TICONDEROGA — The Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce has a new executive director. Barb Brassard took the job Sept. 21. She replaces Joe Conway, who left to take a marketing position in Glens Falls.

“We’re very pleased and excited to welcome Barb aboard as our new executive director. Her experience, diverse interests and strong background in business assistance will be immensely valuable to our membership,” said Pamela Nolan, chamber president. “We are delighted that she will be bringing her wide range of talents and warm personality to the TACC.” A Moriah native and resident, Brassard has served as the Essex County Empire Zone Program director. She first joined the program in 1993. “My goals are to work with the chamber board members

PORT HENRY — Moriah faces a very difficult budget process for 2010. Supervisor Tom Scozzafava told his town board to be prepared for tough times ahead as they prepare the 2010 town spending plan. “We’re going to be looking at a very tough budget year because of costs we have no control over,” he said. “Our revenues are down significantly and costs are up.” The tentative town budget will be submitted at a special board meeting Thursday, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m. in the town hall at Park Place in Port Henry. Scozzafava said town income from the Bulwagga Bay campground and trash transfer station is down from previous years. He also pointed out town revenue from sources such as mortgage tax are down. At the same time, he said, workers compensation is expected to increase 7-12 percent, employee health insurance will increase and town contributions to employee retirement plans will go up next year. There will also be other increases in spending such as pay increases for employees, higher energy costs and other items, he said. The 2009 Moriah budget increased local taxes 6.3 percent. It totals $3,889,725. That’s $158,317 — 4.2 percent — more than the 2008 spending plan of $3,731,408. The amount of local tax raised in the 2009 preliminary budget was $1,964,066. That’s $117,437 — 6.3 percent — more than the 2008

I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to those Republicans who supported me in the recent Primary Election. I have worked hard to serve the citizens of Essex County by reducing the budget, eliminating politics from prosecutorial decisions, and by dedicating my office to the seeking of truth. My every move is based on my desire to make our communities safe for you and your families. You, and many others, will have the opportunity to hear much more about the true facts concerning the operation of the Essex County District Attorney’s office, now, in the past, and most importantly, in the future. I am grateful for your steadfast faith in me and look forward to your continued support. Soon all the voters will have an opportunity to review the real “evidence” and make their own judgment when they vote on November 3rd. Paid for by friends to Re-Elect Julie Garcia.

Sincerely yours, Julie Garcia Essex County District Attorney

fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — Who wants to be a millionaire? Shylah (Ross) Addante does. The 2003 Ticonderoga High School graduate was a contestant on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. The episode was taped in New York City Sept. 18 and will be televised this fall. Results of the show are confidential until it airs. An appearance on a TV game show is a natural for Addante. “I’ve always been a trivia lover — and I come by it honestly,” she said. “A nightly ritual at home growing up was watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune together as a family after dinner. “When Millionaire premiered 10 years ago, I remember liking it immediately,” Addante added. “It was different than Jeopardy, more drama and way more money. I admit, I’m not an avid watcher — the show is on daily during a daytime syndication run — but, I always seem to do pretty well when I catch an episode.” Addante auditioned for the show on a whim. “The audition/selection process began in June for me when a friend from college E-mailed me a link to the Millionaire website. Under the link was one line: ‘You should try out’,” she said. “I filled it out, and within a day was scheduled for a 6 p.m. audition at ABC Studios in New York City on July 8.” The audition process was a three-part elimination. First was a written test. Those with the top scores advanced to interviews with production assistants. Those who survived that cut went on to an interview with the show’s producer. “At 5:30, I arrived at ABC Studios where I joined a line of over 100 other Millionaire hopefuls,” Addante said. “We were ushered into the testing site and everyone was given

