TICONDEROGA — It should be a seamless return for Ticonderoga school children this year as Ticonderoga Central School's $23.8 million building and renovation project is progressing smoothly and on target for completion this fall. Ti Superintendent John McDonald said renovations to the elementary-middle school are expected to be complete when students return Sept. 7. The only work remaining will be a handful of upgrades to the high school — like replacing windows and having the new main office open. But those renovations can be done with school in session without impacting studies, and the main office can remain in its prior location until the new office is ready for occupancy, McDonald said. The project — approved by district voters in September 2007 — is currently under budget and has had few unexpected expenses. “Knock on wood, we are under budget and haven’t hit unexpected contingency costs like asbestos we were not aware of, or pipes
SCHROON LAKE — With the first day of school looming in early September, construction crews are still in the middle of Schroon Lake Central School’s $13.4 and $1.3 million dollar building projects. The first day of classes will, however, resume on schedule, according to interim superintendent Gerry Blair. Blair is confident that the renovations on the entire front and middle portions of the school will be completed for the arrival of students. Work will continue on hallways and classrooms after school hours until the completion of the project. “The students will enter a safe environment with no inconveniences to their learning,” said Blair. “Students will not have access to any part of the building that is any less safe than the one they left in June.” Students will have access to one completed new science classroom with updated lab. Construction began at the end of the 2009 school year with anticipation of finishing before the start of the upcoming school year. After several construction delays

Moriah planning 120th Labor Day celebration By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com MORIAH — The 120th annual Moriah Labor Day Weekend celebration promises to continue the tradition of a fun-filled community event. The two-day event Sept. 4 and 5, sponsored by the Moriah Chamber of Commerce, features a parade, fireworks, music, and plenty of activities for all ages. Jack Woods, president of the Moriah Chamber of Commerce, serves as one of the main organiz-
ers for the event. He said he can still remember the excitement of Moriah Labor Day celebrations he experienced as a young boy. “It’s been a tradition for over 110 years, and people have always loved to come to it,” Woods said, noting how the event was organized by the Moriah Fire Department until recent years. “We’re so lucky to have the fire department organize it for over 100 years,” he said. This year ’s celebration kicks off 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4 with bands performing at the Port Henry Beach. Food vendors will be on hand at the

The public is invited to dine at the Log House, shop in the Museum Store as well as enjoy the many activities at Fort Ticonderoga. General Pershing visited in those early years and many generations of guests have passed through its doors. The Log House serves breakfast and lunch daily and often features homemade items such as pies and muffins. “With such a wide variety on the menu and such a small space to work in, we were very pleased with the way the inspection went,” Treadway said. Using a combination of maps and-then and-now overlays, visitors can see how Ticonderoga used water energy generated by a drop in elevation greater than Niagara Falls, to become a center of manufacturing in North America. Helping explain “Why Ticonderoga is Here?” are a number of scale models of mills created by artist/historian Denise Huestis, along with the actual governor and water turbine that once produced hydro-electric power at Wadhams, NY.
The exhibit encourages visitors to walk the LaChute Trail and enjoy the natural beauty of the river that brought Ticonderoga to life. A ribbon cutting will take place at 12:15 p.m. and light refreshments will be served throughout the day. The Heritage Museum, located at the entrance to Bicentennial Park, is open 10-4 every day until Labor Day and weekends until Columbus Day. The Museum is open to the public, free of charge.

