By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com PORT HENRY — For decades Rita Collins has preferred to stay out of the limelight while helping her community. That’s about to change. Collins has been selected grand marshal of the 119th Labor Day celebration in Port Henry. “She’s contributed many years, quietly behind the scenes, to our community,” said Jack Woods, Moriah Chamber of ComRita Collins merce president. “It’s time to recognize her. She’s just a good, all-around person. Moriah’s lucky to have people like Rita.” The annual Labor Day celebration will be held Sept. 5 and 6. The parade will be at 1 p.m. Sunday. “I’m still trying to figure out how it happened,” Collins said of her selection as grand marshal. “It’s quite an honor, although I don’t know what I did to deserve it.”

Painting helps local artist deliver hope Crown Point woman struggles with illness CROWN POINT — On the far end of the Furnace Road in Crown Point lives a woman who paints, giving hope to those who struggle and have faced adversity. Trish Buell has been painting since her diagnosis of scleroderma and paints from inspiration. “I paint what I see in my head,” said Buell.

Buell gravitates to the Native Americans where her walls show evidence with the many paintings hanging there. Wolves, cougars, horses, Native Americans, spirits and night sky paintings with the moon are often her choice for depicting a disappearing era. “I am sometimes inspired to paint pictures through what I think is a deeper connection to the spirit world,” said Buell. Ti man charged with assault TICONDEROGA — A Ticonderoga man has been charged with assaulting his 70-year-old grandmother. Christopher M. Jalonack, 21, Route 9N, Ticonderoga, was charged with multiple felonies Aug. 13 and was arraigned before Schroon Town Justice Jean Strothenke. He was sent to jail when he couldn’t pay $15,000 cash bail or $30,000 bail bond. Ticonderoga police were called to the home Jalonack

shares with his grandmother at 10:55 p.m., where he was also fighting with a 29year-old woman and a 19year-old woman. Police did not release the names of the victims. During the disagreement, Jalonack allegedly beat his grandmother, struck the 29year-old woman in the face with a bottle, smashed a telephone and kicked out the rear window of a police car as he was being arrested. The grandmother and 29-

(Ron & Doris) 8/22/09

year-old woman were transported to Moses-Ludington Hospital where they treated and released. Jalonack was charged with three felonies: seconddegree assault causing injury to an elderly person, second-degree assault and third-degree criminal mischief, for kicking out the window, which caused $1,100 damage. He was also charged with the violation of fourth-degree criminal mischief for smashing the telephone to prevent police from being called.

PRIDE event

Ducks swim to win TICONDEROGA — The seventh annual Duck Race sponsored by PRIDE on July 25 went swimmingly well. Perhaps due to the fine weather, perhaps because of the special events occurring that day, scores of people were eager to pay for baby ducks to join in the spill from the falls of the La Chute River. Apparently, the volume of water was just right because all ducks made it to the finish. First prize of $150 went to Greg Fitzgerald, second prize of $100 was won by Robin Nowc and third prize won by Gabriel Vigliotti. The winners of the Decorated Decoy Contest were — Creativity: first place to Emeralds, second place SW&B, third place Tony’s Sports; Costume: first place to Community Bank, second place to Sunshine Laundry, third place to Ti Arts; Theme: first place to Martin Agencies, second place to Pat Ida CPA, third place to Glens Falls National Bank. Honorable mention went to Burleigh’s Luncheonette, Country Florist, Gunning Agency, Montcalm Manor, Mountain Time Furniture, NAPA, Ticonderoga Town Clerk and Christopher Chevrolet. “There were many others who donated but did not decorate a duck,” said Cynthia Fairbanks of PRIDE. “Thanks to Adam’s Rib, Agency Insurance, Adirondack Optical, Aubuchon Hardware, Brannock Properties, Circle Court Motel, Curves, Bob Dedrick, House of Pizza, Prevention Team, Sugar and Spice, Ti Pi Restaurant, Verizon Wireless, MV Designs, Wicker Ford, and the Wagon Wheel. “PRIDE thanks the community and visitors for their support in the annual fundraiser to support emergency home repairs for qualified homeowners in the town of Ticonderoga,” she said.