Inter-Lakes to host flu clinic Oct. 6 vaccinations to be given at MLH TICONDEROGA — Inter-Lakes Health will host a “Seasonal Flu Shot Clinic” on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 3-7 p.m. where members of the community can come be vaccinated. The clinic will be in Moses-Ludington Hospital’s cafeteria on the lower level of the main building. No appointment is necessary. “We hope that many community members take advantage of the clinic here at Moses-Ludington Hospital. The central location should make it easy for anyone who wants a vaccine to get one,” said Michael D. Zemany, InterLakes Health’s chief operating officer. The event is one in a series of clinics being offered by the Essex County Public Health Department. The seasonal flu shot is available at

no charge for anyone from age 6 months through 18 years. The cost for adults 19 and older is $20, payable to Essex County Public Health. Anyone with Medicaid or Medicare Part B should bring their card, as the cost is covered by those plans. The seasonal flu shot does not protect against the H1N1 virus (commonly known as swine flu). A vaccine for that is not available yet, though Essex County will be scheduling public vaccination clinics when it becomes available. The county Health Department can be reached at 873-3500 or online at www.co.essex.ny.us/publichealth/ To stay healthy during flu season, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the following steps: • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you

use it. • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are also effective. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way. • Stay home if you get sick to limit contact with others to keep from infecting them. “Preparation and education are the best ways to prevent getting the flu or sharing the virus,” said Registered Nurse Jane Whitney, infection control nurse for Inter-Lakes Health. More information on the seasonal flu is available online at www.flu.gov/ More information on the H1N1 virus (swine flu) is available online at www.cdc.gov/H1N1FLU/ Inter-Lakes Health can be reached online at www.interlakeshealth.com or by calling 585-2831.

Clinics also set in Schroon, Moriah TICONDEROGA — The Essex County Public Health Department has announced its 2009 seasonal flu and pneumonia clinic schedule. All clinics are open to the public at locations throughout Essex County. Seasonal flu vaccine is $20 for adults (19 years and older) and no charge for children (6 months through 18 years); Pneumonia is $42. Medicaid or Medicare Part B cards must be presented at the clinic. People who have Medicare Part B through private insurance must pay Essex County Public Health Department for the vaccine(s) and then submit the receipt to their private insurance for reimbursement. The schedule includes: — Wednesday, Sept. 30, at the Schroon Lake fire house from 3-7 p.m.; — Thursday, Oct. 1, at the Moriah fire house from 3-7 p.m.; — Tuesday, Oct. 6, at the Moses-Ludington Hospital cafeteria in Ticonderoga; and from 3-7 p.m.; and — Thursday, Oct. 8, at the Essex County Public Health Department in Elizabethtown 3-7 p.m. Getting an annual seasonal flu vaccine is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as the first step in fighting the flu. The seasonal flu vaccine is de-

veloped annually based on research that suggests which three viruses will be the most common in the current year. Seasonal flu vaccination is recommended for anyone who wants to reduce the likelihood of becoming ill with influenza or spreading influenza to others. Seasonal flu vaccination is especially important for those at higher risk of serious flu complications such as young children, pregnant women, people with chronic health conditions and people 65 years and older. Seasonal flu vaccination is also important healthcare workers and people who live or care for anyone at higher risk of complications to prevent them from becoming ill with the flu. The seasonal flu vaccine will not provide protection against the 2009 H1N1 flu. There will be a separate vaccine for the 2009 H1N1 flu. Essex County Public Health Department urges people to take everyday steps to stay healthy and avoid the flu: For more information visit Essex County Public Health Department at www.co.essex.ny.us/PublicHealth and click on the Flu Central button or call 873-3500.

A simple act of kindness in Crown Point A

s the story goes, a young girl named Hattie stood sobbing outside the doors of a Philadelphia church school more than a century ago, having been turned away due to a lack of space. Upon noticing the child, the church’s pastor approached and asked what the problem was. “They cannot let me into Sunday School,” Hattie said. “There is no room.” “I will take you in,” the kind pastor said and ushered her into the school, telling her that someday the church will be large enough “for all that should come.” Unfortunately, just a few short weeks later, the young girl contracted diphtheria and died. At the funeral, Hattie’s father approached the pastor and told him his daughter had begun saving for a building-fund, running errands for pennies she saved in a little bank. “She would want you to have this,” he said, and with an outstretched hand gave 57 cents to the pastor. The pastor later approached his deacons with the 57 cents. While the group had no short term plan of a new building, the story inspired them and the 57 cents became the first gift toward a fundraising campaign for a new, larger church. When a suitable building parcel was identified, the pastor approached the owner with the little girl’s story.