To the Times of Ti: I just returned from the Essex County Fair and hats off to the fair board for a job well done. As a past fair board President I think I tend to see things a bit different than the average Joe when I go to a fair. This year ’s fair was one of the nicest I've been to in a long time. From the clean appearance, to the new vendor building, to the sugar house, conservation area to an outstanding Floral Hall. If you missed the fair this year, try to remember it next year. A lot of people volunteer their time for our little fair that has so much to offer. Thanks for keeping it going. It is an event we should all be proud of. Paul Stephens, Westport
Thank you to Horace Nye To the Times of Ti: My father was a resident of the Horace Nye Nursing Home for the past three and a half years. He passed away last month, and I feel compelled to write a letter concerning the care he received. The nurses, aides, cleaning staff, dining room staff, social workers, and the office staff have been phenomenal! They are caring, loving folks who truly care about their patients and try their best to make the days more pleasant. Dr. Moisan is a wise and caring physician, who explains things to family and helps them make decisions. When my dad was nearing the end of this life, he was given the most amazing, loving, gentle care and attention. Moments after he passed away into Heaven, I was surrounded by loving staff who hugged me and cried with me. Their tears were real and heartfelt, and they helped me through a very difficult time. We should all be appreciative and thankful o the kind people who work at Horace Nye. It is such a hard job and they do it well. To all of you, my heartfelt thanks for everything!! Hague Fire department appreciates support To the Times of Ti: On Thursday, Aug. 7. the Emps of Silver Bay staged their annual musical to benefit the Hague Volunteer Fire Dept. The show, "Nunsense" playing to a nearly full house, was a great choice. It was very funny, and one of our members had a major role. Thanks again to Silver Bay and its' EMPs for a very generous effort. On Aug. 7 we hosted our annual Steak Roast at the Pavilion. The weather cooperated and we had a good turnout of both local and seasonal folks. As usual, the food was more than abundant. Raffles ran all day long, and just about everyone went home with a prize. As was mentioned in our last edition, part of the proceeds of this event will go to assist member Bob Rafferty with hospital expenses. Thanks one and all for your support of this annual event. A fundraiser Pig Roast in support of the Jason Laundree Memorial Training Fund will be held Sept. 11 at the Fire House. Watch for details. In July there were 37 fire calls using 155 man hours and 22 ambulance calls using 212.5 man hours. One of those fires was the total loss off the West Homestead, over a century old. Our Chief, Ray Mury was injured and hospitalized briefly from fighting the fire. He's fine. Since the Velo Grande Toure, it seems like everyone with a bicycle has taken to the roads, so lets keep an eye out for them. Joe McCranels Information Officer Hague Volunteer Fire Dept.
DEC’s Lake George island trash cleanup is essential! To the Times of Ti: The Lake George Association is concerned about the decision made by the Department of Environmental Conservation to discontinue retrieving garbage from collection centers on the Lake George islands. We urge the DEC to reconsider this decision and ask local citizens who love Lake George to join us in finding a better solution. Expecting our natural resources to bear the burden of cost cutting is fiscally irresponsible. At the LGA, we believe that the cost of cleaning up this problem will be higher than preventing it from happening in the first place. Alternative solutions could result from a dialogue with lake users. The LGA has considerable experience on the lake and a deep understanding of boating, recreation and water quality. Given the opportunity to discuss the situation with the DEC, we could help find a solution that continues to protect Lake George and the water we use for drinking, swimming, fishing and boating. While the “carry in - carry out” policy is ideal in theory, trash finds its way into the lake regardless of policies. One isolated example: after Log Bay Day 2010, the LGA hauled away several large bags of trash. Even conscientious lake users need a convenient way to dispose of trash. It is considerably easier to empty trash at a central collection point than to clean up wind-blown garbage, especially when it has left an island and gone on to desecrate the lake. To allow trash to enter Lake George — after generations of exemplary stewardship by DEC staff — would be shameful. C. Walter Lender Executive Director Lake George Association

Personnel leading the campaign ask the public to bring school supplies to any TFCU branch or ATM site for collection. TFCU will donate supplies collected at each site to the schools in closest proximity to that location, including: Ticonderoga Central School, St. Mary's School, Putnam Central School, Crown Point Central School, Moriah Central School, Westport Central School, Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School and Schroon Lake Central School. “This is a need that we recognized in our area and felt that it was our place to do something about it,” said Greg Johnson, president and CEO of Ticonderoga Federal Credit Union. “We are amazed at the generosity of our local people and businesses.” Supplies will be collected beginning Monday Aug. 16, through Friday, Sept. 3 at the Port Henry and Elizabethtown branches and through Saturday Sept. 4 at the Ticonderoga office. TFCU's ATM locations; at the Ticonderoga IP Mill and Schroon Lake Grand Union, will collect through Labor Day. Standard supplies such as notebooks, pencils, and crayons are always popular and appreciated. However, larger items are in high demand such as backpacks, pencil boxes, binders, and calculators. Aside from the new facilities — which McDonald said should provide a positive impact on programs — students will see little else change this year. Still uncertain, however, is how the changes to grade 3-8 math and English assessment tests enacted recently by the state Board of Regents will affect curriculum, McDonald said. Known as “cut scores,” the tests rank students on a scale of one to four and the results are used to determine which students need intervention services to prepare them for col-

However, you may be surprised to learn that the single and least known factor which may have the most impact on your insurance rates isn’t mentioned above. The single factor that may have the most impact on auto and homeowner rates is your “credit score”.