Ti Festival Guild to tour area homes TICONDEROGA — The biennial Tour of Homes of the Ticonderoga Festival Guild will be held on Sunday, Sept. 13, from 2 to 5 p.m. Six homes, new and historic, in Putnam Station will be open for visiting. The tour will begin in the historic one-room schoolhouse in front of the Putnam Presbyterian Church, where those on the tour may turn in their tickets and receive maps and directions to

the houses. Names of houses on the tour are not released in advance for security reasons. Each home will feature live music and flowers contributed by area residents. From 4 to 5 p.m. a reception buffet will be set up in the garden of the Presbyterian Church, weather permitting, or inside in case of rain. The house tours are presented every

two years by the Ti Festival Guild, alternating with a progressive dinner as a fund raiser. The first tour was in 1996 and this is the seventh to be held in the Ticonderoga area. Tickets are $20 a person and are available now by calling the Festival Guild at 585-6716 or by contacting members of the board of directors.

Flippancy Fest again a success To The Times of Ti: The sixth annual Flippancy Fest – John Costello Memorial Coffeehouse was held at the Hague Beach (thanks to the town of Hague for the beautiful venue) on July 24 and was blessed with good weather, great performers, a wonderful audience and a true feeling of John’s spirit. John’s brother, Tavish, and his “Maw and Paw,” Karen and Tim, would like to sincerely thank Tom Denno Jr. for helping organize this

year ’s event and wish him good fortune in life as he receives the John Costello Memorial Scholarship for 2009. We also give our thanks to Silver Bay YMCA for sponsoring the Scholarship Fund, Carolyn Close for her valuable assistance and Bobbi Jean Fish for preparing the delicious food and beverages. Thank you to all who had a hand in the preparations. What makes Flippancy Fest each year is the awesome talent that fills our senses with feelings. The drum-

ming, the poetry, the guitars and mandolins, the songs make us all more alive. Special thanks to all the performers. We greatly appreciate all the donations to The John Costello Memorial Scholarship Fund, a life enrichment award given yearly. Donations can be directed to Silver Bay YMCA of the Adirondacks, Silver Bay 12874.

Hague firefighters receive aid To the Times of Ti: Recently, the Hague Fire Volunteer Fire Department has found itself the beneficiary of some generous gifts which it wishes to share with the public which it serves. The Ticonderoga Area Kiwanis Club annually directs a major emphasis award in the amount off $1,000 to the Hague community. We are grateful to be chosen as this year ’s recipient. The award will be used toward the purchase of new light weight turn out gear for fighting brush and forest fires. It is also the time of year when we say thank you to all the talented Emps at Silver Bay for staging another wonderful musical for the benefit of our department. This year ’s show, My Favorite Year, capably directed by Mike McCord, packed the auditorium on opening night and netted the department $2,520. Thanks again to cast and crew for a great effort. Last, but not least, kudos to our own members who worked so hard and the public for their support in making our recent steak roast another success Due to a computer glitz, this month’s logistics will be rolled in with the next issue. With all the bad weather early this summer, it looks like all of us are trying to cram a summer of fun into the two weeks we have left. The sky is not falling and the end is not near (http://www.religioustolerance.org/end_wrl1.htm). America regardless of the rantings/ravings/warnings/prophecies of an angry, vocal minority of fringedwelling lunatics more upset about a black man being in the White House than the change/polices that he ran on, promised to implement, and is now moving forward on. 'Old news' flash: elections have consequences and we won by 10 million popular votes and 192 electoral votes. My advice to “regular” Americans? Don’t pay these wild-eyed naysayers/false prophets much heed. They have a track record of being very wrong, over a very long period of time about 'the sky falling' and/or the end is near )http://www.religioustolerance.org/end_wrl1.htm). My advice for the angry, radicalized minority? Please, spare us your vitriolic jibber jabber and instead, take a few deep breaths. You've got at least 3.5-7.5 years more of being out of power (at a minimum) so... stock up on provisions (for those of you who have finally exhausted their last sky is falling/ end is near cache of Y2K stockpiles) it can’t hurt the economy and if it keeps you occupied, all the better. Twice the Fun: Double-Coupon Days Last week, I mentioned that pairing dollar coupons with dollar sales at the grocery store are one of my favorite ways to get items for free. Another easy way? Double-coupon days. Coupon "doubling" occurs when a store matches a coupon's face value and passes the added bonus savings on to you, the shopper. Here's how it works. When you go to the checkout and hand the cashier a 50-cent coupon during double-coupon days, the cashier scans it and the cash register automatically doubles the value of that coupon to $1. You receive a dollar savings on one item with one 50-cent coupon. Grocery stores handle double-coupon promotions differently. Some stores double coupons up to a certain amount every day. Others offer double-coupon promotions on certain days of the week or certain weeks of the month. Still others offer double coupons on some days and triple coupons on others. During a triple-coupon promotion, a 50-cent coupon is worth $1.50. These sales are definitely worth checking out because stores that double coupons make it very easy for shoppers to get groceries for free or at big discounts. However, in my experience, many stores have specific rules for the ways they double coupons. You'll want to refer to your store's coupon policy to determine exactly how your store handles these promotions. Visit the store's Web site for the information or ask for a