“I talked the matter over with the owner of the property, and told him of the beginning of the fund, and the story of the little girl,” the pastor said. While the man was not of the church, or even a church goer for that matter, he was so deeply moved by the story that he agreed to take the 57 cents donated by the little girl as the first down payment. A benefactor later paid off the entire amount, leaving the church with no mortgage. Thus was the humble beginnings of the 3,300 seat Temple Baptist Church on Broad Street in Philadelphia. A true story, told by the kind pastor, Russell H. Conwell, in his book “Aces of Diamonds” published in 1890. To this day, Hattie Mae Wiatt’s picture can be found alongside one of Pastor Conwell, on the wall of the children’s Sunday school room in the church, a room large enough “for all that should come.” I was reminded of this story of a simple act of kindness after reading a letter to the editor submitted by Rebecca Ives of Crown Point. Rebecca told a story of a woman who approached her van at the post office and pressed a $50 bill in her hand, saying only “Here is a little something for you to take your kids somewhere nice and cool today. I think God wanted me to bless you today.”

I couldn’t agree more Rebecca, and I share the above story about Hattie Mae Wiatt to show just how one seemingly insignificant act of kindness can take on a life of its own — even when another is taken from us. Woman’s Club has Ti history By Denise Huestis The Woman’s Monday Club held its first meeting in England and still exists there today. The importance of studying this type of organization includes its long life. Few women’s organizations can claim more than a century’s worth of action with detailed records to account for their activities. This club’s metamorphosis from a small reading group to a powerful political voice is one example of the changes society and women have gone through over the past 100 years. The Monday Club was organized in Ticonderoga just prior to 1908. They held monthly meetings, a memorable art ex-

hibit, and an annual guest night and banquet. They raised monies with their bridge parties and other events, and in 1914 presented our hospital with a wheel and carry stretcher. During the 1930s they made donations to the Black Watch Library in the amount of $35, helped with $10 to purchase band uniforms for the high school band and offered $100 for the proposed band stand planned for the east lawn of the community building, This was never built. During the war years, Mrs. Harry Winterbottom was chairwoman, and funds were raised for charitable war projects and also the polio fund. The 50th anniversary of the founding of the Monday Club was celebrated in 1946 with two charter members still present: Mrs. Sheridan Burleigh and Mrs. Harry Winterbottom. Very little is known about this group after WWII. This series of articles is compliments of Ticonderoga Heritage Museum, located in the 1888 building at the entrance of Bicentennial Park.

Correction The article “Sentinels open season” in the Sept. 19 Times of Ti omitted Josh Cook from a list of Ticonderoga High School runners at the Section VII Invitational. Cook finished in 38th place in 18 minutes, 24 seconds.

Couponing's Best-Kept Secrets

STAIRS GOT YOU DOWN? YOU NEED A STAIRLIFT!

Maximize the Match: BOGO Plus Two L ast week I introduced you to some of the fun ways shoppers can make “Buy one, get one free” (BOGO) sales even more rewarding. Anytime we can buy one item and get another free, we're essentially buying two at half price each. So how do we make a half-off sale even better? With coupons, of course! Here’s the third “best-kept secret” of couponing: Secret #3: Use Two Coupons During a BOGO Sale At most stores, you can use one coupon per purchase. Even though you're buying one item and getting another “free,” it’s not truly free. You still have to go through the act of “purchasing” it at the register (the store won’t allow you to just pick up the “free” jar and take it home, will they?) If you live in an area that collects sales tax on groceries, you must still

pay sales tax on the “free” item. So, it’s best to think of BOGO sales as buying two for the price of one. As long as you're buying two items, even if one is full-price and one is free, you can use a coupon on each item you're buying. You’re buying two items, so you can use two coupons. Here’s an example illustrating why this is a great

idea. My grocery store has organic pasta sauces on sale for $3, “Buy one, get one free.” And even though the register rings them up as $3 for the first jar and $0 for the second, it is still possible for me to present a coupon on each jar for additional savings. For this sale, I have two $1 coupons for the pasta sauce. Using one coupon for each jar I purchase brings my cost down to just $1 for two jars, or 50 cents each! That’s a great price for any pasta sauce, especially organic. Now, many grocery stores handle BOGO sales differently. With a sale like the one I outlined above, most stores’ registers will ring the sale as one $3 jar and one $0 jar. Other grocery stores may approach the same BOGO sale by ringing up each item at