Insurance actuaries who set insurance rates have determined credit score is a reliable indicator of the likelihood of claims. The higher and more favorable your credit score, the less likely you are to have a claim. The higher and more favorable your credit score, the lower your insurance rates. Glens Falls National earns 5-Star rating TICONDEROGA — Glens Falls National Bank & Trust Co., known as one of the nation’s strongest banks, has earned BauerFinancial’s highest 5-Star Superior rating for strength and stability. The past few years have been difficult for the banking industry and the fact that Glens Falls National Bank & Trust Co. continues to excel in such areas as capital adequacy, delinquent loan levels and profitability, clearly indicates it is one of the strongest banks in the country. In addition, Glens Falls National has earned this top 5-Star rating for 13 straight quarters. Karen L. SILVER BAY — Monday Aug. 2, state Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward spoke at Silver Bay YMCA, discussing political ethics and our perception versus how it plays out in reality within the political arena. More than 40 people from Silver Bay and the community attended the lecture titled “Political Ethics in Government.” Sayward represents the 113th Assembly District, which includes most all of Essex County, Hamilton County, Warren County and six towns in Saratoga County — Corinth, Day, Edinburg, Hadley, Moreau and Providence. “It was a pleasure to be a guest at the lecture series at Silver Bay to discuss ethics in government,” Sayward said, noting that the participants were attentive and appreciated the candid conversations. “It is with open and direct dialogue that we can accomplish much-needed reform in government, she added. “Many thanks to Silver Bay for holding this lecture.” Silver Bay YMCA provides programs for local school children, supports local government and community organizations, and provides community members with financial assistance, as well as their programs for visitors from afar. The YMCA focuses their work in three key areas: Youth Development, Healthy Living, & Social Responsibility.

County supervisors overwhelmingly endorsed two local laws Monday adopting the retirement incentives for employees who don’t meet typical retirement standards. State lawmakers approved the two incentive packages earlier this year. Essex County Manager Dan Palmer said if each of the 39 employees who have expressed interest in the buyouts accepts the package, it would mean roughly a $3 million savings for the county over the next five years. “Under the retirement incentive itself there would be about 16 positions that would be eliminated,” he said. “That’s ultimately where the savings comes from — elimination of positions.” More than 30 employees have expressed interest in the more lucrative “Part A” incentive, which is designed for municipal and school employees who are five years short of the typical retirement requirements.
The state requires a 50 percent savings over two years for the part-A plan to be enacted in a local municipality or school district. In order to meet this goal, Palmer is proposing the outright elimination of 16 positions that would be vacated by the incentive package. The other openings would likely be filled through internal promotion or the hiring of cheaper, youthful labor. Beyond the 16 positions on the chopping block, Palmer is also proposing the elimination of 15 other positions at the county-owned Horace Nye Nursing Home and the county fish hatchery. “Those 15 that will be in that budget will depend on if we contract the kitchen or not, and the board hasn’t decided on that yet,” he said. “These 16 (positions) we would be sure of if they all take the incentive.” While supervisors mull the future of Horace Nye, Palmer is proposing outsourcing its kitchen facility to private enterprise. Last spring, public employee unions declined to renegotiate contracted 4 percent raises with the cashstrapped county, which is expected to experience a budget shortfall $7 of million next year. In response, county officials are planning on freezing the pay of all non-union labor.