Coupon Queen

By Jill Cataldo

copy of the guidelines next time you're shopping. For example, one national grocery store chain will double all coupons worth up to 55 cents every day of the week. Another national chain doubles coupons up to $2 each, but they only run this promotion for one week each month. Some stores will double Internet coupons, others won't. It's important to find out exactly how your store handles doubles so that you aren't disappointed at the checkout. Let's go back to our example from last week, the "dollar sale" at the grocery

store. Our store has many items on sale for $1, including cans of soup, toothbrushes and bags of frozen vegetables. Our store also doubles coupons up to $1 in value. How can we get things for free? Well, any coupon with a value of 50 cents will automatically be doubled to $1. I have a 50cent coupon for the soup, a 55-cent coupon for the toothbrush and a 75-cent coupon for the vegetables. With those three coupons doubling in value, I'll be taking home a can of soup, a toothbrush, and a bag of frozen veggies all free. It's important to note, too, that coupons typically do not double over the value of the item. This is different from the way some stores handle "overage," which is when your coupon's value exceeds the cost of the item you're buying. At many stores, using a $1 coupon on an item that is on sale for 75 cents will not only give you that item for free, it will also take an extra quarter off your total purchase. This is the overage value that was left over

after your $1 coupon paid for your 75-cent item. However, when a store offers double coupons, they're matching the coupon's value out of their own pocket. So, using a $2 coupon on a $3.79 bottle of spray cleaner will get you the cleaner for free, as the coupon doubles up to $4, but it will not give you that extra 21 cents in overage. However, you'll be taking items home for free, and who doesn't love that? Now, don't fret if you no stores double coupons in your area. Coupon doubling tends to be a regional phenomenon. Here in the Chicago area, none of our grocery stores double coupons, ever! The closest stores that do are 45 minutes from where I live. (And yes, I take "coupon field trips" to them on occasion.) But I do the bulk of my weekly shopping in a store that does not double coupons, and I still manage to cut my bill by half or better with coupons each week.

Moriah From page 1 Collins is the owner of the Collins Lounge and Motel in Port Henry. Her husband, Bernard, purchased the business in 1946. After their marriage in 1950, “Ben” and Rita operated it together until his death in 1969. Rita has continued the business since, raising four children — Deborah, Terry, Kathleen and Patricia. “I closed (the business) for a week; I didn’t know what I would do,” Collins said of her husband’s death. “I talked to the kids and they agreed to pitch in, so I re-opened and have stayed open ever since.” Born in Mineville in 1925, Collins is a life-long resident of Moriah. She has nine grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren. Wood noted Collins is a charter member of the Moriah Chamber of

Commerce and has been active in planning and promoting past Labor Day and Champ Day celebrations. “I remember I went to the very first (chamber) meeting,” Collins recalled. “It was way, way back; I can’t even remember when it was.” Whenever it was, Collins has been there ever since. “We’re very proud to have Rita as our grand marshal,” Woods said. Collins graduated from Mineville High School in 1943 and went to work as manager of the federal Grover Hills Housing Project. This year ’s Port Henry Labor Day will celebrate the Lake Champlain quadricentennial. Characters portraying Samuel de Champlain, who discovered Lake Champlain 400 years ago, and the mythical lake monster Champ will take part in the two -day affair to mark the unofficial end of summer. Activities will begin Saturday, Sept.