$1.50 each. Either way, you can still use a coupon on each item and get each jar of pasta sauce for 50 cents. Are you ready for a bonus tip? If your store “splits” BOGO prices into half for each item, you only have to buy one of the items to get it for that price! So, if you only had one pasta sauce coupon, you could buy just one jar, get it for the $1.50 price, use a $1 coupon on it, and still take it home for 50 cents. To determine which way your store handles BOGO sales, look at your receipt the next time you buy items promoted in a BOGO sale. If the register rings one at full price and one at zero,

War College slated at fort

TICONDEROGA — Fort Ticonderoga will host a consortium of authors, historians and researchers sharing their expertise at the sixth annual Seminar on the American Revolution on Sept. 26 and 27. The topic is integral to the fort’s own history as “America’s First Victory” took place on the site when Ethan Allen’s raid captured it in May of 1775. Patronage to this event has allowed Fort Ticonderoga to provide scholarships to secondary and middle school teachers so they may attend. Four teachers will take advantage of the scholarships for this seminar and to date, 17 teachers have been able to join the lively weekend. Presentations and discussions are joined by a book signing on Saturday afternoon from 1:00 to 1:30 with seven authors signing their works. The public is invited to attend in the Log House and meet authors George C. Newman, James Kirby Martin, Joseph R. Fischer, John Fea, Douglas Egerton, Russell Bourne and illustrator Eric Schnitzer. Fort Ticonderoga offers this Revolutionary War Seminar in the Mars Center inside the Fort walls. Topics as diverse as the French help in America’s independence; the relationship with the Six Nations Indians; and the history to be gleaned from careful study of artwork are on the presentation docket. On Friday evening actor Howard Burnham will become Gen. Horatio Gates in a presentation he titles “Northern Laurels and Southern Willows” in which he defends his actions of 1780. The seminar follows close on the heals of the Revolutionary War Encampment in which 600 re-enactors portrayed the factions involved in the struggle.

you must buy two to receive the price. If it rings each one at half of full price, you will be able to buy just one of the items involved in the sale and receive it for half the price without buying the second item. © CTW Features Jill Cataldo, a coupon-workshop instructor, writer and mother of three, never passes up a good deal. a scantron answer sheet and an envelope containing the test. We had 10 minutes to finish a 30-question multiple choice test where the questions ranged from ‘Which House is Harry Potter sorted into?’ to ‘A cygnet is what type of baby bird?’ “After the tests were collected, we only waited about five minutes for them to be graded,” she said. “My number was one of nine to be called indicating that I had passed the test. “The interview with the production assistant was very brief, lasting about two minutes at most,” Addante said. “I was one of three to get passed onto one of the executive producers. After another short, but this time video taped, interview, I was released onto the streets of New York City. The whole audition took about 30 minutes.” Aug. 13 she was notified she would be a contestant on the show, which would be taped Sept. 18. Addante is a graduate of The College of Saint Rose in Albany with a bachelor ’s degree in social studies education. She is now working on her master ’s degree in adolescent literacy at Sage Graduate School in Troy. She is employed by Russell Sage College as a resident director, responsible for the eight residence halls on the RSC campus. She also works with the student resident assistant staff to create social and educational programming for the campus. Besides working, Addante has spent the past month preparing for her chance to win $1 million. “I’ve been doing a ton of reading,” she said. “I bought the New York Times Fact Book, and have been making flashcards of information that I think might be important. I’m also ramping up my TV quiz show intake by catching reruns of Jeopardy and Millionaire on the Game Show Network.” And she’s established her “lifelines” — three people she can call for help if she’s stumped on the show. Two are friends and one is a professor from Saint Rose. “I won't know the air date until after I tape, but it should be sometime in October or November,” Addante said. “It is the syndicated version of the show with Meredith Vieira, so it will be airing during the daytime, not primetime.”