Boating safety course offered PLATTSBURGH — Guidelines to safe boating will be offered at two special classes this month by the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Boating on Lake Champlain is a popular summer activity, but, like any other recreational sport, there can be dangers. A course called "About Boating Safely" will be offered for two evenings on Aug. 30-31 at the Old Base Marina in Plattsburgh. Certificates of completion will be awarded to participants after a brief exam. This course satisfies New York State requirements for mandatory boater education for personal watercraft (PWC) operators. The cost of the course is $30 per individual, which includes instruction and the "About Boating Safely" booklet. The course will be held two nights, from 5:30-9:30 p.m., Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 30-31. For information about registering now and directions to the Old Base Marina, contact Carl Duford at 643-0956. 55451

UNYTEA hits 1,000 members in Port Henry PORT HENRY — The Upstate New York Tea (UNYTEA) party reached its goal of 1,000 members during an organizational meeting held Aug. 11 in Port Henry. According to UNYTEA party Chairman Mark L Barie, the grassroots organization surpassed its goal of 1,000 members by Sept. 1 — just last week. At an organizational meeting in Port Henry, an additional 16 members were signed up. The one thousandth member was also one of UNYTEA’s youngest recruits. Fourteen-year-old Tommy Yakalis of Mineville was in attendance with his mother Jill. The teenager will be a freshman at Moriah Central School this fall. He recently scored a perfect 100 on his eighth-grade New York State history exams. Doug Hoffman, a G.O.P. candidate for the U.S. Congress, was a guest speaker at the meeting. Along with UNYTEA Port Henry Volunteer Coordinator Brett Thompson, Hoffman presented Yakalis with a U.S. flag, an engraved UNYTEA lapel pin and a replica of a Revolutionary War tri-corner hat. “Young Tommy and his mom are typical of the people who support UNYTEA and continue to work very hard on our behalf, said Barie, adding, “These are the people who are hurt most by the tax and spend policies of politicians in both Washington and Albany.”
Moriah From page 1 barbecue and the opening of carnival rides for children. Champ is expected to make his usual appearance, and Penelope the Clown may be on hand as well. Bands will be playing throughout the afternoon and evening, capped off by a 6-to-9 p.m. performance at the Port Henry Pier. “We hope everybody will turn out and have fun,” Woods said, “and we appreciate their continued support.”

SCHROON LAKE • TIMES OF TI - 21
Local parish answers a mission need SCHROON LAKE — For several years, the parishioners of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church have been involved in contributing to the North Country Mission of Hope which has been sending volunteers to Nicaragua. Five adult members, including their pastor Father Richard Sturtz, along with four teenaged parishioners, have worked with the poor in Chiquilistagua — a barrio near the city of Managua. Ten years ago, Sister Debbie Blow, Director of the Mission of Hope, was invited to speak to the parishioners in Schroon Lake about the work that the Plattsburgh-based group was doing to assist the needy in Nicaragua, the second poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. Since her first visit to the parish, Sister has returned each year to speak to parishioners. Each year they have responded with financial help either in providing an education for the youth who otherwise would not be able to attend school or in contributing to a program that provides a substantial meal once a day to school children in two different schools. Money also has been given to provide for the needs of Nicaraguans at several clinics offering health services, a home for the disabled, an orphanage and programs for some families who are forced to seek livelihood scrounging in the Managua city dump. When Sister visited the parish this July parishioners donated over $10,000 to assist in the completion of a compound which will be the permanent home of the Mission of Hope in Chiquilistagua where local people will be available daily to assist their neighbors who come for assistance. In February, the parishioners of Saint Joseph’s Church in Olmstedville, which is also served by Father Sturtz as pastor, provided funds for a home shelter for a needy family. When two of the members of Our Lady of Lourdes arrived in Nicaragua later this month they will be present for the building of four home shelters financed by fellow parishioners back home.