5, with a concert by the Main Street Band 6-9 p.m. at Port Henry beach. During the performance there will be children’s games. At 9 p.m. there will be a fireworks display. Sunday, Sept. 6, line-up for the traditional Labor Day parade will begin at noon at the Witherbee mansion. The parade will step off at 1 p.m. and proceed down Broad Street to main Street, finishing at Park Place. Jack Woods, president of the Moriah Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the celebration, said the parade will feature floats and community groups honoring the Moriah bicentennial. Following the parade there will be a chicken barbecue on Church Street along with children’s rides, games and food. The Fritz Polka Band will perform on Church Street at 3 p.m. and the In-Laws will entertain at 6 p.m. 35180

cause to keep her going. Buell found her therapy in painting. Through her connection to the spiritual world, she made the Native Americans the focus of her art. With her hands crippled, Buell has found a way to hold the brush and project her thoughts on canvas in bright colors and nighttime visions. “I want people to have hope and know that for every tragedy, sentence and prognosis, they can live what time they have giving

to others, taking their minds off themselves,” said Buell. Buell believes her painting has been a way of expressing herself while giving hope not just to herself, but to others. “I am thankful for my life events. If things had been different I wouldn’t be with my soul mate (husband) Dick,” said Buell. Buell continues to paint and add to her collection. She sells some paintings and enjoys her life under the shadow of Owl Pate Mountain.

Scleroderma is a chronic auto-immune disease that is characterized by fibrosis (or hardening), vascular alterations, and auto-antibodies. There are no treatments for the disease and it can often be fatal when it attacks the organs of the body. With her hands starting to cripple, Buell’s health also began to fail and she was hospitalized. Her future was grim and her doctor gave her two years to live. Her kidneys had shut down and she was placed on dialysis. “I was in a coma for a week and when I woke up, I remembered a dream I had and I was determined I would recover from this debilitating disease,” stated Buell. Schroon event reaches Afghanistan SCHROON LAKE — American troops serving in Afghanistan will have an opportunity to compete in this fall’s Adirondack Marathon. Service personnel will have a chance to run the “Adirondack Marathon shadow race.” Those that run in Afghanistan will receive Adirondack Marathon Distance Festival windshirts and marathon finisher medals. “This is another way that our military serving overseas can feel connected to home,” Joel Friedman of the race committee said. The 13th running of the Adirondack Marathon Distance Festival will be Sept. 19 and 20 in Schroon Lake and Chestertown. It will feature 5 and 10kilometer road races in Chestertown on Saturday with a marathon, halfmarathon and two-person marathon relay in Schroon Lake on Sunday. The half marathon has been sold out since June with over 500 runners. The full marathon and relay races are still growing in numbers. People wishing to run a half marathon can still do so as part of full marathon relay team. People seeking partners can go to the event website. New this year will be a children’s 1k

Fun Run in Schroon Lake on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. The marathon partners with Teamin-Training runners who have raised over $500,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The race also works with Team Hole in the Wall, the world’s largest family of camps for children with life-threatening diseases and raises funds. And the race also awards two $1,500 college scholarships to local schools, while the Helper ’s Fund 5 and 10K races assist individuals and families dealing with catastrophic circumstances. “This year, we are holding a 50/50 raffle to help raise funds for these events,” Friedman said. “Tickets may be bought up until Race Day from AMDF Team Leaders, or at Friedman Realty or Morningstar Bistro in Schroon Lake. You can order tickets by email at info@adirondackmarathon.org. Tickets are also available at the North Warren Chamber of Commerce. “A big thank you to the hundreds of volunteers who help us on race day and throughout the year,” Friedman said. “We couldn’t have this wonderful event without you! ‘Departed’ to visit Ceremony marks construction in Schroon Lake By Fred Herbst

fred@denpubs.com

SCHROON LAKE — The Schroon-North Hudson Historical Society will present Dessert with the Departed Thursday, Aug. 27. The program, which features characters from the past along with home-made desserts and coffee, will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the Schroon Lake Boathouse Theatre — originally the Bogle Hotel boathouse. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the museum Friday through Sunday or by calling 532-0533. Ticket holders will experience an 1896 Steamboat saga. The cast of characters will include Charles Bogle, boat master; Lucy Bohrmann, steamboat passenger and first woman about to climb Mt. Marcy; Elizabeth Finch, climbing companion and her maid, Miss Jessica; Marcus Granger, tour guide, Captain Cheney or the Steamboat Effingham and surprise impersonators.