Ti From page 1 and area businesses to find out what they want from the program and the director,” Brassard said. “I will then formulate a work plan using the knowledge I gain. “I want to visit every area business and get to know them,” she added. “It is my past experience that site visits are a valuable tool. I also plan to work with area groups and chambers to coordinate and promote our events. The key these days is to utilize a regional approach and to challenge Essex County residents to ‘re-discover your own back yard.’ I have other thoughts and ideas that I hope to turn into long term goals as well.” Brassard went to the Essex County Empire Zone Program as a part-time secretary in 1993, working her way up to become program director. She was responsible for administration of the program, certifying qualifying businesses, revising the zone boundaries and reporting directly to state officials and other boards. Brassard believes she has developed the skills to succeed with the Ti chamber. “I find the chamber job attractive because what I have done for the past 16 years segues perfectly into this position,” she said. “Ticonderoga has had Empire Zone designation since the late 1990s so I am familiar with the area. I am not coming to the job cold. I have attended meetings and worked with numerous Ticonderoga groups. “I served on various marketing committees, including Lake Champlain Region Marketing Committee and Champlain Valley Heritage Network, with the past director and I will continue to do so,” Brassard added. “I also feel my experience with business assistance will be a valuable tool.” The new chamber director also has a commitment to the area. “I was born and raised in Moriah and haven’t strayed very far; I live next door to the family farm,” Brassard said. “My son Thomas works at International Paper Co. and I have two grandsons, TJ and Derek, who at the moment are both highly absorbed in playing football at Moriah Central School. I am an RSVP volunteer, I work on various town improvement projects and my main hobby is NASCAR racing, of which I am a huge fan.”

SATURDAY September 26, 2009

Asbestos discovery closes Schroon school Classes canceled as a precaution By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com SCHROON LAKE — Schroon Lake Central School closed Wednesday after asbestos was unexpectedly found during a building project. The asbestos was found Monday by workers, who immediately sealed off the area. School officials decided to close school Wednesday to allow for the removal of the cancer-causing sub-

stance and subsequent air quality testing. “It allows us to have the asbestos removed Tuesday after we close the building and to have all air samples back before re-opening Thursday,” Superintendent Mike Bonnewell said Monday. “It’s not anticipated to take more than a day.” The school is in the midst of a $14.7 million renovation and expansion project. Bonnewell said most of the work to date has been outside the actual school building, but when workers tore down an interior wall they discovered asbestos. “This is a matter of being triple

safe,” Bonnewell said. “We obviously would never expose our students or staff to any hazardous material. If for some reason we’re not ready on Thursday, school will be closed again although we don’t anticipate any further problems.” The unexpected day off will count as one of the district’s allotted five snow/emergency days. Asbestos is commonly found in buildings constructed before the 1970s. The Schroon Lake school was erected in 1935-36. The current construction project, technically two projects — a $13.4 million upgrade of the existing school building and a separate $1.3 million conversion of the current

combination gym/auditorium into an auditorium. The work is scheduled to be completed by fall 2010. Voters approved both measures June 28, 2006. The first proposition totals $13,398,159. It calls for repairs to the school’s exterior, replacement of singlepane windows and doors installed in the 1960s, installation of a statemandated storm water basin, installation of mandated fire doors, installation of safety systems, asbestos and lead containment, installation of a state-mandated elevator for handicap accessibility, electrical upgrades, an energy efficiency system, replacement of boil-

ers and internet accessibility. The proposition also calls for construction of five new classrooms for pre-kindergarten, elementary science, special education, speech and occupational and physical therapy as well as a gymnasium and locker rooms. Current classrooms will be refurbished. The second proposition totals $1,329,742. It calls for the current combination gym/auditorium to be converted into an auditorium with additional permanent seating, improved lighting, improved sound system and new stage rigging and curtains.