Parishioners of Our Lady of Lourdes gather outside the church to give to Sister Debbie Blow a check for the construction of four home shelters to be constructed for families in Nicaragua.

including the presence of rubble rather than solid ground at the site of the new gymnasium and the discovery of asbestos, the project is now several months behind schedule. Upon completion of the initial phase of construction, a new gymnasium will be built as well as a renovated auditorium. Blair is confident in a projected completion date of mid-February. “The crews are working as fast as they can and I do not doubt that will will reach our completion goal and be at full occupancy by February,” he said. The proposed projects, approved by voters in June of 2006 ,includes a $13.4 million upgrade of the existing school building and a separate $1.3 million conversion of the current combination gymnasium/auditorium into an auditorium. The completed project will include new and updated windows, new bell, alarm and clock systems, five new classrooms, new bathrooms, an energy efficiency air and heat system, and replacement of boilers and internet accessibility. Schroon Lake’s last building project was conducted in 1980 and included new windows and asbestos removal. “We need to strive to be as current as we possibly can in this day and age of education and advancement,” Blair said. The Schroon Lake community has been curious about the construction taking place on campus and is anxious to see the project approach completion. “You have to tear down before you can rebuild and this community understands that,” said Blair. “I think we are all excited to see the project finished.” Blair foresees no interruption of sports or class schedules because of construction and reports that the project remains on budget despite the unplanned setbacks. A professional cleaning crew will be working on the building during the next two weeks to prepare it for the return of students Sept. 8.

Abdominal pain - when to seek care Most abdominal pain is more of an annoyance than a serious medical condition. However, there are times when your condition may indicate the presence of a more serious health problem. Seek medical attention if you have any of the following symptoms:
Diarrhea • If you have diarrhea that lasts longer than one week • If you become dehydrated - symptoms include little or no urination, weakness or dizziness, and an excessively dry mouth • If stools are bloody • If you have a fever of 101.5 degrees F or higher with diarrhea
Constipation • If stools are thin and pencil like (can indicate the presence of a tumor in the lower bowel) • If constipation lasts longer than three weeks • If stools are bloody • If you are reliant on laxatives for bowel movements
Gas • If your gas is accompanied by crushing or squeezing chest pain (possible sign of a heart attack) • If gas is associated with pain that spreads to the upper abdomen, back, jaw, or arms (possible sign of a heart attack) • If your gas is accompanied by severe, steady pain in the upper abdomen (Taken from The Well Workplace)
Tips to get more fiber in your diet • Bulk up your breakfast. Choose a high-fiber cereal (5 or more grams per serving) or make a bowl of oatmeal and top it with nuts and fruit. • Switch to whole grains. Look for bread that lists whole-grain flour as the first ingredient. Experiment with barley, wild or brown rice, quinoa, whole wheat pasta and bulgur. • Add a vegetable. Keep a bag of frozen mixed vegetables, spinach or broccoli florets for a quick addition to any pasts sauce or rice dish. Start dinners with a tossed salad. • Don’t forget legumes. Try peas, different kinds of beans (pinto, kidney, lima, navy and garbanzo) and lentils. • Snack on fruit, nuts and seeds. Grab a piece of fruit such as an apple, pear or banana. Keep some almonds, sunflower seeds and pistachios handy. Low-fat popcorn or sliced vegetables and hummus also make a great snack.