Free community concert set SCHROON LAKE — The Schroon Lake Arts Council will sponsor a free concert Sunday, Aug. 30, at the Schroon Lake Boathouse featuring The Steven L. Smith band from Brant Lake. The concert will begin at 8 p.m. immediately following the council’s 2009 annual meeting which begins at 7p.m. The free concert is being offered as the council’s way of saying thank you to its members and sponsors as well as the whole community, who have been so supportive of efforts to bring the performing arts to the area. Everyone is invited to attend and light refreshments will be served. The Smith band features musician, Steven L. Smith, a native of the Adirondacks in upstate New York. Smith’s original acoustic based music will be accompanied by friends and fellow musicians Bob Gagnon on guitar, Bob Peck on base and guest, Aldo Troini playing mandolin. More information on the Smith band can be found by calling Smith at 494-3514 or by visiting his website at WWW.SLSMITH.INFO More information on the Schroon Lake Arts Council is available at www.schroonlakearts.com

SCHROON LAKE — Although work has already commenced, a formal groundbreaking ceremony for the Schroon Lake Central School building project was recently held. Summer school students, school officials and community leaders took part in the event, which marks the first major building project at the school in nearly 50 years. The project will expand and renovate the existing school building. Technically, the work is two projects — a $13.4 million upgrade of the existing school building and a separate $1.3 million conversion of the current combination gym/auditorium into an auditorium. Voters approved both measures June 28, 2006. The first proposition totals $13,398,159. It calls for repairs to the school’s exterior, replacement of single-pane windows and doors installed in the 1960s, installation of a state-mandated storm water basin, installation of mandated fire doors, installation of safety systems, asbestos and lead containment, installation of a statemandated elevator for

The proposition also calls for construction of five new classrooms for pre-kindergarten, elementary science, special education, speech and occupational and physical therapy as well as a gymnasium and locker rooms. Current classrooms will be refurbished.

The second proposition totals $1,329,742. It calls for the current combination gym/auditorium to be converted into an auditorium with additional permanent seating, improved lighting, improved sound system and new stage rigging and curtains. The projects are eligible for 24.5 percent state aid. Schroon Lake School was constructed in 1935. There was an addition built in

1962 and in 1965 temporary classrooms were placed at the rear of the school — those “tin” classrooms are still in use. Schroon voters rejected a proposed $3.1 million project in 1989; rejected a $1 million boiler replacement project in 1990; had a 1992 building proposal die before going to vote; and rejected an $18.2 million project in 2005.

Common eye conditions in people over 50 Macular Degeneration - The most common cause of vision loss, this disease is characterized by vision loss I the center of the eye; blurred vision; straight lines looking wavy; needing more light to see. It can affect either one or both eyes. Glaucoma - The leading cause of blindness in the United States. It is characterized by gradual loss of peripheral (side) vision; difficulty driving at night; loss of contrast. It is important to get treatment for early symptoms to prevent total blindness. Cataracts - Causes clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye. Its symptoms are hazy vision; difficulty driving at night; double vision; trouble distinguishing colors; sensitivity to glare. It typically develops gradually. Through surgery, cataracts can be removed and the lens of the eye replaced by a plastic lens. Diabetic Retinopathy - Typically occurs in people with advanced diabetes and high blood sugar levels. It is caused by leaking blood vessels. Its symptoms are blurred or changing vision; difficulty reading; floaters that affect either central or peripheral vision. Estimates are that 25 percent of people with diabetes have some diabetic retinopathy, but few people develop severe vision problems. There are often no symptoms in the early stages, so people with advanced diabetes should have regular vision exams. The best prevention is maintaining stable blood sugar levels. A doctor should be seen immediately if a person has any acute or prolonged episodes like blurred vision, flashes of light, blind spots or any other symptom that affects vision. Understanding Vitamin D Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium, which keeps your bones strong. Some recent studies suggest that taking extra vitamin D can have other health benefits, but the evidence to date has been unclear. Medical experts held a conference at NIH to take a closer look at the scientific evidence on Vitamin D. They reported their conclusions in August 2008. The strongest evidence suggesting other benefits from more vitamin D is for older people. Several clinical studies found that additional vitamin D can improve bone health and prevent falls in elderly men and postmenopausal women. The experts say they don’t yet have enough information to know if extra vitamin D might help people of other ages. Scientific experts will continue to evaluate recent research to decide if current vitamin D recommendations should be revised. Talk to your doctor if you have questions about how much vitamin D you need.