Schroon Lake parishioners become pastoral ministers dan@denpubs.com OGDENSBURG — “No pay, but the benefits are out of this world.” Those were the words of the Rev. Terry LaValley, presider and Diocesan administrator at the beginning of his homily, as the Catholic Diocese of Ogdensburg commissioned 65 parishioners as pastoral ministers in a Eucharistic Celebration Mass held at St. Mary’s Cathedral Sept. 12. Formation for Ministry courses were held the last two years at two regional sites: St. Phillip Neri Church in Westport and Church of the Visitation in Norfolk. Candidates attended courses in eight-week segments, once per week. The required courses included the Old Testament, New Testament, Church, Spirituality, Christology, the Sacraments, Moral Theology and Social Justice. “There is an academic component and pastoral training through workshops for mentoring and spiritual formation,” said Heidi Macko, who directs the program. “Our goal is to bring them into a deeper relationship with Christ and then to go out

and minister to others. They’ll serve in a wide variety of capacities within their parishes.” The newly-commissioned ministers will assist their pastors in all phases of parish life. A minimum commitment of two years service is required, although most are already considered very active in their parishes and many will look to continue their formation training even further. With the average age of a priest in the Diocese now 60 years old, the church is faced with a dwindling number to serve 105 parishes and more than 100,000 Catholics in the North Country. The 14-year-old formation program has seen more than 800 individuals go through the course to provide assistance to their parish families. A pilot program is being launched this fall to offer the formation classes at a satellite location in Tupper Lake, where classes will be seen interactively as broadcasted from Holy Angels Church Hall in Altona. The formation course is also being offered at the Immaculate Conception Church in Brownville. Interested parties should call the Diocese office at 1-315-393-2920 for more information.

Participants in the Ogdensburg Diocese’s Faith Formation program at St. Philip Neri Church in Westport were commissioned as pastoral ministers at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Ogdensburg Sept. 12. They include: Daniel Alexander, Sarah Bosley and Paul White from St. Elizabeth’s Church in Elizabethtown; Rob Bashaw, Irene Haines and John Lucero Jr. from the Roman Catholic Community of Keeseville; Stephen Joseph, Leo Cahill and Brian Mulcahy from St. Augustine’s Church in Peru; Jacqueline Robertin from John XIII College Community Parish in Plattsburgh; Josephine Garrant and Brian Neureuther from Our Lady of Victory church in Plattsburgh; Leslie Marvel from St. Mary’s of the Lake Church in Plattsburgh; Starr Burke from St. Peter’s Church in Plattsburgh; Robert Brooks from St. Patrick’s Church in Plattsburgh; Joseph A. Provoncha and David Tart from Our Lady of the Lourdes Church in Schroon Lake; and Penny Martin and Susan J. Fahey from St. Philip of Jesus and St. Joseph’s Church in Willsboro and Essex. tax levy of $1,846,629. The town board made several cuts in the 2009 budget. A part-time police officer position was eliminated, saving $12,500. The town attorney position was eliminated in 2009. There were also cuts in street lighting, sidewalk and bridge funds. Each cut was $5,000. The town board also decided to eliminate bussing for the summer youth recreation program. school. We felt it was important for all students to be involved in this unique community event.” The celebration, which continued Sept. 19 with the re-dedication of the renovated Champlain Memorial lighthouse, marked the 400th anniversary of Samuel de Champlain’s discovery of the lake that bears his name. At the same time the annual Festival of Nations was taking place at the site. The Festival of Nations celebrated the cultural heritage of the nations which, during the 1700s, left a lasting imprint on the Lake Champlain Valley: Canada, France, Great Britain, Native American Indian tribes, and the United States. It featured music, crafts, food, dance, games, family activities, clothing, folk life and customs. Crown Point students took part in a variety of grade-level appropriate activities during their visit. To prepare for the adventure students read about de Champlain. Students were able to see the Lois McClure, a replica schooner docked at Crown Point Reservation Campground’s renovated steamboat dock. They also met “Samuel Champlain,” portrayed by Don Thompson, and heard vocalist and instrumentalist Linda Russell perform music familiar to Lake Champlain inhabitants during the 1700s. Highlighting the Sept. 18 activities was the re-dedication of the Champlain Memorial lighthouse. Taking part in the re-dedication were Vermont Gov. Jim Douglas, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Alexander “Pete” Grannis and French Ambassador Pierre Vimont. A bust by French sculptor Auguste Rodin adorns the front of the lighthouse, and was a gift to the people of the Champlain Valley from France when the lighthouse