Runner seeks encore win at Adirondack Marathon Contributed by Laura Clark denpubs@denpubs.com SCHROON LAKE — In 1997, German athlete Simone Stoeppler captured the overall woman’s title in the inaugural Adirondack Marathon. While this is certainly a praiseworthy accomplishment, some might contend that she held an advantage that day by choosing an unheralded debut event for her marathon run. But that wasn’t the case. Stoeppler considered Schroon Lake an afterthought that year — She had been focusing her efforts on the Montreal Marathon, and when the race was cancelled, folks there suggested Schroon Lake as a backup. Stoeppler was mentally and physically prepared for the Montreal course, but like many other disappointed runners, she turned her attention to the Adirondack Marathon. The 1997 win wasn’t a shoe-in, as the roster of runners was quite competitive — and the competition heats up each year, which underscores Stoeppler ’s accomplishment. Despite the footrace’s increasingly stellar field of entrants, including Nikki Kimball, originally of Elizabethtown and three times Female Ultra-Runner of the Year, Stoeppler ’s 3:04:08 record time still stands. Unlike many winners who feel compelled to defend their record in successive years, Stoeppler preferred to let hers stand on its own — until now. Stoeppler is scheduled to return to the 14th annual Adirondack Marathon on Sept.
25 to defend her title. During the intervening years, Stoeppler has concentrated on ultramarathons while not working at her job as an employee of Hessischer Rundfunk, a public service broadcaster headquartered in Frankfurt. She recently insisted she has no illusions of another win. “I do not expect to break my record after so many years,” she said. “I think you get a bit slower when running the longer distances, but I will try to speed up a bit, so we will see.” Stoeppler ’s definition of slow is relative. She has started for the 100K German National Team 18 times at the World Cups and European Championships. In the process, she won six silver and five bronze medals. In preparation for the infamous Schroon Lake hills in the Adirondack Marathon, Stoeppler plans on competing in a July marathon in the Swiss Alps. After that experience, the Adirondack venue should be a piece of cake, observers say. Like many runners participating in the Adirondack Marathon over the years, Simone has been impressed with the friendliness and helpfulness of the local residents who go out of their way to ensure that each runner has a truly memorable experience. So much so that this time around she is inviting her parents to accompany her for their 50th wedding anniversary. Marathon sponsors said they’re honored that Simone has chosen Schroon Lake for their first introduction to America and are excited to see her go the distance one more time.
During a recent 100k World Cup footrace in Japan, award-winning German runner Simone Stoeppler (left) gets a hug from runner Nikki Kimball of Elizabethtown, honored three times as Female Ultra Runner of the Year. Stoeppler is scheduled to race in the upcoming 2010 Adirondack Marathon, set for Sept. 25 in Schroon Lake.
Sportsmanship shines at Schroon Lake Tennis Tourney SCHROON LAKE — This year ’s Schroon Lake Tennis Tournament ended Aug. 7 with blue skies, some great finals matches, and an awesome potluck picnic and awards ceremony at the town tennis courts. Twenty-three doubles teams and 14 singles players competed during the six-day event, with players as young as 10 and as young-at-heart as 78. Competitors came from at least five different states, and competed in categories from 12 and under singles through century doubles. The best part of the tournament was watching the children’s matches. All of the youth demonstrated good sportsmanship, frequently complimenting their opponents’ best shots, making fair line calls, keeping score well and discussing differences amicably. When some of the children finished their matches, they watched their peers still playing and cheered for both sides. Comments like, “Great shot! Nice try! Good effort!” were made frequently by the children. Sporting events are not just about winning and getting trophies. They are about learning how to put forth a strong effort, play hard and fairly, and win or lose graciously. They are about shaking hands with your opponent willingly at the end of the competition, and making friends. The youngsters at the Schroon Lake Tennis Tournament demonstrated all of these qualities, and each one was presented with a special sportsmanship award. These fine young people have a great start on growing up to be good sports in the game of life. The winners of the sportsmanship award were Josh Dion, David Klee, Henry Klee, Andre Megliola, Keith Ratchford, Peter and Tim Salit, and Levi Williams.
