting the 45-year record of health centers providing affordable, high

quality, cost-effective health care to medically vulnerable and under-served people in the United States. Hudson Headwaters has health centers in Bolton Landing, Chestertown, Glens Falls, Indian Lake, Moreau, Moriah, North Creek, Queensbury, Schroon Lake, Ticonderoga and Warrensburg. This special week recognized the role of health center providers in achieving the suc-

cess of the health center mission. From primary care physicians, to behavioral health specialists, to nurses and pharmacists, nearly 40,000 health care professionals serve on the front lines each day in health centers. Hudson Headwaters’ health centers have served the region for nearly 30 years, providing continuous primary and preventive care, and select specialty services. This care helps reduce the risk of new health care problems and lowers the overall cost of health care. With the observance of Denton Publications, Inc. We’re more than a newspaper, We’re a community service. National Health Center Week, Hudson Headwaters joined in the national celebration and recognizes the efforts of its board of directors and community advisory committees, in addition to its providers and staff. Each year community health centers serve more than 17 million citizens in more than 6,000 communities throughout urban and rural communities. Nearly half of these citizens are rural residents. By working together with schools, businesses, churches, community organizations, foundations, and state and local governments, these health centers strive to meet the special needs and priorities of communities and to improve the health and well being of countless families and individuals. SCHROON LAKE • TIMES OF TI - 13

Schroon Lake school marks anniversary SCHROON LAKE — Although Schroon Lake Central School is no longer “on the hill above the lakeside,” the alma mater still holds memories and admiration for many graduates. More than 500 current and former Schroon Lake Wildcats gathered July 31 on the front lawn of the school to celebrate and rededicate the 1935 school building. Dignitaries, who spoke highly of the school, included Essex County Clerk Joseph Provoncha (class of ’77), former school superintendent Michael Bonnewell, and Schroon Supervisor Cathy Moses (class of ’67). State Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward presented a plaque honoring the outstanding achievements of the institution of learning for the past 75 years. Both school board President John Armstrong and Interim Superintendent Gerald Blair addressed the on-going $14.7 million construction project with a pledge that the school will be opening again in September and the improved educational facilities will benefit many present and future students and their teachers. The featured speaker for the afternoon was former teacher and long-time Schroon Lake resident Lillian Richardson (class of ’47). Richardson reminisced about her changed perceptions as a Schroon Lake student, as a parent, as an elementary teacher for 26 years, and as an alumna. She emphasized that the community rededicating a very significant building. “But it’s only a building, and more impor-

tant are all the people who spent their time there learning, playing sports, and growing to become good friends and good citizens,” she said. Music was provided before the ceremony by Euanna Pigford, a former music teacher. During the program, Anita Masiello led a special chorus of Michael Jackson’s “Heal the World.” The contents of the cornerstone’s time capsule were unveiled by Roger Friedman (class of ’68) and Moses. There were pieces of memorabilia from the original dedication of the school in 1935 and from the 1985 celebration of 50 years. Added to the contents will be several items from the 75th celebration including an anniversary booklet, a tee shirt from the weekend and a poster that was part of a school project by student Ben Wisser advertising the 75th rededication ceremony. To cheers of celebration and a rousing rendition of the alma mater, “The Crimson and the White” by Clara Potter and Jennie Braman, the program concluded with a large cake releasing 75 balloons into the afternoon sky. The festivities continued with a chicken barbecue hosted by the Schroon Lake Fish and Game Club with many hours of effort provided by the Schroon Lake Teacher Association members. All those participating noted the words of Paul Leavitt, the town supervisor in 1935 at the dedication of the new school, who penned the following for the 50th anniversary: “in our imagination let us open those doors and watch

Each year, more than 770,000 Americans are injured because of medication errors. It has also been estimated that medication errors account for at least 7,000 deaths annually. Without a doubt, taking medications is serious business for you and your family. Keep the following in mind: * Know your medications inside and out. * Keep medications in their original containers. * Read the label on the container and comply with the medication directions. * Turn on the light - never take medication in the dark.

Medicare: Stay safe Medicare works hard to make sure that the doctors, health care providers, suppliers, and private companies it contracts with are honest. Use these tips to help prevent fraud: * Review your Medicare Summary Notice or any notice from your plan that shows charges for items or services you got. * Make sure Medicare wasn’t billed for an item or service you didn’t get. * Ask your doctor or other health care provider about any charge that may be wrong. * Call the HHS Office of Inspector General at 1-800447-8477 to report any concerns. TTY users should call 1-800-377-4950.

Know the facts about cancer Anyone can get cancer, but there are steps you can take to lower your risks: * If you smoke - stop. Medicare covers smoking cessation counseling if you have an illness caused or complicated by tobacco use. * Eat healthy and stay active. * Protect your skin against sun damage. * Get screened. Medicare covers the following screenings to help detect cancer early: > Colorectal cancer screenings > Mammograms > Pap test and pelvic exams (including a clinical breast exam) > Prostate cancer screenings