Hank is a past member of the Moose Lodge and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Hank enjoyed golf; deer/elk hunting with friend Joe Tangi, sons and grandsons; fishing; and traveling by RV. He spent his time relaxing at Jackson Lake. Hank enjoyed fixing anything for anyone that needed it. Many friends and neighbors adopted Hank and Lois as their Mom and Dad or Gram and Pap, due to his caring and devoted nature. He is survived by his wife, Lois; children; grandchildren; great-grandchild; sisters, Flora (Art) Nadeau, Marion (Ken) Jones, Sally (Dick) Roehr and Ella (Clarence) Potter; two brothers; Albert (Jackie) and Rick Pelerin; and many nieces and nephews. Hank died with his family by his side from pulmonary fibrosis. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Nye, Stewart and Frank Sturtevant, Joe and Elmer Pelerin; and a sister, Jennie Pelerin. Memorial contributions can be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation via www.active.com/donate/pulmonaryfibrosis/rwatkins. Arrangements entrusted to Stoddard Funeral Home. Ti downs Vermont club; Moriah nipped in overtime Ticonderoga posted a 20-7 non-league win against Woodstock, Vt., in football play Sept. 18. The Sentinels were in total control, running for 282 yards and throwing for another 66. Bryant Austin got Ti on the scoreboard, crashing into the end zone from a yard away late in the opening stanza. The TD came after Ticonderoga had squandered several earlier scoring opportunities. Woodstock showed life in the second period, taking a 7-6 lead, but Bryant answered with a 35-yard TD run. Luke Bartlett added the two-point conversion on a pass from Robert Kearns and Ti led at the intermission, 147. The Sentinels totally controlled the third period, but were held scoreless by 55 yards in penalties. Ti closed out the scoring in the final period when Kearns ran for a 9-yard TD. Bryant finished the game with a 153 yards rushing and two scores. Kearns ran for 70 yards and passed for another 66, hitting 5 of 10 throws. Peru 19, Moriah 18 OT

Football Conference play Sept. 18. It was second straight overtime loss for the toughluck Vikings. Moriah used a powerful running game to grab a 120 first ha;f lead. Ron Schofield crashed into the end zone from 12 yards out and again from 4 yards away, but both extra point attempts failed. Peru made defensive adjustments at half to shut down the Moriah attack and set the stage for a comeback. Dave Raggone capped a drive with a yard TD plunge to make it a 12-6 game in the third quarter. Peru then knotted the game on a yard TD pass from Rob Duquette to Connor Keleher with less than four minutes to play in the final period. In the overtime Moriah struck first as Schofield ran to pat dirt from 7 yards out. Again the PAT failed. Peru answered with a 10-yard TD run from Duquette and this time Ben Whitney, who had missed two earlier attempts, booted the PAT for the victory. Schofield had a big game for Moriah, running for 108 yards and three touchdowns. Nick Gilbo added 52 yards on the ground for the Vikings.

Women now a strong presence in the outdoors

E

arlier this month, I visited The Whitetail Summit 2009 hosted at the Sports Dome in Queensbury. Although attendance levels were lower than expected, the event offered numerous high quality exhibits and a wide range of interesting seminars. It was a good start toward building a quality show that will hopefully grow into an annual event. I stuck around to attend The Whitetail Summit dinner sponsored by Trijicon and watch as Vermont deer hunting legend, Larry Benoit, was inducted into the newly created, Whitetail Hall of Fame, as its first member. Benoit’s sons, Lanny and Shane, accepted the award on their father's behalf. Among the camo clad crew, one enthusiast stood out. Karen Turner, aka the Vermont Huntress was notable for one simple reason. She was a female and she represents the fastest growing constituency among an ever diminishing breed of outdoor enthusiasts, hunters. Whitetail deer are a hunter ’s equivalent of bass. And like bass, whitetail deer are widely distributed across most of the country. Relatively easily accessible, whitetails are the most commonly hunted big game animal in North America. They are a blue collar animal, the prey of Joe Sixpack. Despite the fact that whitetail deer are pursued predominantly by rural, white males, women constitute the fastest growing segment of the hunting fraternity today. Over the past decade, an interesting and important trend has quietly taken place across the wild lands of North America. Women are taking to the woods in ever increasing numbers. They possess more effective outdoor skills and a greater level of confidence than ever before. Hunting, fishing adventures are no longer the exclusive domain of the male of the species. Nor, in reality, were they ever! Women were the original campers, from the earliest