Awards for tournament play in the various events were presented to the following people: Singles: Age 12 and younger — Champion Levi Williams, Finalist Andre Megliola; Age 16 and younger—Champion Josh Dion, Finalist David Klee; Women—Champion Ellie George, Finalist Caroline Baldwin; Men—Champion Scott George, Finalist Luc Rogers. Doubles: Age 12 and younger—Champions Peter and Tim Salit, Finalists Henry Klee and Levi Williams; Women—Champions Judy Osborne and MaryAnne White, Finalists Barbara Storace and Janet Van Ross; Men—Champions Scott George and Luc Rogers, Finalists Gene Fader and Jim Jennison; Mixed—Champions Scott and Ellie George, Finalists Judy Osborne and Matt Riggins; Century—Champions Judy Osborne and Frank Smith, Finalists Don Hallock and Al Relyea. Held for over 35 years, the Schroon Lake Tennis Tournament fosters fun, good tennis, friendship, and sportsmanship. It is held during the first week of August each year at the Schroon Lake town tennis courts. Players of all ages and abilities are welcome, so consider joining us next year and be a part of this summer tradition.

LG Dinner Theatre has a hit with ‘Our Son’s Wedding’ By Thom Randall thom@denpubs.com LAKE GEORGE — The Lake George Dinner Theatre has established a reputation as a showcase for feel-good drama, clever mysteries and light comedy. This year, it may have taken its offerings to a new level with a cohesive combination of seasoned cast, a smart script and tight direction in “Our Son’s Wedding.” The Theatre’s production for 2010 follows a couple — a plumber from the Bronx and his strong-willed wife — preparing to attend the nuptials of their son — to another man. Veteran actor Paul D’Amato, famous as the character “Dr. Hook” in the hit movie Slapshot, plays Angelo Lo Presto, a plumber with traditional values who’s wrestling with the concept of his son’s homosexuality and its consequences. His wife Mary Lo Presto, is portrayed by Marina Re, who’s equally accomplished as an actress. While early on, Angelo obsesses over the wedding plans sparking arguments with Mary over one aspect or another of the nuptials. Through the play, the emotional tension builds as they examine their own relationships with their son, explore aspects of their own bond, and the nature of their expectations for others.
Angelo’s bullish side recedes, and his latent sensibilities emerge as he faces his own vulnerability, through a process in which details emerge about his own marriage to Mary. The result is that through exploring the contemporary subject of conflicting attitudes toward gay marriage, the play presents a compelling venue for the audience to look at both comedic and poignant universal aspects of human nature. And Our Son’s Wedding takes its audience through this emotion-charged territory very successfully, without lapsing into easy or condescending stereotypes. Kudos also go to Theatre owner Terry Rabine, who produced and directed the show, for keeping the dialogue and stage action electric yet natural. The acting is as superb as D’Amato’s and Re’s credentials promise, and their onstage banter is particularly spirited and spontaneous — perhaps because they’re partners in real life. The script is loaded with comic quips that couples relate intimately to — the lively comments about the characters amongst diners during the intermission at nearby tables, and their shared laughter, provided proof of it. The Lake George Dinner Theatre’s food has always been good — the theatre is located in the recently upgraded Lake George Holi-
Seasoned actors Paul D’Amato and Marina Re — partners in real life — exchange lively banter as they portray a sparring couple in Lake George Dinner Theatre’s production of ‘Our Son’s Wedding,’ which runs through mid-October. day Inn Resort — and this year is no exception. Reputed to be the smallest professional dinner theater in the nation with 145 seats, it provides an intimate atmosphere where the audience experiences emotion viscerally, and actors feed off the energy and response
of the audience. This is particularly true with Our Son’s Wedding, which offers a stimulating and enjoyable evening, and continues a recent tradition with Terry Rabine and his dinner theater, of exploring new dramatic territory. Performances are offered
Wednesday through Saturday nights with dinner seating beginning at 6:30. Matinees are scheduled every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with special Saturday matinee luncheons on Aug. 21, Sept.18 & 25 and October 9. Reservations are request-

Geese go away, and don’t come back another day
D