SATURDAY August 14, 2010

Susan L Morhouse August 6, 2010 TICONDEROGA — Susan L Morhouse (66) of Ticonderoga, N.Y. passed into the arms of her Lord Jesus Christ on August 6, 2010 after a seven year fight with cancer. Susan Kay Lee was born to Elwood M. Lee and Ruby Adele (Iverson) Lee in Seattle Washington in 1944. Susan is survived by her parents of Eagle Point, Oregon; her sisters Karen M. Dalton of Twin Falls, Idaho and Linda L. Pearsall of Orange County, California; one brother, Robert M. Lee of Eagle Point, Oregon; her husband, Thomas J. Morhouse of Ticonderoga; her son Thomas J. Morhouse III of New York, NY and her daughter, Mara M. Morhouse of Dallas, Texas. She has numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one brother, James E. Lee, of Eagle Point, Oregon. Susan graduated from Central Valley High School in Spokane Washington in 1962. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Montana and attended Washington University School of Architecture on scholarship, in pursuit of a Master’s degree. Susan taught art at all levels of education. First at Mazama High School in Klamouth Falls, Oregon; second at Washington University, School of Architecture; thirdly at North Country Community College in Ticonderoga, and at Sunday School as a member of the Corner Stone Alliance Church in Ticonderoga. Throughout her life Susan was an active artist and produced a wide variety of paintings, sculptures and installations; her creativity and intuition speak clearly throughout her body of work. She emphasized originality and held herself, her family, and her students to a higher standard. Susan loved the Lord Jesus Christ and enjoyed Bible studies, discussions, and learning with her Christian sisters. She did not adhere to the notion that her love of Christ was in any way incompatible with her apprehension and interest in science. Susan was an avid reader of various scientific journals and believed in a harmony between religion and science. She loved flowers. Her incredible talent for home cooking was a cornerstone for her family, and her home was always a sanctuary from the outside world for her children and husband. Susan requested there be no wake, funeral or memorial service. She was interred by her family on family property. Arrangements were made available under Wilcox and Regan funeral home in Ticonderoga. She would tell all that wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord, and to live as Jesus instructed, “'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind' and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Luke 10:27

The Dog Days of Summer

A guide's eye view of two happy campers on the go heading up the Bog River Flow.

H

ot, humid weather continues to cast a warm blanket over the region. The heat has been accompanied by several violent thunderstorms that have left a path of destruction in their wake. While the passing storms have provided spectacular evening entertainment with fantastic displays of chain lightning, the heavy rains have raised rivers and streams to spring levels. The lakes and ponds are full again and the fish are active. Rivers with steep gradients such as the Ausable and the Boquet have flushed quickly, while the slower moving waterways such as the Saranac, Hudson and the Raquette, will run high for a while. With the advent of these severe weather patterns, outdoor travelers should remain vigilant of the possibility for lightning strikes. Whether biking, hiking or on the water for any purpose, danger is omnipresent at this time of year. Get off the mountaintops, lakes, streams or rocks at the first hint of thunder and there will always be another day to enjoy.

Back to camp “We now no longer camp as for a night, but have settled down on earth and forgotten heaven” — Henry David Thoreau I’ve spent most of the past week in camp, traveling

through a series of lakes, rivers and ponds, where I discovered there is still a little bit of that forgotten heaven. My days have been full of paddling, fishing, hiking and swimming, while my evenings were spent around the campfire, telling tales, sharing laughs and shivering to ghost stories. Camp is a place where we can forgive and forget the inhibitions of regular life. It is a place where we can relax and be free to shed the normal constraints of everyday society. It is a special place where we can let our guard down, be ourselves and return to our roots. We retreat to camp to escape. Time slows down, noises become less apparent and our senses are enlivened. Life is less annoying and we are calmed. Stresses of regular life are removed as the days begin with a rising sun and depart with the arrival of heavy eyelids. In camp, a watch becomes an intrusion that’s better suited for town than for the country. An old friend and mentor once offered the finest description of camp that I have ever heard, explaining, “Camp is a place where you can spit, cuss, fart and scratch your butt in public…and nobody cares. When yer ’ in camp, it just don’t matter no more!” It’s been great fun to share these adventures with children and to again experience the pleasures of regular camp life through a younger set of eyes. Any kid that can get away with any of the actions mentioned above, without admonishment, is bound to be in for a good time! Kids are captivated by the simple chores of collecting firewood, starting a fire or cooking s’mores. Add in a salamander hunt, a frog safari, a bit of fishing and an evening of watching the night sky and you’ve got a recipe for some tired and happy kids. Falling asleep while a west wind blows, the loons wail and a coyote howls is simply a bonus to the day’s adventures. I have slept with my back to the earth for six out of the last seven days, and I found the experience to be very good for the soul. It is an incredibly intimate experience to sleep in an open camp, with the wind blowing through the trees, the stars sparkling in the night sky and the gentle lap of waves along the shore. In a word, I was “grounded” again and I am better adjusted to life for the experience. Over the past week, I have camped and fished through the Saranac Lakes, the St. Regis Lakes, the Bog River, Lows Lake and Hitchens Pond. I found the Saranacs rather quiet and the St. Regis also somewhat slow. However, the vast Bog River Wilderness was packed with travelers seeking solitude, which appeared to be in very limited supply. Regardless of the human traffic, the fishing has been excellent for bass due to a series of passing low-pressure systems. During these ‘Dog Days of Summer,’ a favorite activity is to pursue bass with a flyrod, in the early hours of the evening. Bumblebee pattern poppers have proven quite effective of late, especially when nothing else seems to work. When the waters grow flat and still, spin fishermen will find similar results with surface lures such as Little

Torpedos or Hula-poppers. Fishing, swimming and camping are some of the finest ‘kid friendly’ activities available and the current conditions are possibly the most conducive of the season. Taking a kid outdoors, whether for the day or a couple of nights is one of the least expensive methods of fostering an appreciation of the environment and cementing family bonds. Surveys regularly reveal that a ‘camping trip’ is commonly reported as the most indelible memory of our youth.