days, in almost all corners of the earth. Aboriginal people relied on women to prepare shelters, to make clothes, gather the water, cook the meals and tend to the necessities essential to insure survival of their people. Women made the decisions of when to move and where to camp. Meanwhile, the men hunted and went to war. It’s not surprising that many Native American nations were matriarchal societies. As ‘civilized’ society grew and matured, it evolved to the point where a women’s place was considered to be the home, while the men were expected to roam. The wilderness was considered a hostile environment to be tamed. It was not a place fit for a lady. Although numerous examples remain of pioneer women taking to the woods, the American society came to accept the fact that woodland travel and wilderness adventures were primarily a male dominated environment. The massive Brandreth Park, with over 30,000 acres stretching from Raquette Lake to Long Lake, is considered the largest, single family owned parcel in the Adirondacks. From the turn of the century and well into the 1900’s, a local hunter by the name of Paul Brandreth hunted these lands. Paul was an internationally recognized expert on hunting whitetail deer and wrote of his adventures in Forest and Stream, Woods and Waters and other national publications. He even published a book on hunting whitetails. It is still considered one of the finest ever written on the subject. However, despite being one of the foremost authorities on the topic, Paul never attended the fabled New York Sportsman Show. He never set foot in the Explorers Club nor shared a cigar with Teddy Roosevelt while recounting tales of the hunt. The reason Paul Brandreth never shared in any of the common delights for a man of the hunt, was because he was a she. Pauline Brandreth wrote under the pen name Paul. It was the only way she could be published, for at the time, no one would believe that a woman knew anything about hunting whitetail deer. Luckily, for both genders, this attitude is rapidly slipping into oblivion. Today, there are female forest rangers, EnCon officers and fire jumpers. Women now rate highly as hunting and fishing guides, two pursuits considered

the bastions of traditional guided adventures. Women are also leading trips for whitewater rafting, ski touring, backpacking, rock climbing and ice climbing. They form the core of wilderness education programs and represent nearly 72 percent of the membership of the National Association of Interpreters, a professional organization of certified naturalists. Women now constitute the majority of instructors teaching the next generation about the out of doors. Women have more opportunities today to develop the skills and knowledge necessary for wilderness adventures. At the same time they are acquiring these tools, they are also empowering themselves to better utilize this training, often while teaching others. Additionally, as women began to take advantage of the opportunities to enjoy wilderness adventures, the outdoor industry took notice. In 1984, Kelty, Inc., a premier manufacturer of backpacks, introduced the Kelty Woman, a backpack specifically designed for the female frame. Kelty was one of the first in the outdoor industry to recognize the potential for manufacturing and marketing products specifically for women. Previously, women had to use smaller sized men’s equipment or products made for children. However, this equipment didn’t fit, feel or look right. How quickly the tide turned. Today, equipment technology features lighter, stronger materials that are easier to use and carry. These products are more accessible than ever since they are often designed, manufactured and marketed by women for women. Companies such as Browning, Marlin and Rugar now produce firearms specifically designed and sized for women. So does Orvis, LL Bean and a host of outdoor equipment and apparel manufacturers. Furthermore, the advent of gender specific gear has made skill sets and technique more important than brute strength. Materials such as kevlar have dramatically reduced product weight, while graphite has improved performance. Today, there are more women paddling remote regions and casting a flyrod than ever before. Removing the ‘macho’ element from the outdoor experience has opened new horizons of adventure travel to a segment of the population that is appreciative, considerate of the environment and in many cases, ‘just fun to be with.’ Gentlemen be advised! The next time you encounter someone you thought was just a “Babe in the Woods,” keep an eye on her. You may learn a thing or two! Joe Hackett is a guide and sportsman residing in Ray Brook.