espite rampant rumors that the state of New York had plans to implement a massive effort to reduce the state’s burgeoning population of Canada geese, the NYSDEC wants the public to know that there is no such plan. In an article in the New York Times, dated July 23, it was reported that the state intended to eliminate several hundred thousand geese, in an effort to bring the population under control. Information that was initially provided by the New York Times was later used by numerous media sources in followup articles, including one of my own. As a result, NYSDEC wildlife staffers have been forced to respond to a barrage of calls and e-mails about the false stories concerning efforts to eliminate Canada geese. In the village of Saranac Lake, there has been an ongoing battle to control Canada geese along the shorefront of Lake Flower for several years. A family of geese settled on the lake almost a decade ago, and over the years, their numbers continued to grow. The goose problem is most noticeable in and around the state boat launch in the center of the village, where the park’s extensive lawn has been regularly soiled with their droppings. It has been difficult to walk anywhere near the waterfront without steeping in goose poop, which is extremely slippery after a rain or in the morning dew. Numerous efforts to eradicate the geese have been attempted by both the village and the DEC, including a major goose roundup, netting and relocation campaign. The village also attempted to scare the birds away by placing lifesize, wooden silhouettes of dogs along the shoreline. Neither of these methods had any affect on the geese or their droppings. The captured geese, which are known to imprint on a specific body of water, returned shortly after their capture and removal. And, they often could be found basking in the shadow of the large black, plywood silhouettes. Finally, after several years of struggling with the problem, the village has installed a simple strip of orange surveyor ’s tape along the entire shoreline. The tape is strung between survey stakes, about a foot off the ground, and the previously mowed lawn is now left to grow about a foot high, in a small strip along the shoreline.
Following the installation of the tape, and the tall grass that grew up along the shoreline in just a few weeks, the boat launch and adjacent town park appears to be amazingly clear of goose poop. The grassy strip has become a proverbial ‘line in the sand.’ The geese simply won’t cross it. There are many other communities across the Adirondacks that may want to consider similar efforts. The cost is minimal and the public relations benefits are considerable with no trapping, no relocation and no shooting necessary to ensure that there is no goose poop underfoot.
A New Season Begins Although I am still stuck in the throes of a very productive fishing season, I’ve recently been getting an itch for the hunt. Two weeks ago, I went into hunting camp with a few friends, to buck up some firewood and take care of a few other items necessary for the upcoming season. While we got a lot of work done, the day ended early when the handle of the splitting maul broke, much to everyone’s relief. Our small cabin was relatively free of mice, and other pests, but it was nearly hidden by a huge field of overgrown ferns and berry bushes. In the past few weeks, I have put in several afternoons on the range, sharpening my skills with both bow and rifle. During this timeframe, I have also found a cool tint in the morning air. It’s probably just wishful thinking, but it is a tint just the same and it signals adventures to be had in the months to come. I’ve also been noticing that a few trees are beginning to turn, primarily along the lakeshore or high upon the peaks. Although it’s still far too soon to think about fall, it never hurts to dream and it’s always fun to prepare. The new season begins is less than six weeks. The realization comes with news that the 2010-2011 hunt-
Although hunting season is a little over a month away, this nice bass taken by Owen Robinson of Philadelphia should serve as a reminder that fishing season is still very much in the present. ing, fishing, and trapping licenses and Deer Management Permits (DMPs) became available for purchase beginning Monday, Aug. 16. Licenses and permits can be purchased at any of the 1,500 license sales outlets statewide. Sporting licenses are also available via the internet at www.dec.ny.gov. Sporting licenses are valid beginning Oct. 1 through Sept. 30, 2011. Anglers should take note that the 2010 fishing license expires Sept. 30, a full two weeks before the close of trout season. Annually, the DEC issues 1.8 million sporting licenses annually through 1,500 license issuing agents. The department also coordinates a hunter education program with 3,300 volunteer hunter safety instructors providing nearly 40,000 certificates to students every year.
